MY NAME IS ANGELA GIVAN. I AM A CURRENT PTA MEMBER AND PARENT VOLUNTEER. ON BEHALF OF BELLFLOWER COUNCIL PTA, I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE BUSC SCHOOL BOARD FOR ADOPTING THE RESOLUTION FOR DRUG FREE SCHOOLS ON PREVENTION AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS IN OUR DISTRICT.

THIS RESOLUTION RECOGNIZES THE NATIONAL 2023 RED RIBBON WEEK THEME AND OUR LOCAL BUSC CELEBRATION.

THE RED RIBBON WEEK THEME IS BEHIND TO YOUR MIND AND LIVE DRUG FREE AND WILL BE CELEBRATED OCTOBER 23RD, THROUGH 21ST. THEY ARE BUSY CREATING RED RIBBONS, SIGNS, POSTERS, PLEDGES AND DISPLAYS FOR LIVING DRUG FREE. THEY ARE SPONSORING SPECIAL ASSEMBLIES AND BRINGING IN SPEAKERS AND ENGAGING STUDENT ACTIVITIES ON CAMPUS LIKE DRESS UP DAYS, CRAZY HAIR DAYS,ETT -- ET CETERA. IT ACKNOWLEDGES OUR COMMITMENT TO PROMOTING HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CHOICES WITH POSITIVE LIFE-LONG CONSCIOUS DECISIONS TO ELIMINATE ALCOHOL, TOBACCO AND OTHER DRUGS WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY.

IT LEADS TO BETTER HOMES AND SCHOOLS.

THEY WOULD LIKE TO ENCOURAGE ALL COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS CELEBRATION WITH US.

OCTOBER 23RD, THROUGH THE 31ST WEARING RED EACH DAY AND POSTING A RED RIBBON AT YOUR BUSINESS, OFFICE, HOME AND VEHICLES. WE LOVE TO SEE RED EVERYWHERE IN OUR COMMUNITY AND SUPPORTING BE KIND TO YOUR MIND AND LIVE DRUG FREE. SPREAD GOOD NEWS TO ALL.

THE RED RIBBON WEEK WILL CULMINATE ON OCTOBER 27TH WITH THE DISTINGUISHED COMMUNITY MEMBERS BOARDING A DISTRICT SCHOOL BUS AND OUR FORMER RED RIBBON TROLLEY TO VISIT SCHOOLS AND VIEW RED RIBBON DISPLAYS.

IT IS LESS ABOUT THE LAPTOPS THAN IT IS TO POINTING OUT THE FACT THAT MORE RESOURCES SUCH AS AN ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL ARE NEEDED. THE PRINCIPALS ARE STRETCHED TOO THIN. PEOPLE POWER IS A PROBLEM.

ANOTHER CASE IN POINT IS OUR CASEWORKER HAS DONE HER BEST AT CONTACTING THE DISTRICT MULTIPLE TIMES.

DR. DRATI SAYS INCOMING STUDENTS FROM WASHINGTON, THEY WERE PROVIDED UNIFORMS. SHE WORKS PART-TIME AND SHE IS TRYING. WHETHER IT BE MORE HOURS FOR HER OR ANOTHER CASEWORKER, IT WOULD BE REALLY NEEDED.

IF SOMETHING IS SAID, IT IS POTENTIALLY NOT JUST TO QUIET THE FAMILIES AND TO ASSUME THAT THE SCHOOL WILL CLEAN UP AND TAKE CARE OF EVERYTHING YOU PROMISED.

SHE IS WORKING TIRELESSLY AND ON PART-TIME HOURS.

THE NEED FOR SWEATER AND JACKETS NOW IS HERE FOR THE COLDER MORNINGS. AT WASHINGTON WE WERE ABLE TO USE JACKETS AND SWEATERS OF ANY COLOR.

DR. DRATI FIRST SAID THAT UNIFORMS WOULD BE PROVIDED.

YOU DID NOT ORIGINALLY SAY FOR THOSE IN DIRE NEED.

LATER YOU DID CHANGE YOUR VERBIAGE TO DIRE NEED.

IT IS NOT IDEAL AND EXCELLENT. YOU PROMISED EXCELLENT TEACHER AND EDUCATION AT AISLE C. DO NOT ADD MORE STUDENTS WHEN IT IS 25 AND 26 OF A CLASS SIZE AND EVEN FOR UPPER GRADES.

THE 4TH GRADE CLASSES AT 31 AND 32.

INVEST WHERE IT MATTERS, MORE TEACHERS FOR NEXT YEAR TO MAKE CLASSES NOT ONLY MANAGEABLE, BUT EXCELLENT.

THEY INVESTED IN TEACHERS AND 6TH GRADE CLASS IS ONE EXAMPLE WITH 18 STUDENTS. IT ALLOWS FOR GROUPS AND INDIVIDUAL ATTENTION AND SO MUCH MORE ROOM FOR EXCELLENCE.

WE KNOW THE STUDIES AND THE ARTICLES ARE OUT THERE.

IT WILL NOT ALLOW TEST SCORES TO GO UP.

TEACHERS MATTER. WHY ARE YOU MAKING THIS MORE DIFFICULT FOR THE TEACHERS AND NOT TO MENTION THE ACADEMIC AND SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING OF THE STUDENTS.

IT IS NOT JUST ABOUT TEST SCORES.

TO DEPLETE THEIR SOIL. AS THE CROPS BEGIN TO GROW, FARMERS CONTINUE TO NURTURE AND CARE FOR THEM.

IN A SIMILAR MANNER WHEN STUDENTS ARE READY TO MOVE TO THE NEXT LEVEL OF THEIR EDUCATION, WE MUST HELP THEM TO TRANSITION SMOOTHLY, CELEBRATING AND ACKNOWLEDGING THEM FOR THEIR SUCCESSES AND OFFERING GUIDANCE AS THEY FACE NEW CHALLENGES. WE CAN HELP THEM TO THRIVE.

THE TEACHERS GUIDE THE STUDENTS TO SAVOR EACH PAGE AND REFLECT ON WHAT HAS BEEN LEARNED AND APPLY IT TO THEMSELVES.

LEARNING IS A LIFE LONG JOURNEY AND IT DOESN'T STOP AFTER A FORMAL EDUCATION. STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO SEEK NEW KNOWLEDGE CHALLENGING THEMSELVES AND PURSUING INDIVIDUAL PASSIONS. WE STARTED OFF HOMECOMING WEEK WITH THE THEME INTO THE UNIVERSE. WE HAD SPIRIT DRESS UP DAYS AND LUNCHTIME EVENTS AND GLOW IN THE DARK RALLY WHICH MANY OF OUR STUDENTS LOVED AND ENJOYED PARTICIPATING IN.

FOLLOWING OUR RALLY WE HAD OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL DANCE AND WE HAD OUR HOMECOMING FOOTBALL GAME AGAINST FIRE FALL.

DURING OUR HALF TIME SHOW OUR SENIOR HOMECOMING COURT WALKED DOWN THE FIELD AND THE 2023 HOMECOMING QUEEN, MADISON PACHECO, WAS CROWNED. OUR HOMECOMING LANCE THIS PREVIOUS SATURDAY FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND WE CROWNED OUR KING, PAUL PAPALACIOS. ON THE SAME DAY AS OUR HOMECOMING NIGHT WE CELEBRATED SENIOR NIGHT FOR OUR CHEER TEAM, FOOTBALL TEAM AND BUCCANEER BRIGADE.

IN ADDITION WE HAD OUR TAILGATE AND PASSED OUT DRINKS AND PIZZA AND CHIPS AND A T-SHIRT FOR EVERYONE WHO PURCHASED A

TICKET. DURING THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER WE HIGHLIGHTED SUICIDE PREVENTION.

OUR AMAZING COUNSELORS PROVIDED RESOURCES, SUPPORT AND FREE MERCHANDISE. MANY OF OUR TEACHERS AND STAFF DRESSED UP FOR ATTENDANCE AWARENESS IN THE PAST MONTH WITH THE THEME "SHINE A LIGHT ON ATTENDANCE" AND NOW I WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE THE UPCOMING EVENTS.

THIS WEEK WE HAVE BEEN HOST HOSTING -- HOSTING OUR COLLEGE AWARENESS WEEK WITH TREUF -- TRIVIA AND CARNIVAL GAMES.

ONE OF MY FAVORITE UPCOMING EVENTS, ON OCTOBER 26TH WE HAVE THE FALL FEST. WE OPEN IT UP TO NOT ONLY BELLFLOWER STUDENTS AND FAMILY, BUT THE COMMUNITY.

WE ARE OFFERING AN EXTENSION TO THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS AND POSSIBLY JOIN US FOR A TRUNK OR TREAT EXPERIENCE.

WE ARE ENCOURAGING STUDENTS TO STAY DRUG FREE BY DECORATING OUR CAMPUSES AND OUR CLASSROOM DOORS AND HOSTING LUNCH EVENTS AND SPIRIT DAYS. BOTH STUDENT AND TEACHER GROUPS CAN EARN POINTS FOR THEIR TEAMS BY PARTICIPATING IN SCHOOL ACTIVITIES.

EACH FACULTY TEAM IS PAIRED WITH THREE STUDENT TEAMS. ANY POINT THAT THE FACULTY TEAM EARNS WILL BE ADDED TO THEIR SPIRIT POINTS. FOR EXAMPLE, THE MAROON TEAM EARNS 90 POINTS, THE DOLPHINS, LIONS AND BEARS WILL ALSO EARN 90 POINTS ALONG WITH THE POINTS THE STUDENTS EARNED THEMSELVES.

I HAVE AN AMAZING IEP TEAM AND I THINK WE HAVE A SECOND ONE COMING UP. A LOT OF PEOPLE AT THAT TABLE.

IT WAS ILLUMINATING HOW MUCH WORK GOES INTO THAT.

RED RIBBON WEEK IS KNOWLEDGE IN THIS MONTH AND WE WANTED TO PROVIDE AN UPDATE OF THIS TOPIC. I AM JOINED THIS EVENING BY MSM ADMINISTER GUIDANCE AND BRITNEY GASPAR, ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL OF BELLFLOWER MIDDLE. AND THE COUNSELOR FROM THE MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL. THINK TOGETHER AND YMCA HAVE BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL CARE AND ENRICHMENT AND WORKSHOPS AS WELL. THE MOST RECENT PARENT WORKSHOP WAS MENTAL HEALTH AND SUICIDE PREVENTION.

THE CORE FEATURES WERE THE FACTS AND THE MYTHS ABOUT SO -- SUICIDE. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE WARNING SIGNS AND THE RISK FACTORS AND WHO IS THE HIGHEST AT-RISK AND WHY. INTER QUEST DETECTION K9'S IS A DRUG PREVENTION PROGRAM.

THE K9'S ARE TRAINED TO DETECT SUBSTANCES SUCH AS DRUGS, ALCOHOL, GUN POWDER, IMMEDIATE TKAEUGSS.

SUBSTANCE THAT'S POSE A CONCERN TO A STUDENT POP LAYING -- POPULATION. THE GOAL IS TO HAVE A POSITIVE PRESENCE AND HAVE EVERYBODY FEEL SAFE ON CAMPUS.

IN DOING THIS, WE DO HAVE RANDOM INSPECTIONS AND WE FIRST INTRODUCED THE PROGRAM BY HAVING ASSEMBLIES IN THE BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. WE HAD A MEMBER FROM THE PROGRAM AND THE K-9 COME OUT AND SPEAK TO THE STUDENTS.

WE SENT HOME LETTERS TO THE COMMUNITY SO EVERYONE WAS AWARE OF WHAT WAS HAPPENING. TO GIVE SOME DATA THE FIRST THREE VISITS, WE THE -- WE HAD THREE ALERTS ON THE FIRST AND FIVE ON THE SECOND AND FIVE ON THE THIRD VISITS.

WE HAVE HAD TWO OTHERS SINCE THEN THAT ARE NOT ON THE PRY STATION. AND SINCE THEN WE HAVE HAD THREE ALERTS. AS THE TIME GOES ON THERE ARE LESS ALERTS. LAS FLORES.

AND I KNOW MAYFAIR HAS HAD TWO VISITS SINCE THE DATA.

THIS IS THE FIRST YEAR WITH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PROGRAM.

WE HAVE RECEIVED POSITIVE FEEDBACK FROM STUDENTS AND THE DATA. WE HEARD FROM STUDENTS THAT THEY FEEL SAFER ON CAMPUS AND CAN USE THE BATHROOM WITHOUT IT BEING SMOKED IN. AND WE HEARD STUDENTS SAY
