THE TOPICS DISCUSSED IN CLOSED SESSION WERE STUDENT MATTERS, PENDING LITIGATION AND ANTICIPATED LITIGATION.
THE BOARD TOOK ACTION DURING CLOSED SESSION TO APPROVE THE SETTLEMENT IN THE MATTER OF SANCHEZ VERSUS BUSD DISTRICT COURT CASE. IT WAS A UNANIMOUS DECISION AND THE TERMS ARE OUTLINE IN THE SETTLEMENT AGREEMENT.
THANK YOU. >> REPLACE OF PAGES FOR AGENDA ITEMS 10.3.1.2, 10.3.1.3, 10.3.1.4, 10.3.1.5, AND 10.3.1.6 ARE ON THE BACK TABLE. PUBLIC COMMENT ON AGENDA AND NON-AGENDA ITEM. RECORDED BY LAW 9,322.2. MAY I PLEASE HAVE DR. KIRSTEN ROBINSON, PLEASE, AGENDA ITEM 2.5.
>> DON'T START THE CLOCK. DON'T START THE CLOCK.
OKAY. NOW YOU CAN START THE CLOCK.
BOARD, I JUST WANT TO THANK YOU FOR THE UNANIMOUS VOTE THAT YOU GAVE US LAST WEEK TO APPROVE THE ELEVATION IN SALARY FOR THE CERTIFICATED AND YOUR VISITING THE CLASSIFIED TODAY.
SO I AM GOING TO THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR PASSING THEIRS AS WELL AND RECOGNIZING ALL OF YOUR WORKFORCE AND THE WORK THAT THEY HAVE DONE. I WANT TO DO THIS SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE IN A MINUTE AND WITH MY NEXT CARD IT IS GONNA BE A ROLL OF THE EYES AND WHY DO WE EVEN BOTHER DOING THIS.
THE BOARD YOU ARE SITTING ON IS NOT THE BOARD ANY OF YOU RAN FOR. THIS IS A MONUMENTAL TASK YOU HAVE. IT IS LIKE DRINKING FROM A FIRE HOSE EVERY TIME YOU COME. THERE ARE ADDITIONAL MEETINGS AND THERE IS SO MUCH. I THINK IF DR. DRATI KNEW WHAT HE WAS STEPPING INTO, HE MIGHT NOT BE SO INCLINED TO COME HERE.
WE WANT TO THANK HIM AS WELL AND THE FIRST THING WHEN HE CAME OUT OF THE BLOCK HE RECOGNIZED THE VALUE OF THE PEOPLE.
WHEN I ASKED FOR A LEADER I ASKED FOR A LEADER WITH THREE THINGS, WHEN I WAS PETITIONING NEIGHBORS IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD TO VOTE FOR SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS I WAS ASKING FOR THE SAME THING, THAT WE WOULD HAVE LEADERSHIP THAT COULD UNIFIED -- UNIFY US AND WAS SERVANT BASED AND WITH INTEGRITY AND PROFESSIONAL INTEGRITY. YOU CAN HAVE PERSONAL INTREEING -- INTEGRITY AND NOT PROFESSIONAL.
TODAY I WANT TO REMIND YOU OF THE VALUE OF THE WORK YOU DO.
EACH OF YOU IS GETTING A JAR. IN THE JAR THERE ARE MOMENTOS.
I TEACH LITTLE PEOPLE SO I WANT PNEUMONICS SO YOU CAN COME BACK TO IT. THE FIRST THING IS SEEDS.
IN THIS DISTRICT WE ARE PLANTING SEEDS.
WE ARE TRYING TO PLANT THEM IN FIRM SOIL AND HAVE THEM GROW AND GROW AND GROW AND GROW AND GROW. AND THERE IS SOIL.
LAST NIGHT I WENT TO EVERY SCHOOL IN THE DISTRICT AND WITH THIS SPOON SO I AM PROBABLY SEEN ON CAMERA GETTING DIRT.
THEY WILL HAVE IT WHEN I GO HOME.
I TOOK DIRT FROM EVERY SCHOOL IN OUR DISTRICT SO YOU REMEMBER STHA*Z -- THAT'S WHAT YOU ARE WORKING FOR.
THE SOIL IS IN CHILDREN'S LIVES, BUT IT IS HAPPENING AT EVERY ONE OF OUR SITES. ON IT IT IT SAYS MOMENTO MORREY.
THAT MEANS WE ALL DIE. THAT'S NOT FORBID.
I DON'T PLAN TO DIE TODAY AND NOR DO I WANT ANY OF YOU TO DIE SOON. THE POINT IS WE ALL DIE.
MICHELLE SHEP WAS A TEACHER IN OUR DISTRICT FOR 20 YEARS AND
[00:05:04]
SHE PASSED AWAY FROM COVID LAST YEAR.THE WORK WON'T MATTER IN 50 MAYBE OR 100 YEARS BECAUSE WE WILL ALL BE GONE. MAYBE EVEN IN 10 YEARS YOU WON'T BE SITTING HERE. THE WORK YOU ARE DOING IS CHANGING THE TRAJECTORY. MICHELLE MADE THIS BEFORE SHE PASSED AWAY. I PUT IT ON HERE SO YOU REMEMBER YOU ARE THE HEART OF THE DISTRICT AND SO ARE THE TEACHERS. WE ARE A HEART THAT IS BUILT BY ALL OF US WORKING TOGETHER. AND I GAVE YOU CEMENT.
DON'T EAT IT AND DON'T DRINK IT AND GIVE IT TO A SMALL CHILD.
WHEN YOU PUT WATER ON IT, WE HAVE A SMALL AMOUNT OF TIME TO MAKE AN IMPACT ON KIDS AND THEN IT IS SET AND A CANDLE BECAUSE WE ARE THE LIGHT OF THE DISTRICT.
WHAT YOU HAVE DONE IS PUT A LIGHT FORWARD.
I WANT YOU TO CONTINUE TO DO THE WORK YOU ARE DOING.
WE THANK YOU THAT YOU HAVE COME HERE AND WE THANK YOU FOR THE WORK YOU ARE DOING. DON'T LOSE SIGHT OF THAT.
ALL WE SEEM TO DO IS COMPLAIN AND I WANT YOU TO REMEMBER THE WORK YOU ARE DOING MATTERS. YOU MATTER.
>> THANK YOU. DR. ROBINSON, NON-AGENDA ITEM,
SCHOOL SAFETY. >> GLAD I GOT TO SAY THANK YOU FIRST. BOARD I WANT TO ADDRESS THE SAFETY ISSUE. WE HAVE BEEN VERY MUCH DELUGED BY WHAT IS HAPPENING IN THE WORLD AND IT CAME CLOSE TO OUR BORDERS WITH CHILDREN BRINGING GUNS TO HIGH SCHOOL.
I WANT TO REMIND THE BOARD BECAUSE I DON'T THINK IT IS SAID THAT NOBODY WAKES UP IN HIGH SCHOOL AND CARRIES A GUN TO SCHOOL. THAT STARTS A LOT SOONER.
WE ARE HAVING PROBLEMS IN OUR ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS THAT ARE PRO -- PROFOUND. IT IS SEEDED VERY, VERY EARLY.
WE HAVE JUST PROVIDED AN INCREASE IN SALARY THAT PROVIDES RELIEF TO YOUR TEACHERS, BUT THERE ARE -- THERE'S MORE THAN ONE CONDITION FOR SUCCESS. RIGHT NOW OUR INSTRUCTIONAL MINUTES ARE HAMPERED BY THE AMOUNT OF DISCIPLINE THAT'S GOING ON WITH CHILDREN THAT ARE DANGEROUS.
LAST YEAR I HAD A CHILD TELL ME THAT SHE WAS GOING TO KILL ME AND HOW SHE WAS GOING TO KILL ME AND THE OTHER CHILDREN.
WHAT I WAS TOLD WAS SHE IS 6. SHE IS 6, BUT SHE WON'T BE 6 FOREVER AND WE KNOW 6-YEAR-OLDS TAKE GUNS TO SCHOOL AND THEY SHOOT TEACHERS. SHE SAID SHE WAS GOING TO KILL ME. SHE DIDN'T HAVE ACCESS TO A WEAPON. BUT WHEN SHE IS IN HIGH SCHOOL SHE MAY WALK ACROSS THE STREET AND SHOOT SOMEBODY THERE.
THIS PROBLEM NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED EARLY AND WE NEED TO GET AHEAD OF THIS. WE HAVE A BEST CLASS FOR 3 TO 6 AND WE NEED ONE FOR TK TO 2. IN HIGH SCHOOL IT SEEMS LIKE THEY CAN CALL A SECURITY GUARD AND CHILDREN ARE REMOVED.
IN ELEMENTARY WE ARE TOLD TO KEEP THEM IN THE ROOM AND DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT, DOCUMENT, 17IEP'S AND 50 HOURS OF PAPERWORK OR 50 OR A THOUSAND AND THEY ARE NOT PUT INTO AREAS BECAUSE WE DON'T WANT TO SUCCES. THERE IS NO TRAIL.
IT LOOKS LIKE THEY CAME OUT OF NOWHERE FOUR OR FIVE YEARS LATER. THIS THESE KIDS -- THERE ARE KIDS DANGEROUS. I HAD AN EMOTIONALLY DISTURBED CHILD BECAUSE HE WAS THROWING CHAIRS AND I TAPED IT.
I AN -- I HAD AN AUTISTIC CHILD WHO GOT INTO EVERYTHING IN THE MOVE. MY INSTRUCTIONAL MINUTES FRITTER AWAY. WE NEED TO LOOK AT THE ELEMENT OF SUCCESS. THERE IS MORE THAN ONE THING THAT HAPPENS. YOU CAN PAY A TYPE OF -- TEACHER ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD, BUT WHAT DO I DO? CHASE THEM, WALK OUT OF THE ROOM? WE HAD 4 ADULTS WITH DEGREES AND ONE CHILD DE -- DESTROYING THE ROOM AND A TEACHER IS OUTSIDE WITH 23 KIDS.
BUT THE TEACHER IS EXPECTED TO TAKE THE 23 BACK IN WITH THE 24TH AND THEN TEACH. THEN THEY ARE GIVEN AN EASE PACKET FOR MENTAL HEALTH AFTER A CHILD HAS THREATENED TO KILL THEM AND THE OTHER KIDS IN THE CLASSROOM AND THAT EASE PACKET IS SO WHAT? WE ARE LOSING OUR MINDS? WE ARE NOT LOSING OUR MINDS. WE CANNOT CONTROL CHILDREN THAT ARE EMOTIONALLY DISTURBED AND UL NEEDS.
IT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED WHEN THEY ARE YOUNG.
JUST LIKE YOU NEED SECURITY GUARDS TO PROTECT KIDS UP THERE, YOU NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS OR ALL THE THEORY AND ACTION WILL NOT GET WHAT WE NEED BECAUSE THEY ARE I'M PED -- IMPEDIMENTS AND THEY ARE IN THE SAMES -- NAMES AND FACES OF SMALL CHILDREN. THANK YOU.
>> THANK YOU, DR. ROBINSON. >> NEXT IS ANNUAL YAW REN -- JULIA RENSON, STUDENT EQUITY. I'LL COME BACK.
MICHELLE CUYER. >> HELLO, EVERYBODY.
I AM HERE REPORTING CSCA, CHAPTER 22 NUMBERS AND TO THANK YOU FOR SUCH A RESPECTFUL AND PRODUCTIVE NEGOTIATION AND I
[00:10:09]
FEEL LIKE WHAT WE DO AS A TEAM, THE NEGOTIATING TEAM IS HERE WITH ME, GRAY SON, PART OF THE NEGOTIATING TEAM AND ANGELA NUNEZ PART OF THE E BOARD AND NEGOTIATING TEAM JOAN JANE IS THE VP OF THE CHAPTER. ANTHONY RAMIREZ, OF ALL PEOPLE FOR ME TO FORGET, ANTHONY, NEGOTIATING TEAM MEMBER.NOVELA CAMPBELL IS E-BOARD MEMBER AND SEVERAL MEMBERS HERE IN THE AUDIENCE TO REMIND YOU HOW APPRECIATIVE WE ARE OF THE RAISE AND THAT YOU WILL VOTE YES AND THAT WE CAN CONTINUE TO KEEP WORKING. WE HAVE DONE A LOT OF GREAT THINGS THIS YEAR. WITH THE SUMMER SAVER AND HELPING 11-MONTH EMPLOYEES, THAT IN ITSELF IS ALMOST A RAISE.
IT IS A RAISE. AND WORKING WITH US.
HEARING COMPLAINT AND SETTING UP MEETINGS, IT IS VERY POSITIVE AND WE HOPE TO STAY ON THAT TRACK.
JULIA RENSON? IS SHE HERE YET? IS THAT HER? HI.
MS. RENSON, PLEASE COME ON UP. >> I'M SORRY.
TRAFFIC. MY NAME IS JULIA RENSON AND I'M AN EDUCATION SPECIALIST AND TEACHER AT THE ADULT TRANSITION CENTER FOR BELLFLOWER UNIFIED. ONE, I WANT TO INTRODUCE YOU TO THE ATC. WE ARE A PROGRAM FOR MODERATE TO SEVERE STUDENTS -- EXCUSE ME. SORRY.
I WAS RUNNING. WE ARE A PROGRAM THAT HELPS STUDENTS WHEN THEY TURN -- WHEN THEY BASICALLY LEAVE 12TH GRADE, THEY GRADUATE. THEY COME TO OUR PROGRAM AND WE TEACH THEM FUNCTIONAL LIVING SKILLS, VOCATIONAL SKILLS, COMMUNITY SKILLS, SOCIAL AND BASIC LIFE SKILLS FOR THE NEXT FOUR YEARS. THE DISTRICT IS RESPONSIBLE FOR OUR PROGRAM FROM 17 TO 18 TO 22 YEARS OLD.
OUR STUDENTS DON'T HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO OUT THERE AND GET THE KIND OF VOCATIONAL TRAINING THAT WE PROVIDE.
WE ARE SUPPORTED BY WORK ABILITY AND TTP WHICH IS IRENE RAMIREZ'S PROGRAM. AND THERE ARE SPEECH TEACHERS AND THAT KIND OF THING. ALL OF THE SUPPORT STUDENTS HAVE IN HIGH SCHOOL CONTINUE TO FOLLOW THEM TO OUR PROGRAM.
WE ARE REGULAR TEACHERS, REGULAR SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERS.
WE ARE STRIVING FOR INDEPENDENCE FOR THEM.
THEY ARE TAUGHT COMMUNITY-BASED INSTRUCTION AND SO WE GO OUT TO THE COMMUNITY AND WE USE BUS PASSES AND WE TEACH THEM TO USE THE BUS SYSTEM HERE IN BELLFLOWER, ARE LAKEWOOD, LONG -- LONG BEACH. WE HAVE A PROGRAM THAT IS VOCATIONAL AND SO WE DO HAVE STUDENTS WHO TEACH -- I'M SORRY.
STUDENTS WHO WORK OUTSIDE OF THE DISTRICT AND THEY ACTUALLY EARN A PAYCHECK SO THEY ARE ABLE TO TAKE THE PAYCHECK AND LEARN BANKING SKILLS. WE TEACH THAT ALL TO THEM AS WELL. OUR PROGRAM IS MANDATED AND A FEDERALLY-FUNDED PROGRAM. THIS YEAR WE HAVEN'T HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE YOU COME TO THE PROGRAM, BUT WE WOULD LIKE YOU TO. DR. SUE KNOWS OUR PROGRAM VERY WELL. WE ARE HERE BASICALLY TO INTRODUCE OURSELVES AND ALSO FOR THE EQUITY OF ALL SPECIAL EDUCATION STUDENTS IN THE DISTRICT.
THIS YEAR HAS PROBABLY BEEN THE MOST DIFFICULT ONE FOR US.
WE NORMALLY HAVE THINGS THAT ARE PROVIDED BY THE DISTRICT WHICH ARE BUS PASSES AND A TRANSPORTATION PROGRAM.
WE HAVE PO'S THAT WE USE TO GO SHOPPING AND SMART N FINAL SHOPPING. WE CAN PROMOTE HANDS ON COOKING SKILLS. STUDENTS DO THE COOKING AND WE DO THE ININSTRUCTION. THEY NEED THE HANDS ON.
STUDENTS ARE MODERATE TO SEVERE. SOMETIMES DOING THE ACTIVITY RATHER THAN LOOKING AT A VIDEO OF THE ACTIVITY IS MORE HELPFUL FOR SUCCESS. THIS YEAR HAS BEEN DIFFICULT BECAUSE WE HAVE BEEN DENIED OUR OFFICE SUPPLIES THAT WE NEED TO RUN OUR PROGRAM. WE'VE BEEN DENIED A COPIER.
[00:15:03]
WE WERE PROMISED IN SEPTEMBER WE WOULD RECEIVE A NEW COPIER FOR SPECIAL ED, BUT IT HAS NOT BEEN ORDERED, OR IF IT HAS IT HAS NOT COME TO US. WE PUT IN THREE OR FOUR ORDERS FOR OFFICE SUPPLIES AND SUPPLIES LIKE PENCILS AND GLUE STICKS AND THE ORDERS HAVE NOT BEEN FULFILLED.WE ALSO -- SO THE GROCERY STOREE PROBLEMS IS TO GO TO OUR PRINCIPAL WHICH IS A WONDERFUL SUPPORT TO OUR PROGRAM, VERY TKPW*EUFTED -- VERY GIFTED AND VERY TALENTED WITH YEARS OF EXPERIENCE. SHE WAS ABLE TO ADVOCATE FOR US IN OUR PROGRAM. WE HAVE GONE THROUGH THE PROPER CHANNELS FROM OUR PROGRAM SPECIALIST TO THE DIRECTOR OF SPECIAL EDUCATION TO MR. NILA. WE GOT NO REPLIES.
THE LAST TIME I ASKED THE PA -- >> MS. BRANSON, I'M SO SORRY, WOULD YOU PLEASE PROVIDE YOUR REPORT TO STAFF AND DR. DRATI WOULD YOU MIND REPORTING BACK TO THE BOARD?
>> OKAY. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR
TIME. >> THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THOSE COMMENTS. DO WE HAVE AMENDMENTS TO THE
AGENDA? >> RIGHT NOW THERE ARE NO
AMENDMENTS TO THE AGENDA. >> THANK YOU.
[5. FLAG SALUTE / INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE]
>> NEXT IS FLAG SALUTE BY PRINCIPAL MS. MADRID.
WELCOME, MS. MA -- MADRID. >> AND FOR OUR FLAG SALUTE, PLEASE. PUT YOUR RIGHT HAND OVER YOUR HEART. READY, BEGIN.
I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS, ONE NATION UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.
AND MS. MADRID WILL PROVIDE OUR INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE TONIGHT.
>> THANK YOU. GOOD EVENING BOARD PRESIDENT MS, SUPERINTENDENT BEEN DRATI AND GUESTS.
I HAVE THE PRIVILEGE OF GIVING THE INSPIRATIONAL SPEECH.
I WAS ASKED TO GIVE THE MESSAGE FOR TONIGHT'S MEETING I HAVE TO REFLECT ON WHAT TRULY INSPIRES ME.
IT DAWNED ON ME. IT WAS NOT ONE SPECIFIC PERSON OR AN ACT, BUT RATHER ALL THE STUDENTS THAT I HAVE BEEN BLESSED TO MEET THROUGHOUT MY EDUCATIONAL JOURNEY.
I ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT GOING INTO EDUCATION WOULD BE A GREAT WAY FOR ME TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THIS WORLD.
LITTLE DID I KNOW MY STUDENTS WOULD ALSO BE MAKING A DIFFERENCE IN MY OWN LIFE. INSPIRATION IS DESCRIBED AS A FEELING THAT COMPELS YOU TO DO SOMETHING AND WE ALL KNOW OUR STUDENTS ARE THAT COMPELLING POOL.
THEY ARE WHY WE AS EDUCATORS WAKE UP AND WANT EVERY CHILD TO HAVE AN AMAZING DAY. WE KNOW WE HAVE AN IMPACT ON THEIR FUTURE AND SO WE ARE DETERMINED TO MAKE THEIR FUTURE AS BRIGHT AS POSSIBLE. WITH THE NOTION THAT EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE AND TO REACH FOR THE STARS WITH THAT GROWTH MINDSET.
MY STUDENTS HAVE INSPIRED ME TO THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX, TO ENJOY THE PRESENT AND TO LAUGH AND HAVE FUN IN LIFE.
AS AN EDUCATOR FOR ALMOST 30 YEARS MY DRIVE FOR CHANGE HAS BEEN MY STUDENTS. I AM INSPIRED BY THEIR JOY COMING TO SCHOOL EVERY DAY. THEIR ENTHUSIASM WHEN THEY FINALLY GET A SUBJECT THEY WERE STRUGGLING WITH, THEIR HAPPINESS WHEN WE RECOGNIZE THE ACHIEVEMENTS LIKE COMPLETING THE ST MATH JOURNEY OR PERFORMING ON STAGE FOR CHORUS OR BAND IN FRONT OF FRIENDS AND FAMILY. EVERY CHILD I ENCOUNTERED OVER THE YEARS HAS MADE A DIFFERENCE IN MY LIFE.
IT HAS MADE ME REALIZE SOMETHING I WANT TO SHARE WITH YOU TODAY.
I REALIZE THAT INSPIRATION ISN'T A ONE-WAY STREET.
[00:20:04]
INSPIRATION IS A CIRCLE. IT IS A CIRCLE THAT NEVER ENDS AS LONG AS WE AS EDUCATORS KEEP IT ALIVE.SO I'M HERE TODAY TO SHARE THIS MESSAGE OF INSPIRATION FOR ALL MY FELLOW EDUCATORS, ADMINISTRATORS AND COLLEAGUES TO ALWAYS REMEMBER YOUR WHY. NEVER STOP BELIEVING IN WHAT YOU ARE DOING AND WHO YOU ARE DOING IT FOR.
NEVER STOP GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND FOR OUR STUDENTS.
NEVER STOP THE CIRCLE FROM SPINNING ROUND AND ROUND FOR YEARS AND DECADES TO COME BECAUSE JUST AS THESE STUDENTS GIVE US INSPIRATION, WE HAVE THE ABILITY TO INSPIRE THEM BACK.
AND AS TEACHERS, ADMINISTRATORS AND EDUCATORS, ISN'T THAT WHAT OUR JOB IS ALL ABOUT? THANK YOU.
>> THANK YOU, MS. MADRID. NOW WE WILL GO ON TO STUDENT
REPRESENTATIVES. >> THE BULLETIN BOARD.
>> I'M SORRY. SORRY ABOUT THAT.
>> SO I HAVE THE PLEASURE THIS EVENING OF SHARING WITH YOU OUR BULLETIN BOARD. OUR BULLETIN BOARD IS WILD ABOUT THINKING. IT IS ACROSS ALL GRADES.
THE DISTRICT INITIATIVE WAS ONE IN WHICH OUR TEACHERS FELT WE NEED TO PRIORITIZE TO BUILD A CRITICAL DASH THINKING AND PROBLEM SOLVING AND COMMUNICATION SKILLS NECESSARY FOR ACADEMIC SUCCESS. THE BULLETIN BOARD ITSELF IS THE EXAMPLE OF A THINKING MAP. IT HAS EXAMPLES OF EVERY GRADE LEVEL. THE BULLETIN BOARD IS AN EXAMPLE OF SOME OF THE LESSONS FROM OUR TEACHERS.
WE WERE WORKING HARD TO IMPROVE STUDENTS' WRITING AND ORGANIZE STUDENT THINKING. IT IS EVIDENT IN EVERY CW CLASSROOM. AT A RECENT STAFF MEETING, WE SELF-ASSESSED THE USE OF THINKING MAPS AND OUR TEACHERS HAVE INTRODUCED AND UTILIZING THE THINKING MAPS IN THE CLASSROOM. 90% OF OUR TEACHERS SAY THE USE OF THE THINKING MATS MOTIVATES STUDENTS TO LEARN AND HELPS RETAIN INFORMATION AS WELL AS ORGANIZE IDEAS.
ALL TEACHERS HAVE SEEN IMPROVEMENT IN WRITING SKILLS SINCE THEY STARTED USING THINKING MATS.
THE NEXT STEP IS TO STRENGTHEN THE COMMON LANGUAGE TO INCREASE PERFORMANCE AND MAXIMIZE STUDENT LEARNING.
AND WE WANT TO PLAN THIS THROUGH OUR PROCESS.
WE ARE PROUD OF THE GROWTH WE ACHIEVED THIS YEAR USING THESE TOOLS AND WE ARE EXCITED TO SEE IMPROVEMENT OF LEARNING OUTCOMES. I WANT TO THANK MY INSTRUCTIONAL SPECIALIST MELANIE EDWARDS, MY INTERVENTION TEACHER, MY RSP TEACHER FOR TAKING THE LEAD AND DESIGNING AND PUTTING UP THIS AMAZING BULLETIN BOARD. THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME SHARE AN INITIATIVE WE HAVE ADD CRAIG WILLIAMS.
[6. STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE SCHOOL SITE REPORTS]
>> THANK YOU, MS. MADRID. AND NOW WE WILL GO TO STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE SCHOOL SITE REPORTS.
IT IS TIME FOR SOMERSET HIGH SCHOOL -- WAIT.

THOUGH WE COULDN'T USE SLIME, ONE OF THE PEOPLE WHO GOT AN AWARD WAS DR. SEPIO WHO DOES A LOT FOR OUR SCHOOL AND STUDENTS, WE GAVE HER A POSTER AND A BLIMP AND SHE WAS EXCITED AND PLEASED.
WE WERE EXCITED TO GIVE IT TO HER AND HAHN HER FOR -- HONOR HER. WE HAVE A PICTURE OF THE COLOR GUARD AND WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE FROM UP TOP.
ONE OF THE SENIOR HERE AND THE THEME WAS SPONGE BOB AND THE
[00:25:06]
COLOR WAS YELLOW. WE PRESENTED THE VALEDICTORIAN AND THE SAW LEWD FOR YEN. SALUDETORIAN.THE OTHER TWO ARE TIED AND CO-VALEDICTORIANS.
WE HAVE CHEERLEADERS AND AGAIN OUR WONDERFUL COLOR GUARD WHO DID -- [INAUDIBLE]. YOU CAN GO TO THE NEXT SLIDE.
THE OTHER ONE WAS SPRING FEST WHICH IS WHAT WE DECIDED TO DO BECAUSE OF THE FABULOUS FALL FEST WE HAD.
IT WAS A GREAT TURNOUT ONCE AGAIN.
WE HAD ALOT OF PEOPLE FROM THE COMMUNITY COME OUT.
I SAW LYNDSAY THERE AND IT WAS GREAT THAT SHE CAME.
THOSE ARE PICTURES OF SOME OF THE PEOPLE WHO WERE IN TRACK AND FIELD AND WE HAD TEACHERS THERE AND WE HAVE A GROUP PHOTO FROM ONE OF OUR BEAUTIFUL BACKDROPS PRESENTED BY THE ASB.
ANOTHER PAST EVENT WAS THE WONDERFUL SISTER ACT WHICH WAS A GREAT TURNOUT. ALL OF THE SHOWS WERE SOLD OUT AND EVERYBODY WHO WENT LOVED IT AND I'M SO GLAD TO HEAR ALL OF THE WONDERFUL FEEDBACK. WE DID OUR PROM FASHION SHOW WHICH WAS REVEALED OUR PROM THEME WHICH WAS MASQUERADE BALL AND EVERYBODY IS EXCITED AND THE BOYS GOT THE TUXES FROM THE FRIAR TUX. THEY WERE IN A PROM-ESQUE PHOTO FASHION. WE HAD NOMINEES LIKE GISELE RUIZ WHO IS NEXT TO OUR ASB PRESIDENT, ANTHONY AGUILLAR, RUNNING FOR PROM KING. AND THEN THE BIG UPCOMING EVENT THAT EVERYONE CANNOT WAIT FOR IS THE MASQUERADE BALL WHICH IS PROM AND WILL BE HOSTED AT THE WHITE HOUSE IN ANAHEIM ON APRIL 29TH. MOST OF THE PEOPLE ALREADY BOUGHT THEIR TICKETS SINCE IT WAS THE CHEAPEST PRICE.
I'M SO HAPPY AND SO EXCITED TO BE A PART OF IT.
AND THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR -- AND HERE TO STAY CONNECTED TO BELLFLOWER, THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME SHARE AND I HOPE YOU HAVE A WONDERFUL AND SAFE NIGHT. THANK YOU.
[APPLAUSE]. >> NEXT IS FROM MAYFAIR HOSPITAX
SCOTT. >> GOOD EVENING PRESIDENT GARZA AND BOARD AND EVERYONE IN ATTENDANCE.
I WANT TO THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME COME IN PLACE OF LIZ -- LYNDSAY. THIS IS THE EVENTS OF COMING AND PAST AND ALL OF THE CHANGES SCHOOL WIDE.
FOR EXAMPLE, THE BELL SCHEDULE SKH -- WHICH I'M SURE YOU HEARD OF GOOD OR BAD AND THERE ARE EVENTS FROM HIGH SCHOOL WHICH IS THE BLOOD DRIVE WHICH OUR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS ABOVE 16 DONATING BLOOD TO BETTER CAUSES AND EVENTS IN ATHLETICS WHICH IS THE ANGELS STADIUM GAME COMING UP WITH BELLFLOWER AND WE WILL BE PLAYING AGAINST BILL FLOUR. THERE -- BELLFLOWER.
THERE ARE MIDDLE SCHOOL EVENTS AS WELL WHICH I THINK THEY WENT TO JOHNS INCREDIBLE PIZZA WHICH I'M SURE WAS FUN AS WELL.
NEXT SLIDE, PLEASE. THIS IS OUR ANNUAL CHICK PETERSON GAME. IT IS A FACULTY VERSUS STUDENTS BASKETBALL GAME. IT IS VERY FUN, YES.
IN THE PICTURE YOU CAN SEE THAT UNFORTUNATELY THE TEACHERS DID WIN. THIS IS WHERE THE KIDS AND THE TEACHERS GET TO PLAY ON THE SAME PLAYING FIELD.
AS YOU CAN SEE EVERYONE STILL GOT AN AWARD.
NEXT SLIDE. >> THIS IS ONE OF MY PERSONAL FAVORITE EVENTS. THIS IS THE SHARING IS CARING INITIATIVE WHERE OUR SCHOOL WAS VERY INVOLVED IN DONATING NECESSITIES AND FOOD THAT PEOPLE ARE NOT SO FORTUNATE TO HAVE TO SKID ROW. IF I AM CORRECT, I BELIEVE WE RAISED OVER $500 TO DONATE TO SKID ROW.
AND EVERYONE WAS VERY -- VERY INVOLVED.
I BELIEVE MY SPANISH TEACHER GOT HER SPANISH CLUB INVOLVED TO SUPPORT THIS EVENT. NEXT SLIDE, PLEASE.
THIS IS THE SHOW TIME IN HAWAII TRIP.
SHOW TIME IS ONE OF OUR MUSICAL CHOIRS AND THE TRIP THEY WENT ON THIS YEAR IS HAWAII WHICH I WAS SO BUMMED NOT TO GO ON.
IN HAWAII THEY PERFORMED AS A SCHOOL AND DID A LOT OF SIGHT SEEING. WHILE THEY WERE THERE IN HAWAII THEY WERE ALSO LEARNING ABOUT THE HAWAIIAN CULTURE WHICH I BELIEVE IS VERY, YOU KNOW, INTERESTING TO LEARN ABOUT
[00:30:01]
DIFFERENT CULTURES AND ETHNICITIES AROUND THE WORLD.THIS IS OUR SENIOR SEASON. THIS SLIDE INCLUDES THE SENIOR EVENTS WE HAVE FOR SENIORS WHO ARE, YOU KNOW, STARTING A NEW CHAPTER IF THEIR LIFE AND TO FOCUS ON ONE OF THE EVENTS IT IS THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL GRADUATION VISITS WHERE SENIORS VISIT PAST ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS AND FOR THE SENIORS THAT DID NOT GO ONE OF THE SENIOR SCHOOLS THEY CAN CHOOSE WHICH ONE TO HAVE THAT EXPERIENCE. I BELIEVE THIS VISIT IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR SENIORS TO INTRODUCE TO THE KIDS AND ALSO SOME TEACHERS PULL OUT PICTURES FROM SO LONG AGO THEY REMEMBER OF THE SENIORS. THIS IS A BIG THING TO HAVE WHEN YOU ARE STARTING A NEW CHAPTER IN YOUR LIFE.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION AND I HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A GREAT NIGHT. [APPLAUSE].
>> THANK YOU, LENNOX. AT THIS TIME I WELCOME YOU TO REMAIN FOR THE BALANCE OF THE MEETING, BUT I RECOGNIZE YOU HAVE OTHER ACADEMIC OBLIGATIONS SO YOU ARE FREE TO LEAVE AT THIS TIME. THANK YOU.
AT THIS TIME WE DO NOT HAVE RECOGNITION.
SO PRESENTATIONS FROM STUDENTS, STAFF AND COMMUNITY, WE DO NOT
[9. PUBLIC HEARINGS]
HAVE PRESENTATIONS. PUBLIC HEARINGS.WE HAVE A PUBLIC HEARING THIS EVENING.

>> PRESIDENT GARZA, I DO. I WOULD LIKE TO REQUEST TO PULL TWO ITEMS. 10.3.2.8 AND 10.3.5.5.
>> AND THEN I WOULD LIKE TO REQUEST THAT WE PULL 10.3.5.6.
>> ANY OTHER ITEMS WITHHELD? NO? SO JUST TO CONFIRM, I AM PULLING ITEMS 10.3.2.8, 10.3.5.5, 10.3.5.6, IS THAT CORRECT? I MAKE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA AND WITHHOLDING ITEMS 10.3.2.8, 10.3.5.5,
>> QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? ROLL CALL.

DO I HAVE A MOTION? >> I MOTION.
>> SECOND. >> QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS?
>> I WANTED TO PULL THE ITEM TO SAY CONGRATULATIONS TO THE CSCA EMPLOYEES. IT HAS BEEN ABOUT SIX MONTHS SINCE I HAVE REALLY BEEN INVOLVED HERE, AND IT HAS ONLY BEEN A FEW MONTHS ON THE BOARD. I KNOW THIS WAS REALLY IMPORTANT TO SHOW YOU GUYS THAT WE VALUE YOU AND I THINK THE RAISE DOES.
[00:35:04]
I WILL TALK MORE IN MY BOARD REPORT, BUT I THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR EVERYTHING YOU DO. I HAVE TALKED A LOT ABOUT IT.MY MOTHER WAS A CSCA EMPLOYEE AND THIS IS DEAR TO MY HEART.
I APPRECIATE YOU GUYS, AND I APPRECIATE ALL THE WORK YOU DO FOR OUR KIDS. THANK YOU.
>> [APPLAUSE]. >> MADAM PRESIDENT, I WOULD ECHO MY COLLEAGUE'S COMMENTS CLASSIFIED TEACHERS ARE THE LINE OF THIS DISTRICT. CLASSIFIEDS CAN BE LEFT OUT OF THE CONVERSATION IN SOMEWAYS. JUST SO YOU KNOW WE VALUE YOU AND THE WORK YOU DO FOR OUR STUDENTS AND CONGRATULATIONS.
[APPLAUSE]. >> I ALSO WOULD LIKE TO DITTO THAT. I AM REALLY PROUD TO SAY THAT OVER THE EIGHT YEARS I HAVE GROWN TO REALLY APPRECIATE AND WORK CLOSELY WITH A LOT OF CSCA STAFF, SPECIFICALLY THOSE IN THE TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT AS WELL AS ON THE GROUND AND AS WELL AS OUR AIDS WHEN I VISIT THE CLASSES FOR SPECIAL ED.
IT IS DITTO AND HEART FELT. [APPLAUSE].
>> STUDENT BOARD MEMBER MENDOZA? >> THEY HAVE SHOWN THEIR LOVE.
>> AND I ECHO ALL OF THE SENTIMENT.
CONGRATULATIONS, EVERYONE. >> [APPLAUSE].
>> NOW WE MOVE ON TO THE NEXT ITEM WITHHELD.
>> POINT OF ORDER. CAN WE GET A ROLL CALL ON THAT?
ROLE CALL. >> BOARD MEMBER MENDOZA.
>> I. >> AND NOW WE WILL GO AHEAD AND THE NEXT ITEM OF BUSINESS WITHHELD IS 10.3.5.5.
>> QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? >> I HAVE A FEW QUESTIONS, MADAM PRESIDENT. MY FIRST QUESTION IS ON PAGE 1, YOU -- CAN YOU EXPLAIN, IT SAYS ATHLETIC FIELDS MAYFAIR HIGH SCHOOL. WHAT IS THE $179,000 FOR?
>> YES. THIS PURCHASE ORDER REPRESENTS AN UP-TO-DATE PAYMENT TO OUR ARCHITECT FIRM FOR ALL THE WORK THAT HAS BEEN DONE FOR IS MHS SPORTS FIELDS PROJECT.
WHEN A PROJECT IS IDENTIFIED, YOU WORK WITH THE ARCHITECT FIRM THROUGH VARIOUS PHASES THAT INCLUDES SCHEMATIC DESIGN AS WELL AS DEVELOPMENT PHASE CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENTS AND THE DSA APPROVAL BEFORE YOU ARE ABLE TO TAKE SOMETHING OUT TO BID.
THIS WAS AN IDENTIFIED PROJECT AS PART OF THE IDENTIFIED ORIGINAL BOND PROJECT AND ALL OF THIS WAS DONE ALREADY.
THIS PROJECT IS READY TO GO OUT TO BID SHOULD THE BOARD EVER DECIDE TO MOVE FORWARD WITH THAT.
THAT'S WHAT THIS PAYMENT REPRESENTS.
>> I ALSO HAD ANOTHER QUESTION. WITH THE PURCHASE ORDERS, CAN THESE BE BROKEN DOWN BY SITE? YOU SEE FOOD SERVICES, MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS. THERE'S A LOT OF DIFFERENT CATEGORIES, AND I DON'T WANT EVERYTHING, BUT ARE MAJOR CATEGORIES LIKE MAINTENANCE AND OPERATIONS AND THERE ARE A LOT.
CAN THESE BE BROKEN DOWN INTO THOSE SO WE CAN SEE HOW MUCH WE ARE SPENDING EACH MONTH IN JUST THOSE CATEGORIES?
>> WE CAN LOOK INTO THAT. >> THANK YOU.
>> ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS?
>> JUST A FOLLOW-UP QUESTION ON THE -- WHAT WAS IT? THE ATHLETIC FIELD. THAT WAS A PART OF THE CONVERSATION WHEN THE ORIGINAL BOND WAS PASSED.
THAT TOOK PLACE AWHILE AGO? >> IT WAS AN IDENTIFIED PROJECT AS PART OF THE BOND AND WITH THOSE IDENTIFIED PROJECTS, THE ARCHITECT DESIGN PHASE MOVED FORWARD WITH THESE AND IT WAS SLATED TO BE A PART OF THAT WITH THE STEAM BUILDING AND AS THE BOND COMMITTEE HAS REPORTED ALL OF THE MONEY HAS BEEN SLATED TOWARD THAT PROJECT, AND SO NOW IT BECOMES SOMETHING ELSE WHETHER THE BOARD DECIDES TO MOVE FORWARD WITH THAT.
>> THANK YOU. >> ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? HEARING NONE, LET'S TAKE ROLE
CALL. >> BOARD MEMBER MENDOZA.
>> MR. GARZA -- MRS. GARZA? >> I.
>> THE NEXT ITEM OF BUSINESS WITHHELD IS 10.3.5.6, AMENDMENT
[00:40:01]
TO THE ANNUAL LISTING MULTI-YEAR CONTRACT AND AGREEMENTS.DO I HAVE A MOTION? >> I MOTION.
>> SECOND. >> QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS?
SO AS WE ARE MOVING FORWARD WITH RENEWING OUR CONTRACT, WE HAVE A NOT TO EXCEED NUMBER THERE. SOMETHING I HEARD AS AN ISSUE ON SOME CAMPUSES IS THAT HEMET HAS HAD COMPLICATIONS WITH GETTING ACCURATE FIGURES TO THE SCHOOL ACCOUNTING OFFICES.
EARLIER THIS WEEK I HEARD ABOUT CAMPUSES, I THINK CLUBS NOW HAVE TO PAY $600 FOR A DAY FIELD TRIP INSTEAD OF $350 SO THE PRICES HAVE INCREASED. AND THERE ARE SOME INSTANCES WHERE THE WRONG AMOUNT OF BUSES ARRIVED AND THE WRONG AMOUNT OF BUSES ARRIVE. THERE HAS BEEN COMPLICATIONS AND GETTING ACCURATE INFORMATION BACK AND FORTH BETWEEN HEMET.
I WANTED TO ASK -- IT SEEMS LIKE WE NEGOTIATED WITH HEMET, AND DID WE EXPRESS OUR CONCERNS ABOUT THOSE ISSUES, OR WERE THOSE ISSUES BROUGHT TO THE ATTENTION OF OUR DISTRICT?
>> SOME OF THE COMMENTS YOU SHARED HAVE NOT YET -- NOT ALL OF THE INFORMATION YOU ARE SHARING HAS BEEN BROUGHT, HOWEVER WE ARE AWARE THERE HAVE BEEN SERVICES THIS YEAR THAT HEMET HAS NOT BEEN ABLE TO PROVIDE AND THAT HAS BEEN SHARED
IN MOVING FORWARD WITH THEM. >> I THINK IT IS APPROPRIATE TO MOVE FORWARD WITH THE CON TRABLGT AT THIS TIME, BUT -- CONTRACT AT THIS TIME, BUT IF DISTRICT STAFF COULD CHECK IN WITH THE SCHOOL ACCOUNTING OFFICES AND SEE IF THEY HAVE HAD ANY ISSUES BECAUSE I JUST HEARD AT ONE CAMPUS IN PARTICULAR THERE HAVE BEEN ISSUES WITH WRONG PAYMENTS FOR THE WRONG SERVICES. THAT'S KIND OF TRICKY TO ME.
IF YOU COULD JUST LOOK INTO THAT.
>> THANK YOU. >> I HAD A QUESTION AS WELL.
ARE THERE LIMITS TO WHEN THE BUSES WILL BE USED.
CAN THEY BE USED ON THE WEEKENDS? CAN THEY BE USED AT CERTAIN TIMES? I HEARD SOME OF OUR ATHLETIC EVENTS WERE CUT SHORT BECAUSE THE BUSES HAD TO LEAVE. IS THERE A LIMIT ON WHEN THE
BUSES CAN BE USED? >> THERE IS NO LIMIT.
WHEN THE REQUEST IS PUT IN, THE TIME FRAME IS PUT IN WITH THAT REQUEST. AS I STATED, WE HAVE THIS YEAR EXPERIENCED DUE TO STAFFING SHORTAGE THAT'S HEMET HAS EXPERIENCE IN DEALING WITH THAT AND WE BROUGHT IT TO THEIR ATTENTION. ONE OF THE THINGS THEY ARE DOING IS LOOKING AT THE EXCURSION FIELD TRIPS OR ON THE FIELD TRIPS IS TO LOOK AT CHARTER BUSES THAT CAN ENSURE THAT WE HAVE BUSES IN PLACE WHILE WE ARE DEALING WITH ALL OF THIS.
>> THANK YOU. >> MY APOLOGIES, DR. ELHESSEN.
>> THANK YOU VERY MUCH. >> I WOULD LIKE A FOLLOW-UP TO BOARD MEMBER MENDOZA'S QUESTION. IS THAT GOING TO BE RESEARCHING SO THAT THE BOARD CAN REVIEW OTHER TRANSPORTATION POSSIBILITIES? ARE RFB'S GOING TO BE GOING OUT?
>> IT IS SOMETHING OUR TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT IS
>> BOARD MEMBER? >> I WILL JUST SAY THE DISTRICT WHERE I CAME FROM, HE CAME TO A POINT WE HAD TO -- BECAUSE OF THE SHORTAGE OF BUS DRIVERS, WE HAD TO GET PARENTS HELP US TAKE STUDENTS TO GAMES AND ALL OF THAT KIND OF STUFF.
EVERYBODY IN THE STATE AND IN THE NATION IS DEALING -- STRUGGLING WITH BUSES. THEY ARE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT IS HAPPENING OUT THERE. REMEMBER IN NEW YORK, THEY HAD TO CALL OUT THE NATIONAL GUARD BECAUSE OF THE SHORTAGE OF BUS DRIVERS. IT DOESN'T SURPRISE ME THERE IS COMPLICATIONS WITH SOME OF THE PROCESSES BECAUSE EVERYBODY IS STRUGGLING WITH THIS. IT DOES PRESIDENT MEAN WE WON'T LOOK FOR OTHER AREAS. I AM JUST NOT CONFIDENT THERE IS AN EASY SOLUTION OUT THERE. I WONDER IF WE WILL ALWAYS TRY TO DO OUR BEST ADDRESSING THE TRANSPORTATION ISSUES, BUT WE HAVE A NATIONAL AND STATEWIDE ISSUE WITH TRANSPORTATION
ALTOGETHER. >> THANK YOU FOR THAT CONTEXT.
>> BOARD MEMBER CRIHFIELD? >> YOU SAID YOU WERE LOOKING INTO IT. IS THERE A TIME -- TIMELINE YOU WILL GET TO US ON THAT INFORMATION? WE DO NEED TO MITIGATE A RESPONSE AND HOW WILL WE
TRANSPORT THESE STUDENTS? >> AS YOU CAN SEE HERE, THE CONTRACT IS ONLY FOR NEXT YEAR WITH HEMET.
SO RIGHT NOW HEMET IS COMMITTING TO ANOTHER YEAR SO THERE MAY BE
[00:45:06]
-- THAT IN ITSELF TELLS US WE NEED TO LOOK AT OPTIONS AND WE WILL BE REVIEWING THE TRANSPORTATION PLAN.SO ANYWHERE BEFORE APRIL WE WILL BRING SOMETHING BACK FOR THE FOLLOWING 25-26 YEAR -- I'M SORRY, 24-25 YEAR.
>> THANK YOU. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS?
ROLE CALL. >> BOARD MEMBER MENDOZA.
[11. INFORMATION ITEMS]
INFORMATIONAL ITEMS. DO WE HAVE ANY INFORMATIONAL ITEMS THIS EVENING? SO LAWYER -- SO HEARING NONE, WE WILL GO ON TO BOARD/STUDENT MEMBER AND STAFF COMMENTS.DR. DRATI, DO YOU HAVE ANY COMMUNICATIONS THIS EVENING?
>> YES, I DO. THE DISTRICT HAS RECENTLY COMPLETED THE QUART -- QUARTERLY UNIFORM COME -- COMPLAINT SUMMARY JANUARY THROUGH MARCH AS REQUIRED BY THE COUNTY.
THERE WERE NO COMPLAINT RECEIVED DURING THE QUARTER IN THE AREAS OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS AND FACILITIES OR TEACHER ASSIGNMENT
>> THANK YOU. IT IS TIME FOR BOARD EDUCATION MEMBERS AND STUDENT BOARD MEMBER COMMUNICATION REPORTS.
WE WILL BEGIN WITH MR. MENDOZA. >> HELLO, EVERYONE.
I HAVE A SHORTER UPDATE TODAY. FIRST AND FOREMOST, I WOULD LIKE TO TALK ABOUT COLLEGE ACCEPTANCES.
I THINK ALL OFFERS ARE IN NOW. I THINK EVERY COLLEGE HAS GOTTEN BACK TO STUDENTS ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT THEY WERE ADMITTED OR NOT OR ON A WAIT LIST. WE HAVE UNTIL THE END OF THE MONTH TO MAKE OUR DECISIONS. I THOUGHT I WOULD SHARE A LITTLE PERSONAL NEWS. UCR WAS THE ONLY UC TO NOT REJECT ME. THEY WAIT LISTED ME AND I AM HOPING THAT UCR CAN TAKE ME. ONLINE YOU CAN KIND OF GET A QUOTE WITH GRANTS AND IF YOU ARE DORMING, MY QUOTE WAS FOR $40,000 FOR MY FIRST YEAR, BUT I CHECKED AND MY -- THE GRANTS OFFERED TO ME WERE $33,000, AND I HAVE 8,000 SAVED.
SO IF UCR TAKES ME, I WILL BE ABLE TO GO.
SO I'M REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THAT.
IF NOT THAT, I WILL -- I HAVE TWO ACCEPTANCES FROM OTHER COLLEGES IN THE STATE THAT ARE STRAIGHT ACCEPTANCES.
THE OTHERS ARE PROVISIONAL AND THOSE ARE FROM CHICO AND SAN MARCOS. IF UCR DOESN'T TAKE ME I WILL HAVE TO GO UP NORTH. IT IS IMPORTANT THAT SEEN -- SENIORS GET GUIDANCE WHEN GOING THROUGH THE PROCESS OF APPLYING FOR COLLEGES AND ACCEPTING OFFERS.
I DIDN'T HAVE A LOT OF HELP THIS YEAR.
I WAS TALKING TO BOARD PRESIDENT GARZA THE OTHER DAY AFTER A BOARD MEMBER AND I SAID, YEAH, I THINK UCR WAIT LISTED ME BECAUSE I SWITCHED MY MAJOR. SHE SAID, NO! YOU SHOULDN'T SWITCH YOUR MAJOR WHEN YOUR APPLICATION IS IN THERE.
I WAS LIKE, MAN, I WISH I HAD KNOWN THAT EARLIER.
A BIG THANKS TO ALL OF THE TEACHERS WHO HELPED STUDENTS WITH THEIR APPLICATIONS. AND THE COUNSELORS DID SO MUCH WORK I NOTICED ON MY CAMPUS AND OTHER CAMPUSES.
THAT'S IT FOR COLLEGES. THE CARPENTER HOUSE MUSEUM PROJECT, I HAVEN'T UPDATED IN AWHILE.
TOMORROW HISTORY CLUB WILL BE RETURNING TO THE MUSEUM AND AS FAR AS OUR PROGRESS HAS GONE, WE HAVE STARTED TO SORT THROUGH THE BOXES. WE GOT PROBABLY 20.
IT IS QUITE A BIT. I THINK WE ARE LEARNING A LOT WHILE WE ARE DOING OUR WORK. OUR ADVISOR, MRS. GARVIN AND HER HUSBAND WHO I BELIEVE IS A PROFESSOR AT DOMINGUEZ HILLS.
THEY WERE SITTING ON THE FLOOR AND READING A BIG, FAT NEWSPAPER THAT A STUDENT DID ON THE HISTORY OF BELLFLOWER.
ONE OF THE THINGS THEY SHARED WITH US IS THERE WERE ACTUALLY JAPANESE FAMILIES HERE IN THE 40S WHO WERE SENT THAT -- SENT TO THE INTERNMENT CAMPS IN BELLFLOWER.
WHEN I TOOK AP U.S. HISTORY, I LEARNED THAT HAPPENED ALL ACROSS CALIFORNIA, BUT TO REALLY READ THAT HAPPENED IN BELLFLOWER AND LIKE ON THE LAND WE ARE SITTING ON RIGHT NOW WAS PRETTY POWERFUL
[00:50:01]
TO ME. LEARNING THAT EXPRESSED -- STRESSED THE IMPORTANCE OF THE PROJECT, TO BE AWARE OF OUR COMMUNITY'S HISTORY. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO MORE PROGRESS IN THE PROJECT. LAST WEEK I MET WITH -- ME AND A JUNIOR COLLEAGUE OF MINE AT MAYFAIR, ALYSSA KLEIN, WE MET WITH THE PRINCIPALS OF EVERY CAMPUS, AND WE PITCHED AN IDEA FOR STUDENT CABINETS. I'M NOT SURE IF I HAVE SPOKEN ABOUT IT BEFORE, BUT IT IS A STUDENT-RUN COMMITTEE THAT HELPS STUDENTS PROBLEM SOLVE THEMSELVES.THEY HAVE A DUAL FUNCTION AS A PRINCIPAL'S ADVISORY COMMITTEE AND THEIR PRINCIPALS CAN RUN BY THINGS THEY ARE THINKING ABOUT AND THEN THAT COMMITTEE HOSTS OPEN FORUMS. IT IS A GREAT IDEA. ALYSSA PROPOSED IT AND WE ARE BEGINNING TO IMPLEMENT THAT AT MAYFAIR.
ALL OF THE PRINCIPALS EXPRESSED UNANIMOUS SUPPORT FORGETTING THAT SYSTEM DISTRICT WIDE. THEY WERE REALLY HELP -- HELPFUL. MR. HIGGINS SAID IT SHOULD BE MOSTLY FOR JUNIORS I THINK THAT IS THE NATURE OF THE STUDENTS AND THE CABINET WOULD BE A PRINCIPAL'S ADVISORY COMMITTEE AND HOSTING THE OPEN FORUMS AND TOWN HALLS.
THEY ARE HELPING US AND ESSENTIALLY I AM HAPPY TO REPORT THAT WE ARE MAKING REAL PROGRESS ON CREATING BAD STRUCTURES FOR THE STUDENTS. ALYSSA AND I AGAIN SPOKE TO BOARD LEADERSHIP. IT WAS ABOUT BEING AS PREPARED AS POSSIBLE TO BOARD MEMBERS. WE ARE LOOKING TO SPLIT UP THE POWER FROM ONE SINGLE BOARD MEMBER TO THREE.
THEY WOULD REPRESENT MAYFAIR, BELLFLOWER AND ONE FOR LASS FLORES AND SOMERSET. WE ARE LOOKING TO PUSH OUR ELECTIONS BACK FOR STUDENT BOARD MEMBERS TO THE START OF THE NEXT ACADEMIC YEAR. I KNOW LAST YEAR WE HAD OUR ELECTIONS IN THE SPRING AND THEN THE SECOND TO THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL THE WINNER WAS ANNOUNCED AND OVER THE SUMMER PREPARED AND I WAS SWORN IN OVER THE SUMMER. NOW IT LOOKS LIKE WE WILL HAVE TO START THE PROCESS IN THE FALL OF NEXT YEAR.
ALTHOUGH THAT WAS DISAPPOINTING, THAT IS WHAT HAS TO HAPPEN BECAUSE WE WANT TO MAKE SURE WE NAIL OUR REVISIONS TO THE STUDENT BOARD MEMBER POLICY. THERE WERE A LOT OF THOSE -- THERE WAS A LOT OF FREEDOM GOING INTO THE POSITION AT THE START OF THE YEAR. SOME WAS HELPFUL, BUT SOME I JUST FELT LOST AT TIMES. I THINK IF WE WANT TO GET THIS POSITION RIGHT WE HAVE TO TRAIN OUR STUDENT BOARD MEMBERS.
I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO THE PROCESS UNFOLDING IN THE FALL.
AND SO, YEAH, I'M CONFIDENT THAT BOARD LEADERSHIP, THE SUPERINTENDANT AND I ARE GOING TO COME TO A FINAL STRUCTURE THAT ADDRESSES EVERYONE'S CONCERNS.
LASTLY I WOULD LIKE TO END ON A POSITIVE NOTE.
TODAY WAS SENIOR DITCH DAY OVER AT MAYFAIR HIGH SCHOOL.
I SAW PROBABLY THREE OR FOUR -- I THINK IT WAS A TOTAL OF SIX SENIORS AT MAYFAIR. IT WAS PRETTY BARREN TODAY IN MOST OF MY CLASSES. I'M CURIOUS BECAUSE I NEVER REALLY PAID ATTENTION TO WHEN THE SENIORS DID THAT.
SO THIS YEAR I FIGURED I WOULD JUST COME TO SCHOOL.
I WONDER HOW THE DISTRICT FEELS ABOUT SENIOR DITCH DAY.
MAYBE WE CAN HEAR BACK FROM STAFF ABOUT THAT.
I JUST THINK IT IS AN ODD TRADITION AND -- ANYWAY.
SO WE ARE COMING UP ON SPRING BREAK NOW.
I GUESS THE SENIOR CLASS DECIDED TO TAKE THEIR SENIOR DITCH DAY THE DAY BEFORE SPRING BREAK SO THAT WAS KIND OF SILLY.
THAT'S IT FOR ME TONIGHT AND ENJOY YOUR SPRING BREAKS, EVERYONE. [APPLAUSE].
>> THANK YOU, BOARD MEMBER MENDOZA.
BOARD MEMBER -- DR. ELHESSEN. SORRY.
>> THANK YOU. WELL, IT WAS A BUSY WEEK.
I WAS -- I ATTENDED THE PRINCIPAL APPRECIATION SPONSORED BY THE YMCA. IT IS THE FIRST ANNUAL RECOGNITION OF OUR PRINCIPALS AND I WAS HAPPY TO BE THERE AND HONOR OUR PRINCIPALS AND THE WORK THEY DO IN SUPPORT OF OUR STUDENTS AND OUR COMMUNITY. WE HAVE PARENT REPRESENTATIVES AND ONE WAS FROM WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY ABOUT THE YMCA AND THERE IS AMAZING SUPPORT IN THE TRANSITION OF SOME OF THE CHILDREN ONCE THEY HAVE GONE THROUGH THE PROGRAM.
AND SO IT WAS A GREAT EVENT AND GREAT NETWORKING AND I HAD A
[00:55:04]
GREAT CONVERSATION FROM THE PRESIDENT OF LONG BEACH UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT. AND SHE WAS INTERESTED IN SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WE WERE DOING AND SHE REALLY LIKED THE IDEA OF CONNECTING AND ACTUALLY TALKING TO OTHER BOARDS IN DIFFERENT AREAS. AND SO WE ARE LOOKING AT DOING SOMETHING LIKE THAT AS A GROUP. I CONNECTED CAL APS WITH MY COLLEAGUE HERE, AND IT WAS A GREAT EVENT.WE HAD OUR CRIME SCENE STUDENTS TAKE OUR FINGERPRINT AND SHOW US HOW THEY DO THE PROCESS OF THE POWDER.
IT WAS VERY INTERESTING. ACTUALLY ONE OF OUR BOARD MEMBERS GOT REALLY GOOD PRINTS. THEY SAID HOPEFULLY WE WON'T USE THOSE FOR YOU IN THE FUTURE RECORDS.
IT WAS GOOD ACTIVITY AND THE STUDENTS WERE VERY INTERESTED.
ONE OF THE SHINING POINTS ABOUT CAL APS IS THAT YOU REALLY SEE STUDENTS ENGAGED. THAT'S WHAT MAKES IT SO SPECIAL AND AS A RESULT OF THAT, OUR CEO IS MOVING FORWARD ON OUR INTERNSHIPS AND DEVELOPING THE INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS. GOT GREAT RECOGNITION. WE HAD REPRESENTATIVES FROM CERRITOS COLLEGE THERE TALKING. ONE OF THEM IS RETIRING AND THEY ACTUALLY HELPED DEVELOP OUR CULINARY ARTS AS WELL AS OUR AUTOMOTIVE PROGRAM. AND SO OUR BOARD PRESIDENT AT THE TIME READ STATEMENTS FROM STUDENTS AND ACTUALLY ACKNOWLEDGING THEIR SUPPORT AND THEIR GRATITUDE FOR THE PROGRAM AND HOW IT HAS EDUCATED THEM IN THE OUGHT -- OUGHT -- AUTOMOTIVE PROGRAM. SHE KNOWS ABOUT CARS AND I THOUGHT THAT WAS GREAT AND A VERY TRUE STATEMENT.
IN ADDITION TO ANOTHER -- THERE WAS A RISING STUDENT WHO WAGS REALLY FOUND THE -- WHO FOUND THE WHOLE PROCESS OF COOKING RELAXING AND ENJOYED THE PROCESS.
AND SO THAT WAS ANOTHER, LIKE I SAID, SHINING POINT OF OUR PROGRAM. IN ADDITION, I WAS DOING MY RESEARCH ON FUNDING THAT I OFTEN SEE WITH OUR CSBA -- NOW MY PHONE JUST WENT OFF. SORRY.
I WANTED TO MENTION TO STAFF ABOUT THESE TWO PROGRAMS FOR RAISING FUNDS AND REVENUES. I DON'T KNOW IF YOU'RE AWARE OF THEM. BUT ONE OF THEM HAS TO DO -- IT IS SOME OF THE THINGS WE WERE LOOKING ON WHICH IS CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS. THERE ARE GRANTS COMING OUT HAVING TO DO WITH DISCRETIONARY FUNDS FOCUSING AND ADDRESSING FACILITYIES AND THE TOTAL IS $ 18.4 MILLION AND THE APPLICATION DEADLINE IS MAY 15TH.
I JUST WANTED TO BRING THAT TO YOUR AWARENESS.
IN ADDITION TO -- AND SOMEWHERE I FEEL SO IMPORTANT IS THE LITERACY PROGRAM. WE ARE IN HIGH NEED OF EDUCATION PROGRAMS AND THEY PROVIDE AN EARLY LITERACY PROGRAM AND HIGH-QUALITY BOOKS TO CHILDREN. AND AGAIN, THIS WAS BROUGHT TO MY ATTENTION ON WHAT WE ARE DOING IN OUR LIBRARIES AND THE FUNDING IS ABOUT 9 MILLION AND APPLICATIONS ARE DUE BY MAY 15TH. I WILL BE GLAD TO SHARE THE RESOURCES WITH YOU. I WANTED TO BRING IT TO YOUR ATTENTION AND IF I CAN BRING MORE MONEY TO OUR SITE AND SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS, I BELIEVE WE SHOULD HAVE STAFF MOVE FORWARD WITH THAT. WITH THAT I THANK YOU ALL AND WISH YOU A VERY HAPPY AND SAFE EASTER BREAK.
ENJOY AND THANK YOU. [APPLAUSE].
>> THANK YOU, DR. EL -- DR. ELHESSEN.
MS. STEWART. >> I WANT TO CON TKPWRAT -- CONGRATULATE OUR CSA EMPLOYEES ON THAT ARE RAISE FOR THE NEXT TWO YEARS. CSA WORKERS ARE THE LARGEST CLASSIFIED UNION IN THE NATION AND THEY SUPPORT THOUSANDS WHO SUPPORT OUR SCHOOLS. THEY ARE IN MY OPINION -- THIS IS MY OPINION, THE MOST IMPORTANT GROUP OF EMPLOYEES ON
[01:00:02]
OUR CAMPUS AND THEY ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO OUR SCHOOL SAFETY.OUR SECRETARIES ENGAGE WITH OUR STUDENTS AND PARENTS AND THEY ARE THE FRONT LINE OF EVERY OFFICE WHERE EVERYONE COMES INTO OUR SCHOOL. THE SECURITY GUARDS AND THE BUS DRIVERS, THEY KEEP OUR KIDS SAFE EVERY DAY.
OUR CUSTODIANS AND OUR MAINTENANCE WORKERS, THEY KEEP OUR CAMPUSES MAINTAINED AND THEY WORK CONTINUOUSLY FOR OUR CHILDREN. I REMEMBER I LIVE ACROSS THE STREET FROM BELLFLOWER HIGH SCHOOL AND ONE DAY I WAS DRIVING BY AND THE MAINTENANCE WORKERS WERE WORKING ON THE ROOF ON THE EDGE OF MCNABB, AND IT WAS A SATURDAY.
THEY ARE ALWAYS DOING THE BEST THEY CAN FOR OUR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES. OUR LIBRARIANS HAVE A SAFE SPACE FOR STUDENTS TO READ AND TO CONGREGATE AND COLLABORATE.
OUR AIDES GO ABOVE AND BEYOND TO LOVE STUDENTS AND MAKE CONNECTIONS WITH THEM AND MENTOR THEM.
OUR CAFETERIA WORKERS PROVIDE MEALS FOR STUDENTS.
AND AGAIN, I COULD GO ON AND ON. I HAVE TOLD THIS STORY BEFORE.
TRUE STORY, WHEN I STARTED TEACHING MY MOM TOLD ME GET TO KNOW YOUR CSCA WORKERS AND GET TO KNOW YOUR SECRETARIES AND CUSTODIANS. IF YOU NEED SOMETHING, THAT'S WHO YOU WILL GO TO, AND THEY LITERALLY RUN OUR SCHOOLS.
I DIDN'T UNDERSTAND IT AT THE TIME, BUT AFTER 24 YEARS OF TEACHING, I TOTALLY UNDERSTAND. THEY ARE THE PEOPLE THAT BASICALLY DO EVERYTHING FOR OUR KIDS AND THEY DESERVE SO MUCH.
SO I'M SO HAPPY FOR YOU. I KNOW I MIGHT BE FORGET SOMETHING PEOPLE, BUT OUR CSCA WORK ERPS AND EMPLOYEES, I RESPECT THE HARD WORK YOU DO AND SUPPORT YOU AND APPRECIATE YOU AND I AM SO HAPPY THIS RAISE WILL SHOW YOU HOW MUCH WE VALUE YOU AND YOU DESERVE THE WORLD. CONGRATULATIONS AND THANK YOU SO MUCH. [APPLAUSE].
YES. >> LAST WEEK I ATTENDED A TRAINING ON OUR OWN SCHOOL ABOUT NARCAN.
OUR WHOLE SITE AND THE TEACHERS WERE TRAINED AND I HOPE WE CAN DO SOME OF THE TRAINING AT OUR SITE AND IN OUR DISTRICT WITH OUR STAFF. THERE IS A HUGE OPIATE CRISIS RIGHT NOW AND I THINK PARENTS NEED TO BE AWARE.
THE D.A. IS WARNING OF BRIGHTLY-COLORED PILLS.
THEY ALMOST LOOK LIKE -- THEY ARE ROUND ALMOST LIKE -- YES.
AND THEY ARE BRIGHTLY COLORED AND THEY ARE JUST -- IT IS OUT THERE RIGHT NOW. NARCAN -- IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS, IT IS BASICALLY A SMALL CONTAINER AND TO ME IT LOOKS LIKE A WHITEOUT BOTTLE. YOU TAKE IT AND YOU PUT IT IN THE STUDENT OR WHOEVER THE VICTIM AND WHOEVER THE PERSON, THEIR NOSE AND YOU PUSH A BUTTON AND EVERYONE SHOULD BE TRAINED ON THAT AND I WANTED TO BRING AWARENESS TO THAT.
I HAD A MEETING WITH DR. DRATI AND SOME OF THE THINGS DISCUSSED ON THE AGENDA WERE SAFETY AND COMMITTEES AND OUR WEBSITES AND THE COMMUNICATION. ONE THING I WOULD LIKE TO SEE IS REPRESENTATIVES IN THE BOARD MEETINGS.
I FEEL LIKE WE SHOULD HEAR FROM OUR CSCA AND TEACHER'S ASSOCIATION EVERY MEETING SO WE CAN COMMUNICATE AND WE CAN LISTEN AND THAT WE CAN COLLABORATE TO MAKE IT THE BEST WE CAN. SO THAT IS ONE THING I SUGGESTED. I ALSO WANT TO LOOK AT SOME SAFETY AND SOME DISCIPLINE SO I REQUESTED SUSPENSION RATES.
I WOULD LIKE TO SEE WHERE WE ARE THIS YEAR COMPARED TO LAST YEAR COMING OFF THE PANDEMIC. AND SO I WANT TO COLLABORATE AND THINK ABOUT HOW WE CAN IMPROVE DISCIPLINE.
WE HEAR ABOUT DISCIPLINE AND AS TEACHERS WE KNOW.
I WANT TO LOOK AT THE DATA SO WE CAN COLLABORATE AND FIND OUT THE BEST SOLUTIONS. I REQUESTED ABSENTEE REPORTS.
I WANT TO LOOK AT THAT AND SEE WHERE WE CAN IMPROVE.
OBVIOUSLY THAT'S IMPORTANT. WE WANT OUR KIDS IN SCHOOL.
THAT'S ANOTHER THING I TALKED TO DR. DRATI ABOUT.
THIS MORNING I MET WITH SPEAKER RENDON AND WITH MR. CRIHFIELD IT WAS GREAT. WE DISCUSSED CYBERBULLYING AND THERE WILL BE A BILL DISCUSSED WITH CYBERBULLYING AND WE TALKED ABOUT SOME OF THE NEW BILLS PROPOSED IN REGARD TO EDUCATION AND WE TALKED ABOUT BUDGETS AND THE OUTLOOK OF THE DISTRICT AND HOW WE FELT AS NEW BOARD MEMBERS WORKING IN CONJUNCTION WITH OUR NEW SUPERINTENDENT. HE IS REALLY AMAZING AND SUPPORTS OUR AREA. AND THAT WAS A REALLY GREAT MEETING WITH OUR COLLEAGUE. AND LASTLY, ONE INFORMATIONAL ITEM I WANTED TO LET EVERYBODY KNOW ABOUT BECAUSE I DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT IT UNTIL A FEW DAYS AGO, THERE IS A SURVEY ON WHAT WE WOULD LIKE TO INCLUDE ON OUR DISTRICT WEBSITE AND IT IS ON OUR CURRENTS -- CURRENT WEBSITE RIGHT NOW.
PLEASE SHARE THAT. WE NEED TO GET AS MUCH FEEDBACK AS WE CAN. SHARE IT ON SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE SCHOOL SITES. WE NEED INPUT FROM STUDENTS, PARENTS, COMMUNITY MEMBERS ON WHAT WE CAN IMPROVE AND WHAT INFORMATION YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE ON OUR WEBSITE.
I JUST WANTED TO POINT THAT OUT SO YOU KNOW THAT IS THERE AND THAT YOU CAN FILL THAT OUT. OTHERWISE HAVE AN AMAZING SPRING BREAK. I APPRECIATE YOU ALL AND THANK YOU SO MUCH. [APPLAUSE].
>> THANK YOU, BOARD MEMBER STEWART.
BOARD MEMBER CRIHFIELD? >> THANK YOU, MADAM PRESIDENT.
I KNOW FOR HOW MUCH I POST ON SOCIAL MEDIA A BOARD REPORT IS KIND OF REDUNDANT. FOR THOSE WHO DON'T HAVE ME ON
[01:05:03]
MY SPACE, I'LL DO IT ANYWAY. BEFORE I START -- SOME OF YOU REMEMBER. BEFORE I START, AGAIN, THANK YOU AND CONGRATS TO THE CSCA WORKERS.SINCE OUR LAST BOARD MEETING I HAVE MET OUR NEW CSBA REP JACOB O'DONNELL. I ATTENDED THE STATE OF THE DISTRICT EVENT IN CERRITOS AND I ATTENDED THE LAKEWOOD SAFETY COMMISSION WHERE I AM A COMMISSIONER THERE.
I SPOKE AT MY NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH MEETING.
I MET WITH THE LAKEWOOD CITY COUNCILMAN, TODD ROGERS, A LOT OF SAFETY STUFF. I HAD A GREAT CONVERSATION WITH HIM. HAVE TO GIVE A PROUD HUSBAND SHOUTOUT TO MY WIFE WHO STEPPED UP TO BE BLOCK CAPTAIN.
SHE IS SUPER PUMPED. AT OUR CAL APPS BOARD MEMBER WE WITNESSED A CRIME SCENE INVESTIGATION DEMONSTRATION AND MET THOSE WHO MADE IT POSSIBLE AND NONPROFIT, HAVE TO GIVE THEM A SHOUT OUT, SEAN AND ERIC FROM HOMETOWN HEROS FOUNDATION.
THEY GAVE BALLS AND GIFTS TO THE KIDS.
GAVE THEM AN INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE.
WE HAD LONG BEACH STUDENT ATHLETES COME BY AND DO A DEMONSTRATION AND THAT WHAT -- THAT WAS A GREAT WAY TO START THE DAY. AND THEN THIS AFTERNOON, THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME TAG ALONG WITH YOU.
I APPRECIATE IT, SPEAKER RENDON. CYBERBULLYING, WE STALKED -- TALKED ABOUT THAT. WE TALKED ABOUT LEGISLATION.
AND FROM A BOARD EFFORT HAVING THOSE CONVERSATIONS REGIONALLY WHETHER IT IS TALKING TO OTHER DISTRICTS ABOUT WHAT THEY ARE DOING AND BEST PRACTICES AND WE ARE TALKING TO OUR STATE SENATORS OR THE ASSEMBLY MEMBERS AND FINDING OUT WHERE WE CAN SUPPORT DIFFERENT MEASURES TO MAKE OUR SCHOOLS MORE SAFE AND MAKE SURE THAT WHEN IT DOES HAPPEN, IF IT DOES HAPPEN WHEN THERE ARE APPROPRIATIONS AND MAKING SURE THAT OUR DISTRICT BENEFITS FROM THOSE APPROPRIATIONS IS IMPORTANT.
I KNOW SAFETY HAS BEEN A VERY HEAVY ISSUE ESPECIALLY SINCE NASHVILLE, BUT I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT IT IS CENTRAL THAT WE REMAIN CENTERED ON SCHOOL SAFETY EVEN WHEN IT IS NOT THE TOP OF THE NEWS CYCLE. IT IS IMPORTANT WE CONTINUE THE EFFORTS LIKE WE HAVE BEEN TO MAKE SURE WE ARE INVESTING IN THE EFFECTIVE MEASURES AND IMPLEMENTING TRAINING FOR STAFF.
I HAVE ONLY BEEN ON THIS BOARD A FEW SHORT MONTHS AND EVEN THOUGH IT FEELS A LOT LONGER SOMETIMES, I'M NOT GONNA LIE TO YOU.
IT IS A LOT OF TIME AND ENERGY FROM EVERYONE INVOLVED.
I AM PROUD OF THE DIRECTION WE ARE HEADED AND THE OPPORTUNITIES WE ARE CREATING FOR OUR STUDENTS.
THANK YOU AND HAVE A HAPPY EASTER.
>> [APPLAUSE]. >> THANK YOU, BOARD MEMBER CRIHFIELD. AS FOR MYSELF, I WAS ABLE TO ATTEND "SISTER ACT" ON A DATE NIGHT WITH MY HUSBAND.
REALLY, REALLY ENJOYED IT. I WANT TO GO BACK AGAIN FOR THE NEXT ONE WHENEVER THAT WILL BE. AND I ATTENDED THE 11TH ANNUAL STATEWIDE CONFERENCE ALONG WITH MY FELLOW BOARD MEMBER ARMSTRONG. WE WERE DISCUSSING ISSUES REVOLVING WATER AND ONE QUESTION I POSED TO THEM WAS WHERE DO SCHOOL DISTRICTS FIT INTO ALL OF THIS? WE ARE PROBABLY THE BIGGEST CONSUMER OF WATER IN THE CITIES.
HOW ARE WE GOING TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO PROVIDE THE CLEAN WATER FOR OUR STUDENTS AND OUR STAFF MEMBERS AND MAKE SURE WE FLUSH THE TOILETS. THAT'S IMPORTANT HOW DO -- HOW DO WE BECOME MORE INVOLVED IN THESE EFFORTS AND THAT WAY WE CAN CONTINUE TO PROVIDE THAT IN OUR -- IN ALL OUR FACILITIES? THAT IS MY FOCUS THERE FOR US. AND I'M REALLY ENJOYING THE FACT THAT I GET TO DO SOMETHING ALONG WITH MY FELLOW BOARD MEMBER.
MS. ARMSTRONG. SO FOR NOW, THANK YOU SO MUCH EVERYONE AT CSCA. CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR CONTRACT. LIKE MY FELLOW BOARD MEMBERS SAID, WE NEED YOU. THE TEACHERS NEED YOU AND THE STAFF NEEDS YOU. IT IS A TEAM EFFORT AND WE ARE HAPPY YOU ARE STAKING WITH US AND YOU ARE MAKING THESE MOVEMENTS FORWARD. EVERYONE HAVE A HAPPY AND SAFE
[01:10:04]
SPRING BREAK. IF THERE IS NO OBJECTION TO THIS MEETING, THE MEETING IS ADJOURNED AT 7:16 UNTIL OUR NEXT REGULAR BOARD MEETING ON TUESDAY APRIL 25TH.
