CHRISTINE'S ACCOUNT KEPT CHANGING WINDS I FINALLY MET WITH THE PRINCIPAL, VIDEO -- EVENTS. DESPITE BEING BULLIED AND CORNERED, AMETHYST WAS PUNISHED AND NATALIE FACED NO CONSEQUENCES. AND ON OCTOBER 16TH AMETHYST WAS PULLED OUT OF CLASS AND GIVEN ADDITIONAL SUSPENSION FOR SUPPOSEDLY ONLINE BULLYING, A DECISION THAT SEEMED BASED ON FAVORITISM AND NOT FAX. THE ONGOING MISTREATMENT HAS DEVASTATED MY DAUGHTER'S MENTAL HEALTH. THAT DAY FEELING UTTERLY DEFEATED, SHE ATTEMPTED TO END HER LIFE.
SHE SENT HER FRIENDS GOODBYE MESSAGES AND FELT LIKE NO ONE CARED AND NO ONE LISTENED. SHE HAS BEEN IN AND OUT OF PARTIAL HOSPITALIZATION PROGRAMS SINCE THEN AND THE SCHOOL IS FULLY AWARE OF HER STRUGGLES. THEY CHOSE PUNITIVE MEASURES WITHOUT EVEN NOTIFYING ME AS HER PARENT. AND I HAD TO FAST-FORWARD TO 2016-17 SCHOOL YEAR WHEN I HAD THE PLEASURE OF WELCOMING HER AS A FOURTH-GRADE STUDENT ALONGSIDE HER FIRST GRADE SISTER, AND VIVIDLY REMEMBER THEIR FAMILY. IT WAS A JOY TO FINALLY WELCOME THEM TO THE COMMUNITY. HER JOURNEY HAS NOT BEEN WITHOUT CHALLENGES BUT THROUGH THE ALTERNATIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT SHE BLOSSOMED INTO AN OUTSTANDING SCHOLAR WITH POTENTIAL TO MAKE EXTRAORDINARY CONTRIBUTIONS TO SOCIETY. FAST FORWARD AGAIN TO 2024-25 SCHOOL YEAR AND I RETURNED AND IT WAS AT THIS TIME I ONCE AGAIN MET ANGELINA, NOW A YOUNG WOMAN WHO TRULY HAD BECOME HER OWN. HER LEADERSHIP AND DETERMINATION, PERSONAL GROWTH WERE NOTHING SHORT OF INSPIRING. HER ACCOMPLISHMENTS REFLECT HER RELENTLESS DRIVE OF SUCCESS AND SHE HAS TAKEN COLLEGE COURSES, NOT FOR HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT BUT SOLELY TO ADVANCE HER COLLEGE ASPIRATIONS. SHE ALSO IS ACTIVELY PURSUING AFTERSCHOOL CLASSES AND HAS COMPETED IN SKILLS USA TO BROADEN HER EXPERIENCES. HER ACADEMIC AND EXTRACURRICULAR ACHIEVEMENTS ARE ONLY PART OF THE STORY.
ANGELI HAS TRANSFORMED OUR SCHOOL AND RECRUITED STUDENTS TO THE SUPERINTENDENT STUDENT ADVISORY BOARD MULTIPLE TIMES.
SHE HAS SECURED STUDENT REPRESENTATION ON THE SCHOOL SITE COUNCIL FOR THE FIRST TIME. AND SHE SPEARHEADED THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE FIRST ASP. HER ATTRIBUTIONS TO EXTEND BEYOND LEADERSHIP BECAUSE SHE PLAYED A PIVOTAL ROLE IN THE SCHOOL LIBRARY AND FURTHER HER COMMITMENT TO OTHERS. AFTER THAT THE VISITORS PARTICIPATED IN AN ADDITIONAL STUDENT CREATED CARNIVAL GAMES TO EARN CANDY AND PRIZES. EVERYONE ENJOYED THE EVENING. THIS YEAR SOMERSET IS OFFERING AFTERSCHOOL CLASSES FOR THE FIRST TIME. ONE OF OUR NEW CLASSES IS ART CLASS THAT STUDENTS WILL LEARN ABOUT FAMOUS ARTISTS AND MIMIC THEIR STYLES. ANOTHER IS PERSONAL FITNESS. IN THIS CLASS STUDENTS HAVE INDIVIDUAL FITNESS PLANS AND GET TO ENJOY LISTENING TO MUSIC AND HAVE FUN WHILE GETTING INTO SHAPE. IN THE MONTH OF OCTOBER WE HAD A SPECIAL GUEST FROM THE MARINES THAT SPOKE ABOUT ALL THE DIFFERENT OPPORTUNITIES THAT ONE HAS IN THE PROFESSION. WE ALSO HAD COMMUNITY COLLEGE REPRESENTATIVES ON CAMPUS TO TALK WITH STUDENTS ABOUT THE PROGRAMS THEY OFFER. WE ARE HAPPY TO HAVE THEM AS COMMUNITY PARTNERS. WE ALSO HAD FIELD TRIPS TO SCREEN VEST IN L.A.
AND CRYSTAL COVE IN NEWPORT BEACH. AT SCREEN VEST STUDENTS LEARNED HOW TO USE MAKEUP AND SPECIAL EFFECTS IN THE HAUNTED HOUSE MAZE. WE ALSO HAD THE TRIP TO CRYSTAL COVE WITH EDUCATION IN PLANTS AND ANIMALS NATIVE TO CALIFORNIA. AFTER SEEING THE WILDERNESS AREA WE VISITED THE TIDE POOLS AND SAUCY ANIMALS AND PLANT LIFE THERE. FINALLY, THE UP AND COMING EVENTS FOR SOMERSET. WE JUST STARTED BLOCK FOR AN ANNUAL TURKEY DAY IS NEXT WEEK, MARK IT ON YOUR CALENDAR. MORE RECENTLY WE PASSED A RESOLUTION PROVIDING ACADEMIC FOCUS THROUGH A CELL PHONE FREE ENVIRONMENT IN JULY. THE RESOLUTION CALLED SPECIFICALLY FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF A DISTRICTWIDE POLICY THAT LIMITED STUDENT USE OF CELL PHONES AND PERSONAL DEVICES DURING THE SCHOOL DAY TO SUPPORT ACADEMIC FOCUS AND WELL-BEING. THE BOARD'S RESOLUTION CAME IN ADVANCE OF ANOTHER ASSEMBLY BILL THAT WAS RECENTLY SIGNED INTO LAW IN SEPTEMBER BY GOVERNOR NEWSOM, THAT REQUIRES SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO DEVELOP AND ADOPT POLICIES THAT LIMIT OR PROHIBIT CELL PHONE USAGE ON CAMPUS. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 2019 AND THE BILL IN 2024 IS THAT IT CHANGES IT FROM DISTRICTS MAY TO DISTRICTS SHALL. I WANT TO EMPHASIZE THROUGH THE LEADERSHIP THAT THE BOARD WAS AHEAD OF THINGS WITH PASSING ITS RESOLUTION AND BRINGING US TO THIS POINT. IT IS GOOD TO BE ON THE CUTTING EDGE AND MOVING FORWARD. WE HAD QUITE A NUMBER OF RESPONSES IN A PRETTY DIVERSE GROUP. OF THE STUDENTS, ABOUT 85% WERE SECONDARY STUDENTS. OF THE TEACHERS WE HAD A FAIRLY GOOD BALANCE OF SECONDARY AND ELEMENTARY. 55% BEING SECONDARY AND 41% ELEMENTARY. OF PARENTS AND FAMILY MEMBERS WHO RESPONDED, WE HAD 65% OF THOSE PARENTS RESPONDING WITH AT LEAST ONE STUDENT IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS AND OVER 20% OF OUR PARENT FAMILY RESPONDENTS HAD MULTIPLE STUDENTS IN MULTIPLE SCHOOLS.
SO, LET'S START WITH PARENTS. WHAT DID OUR PARENTS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THEIR STUDENT CELL PHONE USE IN SCHOOL ? ONE OF THE FIRST QUESTIONS WE ASKED IS HOW OFTEN DO YOU BELIEVE YOUR CHILD USES THEIR PHONE DURING SCHOOL HOURS? 27% OF PARENT AND FAMILY MEMBER RESPONDENTS THAT ALWAYS OR OFTEN. 30% SAID SOMETIMES. 44% SAID RARELY OR NEVER. THEY WERE LIKE 52, 53%. AND WE SAW THAT THE STATE MATCHING BOND PASSED, AS WELL.
