THERE ARE REPLACEMENT PAGES. >> REPLACEMENT PAGES FOR AGENDA 10.3.1.4 IS ON THE BACK TABLE. SO TONIGHT WE DO HAVE REQUESTS FOR PUBLIC COMMENTS. >> MS. GARZA, I'M SORRY. THERE IS ALSO FOR 10.3.2.2 AND FOR 10.3.2.2. >> THANK YOU. SO NOW, WE ARE GOING TO GO FORWARD WITH AGENDA/NONAGENDA ITEMS. WE HAVE REQUESTS FOR PUBLIC COMMENTS. THE FIRST ONE IS JEFFREY ON A NON-AGENDA ITEM. PLEASE APPROACH THE PODIUM. THE MEETINGS OF THE GOVERNING BOARD ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC AND INDIVIDUAL SPEAKERS WILL BE ALLOWED THREE MINUTES TO ADDRESS THE BOARD ON AGENDA AND NON--AGENDA ITEM. WE WILL LIMIT TO EACH ITEM 21 MINUTES AS PER BOARD LAW. >> MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, I AM A PARENT OF A SEVENTH GRADER AT MAY FAIR MIDDLE SCHOOL. MY DAUGHTER HAS BEEN IN THE DISTRICT SINCE KINDERGARTEN AND HAPPY WITH THE EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES THE STAFF AT LINDSTROM MIDDLE OFFERED HER. BUT THINGS HAVE QUICKLY GONE DOWNHILL. ON DECEMBER 1ST, MY DAUGHTER HAD AN AUTISTIC MELT DOWN THAT THAT WAS COMPARABLE TO MANY PREVIOUS MELT DOWNS. HOWEVER ON DECEMBER 1ST, WE ALSO FOUND OUT MAYFAIR DID NOT TRAPBGS TPER HER BEHAVIOR INTERVENTION PLAN FROM THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TO THE MIDDLE PLAN. WITHOUT THE PLAN IN PLACE THEY DID NOT IMPLEMENT CRISIS PROCEDURES PART OF THE LEGAL IEP. SHE WAS HELD AT TORRANCE PSYCHIATRIC HOSPITAL FOR 27 HOURS. BECAUSE SHE WAS IN A MINOR'S WARD HER FATHER AND I WERE NOT ALLOWED TO SEE HER. SHE SPENT THE TIME CRYING AND AFRAID AND HER DISCHARGE PAPERS EXPLAINED THAT SHE SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN BROUGHT TO THE HOSPITAL AND NO FURTHER ACTIONS WERE NEEDED AND THAT THIS WAS A MANIFESTATION OF HER AUTISM. I AM HERE TO NOT ONLY EXPRESS MY CONCERN FOR MY DAUGHTER, BUT FOR ALL CHILDREN WHO ARE NOT HAVING THEIR IEP'S LEGALLY FOLLOWED IN THE BELLFLOWER UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT. IN OUR CASE THE BEHAVIOR PLAN DID NOT TRANSFER FROM LINSTROM TO MAY FAIR EVEN THOUGH IT WAS PART OF THE IEP PROCESS. THE SCHOOL NEVER MET THE SPECIFICATIONS MY DAUGHTER'S IEP SPELLED OUT FOR AN APPROPRIATE DE ESCALATION ROOM. THE SCHOOL CLAIMED THE FRONT OFFICE WAS PRIVATE ENOUGH FOR A CHILD IN AN AN AN -- IN AN AUTISTIC TANTRUM TO REGULATE. MY FAMILY AND MY DAUGHTER'S TREATMENT TEAM REQUESTED A HOME HOSPITAL LEAVE FOR WE LOOK FOR A MORE APPROPRIATE PLACE. IT WAS SUBMITTED ON FEBRUARY 10TH AND THE DISTRICT HAS FIVE DAYS TO ORGANIZE A SCHEDULE. WE ARE STILL WAITING ON THE SCHEDULE. IT HAS BEEN NEAR IMPOSSIBLE TO HAVE EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION WITH MAYFAIR MIDDLE SCHOOL AND THE DISTRICT OFFICE. MY DAUGHTER WENT FROM STRAIGHT A'S IN ALL HONORS CLASSES TO [00:05:03] STRAIGHT F'S WITH ZERO SUPPORT FROM ANYONE AT SCHOOL TO HELP HER BE SUCCESSFUL AFTER THE TRAUMA OCCURRED WHEN A CHILD FROM UH -- AUTISM WAS TAKEN FROM HER HOME. WE WERE TOLD THE SAME ACTION WOULD HAPPEN NEXT TIME. I AM HERE BEGGING YOU TO TAKE A LOOK AT HOW POORLY IEP'S ARE BEING IMPLEMENTED AT MAYFAIR MIDDLE SCHOOL AND WHEN A PARENT REACHES OUT FOR HELP IT IS MORE COMMON THAN NOT THAT NO ONE RESPONDS TO A CALL, OR THE RESPONSE IS JUST SOMEONE WILL LOOK INTO IT. BELLFLOWER UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT DENIED HER SINCE DECEMBER 1ST AND I NEED YOUR HELP TO PROTECT MY DAUGHTER AND OTHERS NOT RECEIVING APPROPRIATE ACCOMMODATIONS SPELLED OUT IN AN IEP AND WRITTEN OUT IN THE DISTRICT. I LEFT MY CONTACT INFORMATION IF ANYONE CARES TO DISCUSS THIS IN MORE DETAIL. THANK YOU. >> THANK YOU. NEXT ITEM -- SORRY. NEXT PERSON TO COME UP WOULD BE DAVID ARREANO IT IS FOR THE NEXT NON--AGENDA -- NONAGENDA ITEM. >> GOOD EVENING. HONORABLE BOARD AND MEMBERS AND EVERYONE HERE. I'M SORRY. MY HEART GOES OUT TO THAT LAST ONE. THAT WAS TOUGH. I'M HERE ON A LIGHTER NOTE. CITIZEN TASK FORCE AND I AM A MEMBER OF THE CITIZEN TASK FORCE. PROUD TO BE A MEMBER. JUST WANT TO SAY THE GROUP IS A GREAT COLLECTION OF COMMUNITY LEADERS AND INDIVIDUALS FROM THE COMMUNITY AND CONCERNED PARENTS. SO FAR P WHAT I HAVE GATHERED IS I WOULD LIKE TO PRESS THE BOARD AND ENCOURAGE THEM TO EVALUATE THE FUNCTIONS AND THE DECISIONS AND WHAT THE CITIZENS TASK FORCE ACTUALLY DOES FOR THE COMMUNITY AND ALSO THE SCHOOL BOARD AND RIGHT NOW THERE IS NO FORMAL COMMUNICATION RIGHT NOW ABOUT WHAT THE CTF DOES AND ALSO WHEN SOMETHING IS BEING BROUGHT TO YOU THERE IS NO REPRESENTATION FROM THE TASK FORCE TO SPEAK WITH THE BOARD AND THE TIMES I HAVE BEEN IN THE MEETINGS THERE IS A LOT OF I WOULD SAY -- A LOT OF MATERIAL THAT NEEDS TO BE THOUGHT ABOUT BEFORE THE MEETING. WE ACTUALLY GET THE INFORMATION BESIDES TEXTBOOKS. A GOOD EXAMPLE IS AT THE LAST MEETING I WASN'T AWARE OF ANYTHING BROUGHT TO THE BOARD ITSELF. I DIDN'T REALLY KNOW WHAT WAS BEING TALKED ABOUT. I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO MORE COLLABORATION NOT ONLY -- THERE ARE A LOT OF OTHER BOARD MEMBERS CONCERNED AS MUCH AS ME. I AM GLAD TO BE A PART OF IT, BUT APPRECIATE IF THERE IS ANYWAY YOU CAN GET A CLOSER LOOK AT IT AND MAYBE WE CAN MAKE BETTER DECISIONS FOR THE DISTRICT. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. >> THANK YOU MR. ARREANO. ARE THERE ANY OTHER PUBLIC COMMENTS? THANK YOU. [4. AMENDMENTS TO THE AGENDA] NOW TO AMENDMENTS TO THE AGENDA. >> YES. WE DO. WE WILL -- WE HAVE A CORRECTION TO AGENDA ITEM 10.3.1.3, STUDENT EXPUTTINGS -- EXPULSION CASE. THIS ITEM IS BEING REMOVED FROM THE AGENDA AND WILL BE BROUGHT BACK AT A DIFFERENT MEETING. >> THANK YOU. DO I HAVE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE AMENDMENTS TO THE AGENDA? >> I MAKE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE AMENDMENT TO THE AGENDA. >> SECOND. >> ROLE CALL. >> MR. MENDOZA. >> I. >> MS. ARMSTRONG. >> I. >> DR. ELHESSEN. >> I. >> MS. STEWART. >> I. >> MR. CRIHFIELD. >> I. >> MS. GARZA. >> I. [5. FLAG SALUTE / INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE] >> THANK YOU. TO SAY I AM EXCITED IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT. I WAS IN AWE TO SEE WHAT CONSTRUCTION HAS PUT TOGETHER. THERE IS SO MUCH OPPORTUNITY HERE AND I ALREADY SEE A CHANGE IN THE ATMOSPHERE ON OUR CAMPUS. THERE IS SO MUCH ACCESSIBILITY FOR THESE STUDENTS AND NOT EVEN JUST FOR ADVANTAGES -- ADVANCEMENTS IN TECHNOLOGY, BUTTON ENVIRONMENT IN GENERAL. YOU WALK IN AND YOU ARE READY TO LEARN. YOU ARE HAPPY AND THE LIGHTING AND THE NEWNESS OF IT IS OVERALL AMAZING. UNFORTUNATELY I WON'T BE ABLE TO UTILIZE IT, I AM EXCITED FOR THE FUTURE MAYFAIR HAS WITH THE FACILITY AND THE IMPLEMENTATION IT IS GOING TO BRING FOR OUR STUDENTS. SUPER EXCITED. PRESENTATIONS FROM STUDENTS / STAFF / COMMUNITY] THE NEXT ITEM OF BUSINESS IS THE APPROVAL OF MINUTES. >> POINT OF ORDER, MS. GARZA. CAN WE GO BACK TO PRESENTATIONS? >> SORRY. MY APOLOGIES. NOW IT IS TIME FOR PRESENTATIONS. DR. DROTI. >> WE HAVE TWO PRESENTATIONS THIS EVENING. AT THIS TIME I WILL BE TURNING IT OVER TO ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT MS. CARTER FOR A PRESENTATION ON TEXTBOOK ADOPTIONS. >> THIS EVENING I AM PLEASED TO BRING FORWARD THE DIRECTOR OF INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT AND IMPROVEMENT AND HER TEAM, TAMMY ZILLA. SHE WILL BE COMING FORWARD AND INTRODUCING HER TEAM WHO WILL PROVIDE YOU RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE HISTORY SOCIAL SCIENCE TEXTBOOKS ADOPTION. >> GOOD EVENING, PRESIDENT GARZA AND MEMBERS OF THE BOARD AND CABINET. TONIGHT I AM PLEASED TO BRING THE RECOMMENDED ADOPTION MATERIALS FOR SOCIAL SCIENCE. UNLIKE THE LAST TWO ADOPTIONS, MY TEAM AND I HAVE BROUGHT TO YOU, THIS SPANS GRADES K-12. IT HAS BEEN A PLEASURE SUPPORTING MS. MOKE AS SHE LEAD THE ADOPTION COMMITTEE THROUGH [00:35:04] THIS PROCESS. THE TEAM HAS BEEN DEDICATED AND WORKED TO SELECT MATERIALS THEY THINK WOULD BEST MEET THE NEEDS OF THE STUDENTS IN LIGHT OF THE INSTRUCTIONAL SHIFT OF THE NEW FRAMEWORK. MRS. MOKE AND THE TEACHER PRESENTERS WILL LEAD YOU THROUGH THE ADOPTION PROCESS THAT INCLUDES INFORMATION ON THE REVISED SOCIAL SCIENCE FRAMEWORK AND TEACHER TESTIMONIALS REGARDING THE CURRICULUM RECOMMENDED FOR ADOPTION. >> GOOD EVENING, BOARD, AND GOOD EVENING CABINET. I WANT TO START OFF WITH WHAT THE ADOPTION UNDERSTANDING A LITTLE OF THE PROCESS. THE STANDARDS ARE THE SAME, AND YOU ARE GOING TO SEE THOSE ON THE LEFT WITH THE 6.1. THOSE HAVE NOT CHANGED SINCE 1998. WHAT WE CHANGED IS THE SAME AND HOW WE CHANGED IT LOOKS DIFFERENT. THE FRAMEWORK HAS BEEN DEVELOPED IN ORDER TO MEET THESE STANDARDS AND TO EFFECT THE CHANGE THAT OUR STATE HAS MADE. THE FRAMEWORK IS THERE TO HELP TEACH THE STANDARDS WITH AN EYE ON CRITICAL THINKING AND IMPROVED READING AND WRITING AND CIVIC ENGAGEMENT. THIS IS RELEASED BY THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION JUST HIGHLIGHTING THE DEMOCRATIC VALUES AND THE DIVERSITY OF OUR STATE. CALIFORNIA BEING THE MOST DIVERSE STATE IN THE NATION. THE OBJECTIVE OF THE FRAMEWORKS. I WILL GIVE UH MOMENT TO READ THROUGH THOSE. >> IN SUMMATION HIGHLY FOCUSED ON STUDENT DETAILS, THE FIRST BULLET, AND CONTENT. BE RESEARCH BASED AND PREPARE STUDENTS FOR COLLEGE AND CAREER READINESS AND OUR LAST BULLET IS CRITICAL THINKING AND PROBLEM SOLVING AND TRANSFERABLE KNOWLEDGE. THE INSTRUCTIONAL SHIFTS OF THE FRAMEWORK, SO WITH THE FRAMEWORK YOU WILL SEE FOUR KEY INSTRUCTIONAL SHIFTS. THE FIRST SHIFT BEING DISCIPLINE-SPECIFIC. NO LONGER ARE STUDENTS GOING TO BE ASKED TO MEMORIZE DISCONNECTED CONTENT, BUT RATHER STUDENTS WILL ENGAGE THROUGH CONTEXT AND DISCIPLINARY AND CONTEXT ACTUAL SIGNIFICANCE. OUR SECOND SHIFT IS EXPANDED CONTENT AND ENCOURAGING STUDENTS TO LEARN ABOUT THE WORLD THROUGH SEVERAL PERSPECTIVES. SO IN ORDER TO MEET THE CULTURAL AND DIVERSE PERSPECTIVE THEY ADDED MORE FRAMEWORK -- MORE TO THE FRAMEWORK. THE THIRD SHIFT IS STUDENT LITERACY. THERE IS A HEAVY FOCUS ON GETTING STUDENTS TO READ AND WRITE -- TO READ, WRITE CLEARLY AND PERSUASIVELY AND COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER. AND THEN OUR LAST INSTRUCTIONAL SHIFT IS THROUGH OUR CIVICS. IT IS A HIGH FOCUS ON WHAT IT MEANS TO WORK -- TO BE A STUDENT IN A DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY AND HOW THE DEMOCRATIC SOCIETY IS CONTINUOUSLY BALANCING THE RIGHTS OF THE INDIVIDUAL AND THE RIGHTS OF THE DEMOCRACY. AND THIS SLIDE IS AN OUTLINE OF THE PROCESS. WE BEGAN THE PROCESS LAST MARCH. WE DID A CURRICULUM FAIR WHERE TEACHERS IN ALL HISTORY AND SOCIAL SCIENCE TEACHERS AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL WERE INVITED. ELEMENTARY TEACHERS, WE HAD AN ELEMENTARY AND A 6TH GRADE REPRESENTATIVE AT EACH ONE. ALSO SPECIAL ED AND AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL, LANGUAGE ARTS WAS INVITED IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE. WE REVIEWED ALL MATERIALS K-8 APPROVED BY THE STATE AND 9-12 WE LOOKED AT ALL OF THE MATERIALS THAT WERE AVAILABLE. THERE -- FROM THERE BE -- WE WENT TO PUBLISH THE PRESENTATIONS AND WE DID A REVIEW OF THE PROGRAMS TO DECIDE WHICH PROGRAMS WE WANTED TO PILOT FOR THE UPCOMING YEAR. IN BETWEEN THAT TIME OUR AP HISTORY SOCIAL SCIENCE WAS BOARD APPROVED. SO THEY WERE READY TO GO AT THE START OF THIS YEAR. AND THEN WE STARTED ON PILOT PD FOR THE PILOT TEACHERS. WE PILOTED TWO PROGRAMS. WE MADE OUR FINAL SELECTION IN JANUARY. WE DID A PRESENTATION TO CITIZENS TASK FORCE AND THEN WE ARE AT THIS BULLET NOW WE ARE PRESENTING TO YOU. THE PROGRAM WINNER WAS ELEMENTARY WAS SOVIS WITH 100% OF THE TEACHER VOTE. HERE IS A K-5 TESTIMONIAL. [00:40:06] I WILL GIVE YOU A MOMENT TO READ THROUGH THAT. AND HERE IS THE SECOND K-5 TESTIMONIAL FROM ONE OF THE DUAL TEACHERS. KEEPING IN MIND THE SHIFT WORK IN THE TEST -- TESTIMONIALS. LITERACY, CIVICS, EXPANDED CONTENT AND INQUIRY. AND SPEAKING ON BEHALF OF OUR ELEMENTARY PILOT TEAM IS ELEMENTARY REPRESENTATIVE DR. KI RSTEN ROBINSON. IT TAKES US TO THE MIDDLE SCHOOL PROGRAM WHICH IS 78.6% OF THE VOTE. THERE IS OUR 6-8 TESTIMONIAL. AND AGAIN THE SHIFTING OF THE FRAMEWORK. AND THEN OUR SECOND TESTIMONIAL FOR 6-8. AND THEN OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL PILOT REPRESENTATIVE, DANIEL FON DIS B. DANIEL FONG. AND THEN IT TAKES US INTO OUR LAST OR SECONDARY PROGRAM WHICH IS SOVIS AGAIN WITH 100% OF THE VOTE. HERE IS THE SECONDARY PILOT TEACHER TESTIMONIAL. THERE IS A LENGTHIER ONE. AND ALSO A RECOMMENDATION BY TEACHER IS A PSYCHOLOGY ELECTIVE THAT FALLS UNDER THE HISTORY SOCIAL SEE YENS. AND THEN THE SECONDARY PILOT REPRESENTATIVE SUSAN CHURNIN. ANY QUESTIONS? >> I HAVE ONE QUESTION. AS PART OF THE STANDARD, IS THAT INCLUSIVE OF INCORPORATING THE ETHNIC STUDIES ACROSS THE BOARD? >> ETHNIC STUDIES IS -- WILL BE ON THE TABLE. IT IS NOT PART -- OKAY. ETHNIC STUDIES IS DONE AT THE LOCAL. SO WE ARE ATTENDING CONFERENCES AND MOVING INTO ETHNIC STUDIES, BUT IT WAS NOT PART OF THE PILOT PROGRAM. IT IS NOT A TEXTBOOK LIKE ADOPTION. BUT IT IS ON THE TABLE FOR NEXT YEAR. >> RIGHT. BUT AS PART OF THE HISTORY AND SOCIAL SCIENCE, THE -- THAT'S PART OF THE INCLUSIVE PART OF THE STANDARD FOR THE STATE. IT WAS LEGISLATIVE MANDATE. RIGHT? >> [INAUDIBLE]. >> THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED TO HEAR. THANK YOU. >> I'M SORRY. THE ELEMENTARY PILOT TEACHER WRENCHED -- REFERENCED CULTURAL PERSPECTIVE. >> AND THERE MAY BE CONFUSION THAT THE ETHICS COURSE IS COMING, BUT MULTIPLE PERSPECTIVES IS WHAT YOU WERE LOOKING FOR. >> RIGHT. IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE CONTINUOUS. ETHNIC STUDIES IS IN EVERY COMPONENT IN THE EDUCATIONAL PROCESS. SO I WAS WONDERING IF AS PART OF THE TEXTBOOK IS IT EMBEDDED IN THAT. [00:45:03] THANK YOU. >> DO YOU WANT TO HAVE YOUR TEAM DO THEIR PRESENTATIONS? >> THE ONLY THING I LIKE TALKING ABOUT MORE THAN PEOPLE IS CURRICULUM. YAY. LET'S DO THIS. THE FOUR SHIFTS. I WANT TO TALK ABOUT THIS BECAUSE IT IS DRY IF YOU ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH SOCIAL SCIENCE. FOR DECADES THAT HAS BEEN LOOKED AT AS SOFT CURRICULUM. SCIENCE AND SOCIAL STUDIES ARE THE REASON ANYBODY WANTS TO LEARN TO READ AND WRITE ANYHOW. THIS NOW HAS FINALLY TAKEN A SHIFT AT MAKING THAT THE PRIORITY. THE CHALLENGE WITH SOCIAL SCIENCE IS IT IS MANDATED, BUT IT IS GOING TO BE LEFT UP TO DISTRICTS. LIKE THE LCAT, THEY WILL PUSH OUT HOW MUCH THEY PRIORITIZE. YOU REALLY HAVE PRIORITIZED DEMOCRACY. WE ARE SEEING THAT BECAUSE THAT ISN'T HAPPENING EVERYWHERE WE ARE RAISING A GENERATION THAT DOESN'T UNDERSTAND THEIR GOVERNMENT OR DEMOCRACY. BECAUSE THEY DON'T HAVE TO DO IT, THEY ARE GOING TO TAKE THEMSELVES OUT OF THE PROCESS BECAUSE WE HAVE MADE IT A PRIORITY IN THE DISTRICT AND I WANT TO ENCOURAGE THE DISTRICT BOARD TO MAKE THAT A CONTINUING PRIORITY. IT IS NOT SOFT CURRICULUM. IT IS THE CURRICULUM THAT DRIVES OUR NATION. THE SECOND THING THAT IS POWERFUL ABOUT THE SHIFT SALE IS INQUIRY. WE TALKED ABOUT THAT. THEY NEED TO BE ABLE TO WRITE IN THE CONTENT AREAS, BUT THIS IS THE FIRST TIME WE HAVE SEEN THE CURRICULUM DRY THAT. I HAVE TO TELL YOU THAT TEACHING ELA EVEN TO SMALL KIDS IT IS DRY. MOST OF THE CURRICULUM, IT IS GREAT. BUT IT IS NOT SUPER EXCITING. WHEN I OPENED UP THESE BOOKS, I CAN TAKE THE FOUNDATIONAL SKILLS OUT OF HERE. BUT ALL OF THE INQUIRY BASE AND ALL OF THE RESEARCH THEY HAVE TO DO, IT IS ORGANICALLY THERE. WHEN WE JUMP STANDARDS, THEY WANTED THE INFORMATIONAL TEXT. YOU ARE ON AMAZON TRYING TO FIND STUFF, BUT IT SHOULD BE THERE. THIS PROCESS HAS DONE A REALLY GREAT JOB. WHAT WE DID IN THE PAST WAS WE HAD CHILDREN LEARN ABOUT HISTORY. IT WAS PASSIVE. AND NOW WHAT THEY ARE ASKING CHILDREN TO DO IS DO HISTORY. PROJECT-BASED LEARNING IS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT'S A HIGH PRIORITY FOR DR. DARATI. THAT'S EMBEDDED IN HERE. STARTING AT KIPPEDDER GARDEN -- KINDERGARTEN, HOW DO YOU HAVE AN INQUIRY-BASED QUESTION AND THEN HOW DO YOU UNPACK IT? INSTEAD OF PUSHING INFORMATION TO KIDS THEY HAVE TO FIGURE OUT HOW TO GET TO THAT INFORMATION ON THEIR OWN. BY THE TIME THEY HIT HIGH SCHOOL THEY SHOW BE -- THEY SHOULD BE EXPERTS AT THAT. THEY ARE NOT JUST LEARNING INFORMATION, BUT THE CRAFT OF HOW THEY LEARN INFORMATION. AND THEN LITERACY, IT HAS BECOME A SHARED ENTERPRISE. IT IS NOT LIKE IT IS UP TO A TEACH TORE FIGURE OUT HOW TO GET THEM INTO IT. IT IS EMBEDDED IN THE CURRICULUM. AND CITIZENSHIP IS CRITICAL. I WANT TO MAKE A STRONG POINT THAT LEAH WAS A REALLY STRONG LEADER. WHEN WE ARE LOOKING AT THEORY OF ACTION, I WOULD HAVE TO SAY THAT YOU STUDIED THIS PROCESS YOU WOULD HAVE SEEN IT EMBEDDED IN THE PROCESS. LEAH DID A PHENOMENAL JOB AS OUR LEADER MAKING IT POSSIBLE. RATHER THAN SAYING I'M GOING TO FIGURE OUT WHAT YOU NEED TO DO. SHE SAID YOU NEED TO -- SHE GAVE A TASK. YOU HAVE TO FIGURE OUT WHAT CURRICULUM WILL BEST WORK FOR US. WHAT RESOURCES DO YOU NEED? WE SEPTEMBER -- WE KEPT SHIFTING THE RESOURCES WE NEED. EVERY TIME WE SHIFTED SHE DIDN'T GO OH GREAT. WHEN WE STARTED, IT WAS HARD TO SEE THE CURRICULUM. AND THEN WE GOT TO MOVE INTO PERSON. ANY TIME WE ASK FOR SOMETHING SHE MADE IT HAPPEN. SHE GAVE US ACCESS POINTS. AND NEVER COLORED IT WITH WHAT SHE THOUGHT WAS BETTER OR BEST. IF SHE IS WORKING WITH THE CURRICULUM PEOPLE I CAN IMAGINE YOU WOULD HAVE AN OPINION. WE NEVER KNOW WHAT HER OPINION WAS. ONE OF THE THINGS I CAN SAY ABOUT THE COMPANY WE PICKED WAS THE OTHER COMPANIES WERE MORE EMBEDDED IN THE 20TH CENTURY OF HOW WE DID CURRICULUM. IT WAS STATIC. THE TEXTBOOKS WERE FLAT. AS A KINDERGARTEN TEACHER I STOPPED TEACHING CURRICULUM WHEN SOMEBODY STARTS TEARING THE PAGE. I HAVE TO USE IT FOR 9 YEARS. I AM NOT FOCUSED ON TEACHING. I AM FOCUSED ON SAVE THE BOOK. THE COMPANY WE CHOSE, THE BOOKS ARE CONSUMABLE. YOUR BOOK IS FOR AND YOU YOU LIVE IN THE BOOK AND WRITE IN THE BOOK AND USE THE BOOK. THE TECHNOLOGY, WHEN WE HAD QUESTIONS AND WE QUESTIONED THINGS EVEN ABOUT THEIR BANK FOR ASSESSMENT THEY CHANGED IT. THEY CHANGED IT AS WE TOLD THEM WHAT WE HAD PROBLEMS WITH. THE OTHER COMPANY IS WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU BUY IS WHAT YOU GET. SAVIS WAS LOOKING AT IT. THEY HAD YOUNG LEADERS. OUR COMMITTEE IS VOLUNTARY. MAYBE SOME WERE VOLUN-TOLD, BUT WE DID IT BECAUSE WE LOVE IT. WE WERE DOING A DEEP DIVE AND NO PROBLEM. WE GET AN EARLY START AND YOU WILL SUNSET ONE AND KEEPING ONE. AND WHEN YOU LOOK AT CURRICULUM [00:50:03] IT IS LIKE DATING. YOU SAY THIS IS GREAT AND THIS IS GREAT AND THIS IS GREAT AND WE LIKE THIS. WE DON'T GET TO PUBLISH OUR OWN STUFF. NOW ALL OF THE PROGRAMS WERE VET THROUGH THE STATE. THEY ALL MET THE CRITERIA. WHEN WE ARE DOING THE -- BASICALLY WHEN WE ARE DOING THE QUANTITATIVE DAY -- DAY TAU LOOK THEY ALL MET THE CRITERIA. THEY DID IT, BUT THE ACCESS POINT -- THAT QUALITATIVE PIECE LIKE WHAT IS YOUR GUT FEELING. IF YOU TOOK A STRAW POLE WHAT WE ADOPT SAID WHAT WE LIKED FROM THE START. BUT THEN WE HAD A REASON WHY WE LIKED IT. THE OTHER THING THAT WAS VALUABLE WAS WHAT WAS ON OUR TEAM WAS AN ARRAY. WE HAD PEOPLE WHO TAUGHT SPECIAL ED. AND EVEN WHEN THEY SPOKE ABOUT IT, INFORMED THE REST OF US TO LOOK FOR THINGS WE DIDN'T EVEN KNOW TO BE AWARE OF THE. TO BE AWARE OF. JUST LIKE IN ALL OF THE OTHER CURRICULUM, AND THIS IS A PUBLISHER'S PROBLEM, THEY NEVER GOT IT RIGHT. IT MADE IT HARDER FOR THEM. EVEN THIS WAS A BEST ONE FOR THE ACCESS POINT. WHEN THEY COMMUNICATED THEY HAD A PROBLEM, THEY WERE WORKING TO FIX IT. THAT'S IMPORTANT FOR THE PROGRAMS WE ARE TRYING TO BUILD OUT. AND THEN WE HAD A VAST ARRAY OF REPRESENTATIVE -- REPRESENTATION OF AGE. WE HAD TEACHERS WHO TAUGHT FOR A LONGTIME AND TEACHERS WHO WERE BRAND-NEW. WE LOOKED AT THEM THROUGH THE LENS OF WHO WE WERE. THE TECHNOLOGY HAS TO BE ACCESSIBLE FOR THE KIDS. IF WE CAN'T ACCESS IT, THEY WON'T GET TO IT. YOU HAD A LOT OF -- YOU HAD A LOT OF IDEOLOGY THAT INFORMED THE DECISION IT WAS WELL DONE. IT WAS WHAT WILL TEACHERS USE. YOU CAN HAVE GREAT CURRICULUM, BUT IF IT SITS ON A SHELF AND NOBODY GETS TO IT IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW GREAT IT WAS. AMPLIFY HAD GREAT SCIENCE. IT WAS LIKE READING A ROCKET MANUAL. TEACHERS WERE LIKE, HOW AM I GOING TO GET TO IT? WE ONLY HAVE SO MUCH TIME. YOU HAVE TO BE ABLE TO GET TO IT QUICKLY. ONE OF THE THINGS WE LOVED WAS THAT IT WASN'T SO MUCH CONTENT. YOU DON'T DO IT BY BUILDING WOR. WE NEEDED THE PAPER TO BE THE DRIVER AND THE LAUNCHING PAD AND THAT'S WHAT SAVIS OFFERED US. ONE THING I WANT TO ENCOURAGE THE BOARD IS MAKE SURE THAT YOU PUT IN PLACE TRAINING. ONE TRAINING I HAD A LEADERSHIP MEETING AND I TOLD MY BOSS I AM JUST GONNA DROP IN THIS THING AND GO TO LEADERSHIP. AND THEN I TEXT HER, I'M NOT GOING TO LEADERSHIP BECAUSE I WILL NEVER KNOW HOW TO USE THIS MATERIAL IF I LEAD THIS MEETING. THE PLATFORM WHILE ACCESSIBLE, NONE OF THESE TECHNOLOGY PLATFORMS ARE EASY. ONCE THEY CODE THEM IT IS HARD AND YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER LIKE WHERE IS THE WAFFLE AND WHERE IS THE THIS AND THE THAT. THE OTHER THING THAT WAS VALUABLE IS WE LOOKED -- MOST OF US TAUGHT A LONGTIME. THE STANDARDS DIDN'T CHANGE SINCE 1980 I, BUT HISTORY HAS HAPPENED. 2008, BARACK OBAMA BECAME PRESIDENT. THAT'S PRETTY SIGNIFICANT SO WE NEED TO PUT THAT IN. WE ARE ANOTHER DECADE AND UH HALF SINCE THAT HAPPENED. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT IS IMPORTANT IS WE ARE LOOKING AT THE KIDS HAVING THE ACCESS POINT AND NEW TEACHERS ARE COMING. RIGHT NOW YOU HAVE AN AGING STAFF WHO KNOWS THE CONTENT. I BUILT A BUNCH OF ST*UF. STUFF. I DON'T I DON'T WANT MY NEW CURRICULUM TO TAKE THE PLACE OF WHAT I SPENT YEARS AND YEARS BUILDING. WE HAVE THE SAME CONSTITUTION AND SAME FLAG AND SAME SYMBOLS. NONE OF THAT CHANGED. IT COMPLEMENTS IT. WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN IS WE WILL HAVE TEACHERS WHO COME IN WITHOUT MY FILE CABINET AND MY KNOWLEDGE AND RESOURCES. WE NEED TO MAKE SURE WE GOT CURRICULUM LIKE A STRAIGHT LINE. THAT'S BETWEEN TWO POINTS IT IS A STRAIGHT LINE. SAVIS OFFERED THAT. YOU COULD AMEND IT BUT BE A TURN THE PAGE TEACHER. WE CAN'T JUST SUPPORT WHAT WE HAVE IN PLACE NOW. WE HAVE TOKING -- TO LOOK AT WHAT IS COMING NEXT. THOSE ARE THE REASONS WE PICKED IT AND I'M GUESSING BECAUSE THE OTHERS PICKED IT TO THERE IS CONTINUITY. ONE OF THE THINGS WE HAD FOR YEARS IS THE YOUNGER GRADES LOVED SOMETHING FOR ALL OF THE REASONS WE LOVED IT AND THE UPPER GRADES DIDN'T LIKE IT FOR THE REASONS WE LOVED IT. TO SEE THE PUBLISHING COMPANIES FINALLY LISTENING TO EVERYBODY AND PROVIDING A CONTINUUM. THE CONTINUITY, A COMPANY WILL BUILD OUT A PROCESS THAT WE STARTED IN KINDERGARTEN AND THEY CAN BUILD ON IT IN HIGH SCHOOL. WHEN WE SHIFT COMPANIES, SOMETIMES THE LINEAR PIECES DISAPPEAR AND NOBODY KNOWS TO FILL THEM IN. I'M SUPER HAPPY WE ARE BUYING CURRICULUM. IT HAS BEEN A VERY, VERY, VERY LONGTIME. SOME OF YOUR PUBLIC AND COMMUNITY WAS NOT HAPPY ABOUT THAT. BUT IT IS BETTER TO SPEND THE MONEY ON SOMETHING WE WILL NEED AND USE THAN TO JUST SPEND MONEY SO PEOPLE ARE HAPPY YOU BOUGHT SOMETHING. THE OTHER THING IS MOVING FORWARD, THIS IS A GOOD INVESTMENT OF OUR MONEY AND A GOOD INVESTMENT OF OUR TIME. [00:55:02] THIS IS AS EQUALLY IMPORTANT AS ALL OF THE OTHER SUBJECTS WE ARE TEACHING. THANK YOU SO MUCH AND THAT'S MY 25 CENTS WORTH AND NOBODY RANG A BELL. >> I THINK DR. ROBINSON YOU EVER COVERED -- I THINK DR. ROBINSON COVERED IT ALL. I WILL LEAVE YOU WITH TWO NUGGETS. WITH THE ADOPTION, ONE OF THE PUBLISHERS HAD THREE OF OUR NAMES IN THE BOOK AS REVIEWERS AND CONTRIBUTORS AND IT DID NOT MAKE OUR TOP TWO. MY NAME IS INCLUDED ON THAT. AND I DID NOT VOTE FOR IT EITHER. THAT TELLS YOU HOW CONFIDENT WE WERE IN THE OTHER BOOKS. THE SECOND THING IS I AM JUST EXCITED THAT STUDENTS WILL LOOK AT THE BOOK AND NOT THINK THAT GEORGE BUSH IS THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. THAT'S IT FOR MY PRESENTATION. >> SO I DID THE U.S. HISTORY AND I TEACH WORLD HISTORY. ONE OF MY COLLEAGUES, I DECIDED I COULDN'T DO PILOT 2 BOOKS AT THE SAME TIME. WE CHOSE SOLACE100% AND WE LOOKED AT EVERYTHING THAT WAS OUT THERE ON THE TABLE AND WE WENT WITH SOVIS. IT WAS THE ONE WE LIKED FROM THE START. THEY SAID YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT TWO. WE PILOTED THE ONE WE DID NOT LIKE FIRST. ONE OF THE THINGS MY COLLEAGUES AND I WERE UPSET ABOUT IS THE LACK OF SUPPORT FROM THE PUBLISHING COMPANY. THE LADY CAME IN AND SHE DID A QUICK THREE-HOUR PRESENTATION AND SHE HIT THE DOOR AND WE WERE LIKE WE HAVE QUESTIONS? I EMAILED HER AND SHE GOT BACK TO ME TWO WEEKS LATER AND I SAID HOW DO I PUT A UNIT TOGETHER? SHE WAS LIKE, OH, WELL YOU KIND OF PICK THIS AND PICK THIS. IT WAS ALL ONLINE. THAT'S GONNA TAKE ME A LONGTIME. I HAVE BEEN TEACHING HISTORY FOR A LONGTIME NOW AFTER MY CAREER IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL I GOT TO COME TO THE BIG KIDS. I FINALLY GOT OUT OF ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. IT WASN'T A BAD THING. THE SOLACE BOOK WAS 100%. ALL OF THE TEACHERS FROM BELLFLOWER AND MAYFAIR LOVED IT. A FRIEND DOES HISTORY AND SHE HELPED PILOT FOR HER KIDS. ONE OF THE THINGS I WAS IMPRESSED WITH IS THE ONLINE PLATFORM WE CHOSE IT UNANIMOUSLY 9-12TH GRADE. AS OUR KIDS START IN 9TH GRADE THEY WILL USE THE SAME PLATFORM THROUGH THEIR SENIOR YEAR. WHICH IS GREAT FOR ME SINCE I TEACH 11TH AND 11TH GRADE. THE PLATFORM WILL BE THE SAME. ONE OF THE THINGS THAT REALLY IMPRESSED ME WAS THEIR SUPPORT TEAM. ANY TIME THEY HAD A QUESTION THERE ARE TWO OR THREE ONLINE AND COME IN AND POP IN WHAT YOU NEED. ONE OF THE KEY THINGS WE ASKED FOR IS PERCENTAGE AND WE GRADE IN AREA OF POINTS. LITERALLY THE LADY GOT ON THE PHONE WITH TECH SUPPORT. HEY, HOW CAN WE FIX THE PROGRAM SO THEY CAN GRADE IN POINTS. HE SAID WE'LL WORK ON IT. SO WE'RE LIKE, OKAY. MINUS IS THAT -- MINUS THAT GLITCH, ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WAS SO GREAT OF HISTORY BOOKS, IN OUR BOOK OBAMA IS A SENATOR. IN THE GEOGRAPHY BOOKS, SOME OF THE COUNTRIES DON'T EXIST ANYMORE AND IN NEW ONES HAVE TAKEN THEIR PLACE. THEY DON'T TEACH BY CHAPTERS. THEY TEACH BY TOPICS. AND WE WERE IMPRESSED BY THAT. AND THEN THEY HAVE A SHORT VIDEO CLIP OF SOMEONE INTRODUCING IT AND IT GIVES THE KIDS, HERE IS YOUR GUIDE. HERE IS YOUR STAR IN THE SKY. WE ALL DEVELOP STUFF. THE RESOURCES HAD DISAPPEARED INTO WHO KNOWS WHERE. WE DIDN'T WANT TO GIVE THEM UP BECAUSE WE DID THEM BASED ON THE STANDARDS, BUT WE KNEW WOULD HELP WITH OUR KIDS. AND SO I WAS ABLE TO TAKE ALL OF MY POWER POINTS THAT I MADE OVER THE YEARS AND I CAN TAKE SOVIS AND COMBINE THEM AND IT TOLD THE STORY BETTER. [01:00:02] THAT'S WHAT HISTORY IS. IT IS A STORY. I TELL MY KIDS THE FIRST DAY OF MY CLASS, THIS IS THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD. YOU ARE GONNA HAVE MURDER, MAYHEM, DRAMA, YOU NAME IT AND IT'S GONNA BE THERE. IT IS A DISCOVERY. IT IS A JOURNEY. I TELL MY KIDS, I'M GONNA TEACH HISTORY AND TELL A STORY. THAT WAS HYSTERICAL. IT WAS HISTORICAL. THE STORY THAT GOES WITH THEM IS AWESOME. THE TEXTBOOK IS ONLINE. IT CAN BE TRANSLATED TO OVER 85 DIFFERENT LANGUAGES. WITH A CLICK OF A BUTTON ON THE DASHBOARD FOR KIDS. THAT'S AMAZING. ONE OF THE OTHER THINGS THAT IMPRESSED A LOT OF US IS PRIMARY SOURCES. THOSE ARE HUGE WHEN YOU TEACH HISTORY. I LOOKED AT THEIR SITE AND THERE ARE 82 INTERACTIVE PRIMARY SOURCES. 133 BIOGRAPHIES FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE. THAT'S SKWR*UZ THE U.S. -- THAT'S JUST THE U.S. HISTORY TEXTBOOK. THEY WILL MEET PEOPLE OF ALL WALKS OF LIFE, ALL COLORS AND RACES AND RELIGIONS. THEY WILL MEET THEM. WE ALWAYS SAY THE WORLD IS GETTING SMALLER AND THAT REALLY OPENS UP THE WORLD TO THESE KIDS. WE UNANIMOUSLY DECIDED IT WAS PERFECT -- IT WAS NOT PERFECT, BUT GOOD ENOUGH WE COULD GO 9 THROUGH 12TH GRADE. THEY LEFT IT UP TO US. NOT EVERY GRADE LEVEL HAS TO PICK THE SAME PUBLISHER. AS A TEACHER AND A VETERAN TEACHER, MOST FROM MAYFAIR WERE TEACHERS. I THINK WE FIGURED OUT THE LOWEST 10 AOU TEACHER IS 17 YEARS. LOWEST TEACHER IS 17 YEARS. I KNOW I'M ON MY FIVE-YEAR COUNTDOWN RETIREMENT. SO ARE MY COLLEAGUES. WHAT WE ALSO LOOKED AT IS IF YOU ARE A BRAND-NEW TEACHER COMING IN, THEY ARE NOT GOING TO HAVE ACCESS TO MY FILE CABINET. THEY CAN HIT THE GROUND RUNNING! YOU -- HERE IS THIS PART OF THE LESSON. IT IS COLOR CODED AND IT JUST MADE SENSE. MY KIDS LIKED IT. ONE OF THE BEST PIECES I HAD IS THE INTERACTIVE NOTE -- NOTEBOOK AND GOT AWAY FROM MULTIPLE CHOICE AND FILL IN THE BLANK. I FORCED THEM TO WRITE. AND THEY REALLY ROSE TO THE OCCASION AND I WAS SO PROUD OF THEM. ONE OF THE THINGS IT DOES IS IT HAS QUIZES AT EACH SECTION OF THE BOOK. I CAN TELL DID MY KIDS GET IT, DIDN'T THEY AND WHAT DO WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT. CHECKS FOR UNDERSTANDING ARE SUPER IN -- IMPORTANT WE HAVE KIDS THAT SPEAK ALL DIFFERENT LANGUAGES. I I HAVE KIDS IN MY CLASS WHO DON'T SPEAK ANY ENGLISH AND I FEEL BAD BECAUSE MY SPANISH IS UN PAQUITO. >> YOU HAVE KIDS THAT GO BACK AND FORTH FROM HOMES AND THEY DON'T HAVE AN EXTRA TEXTBOOK AT HOME. NOW IT ISN'T A PROBLEM. THEY WOULD COME IN AND SAY I COOPERATE DO MY HOMEWORK BECAUSE MY BOOK WAS AT THE OTHER PARENT'S HOUSE. NOW IT IS ONLINE AND THEY CAN ACCESS IT WHEREVER IT IS AT. WE JUST REALLY HOPE YOU WILL LISTEN TO US. I HIGHLY AGREE THAT TEACHERS ARE GOING TO NEED SOME TRAINING. SOVAS HAS BEEN GREAT ABOUT ANY SUPPORT WE NEEDED THROUGH THE PROCESS. THEY HAVE COME OUT AND HELD EXTRA PEG -- MEETINGS. YEAH WE HAVE TO GO AFTER SCHOOL, BUT IT IS OKAY. IT WAS WORTH IT. TO SEE THIS BOOK, AND HOPEFULLY IT IS NOT FOR ANOTHER 20 YEARS, BUT IN MY WORLD HISTORY BOOK 9/11 HASN'T EVEN HAPPENED. THERE'S A LOT OF THINGS THAT HAVE GONE ON. HISTORY DOES PRESIDENT STOP -- HISTORY DOESN'T STOP AND WE NEED OUR KIDS TO KNOW ABOUT THESE THINGS AND NOT JUST FROM SOCIAL MEDIA. FROM LEGITIMATE HISTORICAL SOURCES. WE HOPE YOU TAKE OUR ADVICE AND CHOOSE THIS ADOPTION. THANK YOU. [APPLAUSE]. >> BOARD MEMBER GARZA, I HAVE A QUESTION. >> YES. >> THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE PRESENTATION. I CAN JUST SEE HOW EXCITED YOU [01:05:03] ALL ARE ABOUT THIS. I KNOW HOW IT FEELS WHEN YOU GET A CURRICULUM THAT YOU REALLY -- ARE BELIEVING IN AND IS EXCITED ABOUT. THIS CURRICULUM, HOW LONG -- WHEN WE BUY THIS -- THE REASON I AM ASKING IS BECAUSE IT IS INTERACTIVE SO IT IS REALLY GONNA UPDATE. SO WE WILL NEVER EXPERIENCE THIS ISSUE OF OUTDATED INFORMATION BECAUSE IT IS INTERACTIVE AND IT WILL REMAIN CURRENT? >> I BELIEVE THEY WILL UPDATE -- [INAUDIBLE]. >> OKAY. HOW LONG ARE WE GONNA WORK WITH THIS CURRICULUM? >> SO WE TYPICALLY DO SEVEN OR EIGHT YEARS. >> IF IT CAN -- IF IT IS INTERACTIVE AND YOU GUYS HAVE THAT CONNECTION AND THEY ARE UPDATE -- ABLE TO UPDATE THINGS TO KEEP IT CURRENT THAT'S GOING TO BE EXCELLENT. AND I KNOW IT PROBABLY IS POSSIBLE. YOU KNOW UNIQUE LEARNING SYSTEMS , THE UNIQUE LEARNING SYSTEM, I LOVE THAT. IT HAS LIKE THE CURRENT NEWS, NEWS TO YOU. AND THERE WERE THINGS THAT COME UP AND I DO PRESCHOOL, PRESCHOOL AND KINDERGARTEN. FOR THEM TO GET UNITER CURRENT NEWS WITHIN A CURRICULUM, I WAS EXCITED. I DIDN'T MISS ANYTHING THAT WAS SPECIAL. >> I KNOW -- [INAUDIBLE] THEY GET PUSHED OUT A LOT -- [INAUDIBLE]. >> THAT'S EXCITING. THANK YOU SO MUCH. >> CAN I ASK WHO IS THE PRESIDENT -- HOW CURRENT IS THIS NEW TEXTBOOK? >> IT IS CURRENT. >> IT IS CURRENT. >> RIGHT NOW? >> YES. >> COOL. >> AND THERE IS PRINT IN THEIR Z BOOK. AND SO TO THE POINT THAT OUR TEACHERS ARE MAKING IS THAT THERE ARE UPDATES THAT COULD BE MADE. AND THE IMPORTANT PART IS WHEN YOU HAD SUGGESTIONS THEY TOOK THOSE. I KNOW THAT THERE HAS PW-PBLG -- THERE HAS BEEN CONCERN ABOUT HOW LONG THIS TEXTBOOK ADOPTION HAS TAKEN. OUR TEAM HERE AND MYSELF, WE DID A LITTLE RESEARCH TO SEE WHAT WAS IN THE WAY OF THAT AND THERE WERE THINGS IN THE WAY. STANDARDS DIDN'T CHANGE. IT WAS 1998. THE FRAMEWORK CAME OUT IN 2016. AND WHAT WAS GOING ON AT THAT TIME WAS IN JANUARY OF 2016 OUR DISTRICT WAS DOING ELA ADOPTION AS SOCIAL STUDIES WAS READY TO MAKE THE CHANGE WE WERE IN THE MIDDLE OF ELA ADOPTION AND THEN WE DID IMPLEMENTATION OF THE ADOPTION IN 1718. AND SCIENCE, THAT'S WHETHER -- WHEN IN 2018 THEY APPROVED TEXTBOOKS. YOU CAN SEE THE PATTERN OF WHAT HAPPENED HERE. WE PILOTED AND THEN WE USED BRIDGE MATERIALS AND ADOPTED IN 21 AND THEN IMPLEMENTED IN THE 21 AND 22 YEAR. MARCH OF 22 WHICH IS STILL IN THE 21 AND 22 YEAR IS WHEN WE STARTED THE PROCESS BECAUSE WE WANTED TO MAKE SURE IT HAPPENED. WE ARE TRYING TO CATCH UP FROM WHERE WE WERE BEFORE. >> A LOT OF ADOPTIONS. >> [INAUDIBLE]. >> AND I WOULD LIKE TO ELABORATE THAT THE STATE WASN'T EVEN DONE [01:10:03] VETTING THE PUBLISHERS UNTIL 2020. >> JUST A GENTLE REQUEST IF WE CAN HAVE ALL OF OUR TEACHERS AT THE PODIUM WHEN WE ARE SPEAKING SO WE CAN CAPTURE WHAT YOU ARE SAYING INTO THE MIC. WHEN YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY. THANK YOU SO MUCH. >> I WILL JUST ADD, LIKE I SAID, I I KNOW YOU MAY BE BEATING YOURSELF WHY NOT ADOPT IT FASTER? EVERYTHING THEY SAID IS ACCURATE. WHEN I WAS IN SANTA MONICA, MALIBU, WE WERE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE -- OF ADOPTING THE SOCIAL SCIENCE AS WELL. I REMEMBER THE FRAMEWORK -- THESE SHIFTS, ARE THE TEXTBOOK COMPANIES HAVE TO CATCH UP WITH THESE SHIFTS. AND THEN ONCE THEY DO THAT THEY HAVE TO START DOING THE RESEARCH AND GETTING PEOPLE TOGETHER AND START PRINTING. THEY WILL MAKE SOME COMPANIES -- THERE ARE SOME TEXTBOOK COMPANIES THAT SLAPPED A DESCRIPTION OF THE NEW AND SAID, HERE, IT IS DIFFERENT. WE DID THE RIGHT THING BY WAITING AROUND. I THINK MOVING FORWARD, I THINK IT IS GOING TO BE A LOT MORE QUICKER. I DON'T THINK THESE SHIFTS ARE GOING TO CHANGE FOR AWHILE. WE WILL BE ABLE TO ADOPT ONE EVERY SEVEN TO EIGHT YEARS. >> I HAVE A QUICK QUESTION. SO YOU HAVE RECOMMENDED THAT WE SHOULD UPGRADE EVERY SEVEN TO EIGHT YEARS. ARE THERE ANY OTHER SUBJECTS CURRENTLY THAT HAVE NOT BEEN UPDATED IN SEVEN TO EIGHT YEARS? >> THERE ARE. >> CAN YOU CLARIFY WHICH ONES PLEASE? >> ABSOLUTELY. OUR HEALTH BOOK HAS NOT BEEN UPDATED IN A LITTLE BIT. OUR WORLD LANGUAGE HASN'T -- IT WAS UPDATED IN THE 2016 ERA, BUT WE ARE ALSO LOOKING AT THAT. THERE HAS BEEN CHANGES THAT WE MIGHT WANT TO ADDRESS WITH A TEXTBOOKS OPTION. THOSE WOULD BE THE TWO MAIN ONES. >> IF THERE ARE OTHERS CAN I HAVE THOSE LISTED IN THE FRIDAY MEMO? THANK YOU. >> ABSOLUTELY. >> I HAVE A QUICK QUESTION. SINCE WE DID ADOPT THE ELA BACK IN 2016, WHERE ARE WE WITH THAT? WE ARE APPROVING TEXTBOOKS, BUT I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW AS A BOARD MEMBER HOW EFFECTIVE ARE THEY NOW? YOU KNOW, LOOKING BACK? ARE THE STUDENTS GETTING GREATER COME PRE -- COMPREHENSION IN READING AND LANGUAGE ARTS FROM THE BOOK ADOPTION? IF NOT WHEN IT COMES TIME TO REEVALUATE, WE SHOULD KNOW AS A BOARD THIS DIDN'T WORK AND WHY SO THAT WHEN WE LOOK AT FUTURE ADOPTIONS WE CAN BE MORE FOCUSED IN WHAT TO LOOK FOR AND WHATNOT TO LOOK FOR. >> THANK YOU. I'M NOT SURE THERE IS A QUESTION THERE, BUT THANK YOU FOR THE INFORMATION AND THE SUGGESTION. I THINK THAT IS TO THE POINT OF THE TEACHER THAT'S THEY KNOW THEIR TEXTBOOKS VERY WELL AND THEY BRING THAT TO THE TABLE. WHAT HAS WORKED AND WHAT HASN'T WORKED. 2016 HAS BEEN A LITTLE BIT. BUT THESE SHIFTS AREN'T GOING TO CHANGE MUCH. WE'VE GONE THROUGH THIS COMMON CORE SHIFT AND NOW WE ARE SORT OF LIVING IN HOW WE ARE MAKING SURE WE ARE IMPLEMENTING THAT WITH OUR STUDENTS. TO YOUR POINT IT IS IMPORTANT TO KNOW WHAT DID AND DIDN'T WORK WITH THE PREVIOUS ADOPTIONS OR TEXTBOOKS WHEN LOOKING AT THE NEW ONES. >> THE QUESTION IS THERE A TRANSFER OF KNOWLEDGE BASED ON THE ENGLISH TEXTBOOKS WE DID APPROVE? >> AND YOU CAN CHIME IN IN A MINUTE, BUT I THINK THERE IS MORE TO INSTRUCTION IN THE CLASSROOM THAN JUST THE TEXTBOOK ITSELF. THERE'S A LOT OF INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES AND PIECES OUR TEACHERS BRING TO THE TABLE TO MAKE SURE OUR KIDS ARE GETTING THAT TRANSFER. JUST THE TEXTBOOK ITSELF WOULD MAKE THE TRANSFER WITHOUT THE WORK OF THE TEACHERS. >> RIGHT. THE WHOLE CURRICULUM PACKAGE, JUST AS THIS ONE. >> THERE ARE THREE COMPONENTS TO THIS. YOU HAVE THE WRITTEN CURRICULUM WHICH IS WHAT IS IN THE TEXTBOOK, THE TOP CURRICULUM WHICH IS THE INSTRUCTOR BEING ABLE TO ADOPT THESE SHIFTS AND THEN LASTLY WHAT IS EVALUATED. ALL THREE OF THESE HAVE TO BE IN LINE TO ANSWER THE QUESTION. PART OF THE THEORY IS WE WILL MONITOR THAT. >> GOOD. >> CAN I ADD SOMETHING TO THAT? >> CURRICULUM IS A LITTLE LIKE YOUR PHONE. RIGHT NOW THE PHONE THAT YOU HAVE IS MEETING THE NEEDS THAT YOU HAVE. IN TWO YEARS YOU MIGHT HAVE ADDITIONAL THINGS THAT CAN ADD ON. WHEN THEY PUBLISH CURRICULUM, IT IS VALUABLE AND TIMELY AND PERTINENT. OUR DISTRICT AND ONE OF THE REASONS I CAME TO THIS DISTRICT IS BECAUSE THIS DISTRICT HAS NEVER BEEN A CURRICULUM-BASED DISTRICT. THIS DISTRICT HAS BEEN A STANDARDS-BASED DISTRICT. IT DOES MATTER. THE QUALITY OF THE KAU -- OF THE CURRICULUM IS IMPORTANT, BUT [01:15:02] STANDARDS HAVE DRIVEN THE INSTRUCTION. OUR DISTRICT HAS ALWAYS SAID WHAT ELSE DO WE NEED TO BEEF IT UP. AND YOUR TEACHERS' MOST IMPORTANT RESOURCE IN THE ROOM IS NOT THE BOOK. WHEN THEY -- THIS IS WHERE COLLABORATIVE TEAMS ARE CRITICAL AND IMPORTANT. YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND HIS KNOWLEDGE AND HER KNOWLEDGE ARE NOT NECESSARILY MY KNOWLEDGE. WE UNPACK AND LOOK AT CURRICULUM AND SAY THESE ARE OUR STANDARDS AND HOW DO WE GET TO WHERE WE ARE GOING? HERE IS POINT C. DO WE DO A, B AND DO WE DO A, D? WHEN WE SIT BACK COLLABORATIVELY WE LOOK AT THE BOOKS AND OPEN THEM UP AND USE WHAT PW*EGS SERVES OUR -- BEST SERVES OUR KIDS. ELA, IT IS THE SAME 26 LETTERS. THAT DIDN'T CHANGING AND THEY MAKE THE SAME SOUNDS AND MAKE THE SAME COMBINATION. A LOT OF US ARE NOT GOING TO RELY ON THAT BECAUSE MAYBE WE DON'T LIKE THE STORY. WE HAVE ALWAYS HAD ADDED ON THINGS AND WRITING. AND NOW THAT WE HAVE ANOTHER CURRICULUM WE ARE NOT GOING TO LIVE IN ONE LANE. YOU WILL PULL FROM ALL OF THE LANES AT THE SAME TIME. THE CURRICULUM IS NEVER THE IMPEDIMENT TO OUR LEARNING. WE WANT TO GET THE BEST WE CAN K THE TIME WE HAVE AND THE MONEY WE ARE GOING TO SPEND. >> ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? >> ACTUALLY, JUST TWO MORE QUICK ONES. THANK YOU, ALL, FOR ALL OF THE WORK YOU PUT INTO THIS. REAL QUICK, I HEARD 100% APPROVED. FOR MY OWN NOTES AND IF I DIDN'T CATCH IT I APOLOGIZE. HOW MANY TEACHERS PILOTED IT. >> ELEMENTARY, K-5 THERE WAS ABOUT 24 TEACHERS ON OUR PILOT ON AVERAGE. THEY WERE AFTER SKAOG -- AFTER SCHOOL MEETING SO 24 TO 28. IT DOES PRESIDENT MEAN -- IT DOESN'T MEAN THERE WASN'T MORE PILOTING AT THE SITES, BUT THAT'S WHO ATTENDETT THE -- ATTENDETT THE MEETINGS. WE HAD UP TO 20 AND ON AVERAGE THAT SHOWED UP TO THE MEETINGS WAS ABOUT 15 AND AT OUR SECONDARY LEVEL WE HAD ABOUT 15 TEACHERS. ON AVERAGE WE HAD ABOUT 7 OR 8 SHOW UP TO OUR PILOT MEETINGS. THANK YOU SO MUCH. >> AND IF YOU ARE THINKING THAT IS LOW, THAT IS CONSISTENT WITH MOST TEXTBOOK PILOTS. IF YOU THINK ABOUT IT, YOU HAVE A CURRICULUM THAT IS POSSIBLY TWO AND THE CURRENT CURRICULUM, THAT'S THREE SETS. GOD BLESS THOSE 26 FOLKS BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT GOING TO MEET A LOT OF PEOPLE TO VOLUNTEER TO DO THAT. >> FOR SOME OF OUR TEACH -- TEACHERS PILOTING THE BOOK AND SOME ARE COACHES. SO AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL THEY HAVE PRACTICE AND GAMES AFTER SCHOOL. WE WERE MEETING 4 TO 5:30 AFTER THE SCHOOL DAY SO A LOT OF THEM COULDN'T COME. SO IT WASN'T THAT THEY WEREN'T GIVING US THEIR FEEDBACK AS THEY WERE PILOTING THE BOOKS. KEEP THAT IN MIND IF YOU SAY NOT MANY CAME. >> I KNOW IT IS A LOT OF WORK. >> LET ME ADD ONE MORE THING. THE CURRICULUM WAS ON EVERY SITE. EVERY SINGLE SITE HAD THE CURRICULUM AND IT WAS IN -- IT WAS IN MOST OF THE ELEMENTARY IT IS PUT IN THE ROOM WHERE THEY EAT LUNCH AND THEY TAKE BREAKS. IT WAS ON TABLES AND ALL ACCESSIBLE. YOU DIDN'T HAVE YOUR GRADE LEVEL BECAUSE THEY HAD SAMPLES, BUT ANY TEACHER AT ANY TIME COULD GO THROUGH ANYTHING. AND THE COMPANIES WERE WILLING -- IF YOU SAID I TEACH FIFTH GRADE AND I DON'T SEE FIFTH GRADE THEY WOULD SEND A FIFTH GRADE BOOK. WE TALKED AND WE WERE GIVEN OPPORTUNITIES TO TALK ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON WITH TEXTBOOK ADOPTION. IT WASN'T LIKE 20 PETE -- 20 PEOPLE SAT IN A ROOM. THEY SAID I TRUST YOU AND GIVE ME THE BEST MATERIAL BECAUSE IT IS LIKE DRINKING FROM A FIRE HOSE. EVERYBODY HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE IT AND PREVIEW IT AND PARTICIPATE AND ASK QUESTIONS THROUGHOUT THE PROCESS. >> THANK YOU. >> I DO HAVE A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR TIME AND EFFORTS AND DOING THIS FOR OUR DISTRICT. HAVING PART OF BEEN ONE MYSELF, I UNDERSTAND THE HOURS OF DEDICATION THAT IT TAKES SO THANK YOU SO MUCH. MY FIRST QUESTION IS DO WE KNOW -- I THINK ONE OF YOU DID SAY THE STUDENTS LIKED IT, BUT I WANT TO CONFIRM THAT WHAT WAS THEIR REACTION TO THIS BOOK WHEN YOU WERE USING IT? >> BACK AT THE MIC. I ACTUALLY TOLD MY STUDENTS EXACTLY WHAT WE WERE GOING TO BE DOING AND THIS WOULD BE THE [01:20:01] CURRICULUM FOR A LONGTIME. THEY HAD A BIG VOICE IN IT. IT WAS OVERWHELMING. 90 TO 95% OF THE STUDENTS WENT WITH THE CURRICULUM WE TKHOES. WE CHOSE. AND THEY WERE EXCITED BECAUSE WE SPENT A LITTLE TIME WITH THE OLD, OLD TEXTBOOK. AND TO SEE THAT SHIFT AND THE TECHNOLOGY AVAILABLE AND THE INTERACTIVE MATERIAL AS WELL AS THE CURRENT EVENTS THAT WERE THERE IT WAS CLEAR TO THEM THAT THIS WAS MUCH BETTER THAN WHAT THEY HAD. AND BETWEEN THE TWO, AGAIN, THERE WAS A CLEAR WINNER FOR US AS WELL. >> THANK YOU. BOARD MEMBER CHRISTOPHER IS THERE SOMETHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD FROM YOUR PERSPECTIVE? I'M ASSUMING YOU ALSO -- WAS THIS BOOK IN YOUR CLASSROOM? >> NO. I HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF BEING IN AP SOCIAL SCIENCES FOR ALL OF MY HIGH SCHOOL CAREER. WE ADOPTED AP SOCIAL SCIENCE TEXTBOOKS PRIOR TO THIS ACADEMIC YEAR. MY GOVERNMENT TEACHER WENT OVER OUR AP TEXTBOOK, BUT I WASN'T TOO FAMILIAR WITH WHAT WAS GOING ON WITH OUR STANDARD CLASSES. I FELT KIND OF LOST WHEN WE WERE TALKING ABOUT THOSE TEXTBOOKS THAT HAD OBAMA IN THEM. I TALK -- I HEARD ABOUT MY FRIENDS TALKING ABOUT IT. I WOULD THINK HOW COME THEY WERE NOT UPDATED. I WILL ALSO ADD SINCE YOU WANT SOMETHING OUT OF ME, I WAS GOING TO LET DR. DROTI EXPLAIN THIS WHEN HE WENT OVER THEORY OF ACTION, BUT TO GET TO DR. ELHESSEN SUCCESS -- DR. ELHESSEN'S QUESTION OF THEY SEURBT -- THE EFFICIENCY OF THE TEXTBOOK WITH DAY -- DATA. PART OF DR. DROTI'S THEORY OF ACTION IS HAVING AN ACADEMIC YEAR BE SPLIT INTO THE FOUR BLOCKS 4* AND THEN WE GO OVER WITH STUDENT ADVISORY GROUPS HOW THEY ARE RESPONDING TO CERTAIN CURRICULUM. ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS WE TRIED TO TACKLE ARE THE SCIENCE TEXTBOOKS. WE TALKED ABOUT -- I WAS LIKE WHAT WAS GOING ON WITH THE SCIENCE TEXTBOOKS? THERE ARE PERIODIC EVALUATIONS. I THINK THE FIRST YEAR THERE IS A CHECK IN ON HOW EFFECTIVE THAT WAS. THAT MAY HAVE BEEN A LITTLE MORE IN INFOR -- INFORMAL. I WILL POSE THE QUESTION, IS THAT SET IN STONE? IS THERE A CHECK IN EVERY YEAR FOR HOW AN IMPLEMENTED TEXTBOOK IS PERFORMING OUTSIDE WHAT DR. DROTTI IS EVALUATING? I KNOW HIS IS A PERIODIC EVALUATION. >> OUR CHECKS ON HOW STUDENTS ARE DOING ARE LESS ABOUT THE TEXTBOOK AND HOW THE TEXTBOOK IS PERFORMING WITH STUDENTS AND MORE ABOUT HOW OUR STUDENTS ARE DOING ON THEIR STATE CLASS -- STATE TEST OR CLASSROOMS AND THE KLASS ROOM HAS MORE THAN THE TEXTBOOK ITSELF. >> IT IS THE STATE TESTING WHERE ADMINISTRATION INFERRED WHAT IMPACT THE TEXTBOOKS ARE HAVING. THAT MAKES SENSE. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO DR. DROT TI AND THE THEORY OF ACTION I'M PHRAU MINTING -- IMPLEMENTING IT IN THERE. WE WILL LOOK AT NEWLY-ADOPTED CURRICULUM. THIS IS TO ASSESS THE DEEPER SCALE. >> YEAH. CHRIS MENDOZA, HE MAY BE SPENDING TIME TOGETHER. HE SIN TREEINGED AND I'M INTRIGUED -- HE IS INTRIGUED AND I AM INTRIGUED AND WE HAVE A LOT IN COMMON. THE STUDENT VOICE IS IMPORTANT. IT CAN HELP US TRANSFORM AND HELP US MAKE ADJUSTMENTS. SOMETIMES WE THINK WE ARE TWO STUDENTS AND WHACKER -- AND WORKING. I WOULD THINK THOSE WOULD BE MORE EQUAL -- QUALITATIVE CONVERSATIONS WE WOULD HAVE BESIDES LOOKING AT TEST SCORES. >> WONDERFUL. THANK YOU FOR THE INFORMATION. LOVE TO SEE THAT COME TO FRUITION. MY NEXT TKWE -- QUESTION HAS TO DO WITH THE TRANSLATIONS FOR THE DUAL TEENS. ARE THOSE LOOKED AT WITH MORE OF A FINE-TUNE LENS SO THEY ARE [01:25:04] APPROPRIATELY TRANSLATED? A LOT OF TIMES WE FIND AS TEACHERS IN AI SAYS IT KIND OF SAYS WHAT IT IS SUPPOSED TO SAY, BUT IN THE TRANSLATION IT MAKES NO SENSE. >> WE DID HAVE DUAL TEACHERS PARTICIPATING. TCI HAD A VERY, VERY STRONG TRANSLATION. IT IS AN UH THEN -- AN AUTHENTIC TRANSLATION. OUR TEACHERS WERE REALLY, REALLY HAPPY TO HERE. SOMETIMES IT COMES OUT A LITTLE DIFFERENT. SOVIS ALSO HAD -- IT DID NOT HAVE A TEAM, BUT THEY CAME OUT STRONG WITH THE DUAL TEACHERS. THERE WAS NOT ONE DUAL TEACHER THAT OPPOSED THE SOVIS PROGRAM. SO I COULDN'T GIVE UH GOOD VALUE BECAUSE I WASN'T LOOKING AT IT THROUGH THAT LENS BECAUSE I DON'T SPEAK A SECOND LANGUAGE. OUR DUAL TEACHERS THAT WERE REPRESENTATIVE WAS HAPPY WITH WHAT THEY SAW. THE ONLY GLITCHES AND YOU CAN SEE IT IN THE TESTIMONIAL IS MORE PLATFORM AND NOT CONTENT OR HOW IT WAS RELAYED TO STUDENTS. IT WAS MOVING AROUND THE TECHNOLOGY PLATFORM. THAT TENDED TO BE THE ONLY HICCUP IN THE DUAL PROGRAM. >> THANK YOU. MAYBE PERHAPS WE CAN PULL IN SOME OF THOSE TEACHERS AND SEE IF THERE ARE ANY OTHER RESOURCES WE NEED TO GET THEM TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE MEETING THE REQUIREMENTS. THANK YOU. MY NEXT QUESTION IS WITH THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THIS NEW PROGRAM, HOW LONG ARE WE GOING TO BE HAVING SAVIA -- SAVIS TRAIN OUR TEACHERS? DO THEY COME BACK EVERY YEAR FOR A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF YEARS? PERIODICALLY? >> RIGHT NOW WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF GETTING THE JOHN BOARDING -- THE ON BOARDING READY FOR SUMMER. FOR SURE WE WILL BE ON BOARDING FOR THE START OF THE SCHOOL YEAR WHEN WE TALK WITH THE PUBLISHER WE ARE WAITING FOR CTF APPROVAL AND BOARD APPROVAL BEFORE WE CAN SOLIDIFY AND THEN WE ARE LOOKING AT WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS TO SUPPORT OUR TEACHER AND STUDENTS WITH THESE PUBLISHERS. >> AND SO THEN WE ARE GONNA WAIT UNTIL WE GET THE ON BOARDING DONE, IF I'M JUST -- FOR MY CLARIFICATION, AND THEN WE WILL GO FORWARD TO SEE HOW OFTEN WE WOULD NEED TOSS THOEPL FROM SALAS. >> I WOULD ASSUME. WE ARE MOVING TO A FULLY ONLINE TECH PROGRAM THAT THEY WILL NEER YOUNGER TEACHERS DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM MOVING AROUND THE PLATFORM. THEY NEVER LIVED WITHOUT TECH. FOR THEM IT IS QUITE SIMPLE. IT IS GETTING THE OLDER TEACHERS COMFORTABLE TO MOVE AROUND THE PLATFORM. THE YOUNGER WILL WORK IN TANDEM AND THE YOUNGER TEACHERS WILL NEED THE INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORT AND WHAT THAT INSTRUCTION IS GOING TO LOOK LIKE. THEIR JOB IS TO MEET THE FRAMEWORK AND STANDARDS AND THE CURRICULUM IS JUST ON TOOL. THEY CAN HELP OUR OLDER TEACHERS WITH MOVING AROUND THE TEXT PLATFORM. IT IS GOING TO BE A REALLY NICE PARTNERSHIP. NEXT QUESTION IS SR ON BOARDING, IS IT GOING TO BE OPTIONAL OR ARE WE GOING TO HAVE OUR TEACHERS COME IN BY A CERTAIN DATE SO THEY CAN IMPLEMENT THIS CURRICULUM? >> YOU ARE READING OUR MINDS. WE ARE IN DISCUSSIONS ABOUT HOW WE WILL MAKE SURE WE WILL MOVE FORWARD WITH THAT WORKING WITH THE COMPANY. THAT'S THE PLANNING PROCESS WE ARE IN RIGHT NOW. >> PERFECT. THANK YOU. >> I HAVE A QUICK QUESTION -- I'M SORRY. I DON'T WANT TO INTERRUPT YOUR TRAIN OF THOUGHT. >> NO. I'M DONE. THANK YOU. >> AS DR. ADRATI REMINDED US ALL, STUDENT DRIVEN AND I WANTED TO FIND OUT ESPECIALLY FOR OUR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES AND EVERYONE HAS A DIFFERENT LEARNING STYLE. IS THERE EXAMPLES FOR TEACHERS TO ACCOMMODATE STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES GIVEN THEIR LEARNING STYLE AND IF THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO GRASP THE KNOWLEDGE AND APPLY IT AS ABLE BODIED STUDENTS. >> I WILL LET OUR TEACHERS SPEAK TO THAT AND THEN I WILL EXTEND AND ELABORATE ON ANYTHING THEY -- SINCE THEY WORKED WITH IT WITH THE STUDENTS. >> ONE OF MY COLLEAGUES, SHE [01:30:03] DOES -- SHE DID THE U.S. HISTORY FOR OUR RSP CLASS, THE SMALL CLASS. THE ASSESSMENTS COME IN THREE LEVELS. AND THE PRIMARY SOURCES. IT IS NOT A GREAT VOICE, BUT IT CAN BE READ TO THE STUDENTS. IF THEY HAVE A PRIMARY SOURCE, IT CAN BE READ TO THEM. LIKE I SAID, IT IS NOT A GREAT VOICE -- AND SHE FOUND SHE COULD GIVE SOME TESTS BASED ON THE LEVELS FOR STUDENTS. WE WORKED ON U.S. HISTORY. SHE GETS WHAT I HAVE AND WE FIGURE OUT AN A AND B VERSION OF A TEST AND PRIMARY SOURCES. SHE WOULD COME AND PICK MY BRAIN AND HELP ME RESOURCE. SHE PILOTED THIS BOOK IN HER CLASS AND FOUND FOR HER KIDS, ESPECIALLY A LOT OF THE VIDEO COME PENNANTS WERE SHORT -- COMPONENTS WERE SHORT. SO NO PROBLEM ATTENTION-WISE IN THE SMALL CLASSROOM AND STKPWR*US -- JUST A LOT OF LEVELED MATERIALS SHE COULD REACH. SOME OF HER KIDS WERE HIGHER AND SOME WERE NOT -- KIND OF LIKE HIGH, MEDIUM LOW. AND WITH THIS CURRICULUM SHE COULD MEET THE NEEDS. ESPECIALLY YOU WANT TO KNOW WHERE YOUR KIDS ARE COMING IN AT. SHE WAS ABLE TO DO THAT. AND SHE USED THE QUIZES THAT I MENTIONED TOO. OFTEN TIMES THE OTHER DOCUMENTS COULD BE READ TO THE STUDENTS. >> SO SHE FOUND THAT STUDENTS WERE ENGAGED IS WHAT I WANT TO HEAR. >> YES. YEAH. AND THIS PUBLISHER HAS PUT TOGETHER SOME PHENOMENAL VIDEOS THAT LINEUP WITH OUR CURRICULUM. I DON'T HAVE TO SPEND MY TIME SEARCHING, BUT I DO. I WILL SHOW IT NEXT WEEK, A VIDEO ABOUT LIQUID. I'M IN THE 1950S SUBURBAN AND LIQUID WAS A MASTER PLANNED COMMUNITY POST WORLD WAR II. KIDS SAY, I LIVED ON THAT STREET. LAKEWOOD SHOWS UP IN THE U.S. HISTORY CURRICULUM. >> AND THE OTHER THING THAT IS VALUABLE ABOUT IT BEING TECHNOLOGICALLY BASED -- BECAUSE WE DID HAVE -- IN ELEMENTARY WE HAD A SPECIAL ED TEACHER WHO DID PILOT IT AND SHE FOUND IT VERY ACCESSIBLE -- SHE FOUND SAVIS ACCESSIBLE. INSTEAD OF TAKING SIX BOOKS HOME OR FIVE BOOKS HOME THE ONLINE PLATFORM LETS HER JUMP INTO WHATEVER LEVEL SHE NEEDS TO ACCESS. BECAUSE IT IS PROGRESS LEARNING IT IS A GAME CHANGER FOR EVERYBODY. AND NOW I CAN GIVE YOU AN INQUIRY-BASED QUESTION AND THE QUESTION CAN STAY STATIC, BUT HOW WE UNPACK IT CAN BE WHEREVER YOU AND HOWEVER YOU CAN DEMONSTRATE THE MASTERY. AND THERE IS A RUBEIRC BUILT IN. THERE ARE WAYS TO MAKE ASSESSMENTS ON HOW THE INFORMATION GETS ACROSS. IT IS NOT THAT YOU ARE GOING TO TAKE THIS ONLINE TEST. THAT IS NOT GOING TO WORK FOR THE KIDS. IT IS EMBEDDED INTO IT AND A LOT OF THE HEAVY LIFTING WILL BE DONE. IF I DON'T KNOW THAT IT IS THERE AND I DON'T KNOW HOW TO FIND IT, I'M NOT GOING TO USE IT. FOR THE SPECIAL ED TEACHERS THEY ARE GOING TO HAVE TO HAVE THAT SUPPORT AND THE LEAN BACK SUPPORT. I'M STILL CALLING SAYING I CAN'T FIND IT. I USE IT ROUTINELY, BUT I DON'T USE IT FOR FOUR DAYS AND I FORGET WHERE TO GO. FOR THEM THE TRAINING AND SUPPORT WILL BE CRITICAL. BUT IT'S ALL THERE. IT IS A MATTER OF FIGURING OUT WHICH COMPARTMENT IT SITS IN AND HOW YOU ACCESS IT. >> THANK YOU. >> JUST A GENTLE REMINDER THAT WE HAVE DI TEACHERS AT THE SECONDARY LEVEL. >> THANK YOU. >> WE DID AT THE SECONDARY LEVEL HAD TWO DUAL IMMERSION TEACHERS AS AN AFTER PART OF THE PROCESS AND THEY WERE INVOLVED AND WERE HAPPY WERE -- WITH THE KAU REC -- CURRICULUM. >> AND THAT GOES 6-8. TO TAG ON TO YOU ELEMENTARY DI TEACHER THAT WAS PART OF THAT AS WELL, I WAS ABLE TO SEE THAT IN THE CLASSROOM AND IT WAS AMAZING TO BE ABLE TO SEE IT. HAPPY IT WAS WORKING SO WELL. >> PERFECT. [01:35:01] THANK YOU SO MUCH. >> SO WHAT IS THE ADOPTION FOR HIGH SCHOOL? >> 9-12SAVIS AND 7-8 IS TCI AND K-5 IS SAVIS. >> I DO WANT TO POINT OUT ALSO THAT WE DO HAVE A SECONDARY TEACHER THAT PILOTED AND WHEN I READ THAT IT SAYS THAT THE LESSONS WERE EASILY DIFFERENTIATED FOR ALL LEARNING STYLES WITHOUT COMPROMISING THE RIGOR, AND I TAKE THIS AS A TRUE STATEMENT BECAUSE I DO SPECIAL EDUCATION AND MY CHILDREN CAN LEARN, DEPENDING ON HOW YOU PRESENT IT, YOU WOULD BE SURPRISED. I'M TAKING THAT TO BE ABSOLUTELY TRUE. EXCEPTIONAL AND EASILY DIFFERENTIATED ITSELF. I'M EXCITED. >> LAST ONE FROM ME, MADAM PRESIDENT. AS FAR AS PROCESS GOES, I DID SEE THAT IT WAS PRESENTED TO CTF IN FEBRUARY. TWO QUESTIONS HOW LONG DID THEY HAVE THE MATERIALS FOR AND WHAT WAS THE RESULT OF THAT? I UNDERSTAND IT WAS PRESENTED HERE. WAS IT THE SAME PRESENTATION? >> EXACT SAME PRESENTATION AS TONIGHT. THEY HAD THE MATERIALS AT DISTRICT OFFICE TO REVIEW THE WEEK BEFORE. ONE MEMBER OF CTF DID GO AND REVIEW THE MATERIALS AND IT WAS ALL EXCEPT ONE WHO ABSTAINED AND HE WAS NEW TO THE PROCESS AND DIDN'T WANT TO CAST A VOTE BECAUSE HE DIDN'T FEEL COMFORTABLE ENOUGH. THAT BEING HIS VERY FIRST MEETING AND ALL OF THE REST VOTED YES, I GUESS. >> THANK YOU. >> JUST TO BE CLEAR, ONLY ONE OF THEM ACTUALLY LOOKED AT THE BOOK. >> THAT I SAW WHILE I WAS IN THE OFFICE. >> THAT'S CORRECT. WE HAD THEM AVAILABLE AND HAD THE DIGITAL PLATFORM AVAILABLE ON LAPTOPS, BUT ONLY ONE OPTED TO COME IN TO LOOK. >> WERE THEY INFORMED OF THE ABILITY TO LOOK AT THE MATERIAL. >> THEY RECEIVED A MEMO THAT WENT OUT ON FEBRUARY 3RD LETTING THEM KNOW THERE WAS A WINDOW FOR THEM TO BE ABLE TO COME FEBRUARY 7TH THROUGH FEBRUARY 14TH AND WE WERE ACCOMMODATING FOR ANYBODY -- THE ONE THAT CAME WANTED TO COME AT A DIFFERENT TIME AND IT WAS OUTSIDE WORK HOURS FOR OUR STAFF AND WE SAID ABSOLUTELY WE WILL LET YOU DO THAT. THEY OPTED TO COME A LITTLE EARLY AND SPENT TIME UNTIL THE CTF MEETING WAS THERE AND BE -- AND WE WERE CHECKING IN TO SEE IF THEY HAD QUESTIONS WE WOULD BE AVAILABLE. >> THANK YOU. >> ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? THANK YOU. THANK YOU FOR A VERY THOROUGH PRESENTATION. >> [INAUDIBLE]. >> GREAT JOB. THANK YOU FOR TAKING YOUR TIME AND COMING. >> THANK YOU, STAFF. GOOD JOB. [APPLAUSE]. >> DO WE HAVE OTHER PRESENTATIONS? >> YES. OUR NEXT PRESENTATION IS A SECOND INTERIM REPORT I WILL TURN IT OVER TO MR. HALGEN WHO WILL TAKE US THROUGH THE PRESENTATION. >> THANK YOU. TONIGHT THE BOARD WILL CERTIFY THE FINANCIAL CONDITION OF THE SECOND INTERIM. BEFORE WE GET STARTED WITH THE FISCAL INFORMATION REGARDING THE SECOND INTERIM, I WANTED TO REVIEW HOW THE BUDGET CYCLE AND THE REPORTING CYCLE OF THE SCHOOL DISTRICT WORKS. THE BUDGET CYCLE IS A FLUID AND CONTINUOUS PROCESS. IT STARTS WITH BUDGET ADOPTION FOR THE UPCOMING FISCAL YEAR PRIOR TO JULY 1ST. THE REVENUE AND EXPENDITURES FOR THE FISCAL YEAR START ON JULY 1ST. EVEN THOUGH THE FISCAL YEAR IS IN PROGRESS FOR THE NEW ACADEMIC YEAR WE ARE CLOSING THE BOOKS FOR THE PREVIOUS FISCAL YEAR. CONCURRENTLY REVISIONS TO THE NEW FISCAL YEAR BUDGET MAY BE HAPPENING. IN SEPTEMBER, AN -- UNAUDITED ACTIONS LOOK AT HOW THE PREVIOUS FISCAL YEAR-ENDED. IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT THESE ARE CALLED UNAUDITED ACTUALS BECAUSE OUR FINAL AUDIT HAS NOT YET TAKEN PLACE. AND TONIGHT WE ARE HERE AT THE PHASE OF OUR SECOND INTERIM. IN THE FIRST INTERIM WHEN THE NEW BOARD MEMBERS WALKED IN YOU WERE LOOKING AT INFORMATION ON YOUR FIRST MEETING ALL THE WAY THROUGH OCTOBER 31ST. [01:40:02] TONIGHT YOU WILL LOOK AT INFORMATION THROUGH JANUARY 31ST WHICH IS THE MID-POINT. AND THIS HELPS US IN PREPARATION FOR THE 23/24 FISCAL YEAR. IT IS A GOOD HALFWAY MARK. THE SECOND INTERIM REPORTING LIKE OTHER INFORMATION SHARED IN THE PREVIOUS SLIDE ARE PART OF EDCO REQUIREMENTS. THEY ARE INTENDED TO PROVIDE AN EARLY INTERVENTION WARNING SYSTEM TO INDICATE WHETHER THE DISTRICT CAN MEET THE CURRENT OR FUTURE YEARS FINANCIAL OBLIGATION. IT IS STANDARDIZED FOR ALL SCHOOL DISTRICTS USING A STANDARDIZED CODING STRUCTURE. SO HERE WE BEGIN TO LOOK AT THE NUMBERS. WHAT YOU HAVE IN FRONT OF YOU ARE THE REPORT THAT THIS PROVIDES IS THE BOARD APPROVED OPERATING BUDGET COMPARED TO THE PROJECTED YEAR TOTALS. THE VARIANCE -- THE VARIANCES ARE DUE TO CHANGES IN THE LOCAL CONTROL FUNDING FORMULA KNOWN AS LCFF WHICH IS HOW WE GET OUR FUNDING CALCULATOR THAT WE RECEIVE ALONG WITH OTHER UPDATED REVENUE BECAUSED ON YEAR TO DATE ACTUAL INFORMATION. THE BIGGEST VARIANCE FOR US WHICH WE PROJECTED TO INCREASE BY ROUGHLY 2.5 MILLION IS DUE TO HIGHER REVENUE COMING IN FROM INTEREST. OUR OTHER NUMBERS ARE STEADY. DUE TO CHANGES IN THE LOCAL CONTROL FUNDING FORMULA CALCULATOR. >> I KNOW IT IS SMALL ON THE SCREEN, BUT YOU HAVE IT IN FRONT OF YOU ON YOUR PRESENTATION THERE. AND HERE YOU ARE LOOKING AT THE PROJECTED BUDGET VERSUS THE PROJECTED ACTUALS THAT ALLOW US TO LOOK AT YEAR TO DATE INFORMATION AND PROVIDES YOU SOME PREDICT TIFF FORECASTING BASED ON CASH FLOW INFORMATION. I WANTED YOU TO HAVE IT ALL IN FRONT OF YOU WHICH I APOLOGIZE WERE IT IS SO SMALL, BUT TO HELP IT MAKE MORE SENSE. THE PROJECTED YEAR BUDGET IS STATIC THROUGHOUT THE YEAR FOR REVENUES AND EXPENDITURES. DURING THIS REPORTING ALL CARRY OVER EXPENDITURES HAVE BEEN BUDGETED. WHAT THAT MEANS IS IF THERE WAS ANY CARRY OVER -- CARRYOVER FUNDS FROM THE PREVIOUS YEAR IT HAS BEEN BUDGETED THAT WILL INCREASE YOUR EXPENDITURES, NOT YOUR REVENUE SINCE CARRY OVER FUNDS IS NOT NEW MONEY. IT IS MONEY FROM THE PREVIOUS FISCAL YEAR. IT IS BASED ON THE CURRENT FISCAL YEAR ALLOCATIONS. THE TOP NUMBERS YOU CAN SEE THERE, AGAIN, THAT'S JUST ALL OF THE NEW REVENUE FOR THIS FISCAL YEAR. BOTH FOR RESTRICTED AND UNRESTRICTED BASED ON THE FUNDING. WHEN WE LOOK AT THIS CLOSER YOU CAN SEE THE PROJECTED YEAR REVENUE IS A LITTLE OVER 195 MILLION AND THAT IS YOUR YEAR TO DATE ACTUALS. THAT'S THE WAY THE STATE PROVIDES OUR A -- OUR UH POSSIBLER -- OUR UH -- APPORTION MEANT. THAT'S YEAR TO DATE REVENUES WE HAVE RECEIVED. THE PROJECTED YEAR EXPENDITURES ARE SLATED TO BE $2 THRE 5 -- 235 MILLION 866,860 AND IT INCLUDES ALL CARRY OVER BUDGETED EXPENDITURES. SOME OF THEM DON'T HAVE NEW REVENUE, BUT THEY ARE BUDGETED FROM ONE-TIME FUNDS AND MONEY FROM THE PREVIOUS FISCAL YEAR. AS OF JANUARY 31ST, 86 MANAGE -- 86 MILLION 385, 599 HAS BEEN EXPENDED. WE TAKE THE INFORMATION AND KNOW WE HAVE ANOTHER SIX MONTHS TO GO FOR THIS FISCAL YEAR AND WE ARE EMPLOYING YOU WHAT -- PROVIDING PREDICT TIFF FORECASTING OF WHERE WE THINK WE WILL END THE YEAR ON THE YEAR TO DATE EBGDZ PENNED TOURS. EXPENDITURES. WHILE IT SHOWS DEFICIT SPENDING AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE BOTTOM OF THE FIRST COLUMN THERE, ON OUR TREND WE DO NOT ANTICIPATE WE WILL DEFICIT SPEND. WE WILL HAVE SLIGHTLY OVER 18 MILLION. PART OF THIS IS DUE TO ALL CARRY OVER EXPENDITURES BEING BUDGETED. AGAIN THOSE CARRY OVER EXPENDITURES, THE REVENUE, IT IS NOT NEW, SO IT IS NOT PLACED IN THE REVENUE PORTION AND SOME OF THEM MAY RUN INTO THE NEXT ACADEMIC FISCAL YEAR MEANING NOT ALL OF THE EXPENDITURES WILL COME TO FRUITION IN THIS FISCAL YEAR. IT ALSO INCLUDES THE TRANSFER OUT AMOUNT OF 4 MILLION 779, 828 AND THAT IS THE AMOUNT THAT IS GOING TO COVER THE OVER RUN COST OF OUR STEAM BUILDING. AT THE BOTTOM, YOU WILL SEE THAT THE WORST CASE SCENARIO IN ALL OF THE EXPENDITURES WERE TO COME [01:45:01] TO FRUITION IN WHICH THE ENDING FUN -- ENDING FUND BALANCE WOULD DECREASE FROM 114 MILLION TO A LITTLE OVER 74 MILLION AND IF THE PREDICT TIFF FORECASTING IS ACCURATE WE ARE LOOKING AT AN INCREASE TO THE ENDING FUND BALANCE. HERE YOU CAN SEE THE ENDING FUND BALANCE COMPONENT AND THAT'S BASED ON THE BOARD APPROVED OPERATING BUDGET THAT INCLUDE RESTRICTIVE PROGRAMS, COMMITTED FUNDS AND ASSIGNED FUNDS. THE CHANGES ARE BASED ON THE AUDIT ADJUSTMENTS. THE BOOKS ARE CLOSED DURING JULY AND AUGUST. WE HAVE THE UNAUDITED ACTUALS IN SEPTEMBER. BUT THEN THE FINAL AUDIT IS BEFORE DECEMBER 15TH. THIS IS WHEN WE MAY HAVE SOME ADJUSTMENTS AND BASED ON THE ADJUSTMENTS IS WHERE YOU CAN SEE THE CHANGES FOR THE YEAR TO DATE. ADDITIONALLY OUR SECOND INTERIM ALSO REPORTS ON OTHER FUNDS. THESE FUNDS ARE RESTRICTED. IT PROVIDES -- THESE FUNDS ARE SPECIFIC PROGRAMS INCLUDING LIKE OUR CAFETERIA AND THE BUILDING FUND WHICH IS ONE OF THE ONES I WANT TO POINT OUT. THAT'S THE ONE THAT IS COVERING ALL OF OUR BOND PROJECTS INCLUDING THE STEAM BUILDING. AND AS YOU CAN SEE THAT FUND WILL BE PRETTY MUCH DEPLETED BY THE END OF THE YEAR. THE FUNDS LEFT WILL BE FOR ANY COSTS INVOLVING AUDIT REQUIREMENTS. AND ANY ADDITIONAL COST THAT'S WOULD BE RECORDING -- REGARDING THE BOND AS WE SAW IN THE PREVIOUS AND WOULD HAVE TO BE COVERED BY THE GENERAL FUND. IT IS THE MONEY IN THE RESERVES FOR THE GENERAL FUND. ANY OVER RUN COST FOR ANY OF THE BOND EXPENDITURES WOULD HAVE TO COME FROM OUR RESERVES. >> HERE AS PART OF THE REPORTING WHICH INVOLVES CERTIFICATION, A DISTRICT NEEDS TO REPORT WHETHER IT IS GOING TO BE POSITIVE, QUALIFIED OR NEGATIVE. THIS IS THE MULTI-YEAR PROJECTION. A POSITIVE QUALIFICATION MEANS WE WILL HAVE A MINIMUM OF 3% RESERVE IN THE CURRENT AND TWO CONSECUTIVE YEARS. AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THIS YEAR THAT WOULD MEAN WE WOULD HAVE TO END THE YEAR AT 3%. IT IS THE SECOND TO LAST LINE AND AS A LITTLE OVER 7 MILLION AND A LITTLE OVER 6 MILLION. BASED ON THE MULTI-YEAR PROJECTIONS AT THIS TIME BE WILL BE ABLE TO MEET THE RESERVE REQUIREMENTS AND THEREFORE OUR REPORTING AND TONIGHT WE WILL SAY WE HAVE A POSITIVE CERTIFICATION. THE MULTI-YEAR PROJECTION DOES SHOW DEFICIT SPENDING BASED ON THE LOWER REVENUE. YOU CAN SEE THE LOWER REVENUE AND THAT'S DUE TO DECLINING ENROLLMENT. THE DISTRICT IS MONITORING THAT VERY CLOSELY. AS SHARED EARLIER THE PREDICT TIFF FORECAST SAYS IT MAY NOT HAPPEN. CURRENT BUDGET HAS ONE-TIME FUNDING AND THOSE EX -- EXPENDITURES WILL NO LONGER BE BUDGETED AND WE WILL START TO STABILIZE SOME OF THAT SPENDING. AT THIS TIME BE ALSO WANTED TO PROVIDE THE BOARD WITH AN UPDATE ON OUR ONE-TIME FUNDING WHICH IS COVID FUNDS. THIS IS THE ONLY FUNDING THAT IS TO DATE UNTIL FEBRUARY 28TH. SO EVERYTHING YOU SAW PRIOR TO THIS WAS UNTIL JANUARY 31ST BECAUSE THOSE ARE STANDARDIZED REPORTS. HERE YOU CAN SEE OUR COVID FUNDING WHICH ALL OF THEM HAVE DIFFERENT ENDING DATES. SOME OF THEM NEED TO BE EXPENDED BY SEPTEMBER OF 2023 AND THE REST BY SEPTEMBER OF 2024. SOME OF THESE AMOUNTS HAVE BEEN BUDGETED AS CARRY OVER. AND THAT'S WHAT IT IS AND IT MAY NOT BE SUSPENDED THIS YEAR BECAUSE SOME OF THE EXPENDITURES MAY MOVE INTO THE NEXT FISCAL YEAR. WE ARE CONTINUING TO USE THESE FUNDS TO SUPPORT ONE-TIME 6 PENNED TOURS THAT -- ONE-TIME EXPENDITURES THAT SUPPORTS THE SAFETY AND LOSS FOR OUR STUDENTS. AND AGAIN, THIS INFORMATION IS FEBRUARY 28TH, 2023. TO SUM IT UP, IT IS A VERY, VERY LENGTHY DOCUMENT THAT IS SUBMITTED TO THE STATE. BUT BASED ON THE CURRENT FISCAL YEAR INFORMATION WHEN THE BOARD TAKES ACTION TONIGHT IN REGARDS TO THE CERTIFICATION OF A POSITIVE CERTIFICATION, WE HAVE INCLUDED THE DEFICIT SPENDING FOR ESTEEM BUILDING AND THAT IS INCLUDED IN THE CONTRIBUTION AND THEN BASED ON THE CURRENT TRENDS WE DO NOT ANTICIPATE DEFICIT SPENDING. HOWEVER, THE BUDGETED EXPENDITURES ARE STATIC AT THIS TIME AND ONCE AGAIN THIS INFORMATION IS BASED ON OUR BEST KNOWN ASSUMPTIONS AND YEAR TO DATE INFORMATION AS OF JANUARY 31ST. [01:50:05] AGAIN TO SUMMARIZE WE HAVE A HEALTHY RESERVE WITH COMMITTED FUNDS. AND WHEN WE ADOPT OUR BUDGET IN JUNE WE MAY NEED TO REVISIT THOSE FUNDS AT THE TIME OF ADOPTION TO OFFSET SOME OF THAT DEFICIT SPENDING. AND FINALLY WE STARTED WITH THE PROS -- PROCESS OF THE BUDGETED CYCLE. THE NEXT STEPS ARE THE CYCLE STARTS ALL OVER AND WE ARE ALREADY STARTED. WE ARE WORKING ON OUR PROPOSED BUDGET FOR 23-24 AND TRAOEUBG -- TAKING THIS INFORMATION INTO ACCOUNT. WE WILL BE BRINGING IT TO THE BOARD IN JUNE. THE GOVERNOR WILL RELEASE A MAY REVISE IN WHICH ASSUMPTIONS LIKE COLA MAY CHANGE. RIGHT NOW WE USED THE COLA THAT IS SLATED FOR NEXT YEAR. HOWEVER, ALL OF THAT CAN CHANGE WITH A MAY REVISE. WE BRING THE PROPOSED BUDGET ALONG WITH THE LOCAL CONTROL ADVISORY PLAN AND THE CLOSING OF THE BOOKS AND THE AUDITING WILL BE DONE BY SEPTEMBER. FIRST INTERIM IN DECEMBER FOR THE 2324 FISCAL YEAR AND THE CYCLE STARTS AGAIN. THANK YOU. >> THANK YOU FOR THAT REPORT. QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? >> YES. SO WHEN WE LOOK AT THE EXPENDITURES AT THE GIVEN SALARIES AND BENEFITS, THAT'S PROJECTED WITH THE CURRENT SALARY INCREASES FOR BTA/CSCA, MANAGEMENT AND SO FORTH, RIGHT? >> THAT IS NOT. THAT HAS NOT YET BEEN BOARD APPROVED. THIS IS AS OF JANUARY 31ST. >> OKAY. >> BUT AGAIN, WITH THAT, WE HAVE MADE SOME PREDICT TIFF FORECASTING. YOU CAN SEE THAT WIGGLE ROOM IN REGARDS TO WHAT WE BELIEVE IS SOME OF THE SAVINGS SO WE CAN HELP TO BUFFER SOME OF THAT. >> SO THAT WOULD BE PROJECTED IN THE JUNE BUDGET. >> YES. YOU KWEUL -- YOU WILL HAVE THAT UPDATED BUDGET. >> THANK YOU. >> MAYBE I WILL MAKE A FEW COMMENTS BEFORE YOU ASK QUESTIONS. YOUR BUDGET IS YOUR STORY, RIGHT. THE STORY WE HAVE TO TRY TO TELL IS WHAT DO WE WANT OUT OF OUR STUDENTS. HOW DO WE GET THERE AND WHAT TOOLS DO WE NEED IN TERMS OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL IN ORDER TO KEEP AND RETAIN THE BEST STAFF. THAT'S ANOTHER STORY WE HAVE TO TELL. ONE OF THE STORIES -- WE -- WHAT WE TRIED TO ACCOMPLISH IS WE HAD A STAFFING THAT WAS GOING TO HELP MOVE FORWARD. I THINK WE WERE MAKING GOOD PROGRESS WITH THAT. THERE IS A LOT OF WORK LEFT TO DO IN THAT AREA. WHAT I THINK I COMMITTED TO WAS WE NEED TO SPEND THE NEXT TWO YEARS AND WE NEED TO STABILIZE THE BUDGET WHICH IS A RE IMAGINING THE STORY I AM TALKING ABOUT. WE NEED TO HAVE DEEP CONVERSATIONS AND MAKE DECISIONS MOVING FORWARD. I THINK WE WILL BE SUCCESSFUL IN DOING THAT. I THINK YOU HAVE SEEN THE STORIES OF WHAT IT MAY LOOK LIKE. WE WILL MAKE IT WHEN WE COME BACK WITH THE BUDGET. >> SO IN REGARDS LIKE WE JUST HAD OUR REVIEW OF OUR HISTORY ADOPTION FOR THE TEXTBOOKS, DO YOU KNOW THE ESTIMATED COST OF THAT COMING DOWN? I WAS LOOKING AT OUR BUDGET FOR BOOKS AND SUPPLIES. >> NOT INCLUDING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT. IT'S CURRENTLY AT 2.5 MILLION. >> SO IF YOU CAN SEE THAT DR. SUE THAT OBJECT CODE, YEAR TO DATE WE HAVE SPENT CLOSE TO 4 MILLION. AND SO WE HAVE INCLUDED IN THE PREDICT TIFF FORECASTING CLOSE TO 11. AND SO WE HAVE THE BUFFER ROOM TO MAKE SURE WE ARE ABLE TO HAVE ENOUGH FOR THAT EXPENDITURE. >> AND I'M LOOKING AT THE FEDERAL FUND PROJECTED VERSUS PROJECTED ACTUALS UNDER BOOKS AND SUPPLIES. IS THAT WHERE YOU ARE REFERRING TO? >> CORRECT. >> THANK YOU. >> HIDDEN IN THESE BUDGETS ARE A LOT OF ONE-TIME FUNDS. [01:55:02] PART OF THE STORY -- I'M A STORY TELLER SO EXCUSE ME ON THIS, BUT WE NEED TO RECOGNIZE WHAT ARE ONE-TIME THINGS. TEXTBOOKS WE HAVE TO CONSIDER AS ONE-TIME FUNDS. WE HAVE TO BE STRATEGIC ABOUT UTILIZING ONE-TIME RESOURCES TOWARD THAT AND NOT COMMITTING ONGOING FUNDS THROUGH ONE-TIME NEEDS. THOSE ARE ALL OF THE CONVERSATIONS WE HAVE TO HAVE MOVING FORWARD. I REALIZE THERE ARE A LOT OF CONVERSATIONS TAKING PLACE. THAT WILL CONTINUE TO MOVE BECAUSE WE NEED THE LCAP TO CONTINUE TO CATAPULT US TO IMPROVE. BUT ALONG THE WAY WE HAVE TO ALSO HAVE A MACRO CONVERSATION AROUND WHAT IS IT THAT WE WANT AND REALLY ENGAGE THE COMMUNITY ABOUT WHAT THAT IS. THAT'S THE PIECE I AM TALKING ABOUT HAVING. WE WILL HAVE A MACRO VIEW OF WHAT WE WANT IN FIVE, SIX, SEVEN YEARS FOR OUR STUDENTS AND OUR OPERATIONS AND THEN USE THE LCAT PROCESS TO GET US THERE. THERE ARE TWO THINGS HAPPENING, THE LCAT PROCESS DEALING WITH THE MICROTHINGS RIGHT NOW. WE HAVE A MACRO CONVERSATION. AND THEN WE ARE LINED UP IN THAT DIRECTION. IT HAS TO DO WITH US REIMAGINING THE BUDGET AND MAKING SENSE WITH WHAT WE WANT TO ACCOMPLISH. >> REAL QUICK, THE COVID-19 GRANTS, THAT 32 MILLION, IT LOOKS LIKE A LOT HASN'T BEEN TOUCHED AND THERE IS A TIMELINE. I'M GUESSING IT IS USE IT OR LOSE IT FUNDS, I'M GUESSING? >> IT IS. CORRECT. AND SO THAT'S -- IF YOU SEE WE HAVE THE TIMELINES THERE AND YOU CAN SEE THE ONE THAT IS DUE ON SEPTEMBER 30TH AND HAVING THE LEAST AMOUNT IN COMPARISON TO THE OTHERS. SOME OF THIS MONEY IS INCOME BETTERED, SO WE DO -- INCUMBERED SO WE HAVE PLANNED EXPENDITURES. SOME OF THEM WE HAVE TO AWAIT APPROVAL FROM THE STATE LIKE HVAC AND THE DIFFERENT THINGS WE ARE DOING. IT DOES TAKE A LITTLE TIME. WE DO HAVE THEM INCUMBERED. >> AND TO THE BEST OF MY UNDERSTANDING SOME OF THESE GRANTS ARE SPECIFIC ABOUT WHAT CAN BE PURCHASED WITH THEM. >> THAT IS CORRECT. AND THAT'S WHY ADDITIONAL EVEN GETTING APPROVAL OF SOME OF THOSE PURCHASES THAT YOU WANT TO MAKE DEPENDING ON THE COST OF THEM. >> YEAH. >> BUT WE ARE PRETTY CONFIDENT WE WILL BE ABLE TO USE IT? >> YES. >> JUST -- THE NUANCES OF THE LANGUAGE WE USE IN SOME OF THESE FUNDS, WE HAVE RESTRICTIVE FUNDS WE HAVE TO SPEND ON CERTAIN THINGS. IF WE HAVE A SCHOOL THAT SAYS I WANT NEW DESKS. NOT THAT IT IS HAPPENING HERE, BUT SO YOU CAN SEE IT. I WANT NEW DESKS. LET'S SAY WE HAVE CONCENTRATION FUNDS THAT ARE AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE THEM. YOU CAN'T REALLY PURCHASE DESKS WITH THE CONCENTRATION FUNDS. THE DESKS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE SUPPLEMENTAL TO TRY TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SUPPORT. YOU WANT TO CLOSE THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP AND SO ON. IF YOU SAY WE WANT FLEXIBLE TABLES AND THINGS THAT ARE ENHANCING LEARNING. IF YOU CAN DESCRIBE IT THAT WAY, YEAH, IT WILL FORCE YOU NOT TO HAVE DESKS THAT ARE REGULAR DESKS. IT WILL BE DESKS USED FOR INSTRUCTION. THAT'S HOW YOU WRITE THAT TO ACCESS THOSE FUNDS. THERE IS A LOT OF CONVERSATION WE HAVE TO HAVE WITH THOSE THINGS. IT WILL REQUIRE DEEP CONVERSATIONS ABOUT HOW WE CAN BE CREATE OF IT BY -- CREATIVE TO USE THE FUNDS FOR THINGS WE NEED. >> AND ON THAT NOTE YOU SAY YOU HAVE TO ASK FOR APPROVAL. >> CORRECT. >> WHEN YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT -- YOU SAID GETTING CREATIVE WITH HOW YOU ARE PHRASING YOUR QUESTION AND HOW YOU ARE REQUESTING THE MONEY TO BE SPENT. WHAT LEVEL DO WE HAVE -- LIKE HOW -- HOW FAR CAN WE GET WITH THAT STRATEGY? WE HAD AN ISSUE -- WHEN I TOOK THE POSITION, THERE IS A ROOM IN THE DISTRICT WAREHOUSE THAT IS STACKED UP WITH INDIVIDUAL DESKS AND THEY ARE NOT IN USE. I TAKE IT THEY WERE FROM GRANT MONEY SO USED AS THEY WERE INTENDED TO, BUT NOW THEY ARE JUST SITTING THERE AND NOT GOING TO USE. THESE ARE COVID-19 GRANTS SO I TAKE IT THEY HAVE TO DO WITH PJ PE. PPE. HOW MUCH EFFORT CAN WE AS A BOARD PUT INTO -- OR AS A DISTRICT PUT INTO NEGOTIATING ABOUT BEING MORE FLEXIBLE ABOUT WHAT WE ARE PURCHASING. NOW THAT WE ARE MOVING PAST THE DARK AGE OF THE PANDEMIC. [02:00:03] >> THERE ARE CERTAIN ONES YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO NEGOTIATE AROUND. IT DEPENDS ON WHAT IS WRITTEN. FOR EXAMPLE, I CAN'T USE BOND FUNDS FOR OPERATIONS. THERE IS NOTHING I CAN SAY ABOUT USING BOND FUNDS THAT IS OPERATIONAL. THERE IS NOTHING I CAN SAY. THAT'S PRETTY CLEAR. THERE ARE OTHER AREAS THAT ARE -- YOU CAN USE IT. RIGHT NOW MRS. CARTER IS WORKING ON THE TEXTBOOK FUNDS. WE HAVE FUNDS THAT CAME DOWN IT IS DESCRIBED IN ONE WAY. BUT WHEN YOU LOOK AT THE NUANCES YOU CAN USE THEM. THE WAY TO DESCRIBE IT IT IS ART. IT IT SAYS WE CAN USE IT FOR THESE OTHER AREAS AND BE STRATEGIC ABOUT IT. >> AND THAT'S SOMETHING YOU WILL SEE COMING FORWARD. IT IS AN ART, MUSIC AND INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL GRANT. PART OF THAT IS TO PURCHASE INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS. THAT'S WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR -- LOOKING AT THE GRANT FOR AND WE WILL SHARE IT. THERE ARE ALLOWABLE EXPENSES. EACH ONE OF THESE GRANTS COME WITH A LIST OF ALLOWABLE EXPENSES. SOME WE HAVE TO SEND OUT TO THE STATE AND WE WRITE THE DESCRIPTIONS. AS FAR AS FLEXIBILITY IT LIVES WITHIN THE ALLOWABLE EXPENSES AND WHETHER THE PURCHASE WE ARE MAKING WILL MEET THE LANGUAGE THAT IS WRITTEN THERE. >> AND THEY HAVE SHIFTED FROM PPE TO MORE SAFETY ORIENTED? ORIENTEDDED SO IT HAS OPENED UP THE PA SYSTEM IS SOMETHING WE LOOKED AND CONNECTED WITH SAFETY. >> THANK YOU. >> AND I'M SORRY I WILL SPEAK A LOT HERE. THE BOTTOM LINE OF THIS WHOLE THING IS IN ORDER FOR US NOT TO BE WASTEFUL, WE HAVE TO BE IN COLLABORATION AND COMMUNICATION WITH THE STAFF AT THE SITES TO ESTABLISH NEEDS AND TO MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE NOT JUST BUYING STUFF TO BUY STUFF. IT HAS TO BE HEADED TOWARD SOMETHING THAT WE ARE ALL GOING TO COMMIT TO USE. THAT'S WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE THE PLC'S IN A ROOM COLLABORATING AND TALKING. WHEN THEY SAY WE NEED THIS, WHEN WE GET THIS IT IS NOT SOMETHING SOMEBODY IS USING. THE CHALLENGE IS TO GET THE STAFF TOGETHER IN A ROOM TO TALK ABOUT WHAT ARE OUR NEEDS AND ESTABLISHING THE CONSENSUS AND COMMITTING TO EDUCATING. IF YOU DO THAT, YOU WILL NOTICE -- WE WON'T BE WASTING AS MUCH. YOU WON'T SEE THINGS LAYING OUT. WHEN WE BUY A SCIENCE TECH BOOK -- TEXTBOOK IT WON'T BE SITTING THERE. WE ARE ICING -- WE ARE USING IT. LET'S LOOK AT THE DOCTRINE TODAY. WE HAD TEACHER THAT'S LOVED WHAT WE ARE DOING. I KNOW THEY ARE GOING TO USE IT, BUT WHAT ABOUT EVERYBODY ELSE? WE HAVE TO ENGAGE IN THE CONVERSATIONS BECAUSE THE WORST THING WE DAN -- WE CAN DO IS NO ONE IS USING THE BOOKS AND THEN YOU ARE SPINNING YOUR WHEELS AGAIN. >> JUST ONE MORE THING, YOU MENTIONED THE BOND MONIES HAD BEEN DEPLETED. AT THIS POINT WHAT ROLE DOES THE BOND OVERSIGHT PLAY AND WHO IS OVERSEEING THE FUNDS AS OF RIGHT NOW FOR ANY ADDITIONAL COSTS THAT COME. THEY MAY BE TRANSFERRED OVER AND HOW ARE WE DOING THAT? >> THE BOND COMMITTEE WILL EXIST UNTIL THE FINAL AUDITS ARE DONE AND WE WILL HAVE TWO MORE. WE ARE FINISH -- FINISHING ONE FOR THE PREVIOUS YEAR WHICH IS 21 AND 22 AND THAT IS DUE ON MARCH 31ST AND THEN THERE IS ONE FOR THIS YEAR BECAUSE WE HAD EXPENDITURES THIS YEAR. THEY WILL HAVE TWO FORMAL MEETINGS AND THEY WILL HAVE TO PRESENT AFTERNOON -- AN ANNUAL REPORT FOR LAST FISCAL YEAR AND THEN THIS ONE. SINCE THE MONEY IS NOW GENERAL FUNDS, THE DISTRICT ITSELF OVERSEES THE FUNDS. >> THANK YOU. >> ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? >> THANK YOU FOR THOSE PRESENTATIONS. LET'S GO ON TO THE APPROVAL -- I'M SORRY. THE PUBLIC HEARINGS. WE DO NOT HAVE A PUBLIC HEARING [10. ACTION] THIS EVENING. MOVING ON TO APPROVAL OF MINUTES. THE NEXT ITEM OF BUSINESS IS APPROVAL OF MINUTES. DO I HAVE A MOTION TO APPROVE AGENDA 10.1.1, APPROVAL OF MINUTES, FEBRUARY 22ND, 2023. [02:05:04] >> SO MOVED. >> SECOND. >> ROLL CALL, PLEASE. >> MR. MENDOZA. >> I. >> ARMSTRONG. >> I. >> DR. EL -- DR. ELHESSEN. >> I. >> STEWART. >> I. >> GARZA. >> I. THANK YOU. UH -- I MAKE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE AGENDA WITHDRAWING 10.3.1.1 AND WAS THERE ONE PHO*R -- MORE? >> I THINK MAKE A MOTION TO PULL 10.3.5.5. >> AND 10.3.5.5. DO I HAVE A MOTION? >> SO MOVED. >> SECOND. >> WAIT. ONE MOMENT. CAN WE PULL 10.3.5.4? IS IT TOO LATE FOR THAT. >> 10 -- 10.3 -- IT IS JUST BEFORE 5-POINT 4. >> ONE SECOND. 10.3.5.5 AND BOARD MEMBER MENDOZA, 10.3.5.4. >> CORRECT. >> THANK YOU. SO LET ME RE-- RESTATE THAT MOTION. I MAKE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA AND WITHHOLD ITEM 10.3.1.1, 10.3.5.5, 10.3.5.4. DO I HAVE A SECOND TO APPROVE THE CONSENT? >> SECOND. >> QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? ROLL CALL. >> MR. MENDOZA. >> I. >> MS. ARMSTRONG. >> I. >> DR. ELHESSEN. >> I. >> MS. STEWART. >> I. >> MR. CRIHFIELD. >> I. >> MRS. GARZA. >> I. >> ITEMS WITHHELD ARE FROM THE CONSENT AGENDA. 10.3.1.1. BOARD OF CALENDAR MEETINGS. DO I HAVE A MOTION? >> I MAKE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE CALENDAR. >> SECOND. >> ROLL CALL, PLEASE. >> MR. MENDOZA,. >> I. >> MS. ARMSTRONG. -- ANYTHING TO DISCUSS? >> SORRY. >> I THOUGHT YOU WERE GOOD WITH IT. THE REASON I WANTED TO -- I PULLED THAT MYSELF AND NOT YOU BECAUSE WE HAVE BEEN DELIBERATE ABOUT THE AGENDA. WHEN I TOOK OVER IN JANUARY I REALLY WANTED THE TWO MEETINGS TO GET BUSINESS DONE, BUT IN THERE -- SO WE HASTILY PUT THE CALENDAR TOGETHER, BUT I KNEW THERE WERE PEOPLE WHAT ABOUT THIS AND WHAT ABOUT THAT. WE SPENT THE LAST MONTH FINALIZING THE AGENDA. THE AGENDA YOU HAVE AT HAND IS AFTER I TALKED TO EVERY BOARD MEMBER AND I THINK -- AND THIS IS WHAT I WILL SAY ABOUT YOU GUYS. YOU WORK HARD AND YOU ARE AT A LOT OF EVENTS. IT IS OKAY TO MISS A MEETING HERE AND THERE SO LONG AS WE HAVE A QUORUM. DON'T FEEL GUILTY ABOUT THAT. BOARDS DO IT ALL THE TIME. WE DID THROW THESE MEETINGS LATE, AFTER A LOT OF STUFF WAS BEING SCHEDULED ALREADY. IF YOU HAVE TO MISS A BOARD MEETING BECAUSE OF PREVIOUS COMMITMENTS, I WOULDN'T FEEL GUILTY ABOUT THAT. JUST BASED ON WHAT WE ARE SEEING WE WILL HAVE QUORUM -- QUORUMS. WITHOUT SAY WHOG WILL MISS WHEN, I THINK AFTER I TALKED TO EVERYBODY, THE CALENDAR IS THE ONE I AM RECOMMENDING. >> QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? >> NONE? HEARING NONE CAN WE PLEASE TAKE ROLL CALL. >> MR. MENDOZA. >> I. >> MS. ARMSTRONG. >> I. >> DR. ELHESSEN. >> I. >> MS. STEWART. >> I. >> MR. CRIHFIELD. >> I. >> MRS. GARZA. >> I. >> AND SO NOW WE MOVE ON TO THE NEXT ITEM WHICH IS 10.3.5.5. I'M SORRY. LET'S GO IN SEQUENTIAL ORDER. 10.3.5.4. DO I HAVE A MOTION? >> SO MOVED. >> SECOND. >> QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? >> I HAVE A QUESTION. TWO QUESTIONS MOSTLY, BUT I WILL START WITH THE FIRST. THE FIRST QUESTION MAY SOUND A LITTLE SILLY. BUT WE HAVE OUR CONTRACT WITH PIZZA HUT AND WE ARE INCREASING OUR CONTRACT FROM 90,000 TO 140,000. MY UNDERSTANDING PIZZA HUT SERVES US EVERY OTHER WEDNESDAY. [02:10:05] SO IS THIS INCREASE IN PRICE FROM THE COMPANY OR ARE WE INCREASING THE THE FREQUENCY OF THE PERSONAL PIZZA? WHY THE PRICE INCREASE? >> IT IT HAS BEEN A HIT SO WE ARE LOOKING TO INCLUDE IT MORE IN THE MENU. >> I WILL SAY THE UNPOPULAR OPINION, BUT AS MUCH AS STUDENTS LIKE THAT PIZZA HUT, THERE IS SOMETIMES SOME DOWNSIDES TO IT IS IT USUALLY CAUSES HUGE SPIKES IN THE LUNCH LINES AND IT MAKES IT IMPOSSIBLE FOR ANYONE TO REALLY GET IN. LIKE I PERMANENTLY -- I PERSONALLY RELY ON SCHOOL LUNCH. ON WEDNESDAYS THERE IS A HUGE SWARM OF PEOPLE TRYING TO FUNNEL INTO THE CAFETERIA AND YOU HAVE OUR SECURITY GUARD TONY OR VIRGINIA TRYING TO BLOCK PEOPLE FROM GETTING IN. IT BECOMES A NIGHTMARE SITUATION. THE PIZZA ITSELF, EVERYONE GETS ONE SLICE. STUDENTS -- I AGREE THAT STUDENTS LIKE THE PIZZA, BUT I FEEL LIKE $140,000 COULD -- I HATE TO SUGGEST TAKING PIZZA HUT AWAY FROM US, BUT I THINK FOR ONE INSTEAD OF HAVING ONE DAY IN WHICH EVERYONE SWRAORPL -- SWARMS THE CAFETERIA AND ALMOST -- A LOT OF PEOPLE DON'T GET FOOD IS WE CAN A LOT THAT MONEY TOWARD INCREASING THE OVERALL QUALITY OF JUST EVERYDAY FOOD SO IT IS MORE DISTRIBUTED. >> [APPLAUSE]. >> YOU ARE SPEAKING MY LANGUAGE. I AM THINKING HUM -- HUMMUS AND CAL -- KALE. >> AND IF THERE ARE NO OTHER OPTIONS IN TERMS OF FOOD ITSELF THERE ARE OTHER THINGS TO LOOK AT WHEN IT COMES TO NUTRITIOUS SERVICES LIKE UTENSILS AND TRAYS. THE UTENSILS ARE WASTEFUL BECAUSE IT IS A PLASTIC WRAP WITH A STRAW AND NAP PICK LIKE A SPORK EVERYBODY RIPS IT OPEN AND TOSSES EVERYTHING AND THERE IS A LOT OF LITTER AND PLASTIC TRAYS. WE TRIED PAPER OUT FOR A LITTLE BIT, BUT THEY DISAPPEAR. THERE IS AN ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERN TOO. WHAT I AM LOOKING AT RIGHT NOW PIZZA HUT IS CAUSING ISSUES ON CAMPUS AS IT IS. MAYBE INSTEAD OF INCREASING THE AMOUNTS OF PIZZA HUT WE GIVE TO STUDENTS WE CAN INCREASE THE GENERAL QUALITY OF THE NUTRITION SERVICES. IS THAT SOMETHING THAT IS POSSIBLE TO DO OR ARE WE TOO FAR INTO NEGOTIATIONS WITH PIZZA HUT? >> IT IS SOMETHING WE WILL SHARE WITH OUR DIRECTOR OF NUTRITION SERVICES. I WILL SHARE THAT INFORMATION WITH HER. >> AND DR. DROTI, MAYBE YOU CAN BRING IT UP AT THE ADVISORY COUNCIL. >> THERE IS AN ITEM COMING UP IN THE SPRING ABOUT NUTRITION SERVICES. WE WILL HAVE A CHANCE TO TALK ABOUT THAT, ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITIES WE HAVE. I LOVE THE FOOD OUR NUTRITIOUS SERVICES IS SERVING. IT IS BETTER THAN ANY OTHER PLACE I HAVE SEEN. IT IS UNFORTUNATE OUR STUDENTS -- I HAVE TO FIND OUT WHY OUR STUDENTS AREN'T GETTING ACCESS TO IT. THAT'S PART OF THE PRESENTATION WRAOE -- WE WILL HAVE TO LOOK AT. IF IT IS AN ISSUE OF CAPACITY OR BEING ABLE TO SERVE THAT MANY STUDENTS, I GET IT. THERE ARE PIECES WE CAN INCORPORATE. WE PLAN TO HAVE A DECISION ON THAT IN THE SPRING. THE STORYTELLING OF HOW DO WE IMPROVE MOVING FORWARD IS PART OF THE CONVERSATION. >> AND WOULD THAT INCLUDE AN INCREASE IN FUNDING FOR NUTRITIOUS SERVICES ORIE ARRANGING HOW WE SPEND THE -- OR REARRANGING HOW WE SPEND THE MONEY. >> WE DECIDE WHERE WE PUT OUR MONEY. WE DECIDE WHERE WE PUT OUR MONEY. IF WE DECIDE TO SAY THIS IS WHAT WE WANT. WE DON'T HAVE UNLIMITED FUNDS. WE CAN SAY WE WON'T DO THIS AND WE NEED THAT. >> REAL QUICK I WANT TO ECHO WHAT CHRISTOPHER IS SAYING. HE HAS SEEN IT FIRSTHAND, BUT I HEARD IT FROM COMMUNITY MEMBERS ABOUT THE LONG LINES AND STUDENTS NOT GETTING FOOD. IT IS PROBABLY ON THOSE DAYS. I THINK OTHER DISTRICTS HAVE LOOKED AT HOW TO PARTNER WITH THE COMMUNITY AND DIFFERENT BUSINESSES TO HAVE VENDORS AND POP UPS AND EVEN FRESH FRUIT STANDS. I DON'T KNOW IF THEY HAVE KALE AND HUMMUS STANDS, BUT WE CAN LOOK INTO IT. I THINK THERE ARE A LOT OF OPTIONS AND CREATIVE WAYS TO SOLVE THOSE PROBLEMS. THANK YOU FOR PULLING THAT ITEM AND BRINGING IT UP. >> WHAT TIMELINE DID YOU HAVE? I THINK YOU MIGHT HAVE SAID IT, BUT I MISSED IT. >> [INAUDIBLE] THE DIRECTOR AND I SPOKE ALREADY. SHE IS HEADED TO DC TO POSSIBLY LOOK AT GRANTS AND THINGS COMING DOWN FROM THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT TO HELP ENHANCE THE KITCHENS. SHE KNOWS MY INTERESTS BECAUSE I [02:15:02] PRAISED THEM ABOUT THEIR CATERING SERVICES. MY QUESTION IS HOW DO WE GET THIS TO THE SCHOOLS. I ANTICIPATE IT WILL BE A CAPACITY ISSUE SO WE WILL HAVE TO LOOK AT THAT TO SEE HOW TO ENHANCE THAT. >> I ADVISE THAT THIS PROCESS TAKE PRIORITY. WE HAVE ISSUES WHERE SOMETIMES THE FOOD THAT IS SERVED IS BORDER LINE UNSAFE. I KNOW I SHARED A PICTURE WITH STAFF ONE TIME ABOUT A STUDENT AT BELLFLOWER HIGH SCHOOL HAD MOLD ON HIS BREAD. I DON'T BLAME THE CAFETERIA STAFF. THEY ARE OVERWORKED AND DOING A LOT. I THINK JUST YESTERDAY THERE WAS SOME TALK ABOUT THE PIZZA ALSO HAD SOMETHING GOING ON WITH IT. IT HAPPENS. THE CHICKEN CAN BE PINK. OUR STAFF IS BUT -- PUTTING IN THE BEST EFFORT. A LOT OF TIMES YOU HAVE THE SWARM AND THEY ARE PUTTING ITEMS OUT ONE AT A TIME BECAUSE STUDENTS WILL GRAB A BUNCH AND RUN OUT THE DOOR. IT SLOWS DOWN THE HRUFRP LINES. THE LUNCH LINES. RIGHT NOW WE ARE IN A DIRE PLACE. IT IS NO FAULT OF STAFF, BUT I THINK -- I FEEL BAD FOR JUST NOW SAYING IT IS AN EMERGENCY, BUT I THINK IT IS AN URGENT CONCERN FOR THE STUDENT BODY. I ADVISE US TO EXPEDITE THAT PROCESS. >> I HAVE A RECOMMENDATION IN REGARDS TO THE PIZZA HUT SITUATION. IS THERE A WAY THAT LOGISTICALLY IT CAN BE SPREAD ACROSS TWO DIFFERENT ENTRANCES WHERE THEY CAN ACTUALLY SUPPORT STUDENTS? I HAVE A STRONG FEELING THAT REMOVING PIZZA HUT IS GOING TO BE AN UPROAR WITH MANY STUDENTS BECAUSE THEY REALLY LOVE PIZZA. I KNOW FROM MY OWN NIECES AND NEPHEWS. I HEAR YOUR ISSUE AND I THINK THAT'S NOT RIGHT EITHER. BUT THERE ARE WAYS TO SPREAD IT OUT OR HAVE TWO ENTRANCES WHERE THE PIZZA IS AT AND OTHER ENTRANCES WHERE THEY CAN HAVE OTHER OPTIONS IF THEY DON'T WANT THE PIZZA SUCH AS YOURSELF. IS THERE A WAY THAT MR. SEAN DIAZ CAN LOOK AT THAT. >> THE PROBLEM GOT WORSE AFTER THE PANDEMIC BECAUSE THERE USED TO BE A SIDE SNACK SHACK THAT WAS BUILT INTO THE MPB. THERE THERE WAS AN EXTRA BUILDING WHERE STUDENTS WOULD WANT THE MORE UNPOPULAR ITEM S WHO GO TO AND IT WOULD HELP TO TAKE AWAY FROM THE HUGE CROWD. SINCE THEN THAT SHACK WAS CLOSED AND NOW TRANSFORMED INTO A WELLNESS CENTER WHICH IS GREAT WE HAVE A WELLNESS CENTER, BUT UNFORTUNATE PLACEMENT. WITH THE OPENING OF THE ESTEEM BUILDING YOU CAN MOVE THE BUILDING. SINCE WE HAVE THAT IN PLACE, THE INFRASTRUCTURE FOR REDUCE -- REDUCING THE LUNCH LINES I THINK PIZZA HUT POSES A LARGER ISSUE OF GIVING STUDENTS WHAT THEY -- I FEEL BAD SAYING THAT. IS THIS WHAT WE ARE SPENDING OUR MONEY ON? PIZZA HUT? ARE WE REALLY DOING THIS? IT IS GREAT. SOME STUDENTS LOVE IT. SOME STUDENTS WHO THINK ABOUT, WAIT, THIS MONEY HAS TO BE COMING FROM SOMEWHERE. INSTEAD OF THE ONE GOOD DAY WHERE EVERYONE GROSS -- EVERYONE GOES AND GETS FOOD WE SHOULD INCREASE THE OVERALL QUALITY OF THE FOOD. >> I KNOW FROM VISITING THE CAFETERIA THAT OTHER SCHOOL DISTRICTS THAT WE KWA*ES -- WE WASTE SO MUCH FOOD. IT IS SO SAD. I OFTEN THINK OF SO MANY PEOPLE THAT THE KIDS THROW AWAY THE APPLE OR THE MILK THAT THERE ARE SO MANY HOMELESS. I KNOW IN BELLFLOWER WE HAVE A HOMELESS SHELTER THAT I DON'T KNOW IF WE CAN COLLABORATE AND PARTNER AS PART OF THE COMMUNITY PROCESS WHERE WE ARE NOT THROWING AWAY SO MUCH FOOD. IT IS MONEY WE ALLOCATED FOR OUR STUDENTS AND THEY DON'T LIKE IT. IF WE ARE GOING TO WORK WERE -- WITH THE NUTRITION CENTER IT IS IMPORTANT TO LOOK AT THE STUDENTS' NUTRITIONAL NEEDS AND WHAT THEY LIKE. A DIFFERENT SITE OR THE NUTRITION CENTER SAYING WE WILL HAVE THIS AND THEY DON'T WANT THAT. ALL OF THE FOOD IS BEING THROWN AWAY. >> WE ARE WORKING ON THAT PROGRAM RIGHT NOW WE ARE PILOTING THAT RAMONA ELEMENTARY. THEY ARE LOOKING AT PARTNERING WITH SOME OF OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS TO BE ABLE TO DONATE THAT FOOD. >> THAT'S GREAT. THANK YOU. >> BOARD MEMBER STEWART. >> NO. I WAS JUST GONNA SAY THAT OBVIOUSLY THIS IS A HOT TOPIC AND I AM EXCITED FOR THE STUDY SESSION COMING UP IN THE FUTURE ABOUT ALL OF OUR LUNCHES. THERE IS LOTS OF DIFFERENT OTHER THINGS THAT WE HAVEN'T TALKED ABOUT, BUT I'M GLAD YOU ARE DOING A STUDY SESSION AND SHOWING YOU ARE LISTENING AND CARING ABOUT WHAT THE KIDS AND FAMILIES WANT. ANY OTHER COMMENTS AND [02:20:03] QUESTIONS? >> AND I KNOW WE HAVE COME TO ACCEPT THAT EVERY FEW MONTHS WE WILL SEE A CHANGE OVER FOR THE STEAM BUILDING, BUT SO I UNDERSTAND THAT THINGS COME UP AND WE HAVE TO SPEND MORE MONEY, BUT WHAT I WANT TO ASK IS IF THIS AFFECTS OUR TIMELINE. LAST TIME I SPOKE WITH MR. BUFFINGTON AND YOU SAID FOR SURE WE WOULDN'T HAVE CLASSES IN HERE BY THE END OF THE ACADEMIC YEAR. DOES THIS AFFECT HOW SUMMER SCHOOL WOULD OPERATE IN THIS BUILD STPH-G -- BUILDING? ARE THERE CHANGES WITH THE TIMELINE? >> WE WILL NOT BE SEPARATING SUMMER SCHOOL IN THE BUILDING. WE WILL BE MOVING INTO THE BUILDING IN THE SUMMER. IT WAS NEVER THE INTENTION TO HAVE SUMMER SCHOOL IN THE BUILDING, BUT WE WILL USE THAT TIME TO MOVE IN. WE ARE LOOKING AT A LATE SPRING SOFT OPENING FOR THE BUILDING. WRAOE ARE DOING OUR PUNCH -- 2003 -- WE ARE DOING OUR PUNCH WALKS AND MAKING THE CHANGES THAT NEED TO BE MADE. WE ARE LOOKING AT A SOFT OPENING. >> ANOTHER REASON I ASK ABOUT THE TIMELINE IS BECAUSE LAST YEAR WE HAD A ROUGH TIME WITH AP TESTING. WE WERE SHORT ON SPACE ON CAMPUS AND SOME DAYS WE WOULD HAVE THE LIBRARY THAT WAS GREAT AND OTHER DAYS WE WOULD WORK IN THE GYM. WITH THOSE TABLES IN THE GYM THEY HAVE THAT KIND OF LIKE ROUGH SURFACE AND SO WE WERE DOING OUR MULTIPLE CHOICE AND FILL IN THE BUBBLES AND OUR PAPERS LOOKED MESSY AND PEOPLE WERE PUNCHING HOLES IN THEIR PAPERS. IT WASN'T AN IDEAL SETTING FOR AP TESTS. SO THE THOUGHT WAS WE COULD HAVE THEM IN THE STEAM BUILDING. AP TESTS START IN MAY. WOULD WE HAVE TOSS AP TESTS IN MAY OR DO YOU THINK THE BUILDING WOULD NOT BE READY BY THEN? >> WE HAVE BEEN TALKING WITH MRT ALTERNATIVES FOR THE TESTING. >> SO ALTERNATIVES -- >> ANOTHER PLACEMENT. WE WILL NOT BE UTILIZING THE STEAM BUILDING AT THIS TIME BASED ON OUR PROJECTION THAT EVERYTHING FROM OUR PUNCH WALK WILL NOT BE READY BY THOSE DATES WE WANT TO MAKE SURE SOMETHING IS IN PLACE. >> THANKS FOR LETTING ME KNOW. I WILL TAKE THAT BACK TO EVERYONE. >> THANK YOU FOR BRINGING THAT UP. WITH THE BUILDING FUNDS THAT WAS ALLOCATED BY THE BOARD, WITH THIS NEW CHANGE ORDER IS THAT STILL EXPECTED TO COVER ALL OF THE COSTS FOR THAT BUILD CASH DASH BUILDING, OR WERE YOU EXPECTING TO BE ALLOCATING MORE MONEY FROM THE GENERAL FUND. >> AS OF RIGHT NOW THE ALLOCATED TRANSFER WILL COVER EVERYTHING, BUT THERE IS A BUDGETARY VISION THAT NEEDS TO BE MADE AND WE WILL BE BRINGING IT TO THE BOARD. RIGHT NOW WE DO BELIEVE THE TRANSFER WILL COVER ALL OF THOSE COSTS. >> THANK YOU. >> IF THERE IS A FURTHER CHANGE ORDER FOR THAT, COULD WE PLEASE HAVE THE REPRESENTATIVE COME AND ANSWER QUESTIONS AT THAT POINT, PLEASE. >> OUR REPRESENTATIVE WOULD BE MR. BUFFING TON BECAUSE HE IS THE ONE THAT VETS ALL OF THE CHANGE ORDERS TO MAKE SURE. WE WILL DEFINITELY MAKE SURE HE CAN ANSWER THOSE QUESTIONS. >> ANYONE FROM THE ARCHITECT TOUR HOUSE CAN COME IN -- FROM 2H THAT CAN JOIN THAT NIGHT? >> 2003 -- WE CAN ASK. 2H IS THE CONSTRUCTION AND ARCHITECTS ARE WESTBURG AND WHITE. >> THAT WOULD BE GREAT. THANK YOU. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS ON THIS ITEM? WE HAVE ROLL CALL PLEASE? >> MR. MENDOZA. >> . >> I MRS. ARMSTRONG. >> I. >> DR. ELHESSEN. >> I. >> MS. STEWART. >> I. >> MR. CRIHFIELD. >> I. >> MS. GARZA. >> I. >> THE NEXT ITEM PULLED IS 10.3.5.5. DO I HAVE A MOTION? >> SO MOVED. >> SECOND? QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? >> SO THE REASON I WANTED THIS PULLED WAS -- SO I SEE TWO PO'S FOR OUR LAW FIRM, ERIC BATHEN. PO NUMBER P230069 AND P23 -- SO I NOTICE ONE BILLING IS FOR 138 HOURS AND THAT'S $50,000. AND THE OTHER IS 147 HOURS FOR $54,000. JUST DOING THE MATH IT LOOKS LIKE WE ARE PAYING $365 AN HOUR? IS THAT CORRECT? >> I WOULD HAVE TO LOOK AT THAT, THE ACTUAL IN -- INVOICE TO GIVE YOU THE FINAL BREAK DOWN. >> BUT DOES THAT SOUND ACCURATE, THE INVOICE OF 138 AND 147? >> BECAUSE I DON'T HAVE THE INVOICE IN FRONT OF ME, WE WOULD HAVE TO LOOK AT THE INVOICE TO MAKE SURE. >> OKAY. THANK YOU. >> ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? [02:25:03] ROLL CALL PLEASE -- >> I'M SORRY. I DO HAVE ONE MORE. I APOLOGIZE. THERE WAS ALSO STKPWARB -- MAYBE JUST SOME CLARIFICATION ON PURCHASE ORDER P2301185. IT SAYS FOR U LINE A STEPLADDER, $2,326. JUST CURIOUS IF I CAN GET CLARITY ON THAT. IS THAT THE GOING RATE? >> THAT'S FOR MR. BUFFING TON'S DEPARTMENT AND HE WILL STEP UP. THANK YOU, MR. BUFFING TON. >> LITERALLY WILL STEP UP. THAT LADDER FROM U LINE IS A SPECIAL WAREHOUSE LADDER. IT IS A 16-STEP LADDER SO THEY CAN GET ON THE TOP HEIGHT OF THE LOADING DOCK -- EXCUSE ME, THE WAREHOUSE SHELFING AT THE FOOD SERVICE WAREHOUSE. THE PREVIOUS ONE HAD BEEN DAMAGED AND WE DEEMED IT UNSAFE. >> OKAY. >> IT IS ONE OF THE FANCY LADDERS. >> IT IS ALL STEEL. IT IS A ROLL AROUND PRE-BUILT LADDER. YOU ROLL ON IT AND STEP ON A PEDAL AND IT LOCKS IN. >> AWESOME. I UH -- I APPRECIATE IT. >> IT HELPS US TO MAKE SURE THAT WE RECYCLE OUR MOLDY BREAD. >> I'M SORRY TO BRING IT BACK, BUT WHERE ARE WE HOUSING? >> AT THE WAREHOUSE. IT ACTUALLY -- THERE ARE TWO OF THEM AT THE WAREHOUSE. THEY HAVE TWO HEIGHTS DEPENDING ON WHAT LEVEL IS ON THE SHELFING. >> SO IT IS NOT GOING TO BE ANYWHERE NEAR ANY STUDENTS. >> NO. IT IS A NUTRITION WAREHOUSE. >> PERFECT. THANK YOU SO MUCH. >> ACTUALLY I DO I DO HAVE ONE MORE. PO NUMBER P2302239 AND THIS GOES BACK TO WHERE I WAS ASKING ABOUT THE COVID GRANT FUNDS. IT SAYS CONTROL ERROR COVID HVAC. IS THAT SOMETHING THAT WOULD COME OUT OF COVID FUNDS OR DOES THAT -- DOES THE PURCHASE ORDER LIST DOES THAT DELINEATE WHERE THE FUNDS COME FROM? >> NOT THIS LIST, BUT WE COULD -- WHAT WE WOULD DO BASED ON THE PURCHASE ORDER NUMBER IS LOOK AT THE PO AND IT WOULD HAVE THE BUDGET NUMBER THERE. MOST LIKELY YES BECAUSE OF THE SKREUPLGS THAT IS ON -- THE DESCRIPTION ON THERE. WE CAN REFERENCE THAT BACK WITH THE PO NUMBER. >> GREAT. THANK YOU. >> ANYONE ELSE HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? >> I HAD ONE QUESTION. ON PAGE 1 FOR $450,000 TOTAL SCHOOL SOLUTIONS. CAN YOU EXPLAIN TO ME WHAT THEY CONSULT US ON. >> WE USE THIS VENDOR TO SUPPORT US WITH CONTRACTED SERVICES FOR OUR ADMINISTRATIVE POSITIONS FOR EXAMPLE, IN OUR SPECIAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT WE ARE IN NEED OF ADDITIONAL PROGRAM ADMINISTRATORS BECAUSE WE ARE SHORT IN THE AREA. THEY PROVIDE US WITH RETIRED -- FORMER PROGRAM ADMINISTRATORS WHO CAN FILL THIS -- FILL IN THOSE GAPS. >> I'M GONNA MAKE A RESPECTFUL REQUEST FROM STAFF. COULD WE PLEASE HAVE A DESCRIPTION FOR ALL OF THE VENDORS MAYBE PERHAPS EVEN A VENDOR LIST OF WHAT THEY ARE DOING CURRENTLY WITH OUR DISTRICT, PLEASE. THAT WAY OUR NEW BOARD MEMBERS ARE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IT IS THEY DO FOR US. I KNOW WHEN I CAME ON I HAD A LOT OF THOSE QUESTIONS AS WELL. I THINK IT WOULD BE, GOING FORWARD, BENEFICIAL FOR A NEW BOARD MEMBER AND SPEAKING -- IF YOU'RE OKAY WITH THAT FOR OUR CURRENT NEW BOARD MEMBERS TO BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND ALL THAT AS WELL. >> WOULD THAT BE LIKE UNDER EVERY -- RIGHT NOW IT SAYS DESCRIPTION, BUT IT IS JUST THE NAME OF THE SERVICE. WE WOULD BE LOOKING AT A SEPARATE KEY THOUGH, RIGHT? OTHERWISE IT WOULD BE REALLY LONG. SO A SEPARATE KEY. A LOT OF THESE ARE REPEATS. WE SEE THEM EVERY MONTH. I KNOW THAT WOULD BE SOMETHING -- THAT'S A LOT OF WORK FOR STAFF, BUT I THINK IN THE LONG RUN IT WOULD BE BENEFICIAL. >> ARE YOU REFERRING TO BUSINESS CONTRACTS ON OUR CONTRACT SHEET? THEY WERE ON OUR CONTRACT SHEET. IT WOULD BE A DESCRIPTION ON OUR CONTRACT SHEET, ON OUR BUSINESS CONTRACT SHEET AND A DESCRIPTION OF WHAT THEY OFFER. >> LIKE AT THE END OF THE BOARD BOOK SOME. >> OUR CONTRACT THAT'S BE DO BUSINESS WITH. >> THERE IS AN ANSWER TO THAT. I THINK YOU MIGHT HAVE THAT ALREADY. >> SO OUR CONTRACT MAY -- MATRIX HAS A DESCRIPTION AND MS. GARZA IS CORRECT. IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THAT, WE WILL PROVIDE THAT FOR YOU IN THE FRIDAY MEMO. WE WILL ATTACH THE CURRENT CONTRACT MATRIX AND IT HAS A [02:30:04] DESCRIPTION. >> THANK YOU. SO APPRECIATE THAT. >> ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS. >> WELL, I DON'T LIKE DOING THIS, BUT SOMETIMES I CAN'T HELP IT. HERE IS A TYPO ON PAGE 57. >> IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE. PURCHASE ORDER ENDING IN 2307 IS A PYPO. TYPO. I'M SORRY, Y'ALL. I DON'T TRY TO CATCH THEM. THEY JUST COME UP. I WAS A PROOF READER. >> YOU SAID 37 MS. ARMSTRONG? PAGE 37? >> PURCHASE ORDER ENDING IN 2307 ON PAGE 57. >> IT IS PAGE 7. >> YOU HAVE A TYPO ON PAGE 7. >> SPEECH BANANAS? >> I BELIEVE SHE IS JUST LOOKING AT THIS, BUT YOU ARE LOOKING AT THE WHOLE ENTIRE DOCUMENT SO IT IS 7 FOR HER AND 57 FOR YOU. >> YES, PAGE 7 AND TOWARD THE MIDDLE OF THE PAGE. >> YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT PO307. >> YEAH. IT IS SPELLED WRONG. >> THANK YOU FOR THE FEEDBACK, MS. ARMSTRONG. WE WILL TAKE A LOOK AT THAT. >> NO BIG DEAL. >> THANK YOU, BOARD MEMBER ARMSTRONG. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? VERY WELL. LET'S TAKE ROLL CALL. >> MR. MENDOZA. >> I. >> MS. ARMSTRONG. >> I. >> DR. ELHESSEN. >> I. >> MS. STEWART. >> I. >> MR. CRIHFIELD. >> I. >> MRS. GARZA. >> I. >> AND NOW WE GO TO THE SECTION OF INFORMATIONAL ITEMS. [11. INFORMATION ITEMS] DO WE HAVE QUESTIONS ON THE INFORMATIONAL ITEMS THIS EVENING? HEARING NONE, LET'S GO OVER TO OUR BOARD/STAFF COMMENTS. WE WILL BEGIN WITH BOARD MEMBER MENDOZA. >> DOESN'T DR. DRATI GO AND THEN WE GO? >> I WILL MAKE MINE QUICK TO GIVE SPACE TO YOU GUYS. I JUST WANTED TO MAKE SURE THE COMMUNITY UNDERSTANDS THE LAST FOUR WEEKS THAT WE HAVE -- FOR SOME REASON FRIDAYS SEEM TO BE THINGS HAPPENING IN THE COMMUNITY IN TERMS OF SAFETY AND THINGS LIKE THAT. I WANTED TO TELL THE BOARD AND THE COMMUNITY THAT OUR STAFF HAS RESPONDED WELL TO A LOT OF THESE SITUATIONS. YOU CAN NEVER PREDICT SOME OF HAPPENING. FOR EXAMPLE, THE CAR CHASE BEHIND MAYFAIR AND -- YEAH. MAYFAIR. THAT WAS A SCARY SITUATION AND BOTH PRINCIPALS RESPONDED WELL. WE WERE ABLE TO COMMUNICATE TO THE FAMILIES. OBVIOUSLY YOU SAW WHAT HAPPENED AT BELLFLOWER HIGH SCHOOL. IF IT WASN'T FOR STUDENTS RESPONDING AND ACTUALLY EXECUTING THE PLAN WHICH IS SEE SOMETHING, TELL SOMETHING, WE WOULDN'T KNOW. I COMMEND THE STUDENTS. AND THE LAST THING CITY WANT THE WHOLE COMMUNITY TO -- THIS IS A SMALL COMMUNITY AND PEOPLE KNOW EACH OTHER. I RECOGNIZE THAT THAT'S A SCARY THING, BUT WE HAVE SEVERAL SICK TIMES IN -- VICTIMS. THE STAFF AND STUDENTS AND COMMUNITY, BUT EVEN THE FAMILY THAT IS INVOLVED IS A VICTIM TOO. I ASK FOR EVERYBODY TO HAVE COMPASSION. WE WILL DO OUR BEST TO HELP EVERYONE. WE ARE WORKING CLOSE WITH AUTHORITIES TO MAKE SURE WE ARE IN CLOSE CONTACT WITH THEM ABOUT ISSUES OCCURRING IN THE COMMUNITY. IF THERE ARE GANG ISSUES IN THE COMMUNITY WE ARE IN THE PROCESS OF TRYING TO UNDERSTAND THOSE THINGS SO WE CAN INFORM OUR SCHOOLS AND STUDENTS AND HELP AS MUCH AS WE CAN. I JUST WANTED TO PUT THAT OUT THERE THAT WE ARE PAYING ATTENTION AND NOT IGNORING THE MATTER AND WE WILL LET THE COMMUNITY KNOW. THANK YOU. >> THANK YOU. SHOULD I BEGIN? >> YES. GO AHEAD. >> GOOD EVENING, EVERYONE. BEFORE I START MY BOARD MEMBERS UPDATE I WOULD LIKE TO COMMENT ON THE SIGNIFICANCE OF TODAY'S DATE. AS LIZZY STATED YESTERDAY WAS INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY AND THE REMAINDER OF THE MONTH IS WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH. LET'S RECOGNIZE IN BELLFLOWER OUR LEADERSHIP HASN'T ALWAYS LOOKED THE WAY IT DOES TODAY. THE FACES OF THE USD CHANGED AND IT ENRICHED THE QUALITY OF SERVICES. THE MAJORITY OF OUR BOARD AND CABINET ARE WOMEN. I WOULD LIKE TO RECOGNIZE THAT. I AM PROUD THIS DOSCE -- DIOSCE LOOKS DIFFERENT THAN CITY KWOUPB SILL'S -- CITY COUNCIL'S. I WOULD LIKE TO THANK THOSE WOMEN WHO HELPED SHAPE ME AND MY [02:35:01] IDENTITY. HAPPY WOMEN'S MONTH. I WOULD LIKE TO RECOGNIZE THAT IN FOUR DAYS MARKS THE THREE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF COVID-19, HALTING OUR COMMUNITY'S LIVES AND SEWING DEEP UNCERTAINTY INTO EVERYONE'S CONSCIENCE. WE WERE ALL PERSONALLY IMPACTED BY THAT FATEFUL FRIDAY AND EVERYONE HAS A STORY ABOUT WHERE THEY WERE AND WHEN THEY HEARD THE SCHOOL WOULD BE CLOSING IN TWO WEEKS AND TWO WEEKS BECAME MONTHS AND AFTERWARDS IT WAS APPARENT THAT WE WERE DEALING WITH SPH-BG WE NEVER HAD BEFORE -- SOMETHING WE NEVER HAD BEFORE. I DON'T WANT TO BRING BACK BAD MEMORIES SO I WANT TO EXPRESS MY GRATITUDE TO YOU ALL FOR ACTUALLY SAVING MY LIFE DURING THAT PERIOD. I HAVEN'T BEEN OPEN, BUT DURING THE PANDEMIC I EXPERIENCED A SERIES OF MENTAL HEALTH CRISIS. I WAS STRUGGLING WITH IMMENSE LONELINESS AND GENDER DISFOR YAW AND WHERE MY RELATIONSHIP WITH FAMILY AND FRIENDS STOOD. IT WAS DISTANCE LEARNING THAT GAVE ME STRUCTURE. WE RECOGNIZE THE SHORT COMINGS OF THE YEAR INCLUDING QUALITY OF INSTRUCTION. AT THAT TIME THOSE QUIET GOOGLE MEET CALLS WERE A BEACON OF LIGHT. I WOULD LIKE TO SHARE ONE INSTANCE WHERE I WAS EXTREMELY UPSET IN MY AP WORLD HISTORY CLASS. I COULD SEE IN THE SMALL BOX IN THE CORNER OF MY CHROME BOOK I LOOKED VISIBLY DISTRESSED. I WAS SO DEEP IN PANIC I DIDN'T CARE. I WAS HAVING KIND OF AN INTENSE TIME RIGHT THERE. MY MOM WAS SITTING OFF IN THE LIVING ROOM. SHE RECEIVED A PHONE CALL. SHE WALKED OVER TO BEHIND WHERE I WAS STANDING AND I REALIZE THAT MY HISTORY TEACHER WAS CALLING MY MOM AND EXPRESSING CONCERN ABOUT HER OBSERVATIONS ABOUT MY MENTAL HEALTH FOR THAT WHOLE SEMESTER. THAT NIGHT POLICE OFFICERS ARRIVED AT MY HOUSE AND CONDUCTED A WELLNESS CHECK. DURING MY CONVERSATION WITH THE OFFICERS IT WAS CLEAR THAT SOMEONE ELSE HAD CALLED. I LATE YOU ARE -- I LATER FOUND OUT IT WAS A NEIGHBOR AND IT WAS A YEAR OF SOCIAL SERVICES INTERVIEWING MY FAMILY. I FELT LIKE THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM BECAUSE I WAS CAUSING MY FAMILY BRIEF -- GRIEF. WHAT HELPED IS THE REMAINDER OF THE SCHOOL YEAR THE TEACHER CALLED MY MOM AND WAS PATIENT WITH ME AND SUPPORTIVE. SHE ALONG WITH ALL OF THE OTHER TEACHERS AND DIRECTLY THE PEOPLE IN THIS ROOM WHO MADE DISTANCE LEARNING POSSIBLE. YOU PULLED ME OUT OF A DARK PLACE. THAT'S ONE OF THE PURPOSES OF PUBLIC EDUCATION. IT IS A BIT OF HOPE FOR EVERYONE NO MATTER HOW TROUBLED TIMES ARE. ON MONDAY I WOULD ASK YOU TO CHECK IN ON FRIENDS AND FAMILY AND IF THEY TALK ABOUT HOW THEY EXPERIENCED THE PANDEMIC, SHARE MAJOR STORIES. MOVING ON FROM THAT. SORRY. THAT WAS HEAVY. I WANT TO SPEAK NOW ON MY BOARD WORK FOR THE LAST MONTH. I WAS AT THE MAYFAIR CABINET TRAINING AND I CANNOT EXPLAIN HOW BLOWN AWAY I AM AT THEM. THEY ARE A MAY FARE-FOCUSED THINK TANK AND HONORED TO BE AN ASSOCIATE OF THE COUNCIL. IT IS BRILLIANT THAT THE MAIN MEMBERS ARE FRESH FACES AND I AM NOT A PART OF THAT. I ACT AS AN ADVISOR, BUT THERE IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR OTHER STUDENT LEADERS TO FIND THEIR VOICE. I DID SOME ACTIVE LISTENING LESSONS. LATER THIS MONTH THE CABINET WILL HOST AN OPEN FORUM FOR STUDENTS ON THE PROPOSED CHANGES TO THE BELL SCHEDULE. THAT'S SOMETHING COMING TO MAYFAIR. THEY WANT TO HEAR SOME GROUNDED FACTS. THE CABINET WILL HELP OUR STUDENT BODY UNDERSTAND THE CHANGES AND THEY ARE GOING TO HEAR OUT WHAT THE STUDENTS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT REFORMING THE BELL SCHEDULE. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO SPEAKING WITH STUDENTS AT BELLFLOWER HIGH SCHOOL TO SEE HOW THEIR SITE CAN START SOMETHING SIMILAR. I BELIEVE THE CREATION OF THE NEW KIND OF STUDENT GOVERNMENTS THAT ARE GRASSROOTS CAN HELPEN REUFRP -- HELP ENRICH THE STUDENT VOICE AND RELIEVING SOME OF THE WORK ON BOARD MEMBERS. LASTLY CLOSING OUT MY BOARD MEMBER UPDATES, SPEAKING OF FUTURE STUDENT MEMBERS OF THE BOARD, ELECTION SEASON IS COMING UP. THE SUPERINTENDENT'S ADVISORY COUNCIL MET LAST WEEK TO, AMONG OTHER THINGS, REVISE THE WAY IN WHICH STUDENTS CAN SERVE ON THE BOARD. OUR CONVERSATION WAS SO ENERGIZED THAT WE MOVED OUR NEXT MEETING UP. IT IS GOING TO BE AT THE END OF THE MONTH AND WE WILL TALK ABOUT HOW TO IMPROVE THE POSITION. YESTERDAY I MET WITH DR. DRATI TO TALK ABOUT MY EXPERIENCE IN THE ROLE AND HOW TO MAKE THE POSITION MORE EFFECTIVE. SO FAR OUR DISCUSSIONS HAVE RAISED THE POSSIBILITY OF MORE THAN ONE MEMBER WHICH I AM A STRONG SUPPORTER OF. [02:40:02] WHEN BILLY SILVA CAME FORWARD AND HELD UP A PAPER TALKING ABOUT HOW MANY SIGNATURES HE COLLECTED FOR TWO MEMBERS. I AM A STRONG BELIEVER OF THAT. THIS ROLE IS A TWO-PERSON ROLE. I HAD A LOT OF TROUBLE GETTING OUT REACH TO OTHER CAMPUSES FROM A MAYFAIR PERSPECTIVE. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO WHAT DRY COUNCIL COMES UP WITH. I DON'T WANT TO GET AHEAD OF MY SUGGESTIONS BECAUSE IT IS THEM, THOSE FOLKS WHO WILL BE SERVED BY THE BOARD MEMBER. I WILL BE IN COLLEGE. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO HEARING WHAT THEY COME UP WITH AND WITH THAT THAT IS MY BOARD MEMBER UPDATE. [APPLAUSE]. >> THANK YOU, BOARD MEMBER, MEN TKAU SWRAU, AND -- MENDOZA AND THANK YOU FOR BEING VULNERABLE AND GIVING US YOUR TRAO*US -- YOUR TRUST. BOARD MEMBER ARMSTRONG? >> HELLO, EVERYONE. I AM SO GLAD EVERYBODY IS OUT AND -- OUT AND PARTICIPATING THIS IS AN EXCITING TIME FOR BELLFLOWER UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT. I HAVE BEEN CONTINUING MY CLASSES FOR WATER EDUCATION. I DON'T WANT TO GO INTO DETAILS BECAUSE I DON'T WANT TO SPOIL THE EXCITE -- THE EXCITEMENT OF THE PROGRAM. OUR BOARD PRESIDENT WILL BE GOING THROUGH THE PROGRAM. I DID ATTEND THE CELEBRATION FOR ROBERT GARCIA I ATTENDED THE CHEER COMPETITION FOR BELLFLOWER. WELL, IT WAS A BUILD OLD COMPETITION AND OUR GIRLS, OUR CHEERLEADERS WAS THERE, AND WE ACTUALLY HAVE TWO GIRLS THAT WAS ON THE ALL-AMERICAN TEAM SO WE GOT TO SEE THOSE TWO MEMBERS PERFORM WITH MEMBERS FROM ACROSS CALIFORNIA. YOU -- A LOT OF FUN. AGAIN, I'M CONTINUING TO PARTICIPATE IN THE L.A. COUNTY SCHOOL TRUSTY ASSOCIATION. I ATTENDED THE 41ST LAKEWOOD HALL OF FAME. AND I TELL YOU, WE HAVE EXCELLENT STUDENTS. THEY ARE EXCELLENT ATHLETES AND MOST OF THEM, THEY EXCEL WITH THEIR GRADES WHICH IS REALLY, REALLY IMPRESSIVE. MY DAUGHTER IS A CHEERLEADER SO I GET A CHANCE TO GO TO THE LITTLE BANQUETS THEY HAVE. THE SAME WHEN MY DAUGHTER WAS IN TENNIS. THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS THEY DON'T BRING TO THE BOARD. BUT AS A PARENT I ATTENDED LIKE THE END OF THE YEAR BANQUET OR THE END OF THE SEASON BANQUET FOR SOCCER AND FOR TENNIS AND FOR BAND AND NOW FOR CHEERLEADING. THEY ARE HAVING THE END OF THE SEASON BANQUETS AND THAT'S A LOT OF FUN. I MET WITH SPEAKER ANTHONY RENDON ABOUT SOME PROJECTS THAT IS GOING TO BE HAPPENING IN THE FUTURE. YOU WILL HEAR ABOUT THOSE PLANS. I MET THE WASC TEAM AS THEY CAME OUT. THEY EVALUATED OUR SCHOOL. I ATTENDED THE PTA REFLECTIONS. THAT'S ALWAYS FUN. I REMEMBER WHEN MY DAUGHTER WAS A PART OF IT. I DON'T KNOW IF MS. RITA REMEMBERS. AND I ALSO ATTENDED A 25TH GALA DINNER FOR THE CHINESE FRIENDSHIP ASSOCIATION. A LOT OF FUN AND MEETING A LOT OF PEOPLE AND MAKING CONNECTIONS. THAT'S IT FOR ME. >> THANK YOU BOARD MEMBER ARMSTRONG. BOARD MEMBER DR. ELHESSEN. >> THANK YOU. LOST MY MIC. I PARTICIPATED IN READ ACROSS AMERICA I HAD A GREAT TIME AT WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY. I MET OUR KNEW VICE PRINCIPAL, MR. PHILIP SANCHEZ AND I READ TO OUR MODERATE TO SEVERE THIRD GRADE CLASS AND THEY WERE SO ENGAGED AND SO EXCITED. THEY WANTED ME TO READ TWO BOOKS ON DR. SUESS. ONE OF THE STUDENTS ASKED ME IF I WAS MARRIED TO DR. SUESS WHICH I THOUGHT WAS REALLY CUTE. OVERALL GREAT EXPERIENCE. I ALSO ATTENDED THE WASC MEETING WELCOME AND RECEPTION. WE HAD A GREAT MEETING WITH THE [02:45:04] BOARD AND THE PANEL. AND I ALSO ATTENDED THE CAREER FAIR AT SOMERSET WHICH WAS REALLY GREAT. I WAS ABLE TO CONNECT WITH NOT ONLY A GROUP CALLED LONG BEACH JOB CORP -- IS THAT WHAT IT IS CALLED? THE REASON I BRING THAT UP IS I WORK STRONGLY WITH THE FOSTER YOUTH AND I WANTED TO PUT IT OUT TO COUNSELORS TO ENGAGE STUDENTS IN THE PROCESS WHERE STUDENTS ARE AGING OUT AND HAVE A PLACE TO GO BESIDES THE MILITARY. I AM ALL FOR THE MILITARY, BUT I BELIEVE STUDENTS SHOULD HAVE OPTIONS TO CHOOSE FROM. THAT'S ONE OPTION AND THEY PROVIDE TRAINING AND HOUSING AND SHELTER AND A SMALL STIPEND. I WAS READING ESSAYS. ONE OF OUR COMMUNITY MEMBERS HAS AN INTERIOR -- NOT INTERIOR, BUT FASHION DESIGN BUSINESS. SHE IS DONATING PROM DRESSES TO THREE HIGH SCHOOLS FOR OUR YOUNG LADIES TO WRITE AN ESSAY ON EMPOWERMENT. SHE ASKED ME TO READ THE ESSAYS. I DID AND I WAS HAPPY TO PARTICIPATE. SO SHE IS ALLOCATING A PROM DRESS TO EACH STUDENT IN ONE OF OUR HIGH SCHOOLS. SO SOMERSET, MAYFAIR AND BELLFLOWER. WE CONCLUDED OUR INTERVIEWS WITH OUR FIRMS AND WILL BE PRESENTING IT TO OUR FELLOW BOARD. I WANTED TO ACTUALLY TALK ABOUT SOMEONE FOR WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH, A WOMAN WHO PASSED AWAY. HER NAME IS JUDY HUMAN. AND SHE WAS -- THEY CALLED HER ONE OF THE TPHEUPBD -- FOUNDING FATHERS OF THE AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT. SHE WAS THE FIRST WOMAN TO GET HER TEACHING CREDENTIAL IN NEW YORK, BUT DENIED TEACHING BECAUSE SHE WAS IN A WHEEL WHEELCHAIR. SHE FOUGHT THE STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION AND THEY SAID HER WHEELCHAIR WOULD BE A FIRE HAZARD. SO SHE ENDED UP TEACHING AND LATER SERVED FOR PRESIDENT CLINTON AND PRESIDENT OBAMA'S ADMINISTRATION IN SPECIAL ED -- ASSISTANT TO SPECIAL ED SERVICES AND SHE HELD POSITIONS WITH THE WORLD BANK. SHE DID A HISTORIC 1977504 SIT IN -- 1977 504 SIT IN. THE DEMONSTRATION IMPLEMENTED SAOEUF 04 OF THE -- 504 OF THE RE REHABILITATION ACT. THIS IS WHAT SUPPORTS STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES IN GETTING ACCOMMODATIONS IN THE CLASSROOM. SHE WAS A PIONEER IN MANY AREAS OF CIVIL RIGHTS. SHE HAS LIFTED THE LIVES OF EVERY CONTINENT AND COUNTRY AND COMMUNITY ON THE PLANET. AND SO SHE CONTACTED POLIO AT THE AGE OF 2 AND PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 75. I WOULD LIKE TO ACKNOWLEDGE HER CONTRIBUTION TO NOT ONLY THE LIVES OF PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES, BUT TO EDUCATION AS A WHOLE. THANK YOU. >> [APPLAUSE]. >> THANK YOU DR. ELHESSEN. >> BOARD MEMBER STEWART. >> GOOD EVENING. I HAVE BEEN VERY BUSY THE LAST TWO WEEKS. I ATTENDED MAYFAIR'S THE FAIR GARZA. WE WERE GIVEN A TOUR OF THE PROGRAMS AND VISITED THE SPECIAL EDUCATION CLASS AND RECEIVED GOOD FEEDBACK. WE SPOKE WITH COUNSELORS IN THE WELLNESS CENTER AND RECEIVED DATA ON WHAT STUDENTS -- WHAT NEEDS ARE BEING ADDRESSED MOST OFTEN SO WE CAN THINK ABOUT THAT IN THE FUTURE. THE CHOIR AND THE BAND WERE AWESOME WE POPPED INTO MR. FONG'S CLASS. I LOVE YOUR TILES. I AM GOING TO COPY THOSE. AND THE STUDENTS AND PARENTS WERE HAPPY TO BE THERE. WE WATCHED PART OF A PRESENTATION FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR AND MY FAVORITE CLASS WAS THE FORENSICS CLASS. IT WAS INTERESTING AND INTRIGUING TO ME. I WANTED TO BE IN THE CLASS. I LOVED THAT AND I LOVE THE ENERGY ON THE CAMPUS. IT WAS A GREAT NIGHT. THE KIDS WERE JUST REALLY INVOLVED. THAT'S REALLY NICE. I ALSO ATTENDED THE CELEBRATION FOR -- I MET LOCAL LEADERS AND COLLABORATED. CONGRESSMAN GARCIA WILL BE VISITING SOME OF OUR SCHOOLS IN THE NEAR FUTURE. [02:50:02] THAT IS EXCITING. IT IS IMPORTANT TO MEET WITH LOCAL COMMUNITY LEADERS AS WELL. I ATTENDED THE LAKEWOOD YOUTH SPORTS HALL OF FAME ALONG WITH GARZA, CRIHFIELD, ARMSTRONG, DRATI AND DIAZ. BEING AN ATHLETE MYSELF I APPRECIATE HOW HARD ALL OF THESE ATHLETES WORK. IT WAS AN HONOR TO CELEBRATE THE AMAZING YOUNG SUPERSTARS AND TO BE RECOGNIZED. I AGREE WITH HAHNABLE -- HONORABLE ARMSTRONG. IT IS AMAZING NOT ONLY TO SEE WHAT THEY ARE DOING ON THE FIELD, BUT THE CLASSROOMS. I ATTENDED THE READ ACROSS AMERICA CELEBRATION IN LINDSTROM. I STARTED WITH DR. ROBINSON'S WIND -- KINDERGARTEN CLASS. THEY HAD TREATS AND SIDE NOTE I WAS IMPRESSED THAT DR. ROBINSON COULD GET THAT MANY LITTLE ONES IN A PICTURE AT ONE TIME. I WAS SUPER IMPRESSED. I READ TO A SECOND GRADE CLASS AND "I PROMISE" BY LEBRON JAMES. I DIDN'T REALIZE WHAT AN EXCELLENT BOOK THAT WAS. SHE EVEN GAVE ME MY OWN COPY, THANK YOU SO MUCH. AND THAT WAS VERY SPECIAL. SIDE NOTE, ME AND HER WENT TO BELLFLOWER HIGH SCHOOL AND SHE HAS BEEN IN THE DISTRICT 27 YEARS AND WE WERE TEAMMATES FOR FOUR YEARS. I LOVE HER. THANK YOU FOR LETTING ME COME AND READ IN YOUR CLASSROOM. I WENT TO MS. CUMMINGS CLASS AND HAD A BLAST TALKING WITH THE KIDS. THEY ASKED SO MANY GREAT QUESTIONS AND THEY WERE POLITE AND ADORABLE. IT WAS NICE. I SPENT 20 MINUTES IN THERE GETTING TO KNOW THEM. I APPRECIATED THAT. THANK YOU AGAIN TO DR. RIOS FOR HAVING ME. I ATTENDED THE C TASKS A LOCAL EQUITY TEAM SAW -- CTA LOCAL EQUITY TEAM MEETING AND ATTENDED WASC WITH OTHER BOARD MEMBERS. IT WAS MY FIRST TIME IT WAS NICE TO LEARN AND SEE HOW OUR SCHOOLS ARE EVALUATED. WASC IS TAKING OUR SCHOOL PLANS AND MAKING SURE IT IS BEING IMPLEMENTED BY EVALUATING THE EVIDENCE. WASC ASSURES THE COMMUNITY THAT THERE IS QUALITY DEVELOPING STANDARDS AND PROMOTING A CULTURE OF EVIDENCE AND PROMOTING ENGAGEMENT AND DEVELOPING UH -- ADAPTIVE SYSTEMS FOR REVIEW AND EVALUATION AND PROMOTING AN EXCHANGE OF IDEAS. THAT WAS AN INTERESTING PROCESS TO GO THROUGH. IF APPROVED IT IS GOOD FOR THREE TO SIX YEARS. AND THEY SAID THE WELCOME RECEPTION WAS ONE OF THE BEST THEY HAVE SEEN AND KUDOS TO BELLFLOWER HIGH SCHOOL FOR HAVING A GREAT EVENT. I LOOK FORWARD TO READING THE RECOMMENDATIONS IN THE FUTURE. I TOOK A TOUR OF THE CFGC WITH OUR BELLFLOWER EXECUTIVE. CFGC IS A COMMUNITY FAMILY GUIDANCE CENTER AND IT SERVICES STUDENTS IN THE COMMUNITY. THEIR MISSION IS TO SERVE THE UNDESERVED CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES TO HEAL FROM TRAUMA, ABUSE, EMOTION -- EMOTIONAL, BEHAVIORAL THROUGH PROVEN INTERVENTIONS AND COMPASSION AND GUIDANCE AND ALL OF THE SERVICES ARE FREE AT NO COST TO FAMILIES. IF ANYONE NEEDS THESE SERVICES THE NUMBER IS 855-329-8080. AND LASTLY I ATTENDED THE REFLECTION CEREMONY WITH MENDOZA AND ARMSTRONG AND CRIHFIELD AND PRESIDENT GARZA. THE ARTWORK WAS BEAUTIFUL AND THE KIDS WERE SO EXCITED TO RECEIVE THEIR CERTIFICATE AND THE RECOGNITION AND THE GIFTS. THEIR FACES WERE BEAMING. IT MEANT SO MUCH TO THEM. AND YOU CAN SEE HOW LITTLE THINGS MAKE OUR STUDENTS HAPPY. PLEASE JOIN THE PTA. AND MAYFAIR SOFTBALL, THEY WERE 6-0 AND I THINK THEY WERE 7-0. AWESOME JOB. YOU ARE HAVING A GREAT SEASON. THANK YOU SO MUCH. >> THANK YOU, BOARD MEMBER STEWART. BOARD MEMBER CRIHFIELD? >> IT IS HARD TO BELIEVE IT HAS ONLY BEEN TWO WEEKS BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE WE HAD SO MANY EVENTS. I COUNTED NINE THAT I WENT TO. I WON'T TALK ABOUT EACH ONE. I WILL JUST POINT OUT A COUPLE, BUT THE MAYFAIR FAIR, THAT WAS AWESOME. IT WAS AWESOME TO TOUR THEM. ESPECIALLY AS A NEWER BOARD MEMBER GETTING ON CAMPUS AND SEEING EVERYTHING FIRSTHAND. ROBERT GASH SEE YAW -- ROBERT GARCIA'S EVENT WAS A BLAST. AND I AM VERY EXCITED THAT HE WILL BE VISITING ON MONDAY I THINK. MAKING THE CONNECTIONS AND BUILDING THE RELATIONSHIPS WILL BE REALLY IMPORTANT. I AM GLAD WE ARE DOING THAT. I WAS ABLE TO HAVE LUNCH WITH [02:55:03] DR. DRATI AND DR. MUNOZ WHICH IS GREAT BECAUSE I CAN BE A FLY ON THE WALL AND LEARN HOW THESE RELATIONSHIPS WORK. IT IS EDUCATIONAL FOR MYSELF LAKEWOOD HALL OF FAME -- NOT TRYING TO THROW SHAME, BUT LAKEWOOD IS CELEBRATING FOUR DISTRICTS AND THEY WERE CELEBRATING STUDENTS FROM ALL THE SCHOOLS. NOT A SINGLE BOARD MEMBER FROM ANY OF THE OTHER SCHOOL DISTRICTS, BUT WE HAD FOUR BOARD MEMBERS. I THINK OUR EFFORTS OF BEING IN THE COMMUNITY IS -- ARE OBVIOUS AND I THINK WE ARE REALLY ON THE RIGHT TRACK TO MAKING A STATEMENT THAT BUSD WILL BE THE BEST SCHOOL DISTRICT IN THE AREA AND I THINK WE ARE ALL DOING THE RIGHT THINGS IN THAT REGARD. READ ACROSS AMERICA WAS COOL. THAT'S PROBABLY THE LONGEST I HAVE READ IN A LONGTIME. I'M JUST KIDDING. IT IS PRETTY CLOSE. I WENT TO TOMAS JEFFERSON AND READ TO A KINDERGARTEN CLASS. I READ "THE DAY THE CRAYONS QUIT." IT IS GREAT. LEAGUE INTERVIEWS, WE WRAPPED THOSE UP. WE WILL BE BRINGING THOSE RECOMMENDATIONS EXCITED ABOUT THAT. LAKEWOOD RUN WAS GREAT AND WASC ACCREDITATION AND BOARD MEETING AND PTA INFLECTIONS. AND THANK YOU FOR INCLUDING ME. I JUST SHOWED UP BECAUSE I WAS AT THE MEETINGS. I FELT BAD NOT TO STAY FOR THE PHOTOS, BUT IT WAS GREAT TO WALK ACROSS THE PARKING LOT AND BE THERE FOR THAT TOO. I AM TRYING TO BE AT AS MANY THINGS AS I COMBINE. AS I CAN. IT IS A LOT. I THINK PEOPLE THINK YOU SHOW UP TO ONE BOARD MEETING OR TWO BOARD MEETINGS A MONTH. THERE IS A LOT THAT GOES INTO IT. I THINK BUSD IS GREAT TO BE AN ACTIVE BOARD AND CARES ABOUT THE DISTRICT. THANK YOU, STAFF, FOR ANSWERING QUESTIONS. I FEEL GOOD ABOUT THE DIRECTION WE ARE GOING IN. JUST OPTIMISTIC AS ALWAYS AND A BUSY COUPLE WEEKS. WE'LL SEE HOW LONG I CAN KEEP IT UP. THANK YOU FOR STICKING AROUND TONIGHT. [APPLAUSE]. >> THANK YOU, BOARD MEMBER. I THINK MY COLLEAGUES HAVE SUMMED EVERYTHING UP. I HAVE BEEN PRESENT FOR MOST OF THOSE EVENTS SOME I WASN'T ABLE TO ATTEND BECAUSE I WAS ELSEWHERE WITH OTHER THINGS GOING ON. I DID WANT TO ADD ON MY END, I DID HAVE A DINNER WITH SOME KEY PEOPLE, WITH JPL. PRETTY SOON, HOPEFULLY, WE WILL BE MAKING A CONNECTION TO THEM FOR JPD AND CALTECH. THAT WAY OUR STUDENTS CAN HAVE INTERNSHIPS. THAT'S WHEN THEY GET INTO THE HIGH SCHOOL PORTION OF THEIR ACADEMIC CAREER. AND VERY, VERY EXCITED FOR THAT TO COME INTO FRUITION AT SOME POINT IN THE FUTURE. THANK YOU VERY MUCH, EVERYONE. STAFF, WONDERFUL JOB TODAY. I KNOW WE ASKED A LOT OF QUESTIONS OF YOU. ALSO OUR TEAM WHO CAME AND PRESENTED THAT BOOK ADOPTION, AMAZING JOB. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR COMMITMENT AND YOUR SERVICE TO OUR KIDS. THANK YOU. [APPLAUSE]. AT THIS TIME IF THE BOARD -- THE BOARD WILL NOW BE GOING BACK TO A CLOSED SESSION. IF THERE IS NO OBJECTION THE MEETING IS ADJOURNED AT 9:00 UNTIL THE REGULAR BOARD MEETING WILL BEHELD ON MARCH 23RD. * This transcript was compiled from uncorrected Closed Captioning.
