INTERIM SUPERINTENDENT , KEVIN AND GUESTS. I AM A SPECIAL EDUCATION COORDINATOR FOR WORKABILITY ONE AND TRANSITION PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM WITH DEPARTMENT OF REHABILITATION AND I'M HERE TO SHARE INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE WITH ALL OF YOU. AS MANY OF YOU KNOW OCTOBER IS NATIONAL DISABILITY EMPLOYMENT OF THIS MONTH, THE THEME , THIS YEAR THE THEME IS ACCESS TO GOOD JOBS FOR ALL, THIS EMPHASIZES THE IMPORTANCE OF INCLUSIVITY IN THE WORKPLACE. UNFORTUNATELY THE EMPLOYMENT OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES DOES NOT OFTEN RECEIVE THE ATTENTION IT DESERVES WITH THE UNEMPLOYMENT RATE TWICE OF THOSE WITH NO DISABILITY. A SIGNIFICANT GAP IN OPPORTUNITIES FOR THIS COMMUNITY WHICH IS WHY OUR WORK IS SO VITAL. CELEBRATING NEURAL DIVERSITY IN THE WORKPLACE WE RECOGNIZE THE UNIQUE TALENTS AND PERSPECTIVE THAT INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES BRING. IT IS ESSENTIAL TO UNDERSTAND EVERYONE REGARDING REGARDLESS OF THEIR ABILITIES HAS A RIGHT TO GAINFUL EMPLOYMENT AND TO CONTRIBUTE MEANINGFULLY TO SOCIETY.

THANK YOU. BELLFLOWER UNIFIED CAN BOAST HAVING BEEN AWARDED THE FIRST WORKABILITY ONE GRANT IN THE REGION OVER 35 YEARS AGO. THIS MILESTONE REPRESENTS DECORATIVE DEDICATION TO SUPPORTING STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES AS THEY DEVELOP WORKPLACE READINESS SKILLS, PROGRAMS EMPOWER STUDENTS TO TRANSITION SUCCESSFULLY INTO THE WORKPLACE, EQUIPPING THEM WITH TOOLS AND CONFIDENCE THEY NEED TO THRIVE. THIS YEAR ALONE WE HAVE INCREASED PLACEMENTS BY 30% WHICH TELLS US STUDENTS WANT TO WORK AND IT ALSO TELLS US THAT COMMUNITY AND BUSINESS PARTNERS ARE BREAKING AWAY FROM PAST STEREOTYPES AND OPENING THEIR DOORS TO AN INCLUSIVE WORKFORCE. AS WE CONSIDER THE THEME OF ACCESS TO GOOD JOBS FOR ALL I HOPE OUR PURPOSE AND STUDENTS RESONATE WITH YOU AS A MOTIVATE AND INSPIRE US DAILY.

WE WANT OPEN DOORS FOR CHILDREN FAMILY AND NEIGHBORS HAVE OUTSTANDING QUALITY OF LIFE AND TO QUOTE THE CEO GOOGLE A DIVERSE MIX OF VOICES LEADS TO BETTER DISCUSSION, DECISIONS AND OUTCOMES. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND I INVITE YOU TO

COMMUNICATIONS TONIGHT? OKAY. NO TIME FOR THE SUPERINTENDENT

REPORT. >> THANK YOU, AND EVENING I LIKE TO THANK SCHOOL STAFF AND PT FOR SUPPORTING RED RIBBON WEEK. THIS MONTH WE RESUBMITTED UPDATED PLANS TO THE DSA INCLUDING EXTENDED FIRE LANE THROUGH THE FIELD AND ADDITIONAL FIRE HYDRANT NEXT TO THE HOME BLEACHERS. IN ADDITION TO WORKING WITH DSA WE ARE COORDINATING WITH LA COUNTY FLOOD CONTROL FOR APPROVAL TO UTILIZE THE FLOOD CONTROL SPACE FOR PARKING AS WELL AS COMPLETING THE REQUIRED CALIFORNIA GEOLOGICAL SURVEY REPORT FOR THE ENTIRE PROJECT.

WHILE THERE IS SIGNIFICANT WORK TO BE DONE BEFORE BREAKING GROUND WE ARE COMMITTED TO ENSURING THE PROJECT PROCEEDS SAFELY AND EFFICIENTLY. WE LOOK FORWARD TO THE PROJECT GOING

[00:10:02]

OUT TO BID AND START OF THE CONSTRUCTION. LASTLY I WOULD LIKE TO WISH EVERYBODY A SPECIAL HARVEST EVENT AND ACTIVITIES WEEK COMING UP. BELIEVE IT OR NOT NOVEMBERS GOING TO BE UPON US VERY SOON. THANK YOU.

[9. DISCUSSION ITEMS ]

>> THANK YOU MISS AZEVEDO. OKAY MOVING ON TO DISCUSSION ITEMS WE HAVE TWO DISCUSSION ITEMS THIS EVENING. KICKING IT BACK

TO YOU, MISS AZEVEDO. >> FIRST DISCUSSION ITEM IS ITEM 9.1, NUTRITION SERVICES UPDATE AND I WILL TURN IT OVER TO DIRECTOR OF NUTRITION SERVICES.

>> SO TODAY I'M GOING TO GIVE AN UPDATE ON WHEREVER NUTRITION SERVICES AND SCHOOL MEALS. SO . THIS BUTTON?

>> THANK YOU. >> WOULD YOU LIKE TO START SHARING WHILE THEY WORK ON THE TECHNOLOGY PORTION OF IT?

>> WHAT YOU'LL SEE IS THE ORGANIZATIONAL CHART. FIVE ADMINISTERED A STAFF INCLUDING MYSELF AND HAVE THE FSA 2, FSM, WAREHOUSE AND DELIVERY DRIVERS AND FSA 3 WHICH WORK AT THE CENTRAL KITCHEN. WE HAVE FOUR PROGRAMS. 60 PLUS EMPLOYEES ALL INVOLVED. WE HAVE FOUR PROGRAMS, THE NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM OR THE CHILD AND ADULT CARE FOOD PROGRAM FOR AFTERSCHOOL SUPPER. CATERING AND SEAMLESS SUMMER OPTION.

WHICH IS WHAT WE PROVIDE OVER THE SUMMER. THE NEXT SLIDE WILL SHOW THE KITCHEN SITES. WE HAVE 12 KITCHEN SITES OR 12 SITES WITH KITCHENS AND TWO WITHOUT KITCHENS, SOMERSET AND LOST FLOREZ SO THAT'S GOING OVER THAT. OUR CENTRAL KITCHEN IS WHERE WE HAVE OUR PRODUCTION KITCHEN WHERE WE PREPARE ALL SUPPER MEALS WITH THE WAREHOUSE AND FREEZER SO A LOT OF MEALS ARE DELIVERED STRAIGHT FROM THE CENTRAL KITCHEN. AND THE NEXT SLIDE WE WOULD COVER AFTER THAT SHOWS CAFETERIA FUND. MAYBE WE CAN GO TO THAT ONCE IT IS UP. OKAY.

>> THE BOARD HAS PAPER COPIES TOO.

>> SO THEN WE LOOK AT THE CAFETERIA FUND FROM LAST YEAR.

THAT'S WHERE YOU'LL SEE THE NSLP, , SUPPLY CHAIN ASSISTANCE FUND, THE KITCHEN INFRASTRUCTURE. YOU WILL SEE IT LISTED THREE TIMES. THE FIRST TWO ARE FROM 2021-2022. THOSE FUNDS WERE AWARDED TO US AS A GRAND BECAUSE OF COVID. SO ALL THE DISTRICTS WERE AWARDED THE KITCHEN INFRASTRUCTURE FUND AND THE SUPPLY CHAIN ASSISTANCE FUNDS BECAUSE OF SUPPLY CHAIN ISSUES AFTER COVID. THAT'S WHAT YOU WILL SEE IT LISTED QUITE A FEW TIMES THERE. THE FIRST TWO KITCHEN INFRASTRUCTURE AMOUNTS, THAT'S WHAT'S LEFT FROM THE 2021-22

[00:15:02]

YEAR AND 2022 KITCHEN INFRASTRUCTURE, THAT'S WHAT WE WERE AWARDED IN 2022. CATERING IS ALSO LISTED, BUT CATERING IS A NONPROGRAM RESOURCE SO IT'S LISTED THERE BUT IT IS NOT INCLUDED AS PART OF OUR FUND. IT IS PART OF FUND 13 BUT WE CANNOT CLAIMANT AS FAR AS HOW THE FUNDS ARE SPENT. THEY ARE NOT SPENT ON THE STUDENTS. THAT BRINGS TOTAL RESTRICTED BALANCE TO ABOUT 7.5. SO I KNOW WE ARE ON A SPEND DOWN PLAN WITH EXCESS FUNDS AS I'M SURE YOU ARE WELL AWARE. THERE ARE QUITE A FEW THINGS IN PLACE NOW AS FAR AS IMPROVEMENTS TO START SPENDING KNOWN EXCESS FUNDS. FIRST IS STAFFING. I DO WANT TO THANK YOU FOR APPROVING THE FIVE HOURS, THE 3.5 FOR THE MANAGER AND FSA 2. SO WE HAVE PUT THAT IN EFFECT AS OF SEPTEMBER 20. AND THEN WHISTLE PLAN TO FILL IN 10 VACANCIES WHICH WERE PRETTY MUCH FILLED AS OF NOW AND I PLAN TO OPEN OTHER POSITIONS AT HIGH SCHOOLS. WAREHOUSE DELIVERY SUPERVISOR WAS APPROVED AND WE'RE STILL WORKING ON THAT POSITION AS FAR AS THE DETAILS OF THE JOB DUTIES AND HOPEFULLY COMING SOON, KITCHEN SUPERVISOR , AS WELL. OTHER IMPROVEMENTS.

KITCHENS, WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF REMODELING BELLFLOWER HIGH WITH A GOAL OF STARTING BY SUMMER 2025. SO THAT WILL ALSO DIP INTO SIGNIFICANTLY SPENDING DOWN. WE DON'T HAVE AN EXACT AMOUNT FOR HOW MUCH IT WILL SPEND BUT THE CONTRACTOR DID KIND OF SAY IT WOULD BE A $2 MILLION PROJECT. THOSE NUMBERS ARE NOT CONFIRMED YET SO THAT TENTATIVE. WHEELS OF A PLAN TO REMODEL RAMONA AND ERNIE PYLE IN THE FOLLOWING YEARS. WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF PURCHASING NEW EQUIPMENT. WE HAVE BEEN PURCHASING NEW EQUIPMENT CONTINUOUSLY. IT'S ONLY BEEN TWO MONTHS AND WE HAVE PURCHASED 120,000 UP TO $140,000 WORTH OF NEW EQUIPMENT. SO THAT CAN ALSO GO UP ANYWHERE TO 400,000 PLUS NEW EQUIPMENT THROUGHOUT OUR DEPARTMENT. USD FRESH IS WHAT WE STARTED SO YOU PUT IN SALAD BARS IN ALL KITCHENS, UTILIZING THE SERVING LINE. WE ARE INFLUENCING THE FREIGHT FARM, MAYFAIR GREENHOUSE AND WE ARE BRINGING IN LOCAL PRODUCE FROM OLD GROVE ORANGE FORMS IN SAN BERNARDINO. SO THEY ARE DELIVERING ORGANIC AND FRESH PRODUCE TO OUR SCHOOL SITES OR CENTRAL KITCHEN AND WE DELIVER TO THE SCHOOL SITES IN THE SAME DAY. THAT'S ANOTHER IMPROVEMENT AND HERE ARE SOME PICTURES. HERE ARE SOME PICTURES OF THE SALAD BAR THIS YEAR. SET UP ON THE SERVING LINE SO THOSE ARE FRESH WATERMELON WE ACTUALLY GOT FROM OLD GROVE ORANGE . CELERY STICKS AND PEARS . FRESHLY CUT HOLE ORANGES AND THE KIDS PREFER THE WHOLE FRUIT AS OPPOSED TO PACKAGED. NEXT SLIDE, MORE PICTURES. THESE ARE SOLIDS AND PLUMS, ALL OF THIS FRESHLY PREPARED. SOME OF THE FRESHLY PREPARED BREAKFAST ITEMS. YOGURT, BREAKFAST PIZZA WE MAKE FROM SCRATCH. THE NEWEST ITEM, BAGELS WHERE THE STRAWBERRY JAM IS MADE WITH FRESH STRAWBERRIES. WE HAD CHEESE GRITS AND THEN THE BURRITO THAT WE MAKE IN HOUSE.

NEXT SLIDE. AND WE HAVE FRESHLY PREPARED LUNCH. HERE ARE SOME ITEMS WITH ORANGE CHICKEN, BROWN RICE BROCCOLI. THIS IS CHICKEN SALAD WITH FRESH CILANTRO DRESSING THAT WE ALSO MAKE IN-HOUSE AND THEN CHICKEN ALFREDO IN THE TOP LEFT CORNER.

NEXT SLIDE. THIS IS SOMETHING I WANTED TO BRING TO YOUR ATTENTION. NOT IMMEDIATE, BUT SOMETHING COMING UP IN THREE YEARS OR SO. THERE HAS BEEN A CHANGE TO THE NUTRITION STANDARDS. SO THERE'S GOING TO BE A REDUCTION IN THE ADDED SUGAR AND SODIUM AMOUNTS. THE CDE IS RECOMMENDING WE SLOWLY IMPLEMENT OVER THE NEXT THREE YEARS WITH THE HOPE THAT THE

[00:20:04]

STUDENT PALLETS WILL BE ADJUSTED BY THE THIRTY-YEAR AND THEY WILL BE MORE TOLERABLE FOR THEM TO BE ABLE TO ENJOY THE LOW-SODIUM OR LOWER SODIUM AND LOWER ADDED SUGAR FOODS. SO LIKE I SAID THAT IS IN THREE YEARS. SO SOME OF THE THINGS THAT COULD COME BECAUSE OF THIS IS SCRATCH MADE MEALS BECAUSE TYPICALLY PROCESSED FOOD HAS HIGHER SODIUM AND HIGHER ADDED SUGAR. SO THAT SOMETHING WE ARE KEEPING IN MIND. WITH THAT IN MIND WE HAVE A PLAN TO PROMOTE FARM FRESH. HAVING THE FARMERS MARKET SIDE PRESENTATION, OLD GROVE ORANGE DOES FARMERS MARKET SIDE PRESENTATIONS WHERE THEY DO A LITTLE MINI FARMERS MARKET TO GET THE KIDS USED TO THE FRESH FRUITS AND VEGETABLES. SO THAT IS SOMETHING WE WILL ALSO BE DOING , CONTINUING SERVING LINE IMPROVEMENTS WITH REMODEL AND STAFFING. ADAPTING TO THE NEW NUTRITION GUIDELINES AND CONTINUE TO WORK WITH PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER ON MARKETING , SOCIAL MEDIA AND PUTTING FLYERS OUT ON OUR WEBSITE. AND THAT IS ALL I HAVE AS FAR AS THE PRESENTATION. ARE

THERE ANY QUESTIONS? >> THANK YOU FOR THE PRESENTATION. I WILL OPEN UP QUESTIONS TO MY COLLEAGUES.

SPOT YES, THANK YOU FOR THE PRESENTATION. I AM EXCITED ABOUT THE UPGRADES AND I AM KIND OF WORRIED ABOUT , I MEAN IT IS GREAT TO GRADUALLY REDUCE SODIUM AND SUGAR INTAKE BECAUSE IT DOES CONTRIBUTE TO HEALTH PROBLEMS LATER ON. ARE YOU PLANNING ON DOING MAY BE ANOTHER FAIR TO GET THE FAMILIES INVOLVED AND TO LET THE FAMILIES KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING TO TRY TO GET THEM ON TRACK? YOU KNOW THEY ARE HERE AT SCHOOL ONLY SIX HOURS A DAY, SIX OR SEVEN HOURS A DAY BUT THEN AFTER THAT, THEY HAVE MEALS AT HOME AND FAST FOOD YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN? ARE YOU PLANNING ANYTHING TO GET THE

FAMILIES INVOLVED AND ON BOARD? >> AS OF RIGHT NOW WE DID NOT HAVE ANYTHING PLANNED WITH THE FAMILIES. BUT I HAVE DONE IN MY PREVIOUS WORK AT OTHER DISTRICTS WHERE TYPICALLY WE HAVE A PARENT NIGHT WE SET UP A BOOTH AND HAVE THE PARENTS TASTE IS A FOOD AND GET FAMILIAR WITH SOME OF THE THINGS WE ARE OFFERING SO THAT COULD BE A POSSIBILITY OF SOMETHING WE DO IN THE NEAR FUTURE SO THEY ARE MORE AWARE

OF ALL THE UPDATES. >> I ENJOYED THE LAST ONE AT THE NUTRITION CENTER. THAT WAS, HERE I GO IT WAS THE FARM FRESH WHERE YOU HAD SALADS AT THE NUTRITION CENTER. WE CAN

REMEMBER WHAT YEAR. >> REMEMBERING THE FREIGHT FARM GRAND OPENING THE DIFFERENT STATIONS ?

>> YES. THAT WAS REALLY COOL AND TASTY. THAT'S WHAT I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO. SOMETHING ELSE LIKE THAT TO BRING IN THE FAMILIES TO LET THEM KNOW WHAT'S GOING ON BECAUSE THE KIDS GO HOME AND COMPLAIN. MY LAST ONE IS GRADUATING THIS YEAR, BUT SOMETIMES THEY WILL COMPLAIN LIKE MOM KNOW AND WE HAVE GUIDELINES TO FOLLOW IN ORDER TO RECEIVE THE FUNDS. I UNDERSTAND THAT. FAMILIES NEED TO COMMUNICATE THAT TO THE

FAMILIES, ALSO. >> THANK YOU MISS ARMSTRONG.

ANY OF THE QUESTIONS FROM MY COLLEGE? THIS IS A?

>> MY QUESTION PERTAINS TO THE REMODELING , WHAT IS IT YOU ARE

REMODELING IN THOSE SCHOOLS? >> RAMONA AND ERNIE PYLE ? WE HAVE NOT MET WITH THE CONTRACTOR YET , WE ARE FOCUSING ON VHS BUT RAMONA IS ONE OF THE OLDEST SITES. I KNOW THEY HAVE A KITCHEN WITH A SERVING LINE WHERE THEY ARE STILL USING THE OLD SCHOOL BURNERS, SO IT MAY BE A WHOLE KITCHEN REMODEL. I KNOW ERNIE PYLE HAS A WHOLE DISH ROOM AREA THAT WILL NEED TO BE PULLED UP SO FROM THERE IT COULD BE A

[00:25:07]

WHOLE KITCHEN REMODEL, MOST LIKELY A WHOLE REMODEL SIMILAR TO WHAT WE DID AT THE OTHER SITES WITH FOSTER AND

WASHINGTON A FEW YEARS BACK. >> ANY OF THE 12 SCHOOLS ON YOUR PRESENTATION, ARE THEY GOING TO BE GETTING A C?

>> THE AC IS NOT COVERED BY OUR FUNDS BECAUSE IT IS STRUCTURAL SO ANYTHING STRUCTURAL IS USUALLY GENERAL FUNDS, BUT WE HAVE BEEN TALKING WITH PATRICK AND HAD A FEW MEETINGS ON THE WAY WE WANT TO GO WITH THAT. WE WOULD NOT BE, IT WOULDN'T COME

FROM CAFETERIA FUND FOR THAT. >> OKAY THANK YOU THAT'S ALL

MY QUESTIONS. >> ONE FOLLOW-UP. AND OF THE FUNDS ARE DIFFERENT AND YOU MENTIONED FIRST OF ALL THANK YOU FOR THE WORK I KNOW YOU AND YOUR STAFF WORKED VERY HARD AND I'VE GOT A LOT OF FEEDBACK AND IT'S GREAT SO IT IS APPRECIATED. YOU MENTION THE CATERING FUND IS SEPARATE SO IS THAT CONSIDERED THE SAME CAFETERIA FUND RESTRICTED OR

SEPARATE? >> IT'S RESTRICTED. ANYTHING WE BRING IN FROM CAFETERIA FUND PAYS FOR ITSELF SO WE DON'T USE CAFETERIA FUND EXPENSES FOR EMPLOYEE, PAYROLL OR SUPPLIES, IT'S ALL SEPARATE AND COMES FROM WHATEVER WE MAKE FROM THE CAFETERIA FUND SO IT DOES NOT TIGHTEN.

>> COMPLETELY SEPARATE SO WHAT COMES OUT OF THE CATERING FUND?

>> JUST WHATEVER WE PURCHASE AS FAR AS THE MEALS THAT ARE ORDERED FROM CATERING SO THE BOARD MEALS, ANY MEALS OUTSIDE OF A SCHOOL DAY SO IF THERE IS A CARING ORDER SOMETIMES WE HAVE OTHER SITES WHO WILL ORDER SOMETHING FOR STAFF.

>> FEEDING ADULTS. OKAY. SO DOES IT GO TO STAFFING?

>> YES WE HAVE A CERTAIN PERCENTAGE THAT GOES TO CATERING DEPENDING ON THE AMOUNT OF TIME THEY SPEND.

SOMETIMES WHEN IT IS SLOW WITH CATERING THERE'S NOT AS MUCH FOR STAFF TO DO SO WE TRY TO SPLIT IT UP BUT WE SPLIT UP THE

PERCENTAGES . >> I WAS CATERING DOING? I BELIEVE LAST PRESENTATION WE WENT BACK A FEW YEARS AND IT FLUCTUATED. WHERE IS IT NOW COMPARED TO THREE YEARS AGO OR

LAST YEAR? >> AS A LAST YEAR IT WAS GOOD.

WE WERE ABLE TO MAKE ABOUT 30,000 OR SO. DON'T QUOTE ME ON THAT, BUT SO FAR THE START OF THIS YEAR WE HAVE NOT BEEN AS BUSY AS I REMEMBER FROM PREVIOUS YEARS SO I'M WATCHING THAT AS FAR AS WHAT THIS YEAR WILL LOOK LIKE. BUT WE HAVE NOT HAD THAT MANY ORDERS, SO FAR IN THE FIRST FEW MONTHS SO THAT

SOMETHING WE ARE LOOKING AT. >> IS THAT A BENEFIT TO THE OVERALL CAFETERIA GOAL? I KNOW YOUR STAFF CONTRACTS WITH THE CITY TO DO CATERING AND A COUPLE OTHER PLACES.

>> WE DO CATERING FOR DOWNEY WHENEVER WE GET ORDERS , BUT WE HAD OFFICIAL CONTRACT RIGHT BEFORE COVID SO WE HAD MORE ORDERS GOING TO THEM. NOT AS MUCH NOW SO WE ARE WATCHING TO SEE IF IT PICKS UP LATER IN THE YEAR.

>> OKAY I WILL KICK IT OVER TO VICE PRESIDENT STUART.

>> TO FOLLOW UP ON THE CATERING FUNDS. IF YOU'RE MAKING MONEY AND IT BUILDS AND BUILDS WHAT DO YOU SPEND IT ON?

>> FOR CATERING? MOST OF THE TIME IT IS SPENT ON CATERING STAFF. BECAUSE CATERING STAFF , OUR LEAD FOR EXAMPLE HAS BEEN WITH US QUITE SOME TIME. IF WE WERE TO PUT HER STRICTLY COMING FROM THE CATERING FUND IT WOULD USE THE MAJORITY OF WHAT WE ARE BRINGING IN FOR CATERING SO BASICALLY WE ARE NOT MAKING AS MUCH TO FUND ALL CATERING STAFF AT 100% SO WE HAVE SPLIT UP PERCENTAGES TO MAKE SURE WE AT LEAST BREAK EVEN OR ABOVE EVEN.

WE HAVE BEEN PRETTY LUCKY WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO HAVE A BIT OF

[00:30:02]

EXCESS. I KNOW PREVIOUS YEARS , THERE WAS ONE YEAR AFTER COVID SOMETIME WHERE WE WERE ABLE TO USE THE CAFETERIA FUNDS TO HELP PAY FOR THE SUMMER MEALS FOR THE KIDS BECAUSE WE DID NOT HAVE THE SUMMER PROGRAM APPROVED YET. IT WAS ALL NEW.

SO THAT'S ANOTHER BENEFIT TO THE CATERING FUNDS. BECAUSE IT IS SEPARATE FROM THE TYPICAL RESTRICTED FUNDS WE WERE ABLE TO USE IT FOR SUMMER MEALS THAT DID NOT QUALIFY. SO THAT'S

ANOTHER WAY WE USE THOSE FUNDS. >> THANK YOU. WITH THE ENDING FUND BALANCE ON THE SLIDE, YOU MENTIONED THE DIFFERENT GRANTS , I GUESS I WILL CALL THEM GRANTS, THOSE FUNDS. THERE'S ONE FROM 21-22 AND THE OTHER FROM 22. WHEN TO THOSE EXPIRE? I KNOW A LOT OF FUNDING EXPIRES.

>> SO ACTUALLY CDE TOOK AWAY THE EXPIRATION DATE FOR THE FIRST TWO KITCHEN IN THE STRUCTURE FUNDS AND 2022 EXPIRES JUNE 30 OF 2025. SO THOSE WE HAVE USED FOR SOME EXTRA TIME AND TRAINING AND KITCHEN EQUIPMENT. SO WHEN THOSE GO AWAY WE WILL NOT HAVE THAT AS AN ADDITIONAL.

>> THAT IS A GOOD SEGUE TO MY NEXT QUESTION. I'M NOT OBLIVIOUS TO THE FACT THAT WE'VE TALKED ABOUT THE FUND BEFORE SO I APPRECIATE YOU BEING HERE AND ANSWERING QUESTIONS. WITH THE TOTAL BALANCE I THINK IT WAS PROJECTED TO BE SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER, THE PROJECTION AND THAT'S WHY WE HAVE THE SPEND N, IS COMPLETE?

>> WE DID COMPLETE IT, MY ACCOUNT TECHNICIAN WAS WORKING TO UPDATE IT AND THE REPRESENTATIVE DID CONTACT US WITH THE FINAL AMOUNT TO SPEND DOWN.

>> CAN YOU PROVIDE THAT TO THE BOARD WHEN YOU HAVE IT AVAILABLE? THANK YOU. I APPRECIATE THE EFFORT TO DO THE SPEND DOWN, YOU MENTION STAFFING WITH 10 VACANCIES. IS THAT GOING TO BE AN ISSUE? IS THE ONGOING REVENUE ABLE TO MAINTAIN STAFFING OR IS THAT SOMETHING THAT'S TEMPORARY AND WHEN YOU SPEND DOWN YOU WON'T HAVE THOSE PEOPLE?

>> THE SPEND DOWN PLAN WITH CDE PUT INTO EFFECT , YOUR DISTRICTS UP TO FIVE YEARS TO SPEND DOWN BECAUSE WE RECOGNIZE IT'S A LOT OF MONEY TO USE WITHIN THE YEARS. SO WE PUT TOGETHER A BREAKDOWN THROUGHOUT THE YEARS AND WITH THE CARRYOVER, FIRST STARTING WITH THE SPEND DOWN THE AMOUNT CDE WANTS US TO COMPLETE, THAT WILL BE SPENT DOWN IN ABOUT TWO OR THREE YEARS. WHEN THAT , THAT'S WHAT WE PROPOSE BUT IT COULD BE SOONER DEPENDING ON INFLATION OR WHATEVER ELSE UNFORESEEN COMES . ONCE THAT AMOUNT IS SPENT DOWN IT WILL DIP INTO THE OTHER EXCESS FUNDS. ONCE WE PUT ANYTHING TOGETHER, IN THREE YEARS WE WOULD BE DOWN , BUT THREE YEARS IS WHEN THE NUTRITION GUIDELINES GO INTO EFFECT.

>> HOW DID WE GET TO THAT POINT BECAUSE IN POLICY CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG I THINK IT'S 10% OF THE ANNUAL COST IN THAT FUND AND I DID THE NUMBERS IT WAS DEFINITELY NOT 7.5 MILLION SO HOW DID HE GET TO THAT POINT? SOMETIMES WITH GRANTS AND FUNDING AND COVID CAN YOU GIVE ME A GENERAL EXPLANATION?

>> THAT'S A GOOD QUESTION. I THINK WHAT HAPPENED WAS WHEN I FIRST STARTED THE FIRST TWO YEARS WE WERE ACTUALLY IN THE RED SO NUTRITION SERVICES WAS IN THE RED. COVID, WE STARTED APPLYING FOR GRANTS WITH INTENTION THAT IT WOULD HELP GET US OUT OF THE RED. SO WE WERE AWARDED THE GRANTS, BUT IN THE PROCESS, THE CHANGES MADE TO THE MEALS UNEXPECTEDLY INCREASED PARTICIPATION IN THE FACT THAT MEALS BECAME FREE SO THE MEALS BECOMING FREE, THE GRANTS, THE EXTRA FUNDING, INCREASED PARTICIPATION , THE MONEY STARTED TO INCREASE IN

[00:35:04]

THE FUNDS HAD ALREADY COME IN. SO FROM MY STANDPOINT THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED TO GET US WHERE WE ARE NOW.

>> THAT IS FAIR. THE GOAL IS TO GET TO THE ALLOWED AMOUNT DO

YOU KNOW WHAT THAT AMOUNT IS? >> FOR THE RECENT ONE APPROVED?

>> PER POLICY HOW MUCH THE CAFETERIA FUND CAN HAVE?

>> SIX MONTHS. SIX MONTHS IS WHAT CDE ALLOWS. WE ARE OVER THE SIX MONTHS. THEY ALLOW DISTRICTS TO HAVE UP TO SIX

MONTHS EXCESS OR RESERVES. >> SIX MONTHS OF EXPENDITURE.

>> YES, SORRY. >> OKAY GREAT. A COUPLE MORE QUESTIONS. DOES ANYONE ELSE WANT TO JUMP IN? OKAY I KNOW MY COLLEAGUE BROUGHT UP THE AC. UNDERSTAND IT'S AFFIXED TO THE BUILDING IS A BUILDING IMPROVEMENT HOPEFULLY WE CAN FIGURE THAT OUT. WHAT, WHAT IS YOUR ASSESSMENT ON CAFETERIAS? WE HEAR A LOT ABOUT IT. CONDITIONS FOR THE WORKERS IS VERY IMPORTANT. WHAT'S YOUR ASSESSMENT AND WHAT DO YOU PLAN TO DO GOING FORWARD, IF ANYTHING TO HELP US ACCOMMODATE AND MAKE SURE CONDITIONS ARE SAFE AND COMFORTABLE?

>> WHEN I STARTED I WAS NOT AWARE OF WHAT WAS SET UP IN THE KITCHENS. I WAS TOLD IT WAS SWAMP COOLERS SO I HAD TO GET INFORMATION ON WHAT EXACTLY THAT DID AND HOW IT COOLS THE AIR. BUT THERE HAVE BEEN ISSUES AS FAR AS COOLING CAPABILITIES OF THE SWAMP COOLERS. I REACHED OUT TO OTHER DISTRICTS AND THEY ALSO CONFIRMED THEY TOO HAVE SWAMP COOLERS IN THE KITCHENS AND THE KITCHENS ARE TYPICALLY COLD FROM THE AIR CONDITIONER IN THE CAFETERIA. SO THERE IS A AC IN THE CAFETERIA, SWAMP COOLER IN THE KITCHEN AND THE GATES LET THEIR COME IN TO THE CAFETERIA. I KNOW ON THE HOTTEST DAYS AND IT HAS BEEN PRETTY HOT THIS YEAR, THAT DOES NOT ALWAYS WORK. SO LIKE I SAID WE HAVE BEEN DISCUSSING SOME OTHER OPTIONS BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN IN SOME OF THE KITCHENS WITH THE LADIES DURING MEAL

SERVICE. >> I AM WITH YOU. I HAVE BEEN IN THERE AND I KNOW IT IS A REAL ISSUE. 70 CAFETERIAS OR

KITCHENS DO NOT HAVE A SEAS? >> I DON'T BELIEVE ANY OF THE

KITCHENS. >> IS IT ANY?

>> MAYBE MAYFAIR. >> I WON'T HOLD YOU TO IT BUT I THINK THAT WOULD BE GREAT TO WORK TOGETHER ON FINDING THE SOLUTION. IT SEEMS LIKE A PROBLEM AND I CAN SEE

IMPROVEMENTS IN THAT. >> I WILL SAY SOME OF THE SITES SAY THAT WE ARE FINE AND OTHERS GET WARMER TEMPERATURES. I'M NOT SURE IF IT IS AN ISSUE WITH THE AC IN THE CAFETERIA LEADING

TO THAT. >> I THINK IT COMES DOWN TO IF ONE OF OUR WORKERS IS NOT COMFORTABLE IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT. SOME PEOPLE MAY HAVE DIFFERENT NEEDS OR BE A LITTLE LESS PRONE TO OVERHEATING. ALL WE CAN DO IS ALL WE CAN DO AND I'M SURE WE WILL DO SOMETHING. SORRY THEY ARE ALL POPPING UP

HERE. MISS GAZA. >> THANK YOU. ON THIS SLIDE FOR THE CAFETERIA FUND ENDING, TO CONFIRM KITCHEN INFRASTRUCTURE FUNDS AND INFRASTRUCTURE TRAINING FUNDS ARE COMING TO AN

END WITH A BEEN EXTENDED? >> THEY HAVE BEEN EXTENDED, THE FIRST TWO THE FUNDS IN THE TRAINING FUNDS 10,040 5000 .

ORIGINALLY THEY HAD A DEADLINE BUT THEY GOT RID OF THE DEADLINE. WE ARE JUST EXPECTED TO SPEND IT AND THIS IS THE REMAINING BALANCE WHICH IS PROBABLY LOWER BECAUSE WE PURCHASED MORE EQUIPMENT USING THIS FOR PURCHASE EQUIPMENT.

THEN THERE IS THE 2022 AMOUNT THAT DOES EXPIRE JUNE 30 THAT

DOES EXPIRE JUNE 30, 2025. >> WITH THAT FUND, WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE BE ABLE TO PURCHASE WITH THE INFRASTRUCTURE FUND

FOR THE 2022? >> THAT AMOUNT CAN GO TO ANY

[00:40:04]

REMODEL . ANY EXTRA TRAINING, HOURS, IT'S NOT AS RESTRICTED FOR THE KITCHEN INFRASTRUCTURE. WE HAVE A LITTLE MORE WIGGLE ROOM AS TO WHAT WE CAN SPEND FUNDS ON WITH KITCHEN

INFRASTRUCTURE. >> A SEAS?

>> POSSIBLY. >> IS 430,000 STILL THE AMOUNT YOU CURRENTLY HAVE OR YOU HAVE SPENT DOWN?

>> I WOULD HAVE TO CHECK WITH MY ACCOUNT TECH AND I CAN CHECK WITH CDE TO CONFIRM THE AC PURCHASE FOR KITCHEN

INFRASTRUCTURE. >> PERFECT, THANK YOU.

>> THAT YOU MISS GAZA, MISS STEWART.

>> DO YOU KNOW I WILL HAVE AC AT MAYFAIR?

>> I'M NOT 100% SURE. >> CAN WE FIND OUT? CAN WE GET THE ON A FRIDAY MEMO PLEASE? AND I GUESS MY NEXT ONE. I GUESS THIS IS MORE FACILITIES, BUT ARE ANY KITCHENS WITH ONE

COOLERS NOT WORKING? >> I WOULD NOT BE OF THE

ANSWER. >> CAN WE GET THAT ON THE FRIDAY MEMO AND MY NEXT QUESTION FOR STAFF IF THE SWAMP COOLERS ARE NOT WORKING WHAT DO WE DO FOR THEM , THERE SHOULD BE A WORK ORDER IN THE SYSTEM.

>> LET US KNOW IF SOME OF THEM ARE NOT WORKING, THANK YOU.

>> PATRICK IS AWARE WE HAVE BEEN IN CONTACT AND WE HAVE PROVIDED FANS, COMMERCIAL SIZED FANS FOR ALL OF OUR SITES, BUT AS FAR AS WHICH DON'T WORK AND WHICH ONES DO WORK AND ARE JUST

NOT COOLING I'M NOT TOO SURE. >> I'M ASKING BECAUSE I'M A PE TEACHER AT MY SCHOOL AND WE USED TO HAVE SWAMP COOLERS.

IMAGINE IN THE LOCKER ROOM WITH A BUNCH OF GIRLS IN THERE IT'S REALLY HOT SO I CAN'T IMAGINE WITH THE KITCHEN IN THE DISTRICT PUT IN AC AND IT'S A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE. I CAN'T IMAGINE HAVING KITCHEN WORKERS WORKING WITH FANS SO IF THIS ONE COOLERS ARE NOT WORKING I WOULD HOPE WE CAN GET ON THAT ASAP SO THEY ARE WORKING, THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU. I HAVE ONE MORE QUESTION IN THIS KIND OF A CALL BACK TO WHEN WE TALKED AT THE BOARD. ONE OF THE THINGS, I THINK THE WORK AND THINGS WE HAVE GOING ON WITH FRESH FOOD IS SUCH AN IMPROVEMENT. PART OF MARKETING AND UPLIFTING THE DISTRICT IS REALLY GETTING THE WORD OUT TO KNOW EACH DEPARTMENT PLAYS ITS OWN AS THE DISTRICT DOES, BUT SOMETIMES WHEN I SEE OUR VEHICLES, THE TRUCKS, THEIR REAL ESTATE TO SHOW OFF WHAT WE DO. HAS THERE BEEN FOR THE DISCUSSION SINCE THE LAST TIME ON HOW TO USE THOSE ASSETS TO MARKET THE GOOD WORK WE ARE DOING TO SHOW PARENTS FRESH FOODS AND MARKET

THE PROGRAM? >> WE PURCHASED A NEW DELIVERY TRUCK AND WE ARE TALKING ABOUT PURCHASING A CAR AND GETTING SOME SORT OF LOGO OR PICTURE OR NOT A STICKER. FOR LIKE A VINYL WRAP FOR OUR VEHICLES TO SPRUCE UP THE MARKETING AND LET THEM KNOW ABOUT NUTRITION SERVICES AND WHAT WE OFFER.

>> THERE IS A SENSE OF PRIDE AND MARKETING. ALSO IT SHOWS PARENTS BECAUSE I MEAN YOU SEE THEM DRIVING AROUND THE COMMUNITY ALL THE TIME, MIGHT AS WELL USE IT TO SHOW THE GOOD

WORK. MISS GAZA. >> THANK YOU. TO PIGGYBACK, DURING OUR HOPEFULLY UPCOMING WHAT IS IT CALLED? WE PROMOTE OURSELVES WITH SCHOOL OF CHOICE AND MAYBE SCHOOL FAIR.

ENROLLMENT CAMPAIGN. WE HAVE THOUGHTS ABOUT INCLUDING NUTRITION SERVICES TO MAKE A PRESENTATION WITH A BOOTH OR EVEN HOP ALONGSIDE WITH STAFF AND WHENEVER YOUR TWO DIFFERENT EVENTS WHERE WE WANT TO MAKE SURE PEOPLE KNOW THESE ARE THE KINDS OF SERVICES AND QUALITY FOODS WE SERVE KIDS. I CAN TELL YOU THIS LOOKS SO MUCH BETTER THAN SOME OF THE OTHER DISTRICTS AROUND US AND I THINK THAT WOULD HELP PARENTS TO MAKE THOSE DECISIONS BECAUSE BETWEEN COMING TO OUR DISTRICT WERE

[00:45:02]

STAYING IN THEIR HOME DISTRICT. >> IS IT ON ME? I THOUGHT IT

WAS A QUESTION. >> DO YOU HAVE ANY THOUGHTS

ABOUT DOING THAT? >> WE WILL TAKE THAT ABSOLUTELY. SOUNDS LIKE A GREAT IDEA.

>> THANK YOU, ANYBODY ELSE? GOING ONCE, GOING TWICE. THANK YOU. APPRECIATE ALL THE CLARITY, THE WORK YOU AND YOUR STAFF ARE DOING, YOU'RE DOING FANTASTIC AND THANK YOU FOR ENTERING ALL THE QUESTIONS.

WE WILL NOW MOVE ON TO THE NEXT DISCUSSION ITEM, NEXT ITEM 9.2 CALIFORNIA ASSESSMENT OF STUDENT PERFORMANCE AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY ASSESSMENT FOR CALIFORNIA PROGRESS UPDATE.

I WILL TURN IT OVER TO MISS CARTER.

>> THANK YOU. OKAY, TONIGHT, I WILL BE SHARING AN UPDATE ON THE RECENT STATE TESTING INFORMATION THAT POSTED FOR THE PUBLIC. A VARIETY OF DATA IS RELEASED AND COLLECTED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. STATE TESTING DATA IS RELEASED PRELIMINARILY IN AUGUST WITH THE FINAL RESULTS RELEASED IN OCTOBER. BY DECEMBER THE STATE WILL BE RELEASING DASHBOARD DATA AFTER OTHER YOUR LOCAL DATA WILL BE COLLECTED, REVIEWED AND USED IT TO INFORM PLANS. FOR EXAMPLE SITES HAVE BEEN LOOKING AT DATA SINCE AUGUST AND WILL PROVIDE PROGRESS UPDATES IN NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER INCLUDING SITE GOALS, PLC GOALS AND COMMITMENTS AND NEXT STEPS.

INCH MARK SCORES HAVE BEEN POSTED TO SCHOOLS AND SITES SHOULD BE AND ARISING RESULTS. ALSO INFORMATION REGARDING STUDENT MATH RESULT RECENTLY POLLED DISTRICTWIDE AND PROVIDED TO SITE ADMINISTRATION TO USE WHILE PROGRESS MONITORING THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. AS WE REVIEW DATA IT'S IMPORTANT TO PUT IN CONTEXT THE EXPERIENCES THAT STUDENTS HAVE UNDERGONE ALTHOUGH WE SHOULD NOT USE COVID AS A REASON FOR STUDENT DIFFICULTIES AND BARRIERS TO LEARNING AS WE ARE IN OUR FOURTH YEAR OF CYNICAL SINCE THE CLOSURES WE CANNOT IGNORE THE IMPACT THAT CLOSING SCHOOLS AND ISOLATION THAT STUDENTS EXPERIENCED FOR ALMOST 2 YEARS HAD ON THEM.

THIRD-GRADE STUDENTS LAST YEAR WERE PREKINDERGARTEN, SEVENTH GRADERS WERE THIRD-GRADE STUDENTS AND 11TH GRADE STUDENTS WERE IN SEVENTH GRADE AND THE 2019 -2020 SCHOOL YEAR.

THIS GIVES US CONTEXT OF THE CURRENT FOURTH GRADE STUDENTS HAVE THE MOST INTERRUPTION IN THE BEGINNING OF THEIR SCHOOL YEARS. WHEN LOOKING AT THE DATA IN COMPARISON TO PRE-COVID THE STUDENTS HAVE NOT YET REBOUNDED TO THE PROFICIENCY OF THEIR PREDECESSORS WHEREAS OTHER GRADE LEVELS HAVE BEGUN TO CLOSE THE GAP. THE FOLLOWING DATA REPRESENT ENGLISH-LANGUAGE ARTS, MATH AND SCIENCE RESULTS WITH STUDENTS IN GRADES THREE THROUGH EIGHT AND 11 ARE TESTED IN ELA AND MATH AND FIFTH AND EIGHTH AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ARE TESTED IN SCIENCE, THESE TESTS ARE BROKEN INTO CLAIMS REFERENCED IN THE TABLE ON THE SLIDE. THE OVERALL SCORE IS BASED ON ADAPTIVE MULTIPLE-CHOICE EXAM AND A PERFORMANCE TASK REQUIRING STUDENTS TO CRITICALLY THINK AND SOLVE MULTILAYERED QUESTIONS AND EXPLAIN THEIR REASONING. IN ELA THAT LOOKS LIKE NSA. STUDENTS GOING TO, THREE OR FOUR ANSWER ON GRADE LEVEL QUESTIONS BUT THE LEVEL OF COMPLEXITY OF QUESTIONS ANSWERED MAY VARY DEPENDING ON KNOWLEDGE OF THE STANDARD.

STUDENT SCORING FOUR OR THREE ARE MANY COMPLEXITY WHERE STUDENTS GOING TWO HAVE A FOUNDATIONAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE STANDARD, STUDENTS SCORING ONE ARE NOT CONSISTENTLY UNDERSTANDING GRADE LEVEL KNOWLEDGE. THE FOLLOWING DATA WILL PROVIDE INFORMATION ON THE PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS MEETING OR EXCEEDING EARNING A FOUR OR THREE ON STATE EXAMS DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR. SLIGHTLY DECREASING OR BASICALLY MAINTAINING THE LEVEL OF PROFICIENCY OF STUDENTS MEETING OR EXCEEDING STANDARD FOR SCIENCE LAST YEAR . STUDENTS SCORED BETTER THAN THREE SURROUNDING DISTRICTS HOWEVER BELLFLOWER WAS LOWER THAN THE COUNTY. ACROSS THE DISTRICT 4 SCHOOLS IMPROVED IN COMPARISON TO THE PREVIOUS YEAR. THIS IS THE FIRST YEAR DATA HAS BEEN VISUALIZED IN THIS MANNER. IT WAS DISPLAYED THIS WAY IN THE MOST RECENT PRINCIPAL MEETING SO THEY COULD HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN STRATEGIES

[00:50:01]

AND PRACTICES THAT SCHOOLS DETERMINED SHOWED IMPROVEMENT AND ATTRIBUTED TO THEIR IMPROVEMENT. WHEN LOOKING AT SCORES ACROSS THREE YEARS WE ARE ABLE TO SEE TRENDS WITH SCORES INCREASING OVER THREE YEARS SHOWING A POSITIVE TREND, THOSE THAT DECLINE SHOWING NEGATIVE TREND AND THOSE THAT NEITHER INCREASE NOR DECREASE SHOW NO TREND. TREND INFORMATION HELPS TEACHER LEADERS MAKE INSTRUCTIONAL DECISIONS WHEN REVIEWING DATA. IN SCIENCE THREE SCHOOLS SHOWED A POSITIVE TREND OVER THE LAST THREE YEARS. BELLFLOWER MAINTAIN PROFICIENCY LEVELS OF STUDENTS ON THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS ASSESSMENT SCORING BETTER THAN THREE SURROUNDING DISTRICTS BUT NOT BETTER THAN THE COUNTY OR STATE SCORES. THE TREND SHOWS FOUR SCHOOLS WITH POSITIVE TRENDS AND TWO WITH NEGATIVE. THE REMAINING HAVE NO TREND WITH SOME OF THE PRACTICES AND STRATEGIES SHARED BY PRINCIPLES THAT THE SITE FOUND TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN IMPROVING OUTCOMES ARE EMPHASIZING AND PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR TEACHER COLLABORATION, VERTICAL ALIGNMENT AND REGULARLY LOOKING AT DATA. IN COMPARISON TO THE PREVIOUS YEAR, SIX SCHOOLS MADE IMPROVEMENT, AT THE LAST PRINCIPAL MEETING PRINCIPAL SHARED NOT ONLY PRACTICES THAT SUPPORTED STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT IN COMPARISON TO LAST YEAR BUT ALSO HOW SITES ARE PLANNING TO IMPROVE STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT BASED ON THE SCORES WITH MANY SITES NOTING THERE WAS A MORE CONCERTED EFFORT AND EMPHASIS ON VERTICAL ALIGNMENT IN ELEMENTARY AND DEPARTMENT ARTICULATION IN THE SECONDARY STARTING IN AUGUST CONTINUING IN SEPTEMBER. SITE DAYS PROVIDED ALLOWED SITES TO PROVIDE PD TO TEACHERS TO START THE YEAR WITH A MORE FOCUSED BEGINNING AND THIS YEAR MORE SITES ARE BUDGETING FOR RELEASE DAYS FOR GRADE LEVEL TEAMS TO CONTINUE ALIGNMENT AND DATA ANALYSIS CULTURE THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. INTERVIEWING GRADE LEVEL ACHIEVEMENT OVER THE LAST THREE YEARS IN COMPARISON TO SCORING PRE-COVID THE DATA SHOWS 11TH GRADE STUDENTS HAVE CLOSED THE GAP IN COMPARISON TO PRE-COVID. THIRD-GRADE STUDENTS ARE THE FURTHEST FROM CLOSING THE GAP HOWEVER IF YOU REVIEW THE COHORT DATA FOR THE PREVIOUS THIRD-GRADE STUDENTS YOU CAN SEE A POSITIVE TREND FOR THOSE THIRD-GRADERS MOVING FROM 3RD TO 4TH TO 5TH GRADE. WHEN REVIEWING THE DATA, THE SAME DATABASE STUDENT GROUPS WE SEE THE LONG-TERM ENGLISH LEARNERS HAVE MADE PROGRESS BUT ENGLISH LEARNER POPULATION SHOWS NO TREND. RECLASSIFICATION STUDENT GROUP IS CLOSING THE GAP WITH EACH YEAR INCREASING PROFICIENCY AS IS THE SAME FOR STUDENTS THAT ARE ECONOMICALLY DISADVANTAGED WHITE STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES, THE REMAINING GROUP SHOWS NO TREND WITH STUDENT SUPPORT, TO SUPPORT ENGLISH LEARNER POPULATIONS THE INSTRUCTION DIVISION IS ALSO REVIEWING AND DEVELOPING ELD AND NEWCOMER PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES. WORKING TO IDENTIFY IF A LEVEL ONE READING PROGRAM SIMILAR TO THAT OF WHICH WE HAVE FOR MATH MAY BENEFIT STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT DISTRICTWIDE. ALSO WE HAVE DEVELOPED A TRACKING SHEET FOR SITE ADMINISTRATORS WHICH IDENTIFIES PERTINENT DATA WITH REGARD TO ENGLISH LEARNERS THAT WE ARE PROVIDING TO ADMINISTRATORS WHICH INCLUDES TOTAL STUDENTS RECLASSIFIED FOR STUDENTS AT EACH LEVEL AND THE ENGLISH LEARNER ACHIEVEMENT ON ASSESSMENT. WE PLAN TO CONTINUE TO PROVIDE THAT TO ADMINISTRATORS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. FOR MATH, THE PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS THAT MET OR EXCEEDED STANDARD IN BELLFLOWER ON THE MATH ASSESSMENT IS MORE THAN TWO SURROUNDING DISTRICTS WITH BELLFLOWER INCREASING TWO PERCENTAGE POINTS WHICH IS A LARGER INCREASE THAN FIVE SURROUNDING DISTRICTS IN THE COUNTY AND THE STATE. THE DISTRICT OVERALL AND SEVEN SITES SHOW A POSITIVE TREND OVER THE LAST THREE YEARS WITH SOME STRATEGIES ACTIVITY TO MATH IMPROVEMENT FOR THE IMPLEMENTATION OF MATH WITH THE USE OF COMMON ASSESSMENT. IN COMPARISON TO LAST YEAR NINE SCHOOLS SHOWED IMPROVED STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT ON THE MATH ASSESSMENT. THIRD-GRADE SIMILAR TO ELA HAS THE LARGEST GAP TO FILL SINCE COVID BUT THE OTHER GRADE LEVELS ARE BEGINNING TO CLOSE THE GAP. WHEN LOOKING AT HOW STUDENT GROUPS SCORED ON THE ASSESSMENT, SIMILAR TO ELA, LONG TIME ENGLISHNESS MADE IMPROVING, ENGLISH LEARNERS MAINTAIN LOW LEVEL PROFICIENCY AND STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES HAVE A POSITIVE TREND OVER THE

[00:55:05]

LAST THREE YEARS. IN COMPARISON TO LAST YEAR ALL BUT ONE STUDENT GROUP HAS IMPROVED. SWITCHING TO OUR ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY ASSESSMENT , THIS DATA WAS RELEASED AS FINAL, THIS TEST IS ADMINISTERED TO ENGLISH LEARNERS ANNUALLY TO DETERMINE STUDENT LEVEL OF PROFICIENCY AND READINESS TO RECLASSIFY. STUDENTS EARNING FOUR MAY QUALIFY TO BE RECLASSIFIED AND NO LONGER NEED TO RETAKE THE TEST, THE TEST IS ADMINISTERED ACROSS MULTIPLE GRADES WHERE THE COMPLEXITY OF THE TEST CHANGES BASED ON STUDENT PROGRESS . STUDENTS ARE SCORED ON A SCALE OF ONE THROUGH FOUR.

FOUR MEETING SKILLS ARE WELL-DEVELOPED AND ONE MEANING ENGLISH SKILLS ARE BEGINNING. TO SET THE CONTEXT PRIOR TO LOOKING AT THE ENGLISH PROFICIENCY SCORES PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THE GULF ENGLISH LEARNER STUDENTS IS TO SCORE 4 ON THE ELPAC SO THEY MAY QUALIFY FOR RECLASSIFICATION, THIS CHART SHOWS THE CLASSIFICATION PERCENTAGE. THE STATE STOPPED REPORTING DATA IN 21-22 SO WE BEGAN PULLING OUR OWN DATA THE FOLLOWING YEARS. UPON RETURN FROM COVID THERE WERE FEW RECLASSIFICATIONS BUT THERE HAS BEEN A CONCERTED EFFORT TO ENSURE ALL STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO RECLASSIFY IF THEY MEET THE CRITERIA. WE FOUND PULLING DATA FROM THE DISTRICT LEVEL AND SENDING REMINDERS AS WELL AS REVISITING AND REVISING ENGLISH LEARNER MASTER PLAN IN 2324 HELP STAKEHOLDERS UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF RECLASSIFYING STUDENTS.

ALTHOUGH THERE WAS A DECLINE IN THE PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS SCORING FOUR FOR BELLFLOWER IN COMPARISON TO THE 22-23 SCHOOL YEAR IT IS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER WE HAD HIGHER RECLASSIFICATION LAST YEAR WHICH DECREASED THE AMOUNT OF STUDENTS THAT COULD SCORE AT THE HIGHEST LEVELS. BEFORE BELLFLOWER PROFICIENCY IS IN LINE OR HIGHER THAN SOME SURROUNDING DISTRICTS AND THE COUNTY AND THE STATE. WHEN LOOKING AT SCORES ACROSS THE DISTRICT WE SEE THERE WAS A DECLINE IN STUDENTS SCORING AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL AT ALL SITES EXCEPT FOR SOMERSET. THE TREND ON THE SCORES A REFLECTIVE OF CLASSIFICATION RATES. AS MENTIONED PREVIOUSLY DATA IS PULLED AND ANALYZED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR WITH THE NEXT STATE OF ALL DATA REPORTING THE RELEASE OF THE DASHBOARD PROJECTED IN DECEMBER TO BE RELEASED TO THE PUBLIC.

>> THANK YOU, MISS CARTER. ANY QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD? VICE

PRESIDENT STEWART. >> ONE WAS ST MATH AND COMMON ASSESSMENT IMPLEMENT IT? I KNOW THAT WAS A REASON FOR GROWTH, CAN YOU TELL ME AROUND WHAT YEAR?

>> I CAN'T GIVE YOU THE EXACT YEAR BUT ST MATH HAS BEEN IN PLACE FOR PROBABLY AROUND FIVE YEARS AND THE LEVEL OF IMPLEMENTATION IS WHAT HELPED US TO SEE THAT WAS HELPING SCHOOL SITES. WE HAD A SCHOOL SITE THAT IMPLEMENTED IT WITH SOME GOOD FIDELITY AND THEY FOUND SUCCESS.

>> I IMAGINE THEY HAD A TIME FOR THAT ALL THE KIDS ON FOR

CERTAIN AMOUNT OF TIME? >> YESTERDAY TO A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF TIME DURING THE WEEK AND ALSO HAD A TIME WHEN THEY WERE MOTIVATING KIDS AND TALKING WITH THEM ABOUT THEIR

GOALS. >> DID OTHER SITES FOLLOW ALONG

AND FOLLOW THE PLAN? >> ABSOLUTELY. WE SHARED THAT, THE SCHOOL SHARED WHAT THEY DID AND OTHER SCHOOLS STARTED

IMPLEMENTING. >> MY SECOND QUESTION. TO RIVER PARTNER WITH OTHER DISTRICTS TO FIND OUT WHAT THEY'RE DOING? OBVIOUSLY SOME SCORES THAT ARE REALLY HIGH , IS THAT A THING WHERE THEY SAY NO OR HOW DOES THAT WORK?

>> SOMETIMES. WE CAN CALL OTHER DISTRICTS AND I LOOKED INTO COMPTON BECAUSE THAT'S ONE THAT HAS BEEN TALKED ABOUT AND SOME OF THE THINGS THEY TALK ABOUT THAT HELPS THEM, THEY PARTNERED WITH THE COLLEGE THAT BROUGHT TUTORS INTO THE CLASSROOMS AND THAT WAS A BIG HELP. THEY ALSO TALK A LOT ABOUT DATA ANALYSIS AND FREQUENT , FREQUENTLY LOOKING

AT DATA. >> I KNOW WE HAVE STARTED TO PARTNER WITH ABC WITH CAL APPS PROGRAM. WE SHOULD ASK THEM IF WE CAN LOOK AT WHAT THEY'RE DOING. I KNOW THAT HAVE DIFFERENT KIDS BUT THEY'RE DOING GOOD THINGS. ONE MORE CHRISTIAN BUT GO AHEAD AND I WILL COME BACK. I GUESS MY LAST QUESTION IS , IS A TEST SCORES ARE NOT GREAT, WE UNDERSTAND

[01:00:04]

THAT. I GUESS IT'S MORE OF A COMMENT. I DON'T KNOW IF WE HAVE DONE THIS. JUST THROWING IT IS OUT BECAUSE WE ARE COLLABORATING AND TRYING TO GET TEST SCORES UP. I WISH WE WOULD THINK OUT-OF-THE-BOX AND I WROTE DOWN I WISH WE WOULD MAYBE SURVEY TEACHERS OR PARENTS AND STUDENTS AND ASKED THEM WHAT THEY THINK WOULD HELP OR TOWNHALL MEETINGS OR SOME TYPE OF MEETING BECAUSE WE HAVE SO MANY GOOD TEACHERS WITH IDEAS, BUT HOW DO THE IDEAS COME TO LIGHT? I GUESS THE LEADERSHIP MEETINGS THEY COULD, BUT I FEEL LIKE WE NEED ALL HANDS ON DECK TO TRY TO MAKE THESE SCORES BETTER SO I HOPE WE COLLABORATE AS DISTRICT STAFF TO COME UP WITH DIFFERENT WAYS THAT WE HAVEN'T DONE BEFORE OUT-OF-THE-BOX TO IMPROVE THE SCORES. THAT WAS REALLY IT, THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU, REAL QUICK. WHEN WAS THIS TEST TAKEN?

>> LAST YEAR IN MAY. MAYBE MID APRIL.

>> SO THE THINGS WE PUT IN PLACE THIS YEAR WITH THE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT , EVERYTHING RIBBON ABLE TO DO THAT WOULD BE

REFLECTIVE OF THE SCORES? >> WHAT I MENTIONED ARE THINGS WE ARE DOING THIS YEAR. IN RESPONSE TO THAT BECAUSE WE HAVE HAD PRELIMINARY SCORES SINCE AUGUST.

>> THANK YOU. >> A COUPLE QUESTIONS. FIRST OF ALL WHEN THE SITES GET TOGETHER AND FORMULATE THEIR PLAN FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR, DO THEY PICK A SPECIFIC AREA WHERE THEY ARE FOCUSED MORE ? OBVIOUSLY IT WILL NOT FORGET ABOUT THE OTHER SUBJECTS. BUT, ARE THEY FOCUSED MORE ON MAYBE ELA OR FOCUSED IN WRITING OR MATH? IS THERE A PATTERN WITH SCHOOLS?

>> TYPICALLY SCHOOLS ARE FOCUSING ON ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS AND MATH INSTRUCTIONS. WRITING AS PART OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS AND THAT IS SOME OF THE SITES THAT HAVE A FOCUS AREA, BUT MOSTLY READING AND MATH.

>> WHERE I WAS OR WHERE HE AM EMPLOYED, I KNOW THAT , THIS IS JUST A SUGGESTION. WE DID FOCUS FROM GRADES TK INTO SECOND GRADE FOCUSED ON THE READING PORTION SO THE FOUNDATIONAL READING SKILLS. THE WHOLE DISTRICT WENT THROUGH TRAINING.

THEY HAVE IT ON CAMPUS , SO THEIR JOB WAS TO MAKE SURE THEY FOCUSED ON THOSE SKILLS IN THE EARLY STAGES AND THAT WAY THEY GO AHEAD AND CONTINUE FROM THIRD INTO FIFTH GRADE WITH A STRONG FOUNDATION. WE HAVE SPOKEN ABOUT THAT SEVERAL TIMES. I AM WONDERING IF WE CAN LOOK INTO THAT COME ON THE FLIPSIDE THIRD THROUGH FIFTH GRADE WITH , IN THE DISTRICT 3RD THROUGH SIXTH WILL BE FOCUSED ON MATH AND I KNOW A LOT OF FUNDING THAT WAS GIVEN BEFORE OR DURING THE COVID TIME AND I KNOW THEY ARE ENDING WITH THOSE NOW. IT WAS FOCUSED ON THE MATH PORTION. SO MAYBE SOMETHING LIKE THAT COULD BE, I

DON'T KNOW. >> WE HAVE TALKED, YOU ARE RIGHT. AS FAR AS THE, WE DON'T HAVE THOSE IN SCHOOLS BUT WE HAVE TALKED ABOUT WHAT WE'RE LOOKING AT FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND WE REACHED OUT TO A FEW PLACES TO PULL TOGETHER SOME IDEAS FOR READING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND AS I MENTIONED WE ARE LOOKING AT THE POSSIBILITY OF A TIER 1 PLATFORM AND WITH THAT WE WOULD BE LOOKING FOR SOME FEEDBACK ON THAT BECAUSE WE'RE LOOKING TO SEE IF IT WOULD BE SOMETHING ALONG THE LINES OF THE ST MATH PROGRAM SO IT WOULD BE ACROSS THE DISTRICT, SUPPORTING IN THE READING AREA.

>> SO EVERYONE UNDERSTANDS WHAT THAT IS, WOULD YOU DESCRIBE

THAT? >> TIER 1 IS FIRST GOOD INSTRUCTION. ALL STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE TIER 1 , HOWEVER, IF STUDENTS ARE STRUGGLING IN THE CLASSROOM THEY COULD HAVE SOME SMALL GROUP INSTRUCTION OR OTHER SUPPORTS IN THE CLASSROOM BECAUSE TIER 1 IS IN THE CLASSROOM, TIER 2 IS NOT NECESSARILY OUT OF THE CLASSROOM BUT IT'S MORE TARGETED HELP ON TARGETED AREAS WHERE STUDENTS ARE STRUGGLING.

IN THE CLASSROOM OR OUT AND TIER 3 IS EVEN SMALLER AROUND

[01:05:06]

TWO OR THREE OR ONE-ON-ONE SUPPORTS HAPPENING.

>> PERFECT, THANK YOU FOR THE CLARIFICATION AND DEFINITIONS.

WITHIN TIER 1 AND PLANS FOR THE FUTURE, ORISSA LOOKING INTO DI SCHOOLS AND HOW THEY NEED A REVAMP OR SOMETHING THAT HELPS THEIR NEEDS? BECAUSE IT'S NOT THE SAME.

>> ABSOLUTELY. WE HAVE DUAL IMMERSION AND MULTILINGUAL SERVICE COORDINATOR WHO IS WORKING ON THAT. WE ALSO PULLED THE SCORES FOR THE DI STUDENTS BECAUSE WE UP THEM INTO SCHOOL CITY SO WE CAN AGGREGATE ADJUST THOSE STUDENTS OUT SO WE HAVE

LOOKED AT THAT AS WELL. >> CAN WE HAVE A REPORT?

>> I WILL SHARE WITH YOU READING AND MATH.

>> PERFECT. ONE OTHER REQUEST.

>> I'M GOING TO KICK IT OVER AND THEN COME BACK.

>> I JUST HAVE ONE COMMENT AGAIN. EVEN WITH COLLABORATION , LIKE WHEN PEOPLE ARE DOING GOOD THINGS WE WANT TO KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING. WE DO THAT WITHIN OUR OWN DISTRICT? SOME SCORES AS SOME SITES, FOSTER STANDS OUT, THERE REALLY GOOD.

WE DO THAT DURING PLCS OR TAKE A GROUP FROM THAT SCHOOL TO GO TEACH OTHERS? TO DO ANY INTERDISTRICT COLLABORATION WHEN WE SEE GOOD THINGS HAPPENING?

>> WE START WITH PRINCIPLES AND THAT'S WHAT WE DID VISUALIZATIONS. SO WE COULD SEE THE SCHOOL THAT MADE IMPROVEMENT BASED OFF LAST YEAR AND THEY SHARED IDEAS TOGETHER IN A GROUP. WHAT WAS WORKING, WITH THEIR PLANNING FOR IN THE FUTURE. IF WE SEE THOSE BRIGHT SPOTS THAT IS NOT OUTSIDE THE PICTURE THAT WE HAVE A PRINCIPAL WHO SAYS YES I HAVE SOMETHING WORKING THAT THEY COULD SHARE.

>> PERFECT, THANK YOU. >> MS. GARZA BACK TO YOU.

>> INTERESTED TO SEE IF WE CAN GET A REPORT FOLLOWING THESE COHORTS THROUGHOUT ACADEMIC YEARS BECAUSE WE DO SEE ALL OF THE THIRD-GRADE, FOR DIFFERENT YEARS, BUT I'M VERY INTERESTED TO SEE WHAT THE TRENDS ARE AS THEY GO , AS THEY PROGRESS IN LIKE 2019 AND THEN WE SKIPPED TWO YEARS AND THEN 2021 AND

2022. >> I CAN PROVIDE THAT IN THE FRIDAY MEMO. YOU ONLY HAVE A FEW YEARS, THIRD-GRADE LAST THREE YEARS AFTER, FORTHWITH TWO AND FIFTH WILL HAVE ONE YEAR OF DATA AFTER THAT. I CAN ALSO SHOW THIRD-GRADE OVERTIME BUT IT WILL INCLUDE THE COHORT DATA.

>> I KNOW THAT TAKES TIME TO COMPILE THE INFORMATION SO IF IT'S NOT BY THE FRIDAY MEMO THAT'S OKAY. THANK YOU SO MUCH

FOR ANSWERING MY QUESTIONS. >> MORE THAN 12 HOURS SO THAT'S GOOD. I DO HAVE A COUPLE QUESTIONS, BUT OVER TO

MISS ARMSTRONG. >> THANK YOU. I JUST WANT TO KNOW, WE INVEST A LOT OF MONEY INTO THE AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS. HOW ARE AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS HELPING WITH OUR CHILDREN WHO ARE STRUGGLING WITH MATH AND READING?

>> THAT'S A REALLY GOOD QUESTION. AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS HAVE THE LAYERED IN PEACE. WE INCLUDE TRAINING ON ST MATH IN PARTICULAR SO THEY CAN UTILIZE THAT IN THE AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAMS. WE TRY TO EXTEND INTERVENTIONS INTO THE

AFTERSCHOOL TIME. >> WE ALSO INVEST A LOT IN ONLINE TUTORING. ARE THOSE SERVICES BEING USED?

>> THEY ARE BEING USED, PROBABLY NOT AT THE LEVEL WE WOULD LIKE TO SEE BUT THEY HAVE INCREASED EACH YEAR.

>> IS THERE SOME WAY WE CAN PROMOTE USING THESE ONLINE TOOLS? IF WE ARE NOT USING THEM, THEN WE SHOULD NOT BE

PAYING FOR THEM. >> ABSOLUTELY. WE WOULD ANOTHER PUSH FOR SCHOOL SITES AND WE BRING IT INTO COLLABORATIVE SCORING BUT WE CAN DO SOMETHING WITH THAT AND GET IT OUT TO THE

PARENTS AS WELL. >> ONE OTHER QUESTION. ARE WE IMPLANTING STRATEGIES OR PROGRAM FOR EARLY COLLEGE?

>> I'M NOT SURE WHAT YOU MEAN BY STRATEGIES BUT WE HAVE EARLY COLLEGE AT BELLFLOWER HIGH SCHOOL. WE HAVE DUAL ENROLLMENT AT BOTH SCHOOLS. ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT AVID STRATEGIES?

>> WE HAVE AVID, TALKING EARLY COLLEGE THAT SOMETHING ELSE.

LET ME ASK YOU THIS LAST QUESTION. WHAT INTERVENTIONS ARE YOU LOOKING AT THAT WE DON'T ALREADY HAVE OR WE ARE

NOT USING? >> WE ARE LOOKING AT READING

[01:10:01]

INTERVENTION BECAUSE WE DON'T HAVE ONE OF THOSE ACROSS THE ENTIRE DISTRICT AND WE'RE LOOKING AT MATH INTERVENTIONS AND HOW THEY ARE UTILIZED AND LOOKING TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE USED WITH FIDELITY BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT WE HAVE FOUND TO

WORK. >> OKAY THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU MISS ARMSTRONG. A COUPLE QUESTIONS. THESE TESTS START AT THIRD-GRADE. IS THERE ANY TEST TO GET THE BASELINE OF STUDENTS AS THEY COME IN? I KNOW THEY COME IN SUPER YOUNG.

IS THERE A TEST? >> YES AND I WANT TO CLARIFY, CAASPP WENT STARTS IN KINDERGARTEN. OUR ELPAC TEST STARTS FROM THE BEGINNING OF SCHOOLING. ELA MATH WE HAVE OUR BENCHMARK AND THAT IS TAKEN STARTING WITH TK STUDENTS SO THEY HAVE READING AND MATH PINPOINT.

>> I KNOW THAT NWEA, THOSE RESULTS ARE MUCH MORE IMMEDIATE. WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME WE DID THOSE?

>> THEY JUST FINISHED AT THE END OF AND OF SEPTEMBER EARLY

OCTOBER SO THERE LOOKING OUT. >> WHEN WITH THOSE BE? IS IT

TYPICALLY PRETTY QUICK? >> ABSOLUTELY, AS SOON AS THE STUDENTS TAKE THE TEST YOU CAN GET THE SCORES. THE TEACHERS ALREADY HAVE THEM, THE SCHOOL SITE SHOULD BE ANALYZING AND THOSE WERE SOME SCORES WE SHARED. I TALK ABOUT MATH SCORES BEING SHARED, THAT'S WHAT WE PULLED DOWN SPECIFICALLY TO SEND TO SCHOOL SITES.

>> YOU HAVE SEEN THE SCORES. WOULD YOU SAY NEXT YEAR , BECAUSE THEY CORRELATE. WOULD YOU EXPECT NEXT YEAR WE ARE IN

A BETTER POSITION? >> YOU DID PUT ME ON THE SPOT.

AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL YEAR SO WE WANT TO SEE HOW THE SCORES ARE DOING TOWARD THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR.

CORRELATIONS ARE INTERESTING BECAUSE THE GRADE LEVELS THAT HAVE DIFFICULTY ON STATE TEST HAVE DIFFICULTY ON THE NWEA.

THE BENEFIT, ALTHOUGH I CANNOT TELL YOU IF YOU'RE GOING TO BE BETTER. I CANNOT TELL YOU, BUT WE DO HAVE STANDARDS ALIGNING DATA THAT TEACHERS CAN USE TO FILL THOSE GAPS.

>> THANK YOU. HOW CLOSE IS THE NWEA TEST TO THIS ONE? DO WE DO IT CLOSE TOGETHER OR IS IT SPREADOUT?

>> THEY ARE AT DIFFERENT TIMES AND DIFFERENT GRADE LEVELS. OUR STATE TEST IS APRIL OR MAY AND OUR MIDYEAR IS JANUARY FOR THE

TESTING YEARS. >> YEAR AFTER YEAR YOU TEND TO

SEE CORRELATION IN THE TREND? >> WE DO.

>> OKAY GOOD, THANK YOU. >> AGAIN TO REFER BACK TO WHAT HE WAS SAYING, OUR NWEA SCORES FROM LAST YEAR, DO THEY CORRELATE WITH SCORES THIS YEAR?

>> SCORES WE LOOK AT ARE CLOSELY RELATED TO THESE. THE FACULTY WE HAVE IS WE DON'T HAVE TESTING GRADES TAKING SPRING ASSESSMENT BECAUSE THEY'RE TAKING THE CAS ASSESSMENT, SO THE SCORES WE ARE LOOKING AT ARE JANUARY SCORES FOR THE MIDYEAR GRADES THAT ARE TESTING.

>> SO WE'RE DOING THEM BASICALLY TWICE A YEAR?

>> WE DO THEM FALL AND WINTER AND IF YOU'RE NOT TESTING YOU

WILL DO THEM THREE TIMES. >> THOSE COME ARE THE COMMUNITY OF OR THINGS KIDS ARE LEARNING IN THE QUARTER IN THAT

PARTICULAR TIME PERIOD. >> IT IS AN ADAPTIVE TEST SO IT'S BASED ON THEIR ABILITIES. THE REPORTS CAN SHOW THAT THEY ARE READY FOR THEIR ON GRADE LEVEL STANDARDS OR SOMETHING

BELOW. >> MY LAST QUESTION IS HOW LONG AS THINK TOGETHER BEEN DOING AFTERSCHOOL INTERVENTION?

>> INC. TOGETHER STARTED LAST YEAR WITH ST MATH.

>> OKAY THANK YOU. >> THANK YOU VICE PRESIDENT.

THINK TOGETHER STARTED LAST YEAR?

>> NOT LAST YEAR, BUT ST MATH WAS I BELIEVE.

>> WITH THOSE PARTNERS BECAUSE THEY OFFER ENRICHMENT TO YOU GO OVER LIKE HEY, THIS IS HOW WE ARE DOING. DO YOU GO OVER THESE

? THESE RESULTS? >> THE RESULT , THE RESULT WE WERE NOT GO OVER WITH THEM, BUT WE WOULD HELP THEM LEARN TO UTILIZE THE SYSTEM AND ENSURE THAT THE KIDS CAN GO THROUGH

THE JOURNEY. AND THE PLATFORM. >> THESE DOING FORM THE CHANGES. I KNOW THEY'RE SUPER EASY TO WORK WITH AND VERY

[01:15:04]

FLEXIBLE. FROM WHAT I HEAR. THINK TOGETHER.

>> ABSOLUTELY, THEY ARE VERY FLEXIBLE AND OPEN TO ALL IDEAS.

>> ANY OTHER QUESTIONS? >> BECAUSE OF THAT I WOULD LOVE TO SEE COLLABORATION WITH THEM TO SAY THIS IS WHAT WE ARE DOING CAN YOU COME UP WITH ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES FOR MATH, READING, LANGUAGE ARTS AND HAVE THEM THINK OF SPECIFIC THINGS THAT MEAN RICH KIDS IN THAT AREA.

>> WE CAN SHARE THAT AND THEY DO HAVE THEIR CURRICULUM. I WILL MAKE SURE WE MAKE THAT HAPPEN.

>> THANK YOU AGAIN FOR THE PRESENTATION MISS CARTER. WE

[10. MAJOR ACTION]

WILL NOW MOVE ON TO MAJOR ACTION. MOVING ON MAJOR ACTION ITEM 10.1 APPROVAL THE BYLAWS FOR THE BELLFLOWER UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT FOUNDATION. GENERAL COUNSEL HAS PREPARED A SET OF BYLAWS FOR APPROVAL . ASKING YOU TO PROVIDE AN

OVERVIEW. >> THANK YOU BOARD PRESIDENT.

OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF MONTHS WE HAVE ENGAGED IN THE PROCESS OF FORMING A FOUNDATION WHICH WOULD BE A GATHER CHARITABLE DONATIONS AND WOULD BE USED TO SUPPLEMENT WHAT THE DISTRICT IS DOING TO ENHANCE EDUCATION OF ITS STUDENTS. THE CORPORATION IS A NONPROFIT PUBLIC THE CORPORATION. EVERY CORPORATION REQUIRES BYLAWS BE ADOPTED. IN THIS CASE SINCE THE BOARD OF EDUCATION IS FORMING THE FOUNDATION, THERE ARE CERTAIN RULES REQUIRED OR CERTAIN PROCEDURES REQUIRED TO TAKE PLACE IN ORDER FOR THE BYLAWS TO BE ADOPTED. THERE WAS A SUBCOMMITTEE FORMED IN ASSISTING IN THE CREATION OF THIS FOUNDATION. ONE OF THE ISSUES THAT CAME UP IN THE SUBCOMMITTEE WAS THE ISSUE OF WHETHER OR NOT THE BOARD WOULD PROVIDE SEED FUNDING FOR THE FOUNDATION TO HELP IT GET OFF THE GROUND. THE REASON THAT IS KIND OF AN ISSUE IS BECAUSE IF ANY FUNDS ARE GIVEN TO THE FOUNDATION, AND THE FOUNDATION IS REQUIRED TO COMPLY WITH BROWN ACT WITH OPEN MEETING REQUIREMENTS, THERE WAS TO CREATE A FOUNDATION THAT ARE MORE AUTONOMOUS AND WOULD NOT REQUIRE THEM TO BE BROWN ACT COMPLAINED HOWEVER THAT IS A DECISION THE BOARD NEEDS TO MAKE, THE BYLAWS DO HAVE CERTAIN PROVISIONS FOR THE BROWN ACT. IF THE BOARD WOULD LIKE TO CONSIDER THE POSSIBILITY , NOT VOTING ON DOING SO OR NOT BUT LEAVING THE OPTION OPEN TO ALLOW FOR THE SEED FUNDING THAN IT WOULD NEED TO BE BROWN ACT COMPLIANT. THE BYLAWS TODAY ALSO NEED TO BE APPROVED BY THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS WHICH THE BOARD OF EDUCATION WILL APPOINT. SO IN THAT SENSE I BELIEVE THE DISCUSSION , I WOULD NEED A LITTLE DIRECTION FROM THE BOARD , IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO LEAVE THE OPTION OPEN FOR THE SEED FUNDING AND IN DOING THAT WE CAN CONTINUE WITH THE APPLICATION PROCESS FOR APPROVAL OR APPOINTMENT OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS FOR THE FOUNDATION AND WHEN THE BOARD IS APPOINTED I WILL ORGANIZE THE FIRST MEETING, TAKE NOTES, THEY WILL APPROVE THE BYLAWS AT WHICH TIME HE COMES BACK FOR FINAL APPROVAL. I GUESS I WOULD LEAVE IT OPEN TO THE BOARD TO DISCUSS WHETHER OR NOT YOU WOULD LIKE TO LEAVE THE OPTION OPEN FOR FUNDING OF THE FOUNDATION .

>> THANK YOU. FIRST OF ALL THANK YOU FOR THE WORK THAT HAS WENT INTO THIS. I KNOW THIS HAS BEEN TALKED ABOUT FOR A LONG TIME AND WE WENT TO VICE PRESIDENT STEWART AND I WENT TO COMMITTEE ON IT . WE HAD A HANDFUL OF MEETINGS. WE HAVE LOOKED OVER THE BYLAWS AND TALKED ABOUT SOME ISSUES. I AM VERY EXCITED ABOUT WHAT IT CAN MEAN FOR THE COMMUNITY. I APPRECIATE VICE PRESIDENT STEWART WITH PARTICIPATION AND EFFORT ALONG THE WAY. THAT SAID IT SOUNDS LIKE THE MAIN ISSUE IS WHETHER OR NOT IT IS IN COMPLETE ALIGNMENT WITH THE BROWN ACT. THAT'S THE BIG DIFFERENCE.

>> YES, YES. >> I HAVE ONE QUESTION REALLY FAST. I KNOW WE ARE PROVING, BUT WE CAN MAKE CHANGES AND

APPROVE THE CHANGES TONIGHT? >> IF YOU MAKE CHANGES TONIGHT I WILL GO BACK TO REDRAFT THOSE CHANGES. IT WILL GO BEFORE THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS FIRST AND THEN COME BACK TO THE BOARD OF EDUCATION. THE BOARD DOES NOT HAVE TO PROVE BYLAWS, THEY CAN RECOMMEND OTHER CHANGES SO IT'S NOT A FINAL VOTE THIS

EVENING ON ANY BYLAW. >> OKAY THANK YOU.

[01:20:02]

>> SO TONIGHT WE CAN GIVE DIRECTION ON CHANGES AND THEN THE BOARD WILL MOVE FORWARD AT THE NEXT MEETING AND REVIEW APPLICATIONS AND APPOINTING . THEN AFTER THAT FOUNDATION, THE INAUGURAL BOARD WILL MEET, THEY SIGNED BYLAWS AND IT COMES

BACK. >> CORRECT AND ONE CAVEAT. YOU WOULD WANT TO HAVE A SPECIAL MEETING TO CONDUCT INTERVIEWS FOR THE POTENTIAL APPOINTEES. CURRENTLY THERE ARE SEVEN MEMBERS ASSIGNED TO THE BOARD AND IF THE BOARD WISHES TO INCREASE TO NINE OR 11 AND THAT'S ON THE BOARD, THAT'S YOUR PREROGATIVE. BUT IF YOU HAVE MORE APPLICANTS THAN CURRENT POSITIONS, A SPECIAL MEETING WOULD BE CALLED TO INTERVIEW EACH APPLICANT AT WHICH POINT THE BOARD WILL DECIDE WHO THEY WOULD LIKE TO POINT AND THE APPOINTMENT CAN TAKE PLACE AT THE NEXT MEETING IN NOVEMBER.

>> GREAT. THAT IS ONE CHANGE I WOULD LIKE TO SEE. WE HAD DISCUSSIONS STARTING WITH 11 AND WE DISCUSSED AT THE LAST COMMITTEE MEETING AND BROUGHT IT TO SEVEN. I HAVE DONE A LOT OF RESEARCH MYSELF AND HAD CONVERSATIONS WITH PEOPLE IN THE FOUNDATION ARENA FOR A LONG TIME AND I WOULD RECOMMEND TO THE BOARD IF THE BOARD WANTS TO MOVE TO THE NINE BOARD MEMBERS?

>> I WOULD SUPPORT THAT. THE NINE.

>> I WOULD ACTUALLY SUPPORT IT AND I WAS VERY SKEPTICAL LIKE HOW ARE WE GOING TO GET ANYBODY TO DO THIS? SO BUT IN TALKING TO PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY, I DO THINK PEOPLE ARE PRETTY EXCITED ABOUT IT. I WOULD BE OPEN TO MOVING IT TO NINE AS

WELL. >> 11 MIGHT BE TOO BIG.

>> BYLAWS CAN BE AMENDED . IF THE BOARD GETS INTO A POSITION , THEY CAN MAKE THAT DECISION DOWN THE ROAD.

>> IT WOULD STILL COME TO THE BOARD FOR APPROVAL. ANY BYLAW AMENDMENT COMES BACK FOR FINAL APPROVAL.

>> SO THAT WAS MY CHANGE. FOR THE SEED MONEY I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT THAT WE SUPPORT THE FOUNDATION TO GET UP AND RUNNING. HONESTLY WITH THE SCOPE OF THE FOUNDATION I DON'T THINK WE NEED THE SEED MONEY, BUT IF IT'S GOING TO HELP WITH THE FORMATION OF THE BYLAWS AND MAKING IT COMPLIANT I WOULD HAVE IT AS A POSSIBILITY IF WE NEED TO

SUPPORT IN THAT WAY. >> YOU'RE NOT COMMITTING TO ANYTHING IN TERMS OF PROVIDING FUNDS. JUST LEAVE THE OPTION OPEN AND IN ORDER TO DO THAT IT HAS TO BE FULLY BROWN ACT

COMPLIANT. >> NOT OPPOSED TO HAVING THAT LANGUAGE AND MAKING IT COMPLIANT. HOW TO MY COLLEAGUES

FEEL ABOUT THAT PORTION? >> I'M WILLING TO DISCUSS AND INTERESTED TO DISCUSS HOW MUCH ARE WE THINKING ABOUT AS FAR AS SEED MONEY GOES IF IT'S IN POSSIBILITIES TO DO THAT WE WANT THEM TO BE SUCCESSFUL AS THEY START THEIR JOURNEY. BUT I AM MORE INTERESTED IN MAKING SURE THEY ARE BROWN ACT COMPLIANT AS WELL SO THAT'S MORE OF MY FOCUS. MAKING SURE THAT IS A TRANSPARENT COMMITTEE WITH THE BOARD GOING FORWARD.

>> TO CLARIFY, THE BOARD DOES NOT NEED TO PROVIDE ANY FUNDING TO MAKE IT BROWN ACT COMPLIANT. THAT IS AN OVERARCHING DECISION THE BOARD CAN MAKE. IF YOU WANT THE FOUNDATION TO BE IN COMPLIANCE WITH THE BROWN ACT AND OPEN TO MEETING REGULATIONS AND LAWS YOU'RE MORE THAN ABLE TO DO SO AT THIS POINT. IS NOT NECESSARILY A FUNDING MECHANISM , IT LEAVES THE OPTION OPEN BUT YOU CAN MAKE IT BROWN A COMPLAINT WITHOUT FUTURE

FUNDING. >> TO SEPARATE THE ISSUES I WANT OPENNESS AND TRANSPARENCY SO ASIDE FROM SEED MONEY I WOULD MOVE FORWARD TO MAKE IT BROWN ACT COMPLIANT LOOKING AT THE DIFFERENCE FOR SEED MONEY WE COULD ENGAGE IN A MOU THERE WAS A SITUATION WHERE WE NEEDED TO SUPPORT THE FOUNDATION IN A WAY YOU CAN DO THAT LATER AFTER THAT MECHANISM RATHER THAN SEED MONEY. SO FOR ME THE NINE MEMBERS MAKING IT BROWN ACT COMPLIANT OUTSIDE OF THAT I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT.

>> YES, YOU MENTIONED THE MOU. HOW WOULD THAT WORK

[01:25:03]

>> BASICALLY LET'S SAY THE FOUNDATION WANTS TO PUT ON AN EVENT FOR EXAMPLE WE'RE TALKING ABOUT THE FOUNDATION HAVING MARQUEE EVENTS LIKE THE HALL OF FAME NIGHT IF THERE IS AN AMOUNT THEY WOULD NEED ASSISTANCE WITH, THE BOARD CAN PROVIDE ASSISTANCE FOR THEM TO SET UP THE EVENT. THEY HOST THE EVENT, BRING IN THE FUNDS WHICH ARE USED FOR PUBLIC BENEFIT FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE EDUCATION OF THE STUDENTS OF THE DISTRICT OF BELLFLOWER. SO IN THAT SENSE YOU DON'T HAVE TO PUT THE MONEY UP FRONT IF ONE YOU'RE DOWN THE ROAD AND WE NEED HELP WITH AN EVENT THE BOARD CAN ENGAGE IN DIALOGUE TO ASSIST IN PUTTING ON THOSE KINDS OF EVENTS WITH THE FOUNDATION.

>> ONCE WE GIVE THEM SUPPORT FINANCIALLY TO PUT ON THIS EVENT, WOULD THIS BOARD OF DIRECTORS PAY BACK THE MONEY

THAT WE LEND THEM? >> THAT WOULD BE WHATEVER IS AGREED-UPON BY THIS BOARD AND THE BOARD OF FOUNDATION. IF YOU WANT THEM TO PAY BACK THAT SOMETHING YOU CAN ADD THAT THEY WOULD PAY IT BACK SO IT'S MORE OF A LOAN. IF IT IS COUNTRIES INTO THE EVENT THE DISTRICT CAN CONTRIBUTE TO EVENTS THAT ARE

PUBLIC BENEFIT. >> IT IS AN OPTION FOR THE BOARD TO GO WAY OF CONTRIBUTION OR A LOAN. OKAY.

>> IF THAT WERE TO HAPPEN I THINK IN TERMS OF MS. STEWART TALKS ABOUT IT A LOT. HAVING A HALL OF FAME EVENT FOR THE DISTRICT, BRINGING ALUMNI, SALIVATING STUDENTS. I GO TO A LOT OF HALL OF FAME EVENTS AT LONG BEACH, THOSE ARE BIG EVENTS IN ORDER TO MAKE MONEY YOU HAVE TO SPEND SO THEY HAVE AN AGREEMENT WHERE THEY ALL SUPPORT AND IT IS A HEALTHY PARTNERSHIP, BUT THE OVERALL GOAL IS BY SUPPORTING THE FOUNDATION IT SUPPORTING THE DISTRICT 10 TIMES MORE. SO REALLY IT'S THE HEALTHY PARTNERSHIP. IMPORTANT TO HAVE THE OPTION TO SUPPORT IN CASE WE NEED IT.

>> IF I MIGHT ADD I'M SURE YOU BEEN TO EVENTS WE'VE SEEN THE PLATINUM SPONSOR OR GOLD SPONSOR WITH ANOTHER MECHANISM BY WHICH THE DISTRICT COULD HELP.

>> MS. STEWART. >> IS GOING TO ADD TO THAT LIKE WHEN THEY NAME BUILDING OR CERTAIN AREAS OR LOCKER ROOMS , THERE ARE SO MANY DIFFERENT WAYS. WE BEEN TALKING ABOUT THIS FOR A LONG TIME SO I'M EXCITED TO SEE IT HAPPEN.

>> I REMEMBER I WENT TO A BOARD MEETING SOME OF YOU MAY REMEMBER, JOSH CHILDRESS WAS MAKING A DONATION. WHAT I TOOK FROM IT WAS THAT IT SEEMS LIKE THERE ARE PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITY WHO HAVE BEEN THROUGH OUR SCHOOLS THAT HAVE DONE WELL TO WANT TO GIVE BACK. I THINK IT'S ABOUT MAKING IT EASIER AND MORE COLLABORATIVE AND ALSO DOING ALUMNI REACH OUT. HAVING RELATIONSHIPS AND REACHING BACK OUT TO PEOPLE I WENT TO SCHOOLS TO BRING THEM AND THAT'S HOW WE BUILD A POSITIVE DISTRICT CULTURE AND THIS IS ONE MECHANISM AND I'M GLAD WE GOT TO THIS POINT SO FAR TO MAKE THIS HAPPEN. IT'S GOING TO TAKE A SOLID BOARD AND THAT'S WHERE I'M EXCITED TO PUT OUT THE WORD AND WE CAN TALK ABOUT HOW WE DO THAT WITH ADVERTISING AND TAKING APPLICATIONS AND FUNNY PEOPLE THAT WILL SUPPORT THE EFFORT AND BE THE INAUGURAL BOARD FOR THE FIRST EVER BELLFLOWER UNIFIED FOUNDATION. ANYWAY, THAT WAS MY SPEECH.

OKAY MS. CARS A. >> I HAVE A LOT OF NOTES. CAN I GIVE IT TO ONE OF THE COMMITTEE MEMBERS? TO PASS IT ON WHENEVER

YOU GUYS GET TOGETHER? >> I THINK WE'RE FINISHED WITH

IT? THIS IS THE DISCUSSION. >> YOU CAN PROVIDE ME THE NOTES

AND IT WILL TAKE THE NOTES. >> PERFECT, THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU, MISS CARS MISS ARMSTRONG.

>> I AM HAPPY TO SEE IT FINALLY GETTING UP OFF THE GROUND ALSO.

MY ONLY THING, TOO, BECAUSE THIS IS IMPORTANT. THEY HAVE TO DO THE FUND-RAISING AND ALL OF THAT STUFF AND THAT'S FINE. A QUESTION, WILL ENTITIES STILL BE ABLE TO DONATE DIRECTLY TO THE DISTRICT IF THEY SO CHOOSE? I BELIEVE .

>> YES THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO. >> TWO TOTALLY SEPARATE THINGS.

[01:30:04]

ONE THING THE DISTRICT DOES NOT DO IS WE CANNOT SOLICIT OR BE

IN THE COMMUNITY. >> BUT, THE ASSOCIATION COULD, THE FOUNDATION COULD. ALL RIGHT.

>> ANY OTHER QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD? I KNOW WE DON'T NEED A MOTION TO APPROVE, I THINK, DID YOU HAVE THE DIRECTION YOU ARE

LOOKING FOR? >> YEAH, I WOULD RECOMMEND TABLING THE ITEM UNTIL AFTER THE FOUNDATION BOARD CONVENES, APPROVES THE BYLAWS AND IT COMES BACK.

>> MOTION TO TABLE I AM 10.1 ? >> SO MOVED.

>> SECOND. >> ROLL CALL PLEASE.

>>

[11. CONSENT AGENDA]

AGENDA. ANY ITEMS TO WITHHOLD FROM THE CONSENT AGENDA THIS

EVENING? >> YES.

>> MS. CARS UP. >> ITEM 11.7 DEPLOYMENT OF CERTIFICATE. AND I BELIEVE THAT'S IT. THE ONLY ONE FOR ME.

>> ALL RIGHT TO HAVE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA AND WITHHOLD ITEM 11 AND WITHHOLD ITEM 11.7 EMPLOYMENT

CERTIFICATED PERSONNEL. >> SO MOVED.

>> TO HAVE A SECOND? >> ROLL CALL.

[11.7 EMPLOYMENT OF CERTIFICATED PERSONNEL: It is proposed that the Board of Education approve and ratify the employment of certificated personnel as presented on the attachment.]

>> I JUST HAD A QUESTION FOR OUR INTERIM SUPERINTENDENT. ON MS. KNOX, CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT HER BACKGROUND, WHERE SHE'S COMING FROM? WHAT IS HER EXPERTISE, HER SKILLS? WHAT MADE HER STAND OUT TO YOU THAT SHE WAS PERFECT

CANDIDATE? >> I'M GOING TO HAVE DR. RYAN SMITH SHARE THAT INFORMATION SINCE HE WENT THROUGH THE

PROCESS WITH THE CANDIDATES. >> THANK YOU.

>> HAPPY TO SHARE A LITTLE BIT MORE INFORMATION ABOUT OUR CANDIDATE FOR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF PERSONAL SERVICES.

DR. KNOX WOULD BE JOINING OUR FAMILY WITH A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF EXPERIENCE IN EDUCATION, INCLUDING EXPERIENCE AS A DIRECTOR OF HUMAN RESOURCES. DR. KNOX EARNED HER DOCTORAL DEGREE IN ORGANIZATIONAL LEADERSHIP FROM PEPPERDINE, HER MASTER'S FROM DOMINGUEZ HILLS. DURING HER ADMINISTRATIVE CAREER SHE SERVED AS A HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL, A MIDDLE SCHOOL PRINCIPAL BEFORE BECOMING THE DIRECTOR AND ADMINISTRATOR OF K-12 CURRICULUM AND INSTRUCTION IN THE COMPTON UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT. SHE WAS PULLED INTO HUMAN RESOURCES. THAT'S ALWAYS BEEN AN AREA OF HER POSITION AND AN AREA OF INTEREST FOR HER, AND SHE SERVED AS THE DIRECTOR OF HUMAN RESOURCES FOR ABOUT A YEAR DURING PROBABLY ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT TIMES TO BE A DIRECTOR OF HUMAN RESOURCES, RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PANDEMIC. AND SO SHE WORKED CLOSELY WITH DR. WHITE, WHO WAS THE ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT THERE AND IS NOW THE ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT FOR LOS ANGELES COUNTY, OVERSEEING HUMAN RESOURCES. THE REASON THAT SHE ONLY SPENT ONE YEAR IN HUMAN RECORPSES COMPTON WAS BECAUSE HER SUPERINTENDENT CREATED AN ENTIRELY NEW DIVISION DEDICATED TO IMPROVING THE -- IMPROVING THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF AFRICAN AMERICAN AND BLACK STUDENTS. SO SHE'S HELD THE POSITION OF DIRECTOR OF BLACK STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT FOR THE LAST THREE YEARS, WHERE SHE HAS WORKED TIRELESSLY TO CLOSE ACHIEVEMENT GAPS AND RAISE TEST SCORES. AND AMONG THE MANY THINGS THAT SHE HAS TO BE PROUD OF WITH HER LEADERSHIP IN THAT PARTICULAR ROLE IS THAT SHE HAS HELPED WITH HER TEAM TO RAISE ACHIEVEMENT WELL BEYOND PREPANDEMIC LEVELS FOR BLACK AND AFRICAN AMERICAN STATES IN COMPTON UNIFIED. WE DID DEEP BACKGROUND ON HER, AND EVERYONE HAS HAD POSITIVE EXPERIENCES AND HAS BEEN PRAISING OF HER LEADERSHIP AND HER QUALITIES AND HER ABILITIES TO WORK COLLABORATIVELY WITH PEOPLE TO SOLVE COMPLEX PROBLEMS. ONE OF THE QUESTIONS THAT BOTH MS.

[01:35:01]

ACEVEDO AND I HAD OF DR. KNOX IN OUR TWO VERY LONG INTERVIEWS WITH HER WAS, WHY DO YOU WANT TO GO BACK TO HUMAN RESOURCES? AND THE REASON THAT SHE IS SO INTERESTED IN GOING BACK TO HUMAN RESOURCES IS SHE FELT LIKE HER SUPERINTENDENT PULLED HER AWAY FROM THE WAY TOO SOON, AND SHE REALLY LOVED IT. AND THIS IS THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY FOR HER TO DO THAT. WE HAD 12 APPEAR PLAY DAUNTS WHEN WE WENT THROUGH THIS PROCESS, 12 WELL QUALIFIED APPLICANTS. WE SELECTED FIVE OF THEM TO COME IN FOR INTERVIEWS. THE INTERVIEWS WERE NOT EASY AT ALL. WE ASKED SOME PRETTY TOUGH SCENARIO-BASED QUESTIONS, AND WE WERE IMPRESSED TREMENDOUS WELL DR. KNOX. WE INVITED HER BACK FOR A FOLLOW-UP WHERE WE SPENT ABOUT AN HOUR TOGETHER WITH HER AND REALLY GOT TO KNOW HER BETTER. AND THE THING THAT WE WERE IMPRESSED WITH WAS HER VAST KNOWLEDGE, HER HE COLLABORATIVE SPIRIT, AND THE FACT THAT WE REALLY SEE HER BEING A GOOD FIT FOR OUR TEAM AND BEING OF SERVICE TO OUR CERTIFICATED STAFF MEMBERS AND BEING A RESOURCE TO EVERYONE IN OUR DISTRICT INCLUDING ADMINISTRATORS AND LEADERSHIP.

>> JUST A QUICK FOLLOW-UP QUESTION. WHAT WHAT HER DUTIES BE AS THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTIONAL PERSONNEL?

>> THANK YOU FOR ASKING THAT. SO ESSENTIAL SHE WILL BE OVERSEEING JUST ABOUT EVERY ASPECT OF CONTINUES THAT RELATES TO HUMAN RESOURCES, FUNCTIONS RELATED TO OUR CERTIFICATED EMPLOYEES. SO THAT WOULD INCLUDE -- AND I'LL JUST LIST A BUNCH OF THINGS AND I'LL PROBABLY LEAVE A LOT OUT, BECAUSE HUMAN RESOURCES, THERE'S A LOT TO IT.

RECRUITMENT OF CANDIDATES, RETENTION OF CANDIDATES, FOLLOWING UP ON THE REQUIRED STATE AND FEDERAL REPORTING RELATED TO HUMAN RESOURCES. SHE'D BE OUR COMPLIANCE OFFICER WHEN IT COMES TO TITLE IX ISSUES, WHEN IT COMES TO CERTAIN TYPES OF EMPLOYEE COMPLAINTS, THOSE TYPES OF THINGS. SHE'D OVERSEE CREDENTIALING. HUMAN RESOURCES IS A BROAD PIECE OF IT. SHED ALSO BE A PERSON THAT WOULD INTERACT QUITE A BIT WITH MYSELF, QUITE A BIT WITH OUR CERTIFICATED ASSOCIATION. SHE'D ALSO ASSIST WITH

NEGOTIATIONS. >> THANK YOU SO MUCH. I JUST WANTED TO GET TO KNOW HER BACKGROUND AND WHO YOU HAVE DECIDED IT WAS PERFECT FIT FOURS. SO THANK YOU FOR

ANSWERING MY QUESTIONS. >> THANK YOU, MRS. GARZA.

>> ANY OTHER QUESTIONS FROM THE BOARD? ALL RIGHT. HEARING NONE, DO I HAVE A MOTION TO APPROVE -- I DIDN'T WRITE IT DOWN --

11.5? >> YOU HAVE THAT MOTION.

>> SECOND. >> ALL RIGHT, MOTION BY MS. ARMSTRONG, SECOND BY VP STEWART. ROLL CALL.

>> MS. ARMSTRONG? >> AYE.

>> GARZA? >> AYE.

>> CRITCHFIELD? >> AYE.

>> CAN I MAKE A QUICK CORRECTION? YOU WERE VOTING IS

ON ITEM 11.7, NOT 11.5. >> CORRECTION. MOTION 11.5.

>> 11.7. >> OH, YEAH, 7, THAT ONE.

>> PLEASE. >> THANK YOU.

>> DO I HAVE A MOTION FOR 11.7? >> YOU HAVE THAT MOTION.

>> SECOND. >> MOTION BY MS. ARMSTRONG,

SECOND BY VP STEWART. >> YOU DON'T NEED ANOTHER VOTE. WE'LL REFLECT THE CORRECTION IN THE MINUTES.

>> IT WAS JUST A PUBLIC CORRECTION. THANK YOU.

[12. BOARD COMMUNICATIONS]

>> THANK YOU. >> NO, THANK YOU. MOVING ON TO BOARD COMMUNICATIONS, WE'LL GO AHEAD AND KICK IT OFF WITH

BOARD MEMBER ARMSTRONG. >> I WELCOME EVERYONE. THANKS SO MUCH FOR COMING OUT AND SPENDING YOUR THURSDAY EVENING WITH US, AND THIS WEEK WAS REALLY BUSY WITH RED RIBBON WEEK ACTIVITIES. I'M A TEACHER MYSELF, SO I DIDN'T GET A CHANCE TO CELEBRATE WITH IT BELLFLOWER AND BELLFLOWER SCHOOL, BUT IN MY DISTRICT, WE DID RED RIBBON WEEK. WE FOCUSED ON KINDNESS. WE HAD A LOT OF KINDNESS ACTIVITIES. WE WERE CHALLENGED TO EXECUTE AN ACT OF CONTAINEDNESS EVERY DAY. SO TO ASSIST IN ACCOMPLISHING THE KINDNESS TASK, WE WERE GIVEN A CALENDAR OF SUGGESTED WAYS TO SHOW ACTS OF KINDNESS TOWARD ONE ANOTHER. SO WE DID THIS EVERY DAY. OKAY, I MISSED A FEW DAYS. BUT, ANYWAY, AN ACT OF KINDNESS CAN START OFF WITH A SIMPLE SMILE TO SOMEONE. ONCE YOU COMMIT TO KIND ACTS, WILL YOU FIND THAT IT'S NOT FOR THE OTHER INDIVIDUAL, IT'S REALLY FOR YOU. SO TAKE TIME TO PONDER THAT IDEA. AND THEN WE ALSO FOCUSED ON DRUGS, SAY NO TO DRUGS. A LOT OF --

[01:40:09]

TRICK-OR-TREAT IS FAST APPROACHING. AND IF YOU'VE BEEN FOLLOWING THE NEWS LATELY YOU'VE BEEN PROBABLY HEARING ABOUT THE FENTANYL CRISIS OR EPIDEMIC IN OUR SOCIETY. THESE TIMES HAVE BECOME MORE TERRIFYING THAN EVER BEFORE. , SO FAMILIES, IF YOU PARTICIPATE IN THESE ACTIVITIES, PLEASE TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS TO CHECK EVERYTHING BEFORE YOU ALLOW ANY ITEMS TO BE INGESTED. I MUST SAY THAT IT IS SAD THAT I HAD -- THAT THIS HAD TO BE COMMUNICATED. THERE ARE MANY HURT INDIVIDUALS IN OUR SOCIETY THAT, FOR SOME REASON, SEEM TO GET ENJOYMENT FROM HURTING OUR MOST VULNERABLE AND PRECIOUS ASSETS, WHICH IS OUR CHILDREN. AND WE ALSO DID THE ANTIBULLYING CAMPAIGN, AND THIS RIGHT HERE IS CRUCIAL. SOME, MAYBE MANY OF US, HAVE BEEN THE VICTIM OF BULLYING ONCE, TWICE, INTERMITTENTLY, OR ON A REGULAR BASIS. BULLYING AND MANY TIMES GO UNCHECKED, LEAVING THE VICTIM HELPLESS AND HOPELESS, WHICH CAN VERY WELL LEAD TO DEPRESSION, ISOLATION, SELF-HARM, HAVING THOUGHTS OF SUICIDE OR EVEN BEING PUNISHED IF THEY TRY TO DEFEND THEMSELVES. ALSO, THE PERPETRATOR AT TIMES GO UNSCATHED, WHICH ONLY EMPOWERS THEM, SO THEY THINK. THEN HERE COMES THE TRAGEDY, THE DISBELIEF, AND NO ONE KNOWS HOW IT COULD HAVE HAPPENED. BUT WE IGNORED SIGNS, IGNORED CRIES OF HELP, BUT NOW IT'S TOO LATE FOR AN INTERVENTION. BUT WAIT. LET'S BE AWARE THAT THE PERPETRATOR THEMSELVES MAY BE A VICTIM. BOTH THE VICTIM AND THE PERPETRATOR MAY BE IN NEED OF SOME SORT OF HELP. SO EVERYONE INVOLVED MOST LIKELY NEED TO BE APPROACHED. SO WE ARE IN A MENTAL HEALTH EPIDEMIC. AND I WANT TO SEE MORE OF WHAT WE AS A DISTRICT CAN DO TO PROVIDE SUPPORT, INTERVENTION, AND RESOURCES TO OUR COMMUNITY. BELLFLOWER, LET'S BE KIND, LET'S SAY NO TO DRUGS, AND LET'S NOT TOLERATE BULLIES.

AND AGAIN, YOU KNOW, HAPPY NATIONAL DISABILITY EMPLOYMENT AWARENESS. I JUST WANTED TO JUST SAY THAT I REMEMBER YEARS AGO WHEN NISSAN WAS IN -- HOUSED IN TORRANCE, BEFORE THEY LEFT FOR TEXAS, TENNESSEE, ONE OF THOSE -- IT WAS TENNESSEE? YEAH. THEY ADD CAFETERIA, OH, MY GOODNESS. THEY ADD CAFETERIA THAT WAS STAFFED BY STUDENTS WHAT HAD DIFFERENT ABILITIES, AND IT WAS ONE OF THE CLEANEST CAFETERIAS YOU COULD GO TO. AND THEY WERE VERY POLITE. THEY WERE TRAINED ON -- YOU KNOW, THEY WOULDN'T JUST SWIPE YOUR FOOD AWAY, BUT THEY WOULD JUST SAY, HEY, ARE YOU FINISHED? THEY WERE REALLY WELL TRAINED.

AND SO IT WAS REALLY IMPORTANT FOR US, STARTING FROM YOUNG, OUR EARLY INTERVENTION TEACHERS, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT THAT CHILD CAN BE ONCE THEY AGE OUT OF OUR SYSTEM. SO IT'S SO IMPORTANT TO JUST TRY TO TAP INTO THE POTENTIAL. I MYSELF AM A SPECIAL -- I TEACH CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL ABILITIES. AND I CAN SEE THEM, LIKE, YOU KNOW WHAT, THIS CHILD MAY VERY WELL BE AN INTERPRETER, YOU KNOW. THIS CHILD HERE CAN RECOGNIZE WHAT MAKE AND MODEL OF A CAR IS DOWN THE STREET, AND THEY LOVE CARS. THEY MAY BEA MECHANIC. SO LET'S KNOW THAT EACH ONE OF OUR CHILDREN, WE JUST NEED TO DO OUR PART IN GIVING THEM THE BEST. AND YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT CAN HAPPEN IN THE END. ALL RIGHT? THAT'S IT. I CAN GO ON AND ON ABOUT MY EXPERIENCES, BUT WE DON'T HAVE ALL NIGHT. THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU, MS. ARMSTRONG. MOVING ON TO MS. CLERK, MAYA

GARZA. >> THANK YOU. GOOD EVENING. I WAS ABLE TO ATTEND THE LAKEWOOD EDUCATION FOUNDATION GOLF TOURNAMENT. I DID NOT DO THE GOLFING, AS I'M HORRIBLE AT IT, BUT MAYBE NEXT YEAR I WILL DEFINITELY TAKE THE RISK AND JUMP ON IN THERE, AS HORRIBLE AS I MAY FEEL. BUT I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEXT YEAR. I ALSO WILL BE ABLE TO ACCOMPANY OUR -- SOME OF OUR STAFF AND OUR PTA TOMORROW ON THE RED

[01:45:01]

RIBBON JUDGING, AND I AM VERY EXCITED FOR THAT BECAUSE THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THAT I'VE EVER BEEN ABLE TO ATTEND THIS.

IT JUST HAPPENS TO BE THAT I HAVE OF THAT TIME TOMORROW. AND THEN I WILL ALSO BE ABLE TO BE AT THE OUTGOING RECEPTION FOR MARISA PEREZ, SO I WILL ALSO BE REPRESENTING BELLFLOWER THERE AS WELL. AND TODAY, I ACTUALLY WAS INVITED SEPARATE, NOT AN INVITATION THROUGH THE DISTRICT, BUT IT WAS AN INVITATION THROUGH METROPOLITAN WATER DISTRICT OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. THEY WERE CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF THE WATER QUALITY LAB, AND I'VE GOT SAY IT WAS SO EXCITING TO BE THERE. I HEARD SOME OF THEIR SPEAKERS, AND ONE OF THEM REALLY RESONATED WITH ME. HE WAS TALKING ABOUT HOW THEIR STAFF WILL BE NEEDING NEW EMPLOYEES, MICROBIOLOGISTS, SCIENTISTS, ENGINEERS, AND I JUST THOUGHT, WHAT A BETTER WAY TO CONNECT, YOU KNOW, WHAT I DO, HERE AS A BOARD MEMBER, AND START SOME CONVERSATIONS WITH AGENCY. AND HOPEFULLY THAT WAY WE CAN GO AHEAD AND MAYBE GUIDE OUR STUDENTS INTO THESE PROFESSIONS, BECAUSE I NEVER WOULD HAVE EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT ENGINEERS BEING NEEDED AT A WATER QUALITY LAB. BUT ABSOLUTELY THAT'S WHAT THEY DO. AND I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO CONNECTING OUR SUPERINTENDENT AND MAYBE SOME OF HER STAFF, SO THAT WAY THEY CAN START THOSE PRELIMINARY CONVERSATIONS AND SEE HOW WE CAN START WORKING ON THAT. THEY DO CURRENTLY HAVE A CONNECTION WITH CAL POLY POMONA, BUT WHAT I WAS SAYING TO THIS DIRECTOR WHO I WAS SPEAKING TO BY THE TIME THEY GET TO UNIVERSITY LEVEL, IT'S TOO LATE. WE CAN'T DO ANYTHING FOR THEM, NOR CAN WE EXPOSE THEM TO THESE TYPES OF CAREERS.

SO IF WE CAN CONNECT THEM EARLIER, THEN IT MAY MAKE THAT CHANGE OR THAT IMPACT IN THE STUDENT. YOU KNOW, GOD KNOWS THAT WE'RE GOING TO NEED A LOT OF INNOVATIVE, MORE FLEXIBLE, ADOPTIVE STUDENTS AND CREATIVE, AS WELL, AS WE GET CLOSER AND CLOSER TO THESE ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES THAT ARE HAPPENING NOW, AND THIS PROBABLY WILL BE AN AVENUE FOR WHAT SOME OF OUR STUDENTS IN THE FUTURE. THANK YOU.

>> THANK YOU, MS. GARZA. VICE PRESIDENT STEWART.

>> GOOD EVENING. ON FRIDAY I ATTENDED THE MAYFAIR FOOTBALL GAME FOR HOMECOMING. MAYFAIR ONE 42-21, WHICH IS AMAZING. I WANT TO SAY CONGRATS TO ASIA LEE FOR BEING CROWNED HOMECOMING QUEEN. I'M GLAD WE'RE ESTABLISHING BY LAWS. I AM SO EXCITED TO GET THIS STARTED FOR OUR STUDENTS. I HAVE SPOKEN ABOUT THIS FOR A LONG TIME, WE HAVE, AND SO I REALLY BELIEVE IT'S IMPORTANT TO HONOR OUR PAST ALUMNI AND STUDENTS THAT PAVE THE WAY. SO I HOPE WITH THIS FOUNDATION WE KIND OF ALREADY TALKED ABOUT IT THAT WE CAN SAINT WHOLE THEME DINNER. WHEN I FIRST CAME ONBOARD I WAS ASKED THIS BY ONE OF MY FRIENDS, KEY WILLIAMS. SHE'S AN ALL-AMERICAN VOLLEYBALL PLAYER AT HAWAII. SHE'S LIKE, WHY DON'T WE HAVE THE HALL OF FAME? AND I'M LIKE, WE ACTUALLY DO. SHE'S PROBABLY SOMEONE THAT SHOULD GO IN. I'M EXCITED THAT WE'RE GOING TO BE TALKING ABOUT. THIS I THINK IT CAN CREATE A LOT OF POSITIVE THINGS FOR OUR STUDENT-ATHLETES, FOR MEMBERS OF OUR MUSIC DEPARTMENT, OTHER CLUBS, AS WELL AS GIVING ASSISTANCE. I THINK THIS FOUNDATION IS GOING TO BE A GREAT THING. I'M GLAD WE'RE WORKING ON THIS TOGETHER. ON MONDAY I ATTENDED THE LAXTA MEETING, THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY SCHOOL TRUSTEE ASSOCIATION. WE HAD TWO PRESENTATIONS. THE FIRST WAS ON A.I. I AM ON THAT COMMITTEE. THEY DISCUSSED HOW IMPORTANT THIS IS FOR DISTRICT TO BE FOCUSED RIGHT NOW ON THIS. WHEN HIRING, THEY TALKED ABOUT THE TWO-THIRDS OF EMPLOYEES WILL NOT HIRE SOMEONE THAT DOESN'T HAVE A.I. SKILLS, SO IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT. IT'S REALLY IMPORTANT FOR US IN A DISTRICT TO DO TWO THINGS. ONE TO FOCUS ON A.I. LITERACY, BEING ABLE TO USE THE TECHNOLOGY, AND SECONDLY TO FOCUS ON A.I. FLUENCY, WHICH IS TO BE ABLE TO CREATE. THEY RECOMMENDED THAT MAYBE A TASK FORCE IS CREATED TO ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS. I'M GOING TO GO THROUGH THESE FIVE QUESTIONS. ONE, HOW DO WE PREPARE OUR DISTRICT, OUR SCHOOLS TO USE AND GOVERN A.I.? WE WOULD DO THAT WORE POLICIES, OUR PRINCIPLES, AND OUR PROCESSES. TWO, WHAT CAP WE DO WITH A.I. THAT ADDS VALUE AND HAS A POSITIVE IMPACT. COULD BE SOMETHING LIKE RESOURCE GUIDES, CLASSROOMS MATERIALS. THREE, WHO CAN WE WORK WITH FORG RESPONSIBLE A.I. SOLUTIONS.

[01:50:03]

WELCOME BACK A DATABASE OF A.I. FACT SHEETS, VENDOR LIST, THINGS OF THAT SORT. FOUR, HOW DO WE ENSURE VENDORS FOLLOW OUR DIRECTIVES. AND HOW DO WE PREPARE? THEY RECOMMEND HAVING AN A.I. RESPONSE PLAN. I HOPE THESE ARE SOME OF THE THINGS WE START TO CONSIDER AS WE START TO IMPLEMENT OUR TECHNOLOGY PLAN. I KNOW LYNN WOOD, THEIR ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT, HE WAS SPEARHEADING THIS AND HE WAS AMAZING. MS. ARMSTRONG WAS THERE. HE MIGHT BE SOMEONE TO LEAVE ON IF WE NEED TO CLAB RATE. WE ALSO RECEIVED AN UPDATE ON THE STATE BOND FROM PATRICK O'DONNELL. HE JUST NOTED THAT SCHOOL FACILITIES, SOME PEOPLE DON'T THINK THEY'RE VERY IMPORTANT, BUT THEY REALLY SET THE TONE FOR THE SCHOOL DAY. IT'S THE FIRST THING THAT YOU SEE WHEN PEOPLE WALK IN. SO THIS IS -- I JUST COULDN'T AGREE MORE, AND SO I HOPE THAT IF WE DO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO IMPROVE OUR SCHOOL FACILITIES TO GET MATCHING FUNDS TO PUT ANOTHER BOND ON THE BALLOT THAT WE DO THAT. AND ALSO, JUST ONE THING, AND I KNOW THAT RENEE YOU KNOW, BUT IF WE DO SIGN UP FOR MATCHING BOND MONEY, HE JUST REMINDED US THAT OUR CBO CAN SEE WHERE WE ARE UNLINE BY CONTACTING THE OFFICE OF PUBLIC SCHOOL INSTRUCTION AND THE SCHOOL FACILITIES PROGRAM. JUST A REMINDER. ON TUESDAY I ATTENDED THE ALLIANCE LEADERSHIP MEETING. WE DISCUSSED SAFETY AND BLOCK SCHEDULES. WE ALWAYS GENERATE GREAT ITEMS. I AGREE WITH THE REPRESENTATIVE. I LOVE THIS FORUM. IT'S REALLY GOOD TO HEAR ABOUT THINGS AND TO BE ABLE TO CLAB RATE. AIM EXCITED TO SEE THAT WE'RE HAVING PHONES INSTALLED IN OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS THAT WE'RE WORKING ON THE BUZZ-IN SYSTEM, AND THAT PARENTS SQUARE SEEMS TO BE A GREAT TECHNOLOGY USE FOR OUR TEACHERS AND STAFF TO BE ABLE TO NOTIFY WHEN NEEDED. I'M REALLY EXCITED TO HEAR ABOUT. A GOOD CONGRATS TO OUR BELLFLOWER HIGH SCHOOL FLAG FOOTBALL TEAM AND COACH MILLER. THEY WON THEIR VERY FIRST CIF GAME. THEY PLAY FRIDAY, I BELIEVE. LASTLY, I JUST WANT TO TAKE ONE SECOND TO THANK OUR TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT, OUR DEPARTMENT ON HOW OUR BOARD MEETINGS ARE ACTUALLY SHOWN. I WATCH A LOT OF BOARD MEETINGS FROM DIFFERENT DISTRICTS, AND I JUST LOVE THAT YOU CAN GO TO ONE PARTICULAR ITEM, SO THAT IF SOMEONE IS NOT HERE, THEY DON'T HAVE TO WATCH THE WHOLE MEETING. NOT TO KNOCK MY DISTRICT, BUT YOU HAVE TO SCROLL WITH THE LITTLE, LIKE, YOUTUBE. YOU HAVE TO GO THROUGH THAT, AND TO BE ABLE TO SAY, OH, I WANT TO THINK ABOUT THAT ONE ITEM AND GO TO THE AND HIT IT, IT'S JUST SO AMAZING. SO IT'S VERY ACCESSIBLE, SO THANK YOU SO MUCH TO OUR TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT. AND AGAIN, GO DODGERS. HAVE A GOOD NIGHT.

>> THANK YOU, VICE PRESIDENT STEWART. A COUPLE OF THINGS. I DO WANT TO SAY, I'M REALLY HAPPY THAT THE ALLIANCE MEETINGS ARE CONTINUING. OUR PARTNERS AROUND THE TABLE, MICHELLE, ANTHONY, DAN, CARRIE, THE CANDID CONVERSATIONS, THOSE MEETINGS LIKE THE ONE WE JUST HAD ARE WHAT I THINK IS SO VALUABLE, TO COME TOGETHER WITH DISTRICT STAFF AND, RYAN, LISA, THANK YOU FOR JUST BEING HONEST AND SAYING, HEY, THESE ARE THE ISSUES, AND LET'S FIGURE THIS OUT TOGETHER. I DON'T KNOW IF THAT WAS HAPPENING BEFORE ME, AND I JUST KNOW I SEE IT NOW, AND I REALLY DO APPRECIATE THOSE CONVERSATIONS, SO THANK YOU. I ALSO -- AND ONE OF THE THINGS WE TALKED ABOUT WAS SECURITY. THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WE'RE GOING TO BE BRINGING BEFORE THE BOARD SOON, SOME OPTIONS, AND AN RFP WILL BE GOING OUT, SO THERE ARE SOME IDEAS IN THAT ALLIANCE MEETING.

IT'S NOT JUST ALL TALK. WE'RE GOING TO BE BRINGING THINGS FORWARD IN THE NEAR FUTURE. FOR THAT I MET WITH LEADERSHIP OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF WEEKS. I REALLY NEED TO WRITE BIGGER WHEN I MAKE THESE NOTES. THE LAKEWOOD EDUCATION FOUNDATION, I DIDN'T GOLF THAT WELL, BUT I DID GOLF BETTER THAN DAN FONG, SO THAT'S GOOD. I DON'T REALLY KNOW. I JUST SAW THE ONE SWING, BUT I'M GUESSING I DID. I AM HAPPY THAT -- AND I APPRECIATE YOU, MS. ACEVEDO, FOR GIVING THE UPDATE ON THE MAYFAIRFIELD.

I'VE GOTTEN E-MAILS AND CONCERNS. I THINK IN THE PAST MAYBE WE WERE -- WE JUMPED AT A TIME LINE THAT MAY NOT HAVE BEEN REASONABLE FROM THE START, AND THAT'S NOBODY UP HERE'S FAULT. BUT I WILL SAY THEY ARE GOING TO HAPPEN, AND I APPRECIATE YOU LAYING THAT OUT TONIGHT, AND I'M VERY EXCITED ABOUT IT, AND I WANT THE COMMUNITY TO KNOW THAT IT IS MOVING FORWARD. NOT AS FAST AS WE WOULD ALL LIKE, BUT IT IS GOING TO HAPPEN, AND IT'S GOING TO BE AMAZING, AND WE'RE ALL GOING TO BE VERY HAPPY WITH IT ONCE IT'S DONE. REALLY

[01:55:04]

LOOKING FORWARD TO WRESTLING SEASON COMING UP. I'LL PROBABLY PULL A MUSCLE JUST WATCHING THEM, BUT I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO GOING TO ALL THOSE MATCHES. RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE, I WENT TO THEIR -- THIS YEAR IT'S FEW GOOD MEN AND WOMEN GALA. THAT'S ALWAYS GREAT. I'LL BE HONEST. IT MAKES ME EVEN MORE EXCITING, AND THOSE EVENTS ARE EVEN MORE INTERESTING KNOWING THAT WE'RE GOING TO HAVE OUR OWN FOUNDATION. I WILL SAY, WHEN IT HAPPENS, AND I'M PUTTING -- IT'S GOING TO HAPPEN WHEN WE HAVE OUR FIRST EVER BURKS SD HALL OF FAME EVENT, JUST KNOW, IT CAME FROM THIS LADY RIGHT HERE. AND, YOU KNOW, HER VISION AND REALLY DRIVING THIS AND THE WORK WE'VE BEEN ABLE TO PUT IN THE COMMITTEE AND SUPPORT OF THE BOARD, I'M REALLY, LIKE, I'M VERY EXCITED ABOUT WHERE THAT'S GOING TO GO. AND -- YEAH, BUT IT IS GOING TO TAKE THE EFFORT OF PEOPLE ON THAT BOARD, SO WHEN THAT GETS OUT, THE APPLICATION TO APPLY, I WOULD RECOMMEND ANYBODY WHO HAS A PASSION FOR OUR DISTRICT THAT WANTS TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN OUR DISTRICT, TO APPLY FOR THAT. WHAT ELSE? OH, WE ALSO WENT TO -- DID YOU ALREADY MENTION THE BAY CENTER? WALKED ON THE BAY CENTER. IT WAS VERY EDUCATIONAL. LEARNED A LOT. AIM ABLE TO TAKE A LOT OF INFORMATION BACK. MS. ACEVEDO AND I HAVE TALKED SIPS THEN, AND I'M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THE CHANGES WE'RE GOING TO MAKE GOING FORWARD. WE'RE GOING INTO THAT COMMITTEE NEXT MONTH. IS IT LIKE FOUR WEEKS

FROM NOW? >> I WANT TO SAY IT'S WITHIN

TWO WEEKS. >> OKAY, WITHIN TWO WEEKS. I WAS BALLPARK. SO THE COMMITTEE ON FUTURE PLANNING -- WE HAVE A LOT OF -- 28. THAT'S WHAT I WAS GOING TO SAY. SO I'M JUST -- I'M HAPPY THAT WE'RE BEING FORWARD THINKING AND BEING STRATEGIC ON HOW WE MOVE THIS DISTRICT FORWARD IN A FISCALLY RESPONSIBLE WAY. I'M SURE THERE'S MORE, BUT WE'RE GOING TO GET OUT OF HERE PRETTY EARLY TONIGHT. SO THAT'S IT FOR

[13. INFORMATION ITEMS ]

THAT. WE'LL NOW MOVE ON TO INFORMATIONAL ITEMS. DOES THE BOARD HAVE ANY QUESTION REGARDING INFORMATIONAL ITEMS?

ALL RIGHT. SEEING NONE -- >> I JUST HAVE A COMMENT. I AM REALLY EXCITED THAT PRESIDENT CRITCHFIELD WILL BE GOING TO THE CONFERENCE IN SAN DIEGO WITH US. THANK YOU, PRESIDENT

CRITCHFIELD. >> JUST MAKE SURE YOU BRING YOUR HEELS. DON'T LET THEM BREAK THIS TAME. WAS A FUNNY VIDEO. SO IF THERE'S NO OBJECTION, THIS MEETING -- AND IF IT'S OKAY WITH EVERYONE HERE, I'D LIKE TO ADJOURN TONIGHT'S MEETING, MY LITTLE BROTHER'S BIRTHDAY, I'D LIKE TO ADJOURN IN HIS MEMORY, JEFF COTED TON, AND THIS MEETING IS ADJOURNED AT 7:56 P.M. UNTIL THE REGULAR
