WHILE THE MEETING OF THE GOVERNING BOARD ARE NOT PUBLIC MEETINGS THEY ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.
INDIVIDUAL SPEAKERS WILL BE ALLOWED THREE MINUTES TO ADDRESS THE BOARD ON EACH AGENDA OR NON-AGENDA ITEM.
THEY WILL LIMIT THE TIME ON EACH ITEM TO 21 MINUTES AT PER BOARD BY LAW. CAN WE PLEASE HAVE ANGELA GIVAN COME FORWARD? I'M SORRY.
CAN YOU STATE YOUR NAME -- JUST SO I CAN PROU NOUNS --
PRONOUNCE IT CORRECTLY. >> ANGELA GIVAN.
>> GOOD EVENING, PRESIDENT GARZA AND BOARD MEMBERS AND SUPERINTENDENT DRATI AND PRINCIPAL AND SCHOOL STAFF, PARENTS, PTA MEMBERS AND FRIENDS.
MY NAME IS ANGELA GIVAN. I AM A CURRENT PTA MEMBER AND PARENT VOLUNTEER. ON BEHALF OF BELLFLOWER COUNCIL PTA, I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE BUSC SCHOOL BOARD FOR ADOPTING THE RESOLUTION FOR DRUG FREE SCHOOLS ON PREVENTION AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS IN OUR DISTRICT.
THIS RESOLUTION RECOGNIZES THE NATIONAL 2023 RED RIBBON WEEK THEME AND OUR LOCAL BUSC CELEBRATION.
THE RED RIBBON WEEK THEME IS BEHIND TO YOUR MIND AND LIVE DRUG FREE AND WILL BE CELEBRATED OCTOBER 23RD, THROUGH 21ST. THEY ARE BUSY CREATING RED RIBBONS, SIGNS, POSTERS, PLEDGES AND DISPLAYS FOR LIVING DRUG FREE. THEY ARE SPONSORING SPECIAL ASSEMBLIES AND BRINGING IN SPEAKERS AND ENGAGING STUDENT ACTIVITIES ON CAMPUS LIKE DRESS UP DAYS, CRAZY HAIR DAYS,ETT -- ET CETERA. IT ACKNOWLEDGES OUR COMMITMENT TO PROMOTING HEALTHY LIFESTYLE CHOICES WITH POSITIVE LIFE-LONG CONSCIOUS DECISIONS TO ELIMINATE ALCOHOL, TOBACCO AND OTHER DRUGS WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY.
IT LEADS TO BETTER HOMES AND SCHOOLS.
THEY WOULD LIKE TO ENCOURAGE ALL COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS CELEBRATION WITH US.

OUR GOAL IS 100% PARENT AND FAMILY PARTICIPATION AT OUR SCHOOLS. VISIT OUR WEBSITE FOR MORE INFORMATION. AGAIN, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT AS WE CONTINUE IN PARTNERSHIP WITH YOU TO SERVE
[00:05:01]
THE COMMUNITIES. >> CAN WE HAVE TKREB BRA --
DEBORAH BAEZ. >> THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND ATTENTION. I AM BACK AND REITERATING SOME POINTS FROM THE LAST MEETING. THANK YOU FOR THE COUNSELOR POSITION AT AISLE C THAT IS BEING WORKED ON CURRENTLY.
WE STILL DO NOT HAVE LAPTOPS AT HOME.
IT IS LESS ABOUT THE LAPTOPS THAN IT IS TO POINTING OUT THE FACT THAT MORE RESOURCES SUCH AS AN ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL ARE NEEDED. THE PRINCIPALS ARE STRETCHED TOO THIN. PEOPLE POWER IS A PROBLEM.
ANOTHER CASE IN POINT IS OUR CASEWORKER HAS DONE HER BEST AT CONTACTING THE DISTRICT MULTIPLE TIMES.
AND SHE HAS NOT RECEIVED ANY RESPONSE.
DR. DRATI SAYS INCOMING STUDENTS FROM WASHINGTON, THEY WERE PROVIDED UNIFORMS. SHE WORKS PART-TIME AND SHE IS TRYING. WHETHER IT BE MORE HOURS FOR HER OR ANOTHER CASEWORKER, IT WOULD BE REALLY NEEDED.
IF SOMETHING IS SAID, IT IS POTENTIALLY NOT JUST TO QUIET THE FAMILIES AND TO ASSUME THAT THE SCHOOL WILL CLEAN UP AND TAKE CARE OF EVERYTHING YOU PROMISED.
SHE IS WORKING TIRELESSLY AND ON PART-TIME HOURS.
THE NEED FOR SWEATER AND JACKETS NOW IS HERE FOR THE COLDER MORNINGS. AT WASHINGTON WE WERE ABLE TO USE JACKETS AND SWEATERS OF ANY COLOR.
DR. DRATI FIRST SAID THAT UNIFORMS WOULD BE PROVIDED.
YOU DID NOT ORIGINALLY SAY FOR THOSE IN DIRE NEED.
LATER YOU DID CHANGE YOUR VERBIAGE TO DIRE NEED.
DO NOT CHANGE YOUR VERBIAGE TO CHANGE WHO IS DESERVING OF LESS EXPENSES. FOR SOMETHING THAT WAS UNEXPECTED LAST MINUTE. IT IS REALLY NOT OKAY TO USE THE WORD DIRE NEED LATER IN THE CONVERSATION.
EITHER WAY THERE ARE FOLKS WHO NEED AND HAVE MULTIPLE KIDS.
DR. DRATI KEEP YOUR WORD ASAP AND CONSIDER THE CHANGING WEATHER. WE ARE A MONTH IN NOW.
CLASS SIZES, LAST MONTH I SAID I WAS OKAY WITH BIGGER CLASS SIZES, BUT AFTER LISTENING THE -- TO THE TEACHER I AM NOT OKAY WITH THE BIGGER CLASS SIZES.
IT IS NOT IDEAL AND EXCELLENT. YOU PROMISED EXCELLENT TEACHER AND EDUCATION AT AISLE C. DO NOT ADD MORE STUDENTS WHEN IT IS 25 AND 26 OF A CLASS SIZE AND EVEN FOR UPPER GRADES.
THE 4TH GRADE CLASSES AT 31 AND 32.
INVEST WHERE IT MATTERS, MORE TEACHERS FOR NEXT YEAR TO MAKE CLASSES NOT ONLY MANAGEABLE, BUT EXCELLENT.
THEY INVESTED IN TEACHERS AND 6TH GRADE CLASS IS ONE EXAMPLE WITH 18 STUDENTS. IT ALLOWS FOR GROUPS AND INDIVIDUAL ATTENTION AND SO MUCH MORE ROOM FOR EXCELLENCE.
WE KNOW THE STUDIES AND THE ARTICLES ARE OUT THERE.
IT WILL NOT ALLOW TEST SCORES TO GO UP.
TEACHERS MATTER. WHY ARE YOU MAKING THIS MORE DIFFICULT FOR THE TEACHERS AND NOT TO MENTION THE ACADEMIC AND SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING OF THE STUDENTS.
IT IS NOT JUST ABOUT TEST SCORES.
MY SON IS NOT IN SCHOOL JUST TO PRODUCE A GOOD TEST SCORE ALTHOUGH HE DOES. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
>> THANK YOU. IF POSSIBLE, WOULD YOU PLEASE ALSO INCLUDE YOUR PHONE NUMBER SO I CAN GIVE YOU A CALL BACK? THANK YOU. LET'S MOVE ON TO AMENDMENTS TO
[5. AMENDMENTS TO THE AGENDA]
THE AGENDA. DO WE HAVE AMENDMENTS TO THISEVENING'S AGENDA? >> YES, WE DO.
I AM REQUESTING -- THERE ARE TWO THINGS I WILL SPEAK TO.
THE FIRST IS I AM REQUESTING THAT WE MOVE THE BELLFLOWER UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT FOUNDATION DISCUSSION ITEM TO NEW BUSINESS. THE RATIONAL IS FOR THE FOLLOWING: ALTHOUGH I AM INTERESTED IN ESTABLISHING A DISTRICT WIDE FOUNDATION FOR MANY REASONS AND MY INTENT WAS TO BRING IT AND DISCUSS IT IN THE SPRING.
HOWEVER, WE DO HAVE A BOARD MEMBER THAT WOULD LIKE TO BRING THIS UP TO START DISCUSSING NOW.
AS PER PROTOCOL, THIS SHOULD COME UNDER NEW BUSINESS AND THE BOARD DECIDES ON WHETHER WE WANT TO DISCUSS IT AT A FUTURE MEETING BECAUSE IT WAS INITIATED BY A BOARD MEMBER.
I AM REQUESTING THAT WE MOVE THIS ITEM TO NEW BUSINESS AND ASK FOR IT AT A LATER TIME. THAT IS ITEM 1.
ITEM 2 IS A GRAMMAR CHANGE OR SPELLING CHANGE.
AND THERE IS A MISSPELLING ON ERROR AGENDA ITEM 15.2.
ON THE SECOND HALF OF PAGE 10 UNDER THE COLUMN.
THE WORD ASSESSMENT IS MISSPELLED AND IT IS MISSING AN S FOR MISSED ASSIGNMENTS AND DO A STUDENT ASSESSMENT.
SO THOSE ARE THE TWO DIFFERENT AMENDMENTS TO THE AGENDA.
[00:10:09]
>> THANK YOU, MR. DRATI. DO HAVE A MOTION TO MOVE THE
[6. PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE]
>> WE MOVE TO THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE.
OUR PRINCIPAL AT ILC WILL LEAD THE FLAG SALUTE.
GOOD EVENING. PLEASE RISE AND FACE THE FLAG.
PUT YOUR RIGHT HAND OVER YOUR HEART.
BEGIN. I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS, ONE NATION , UNDERGOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.
[7. OATH OF OFFICE: NEW STUDENT BOARD MEMBERS]
>> THANK YOU, MS. ALMADA. AT THIS TIME WE WILL INVITE MAYFAIR HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI AND CLASS OF 2023, MS. STELLA LYNCH AND HER FATHER AUSTIN LYNCH TO GIVE THE OATH OF OFFICE TO MS. STELLA LYNCH. PR-B -- [APPLAUSE].
>> CONGRATULATIONS. NEXT I INVITE BELLFLOWER HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI AND CLASS OF 2023, MS. ELIZE DIZON AND HER MOTHER TO COME FORWARD AND ADMINISTER THE CEREMONIAL OATH OF OFFICE TO MS. ELIZE DIZON. [APPLAUSE].
>> CONGRATULATIONS TO BOTH NEW STUDENT BOARD MEMBERS.
WELCOME TO THE BOARD. BOARD, CAN YOU PLEASE JOIN ME DOWN IN FRONT TO TAKE A PICTURE ALONG WITH OUR NEW STUDENT
[00:15:05]
BOARD MEMBERS PLEASE. [APPLAUSE].[APPLAUSE]. >> WE MOVE TO PRESENTATIONS
[8. PRESENTATIONS FROM STUDENTS / STAFF / COMMUNITY]
FROM STAFF AND COMMUNITY. WE WILL HAVE AN INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE AND THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE BULLETIN BOARD.WELCOME BACK, MS. AMADA. >> GOOD EVENING, PRESIDENT GARZA, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, DR. DRATI, CABINET MEMBERS.
I'M MRS. AMADA, PRINCIPAL OF THE INTENSIVE LEARNING CENTER AND IT IS MY PLEASURE TO PRESENT THE INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE. LEARNING IS LIKE A BOUNTIFUL HARVEST. IT REQUIRES PATIENCE, DEDICATION AND HARD WORK. JUST LIKE A FARMER CAREFULLY TENDS TO THEIR CROPS, IT IS IMPORTANT FOR PARENTS AND EDUCATORS TO CULTIVATE OUR LOVE FOR LEARNING AND ALL STUDENTS.
WHEN WE INVEST IN OUR STUDENTS AND CHILDREN IN EDUCATION, WE ARE SO*E -- SEWING THE SEEDS FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE.
SIMILAR TO A FARMER THAT MUST CAREFULLY CHOOSE THE RIGHT SEEDS AND PLANT THEM IN FERTIL SOIL, EDUCATORS MUST PROVIDE A STRONG FOUNDATION IN READING, WRITING AND BATH -- MATH.
AS STUDENTS GROW AND DEVELOP THEY NEED TO BE CHALLENGED WITH NEW IDEAS AND CONCEPTS JUST LIKE A FIELD NEEDS TO BE ROTATED TO NOT DE PHROET THE SOIL.
TO DEPLETE THEIR SOIL. AS THE CROPS BEGIN TO GROW, FARMERS CONTINUE TO NURTURE AND CARE FOR THEM.
[00:20:04]
SAME FOR PARENTS AND EDUCATORS. WE MUST PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH SUPPORT ANDEN -- AND ENCOURAGEMENT.WHEN STUDENTS STRUGGLE IT IS IMPORTANT TO OFFER THEM A HEALTHY HAND AND GUIDE THEM THROUGH CHALLENGES.
IT IS IMPORTANT TO OFFER THEM A HELPING HAND AND GUIDE THEM THROUGH THE CHALLENGES. I SAID THAT ALREADY.
BY PROVIDING A SAFE AND NURTURING ENVIRONMENT WE CAN HELP STUDENTS TO REACH THEIR FULL POTENTIAL.
FINALLY, WHEN THE HARVEST IS READY THE FARMER MUST GENTLY GATHER CROPS AND BRING THEM TO MARKET.
IN A SIMILAR MANNER WHEN STUDENTS ARE READY TO MOVE TO THE NEXT LEVEL OF THEIR EDUCATION, WE MUST HELP THEM TO TRANSITION SMOOTHLY, CELEBRATING AND ACKNOWLEDGING THEM FOR THEIR SUCCESSES AND OFFERING GUIDANCE AS THEY FACE NEW CHALLENGES. WE CAN HELP THEM TO THRIVE.
IN CONCLUSION, JUST AS A FARMER MUST TEND TO THEIR CROP FOR A BOUNTIFUL HARVEST, PARENTS AND EDUCATORS MUST CULTIVATE A LOVE FOR LEARNING IN ALL STUDENTS. THANK YOU.
[APPLAUSE]. >> THANK YOU, MRS. AMADA AND ILC. IT IS TIME FOR OUR STUDENT BOARD REPORTERS. PRESENTING BELLFLOWER HIGH SCHOOL -- REPRESENTING BELLFLOWER HIGH SCHOOL IS TRIE.
>> MRS. GARZA, CAN WE GO BACK TO THE BULLETIN BOARD REAL
>> I'M SORRY. THAT WAS MY FAULT.
I AM PROUD OF OUR BULLETIN BOARD.
WE HAD A GROUP OF TEACHERS AND I WOULD LIKE TO RECOGNIZE AND THANK MY LEADERSHIP TEAM AND CULTURE COMMITTEE AND ESPECIALLY MRS. RIVERA WHO WAS THE LEAD OF THE BULLETIN BOARD AND SHE IS GOING TO GO AHEAD AND PRESENT.
>> GOOD EVENING, PRESIDENT GARZA, CABINET MEMBERS, DR. DRATI AND STAFF. THE POWER OF READING AND LEARNING IS SOMETHING THAT CAN NEVER BE TAKEN AWAY.
IT IS A GIFT THAT CAN BE GIVEN TO ONE'S SELF AND CONTINUES TO ENRICH A LIFE FOR YEARS TO COME.
READING IS NOT JUST ABOUT GAINING KNOWLEDGE, BUT ALSO ABOUT EXPANDING THE IMAGINATION, DISCOVERING NEW PERSPECTIVES AND EXPLORING CULTURES OF THE WORLD AROUND US. AS THEY CULTIVATE THE READING AND LEARNING HABITS THEY INSTILL, IT IS NOT ALWAYS ABOUT HOW MUCH IS READ OR HOW FAST A BOOK CAN BE FINISHED.
WHAT MATTERS MOST IS THE QUALITY OF THE READING EXPERIENCE AND THE DEPTH OF THE EAGLE'S UNDERSTANDING.
THE TEACHERS GUIDE THE STUDENTS TO SAVOR EACH PAGE AND REFLECT ON WHAT HAS BEEN LEARNED AND APPLY IT TO THEMSELVES.
LEARNING IS A LIFE LONG JOURNEY AND IT DOESN'T STOP AFTER A FORMAL EDUCATION. STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO SEEK NEW KNOWLEDGE CHALLENGING THEMSELVES AND PURSUING INDIVIDUAL PASSIONS. WITH EACH NEW BOOK WE READ AND EACH NEW SKILL ACQUIRED, STUDENTS ARE STRONGER AND MORE CONFIDENT. AS MARGARET FULLER ONCE SAID, TODAY A READER, TOMORROW A LEADER.
BUSD, KEEP READING AND LEARNING AND KEEP GROWING.
THE WORLD IS AWAITING FOR EACH OF YOU TO MAKE YOUR MARK AND THE MORE YOU CULTIVATE YOUR MIND, THE BRIGHTER YOUR FUTURE WILL BE. THANK YOU.
>> [APPLAUSE]. >> THANK YOU, MRS. RIVERA.
WE ARE NOW GOING INTO STUDENT BOARD REPORTS.
REPRESENTING BELLFLOWER HIGH SCHOOL IS TRISTA PETERSON.
WELCOME, TRISTA. >> GOOD EVENING, EVERYONE, MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, PRESIDENT GARZA AND HONORED GUESTS.
I AM TRISTA AND A SENIOR AT BELLFLOWER HIGH SCHOOL AND THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING US TO BE HERE TODAY.
NEXT SLIDE, PLEASE. >> I WOULD LIKE TO START OFF WITH OUR PAST EVENTS AT BELLFLOWER.
WE STARTED OFF HOMECOMING WEEK WITH THE THEME INTO THE UNIVERSE. WE HAD SPIRIT DRESS UP DAYS AND LUNCHTIME EVENTS AND GLOW IN THE DARK RALLY WHICH MANY OF OUR STUDENTS LOVED AND ENJOYED PARTICIPATING IN.
FOLLOWING OUR RALLY WE HAD OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL DANCE AND WE HAD OUR HOMECOMING FOOTBALL GAME AGAINST FIRE FALL.
DURING OUR HALF TIME SHOW OUR SENIOR HOMECOMING COURT WALKED DOWN THE FIELD AND THE 2023 HOMECOMING QUEEN, MADISON PACHECO, WAS CROWNED. OUR HOMECOMING LANCE THIS PREVIOUS SATURDAY FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AND WE CROWNED OUR KING, PAUL PAPALACIOS. ON THE SAME DAY AS OUR HOMECOMING NIGHT WE CELEBRATED SENIOR NIGHT FOR OUR CHEER TEAM, FOOTBALL TEAM AND BUCCANEER BRIGADE.
IN ADDITION WE HAD OUR TAILGATE AND PASSED OUT DRINKS AND PIZZA AND CHIPS AND A T-SHIRT FOR EVERYONE WHO PURCHASED A
[00:25:01]
TICKET. DURING THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER WE HIGHLIGHTED SUICIDE PREVENTION.OUR AMAZING COUNSELORS PROVIDED RESOURCES, SUPPORT AND FREE MERCHANDISE. MANY OF OUR TEACHERS AND STAFF DRESSED UP FOR ATTENDANCE AWARENESS IN THE PAST MONTH WITH THE THEME "SHINE A LIGHT ON ATTENDANCE" AND NOW I WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE THE UPCOMING EVENTS.
THIS WEEK WE HAVE BEEN HOST HOSTING -- HOSTING OUR COLLEGE AWARENESS WEEK WITH TREUF -- TRIVIA AND CARNIVAL GAMES.
ONE OF MY FAVORITE UPCOMING EVENTS, ON OCTOBER 26TH WE HAVE THE FALL FEST. WE OPEN IT UP TO NOT ONLY BELLFLOWER STUDENTS AND FAMILY, BUT THE COMMUNITY.
WE ARE OFFERING AN EXTENSION TO THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS AND POSSIBLY JOIN US FOR A TRUNK OR TREAT EXPERIENCE.
WE ARE ENCOURAGING STUDENTS TO STAY DRUG FREE BY DECORATING OUR CAMPUSES AND OUR CLASSROOM DOORS AND HOSTING LUNCH EVENTS AND SPIRIT DAYS. LAST, BUT NOT LEAST, FOR THE UPCOMING EVENTS WE WILL HAVE A MOTIVATIONAL SPEAKER TO SPEAK TO THE 7TH, 9TH GRADE AND 12TH STUDENTS ON SEL LEADERSHIP AND LEAVING A LON -- LONG-LASTING POWERFUL IMPACT ON SCHOOL CULTURE. AND NOW WE HAVE OUR BRAND-NEW STUDENT AND TEACHER SPIRIT TEAMS IN ORDER TO BOOST SCHOOL SPIRIT AND SCHOOL CULTURE. THERE ARE DIFFERENT TEAMS NAMED AFTER ANIMALS AND THEY ARE DIVIDED BY LAST NAMES.
BOTH STUDENT AND TEACHER GROUPS CAN EARN POINTS FOR THEIR TEAMS BY PARTICIPATING IN SCHOOL ACTIVITIES.
EACH FACULTY TEAM IS PAIRED WITH THREE STUDENT TEAMS. ANY POINT THAT THE FACULTY TEAM EARNS WILL BE ADDED TO THEIR SPIRIT POINTS. FOR EXAMPLE, THE MAROON TEAM EARNS 90 POINTS, THE DOLPHINS, LIONS AND BEARS WILL ALSO EARN 90 POINTS ALONG WITH THE POINTS THE STUDENTS EARNED THEMSELVES.
THE WINNING TEAMS WILL EARN A PRIZE FOR PARTICIPATING.
THAT'S THE END. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
[APPLAUSE]. >> THANK YOU, MS. PETERSON.
REPRESENTING BELLFLOWER IS LENNOX SCOTT.
>> GOOD EVENING. I JUST WANTED TO EX -- EXTEND MY THANKS TO -- FOR HAVING ME HERE TO REPRESENT BELLFLOWER.
TO START OFF, I THINK WE CAN ALL AGREE THAT MENTAL HEALTH HAS BEEN A BIG COMPONENT OF THIS GENERATION.
TO ACCOMMODATE THAT MAYFAIR HAS CREATED SUICIDE PREVENTION MONTH. THERE WERE GAMES AT LUNCHTIME AND A PRESENTATION TO SHARE THE MESSAGE THAT IT IS OKAY TO ASK FOR HELP. WE POSTED QR CODES AROUND THE SCHOOL WHERE STUDENTS COULD SCAN THE QR CODE.
ALL THEY HAD TO DO WAS SHARE THE SEVERITY OF ANY ISSUE WAS GOING ON AND IT WOULD HELP THEM DECIDE.
THIS DOES NOT ONLY IMPROVE THE MENTAL, BUT IMPROVES THE CONNECTION BETWEEN STAFF AND STUDENTS AND HELPS US COMPLETE LCAP GOALS NUMBER ONE AND THREE.
>> THE PATHWAY IS FOCUSED ON CONSTRUCTION.
AS ALL OF YOU MAY KNOW, WOOD SHOP IS ONE OF THE ELECTION -- ELECTIVES WE OFFER HERE AT MAYFAIR.
WOOD SHOP IS ONE OF THE ELECTIVES WE OFFER HERE.
WHEN YOU THINK 6 WOOD SHOP YOU MAY THINK OF BUILDING TABLES OR BUILDING BIRDHOUSES. IN MY OPINION, I BELIEVE OUR WOOD SHOP HAS BROKEN THE BOUNDARIES AND STARTED TO BUILD A TINY HOME. I SPOKE WITH THE TEACHER AND THE ADVISOR AND HE SPES PARTICULARLY -- SPECIFICALLY TOLD ME THE LAYOUT OF THE HOME. IT IS A 220-SQUARE FEET AND IT WILL HAVE A BATHROOM, TOILET, SHOWER, SINK, TWO WINDOWS AND OF COURSE A FRONT DOOR. NOW ALL HE HAS TO TELL ME IS THE RENT. IN THIS SLIDE IT TALKS ABOUT STUDENT ENGAGEMENT, BUT OF COURSE A DIFFERENT TYPE.
I WANTED TO COMMEND OUR STAFF AND TEACHERS TO -- FOR PREPARING OUR STUDENTS TO BE COLLEGE AND CAREER READY.
IF YOU LOOK AT THE SLIDE THAT IS A PICTURE OF OUR TEACHERS AND AN EXAMPLE OF HOW THEY LET STUDENTS GET COLLEGE AND CAREER READY WHERE THEY HAD CONVERSATIONS WITH EACHERS EACH TUESDAY. THIS IS WHERE DIFFERENT TEACHER S WITH DIFFERENT BACKGROUNDS AND MAJORS TO
[00:30:01]
CONVERSE WITH THEM TO GET THEM COLLEGE READY.AND THEN TO THE RIGHT WE HAVE OUR COUNSELORS PRESENTING THE A THROUGH G. AUGUST 10TH TO SEPTEMBER 1ST, 19 STUDENTS VISITED THE NEW COLLEGE AND CAREER CENTER. I THINK THAT IS A BIG ACCOMPLISHMENT. THIS SLIDE FOCUSES ON OUR FALL SPORTS AND JUST TO CONGRATULATE THE CIF-BOUND FALL SPORTS WHICH IS VARSITY VOLLEYBALL AND INDIVIDUALS FROM CROSS COUNTRY.
WE HAVE A PICTURE OF THE NEW FLAG FOOTBALL TEAM WHICH IF I BELIEVE THEY ARE UNDEFEATED OR ONLY LOST ONE GAME.
THAT'S A BIG ACCOMPLISHMENT FOR A NEW TEAM, ESSENTIALLY.
AND OUR COACH FOR THE VOLLEYBALL -- SKI ME, FOR THE FOOTBALL TEAM. THE L.A. CHARGERS COACH OF THE WEEK WHICH IS A BIG ACCOMPLISHMENT.
LOOKING BACK WITH THE MILK BUCKET GAME, DID WIN.
CHECK YOUR PORTALS AND CHECK THE STUDENTS GRADES.
THE ATTENDANCE RATE IS JUST TO POINT OUT ANOTHER ACCOMPLISHMENT. ATTENDANCE WAS AT A THREE-YEAR HIGH. LOOKING AHEAD WE HAVE A FALL SPORTS ASSEMBLY. WE HAVE HOMECOMING COMING UP ON OCTOBER 21ST. WE HAVE RED RIBBON WEEK THE 23RD TO THE 27TH. AND THERE IS ANOTHER BIG ACCOMPLISHMENT WHERE OUR BAND INSTRUCTOR, MR. PHILIPS HAS CREATED A JOINT BAND THAT WILL INCLUDE LAKEWOOD, MAY FLOWER AND MANY MORE. JOINING THESE TOGETHER WILL ALLOW THEM TO QUALIFY FOR THE ROSE PARADE OF 2025.
MAKE SURE TO BE THERE. WE STARTED HIS SPAN THEIR HERITAGE MONTH AT MAY -- MAYFAIR TO SPREAD THE CULTURE THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL. FINALLY I WOULD LIKE EVERYONE TO -- I WOULD LIKE TO THANK EVERYONE FOR UH -- UH HROEUING -- ALLOWING ME TO COME AND TELL YOU HOW MAYFAIR HAS
FLOUR WISHED. >> THANK YOU, SCOTT.
REPRESENTING SOMERSET HIGH SCHOOL IS SIERRA RIDGEWAY.
WELCOME SIERRA. >> THANK YOU AND GOOD EVENING PRESIDENT GARZA AND MEMBERS OF THE BOARD AND MEMBERS OF THE CABINET AND THE AUDIENCE. I AM SIERRA AND HERE ARE THE LATEST AND FUTURE EVENTS. WE JUST CONCLUDED OUR FALL BREAK WHICH WAS TWO WEEKS LONG. STUDENTS AND STAFF HAVE RETURNED TO THE CLASSROOM WHERE THEY CAN RESUME THE WORK OF TEACHING AND LEARNING. SPEAKING OF LEARNING, BLOCK 3 BEGAN THIS WEEK. BLOCK 3 STANDS FOR BETTER LEARNING OF CURRICULUM. IT IS ONE OF THE REASONS SOMERSET CONTINUES TO HOLD A DISTINCTION AS A CALIFORNIA MODEL CONTINUATION SCHOOL. OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH. ACCORDING TO THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY, BREAST CANCER IS THE MOST COMMON CANCER WOMEN MAY FACE IN THEIR LIFETIME. IT CAN OCCUR AT ANY AGE, BUT THE RISK GOES UP AS YOU GET OLDER.
THE SUPPORT TO PATIENTS AND SURVIVORS BY WEARING PINK AND DISPLAYING PINK SIGNS, BALLOONS, POSTERS THROUGHOUT CAMPUS. WE STAND WITH THOSE IN THEIR RESOLVE AND FIGHT TO DEFEAT BREAST CANCER.
NEXT MONTH, NOVEMBER 16TH, 2023 IS SOMERSET'S TURKEY DAY.
THIS IS A MAJOR EVENT AND HAS BEEN A TRADITION FOR ALMOST 40 YEARS. ALL THOSE IN ATTENDANCE WILL BE TREATED TO A FULL COURSE TURKEY DINNER AND A DESSERT ALL BE SERVED BY THE WONDERFUL STUDENTS OF SOMERSET.
TURKEY DAY IS AN ANNUAL FUNDRAISER FOR SOPLTER -- SOMERSET AND ALL PROCEEDS GO TO STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS.
THIS CONCLUDES OUR BOARD REPORT FOR THE EVENING.
THANK YOU AND HAVE A WONDERFUL EVENING.
[APPLAUSE]. >> I THANK YOU SO MUCH.
[9. SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT]
WE WILL NOW GO TO SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT, DR. DR ATI, DO YOU HAVE ANYTHING TO REPORT?>> YES, I DO, ACTUALLY. LET ME GET ORGANIZED HERE.
>> I'M SO SORRY, DR. DRATI. OUR STUDENT BOARD REPORTERS, IF
[00:35:05]
YOU HAVE TO GO NOW, YOU ARE -- YOU CAN GO HOME AND FINISH UP SOME HOMEWORK AND GET READY FOR TOMORROW.THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ATTENDING.
GO AHEAD, DR. DRATI. SORRY ABOUT THAT.
>> FIRST I WANT TO THANK THE NEW -- THE STUDENT BOARD MEMBER THAT'S WERE JUST SWORN IN. I HAVE WORKED WITH THEM THE LAST THREE WEEKS, AND I AM SO PROUD OF THEIR DILIGENCE AND TRYING TO PAY ATTENTION TO THE BOARD PROTOCOLS AND ALL THAT.
THEY WILL START GETTING ROTATED IN NEXT WEEK.
TODAY I TOLD THEM TO CALM THEIR NERVES THEY CAN WATCH HOW THINGS FLOW AND FEEL COMFORTABLE AND START TO PROCESS. NEXT YEAR WE ARE ROTATING THEM IN. THEY ARE DOING A GOOD JOB.
I WILL CONTINUE TO MEET WITH THEM TO MAKE SURE THEY UNDERSTAND HOW THINGS WORK. THERE IS A LOT OF INFORMATION TO SHARE SO I WANT TO BE MINDFUL OF THAT AND THEY HAVE OTHER STUDIES IN THE SCHOOL -- SCHOOLWORK AS WELL.
THANK YOU TO THE STUDENT BOARD MEMBERS AND THE PARENTS WHO COME WITH THEM TO SUPPORT THAT. THE DISTRICT HAS RECENTLY COMPLETED A QUARTERLY COMPLAINT SUMMARY SKWRAUL -- JULY THROUGH SEPTEMBER AS REQUIRED BY THE COUNTY.
THERE WERE NO COMPLAINTS RECEIVED THIS QUARTER.
THE MANAGE -- MANAGEMENT TEAM AND ELITE CUSTODIANS UNDERWENT TRAINING AND PRACTICE IN CASE WE EXPERIENCE AN ACTIVE SHOOTER ON CAMPUS THIS PAST MONDAY. I WON'T DESCRIBE THE FULL DETAILS OF WHAT WE LEARNED, BUT IT WAS HUMBLING, INFORMATIVE AND NERVE-WRACKING WHEN WE REVIEW AND PRACTICE FOR SUCH EVENTS. EACH SCHOOL SITE WILL UNDERGO ITS OWN TRAINING WITH THEIR STAFF AND WERE THE -- WITH THE AUTHORITIES. I WANT TO THANK DR. AVILA FOR THE TRAINING AND THE MANAGEMENT TEAM'S DILIGENCE TO SUCH AN IMPORTANT MATTER. THAT CONCLUDES THE
SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT. >> THANK YOU, DR. DRATI.
[10. BOARD COMMUNICATIONS]
WE WILL NOW GO INTO BOARD COMMUNICATIONS.BOARD MEMBER ARMSTRONG? >> GOOD EVENING, EFRPBL.
EVERYONE. THANK YOU FOR COMING OUT THIS EVENING FOR THIS BOARD MEETING. THIS MONTH I DID ATTEND THE TEACHER OF THE YEAR BANQUET AND WE CELEBRATED MS. MELISSA ELLIS. NOT ONLY IS SHE TEACHER OF THE YEAR, BUT SHE WAS DISTINGUISHED.
WE WERE HOPING SHE WOULD GO FURTHER AND GET EVEN MORE AWARDS. I ALSO ATTENDED THE STEAM RECEPTION. I DID LEAVE EARLY THOUGH.
I ATTENDED THE CALIFORNIA LATINO SCHOOL BOARD ASSOCIATION MEETING. THE ONLY THING WITH THAT IS THAT THE CONFERENCE WAS CANCELED.
HOWEVER, SOME OF THE ACTIVITIES STILL PLAYED OUT -- WE HAD A SPEAKER AND WE HAD AN EVENT AT THE QUEEN MARY.
SHE ADDRESSED US. THEY DECIDED TO POSTPONE THE REST OF THE CONFERENCE BECAUSE THEY WERE STRIKING.
IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT DOLORES HUERTA AND HER WORK WITH CIVIL RIGHTS, SHE IS NOT GOING TO ENCOURAGE US TO -- YOU KNOW, ENCOURAGE WORKERS ACROSS THE PICKET LINE.
HOWEVER, IT WAS REALLY NICE TO SEE HER AND HER FAMILY AND HER CARRYING ON THE LEGACY. FOR THOSE WHO DON'T KNOW, SHE IS THE KEUZ -- COUSIN OF CAESAR CHAVEZ.
A LOT OF PEOPLE DON'T KNOW THAT.
I DID ATTEND THE STATE OF THE CITY.
IT WAS INTERESTING AND EXCITING TO SEE WHAT IS GOING ON IN OUR CITY OF BELLFLOWER. WE ARE GROWING SO MUCH.
DESPITE THE THINGS THAT HAPPENED AROUND THE SCHOOLS WITH INCIDENTS WE ARE KEEPING OUR CITY UP AND RUNNING AND MAKING IT EVEN BETTER. I ATTENDED THE HOMECOMING GAME.
IT WAS A LOT OF FUN. MY DAUGHTER IS A CHEERLEADER SO I ALWAYS GO TO THE GAME BECAUSE I HAVE TO SEE HER.
THAT WAS A LOT OF FUN. AND IT CARRIED OVER TO THE NEXT DAY BECAUSE EVERYBODY WAS EXCITED ABOUT THE HOMECOMING DANCE. THOSE TIMES ARE EXCITING AND I
[00:40:04]
WILL CHERISH THOSE MOMENTS. I HAVE ONE MORE YEAR TO ENJOY THOSE MOMENTS WITH MY CHILD. I ALSO WANT TO BRING AWARENESS TO OF COURSE BREAST CANCER AWARENESS.THEY HAD AN EVENT THIS PAST WEEKEND IN COMPTON AND IT WAS THE WALK FOR A CURE. THAT'S WHAT THEY TITLED IT.
I KIND OF MISSED IT THOUGH BECAUSE THEY DON'T DO THE WALK LIKE WE DO IT IN BELLFLOWER WHEN WE HAVE THE RELAY FOR LIFE. IT GOES ALL DAY AND ALL NIGHT AND ENDS THE NEXT MORNING. I THOUGHTS THAT IS HOW THEY HAVE THEIR SET UP. THE FESTIVITIES STARTED AND ENDED AND I COULDN'T ATTEND TO -- ATTEND THAT.
I COULDN'T ATTEND BECAUSE OUR CHEERLEADERS HAD AN EVENT AT UCL A. UCLA, SO I HAVE TO PICK AND CHOOSE. JUST TO BRING UH -- AWARENESS TO BREAST CANCER AWARENESS. IF YOU FEEL IN YOUR HEART YOU CAN CONTRIBUTE TO ONE OF THESE ORGANIZATIONS AND JUST ENCOURAGE EACH OTHER, YOUR FRIENDS AND YOUR FAMILY TO GO AND HAVE THEMSELVES CHECKED OUT BECAUSE IT IS CURABLE.
IF YOU HAVE BEEN ATTENDING THE MEETINGS AND FOLLOWING US, WE HAVE BEEN TALKING A LOT ABOUT AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT AND TRYING TO HAVE MORE ACCOMMODATIONS AND MORE AWARE.
I JUST WANT TO READ THIS. I FOUND THIS ARTICLE AND IT IS TITLED "WE NEED A CHAMPION." AND SO WHAT I REALLY WANT TO CHALLENGE ALL OF US TO DO IS LEARN ABOUT DISABILITY ETIQUETTE. DON'T USE LABELS.
ASK THE INDIVIDUALS HOW THEY CHOOSE TO IDENTIFY AND AVOID USING ABLEIST METAPHORS SUCH AS CRAZY AND LAME.
ONE WAY WE CAN DO THAT IS LEARN TO RECOGNIZE OUR OWN BIASES.
LEARN HOW YOUR UNCONSCIOUS BIAS CAN IMPACT YOUR BEHAVIOR TOWARD PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES. IF YOU WANT MORE INFORMATION, I CAN GIVE UH WEBSITE SO YOU CAN -- I CAN GIVE YOU A WEBSITE TO LOOK UP INFORMATION FOR YOURSELF.
WE CAN INTERACT WITH PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES.
AND THOSE WHO HAVE AN AUTHENTIC RELATIONSHIP WITH THOSE WITH DISABILITIES ACT IN A LESS PREJUDICE WAY AND HAVE GREATER DISABILITY AGO -- ACCEPTANCE. DON'T AVOID SOCIAL INTERACTIONS WITH PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES. IT IS A FORM OF ABLEISM.
AND WHAT WE CAN DO IS RECOGNIZE AND RESPOND TO ABLEISM.
NEVER ASSUME WITH A VISIBLE OR NON-VISIBLE DISABILITY THEY CAN'T DO SPH-BG. DOING SOMETHING.
THAT IS A FORM OF ABLEISM WHICH IS A FORM OF SOCIETAL ATTITUDES AND STRUCTURES WE HAVE IN PLACE AND POLICY THAT'S DEVALUE PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES. WE NEED TO HAHN -- HONOR INTER SEPBGS -- INTERCESSIONAL IDENTITIES AND ADHERE TO DISABILITY ETIQUETTE AND HELP THOSE WHO DO NOT.
WE'RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER AND LET'S HELP EACH OTHER.
WE NEED TO BE AWARE OF ACCESSIBILITY BARRIERS.
WE NEED TO CONSIDER ACCESSIBILITY BARRIERS THAT ARE PHYSICAL, ATTITUDINAL AND IMPLICIT WITH EDUCATIONAL POLICIES PRACTICES. AND WE NEED TO STRIVE TO MAKE INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENTS FOR EVERYONE.
LACK OF ACCESSIBILITY ENGAGES IN DIALOGUE.
MAKE SURE THEY ARE PRESENT IN CONVERSATIONS AND DECISION MAKES. DECISION MAKING.
PEOPLE ARE THE EXPERTS IN THEIR OWN LIVED EXPERIENCES.
AND WE ALSO NEED TO INCLUDE DISABILITY CONTENT IN OUR CURRICULUM. WE NEED TO TEACH OUR CHILDREN THAT MAYFAIR HAS AN ASSEMBLY EVERY YEAR THAT BRINGS THE KIDS OUT TOGETHER AND IT IS A BUG -- BIG OLD PARTY.
I DON'T KNOW IF THERE WAS TIME FOR IT THIS YEAR.
[00:45:03]
MAYFAIR BRINGS THE KIDS OUT AND IT IS A WONDERFUL TIME.I HAVE BEEN TO IT BEFORE. WE NEED TO ADVOCATE FOR A POLICY THAT GOES BEYOND A BIAS. THE MOST IMPACTED ARE LEADING THE EFFORTS. NOTHING ABOUT US WITHOUT US.
WE NEED TO PUSH FOR POLICIES THAT UP LIFT AND SUPPORT THE BROADER ISSUES OF DISABILITY RIGHTS AND PUT THOSE WHO ARE IMPACTED BY MULTIPLE MARGINALIZED IDENTITIES AT THE FOREFRONT OF THESE EFFORTS. I DO APPRECIATE YOU LISTENING AND WE ARE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER, YOU ALL.
WE NEED TO BE A CHAMPION AND WE CAN HOLD EACH OTHER UP.
THANK YOU. THANK YOU, BOARD MEMBER ARMSTRONG. BOARD MEMBER ELHESSEN.
>> THANK YOU FOR ENLIGHTENING US, BOARD MEMBER ARMSTRONG.
IT IS DISABILITY AWAY -- DISABILITY AWARENESS MONTH FOR EMPLOYMENT. I'M SURE YOU WILL BE SEEING THAT IN SOCIAL MEDIA. I WANTED TO START OFF MY BOARD REPORT AND ALL OF YOU KNOW I HAVE AN APPOINTEE WHO IS DOING SOMETHING FOR US AND I THOUGHT THAT WAS GREAT.
SHE HAS PROPOSED A SUMMER TUTORING PROGRAM AT THE LIBRARY THAT WILL RUN EIGHT WEEKS WITH A FOCUS OF LEADING MATH -- OF READING -- MATH, READING AND FOR STUDENTS THROUGH THE GRADES OF 1ST THROUGH 8TH GRADES.
ONE OF THOSE TO BE CELEBRATED IS OUR LIBRARIAN.
ACCORDING TO HER STATISTICS, THE CALIFORNIA REPORT CARD READING STATED THAT 58% OF CALIFORNIA THIRD GRADERS ARE BELOW READING LEVEL AT READING AND AMONG STUDENTS OF COLOR IT RISES. I HOPE STAFF WILL POST THAT AS WE MOVE FORWARD AND GETTING CLOSER I MET WITH THE VICE PRESIDENT OF STUDENT SERVICES. AND THE REASON WE TALKED, WE WERE BASICALLY LOOKING AT RE-ESTABLISHING SOMETHING THAT I HAD STARTED IN 2017 WHEN I WAS ON THE BOARD CALLED A BRIDGE PROGRAM PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES.
DISABLED STUDENTS EARN COLLEGE CREDIT AND THEY HAVE TRANSITIONED TO THE COMMUNITY COLLEGE.
SHE WAS POSITIVE AND WELCOMING OF THE IDEA.
AND WE ARE GOING TO START MOVING FORWARD.
SHE IS MOVING FORWARD AND TALKING WITH STAFF.
I WAS ALSO HAPPY TO HEAR THAT THE MENTAL MODEL THAT I INTRODUCED TO THE DISTRICT HAS BEEN ADOPTED.
THANK YOU DR. AVILA FOR INCLUDING IT -- INCLUDING THE COMPONENTS AS WELL AS THE BEAUTIFUL ARTWORK YOU DID AROUND THAT. I CREDIT DR. DRATI'S PRESENTATION AND PODCAST IN DISCUSSING THAT.
I LOOK FORWARD TO THE OUTCOME OF THAT.
AND I WANTED TO KNOW THAT BOARD MEMBER ARMSTRONG AND MYSELF WILL BE PRESENTING NEXT WEEK AT THE CALIFORNIA SCHOOL BOARD ASSOCIATION FOR BLACK EDUCATORS.
THE TOPIC IS ON EMPOWERING STUDENTS OF COLOR THROUGH THE ADA IN REGARDS TO CREATING GREATER ADVOCACY.
WE HAVE BEEN WORKING ON OUR PRESENTATION.
I'M EXCITED IN PRESENTING THAT. WE ARE GONNA BE PRESENTING THAT TOGETHER. ALSO I WANTED TO ANNOUNCE THAT CAL APPS IS NOMINATED TO RECEIVE THE GOLDEN BELL AWARD AT THE CONFERENCE IF SAN FRANCISCO.
CURRENTLY WE HAVE 998 STUDENTS ENROLLED OVER 16 COURSES BEING OFFERED. THIS IS AN OUTSTANDING GROWTH AND IT HAS TO DO WITH OUR LEADERSHIP OF OUR CEO.
I ALSO ATTENDED -- I'M LOSING MY VOICE.
SORRY. I ATTENDED THE ESTEEM BUILDING RECEPTION WHICH I THOUGHT WAS REALLY GREAT AND ALLOWED BOARD MEMBERS ACROSS THE DIFFERENT DISTRICTS TO SEE THE WORK WE ARE DOING AND I WAS MOST IMPRESSED WITH OUR TABLE THAT HAS THREE CADAVERS, ANIMATION, NOT REAL CADAVERS, DISPLAYED AND IT GIVES STUDENTS ACTUALLY REAL EXPERIENCE IN LOOKING AT THE BONE STRUCTURE, MUSCLES, TENDONS AND THE BRAIN.
[00:50:03]
IT WAS REALLY QUITE ASTONISHING AND I WAS IMPRESSED AS WELL AS THE ROOFTOP GARDEN WHERE WE GOT TO EAT SOME CARROTS.IT WAS DELICIOUS AND SWEET. IT WAS A GREAT EXPERIENCE AND I AM VERY PROUD OF OUR ESTEEM BUILDING AND OUR PRINCIPAL BEING ABLE TO MOVE THINGS FORWARD AND OUR STUDENTS ARE LEARNING ONE STEP FORWARD ALSO. I THINK THAT CONCLUDES MY BOARD REPORT. I WANTED TO LEAVE A FINAL MESSAGE, A MOTIVATIONAL MESSAGE.
THE STRONGEST PEOPLE ARE THOSE WHO WIN BATTLES WE KNOW NOTHING ABOUT. THANK YOU.
>> BOARD MEMBER STKEB -- STEWART?
>> SORRY I AM COMING DOWN WITH A COLD.
I DON'T KNOW HOW I MISSED THIS EVENT LAST REPORT, BUT I ATTENDED A FEW WEEKS AGO THE BELL TPHROU -- BELLFLOWER VERSUS MAYFAIR GIRLS FLAG FOOTBALL GAME.
I'M SORRY TO BOTH OF THOSE TEAMS. WATCHING THEM PLAY WAS SO MUCH FUN.
SHE WAS ACTUALLY MY BASKETBALL COACH WHEN I WENT TO BELLFLOWER. I AM AGING HER.
WE WENT FROM MAYFAIR SIDE AND BELLFLOWER SIDE.
I'M SORRY I FORGOT THAT EVENT AND I'M SO GLAD THEY ARE DOING AMAZING. ON SEPTEMBER 25TH I ATTENDED THE LOS ANGELES COUNTY FEDERATION OF LABOR MEETING.
I AM ONE OF THE DELEGATES FOR THE FED.
IT WAS NICE TO SUPPORT THEM TO HEAR THEIR ENDORSEMENTS AND BE SUPPORTIVE AND BE INVOLVED IN THAT.
SEPTEMBER 28TH I WENT TO ESTEEM NIGHT WITH COLLEAGUES.
OCTOBER 2 T*PBD I STARTED -- SECOND I STARTED COURSE ONE WHICH IS FOUNDATIONAL OF A GOVERNANCE.
I AM FINDING OUT WHAT TO DO AND WHATNOT TO DO AND TAKING IT AND APPLYING IT WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO OUR OWN BOARD AND OTHER BOARDS I SEE. I AM EXCITED I WILL DO THIS THE NEXT TWO MONTHS EVERY MONDAY NIGHT, BUT I AM EXCITED TO LEARN AND TO LEARN MORE FROM MY PEERS FROM ACROSS THE STATE.
ON OCTOBER 2 *EUBGZ -- OCTOBER 6TH I ATTEND -- ATTENDED THE HOMECOMING GAME. THAT WAS PRETTY AWESOME.
ON SATURDAY I WENT TO A TEDX OR TEDX IN THE CRENSHAW DISTRICT.
IT WAS A TALK AND I WAS INVITED BY ONE OF MY FRIENDS.
SHE IS A BELLFLOWER HIGH SCHOOL ALUMNI, DR. CYNTHIA COLON.
SHE KA -- ASKED WHAT I THOUGHT AND I SENT HER A LONG VOICE MESSAGE. SHE TALKED ABOUT COLLEGE APPLICATIONS AND HOW TO DIFFERENTIATE YOURSELF ON COLLEGE APPLICATIONS WHEN YOU WANT TO GET INTO SO MANY SCHOOLS AND IT IS SO COMPETITIVE.
JUST THE KEY DETAILS OF WHAT YOU CAN DO AS FAR AS JUST BUILDING UP YOUR RESUME. MAKING SURE YOU ARE IN CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES AND SPORTS AND BEING PRESIDENT OF ASD AND THE -- ASB AND THE KIDS WHO TALK TO US WITH THE STUDENT BOARD REPORTS AND ALL OF THOSE THINGS.
IT WAS AN AWESOME SPEECH TO HEAR HER TALK ABOUT THAT.
AND I LOVE THE FACT THAT SHE IS AN ALUMNI OF BELLFLOWER.
I WAS EXCITED SHE INVITED ME. THAT WAS REALLY NICE.
AND ON A PERSONAL NOTE AND THIS IS A WEIRD ONE, BUT ON SATURDAY I WENT TO THE HAPPA AWARD, THE HOLLYWOOD AFRICAN PRESS TEE YOUS UH -- PRESS STAOE -- PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS.
MY FRIEND WON FOR BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS IN AN INDEPENDENT FILM. I WANT TO SAY CONGRATULATIONS TO HER. THE REASON I TRY TO HIGHLIGHT PEOPLE THAT ARE ALUMNI OR PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY IS BECAUSE WE WANT TO BUILD A CULTURE HERE IN BELLFLOWER THAT IS COMMUNITY AND FAMILY-BASED. I THINK PART IS RECOGNIZING THE PEOPLE FROM THE PAST AND HONORING THE PEOPLE THAT ARE WORKING FOR US NOW AND OUR STUDENTS AND EVERYONE BEING INVOLVED. I FEEL LIKE THIS SHOULD BE A FAMILY ATMOSPHERE. I REALLY LIKE TO HIGHLIGHT PEOPLE LIKE THAT IN MY BOARD REPORTS WHEN I COME ACROSS THEM. I ALSO WANT TO GIVE A PLUG ABOUT JOINING PTA. MAKE SURE YOU JOIN PTA.
THEY ARE STILL TAKING MEMBERSHIPS AND THEY ARE SO IMPORTANT. A MESSAGE I WOULD LIKE TO GIVE IS BE KIND TO PEOPLE AND SHOW RESPECT AND LISTEN.
THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS YOU CAN DO TO BE A BETTER PERSON AND I WOULD LIKE TO GIVE THEM THAT ADVICE.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. >> THANK YOU, BOARD MEMBER STEWART. BOARD MEMBER CRISP -- BOARD
MEMBER CRIHFIELD? >> THANK YOU.
IT HAS BEEN A CRAZY COUPLE WEEKS, BUT IT HAS BEEN A PRODUCTIVE COUPLE WEEKS. A LOT OF EXCITING THINGS HAPPENING. MOST OF THE EVENTS WE HAVE SPOKEN ABOUT, BUT THERE WAS A PRAYER BREAKFAST AND THE STATE OF THE CITY. I AGREE WITH MY COLLEAGUE
[00:55:02]
ARMSTRONG. UH -- A LOT OF GREAT THINGS HAPPENING IN THE CITY. REALLY COOL THINGS THAT I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT. THERE IS SOME COOL STUFF HAPPENING. HE DID A GOOD JOB AND THAT WAS NICE TO SEE. THE CAL APPS MEETINGS AND THE PROGRAMS ARE WELL PRODUCED. I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THANK YOU TO OUR CEO FOR PUTTING THOSE TOGETHER.I KNOW WE AS A DISTRICT ARE PUTTING THE VIDEOS TOGETHER.
I APPRECIATE THE FACT THAT WE ARE STARTING TO HIGHLIGHT THE COURSES THAT MAKE OUR DISTRICT SPECIAL AND WE CAN SHARE THOSE AND REALLY GUIDE STUDENTS INTO THE CAREER PATH.
THOSE ARE COMING OUT SOON AND THAT WAS EXCITING.
I GOT THE OPPORTUNITY TO SIT THROUGH MY OWN DAUGHTER'S IEP.
THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I SAT THROUGH THE IEP BOTH AS A PARENT FIRST AND FOREMOST, BUT AS A BOARD MEMBER.
SO IT WAS -- IT WAS AN INTERESTING EXPERIENCE.
THEY ARE RECOGNIZING HOW MANY PEOPLE AND HOW MUCH EFFORT GOES INTO EACH IEP AND HOW MUCH TIME IT TAKES AND HOW MUCH COLLABORATION IS NECESSARY TO MAKE SURE WE ARE GIVING OUR STUDENTS THE SUPPORTS THEY NEED.
I HAVE AN AMAZING IEP TEAM AND I THINK WE HAVE A SECOND ONE COMING UP. A LOT OF PEOPLE AT THAT TABLE.
IT WAS ILLUMINATING HOW MUCH WORK GOES INTO THAT.
IT DID BRING UP A LOT. WE CAN MAKE OUR PROCESSES BETTER AND FILL IN AND ADDRESS SOME OF THE CONCERNS THAT THE STAFF AND PARENTS HAD. THIS WAS A LONG MEETING, BUT VERY INFORMATIVE IN MULTIPLE WAYS.
THAT'S BASICALLY IT. PEOPLE TELL ME BECAUSE I HAVE SO MUCH GOING ON ON A PERSONAL SIDE OF THINGS.
WHY DO I GO TO SO MANY EVENTS AND WHY DO I DO SO MUCH WITH THIS HAT ON? IT IS GREAT TO SEE OUR STUDENTS IT IS A GET TO. THANK YOU.
>> THANK YOU, BOARD MEMBER CRIHFIELD.
AS FOR MYSELF, I ALSO ATTENDED SOME OF THE EVENTS.
THE ESTEEM BUILDING WONDERFUL TURN OUT AND THANK YOU FOR YOUR WORK. WE REALLY -- YOU COULD TELL.
APPRECIATE ALL OF THAT. LAKEWOOD CELEBRATES ATTENDED WITH DR. DRATI AND WE ARE ABLE TO SEE HOW THEY ARE DOING.
AMAZING THINGS IN THAT CITY AS WELL.
BELLFLOWER HIGH SCHOOL HOMECOMING GAME.
THIS FRIDAY, TOMORROW, WE WILL BE ATTENDING THE PARAMOUNT GAME AS WELL AS SOME OF MY BOARD COLLEAGUES AND LOOKING FORWARD TO THEM. I ALSO AM HAPPY THAT BOARD MEMBER ARMSTRONG SPOKE OUT ABOUT DISABILITIES.
THAT WAY I CAN HIGHLIGHT THE FACT THAT ALL OF US ON THIS BOARD HAVE A PERSONAL CONNECTION TO SOMEONE WITH A DISABILITY. BY BOARD MEMBER ELHESSEN'S DEFINITION, A LOT OF TIMES THERE ARE BATTLES GOING ON IN THE BACKGROUND THAT NO ONE ELSE REALLY REALIZES YOU ARE FIGHTING AND THAT MAKES ALL OF US EXTREMELY AND WE CAN CONTINUE TO WORK TOGETHER SO THAT WE CAN MAKE IT BETTER FOR OUR STUDENTS. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
[11. DISCUSSION ITEMS]
IT IS TIME FOR DISCUSSION ITEMS.WE HAVE TWO DISCUSSION ITEMS THIS EVENING.
AT THIS TIME I WILL RETURN THIS OVER TO DR. ABNER TO DISCUSS
THE SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION. >> GOOD EVENING, BOARD.
[01:00:12]
THIS EVENING THE DISTRICT STAFF WILL BE PROVIDING AN UPDATE AS SOME OF THE SUPPORTS ARE IN PLACE TO SUPPORT SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION. RED RIBBON WEEK IS KNOWLEDGE IN THIS MONTH AND WE WANTED TO PROVIDE AN UPDATE OF THIS TOPIC. I AM JOINED THIS EVENING BY MSM ADMINISTER GUIDANCE AND BRITNEY GASPAR, ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL OF BELLFLOWER MIDDLE. AND THE COUNSELOR FROM THE MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL. THE PURPOSE OF THE SLIDE IS TO PROVIDE AWARENESS OF THE SERVICES THE DISTRICT HAS FOR AWARENESS OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION AT SECONDARY SCHOOLS. OUR PRESENTERS WILL ELABORATE FURTHER OF EACH OF THESE PARTICULAR AREAS TO PROVIDE THE BOARD AND THE COMMUNITY WITH AWARENESS.I ALSO WOULD LIKE TO TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY TO ACKNOWLEDGE THE WORK OF THE PTA WHO SUPPORTS THE STUDENTS AND PARENTS IN THE BUSD COMMUNITY. AT THIS TIME I WILL TURN IT OVER TO MS. STACY WILLIAMS TO DISCUSS A LITTLE ABOUT COMMUNITY PARTNERS AND OUT REACH.
>> THANK YOU. GOOD EVENING, PRESIDENT GARZA AND BOARD MEMBERS, DR. DRATI AND CABINET MEMBERS.
THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME THIS EVENING.
WE ARE BLESSED IN BELLFLOWER TO HAVE AS MANY COMMUNITY PARTNERS AS WE DO THAT SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS.
SOME OF THOSE PARTNERS THAT WE WORK WITH ARE L.A. COTTA.
THAT IS COUNSELING FOR DRUG USE.
WE HAVE COMMUNITY FAMILY GUIDANCE WHICH IS ALSO COUNSELING, BUT ALSO THERAPY. WE PARTNER WITH THE TOBACCO USE AND THE COMMUNITY SCHOOL INITIATIVE WHICH WAS PWHRAUT D.A. R -- BROUGHT TO BELLFLOWER AND WILL BE MOVING INTO MAYFAIR THIS YEAR. IT IS A PARTNERSHIP THAT WILL PROVIDE SITES AND STAFF TO ADDRESS THE NEEDS OF THE STUDENTS BY BRINGING THE SERVICE TO THE SITE SO WE CAN REMOVE THE BARRIER. THEY PARTNERED FOR MANY, MANY YEARS. THINK TOGETHER AND YMCA HAVE BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL CARE AND ENRICHMENT AND WORKSHOPS AS WELL. THE MOST RECENT PARENT WORKSHOP WAS MENTAL HEALTH AND SUICIDE PREVENTION.
THE CORE FEATURES WERE THE FACTS AND THE MYTHS ABOUT SO -- SUICIDE. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE WARNING SIGNS AND THE RISK FACTORS AND WHO IS THE HIGHEST AT-RISK AND WHY. SUGGESTIONS FOR RESPONDING TO SUICIDE RISK AND APPROPRIATE WAYS TO INTERACT WITH AT-RISK YOUTH. FINALLY WE PROVIDED A LOT OF RESOURCES TO THE FAMILY THAT'S ATTENDED AND THE COUNSELORS INCLUDED HOW TO GET SUPPORT ON THEIR PARTICULAR CAMPUS.
ANY QUESTIONS? >> WE CAN TAKE QUESTIONS AT THE
MY NAME IS BRITNEY AND AN ASSISTANT SPRINGS PAL AT BELLFLOWER MID-- AT BELLFLOWER MIDDLE HIGH SCHOOL.
INTER QUEST DETECTION K9'S IS A DRUG PREVENTION PROGRAM.
THE K9'S ARE TRAINED TO DETECT SUBSTANCES SUCH AS DRUGS, ALCOHOL, GUN POWDER, IMMEDIATE TKAEUGSS.
SUBSTANCE THAT'S POSE A CONCERN TO A STUDENT POP LAYING -- POPULATION. THE GOAL IS TO HAVE A POSITIVE PRESENCE AND HAVE EVERYBODY FEEL SAFE ON CAMPUS.
IN DOING THIS, WE DO HAVE RANDOM INSPECTIONS AND WE FIRST INTRODUCED THE PROGRAM BY HAVING ASSEMBLIES IN THE BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. WE HAD A MEMBER FROM THE PROGRAM AND THE K-9 COME OUT AND SPEAK TO THE STUDENTS.
WE SENT HOME LETTERS TO THE COMMUNITY SO EVERYONE WAS AWARE OF WHAT WAS HAPPENING. TO GIVE SOME DATA THE FIRST THREE VISITS, WE THE -- WE HAD THREE ALERTS ON THE FIRST AND FIVE ON THE SECOND AND FIVE ON THE THIRD VISITS.
WE HAVE HAD TWO OTHERS SINCE THEN THAT ARE NOT ON THE PRY STATION. AND SINCE THEN WE HAVE HAD THREE ALERTS. AS THE TIME GOES ON THERE ARE LESS ALERTS. LAS FLORES.
AND I KNOW MAYFAIR HAS HAD TWO VISITS SINCE THE DATA.
THIS IS THE FIRST YEAR WITH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PROGRAM.
WE HAVE RECEIVED POSITIVE FEEDBACK FROM STUDENTS AND THE DATA. WE HEARD FROM STUDENTS THAT THEY FEEL SAFER ON CAMPUS AND CAN USE THE BATHROOM WITHOUT IT BEING SMOKED IN. AND WE HEARD STUDENTS SAY
[01:05:01]
STUDENTS ARE NOT BRINGING SUBSTANCES TO SCHOOL AS MUCH ANYMORE. I AM EXCITED.I DO FEEL A DIFFERENCE JUST WORKING ON THE CAMPUS AND I LOOK FORWARD TO CONTINUING ON THIS YEAR AND HOPEFULLY IN THE FUTURE. I WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO THE BOARD FOR HELPING US CREATE THIS PARTNERSHIP WITH INTER QUEST AS IT HAS PROVEN TO BE SUCCESSFUL SO FAR.
THANK YOU. >> GOOD EVENING, BOARD.
>> TOGETHER WE ARE GOING TO PRESENT ON THE STUDENT ENGAGEMENT PIECE. THE COUNSELING TEAM AND ADMIN HAVE COORDINATED GUEST SPEAKERS TO DOM -- COME AND VISIT OUR EXPERIENCES AND SHARE THE EXPERIENCES LIKE THE MOST RECENT ONE WAS PROJECT ELY. A PARENT CAME AND SHARED HER EXPERIENCE OF LOSING HER SON THROUGH FENTANYL USE.
THAT WAS POWERFUL FOR OUR STUDENTS.
THE COUNSELING PRESENTATIONS TO INCLUDE SUPPORT AND THE CHP HAS ALSO COME AND DONE A PRESENTATION WHERE THEY SHOW FIRSTHAND WHAT A CAR LOOKS LIKE WHEN IT HAS BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT AND DIFFERENT CONSEQUENCES FOR DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE.
>> WE HAVE HAD ACTIVITIES TO PROMOTE SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION AND WE HAVE PAMPHLETS AVAILABLE FOR STUDENTS. WE AS COUNSELORS SPEAK TO STUDENTS AND REVIEW THEIR GRADES AND ATTENDANCE AND BEHAVIOR AND OTHER NEEDS AND WE HAVE THE WELLNESS CENTER AVAILABLE FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS.
>> LAST SCHOOL YEAR IN THIS PARTICULAR AREA, WE WERE REALLY ABLE TO ENGAGE OUR STUDENTS AND OUR STAFF AND OUR PARENTS IN PLACE. PART OF LISTENING TO THE FEEDBACK THAT WE WERE RECEIVING, IT WAS TKWERPL -- DETERMINED THAT WE NEED TO UPDATE OUR PROGRAM AND TAKE A DIFFERENT APPROACH. AS A RESULT OF THAT WE TASKED A GROUP OF INDIVIDUALS THAT CAME TOGETHER WHICH INCLUDED OUR COUNSELORS AND OUR DEANS AND OUR HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPALS TO REALLY LOOK AT OUR PROGRAM AND SEE WHAT UPDATES WE CAN MAKE TO THAT TO BETTER ENHANCE IT AND ADDRESS THE NEEDS OF OUR STUDENTS. AS I MENTIONED -- NO, I DIDN'T MENTION, BUT WE WERE ABLE TO PARTNER TO LOOK AT SOME OF THE TRENDS IN L.A. COUNTY AND TO HELP US IDENTIFY AN EVIDENCE-BASED APPROACH AND MATERIALS THAT WE CAN USE TO ENGAGE STUDENTS IN THIS PARTICULAR AREA.
AT THIS TIME I WILL TURN IT OVER TO MS. STACY WILLIAMS TO GO FURTHER INTO THE PROGRAM REFERRED TO AS RISE.
AS YOU CAN SEE, AS WE WERE GOING THROUGH THE CHANGES AND LOOKING AT HOW TO UPDATE IT, WE FOUND THAT THERE WAS A NEED TO UPDATE THE NAME AS WELL. GLAD BECAME RISE IT STANDS FOR RESTORATIVE INTERVENTIONS EQUALS SUCCESSFUL EDGE -- EDUCATION. WE ADDED INITTER -- INTERVENTIONS PRIOR TO ATTENDING RIS SERBGS -- RISE.
IT WAS NOT ONE AND DONE. ONE IS NAVIGATE 360 WHERE LESSONS CAN BE GIVEN TO STUDENTS BASED ON WHAT THE AREA OF NEED IS. RISE ITSELF IS AN INTENTION INTERVENTION FOR STUDENTS. IT IS TWO FULL DAYS, BUT IT DOES ADDRESS THEIR PARTICULAR NEEDS.
RISE IS REPLACING GLAD WE PARTNERS WITH LAICO TO MAKE SURE WE WENT THROUGH IT AND FOUND WE MET OUR NEEDS AND THAT WE COULD USE IT. AND SO NOW OUR GLAD PROGRAM IS RISE. QUESTIONS?
>> I JUST WANT TO THANK AGAIN THE BOARD FOR THEIR SUPPORT IN THIS PARTICULAR AREA AS WE WORK TO PROVIDE A SAFE AND SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT TO OUR STUDENTS.
AT THIS TIME IF THE BOARD HAS ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING THE
INFORMATION THAT WAS PRESENTED. >> BOARD MEMBER ARMSTRONG?
>> I JUST WANTED TO SAY THAT MY DAUGHTER TOLD ME ABOUT WHEN THE DOGS VISITED. WE'RE DOG PEOPLE.
IT IS LIKE, OKAY, DON'T LOSE FOCUS.
THE DOGS ARE THERE AND WORKING. THEY ARE NOT FOR YOU TO PLAY WITH. I'M GLAD TO SEE THAT WE HAVE ALREADY SEEN A REDUCTION IN CATCHING THESE STUDENTS WITH
[01:10:04]
THESE SUBSTANCES. I TELL YOU, THEY KNOW THEY ARE GOING TO BE PART OF STATISTICS IN ABOUT 20 AND 30 YEARS THEY WOULD STOP DOING THESE SUBSTANCES.SO THE EDUCATION ABOUT THE DRUGS AND THE EFFECTS IS REALLY IMPORTANT. I AM GLAD THAT WE HAVE THE DRUG-FREE WEEK COMING UP. JUST MAKE SURE THAT WE EDUCATE OUR KIDS ON WHAT IT REALLY DOES TO THE BODY.
THAT'S IT. NO OTHER QUESTIONS.
THANK YOU. >> THANK YOU, BOARD MEMBER ARMSTRONG. BOARD MEMBER ELHESSEN?
ONE ON THE K9'S. WHEN YOU SAY ALERT WAS DETECTED WAS IT COMPENSATED AND WAS IT DRUGS RELATED MOSTLY?
>> CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG -- >> I CAN SPEAK ON BEHALF OF BELLFLOWER. WHEN I SAY ALERTS IT MEANS THE DOG DETECTED AN ODOR OF ONE OF THE SUBSTANCES.
AT THAT POINT WE DO SEARCH. IN THIS CASE THERE ARE TIMES WE HAVE TAKEN ITEMS INTO OUR POSSESSION AND IT WAS TRANSFER ODOR. MEANING THE STUDENT'S BACKPACK MAY HAVE BEEN AROUND THE SUBSTANCE AND THE SMELL IS STILL THERE OR THE STUDENT WAS AROUND THE SUBSTANCE OR SOMEBODY DOING IT IN THE HOME OR OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL.
WE HAVE FURTHER DISCUSSIONS WITH THE STUDENT AND CALL HOME TO MAKE THE PARENTS AWARE THAT THE STUDENT MAY HAVE BEEN SEARCHED AND THIS IS WHY. WE HAVE TAKEN THINGS INTO OUR POE -- POSSESSION AND IT WAS VAPES ON ALL ACCOUNTS AT
THE SECOND QUESTION IS ON THE RISE PROGRAM.
CAN YOU GIVE ME AN EXAMPLE OF WHAT THE NEEDS ARE AND HOW THE
CURRICULUM IS STRUCTURED? >> FOR EXAMPLE STUDENTS ARE ASSIGNED SPECIFIC LESSONS SO THAT THEY ADDRESS WHATEVER IS GOING ON WITH THE STUDENT. FOR EXAMPLE, IF IF I HAVE A STUDENT VAPING WITH THC IT IS NOT A LESSON ON TOBACCO.
IT IS TO MEET THEIR NEEDS AND TO EDUCATE THEM ON THE EFFECTS.
>> WHEN I ASKED ABOUT THE CURRICULUM, I AM LOOKING AT ARE YOU DELVING INTO THE HEALTH PERSPECTIVE AND THE PSYCH PERSPECTIVE AND A COMBINATION OF IT? WHAT IS THE CURRICULUM STRUCTURE LIKE?
>> IT IS THE HARMFUL EFFECTS OF.
>> SO IT DOESN'T INCLUDE PSYCH COMPONENTS?
>> I DON'T KNOW THAT FOR SURE. >> THANK YOU.
>> TO ADD ON THAT, WHEN WE IDENTIFY A STUDENT THAT NEEDS THAT SUPPORT AS MENTIONED BY THE SCHOOL COUNSELORS, HOW WE APPROACH IT AS WELL AS THE CONTENT, BUT AS PART OF THE FOLLOW-UP SUPPORT THE COUNSELORS ARE MEETING WITH THE STUDENTS TO DETERMINE WHAT ARE THE NEEDS AND WHAT IS CAUSING THE BEHAVIOR. AT THAT POINT, CONNECTING THEM WITH COMMUNITY FAMILY GUIDANCE OR THEMSELVES PROVIDING A CHECK IN SUPPORT. I DON'T KNOW IF THERE IS ANYTHING ELSE THAT I CAN ADD TO THAT.
>> THANK YOU. >> WE HAVE A REFERRAL TO THE CARING CONNECTION AND THE CASE CONNECTION AND THEY DO AN INTAKE WITH THE FAMILY AND DEPENDING ON WHAT THEY WERE CAUGHT WITH, THEY DO A -- I BELIEVE AT BELLFLOWER THEY HAVE LA COTTA AT THEIR SITE AND WE ARE WORKING ON HAVING IT AT IN MAYFAI R*F -- MAY FAIR. THEY ARE FOLLOWED UP WITH THE
COUNSELOR. >> HAVING DONE COUNSELING AND WORKING WITH STUDENTS IT IS A MULTI-TIERED PROCESS.
IT IS NOT ONE AREA. LIKE YOU SAID, THE NEEDS ARE ON A WIDE SPECTRUM IN REGARDS TO IDENTIFYING.
THAT'S WHY I WAS CURIOUS. >> THEY STAY ON OUR RADAR.
WE CONTINUE TO CHECK IN AND WE SAW -- SUPPORT MAKING SURE THEY CONNECT WITH THEIR TEACHERS OR THE SECURITY GUARD AND JUST CONNECTING THEM WITH PEOPLE WHO CAN HELP THEM TPAF -- NAVIGATE AND BE SUCCESSFUL AND NOT THINKING ABOUT DOING THAT AS A
WAY TO COPE. >> AS PART OF THE PROGRAM, ARE YOU THINKING ABOUT INCORPORATING A MENTORSHIP?
GOOD. THE OTHER THING I WAS GOING TO MENTION -- IT SLIPPED MY MIND. WHEN YOU ARE GOING THROUGH THIS, ARE YOU COLLECTING DATA SO WE CAN GET STUDENT DEMOGRAPHICS WHETHER IT IS FOSTER YOUTH, YOUTH OF COLOR, THE AGE-GROUPS JUST FOR -- I DON'T KNOW IF OTHER BOARD
[01:15:03]
MEMBERS ARE INTERESTED IN KNOWING, BUT I THINK IT IS IMPORTANT FOR US TO KNOW SO THAT WE CAN HELP IDENTIFY SPECIFIC INTERVENTIONS AND ISSUES THAT COME UP.>> YEAH. OUR AREA SYSTEM ALREADY KNOW -- KNOW TATES RACE AND IF THEY ARE ON -- KNOW -- NOTATES RACE AND A HOMELESS AFFIDAVIT. IT IS ON THEIR RECORD IF THEY ARE CAUGHT WITH SOMETHING. AND WHEN YOU RUN THE QUERIES,
WE HAVE THE DATA THERE. >> GREAT.
THANK YOU. >> THANK YOU, BOARD MEMBER
ELHESSEN. >> BOARD MEMBER STEWART?
>> I AM GLAD TO HEAR THERE ARE POSITIVE COMMENTS FROM THE STUDENTS ESPECIALLY IN THE BATHROOM.
WE WANT OUR CHILDREN TO FEEL SAFE AT SCHOOL.
THAT MADE ME HAPPY. AND BRAD AND I GOT A DEMO AT MAYFAIR'S BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT WITH THE DOGS AND HOW IT WORKED AND HOW THEY ALERTED AND THAT WAS PRETTY AWESOME TO SEE.
THE ONLY QUESTION I HAVE -- ONE OF THE QUESTIONS I HAD, IS THERE VAPING AWARENESS BECAUSE IT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED AS WELL. HAVE WE STARTED THIS PROGRAM ALREADY? ARE STUDENTS USING THIS PROGRAM
RIGHT NOW? >> ARE YOU REFERRING TO RISE?
>> YES. >> WE HAVE IT AVAILABLE, BUT WE HAVEN'T HAD A STUDENT ELIGIBLE YET FOR RISE.
WE ARE READY AND WE ARE HOPING WE DON'T GET STUDENTS THERE, BUT ULTIMATELY OUR COUNSELORS ARE READY AND OUR SCHOOL COUNSELORS ARE THE ONES WHO FACILITATE THE RISE PROGRAMS. THEY HAVE A SCHEDULE READY TO GO AND THE CONTENTS ARE READY TO GO AND EVERYTHING IS READY TO GO.
>> AWESOME. THAT'S WHAT I WANTED TO HEAR.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. >> THANK YOU, BOARD MEMBER, STEWART. BOARD MEMBER CRIHFIELD?
>> FIRST, THANK YOU FOR THE WORK YOU ARE DOING.
EVEN THOUGH IT IS RELATIVELY NEW AND BEING INTERVENTION AND THE RESTORATIVE PART, I MEAN, I NOTICED JUST MYSELF THE AMOUNT OF STUDENT MATTERS AND YOU ARE DEFINITELY DOING SOMETHING WORKING AND I APPRECIATE IT. WE EVEN HAD A LITTLE EXTRA TIME BEFORE THE MEETING BECAUSE WE DIDN'T HAVE AS MANY STUDENT MATTERS. IT IS WORKING AND MAKING A DIFFERENCE SO THANK YOU FOR THE WORK YOU ARE DOING.
I DID HAVE ONE QUESTION. I THINK YOU KIND OF ALREADY ANSWERED IT THOUGH. IT IS MAINLY CANNABIS, CORRECT? THERE ARE SOME THAT ARE NOT. SO IS IT VAPING IN GENERAL AND
CANNABIS? >> AS OF RIGHT NOW WE HAVE BEEN DOING IT FOR TWO MONTHS. AT BELLFLOWER IT HAS BEEN CANNABIS. BUT THEY ARE TRAINED IN OTHER SUBSTANCES AND GUN POU -- GUN POWDERS.
>> WITH THE K-9'S AS FAR AS HOW MANY INSTANCES THERE HAVE BEEN DETECTING, DO WE KNOW ABOUT HOW MANY THAT'S BEEN? I KNOW IT IS NOT DETECTING IT ON A STAOUFPBT -- STUDENT.
SOMETIMES THEY DITCH IT IN A TRASHCAN.
THAT'S GREAT TOO. IT IS NOT JUST TRYING TO GET THE STUDENT -- IT IS MAKING SURE THEY DON'T FEEL LIKE BRINGING IT ON TO CAMPUS, RIGHT?
>> WE CAN PROVIDE A DATA REPORT AND WHAT WAS DETECTED AS PART OF THE BOARD WEEKLY TO GET MORE SPECIFICS.
>> THEY GET THAT EACH TIME THEY GO ON CAMPUS?
THAT'S GREAT. >> THEY TRACK AND AS FAR AS WHAT IS CONFISCATED AND ONE PARTICULAR ITEM WHETHER IT IS DUE TO RESIDUAL OR IF THEY COMPENSATED THAT WAS NOT ALLOWED TO BE ON SCHOOL GROUNDS.
THEY CAN DISTINGUISH WHAT IS THE ITEM.
>> AND JUST TO ADD SOMETHING TO YOUR COMMENTS, THERE HAVE BEEN TIMES WHERE WE SEARCH BATHROOMS ALSO AND WE HAVE FOUND VAPES IN THE BATHROOM THAT STUDENTS HAVE EITHER LEFT THERE IN A DITCH OR HAVE COME BACK TO. AND SO WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO REMOVE THOSE OFF CAMPUS AS WELL.
>> AWESOME. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
I APPRECIATE IT. >> THAT IS USUALLY WHAT HAPPENS. YOU CAN GO TO THE TRASHCANS OR OTHER PLACES AFTER THE DOGS LEAVE AND YOU WILL FIND ALL
KINDS OF OTHER STUFF. >> AND AGAIN BOARD AND COMMUNITY, OUR OBJECTIVE IS TO BE PREVENTATIVE, PREVENTION.
WE ARE PREPARED TO PROVIDING EARLIER INTERVENTION AND INTERVENTION IF WE DO FIND STUDENTS.
OUR GOAL IS TO INCREASE AWARENESS SO WE HAVE SUPPORT AND WE HAVE RESOURCES. OUR STAFF WILL DO A DILIGENT JOB TO OUT REACH. WE HAVE PROVIDED PARENT WORKSHOPS. WE WILL ENGAGE OUR PARENTS AROUND THIS TOPIC. BUT THE -- BUT ULTIMATELY IT IS A HOLISTIC APPROACH AND NOT JUST CONSEQUENCE, BUT THERE ARE CONSEQUENCES AVAILABLE, BUT WE TRY TO DO PREVENTATIVE WORK.
>> THANK YOU, BOARD MEMBER CRIHFIELD.
THANK YOU, STAFF. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR DOING THIS, WOULD. I KNOW IT IS A TIRELESS JOB TO
[01:20:06]
DO ALL OF THIS ON TOP OF WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO ON A DAILY BASIS. WE ALL APPRECIATE ALL YOUR WORK THAT YOU ARE DOING WITH OUR KWEUDZ -- KIDS.ALSO, I DID HAVE A QUESTION WITH REGARD TO PARENTS.
WHAT TYPE OF WORKSHOPS DO THEY ATTEND?
>> WE'VE HAD WAS IT TWO LAST YEAR OR ONE LAST YEAR? I THINK WE INVITED REPRESENTATIVES FROM THE DEA AND L.A. COTTA AND COMMUNITY FAMILY GUIDANCE TO DO A PRESENTATION AROUND FENTANYL. THAT'S WHEN WE WANTED TO HIGHLIGHT THE WORK WE DO IN THE DISTRICT REGARDING THE TRAINING WE HAVE ADDED TO OUR HEALTH ASSISTANCE AND OUR ADMINISTRATION USING NARCAN ON CAMPUS.
WE WANTED MORE AWARENESS ABOUT THAT AND MORE AWARENESS ABOUT FENTANYL AND THE HARMFUL EFFECTS.
THAT WAS LAST YEAR. THIS YEAR WE HAVE ONE SCHEDULED AND THEN WE HAVE ANOTHER ONE SCHEDULED AND WE ALSO HAVE ONE ON SAFETY AND WE DID SUICIDE PREVENTION.
WE ARE TRYING TO ENGAGE PARENTS ON VERY -- ON VARIOUS TOPICS, BUT WE HAVE SUBSTANCE PREVENTION TOO.
>> AND ANYTHING WE CAN DO TO MAKE SURE PARENTS COME TO WILL BE GREAT. I AM SAYING IT FOR ANYBODY OUT THERE, BUT ON THE BUSD NEWS THERE WILL BE NEWS ON THE TRAININGS. THIS IS A COLLABORATIVE THING.
THE STAFF WILL DO THEIR BEST, BUT WE NEED PARENTS AWARE AS WELL. IF WE TAG TEAM THIS, THAT'S HOW
WE WILL WIN IT. >> DR. AVILA -- THANK YOU, DR. DRATI. DR. AVILA, DO WE KNOW THE PERCENTAGE OF PARENTS WHO ATTEND THESE WORKSHOPS? ARE THEY MOSTLY SPANISH-SPEAKING OR
ENGLISH-SPEAKING? >> OUR ATTENDANCE IS I WOULD SAY PRETTY LOW. I THINK THE HIGHEST ONE WE HAVE HAD IS ABOUT 20 FOR SUICIDE PREVENTION.
OF THE 20 I BELIEVE THREE WERE SPANISH SPEAKING AND WE ARE FORTUNATE TO HAVE SARA, OUR DISTRICT TRANSLATOR FOR THESE MEETINGS AND TO BE ABLE TO LISTEN IN AND PARTICIPATE IN
FOOD FORETHOUGHT, DR. DRATI, MAYBE A PODCAST ON IT?
>> YEP. >> AND WE WILL GET YOU A TRANSLATOR TOO. I DID HAVE A QUESTION TO WITH REGARD TO THE INFORMATION THAT MY FELLOW BOARD MEMBER ELHESSEN WAS REQUESTING. ARE WE ABLE TO GET THAT INFORMATION FOR THE BOARD ABOUT HOW MANY DEMOGRAPHICS.
>> WE CAN PROVIDE AN UPDATE IN REGARDS TO THE DISCIPLINES WE HAVE AND SPECIFICALLY REGARDING SUBSTANCES.
AND TO SEE HOW WE CAN BREAK IT DOWN BY DEMOGRAPHICS ALSO.
>> THAT WOULD BE WONDERFUL, THANK YOU.
ANYONE ELSE? >> I HAD A QUESTION.
I WAS JUST WONDERING WITH THOSE MEETINGS AND THE PARENT MEETINGS, ARE THEY RECORDED SO PARENTS CAN GO BACK AND WATCH
THEM AT A LATER DATE? >> THAT'S SOMETHING WE ARE RESEARCHING A LITTLE FURTHER. RIGHT NOW THEY HAVE TO HAVE BEEN LIKED AND WE HAVE TO DO MORE RESEARCH.
>> WE NEED TO GET MORE PARTICIPATION, BUT IF THEY COULD GO BACK AND WATCH THOSE, MAYBE WE WOULD SEE THAT, YOU KNOW, THEY WILL GO BACK AND WATCH THOSE LATER AND AT LEAST THE INFORMATION IS GOING OUT AND THAT'S THE GOAL OF IT.
>> AND PERHAPS USING OUR STUDENTS TO DO THAT WOULD BE A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR THEM TO START GETTING HANDS ON
TRAINING. >> I THINK CAUTION HAS TO BE RAISED IN TERMS OF CONFIDENTIALLY AND SUICIDE PREVENTION AND PARENTS ARE THERE TO SOMETIMES GET ADVICE IF THEY ARE HAVING A TROUBLED CHILD.
I DON'T THINK THEY WOULD WANT THAT VIDEOTAPED.
>> I'M TALKING ABOUT THE PRESENTERS.
THE PRESENTERS AND THE INFORMATION AND NOT THE PEOPLE THAT ARE DOING IT. IT IS THE PRESENTING AND THE INFORMATION GOING OUT. WE ARE SAYING WE DON'T HAVE A LOT OF PARTICIPATION, SO I FEEL LIKE WE NEED TO COLLABORATE AND COME UP WITH SOME IDEAS AND SO THAT WAS JUST AN IDEA.
>> I THINK WE CAN EXPLORE WAYS WE CAN RECORD THE PRESENTATIONS AND KEEP AUDIENCE ATTENDEES MAYBE NOT ON SCREEN.
BUT MAYBE THIS IS SOMETHING WE HAVE TO FURTHER INVESTIGATE HOW
IT CAN BE BEST ACCOMPLISHED. >> THANK YOU DR. AVILA.
STAFF, ANY OTHER LAST COMMENTS? >> JUST THANK YOU, BOARD FOR YOUR SUPPORT. AND THANK YOU TO OUR
PRESENTERS. >> THANK YOU SO MUCH.
[APPLAUSE]. LET'S GO TO PUBLIC HEARINGS.
[01:25:01]
IT IS TIME FOR THE PUBLIC HEARING.>> THERE IS ACTUALLY ONE MORE DISCUSSION ITEM.
>> OH, SO SORRY. THE NEXT ITEM IS EXPENDITURE
LIMIT. >> YES, IT IS THE AUTHORIZATION OF THE EBGSZ PEPPED -- EXPENDITURE LIMITS.
LET ME EXPLAIN. AS THE BOARD CONTINUES IN THE PROCESS OF POLICY REVIEW, DESIRE HAS BEEN EXPRESSED TO REVIEW THE SUPERINTENDENT AUTHORIZE EXPENDITURE LIMITS.
THERE ARE MANY CONTRACTS HANDLED ON A MONTHLY BASIS AND MANY OF THE CONTRACTS REGARD IMMEDIATE ACTION TO ENSURE THERE ARE NO SURPLUS INTERRUPTION TO THE STUDENTS AND EMPLOYEES AND THE DISTRICT. THE CONTRACTS REQUIRE SOME DELIBERATION AND CAREFUL DELIBERATIONS.
IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE BOARD REVIEW AND DISCUSS THE EXPENDITURE LIMIT. YOU HAVE THE DOCUMENTED -- THE DOCUMENT THERE AND COMING TO THE CONCLUSION.
>> IS THIS A BOARD POLICY FOR FUTURE BOARD MEMBERS SO THEY
HAVE CRITERIA? >> THERE MIGHT HAVE BEEN AN OVER SIGHT. YES, THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A BOARD POLICY ATTACHED. MY DEEPEST APOLOGIES.
I WILL HAVE TO PUSH IT THROUGH NEXT MEETING.
WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING IT IN THE NEXT MEETING.
>> WERE YOU REQUESTING -- JUST OUT OF -- CURIOSITY RIGHT NOW, WERE YOU ASKING THE BOARD TO LOOK AT LIMITS RIGHT NOW AS FAR
RIGHT NOW THERE IS NO LIMIT. I THINK THE BOARD MEMBERS WERE INTERESTED IN ESTABLISHING A LIMIT.
THE BOARD POLICY CHANGED. WE SCRIPTED IT AND IT WAS JUST GONNA BE WHATEVER YOU PUT. MY APOLOGIES AND IT IS MY
OVERSIGHT. >> THANK YOU, DR. DRATI.
[12. PUBLIC HEARINGS]
WE WILL NOW MOVE TO PUBLIC HEARINGS.IT IS FOR PUBLIC HEARING ON SUNSHINE INITIAL PROPOSAL CLASSIFIED SCHOOL EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION BELLFLOWER CHAPTER 32. I WILL START BY DECLARING THE PUBLIC OPEN. WOULD ANYONE IN THE PUBLIC LIKE TO SPEAK TO THIS ITEM? IS THERE ANY DISCUSSION FROM THE BOARD? DO I HAVE A MOTION TO CLOSE THE
>> SECOND. >> ROLL CALL PLEASE.
[13. NEW BUSINESS]
>> NEW BUSINESS. DO ANY MEMBERS OF THE BOARD WISH TO ADD NEW BUSINESS ITEM ON A FUTURE AGENDA?
>> I WANTED TO LOOK AT -- WE HAVE BEEN TALKING ABOUT IT FOR AWHILE AND I WOULD LIKE TO REQUEST STAFF PUT TOGETHER AN ORG CHART SO THAT WE CAN REVIEW AND IDENTIFY.
THERE HAS BEEN SO MANY CHANGES OF ADMINISTRATION AND STAFF, AND IT IS HELPFUL AS BOARD MEMBERS TO KNOW WHO IS WHO AND WHERE AND WHAT THEIR FUNCTIONS ARE OPERATIONALLY.
IT IS NOT JUST A TITLE, BUT IT IS FUNCTIONAL DUTIES AND OPERATIONS THEY FALL UNDER. THANK YOU.
>> DR. DRATI, DO WE CURRENTLY HAVE AN UPDATED ORG CHART?
>> WE DO HAVE ONE UNDER SUPERINTENDENT'S SITE.
WE'LL HAVE TO MAKE P -- IT MORE PREVALENT.
IF YOU CLICK ON SUPERINTENDENT YOU WILL SEE THE ORG CHART
THERE. >> IF I GO ON OUR WEBSITE AND CLICK ON SUPERINTENDENT WE WILL FIND THE ORG CHART.
>> YES. >> AND IT IS CURRENT WITH THE
NEW STUFF? >> IT IS THE MOST CURRENT RIGHT
NOW. >> WHEN WAS IT LAST UPDATED? I REMEMBER THAT THERE WAS ONE AND WE SAID THAT WE WERE GOING TO HAVE AN UPDATED ONE BECAUSE IT WASN'T TOO CLEAR THE LAST
ONE WE SAW. >> I BELIEVE WE PUT THIS ONE UP A FEW MONTHS AGO. I WILL HAVE TO LOOK AT AN EXACT DATE. I WILL SAY EVERYBODY IS ASKING FOR ORG CHARTS. THE ONE WE INCLUDED, IT WAS NEVER THERE BEFORE UNTIL I SAID LET'S INCLUDE IT THERE.
[01:30:01]
>> CAN WE MAKE SURE IT IS EASILY ACCESSIBLE.
I HEARD FROM THE COMMUNITY THAT IT IS DIFFICULT TO FIND.
IF WE CAN MAYBE JUST GIVE US A CLICK TREE OF WHERE TO FIND IT AND MAKE SURE IT IS IN AN EASY TO FIND SPOT.
>> ABSOLUTELY. THE ENTIRE WEBSITE IS BEING RE-OVERHAULED. IN NOVEMBER IT IS MORE CLEAR, BUT FOR THE CURRENT SITUATION WE'LL TAKE WHAT IS THERE.
>> AND JUST MAKE A HOME PAGE SOMEWHERE THAT IS EASY TO FIND.
>> I'M REQUESTING A LITTLE MORE DETAIL SO NOT JUST A FRAMEWORK IN REGARDS TO BOARD SUPERINTENDENT.
I REALLY WANT TO SEE FUNCTIONS UNDER EACH AREA.
THAT IS A LITTLE MORE DIFFERENT AND MORE INVOLVED.
I HAVE SEEN THEM BEFORE AND OTHER DISTRICTS HAVE IT.
WHAT EVERYBODY IS WORKING ON RIGHT NOW, WHEN WE SEE THE NEW WEBSITE, YOU WILL SEE EACH -- YOU WILL HAVE THE ORG CHART WITH DIFFERENT PEOPLE, NAMES AND NUMBERS WITHOUT THE DESCRIPTION BECAUSE THAT IS TOO HARD UNLESS WE CREATE A SITUATION IN WHICH WE ARE ABLE TO CLICK ON THE ONE OF THE
I THINK TO BRING IT UP AT A FUTURE MEETING.
YOU ARE PRESENTING IT AS NEW BUSINESS?
>> POINT OF ORDER. REALLY CONFD ABOUT THE NEW BUSINESS.
IS IT JUST THINGS THAT WE ARE DIRECTING YOU GUYS TO DO? I THOUGHT THIS WAS FOR POLICIES YOU WANTED TO GET ON THE AGENDA TO VOTE ON. AM I CONFUSED OR CAN SOMEONE GIVE ME ANOTHER EXPLANATION OR DO WE JUST GET TO SAY I WANT YOU TO DO THIS AND I WANT YOU TO DO THAT.
HOW DOES THIS WORK? >> IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE -- TO WORK THAT A MOTION IS SUPPOSED TO BE BROUGHT UP TO BE DISCUSSED AT A FUTURE BOARD MEETING OR A POLICY TO BE AMENDED. AND THEN A VOTE IS TAKEN AND THE ITEM IS GIVEN AS DIRECTION TO STAFF TO BRING TO A FUTURE
MEETING. >> ASKING FOR AN ORGANIZATIONAL CHART IS NOT A POLICY WE WOULD HAVE IN NEW BUSINESS, CORRECT?
>> YOU CAN ASK AS A MOTION TO BRING UP DISCUSSION FOR A NEW ORGANIZATIONAL CHART AT A FUTURE MEETING AND IT WOULD BE BROUGHT UP UNDER THE DISCUSSION ITEM.
SO A MOTION WOULD BE AN ORDER FOLLOWED BY A VOTE OF THE BOARD TO BRING THAT TO A FUTURE MEETING.
>> SO IN YOU BUSINESS CAN BE A DISCUSSION ITEM OR A POLICY?
>> IT CAN BE A DISCUSSION ITEM, ACTION ITEM, ANYTHING THAT A BOARD MEMBER WANTS TO BRING UP AT A FUTURE AGENDA ITEM.
>> SO ANYTHING WE WANT TO TALK ABOUT?
>> THANK YOU, GENERAL COUNSEL. >> SO I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A MOTION AT THIS POINT THAT THE BOARD LOOK AT REVISING OUR ORG
REVISING THE ORG CHART MEANING -- THERE IS SOMETHING CALLED REORGANIZATION MEETING WHEN I DO AN OVER -- AN OVER HAUL AND JOB DESCRIPTION CHAIN -- CHANGES.
THAT'S A LONG PROCESS. OR ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT THE CURRENT STRUCTURE WITH THE NAMES.
WHEN YOU SAY WE WANT TO DISCUSS IT, A NEW ORGANIZE CHART, THAT IS A QUESTION THAT HAS TO GO THROUGH A WHOLE CHANGE
ORGANIZATIONAL DYNAMICS. >> SOME MEMBERS SAY I DON'T
KNOW WHAT DR. AVILA DOES. >> OH THE CHART, THE
ORGANIZATIONAL CHART. >> SEE WHAT I'M SAYING? IT WILL OUTLINE HE COVERS THIS AREAS IN STUDENT SERVICES.
BONNIE DOES THIS AND IN THESE AREAS.
FOR EXAMPLE DENA, SHE IS IN I.T. AND WHAT AREAS DOES SHE COVER IN I.T. IT IS JUST THAT.
>> IF YOU DON'T KNOW T YOU CAN LOOK IT UP.
>> I DON'T KNOW IF WE NEED A DISCUSSION ON THAT.
YOU ARE JUST TELLING THE SUPERINTENDENT TO GET AN ORG CHART UP THERE. I I DON'T THINK YOU NEED A
DISCUSSION. >> POINT OF ORDER, ARE WE NOW DISCUSSING WHAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE ON THE AGENDA AND ARE WE DOING THIS THE RIGHT WAY BECAUSE AGAIN I AM STILL
CONFUSED. >> COUNCIL, PLEASE, THANK YOU.
>> CLARIFICATION ON STAFF AS TO THE DIRECTION OF THE DISCUSSION THAT WILL BE BROUGHT UP AT THE NEXT MEETING IS ACCEPTABLE, BUT ACTUALLY DISCUSSING WHAT ACTION TO TAKE ON THE ITEM WOULD NOT
BE APPROPRIATE TO NEW BUSINESS. >> THANK YOU.
>> IS THERE A MOTION TO BRING UP THE ORGANIZATIONAL CHART FOR
I AM TOTALLY CONFUSED AT THIS INTEREST PO.
I JUST INTRODUCED IT AND STARTED GETTING QUESTIONS.
AND THEN DR. DRATI WAS ASKING QUESTIONS SO WHERE ARE WE?
>> A MOTION WAS MADE AND NEEDS A SECOND AND FOLLOWED BY A VOTE TO BRING IT UP AS A DISCUSSION ITEM ON A FUTURE AGENDA.
>> SECOND. >> ROLL CALL PLEASE.
>> MR. CRIHFIELD. >> I'M SORRY.
CAN YOU REPEAT THE MOTION? >> THE MOTION THAT WE HAVE ON THE FLOOR, I BELIEVE, AND CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG, STAFF,
[01:35:01]
IS TO BRING UP THE ORGANIZATIONAL CHART FORDISCUSSION ON OUR NEXT AGENDA. >> OKAY.
>> I. >> ANY OTHER NEW BUSINESS?
>> YES, MADAM PRESIDENT. I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A MOTION THAT WE BRING FOR A FUTURE DISCUSSION THE CREATION OF A BELLFLOWER UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT FOUNDATION.
THE MATTER REQUIRES DETAILED DISCUSSION REGARDING FORMATION AND OPERATION AS SUCH FOR DELIBERATION WOULD BE AN APPROPRIATE AND NECESSARY ACT GIVEN THAT WE ARE THE BODY THAT
DECIDES THOSE DETAILS. >> SECOND.
>> ROLL CALL PLEASE. >> MS. ARMSTRONG.
>> I. ANY OTHER ITEMS FOR NEW BUSINESS? HEARING NONE I BELIEVE
[14. MAJOR ACTION]
DR. DRATI, LET'S MOVE TO MAJOR ACTION.>> THE NEXT IS CSBA CONTRACT BOARD 360 SELF-EVALUATION WORKSHOP. DO WE HAVE INFORMATION ON THIS
THE APPROVAL IN THE CSBA CONTRACT BOARD 360 SELF-EVALUATION TO BE CONDUCTED ON TPOF -- NOVEMBER 11TH IS THE CONTRACTED WITH CSBA. THE CONCEPT IS TO ON NOVEMBER 11TH I THINK I HAVE BEEN AGREEMENT TO BE ABLE TO ESTABLISH THE MEETING AT THAT TIME.
SO IT WILL GO FROM 9:00 TO 3:00.
THERE WILL BE LUNCH AND BREAKFAST.
IT IS A WORKSHOP TO HELP US DELIBERATE ABOUT THE FUNCTIONS OF THE BOARD AND HOW WE WORK TOGETHER AND ALL THAT.
FOR EXAMPLE, SOME OF THE QUESTIONS ABOUT NEW BUSINESS AND HOW WE CONDUCT BUSINESS WILL BE ADDRESSED AT THAT TIME.
THE HOPE IS WE COME OUT WITH CLARITY AROUND HOW WE BEST WORK TOGETHER AND WITH EACH OTHER AND WITH STAFF AND SO ON.
THIS IS A CONTRACT AGREEMENT WE HAVE WITH CSBA TO CONDUCT THE
EVENT. >> DO WE HAVE QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS FROM THE BOARD? BOARD MEMBER ARMSTRONG?
>> MY QUESTION IS THIS TRAINING FROM CSBA, WHILE THEY PROVIDE GUIDANCE, MY QUESTION IS ARE WE GOING TO BE RECEPTIVE TO WHAT CSBA HAS TO SAY SINCE WE ARE THE BOARD AND THEY AREN'T.
WE WILL -- WILL WE RESPECT CSBA ENOUGH TO RECEIVE THE INFORMATION? CSBA, THEY HAVE A LOT OF STUFF IN ORDER FOR BOARDS TO USE. I'M BRINGING IT UP BECAUSE SOMETIMES WHEN WE SAY CSBA IT'S BROUGHT UP THAT OH WELL AT CSBA WE ARE THE BOARD AND WE DON'T HAVE TO DO WHAT THEY SAY DO.
SO WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO REALLY COMMIT AND ESPECIALLY IF WE ARE SPEND -- SPENDING THE MONEY AND TIME TO RESPECT CSBA ENOUGH TO BE RECEPTIVE TO THE TRAINING.
THAT'S ALL. >> THANK YOU, BOARD MEMBER ARMSTRONG. BOARD MEMBER ELHESSEN?
>> YEAH. I WAS AGREEING WITH MS. ARMSTRONG. IF WE DON'T WANT TO USE THEIR POLICIES, THEN ARE WE GOING TO FOLLOW THROUGH WITH THEIR BOARD
GOVERNANCE GUIDELINES? >> THANK YOU, BOARD MEMBER ELHESSEN. BOARD MEMBER STEWART?
>> I THINK WE VOTED FOR IT SO IT SOUNDS LIKE WE WOULD BE RECEPTIVE FOR IT. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
>> THANK YOU, BOARD MEMBER STEWART.
BOARD MEMBER CRIHFIELD? >> JUST TO THOSE POINTS BECAUSE I SEE WHAT YOU ARE GETTING AT. WHEN WE TALK ABOUT CSBA IT IS IMPORTANT TO IDENTIFY RESPECT -- RESPECTING AND BEING RECEPTIVE, BUT ALSO UNDERSTANDING THAT THEY DON'T MAKE THE DECISION OF THE BOARD, BUT BEING RECEPTIVE OF IT, I THINK IT IS EVIDENT THAT WE ALL DO.
EVEN JUST GOING -- I AM ACTUALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO THE
NEXT CSBA CONFERENCE. >> ABSOLUTELY.
>> A LOT OF VALUABLE INFORMATION.
I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO HEAR FROM THE LADY AND TALKING I WAS VERY IMPRESSED. I DO HAVE ONE QUESTION.
IS THIS GOING TO BE IN TANDEM WITH THE SUPERINTENDENT
[01:40:02]
EVALUATION? I KNOW THAT WAS IN THETHE SUPERINTENDENT EVALUATION WILL OCCUR ON THAT DAY, BUT WE HAVE A CONTRACT TO HELP FACILITATE THE PROCESS FOR THE
SUPERINTENDENT AS WELL. >> THAT IS A SEPARATE CONTRACT?
>> THE TWO GO HAND IN HAND. IN ORDER TO EVALUATE THE WORKER SUPERINTENDENT YOU HAVE TO BE ON THE SAME PAGE.
>> WE'RE GETTING THERE. >> I'M FOR IT, BUT I DO THINK THAT WOULD BE VALUABLE AND I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO DOING IT
THANK YOU BOARD MEMBER CRIHFIELD.
I WANT TO REMIND THE BOARD THAT WE GO AROUND AND TAKE TURNS SO THAT WAY EVERYBODY HAS A TURN TO BE HEARD.
IF IT IS NOT OUR TURN TO PLEASE KEEP YOUR COMMENTS TO YOURSELF UNTIL I GO BACK AND I GIVE YOU ANOTHER TURN.
WITH THAT SAID, I WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT I ADDRESSED SOME OF THE CONCERNS BROUGHT UP TONIGHT IT IS TRUE THAT I HAVE BROUGHT THAT UP, AND THAT IS JUST ME BECAUSE I AGREE WITH WHAT BOARD MEMBER CRIHFIELD IS SAYING. WE DO NEED TO MAKE DECISIONS ON OUR OWN. THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT WE DO NOT TAKE THE GUIDANCE OF CSBA. WE ACCEPT IT AND THEN WE MAKE THOSE DECISIONS. I STILL STAND BY THAT STATEMENT. I INVITE BOARD MEMBER ELHESSEN AND BOARD MEMBER ARMSTRONG, IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO HAVE A CONVERSATION AND SEE EXACTLY WHERE I STAND AND I CAN GIVE YOU SOME MORE CLARIFICATION ABOUT THAT, WE CAN GO AHEAD AND MAKE THAT DECISION OURSELVES AND SET A TIME.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH. WE WILL NOW -- ANYMORE STAFF?
>> EXCUSE ME. I JUST WANT TO RESPOND.
I WANT TO SAY THANK YOU FOR MAKING IT VERY CLEAR.
I WASN'T CLEAR HOW YOU STOOD. I WAS NOT TRYING TO HIT YOU AND MAKE YOU HOLLER. I JUST WANT YOU TO KNOW BECAUSE IT IS AN ORGANIZATION THAT IS THERE FOR OUR TAKING.
THAT WAS MY MOTIVE. I WANT TO GO.
CSBA DOES A LOT AND WE ALL KNOW THAT.
THANK YOU FOR BEING VERY CLEAR. THANK YOU.
>> AND I HAVE A COMMENT. I WOULD LIKE TO THANK YOU FOR RESPECTING THEM AND UNDERSTANDING THAT JUST BECAUSE WE DISAGREE ON ONE THING THAT CSBA SAYS OR RECOMMENDS THAT -- DOES NOT MEAN THAT WE DISAGREE WITH EVERYTHING CSBA DOES AND WE CAN DIFFERENTIATE BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT THINGS WE ARE TALKING ABOUT WHICH IS POLICIES AND A BOARD SELF-EVALUATION.
THANK YOU, PRESIDENT GARZA, FOR ACKNOWLEDGING THAT.
>> THANK YOU, BOARD MEMBERS. ROLE -- ROLL CALL PLEASE.
>> MAKE THE MOTION. >> SECOND.
>> AND NOW ROLL CALL. >> MS. ARMSTRONG.
>> I. WE NOW MOVE TO THE CONSENT
[15. CONSENT AGENDA]
AGENDA. DO ANY MEMBERS OF THE BOARD HAVE ANY REQUESTS TO WITHHOLD ANY AGENDA ITEMS THIS EVENING?>> I WOULD LIKE TO WITHHOLD 15.3 AND 15.14.
>> BOARD MEMBER ELHESSEN? >> NO.
>> BOARD MEMBER STEWART? >> NO.
>> BOARD MEMBER CRIHFIELD? >> NO.
>> AND I HAVE NONE WITHHOLDING AS WELL.
DO I HAVE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA EXCEPT FOR THE ITEMS 15.3 AND 15.4 WHICH HAVE BEEN PULLED FOR SEPARATE
>> SECOND. >> I HAVE A MOTION BY BOARD MEMBER CRIHFIELD AND SECONDED BY BOARD MEMBER STEWART.
QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? ROLL CALL PLEASE.
>> GOING BACK TO THE ITEMS PULLED FOR SEPARATE CONSIDERATION, FIRST AGENDA ITEM IS 15.3.
DID HAS -- IT HAS BEEN PULLED BY BOARD MEMBER ARMSTRONG.
DO I HAVE A MOTION ON THIS ITEM?
>> I HAVE A MOTION BY BOARD MEMBER STEWART AND A SECOND BY BOARD MEMBER ARMSTRONG. BOARD MEMBER ARMSTRONG, WHAT
[01:45:05]
ARE YOUR COMMENTS OR CONCERNS? >> I JUST HAVE A FEW QUESTIONS.
ON 15.13, CAN YOU EXPLAIN TO ME THE BIG JUMP IN THE COST FOR THE MINE EDUCATION AND I AM TALKING ABOUT THE MINE EDUCATION OR THE MINE INSTITUTE WORKSHOP AND TUTORING.
IT IS SUCH A BIG JUMP. >> I DON'T THINK THAT IS THE RIGHT ONE. ARE WE ON PAGE 2?
>> MS. ARMSTRONG WERE YOU PULLING 15.3 OR 15.13? I BELIEVE YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT 15.13.
>> THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT RIGHT NOW.
>> IT WAS IFIVE TEEN -- 15.13 I BELIEVE YOU WANTED TO PULL.
>> ON THE RECORD IT WAS 15.3 AND 15.4, BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE --
>> I SAID 3 AND 4? >> THAT'S OKAY.
>> GEE WILLIKERS. >> SHE DID SAY 15.3 AND 15.14 ON THE RECORD, BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE IT IS 15.13 AND 15.14.
THAT'S WHAT I MEANT. IT IS THESE PAGES RIGHT HERE.
>> THANK YOU FOR THE CLARIFICATION.
>> DO WE NEED TO GO BACK? >> SO THERE WOULD BE A NEED FOR A MOTION TO RECONSIDER ITEM 15.13 AND YOU CAN DO A MOTION
TO PASS ITEM 15-POINT 3. >> HAVE I A MOTION -- I HAVE A
MOTION TO PASS 15.3. >> SECOND.
>> ROLL CALL. >> MS. ARMSTRONG.
RECONSIDER 15.13. >> ROLL CALL PLEASE.
>> SO NOW GOING BACK TO THE ITEMS PULLED FOR SEPARATE
[15.13 AMENDMENT TO THE ANNUAL CONTRACT LISTING AND AGREEMENTS 2023-2024 FISCAL YEAR]
CONSIDERATION, FIRST ITEM IS 15.13 WHICH HAS BEEN PULLED BY BOARD MEMBER ARMSTRONG. DO I HAVE A MOTION ON THE ITEM?>> I HAVE A MOTION BY BOARD MEMBER ARMSTRONG AND A SECOND BY BOARD MEMBER CRIHFIELD. SORRY.
A MOTION BY BOARD MEMBER CRIHFIELD AND A SECOND BY BOARD MEMBER ARMSTRONG. BOARD MEMBER ARMSTRONG, WHAT
ARE YOUR COMMENTS AND CONCERNS? >> THANK YOU.
AND AGAIN I APOLOGIZE. I REALLY THOUGHT I SAID THE NUMBERS RIGHT, BUT OH WELL. I JUST ADD -- HAD A FEW QUESTIONS. I SEE SUCH A BIG JUMP IN THE -- FOR THE RENEWAL. I KNOW IT HAS TO BE SOMETHING AMAZING. I JUST NEED TO KNOW WHAT IS
GOING ON. >> FOR THE MITE INSTITUTE IT IS NOT A RENEWAL, BUT IT IS ADDITIONAL SERVICES.
IT IS UP $855,000. IT IS LOOKING AT AFTER SCHOOL AND SUMMERTIME SMALL-GROUP TUTORING WHICH WOULD BE DELIVERED BY THE MIND INSTITUTE AND ACTUAL TEACHERS LIKE ON ZOOM WITH SMALL GROUPS OF STUDENTS.
>> MOSTLY DURING THE SUMMER? >> AFTER SCHOOL AND --
>> AFTER SCHOOL? >> IT WILL BE PART OF THE THINK TOGETHER PROGRAM AND PART OF THE SUMMER ENRICHMENT LEARNING
OPPORTUNITIES PROGRAM. >> OKAY.
IS THIS SOMETHING THAT IS GOING TO BE MONITORED BY THE PARENTS?
>> NO. I AM NOT SURE -- I SEE WHAT YOU ARE SAYING. THAT'S PART OF THE RENEWAL AND WE HAVE HAD PARENT EDUCATION WORKSHOPS ALREADY THIS YEAR.
THAT WAS PART OF THE PREVIOUS CONTRACT THAT WE HAD WITH THEM.
AS FAR AS MONITORING, THAT'S GOING TO BE DONE DURING THE THINK TOGETHER PROGRAM BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL AND DURING
SUMMER. >> JUST TO BE CLEAR, THE PEOPLE IN THE THINK TOGETHER PROGRAM, THEY ARE THE ONES PROVIDING
>> THAT'S ST MASS. THAT'S GG, THE PENGUIN.
>> OKAY, THANKS. >> DO WE HAVE ANY OTHER PROGRAMS THAT IS DOING THIS LIKE RIGHT NOW?
[01:50:05]
IS THIS BEING DUPLICATED OR THIS JUST -->> NOT RIGHT NOW. WE HAVE INTER SREPGSS.
WE HAVE INTERVENTIONS. OUR TEACHERS ARE USING IT WITH OUR STUDENTS. AS FAR AS TARGETED TUTORING WITH THE CERTIFIED TEACHER ONLINE USING THEIR CURRICULUM, WE ARE NOT DOING THAT RIGHT NOW.
>> ARE SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS BENEFITING FROM THIS?
>> ANY STUDENTS INVOLVED IN THINK TOGETHER OR AFTER SCHOOL AND SUMMER LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES.
LOVING IT. >> BOARD MEMBER ELHESSEN?
QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? >> IT WAS CLARIFIED.
>> I'M SORRY. >> BOARD MEMBER STEWART?
>> I HAVE A RECOMMENDATION. WE HAVE OUR AGENDA AND IT SAYS 15.4, BUT IT IS SO HARD TO FIND IN OUR BOOKS.
I AM SEARCHING AND SEARCHING. IS THERE A WAY TO NUMBER PAGES OR PUT IT AT THE TOP SO WE CAN FIND IT ON THE DYE -- DIOSCE.
IT IS HARD FOR ME TO FIND THINGS ON THE SPOT?
JUST BRINGING THAT UP. >> BOARD MEMBER CRIHFIELD.
>> THANK YOU, MADAM PRESIDENT. I HAVE ONE QUESTION.
I KNOW YOU MENTIONED IT IS UP TO $ -- 855,000.
SOME OF THE CONTRACTS HAVE A NOT TO EXCEED.
WHY DOES THAT HAVE NOT TO EXCEED? IS THERE A DIFFERENCE PUTTING THEM ON THE CHART WHICH ONE YOU WOULD PUT NOT TO EXCEED AND WHICH ONES YOU WOULDN'T?
>> NO. IT IS HOW THE DEPARTMENT HAS SUBMITTED IT. WHAT IT WOULD MEAN IS THAT BASICALLY YOU COULDN'T EXSIDE THAT AMOUNT -- EXCEED THAT AMOUNT BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT IS GIVEN APPROVAL FOR.
>> SO NOT TO EXCEED SHOULD BE PUT ON ALL OF THEM.
>> UNLESS YOU HAVE A SET AMOUNT THE CON -P TRACT WILL BE.
-- CONTRACT WILL BE. >> IF WE GO ABOVE IT WE WILL HAVE CONTRACT AMENDMENTS, RIGHT?
>> THAT IS CORRECT. >> THANK YOU.
>> THANK YOU. >> I HAVE NO QUESTIONS MYSELF.
MY QUESTIONS HAVE BEEN ANSWERED BY STAFF.
YES. >> PRESIDENT GARZA, I HAVE ONE MORE QUESTION. CONCERNED ABOUT THIS, HOW IS THIS BEING FUNDED? IS THIS COMING FROM THE GENERAL
FUND? >> THIS IS COMING FROM OUR
ESSER FUNDS OR CARE FUNDS. >> OH WE HAVE TO SPEND THAT.
HOW DO WE ASSESS WHETHER OR NOT THIS IS REALLY WORKING THOUGH?
AND THEN WE'LL BE DONE. >> WE ARE LOOKING AT THE KIDDOS THAT WE ARE UTILIZING THIS WITH.
WE ARE LOOKING AT OUR NWBA SCORES TO TARGET OUR STUDENTS AND WE CAN SEE THE PROGRESS IN THE FUTURE NWA SCORES.
>> THANK YOU. >> ANYMORE QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? HEARING NONE, ROLL CALL.
>> THE NEXT ITEM PULLED FOR SEPARATE CONSIDERATION IS
[15.14 AMENDMENT TO THE ANNUAL LISTING - MULTI-YEAR CONTRACT AND AGREEMENTS – 2023-2024 FISCAL YEAR]
AGENDA ITEM 15.14 AND PULLED BY BOARD MEMBER ARMSTRONG.IS THERE A MOTION ON THE ITEM? >> SO MOVED.
>> SECOND. >> HAVE I A MOTION BY -- I HAVE A MOTION BY BOARD MEMBER ARMSTRONG AND A SECOND BY BOARD MEMBER CRIHFIELD. BOARD MEMBER ARMSTRONG?
MOTIONED BY BOARD MEMBER STEWART AND A SECOND BY BOARD
MEMBER CRIHFIELD. >> THIS IS THE ONE THAT SAYS THE FOCUS CARE. IT SAYS FOCUS CARE PROVIDING ONLINE TARGET TUTORING BY CREDENTIALED TEACHERS FOR K-12 STUDENTS. MY QUESTION IS PRETTY MUCH THE SAME THING. DO WE NEED THAT?
[01:55:04]
>> THIS IS GOING TO BE TARGETED TOWARD OUR 5TH TO 8TH GRADE STUDENTS. SO WE ARE LOOKING MORE AT OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL. WE ARE ALSO IN THIS ONE LOOKINE ON ONE AND NOT SMALL GROUP TUTORING.
IT IS MORE INTENSIVE. IT IS BASED ON THE NWEA SCORES AGAIN. THEY ARE LOOKING AT THE GAPS THAT OUR STUDENTS HAVE TO TRY TO FILL THOSE GAPS.
AGAIN, AFTER SCHOOL AND IT IS DURING SUMMER.
>> AFTER SCHOOL AND DURING SUMMER.
THE REASON I AM ASKING IS BECAUSE, I KNOW I HAVE MY KIDS, AND I CAN REMEMBER MY ONE STUDENT -- MY ONE DAUGHTER WAS TALKING ABOUT SHE WAS HAVING DIFFICULTY WITH MATH AND WAS ASKING THE QUESTIONS OVER AND OVER TO TRY TO GET CLAIRE TPAU -- CLARIFICATION. THE TEACHER TOLD HER TO GO TO THE PAPER TUTORING. SHE'S LIKE, I'M KA -- ASKING A TEACHER. I DON'T WANT HER TO SEND ME TO PAPER TUTORING. I WANT TO MAKE SURE WE HAVE THESE SUPPLEMENTAL SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS, BUT WE NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT THE TEACHERS DO THEIR DUE DILIGENCE TO HELP THE STUDENTS AND NOT JUST SAY YOU HAVE THIS ONLINE RESOURCE.
ARE THE TEACHERS GONNA KNOW ABOUT THIS PROGRAM TO EVEN HELP THE KIDS FACILITATE, HEY, THIS IS THE BEST I CAN DO.
YOU CAN PRACTICE. IT COULD HAVE JUST BEEN THE EXCHANGE. I WANT THE TEACHERS TO BE SENSITIVE TO THE STUDENTS IF THEY ARE NOT SO COMFORTABLE.
>> AND THERE IS A LITTLE DIFFERENCE AS WELL.
BOTH OF THESE PROGRAMS ARE GOING TO BE USED DURING AFTER
SCHOOL AND SUMMERTIME. >> OKAY.
>> SO WHAT I HEAR YOU SAYING IS THAT IF THESE PROGRAMS WERE USED DURING THE SCHOOL DAY WITH OUR TEACHERS, THEN, YES, THEY WOULD BE INVOLVED IN THAT DISCUSSION.
THEY WOULD KNOW THE BEST PRACTICES FOR UTILIZING THE PROGRAM DURING THE SCHOOL DAY. THAT'S NOT WHAT THIS IS GOING TO BE RIGHT NOW. THIS IS A MORE HIGHLY QUALIFIED PERSON IN THE AFTER SCHOOL AND SUMMER ENRICHMENT TIME HELPING
WITH THE TUTORING OF MATH. >> ACTUALLY THAT IS A GREAT IDEA. WE ARE REALLY BEEFING UP --
>> TRYING. >> -- SCHOOL AND SUMMERTIME ENRICHMENT. THANK YOU.
>> LET ME JUST ADD THOUGH. I KNOW YOU MENTIONED HOW DO WE KNOW HOW EFFECTIVE THIS PROGRAM IS.
WE ARE OBVIOUSLY GOING TO SEE HOW THE STUDENTS ARE GAINING AFTER THEY LOOK AT THE NWBE RESULTS.
ONE OF THE THINGS I WILL ASK MRS. CARTER TO MONITOR IS THE COORDINATION BETWEEN THE HANDOFF BETWEEN THE SCHOOL AND THE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM. SO FOR EXAMPLE THE NWEA RESULTS ARE A RESPONSIBILITY OF THE DISTRICT STAFF AND THE TEACHERS AND SO ON WHEN THERE IS A NEED TO BE IDENTIFIED THERE.
IF YOU SAY, HEY, GO OVER HERE AND MAKE SURE YOU CATCH UP ON THIS. IT IS NOT JUST A DISCONNECTED YOU GO TO TUTORING HERE WHILE WE LEARN OVER HERE.
IT IS CONNECTED. THE BRIDGE IS THE NWEA RESULTS.
WE NEED TO MAKE SURE WE COMMUNICATE BETWEEN -- ONCE WE GET THE RESULTS FROM THE STAFF TO THE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM.
IF WE GET TO THAT POINT AND THERE IS A HANDOFF AND THERE IS THAT COORDINATION, THAT'S WHEN IT WILL EXCEL THE WAY WE WANT IT TO EXCEL. IT WILL EXCEL ALREADY, BUT
MORE. >> THAT REALLY ANSWERS BECAUSE IT IS DISTINCTIVE. IT IS AFTER SCHOOL AND SUMMER.
ABOUT HOW MANY KIDS ARE -- ABOUT A PERCENTAGE -- I AM LOVING THIS. ABOUT HOW MANY KIDS ARE IN OUR AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM AND OUR SUMMER PROGRAM?
IS IT 25%? >> I HAVE TO GET YOU THAT INFORMATION. WE TYPICALLY HAVE THAT, BUT OUR AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMS, GREAT NEWS, HAS GROWN A LOT THIS YEAR ACTUALLY. YOU CAN SEE THAT IN THE CONTRACT MATRIX AND WE HAVE HAD TO INKRAOEGS STAFFING AT -- INCREASE STAFFING AT SIX SITES. I DON'T WANT TO GIVE YOU A NUMBER BECAUSE I LEARNED ONCE THE FIRST THING YOU LEARN IS WHAT STICKS AND SO I DON'T WANT TO GIVE YOU WRONG INFORMATION.
I WILL PUT IT IN THE FRIDAY MEMO HOW MANY KIDDOS WE HAVE.
>> ONE THING IS FOR SURE IS WE WILL GET OUR MONEY'S WORTH.
>> ABSOLUTELY. >> AND TO DR. DRATI'S POINT WE HAVE LIAISONS THAT ARE TEACHERS THAT IS A LIAISON THAT WORKS
[02:00:06]
WITH OUR DISTRICT STAFF AND THINK TOGETHER TO HELP WITH THAT COORDINATION. HE IS ABSOLUTELY RIGHT.IT IS ENSURING THAT STUDENTS KNOW THE PURPOSE FOR IT AND HELPING US UNDERSTAND THE GAPS WE HAVE SO THEY CAN HELP FILL THEM SO WE CAN GET GOOD INFORMATION TO PROVIDE THE RESOURCES AND INTERVENTIONS THEY NEED.
>> I ABSOLUTELY APPRECIATE IT AND THANK YOU SO MUCH.
>> THANK YOU, BOARD MEMBER ARMSTRONG.
BOARD MEMBER ELHESSEN? >> ANSWERED, THANK YOU.
>> BOARD MEMBER STEWART? >> YEAH.
I HAVE A FEW QUESTIONS. I KNOW WHEN THE QUESTION WAS ASKED OF WHO RUNS THIS AND SUPPORTS THIS, THEY ARE GOING TO THE THINK TOGETHER PROGRAM FOR THIS CORRECT?
>> STUDENTS WHO ATTEND THE THINK TOGETHER PROGRAM AFTER
SCHOOL. >> ARE THEY GOING AS A GROUP? I KNOW WE ARE PAYING THINK TOGETHER TO DO ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES AND THINGS LIKE THAT.
ARE WE PAYING THEM TO SIT AND WATCH THESE KIDS ONLINE, OR IF THEY WANT TO USE IT OR IS THE WHOLE GROUP GOING OR HOW IS
THAT WORKING? >> GOOD QUESTION.
NO. THEY WILL HAVE TIME IN THE THINK TOGETHER SCHEDULE. OUR STAFF MEMBER, MS. SWANSON, HAS BEEN WORKING WITH THE THINK TOGETHER STAFF TO LOOK AT THEIR SCHEDULE SO WE HAVE DESIGNATED TIMES WHERE ALL STUDENTS WILL BE PART OF IT. IT WILL NOT BE AN OPTIONAL PIECE OF THE THINK TOGETHER PROGRAM.
IT WILL BE TIED IN WITH ALL OF THE OTHER THINGS THEY ARE
AWESOME. MY NEXT QUESTION IS AGAIN CAN WE RECEIVE DATA AS WELL WHEN THEY GET THAT DATA OF HOW MANY USERS ARE USING IT AND THINGS LIKE THAT.
>> THANK YOU, BOARD MEMBER STEWART.
BOARD MEMBER CRIHFIELD? >> NO ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS.
>> THANK YOU. >> I HAVE A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS. IT SAYS HERE THAT TUTORING WILL BE PROVIDED BY CREDENTIAL TEACHERS FOR K-12.
ARE THESE OUR CREDENTIALED TEACHERS RIGHT NOW IN OUR
OUR TEACHERS AND OUR SCHOOLS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PROVIDE AFTER SCHOOL INTERVENTION TO OUR STUDENTS.
HOWEVER, THESE ARE CREDENTIALED TEACHERS IN THE STMASS AND FEV
PLATFORM. >> SO ARE OUR CREDENTIALED TEACHERS, DO THEY HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO MAYBE PARTICIPATE IN THIS PROGRAM TO GIVE THE TUTORING?
>> I THINK I NEED CLAIRE FEE ON THAT -- CLARITY ON THAT QUESTION. WHAT DO YOU MEAN?
>> YOU ARE SAYING OUR CREDENTIALED TEACHERS HAVE AN OPTION TO GIVE TUTORING ON THEIR OWN CAMPUS?
>> THEY HAVE THE ABILITY TO PROVIDE INTERVENTION AT THEIR SCHOOL SITE AFTER SCHOOL. THAT WOULD BE A SITE-BASED DECISION. THEY WOULD TALK TO THEIR
PRINCIPAL ABOUT HAVING THAT. >> SO THEN OUR TEACHERS -- OUR CREDENTIALED TEACHERS ARE NOT INVOLVED WITH THIS PROGRAM AT
ALL? >> THEY ARE NOT PART OF THE STMASS OR FEV PROGRAM. NO.
>> HAVE WE DECIDED WHAT WE ARE GOING TO DO IF WE HAVE MORE STUDENTS THAN THE CREDENTIALED TEACHERS PROVIDED?
>> THAT'S THE FIRST QUESTION I ASKED.
THEY HAVE ASSURED US -- I SAID WHAT IF I NEED 100 AT ONE TIME.
THEY SAID THEY CAN MEET THAT CAPACITY.
>> GREAT. >> I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE IT.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR EVERYTHING YOU HAVE DONE TO PUT THIS TOGETHER. ANYONE ELSE QUESTIONS OR
COMMENTS? >> I JUST HAVE A FOLLOW-UP QUESTION. IF THE TEACHERS ARE DOING THIS AFTER SCHOOL TUTORING, IS IT ALWAYS ELOP OR ARE WE USING DIFFERENT FUNDING AND THEY ARE PAID DIFFERENTLY? HOW IS THAT WORKING AT EACH SITE?
>> IT DEPENDS ON WHAT IS BEING PROVIDED.
AT THE SITE LEVEL THEY ARE GOING TO MORE THAN LIKELY USE THE SUPPLEMENTAL CONCENTRATION FUNDING FOR AFTER SCHOOL INTERVENTION. FOR EXPANDED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES PROGRAM WHICH IS THE THINK TOGETHER PROGRAM AND THE SUMMER PROGRAM, WE UTILIZE EXPANDED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
GRANT FUNDING. >> I KNOW WITH THE ELOP FUNDING RIGHT NOW, WOULD IT BE WISE TO NOT USE THOSE FUNDS AND USE THE ELOP FUNDS BECAUSE THEY CAN BE USED FOR INTERVENTION ENRICHMENT. DO YOU KNOW WHAT I'M ASKING?
>> I THINK I NEED CLARITY ON THAT, BUT I WANT TO ADD ONE PIECE BECAUSE IT MAY ANSWER YOUR QUESTION.
FOR EXAMPLE, THIS FUNDING HERE WHEN BOARD MEMBER ARMSTRONG ASKED HOW IT IS FUNNELEDDED, IT IS THROUGH ESSER FUNDS.
WE UTILIZE THOSE FUNDS BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT GOING TO BE AROUND BY 2024. WE WILL UTILIZE THOSE FUNDS FIRST. IF IT IS A SUCCESSFUL PROGRAM AND PLATFORM AND WE WANT TO CONTINUE IT, THEN WE LOOK AT USING EXPANDED LEARNING GRANT FUNDING FOR IT THE FOLLOWING
[02:05:01]
>> DOES THAT ANSWER YOUR QUESTION?
>> KIND OF. ELOP FUNDS CAN BE USED FOR DIFFERENT THINGS AND TUTORING AND INTERVENTION IS SOMETHING WE WANT TO GET OUR SCORES UP. I AM WONDERING WHY WE ARE NOT UTILIZING THOSE AS TINNER SREPBGS AND TUTORING AT DIFFERENT SITES AND USING THE CONCENTRATION FUNDING.
WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OF USING EITHER ONE OR --
>> EVERY SITE HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE STUDENTS IN THE AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM AND THINK TO BE PART OF THE PROGRAM. IF A SCHOOL SITE DECIDES TO PROVIDE A DIFFERENT INTERVENTION AND NOT THIS MASS INTERVENTION, BUT SOME OTHER INTERVENTION, MAYBE IT IS A FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS, WORD STUDY INTERVENTION, THEY WILL UTILIZE THEIR SUPPLEMENTAL AND CONCENTRATION FUNDING FOR THAT.
>> WE TALKED ABOUT GETTING OUR TEACHERS INVOLVED IN TUTORING WITH THEIR OWN KIDS, SO THEY WOULD USE THOSE FUNDS.
>> THANK YOU, BOARD MEMBERS. CAN WE HAVE ROLL CALL PLEASE.
[16. INFORMATION ITEMS]
>> THANK YOU. WE HAVE MOVED TO INFORMATIONAL ITEMS. DOES THE BOARD HAVE ANY QUESTIONS? IT IS REGARDING THE INFORMATIONAL ITEMS THIS EVENING.
HEARING NONE THE BOARD WILL NOT BE GOING BACK TO CLOSED SESSION. IF THERE IS NO OBJECTION, THIS MEETING IS ADJOURNED AT 8:04 UNTIL THE SPECIAL BOARD MEETING TO BE HELD ON THURSDAY, OCTOBE. AT THIS TIME THE BOARD -- HAVE A NICE EVENI
