SHE STATED THAT THEY WERE ALL WORKING HARD TO ACHIEVE THEIR ATTENDANCE GOALS, AND THAT THE PERCENTAGES WERE SO CLOSE THAT A PAJAMA DAY WOULD ACTUALLY MAKE STUDENTS ATTEND SCHOOL THAT DAY. NEEDLESS TO SAY, MIMI'S REQUEST WAS GRANTED. HOW COULD I NOT? WHAT TRULY MAKES MIMI STAND OUT IS HER ABILITY TO CONNECT AND UPLIFT THOSE AROUND HER.

SO I'M GOING TO START OFF WITH LAST YEAR.

SO WE ENDED OFF OUR SCHOOL YEAR WITH OUR HOLIDAY EVENTS WITH OUR CHRISTMAS PARADE AND SNACK TIME RALLY WHERE STUDENTS COME OUT AND ENJOY THEIR LAST DAY OF THE FIRST SEMESTER.

AND THESE ARE THE ALL-STAR BAND.

ROSE PARADE THIS YEAR ALONG WITH SEVEN OTHER HIGH SCHOOLS, AND IT WAS REALLY GREAT TO SEE THEM ALL ON TV AND SEEING ALL THESE BANDS ARE HAPPY TO PERFORM. AND THEY TRIED THEIR BEST AND NOW TO OUR KEITH HAWKINS SEMINAR. YESTERDAY WE HAD OUR KEITH HAWKINS SEMINAR, WHICH IS THE LAST SEMINAR, MAJOR EVENT THAT SENIORS DO JUST TO BOND TRULY AND GET TO HAVE A DEEPER UNDERSTANDING WITH EACH OTHER.

AND KEITH HAWKINS IS A SPEAKER WHICH HE HELPS THEM RECONNECT IN WAYS AND HELPS THEM TO SAY SORRY MAYBE TO OTHER PEOPLE THEY'VE DONE WRONG OVER THE YEARS, AND THEY'RE ABLE TO TAKE THEIR BIG 25 PICTURE SEEN ON THE BOTTOM RIGHT.

FOR BOOK CLASS, THIS WILL BE AN APPROXIMATELY TWO WEEKS.

IT'S WHERE -- WHERE ALL THE ELEMENTARIES THAT ATTENDED BELLFLOWER WILL COME AND SEE WHAT BELLFLOWER IS ABOUT, WILL SHOW OFF CLUBS SUCH AS MIDDLE SCHOOL BAND AND COLOR GUARD AS SEEN ON THE BOTTOM. AND THEN NAVIGATION, THAT WILL BE UPCOMING ON JANUARY 30TH WHERE PARENTS AND STUDENTS CAN COME TALK ABOUT CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS ON CAMPUS, AND TO HELP STUDENTS START TO DETERMINE WHERE THEY WANT TO BE NEXT YEAR IN SCHOOLS SUCH AS CLASSES AND DIFFERENT PROGRAMS. THANK YOU FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHARE THE LATEST ACTIVITIES AT SOMERSET WITH YOU TONIGHT. THE ASB HOLIDAY SPIRIT WEEK WAS A LOT OF FUN. WE HAD DRESS- UP DAY, PLANNED MUSICAL CHAIRS, AND HAD A GREAT GAME OF KICK BALL BETWEEN THE STUDENTS AND STAFF.

THE STAFF TEAM WON, UNFORTUNATELY, AND THE STUDENTS ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO A REMATCH. SOMERSET IS A PLACE OF FOUR STUDENTS TO EARN CREDITS EITHER TO GRADUATE OR RETURN TO THEIR HOME SCHOOLS FOR GRADUATION.

SO FAR THIS SCHOOL YEAR, 16 STUDENTS HAVE ALREADY GRADUATED. FOUR STUDENTS HAVE AGAIN ON TRACK TO RETURN TO BELLFLOWER HIGH SCHOOL, AND NINE HAVE RETURNED TO MAYFAIR HIGH SCHOOL.

WE WISH ALL OF THESE STUDENTS WELL AND ARE PROUD OF ALL THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS.

ALL OF THEIR ACCOMPLISHMENTS. THE SKILLS USA COMPETITION IS STARTING. THREE SOMERSET AND FIVE STUDENTS ARE PREPARING TO COMPETE IN THE COMPETITION UNDER THE DIRECTION OF MR. GUZMAN.

THESE STUDENTS ARE PARTICIPATING IN VARIOUS ASPECTS OF THE SKILLS USA COMPETITION, INCLUDING TELECOMMUNICATIONS, CABLING, CAD, AND SEARCH AND RESCUE ROBOTICS. I AM GOING TO COMPETE IN ACTION SKILLS BY DEMONSTRATING HOW TO DESIGN A 3D PRINTED OBJECT USING SOLID WORKS, AND WE WILL KEEP YOU UPDATED ON HOW WE DO.

EDWARD SILES CREATED A PROTOTYPE FOR DOOR BLOCKERS TO KEEP OUR CAMPUS SAFE.

THESE WORK BY ALLOWING DOORS TO STAY OPEN WHILE STILL LOCKED SO THEY CAN BE EASILY PULLED SHUT IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY. ONCE HE GETS ALL OF THE ASPECTS OF THE DESIGN PERFECT, THESE WILL BE PRINTED AND INSTALLED ON CLASSROOMS AND OFFICE DOORS.

WOODRUFF PTA HOSTED THE POLAR EXPRESS÷÷EXPRESS FESTIVAL. HAD A FREE GIFT FOR EACH CHILD IN ATTENDANCE. THEY ALSO IN DECEMBER SET UP A REINDEER RUN OBSTACLE COURSE, DONATED WINNER MEDALS AND PRIZES FOR ALL THEIR STUDENTS AND HOSTED A HOLIDAY FOR STUDENTS TO BUY AFFORDABLE GIFTS FOR FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

AND THEN BELOW THERE ARE SOME OF OUR OTHER EVENTS THAT OTHER PTAS, I KNOW THERE IS ERNIE PYLE, BELLFLOWER MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL, THEIR FAMILY ENGAGEMENT EVENT. THERE IS A LOT MORE. SO I WANTED TO UNDERSTAND WHY THE FUNDS HAVEN'T BEEN RELEASED TO THE SCHOOL SITES FOR THE COACHES TO BE HIRED FOR THESE ARTS PROGRAMS. INSTEAD WE'RE HEARING THAT THE DISTRICT IS TRYING TO CONTROL HOW THESE FUNDS ARE BEING USED.

IT IS ALSO OUR UNDERSTANDING THAT THERE HAS NOT BEEN AN OFFICIAL MEETING WITH THE ADMINISTRATION AND DIRECTORS SINCE AUGUST OF 2024, WHICH IS BEFORE THE SCHOOL YEAR BEGAN. I'M HERE SPEAKING IN REGARD TO HOW THIS IMPACTS THE MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL BAND AND COLOR GUARD PROGRAMS SPECIFICALLY. PROP 28 WAS DESIGNED TO HIRE PART-TIME PROFESSIONAL COACHES AS CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEES THAT SPECIALIZE IN SPECIFIC INSTRUMENTATION AND SKILL SETS THAT STUDENTS CAN LEARN FROM. EXAMPLES ARE INSTRUCTORS THAT HAVE EXPERTISE IN MARCHING, COLOR GUARD, CHOREOGRAPHY, ET CETERA. THE INFORMATION WE HAVE HEARD IS THE DISTRICT IS TRYING TO HIRE ONLY CREDENTIALED TEACHERS FOR THESE ROLES.

THE ISSUE THERE IS NOT ANY OF THESE THAT EXIST AS ONE PERSON AND IT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE FOR ONE PERSON TO COVER ALL OF THAT WITH 100 STUDENTS AT A TIME.

WHILE CREDENTIALED TEACHERS ARE WELL VERSED ACROSS INSTRUMENTS AND TOPICS, THEY HAVE LIMITED KNOWLEDGE IN MOST OF THESE AREAS.

OTHER DISTRICTS ARE ALREADY USING THESE FUNDS FROM THEIR DISTRICTS, AND THE PROP 28 FUNDS. IF THESE COACHES ARE NOT EMPLOYED THROUGH THE PROP 28 FUNDS, WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO AFFORD TO KEEP THEM, AND IT WILL EVENTUALLY BE THE DEMISE OF THE PROGRAMS AT A COMPETITIVE LEVEL. IF THOSE PROGRAMS LEAVE THE DISTRICT, THEN SO DO THE STUDENTS AND THE ENROLLMENT NUMBERS TO OUR SCHOOLS, BECAUSE THE PARENTS ARE HONESTLY GOING TO SEND THEM TO DISTRICTS THAT ARE LOCAL THAT ALREADY HAVE THAT FUNDING AND THAT ALREADY HAVE THOSE COMPETITIVE PROGRAMS THAT THEIR KIDS WANT TO PARTICIPATE IN.

KEEP IN MIND THESE SAME COACHES WERE PART OF THE 605 ALL SURVEY WHICH WE ALREADY SAW WAS SHOWCASED EARLIER, AND THAT HAS BROUGHT A REALLY BIG POSITIVE IMPACT TO AND NOTORIETY TO OUR DISTRICT, AND THOSE SPECIFIC COACHES WERE PART OF THAT. THE TIMELY AND EFFECTIVE UTILIZATION OF THESE FUNDS IS CRUCIAL FOR THE SUCCESS OF THESE PROGRAMS. HIRING A QUALIFIED AND DEDICATED STAFF IS PARAMOUNT TO ENSURE THE STUDENTS RECEIVE THE HIGH QUALITY ARTS EDUCATION THEY DESERVE. A DELAY IN STAFFING WILL INEVITABLY HINDER PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND POTENTIALLY JEOPARDIZE THE LONG- TERM VIABILITY OF THESE VALUABLE INITIATIVES. PREVIOUSLY, I WORKED WITH HEMET UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR 18 YEARS, AND I WAS HERE IN THE BELLFLOWER AND SAN GABRIEL AREA FOR ABOUT EIGHT OR NINE OF THOSE YEARS. SO I DID WORK HERE IN BELLFLOWER AS A DRIVER, AS AN INSTRUCTOR, AND IN INTERIM SUPERVISOR.

SO MY INTEREST HERE IS THAT I'M HERE TO SUPPORT THE SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS THAT ARE HERE STILL WORKING FOR YOU THAT WORK WITH HEMET.

SO ORIGINALLY, I WAS HERE WHEN YOU GUYS ORIGINALLY CONTRACTED WITH HEMET. SO I KNOW THERE WAS ABOUT 15 SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS THAT THEY GOT FROM THE AREA THAT THEY

HIRED. AND THEN DURING COVID, THOSE DRIVERS WERE ACTUALLY DISPLACED AND BECAUSE OF SENIORITY THEY HAD TO TAKE ROUTES IN THE HEMET AND PERRIS AREA. SO I REMEMBER THAT TIME, AND I REMEMBER THE DISAPPOINTMENT THAT ALL THE STAFF AND THE STUDENTS AND THE FAMILIES FELT WHEN THEY LOST THOSE DRIVERS BECAUSE THEY HAD TO GO TO OTHER AREAS.

SO I CAN ONLY IMAGINE THAT IS GOING TO -- THAT MAY HAPPEN AGAIN IF, YOU KNOW, YOU'RE NOT ABLE TO WORK FAST ENOUGH TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN TO WHERE YOU BRING TRANSPORTATION INTO YOUR OWN BACK IN-HOUSE. THESE DRIVERS ARE DEDICATED TO YOU. I WAS ALSO HERE AFTER COVID WHEN THEY WERE WORKING AS ESSENTIAL WORKERS AND PAIRED THEMSELVES WITH THE NUTRITION DEPARTMENT DELIVERING MEALS TO ALL THE STUDENTS AND FAMILIES. THEY DIDN'T KNOW THIS AREA BECAUSE THEY WERE WORKING IN THE EL MONTE AREA PREVIOUSLY.

SO THEY LEARNED WHERE ALL THE STUDENTS LIVE. THAT GAVE THEM GOOD TIME TO LEARN THIS AREA. THEY KNOW WHERE ALL THE HOUSES ARE, ALL THE SCHOOL SITES. THEY LEARNED, YOU KNOW, A LOT OF THE STAFF AT THAT TIME.

THEY'VE JUST SHOWED THEIR DEDICATION HERE, AND THEY'RE HERE TODAY TO JUST LET YOU KNOW THEY ARE INTERESTED IN MAINTAINING THEIR BEING HERE AS A FAMILY WITH YOU GUYS, BECAUSE, REALLY, MY EXPERIENCE HERE IN BELLFLOWER WAS AMAZING.

AND THERE ARE MIXED RESULTS, REGARDING GRADUATION RATE AND COLLEGE CAREER STATUS ACROSS OUR SCHOOLS. USING THE DASHBOARD RESULTS TO -- USING THE DASHBOARD RESULTS, SCHOOLS ARE IDENTIFIED, FOR FEDERAL SUPPORT, IF STUDENTS ARE PERFORMING VERY LOW OR NOT IMPROVING. NOW, LET ME CLARIFY ONE THING. THEY COULD HAVE RANKED ALL 10 OF THESE AREAS AS MOST IMPORTANT. SO THEY HAD THE OPTION OF RANKING ALL OF THEM FROM ONE TO FIVE. THEY DIDN'T HAVE TO PUT THEM IN ORDER OF IMPORTANCE. JUST THE LEVEL OF IMPORTANCE. ATHLETICS, 27.9% OF THEM SAID THAT THAT'S EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. COLLEGE PREPAREDNESS. 56.5% SAID THAT IT'S EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. 63.9, CAREER PREPAREDNESS.

I ATTENDED A PAWS ASSEMBLY, WHICH WAS SUPER CUTE. I THINK OUR BOARD WOULD HAVE LOVED IT. THEY BASICALLY HAD A REPORT AND THEY INCORPORATED THEIR OWN STUDENTS DOING IT. AND THEY JUST WENT BACK AND REITERATED THE RULES AND THE EXPECTATIONS AND INCENTIVES AT THEIR SCHOOL, WHICH I THINK EVERY SCHOOL SHOULD DO AFTER THE BREAK. YOU HAVE TO BRING THE KIDS BACK.
