I LISTENED TO THE PREVIOUS MEETINGS, AND WOULD LIKE TO SAY A FEW THINGS AS A TEACHER IN THE DISTRICT FOR OVER 20 YEARS. OUR SCHOOLS NEED LOVE, AND IT IS MORE LOVE THAN THE DISTRICT BUDGET CAN ALWAYS GIVE OUR CLASSROOMS NEED UPDATING. WE NEED COLLABORATIVE SPACES. OUR SCHOOLS NEED NEW BATHROOMS, PAINT, LANDSCAPING, AND I KNOW ALL OF THAT COSTS MONEY TO PASS A BOND, BUT I DON'T REALLY THINK OUR SCHOOLS CAN AFFORD TO WAIT ANOTHER TWO OR FOUR YEARS. WE ARE COMPETING WITH SCHOOL DISTRICTS WHOSE SCHOOLS LOOK NICER, AND CLASSROOMS ARE UPDATED, AND TO BE HONEST, THE COMMUNITY SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO DECIDE IF THEY WANT TO INVEST IN OUR SCHOOLS.IF THE COMMUNITY DOESN'T WANT TO INVEST THE $222 A YEAR, THEN THEY WILL VOTE NO, BUT IF YOU DON'T GIVE THIS BOND MEASURE A CHANCE, THERE'S NO ALTERNATIVE EXCEPT THE DISTRICT TO PAY FOR THESE THINGS OUT OF ITS OWN BUDGET. INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE FOR US. >> I DO. THANK YOU. GOOD EVENING. MY NAME IS DR. JAMIE JONG, AND I AM INCREDIBLY PROUD TO BE HERE TONIGHT REPRESENTING SOMERSET HIGH SCHOOL AS ITS PRINCIPAL. AUGUST BRINGS WITH IT THE START OF A NEW SCHOOL YEAR , AND EVERY SCHOOL YEAR PROVIDES THE OPPORTUNITY FOR US TO MAKE A FRESH START AS LEADERS, WE EVALUATE WHAT WORKED WELL , AND AREAS THAT COULD BE IMPROVED UPON. WE SET THE INTENTION TO BE BETTER VERSIONS OF OURSELVES FOR THE STUDENTS WE SERVE. OUR STUDENTS, TOO, DAWN NEW HAIRSTYLES, TRY NEW CLASSES AND ACTIVITIES, AND SAID OUT TO PRESENT THEMSELVES AS THE INDIVIDUALS THEY CHOOSE TO BE THIS YEAR. THERE'S A SORT OF MAGIC IN THE BEGINNING OF SOMETHING. THERE'S A SENSE OF OPTIMISM, THAT GOOD THINGS CAN AND WILL HAPPEN BECAUSE A CHANGE HAS TAKEN PLACE. THIS IS ONE OF THE WONDERFUL THINGS ABOUT SOMERSET HIGH SCHOOL.

SOMERSET OFFERS THAT OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS TO HAVE A FRESH START , A DO-OVER WHEN THEY GET OFF TRACK WITH CREDITS. THIS OPPORTUNITY ALLOWS STUDENTS TO GRADUATE EARLY OR RETURN TO THEIR OWN SCHOOLS. DURING THE '23- '24 SCHOOL YEAR, 41 SOMERSET STUDENTS GRADUATED EARLY, AND 13 WHO WORKED HARD AND MADE OF THE CREDITS THEY NEEDED TO GRADUATE ON TIME TRANSFERRED BACK TO BELLFLOWER AND MAYFIELD HIGH SCHOOLS. 7 MORE STUDENTS WILL BE RETURNING NEXT WEEK AFTER CATCHING UP ON CREDIT AT SOMERSET, AND 4 MORE ARE POISED TO TRANSFER BACK IN THE SPRING SEMESTER. BECAUSE OF BELLFLOWER UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICTS ' ALTERNATIVE EDUCATION PROGRAMS AND THE OPPORTUNITIES PROVIDED AT SOMERSET, WE HAVE HAD SEVEN STUDENTS WHO ARE NON-GRADS IN JUNE OF THE '23-'24 SCHOOL YEAR EARN A SOMERSET DIPLOMA THROUGH ADULT REENTRY AND SOMERSET HIGH SCHOOL CLASSES IN THIS PAST MONTH . ALSO, THIS SUMMER, TWO ADULT STUDENTS FROM LOCAL NONPUBLIC SCHOOLS RECEIVED SOMERSET DIPLOMA'S. DR. IVAN BARELA AND MS. MELINDA DAVILA COLLABORATED TO MONITOR PROGRESS AND KEEP THEM MOTIVATED TO FINISH HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA REQUIREMENTS. A PARENT OR ONE OF THE STUDENTS COMMENTED THAT THIS OPPORTUNITY ALTERED HER CHILD'S LIFE FOR THE BETTER. TO THE STAFF MEMBERS WHO SUPPORTED HER CHILD, SHE SAID, QUOTE, TAKE YOU FOR BEING A LISTENING EAR . THANK YOU FOR ALL THE IEP MEETINGS. THANK YOU FOR ALL THE ADVOCACY. THANK YOU FOR HELPING OUR FAMILY . THANKS FOR BEING A CHAMPION. THESE STAFF MEMBERS DID MORE THAN JUST THEIR JOBS. THEY WERE CHANGE AGENTS. BUDDHA TELLS US, EACH MORNING, WE ARE BORN AGAIN. WHAT WE DID TODAY IS WHAT MATTERS MOST. MY GOAL THIS YEAR IS TO KEEP THIS SENTIMENT IN MY MIND EACH MORNING THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, BECAUSE EVERYDAY PROVIDES US THE OPPORTUNITY TO START FRESH WITH THE OPTIMISM OF AUGUST. THE CHOICE WE MAKE EACH DAY IS TO BE THE BEST VERSIONS OF OURSELVES , A CHOICE WE MAKE TO BE THE BEST VERSIONS OF OURSELVES -- CAN HELP RING ABOUT POSITIVE CHANGES IN THE LIVES OF OUR STUDENTS AND OUR OWN LIVES. TOGETHER, WE CAN BUILD A BETTER FUTURE FOR BELLFLOWER STUDENTS AND THE LARGER COMMUNITY WE SERVE. I'M EXCITED TO SEE ALL THE POSITIVE THINGS THAT WILL HAPPEN THIS SCHOOL YEAR. FLOWER TEACHERS HAVE BEEN PARTICIPATING IN THE BUSD CITADEL UP AS I HAVE ATTENDED THE LAST FOUR DAYS, FOR THE MOST PART , ENJOYED THE EXPERIENCE. WE HAVE ROOM TO GROW, BUT OVERALL, TEACHERS FEEL VALUED AND ARE HAPPY TO FINALLY GET MUCH-NEEDED PD THAT WASN'T AFTER SCHOOL. WE HAVE WAITED FOR YEARS TO GET NEW SONIC TRAINING, AND IT WAS REALLY GREAT. I HOPE THE SURVEY REFLECTED THE POSITIVITY I HAVE SEEN AND DISCUSSED WITH -- FROM THE TEACHERS -- WITH THE MEMBERS. OUR PTA BOARD SPENT TWO WEEKS AT OUR UNION OFFICE PLANNING FOR THE SCHOOL YEAR .

WE SET THREE GOALS FOR THE YEAR TO INCLUDE INCREASED MEMBER ENGAGEMENT AND PARTICIPATION, INCREASED CTA STAFF-LED TRAINING, AND CREATING A CONCISE CALENDAR AND BUDGET FOR THE YEAR.MY TEAM IS EXCITED FOR THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR , AND WE

ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO BUILDING A CULTURE OF COLLABORATION.

NEXT WEEK, WE LOOK FORWARD TO MEETING OUR NEWLY HIRED TEACHERS. ANNA HAS BEEN SENDING UPDATES, AND AS OF TODAY, I HAVE 16 NEW TEACHERS WE WILL MEET MONDAY. WANTED TO SHARE A COUPLE OF THINGS THAT HAVE COME TO MY MIND OVER THE PAST COUPLE OF DAYS I FEEL THAT BUSD IS MOVING THE RIGHT DIRECTION.

LAST FOUR DAYS HAVE BROUGHT TOGETHER EDUCATORS WHO ARE EXCITED TO LEARN NEW THINGS AND REFINE WHAT THEY MIGHT HAVE ALREADY NOT. WE HAVE HAD A CHANCE TO BUILD THE BELLFLOWER FAMILY MANY OF US HAVE BEEN MISSING , AND LIKE I MENTIONED EARLIER, TEACHERS ARE FEELING VALUED AND LISTENED TO, AND I HOPE THAT CONTINUES. THERE'S NO PERFECT DISTRICT, AND WE ALWAYS HAVE ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT, BUT I FEEL THAT IF WE CONTINUE TO INVEST IN THE PEOPLE AND STRUCTURES, WE ARE MOVING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. HE RECENTLY SENT DELEGATES TO THE 2024 STATE CONFERENCE WITH DELEGATES FROM NEIGHBORING SCHOOL DISTRICTS TO COLLABORATE ON ISSUES THAT AFFECT ALL OF US IN PUBLIC EDUCATION. WANTING WE ADVOCATED FOR WAS FOR CSEA TO CHANGE THE ENROLLMENT BASED ON ATTENDANCE INSTEAD. ALSO, CLASSES WITH SPECIFIC SUBJECTS, SUCH AS HOW TO UNDERSTAND THE INTERACTION AND HOW HE SCHOOL DISTRICT BUDGET WORKS. CHANGING SUBJECTS, I WANT TO RECOGNIZE, MANY CLASSIFIED SCHOOL EMPLOYEES WORK ALL YEAR LONG, INCLUDING DURING THE SUMMER BREAK, GETTING SCHOOLS AND OFFICES AND CAMPUSES READY FOR THE COMING YEAR. IT IS HARD TO PUT A NUMBER ON HOW MUCH IT MATTERS TO HAVE OUR STAFF FEEL LIKE THEY BELONG , BUT WHEN IT COMES TO PAYING FOR SOMETHING LIKE A BREAKFAST, TO ME, IT IS A NO-BRAINER. THE IDEA TO BRING IT BACK CAME FROM LISA AZEVEDO, AND WHEN SHE BROUGHT IT UP TO ME, IT MADE SO MUCH SENSE, AND I JUST WANT TO SAY, THANK YOU TO YOU AND YOUR STAFF. THANK YOU, DR. SMITH, BONNIE, EVERYBODY, FOR ALL THE WORK THAT GOES INTO THAT. TIKTOK ANYBODY THAT PUTS ON EVENTS. I KNOW IT IS A LOT THAT GOES ON TO IT.
