[1. CALL TO ORDER IN PUBLIC SESSION]
[00:00:05]
>>> GOOD AFTERNOON, EVERYONE. TONIGHT'S MEETING OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION -- HI. GOOD AFTERNOON, EVERYONE.
IT IS NICE TO SEE EVERYBODY HERE.
THANK YOU FOR COMING AND JOINING US TONIGHT.
TONIGHT'S MEETING OF THE BOARD OF EDUCATION IS CALLED TO ORDER AT 4:02 P.M. IN OPEN SESSION. TONIGHT WE HAVE REQUESTS ADDRESSING CLOSED SESSION AGENDA ITEMS. WHILE MEETINGS OF THE GOVERNING BOARD ARE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC, INDIVIDUAL SPEAKERS ARE ALLOWED THREE MINUTES TO ADDRESS THE BOARD ON EACH AGENDA OR NON-AGENDA ITEM AND THE BOARD WILL LIMIT THE TIME ON PUBLIC INPUT FOR EACH ITEM 20 MINUTES.
COULD WE HAVE AMY MUSTAFA TO THE PODIUM.
AMY MUSTAFA. GOOD AFTERNOON PRESIDENT GARZA AND BOARD MEMBERS. I AM HERE TODAY TO URGE YOU TO GIVE THE DISTRICT AUTHORITY TO AGREE TO BTA SALARY PROPOSAL.
YESTERDAY'S BARGAINING WAS VERY PRODUCTIVE.
BTA FEELS VERY POSITIVE ABOUT THE DISTRICT'S WILLING -- WILLINGNESS TO LISTEN AND COLLABORATE.
WE ARE CLOSE TO HAVING AN AGREEMENT ON SKAL VEE -- SALARY.
WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT. CHANGE IS ON THE HORIZON AND TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN. BELLFLOWER CAN BE THE DISTRICT THAT FAMILIES, STUDENTS AND TEACHERS WANT TO BE A PART OF.
BUSD IS HAVING TROUBLE HIRING AND RETAINING STAFF WITH OUR CURRENT SALARY SCHEDULE. YOU HAVE TAKEN MANY STEPS IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION! I URGE YOU TO LET GO OF THE PREVIOUS MIND-SET OF SCARCITY AND FEAR.
USD HAS ALWAYS SAVED MONEY FOR A RAINY DAY.
WHEN IT WAS ACTUALLY RAINING, THE DISTRICT DID NOT SPEND THE MONEY. AS A RESULT OF THIS, THE RESERVE CONTINUED TO GROW. THERE IS PLENTY OF ONGOING MONEY. GIVING TEACHERS THE MONEY WE DESERVE IS NOT GOING TO HURT THE DISTRICT FINANCIALLY.
THE DISTRICT IS VERY HEALTHY AND IT IS TIME TO COMPENSATE THE PEOPLE WHO WORK WITH THE STUDENTS.
PLEASE CONTINUE TO MOVE BUSD TOWARDS SUCCESS BY COMPENSATING THE PEOPLE WHO ARE WORKING WITH STUDENTS EVERY DAY.
WE TAUGHT AND WE PERSEVERED WITHOUT LEADERSHIP FOR MOST OF THIS SCHOOL YEAR. TEACHERS CAN BE COUNTED ON TO DO WHAT IS BEST FOR THE KID. IT IS TIME TO COMPENSATE THE TEACHERS. WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT NOW.
PLEASE VOTE TO ACCEPT BTA SALARY PROPOSAL.
BE THE CHANGE THAT WE NEED. THANK YOU.
[APPLAUSE]. >> THANK YOU, MS. MUSTAFA.
NEXT IS B T-FRBGS A PRESIDENT -- IS BTA PRESIDENT.
PLEASE COME TO THE PODIUM. [APPLAUSE].
>> GOOD AFTERNOON. PRESIDENT GARZA SCHOOL BOARD, ADMINISTRATION DR. ANDRATTI. IT HAS BEEN AN EXCITING FEW WEEKS GETTING TO KNOW OUR NEW SUPERINTENDENT.
IT HAS BEEN EXCITING TO HEAR WHEN HE GOES TO THE SITE HIS PLAN AND HIS VISION. I HAVE BEEN READING THE BOOKS HE HAS RECOMMENDED. I AM EXCITED FOR CHANGE.
AS YOU KNOW, I HAVE BEEN HERE FOREVER.
I AM RETIRING ON JUNE 3RD, AND I AM EXCITED TO GO OUT ON SUCH A POSITIVE FEELING AND POSITIVE NOTES.
WE NEED TO ALL WORK TOGETHER. LIKE I SAID, WE ARE STRONGER TOGETHER, WE ARE BETTER TOGETHER AND WE CAN MAKE BETTER DECISIONS ESPECIALLY WHEN WE TALK ABOUT -- WITH THE SUPERINTENDENT ON SITES AND NOT ON EVERYONE BEING A COOKIE CUTER.
I JUST WANT TO SAY TO YOU, PLEASE CONSIDER OUR PROPOSAL AND ACCEPT IT. WE KNOW FIRST WE NEED TO CATCH UP AND IN THE FUTURE WE NEED TO KEEP UP SO THAT WE CAN BE COMPETITIVE AND SERVE OUR STUDENTS WELL.
>> THANK YOU. NEXT WE HAVE -- ARE THERE ANY OTHER NON-AGENDA ITEMS? NO?
[00:05:01]
JUST WANTED TO CONFIRM. SO AT THIS TIME THE BOARD WILL
RECESS TO CLOSED SESSION -- >> [INAUDIBLE].
I'M SORRY. IT IS CHECKED OFF AGENDA ONLY.
BUT COME ON IN. >> I TEACH KINDERGARTEN.
>> SO ALL OF THEM. THANK YOU FOR THE CLARIFICATION.
>> THANK YOU, INSPIRING LEADERS. I WILL MANIFEST THAT BY PUTTING IT OUT IN THE UNIVERSE. WHAT I WANT TO TELL YOU IS THAT YESTERDAY AND A DECADE WE HAVE NEVER HAD A BARGAINING SESSION LIKE WE HAD YESTERDAY. OUR NEW SUPERINTENDENT WANTS TO FOSTER CREATIVE CONFLICT AND HE DID IT.
AND IT IS IMPORTANT THAT WE DO THAT, THAT WE SIT IN A SPACE THERE IS A LOT OF DISCOMFORT. WE FEEL COMFORTABLE, BUT THERE IS NEVER A SAFE FORUM FOR IT. WE HAVE TO AGREE TO DISAGREE AND STILL WORK THROUGH THE CONFLICT. YESTERDAY WAS THE FIRST TIME THAT WE FELT HEARD, VALUED AND FELT EQUAL TO THE PROCESS AND AS PEOPLE AND IN A DECADE WE HAVE NOT.
AND IT IS NOT THAT WE HAVEN'T BEEN VALUED.
IT IS HOW WE FEEL. SIMON CYNIC HAS DEVELOPED A GOLDEN CIRCLE. HOW HE WORKS WITH ORGANIZATIONS IS THIS, HE SAID EVERY ORGANIZATION IS FUNCTIONING IN THREE VENUES, WHAT, HOW AND WHY. THIS HAS STARTED FROM THE WHAT.
WHAT HAS BEEN PUSHED ON TO THE BOARD IS ESSENTIALLY YOU ARE CUSTODIANS OF THE BUDGET. THAT IS WHAT ALWAYS WE HEAR.
WE CAN'T DO THIS, CAN'T DO THIS, CAN'T DO THIS BECAUSE WE HAVE TO PROTECT THE BUDGET. I WANT YOU TO SEE HOW THE DISPARITY OF THAT MEANS YOU DON'T SEE YOUR REAL PURPOSE IS THAT YOU ARE THE CARETAKERS OF THE CHILDREN.
THE BUDGET IS IN SAW BOARD NATION TO -- SUBORDINATION TO THE CHILDREN AND THE NEEDS OF THE CHILDREN.
WHO I -- WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO YOU DO IS START WITH WHY.
INSTEAD OF STARTING WITH THE WHAT, START WITH THE WHY.
IN CASE YOU DON'T HAVE ONE I WROTE ONE FOR US.
YOU START WITH WHAT YOU BELIEVE. WE IN BUSD BELIEVE ALL CHILDREN CAN LEARN. WE BELIEVE IN EQUITY, DIVERSITY AND ACCESS. WE BELIEVE OUR MOST VALUABLE RESOURCE IS PEOPLE, AND THAT'S WHAT WE INVEST IN.
WE INVEST OUR MONEY. WE INVEST OUR CAPITAL.
WE INVEST OUR TIME IN THE PEOPLE.
NO BUILDING IS GONNA EDUCATE A KID.
NO MATTER IF IT FALLS DOWN. WE WILL GO OUT AND TEACH.
WE DO IT ALL THE TIME. YOU ARE NOT GONNA GET -- YOU WILL GET BACK WHAT YOU INVEST IN, AND IT IS ONLY GOING TO BE IN PEOPLE FROM THE PERSON WHO CLEANS THE FLOOR SO THE KID CAN SIT ON IT TO THE PERSON WHO STANDS IN FRONT OF THE ROOM.
YOU WANT PR? IT IS YOUR TEACHERS.
IT IS YOUR CUSTODIAL STAFF AND YOUR FACE IN THE DISTRICT.
GOOD PR IS DOING THE RIGHT THING AND THEN HAVING PEOPLE TALK ABOUT IT. THAT'S EASY FOR YOUR PR FIRM TO SPEND. WAIT.
THEY DON'T HAVE TO SPEND IT, THEY JUST HAVE TO TELL THE TRUTH IN THE COMMUNITY. IF WE LEAD WITH THE WHY, WE HAVE A CHANCE TO MAKE A REALLY BIG DIFFERENCE.
THE REALITY IS THAT WHAT YOU DO -- WHAT YOU DO SERVES AS PROOF AS WHAT YOU BELIEVE. TODAY WHAT I AM ENCOURAGING YOU, I WANT TO EMPOWER YOU TO SAY YES TO THE MONEY.
IF YOU HAVE TO SAY NO, SAY NO LATER.
SAY YES NOW. YOU JUST HIRED THIS PERSON WHO IS AN INSPIRING LEADER, BUT WHAT IS HAPPENING IS THERE ARE TWO THINGS GOING ON RIGHT NOW. YOU HAVE RESISTANCE AND PERCEPTION. SO RIGHT NOW THE PERCEPTION IS WE ARE NOT VALUED, WHETHER WE ARE OR AREN'T.
THE RESISTANCE IS WE ARE NOT VALUED.
PEOPLE CHECK OUT WHEN THEY DON'T FEEL VALUED.
THIS IS SET UP LIKE YOUR BRAIN. EXTERNALLY YOU HAVE YOUR NEO CORTEX AND THAT'S WHERE YOUR LOGIC AND YOUR VOICE AND THE LANGUAGE IS. THE PLACE THAT DRIVES MOTIVATION, INSPIRATION, LOYALTY IS YOUR AMIGDALA IN THE CENTER OF YOUR BRAIN. LEAD WITH KWR-FPLT ARE YOU THE
>> NEXT WE HAVE CHRISTINA WILLIAMS. PLEASE COME UP. [APPLAUSE].
>> GOOD AFTERNOON. I AM HERE TO SPEAK ABOUT BEING A TEACHER. I'M NOT GONNA GIVE YOU MY BACKGROUND STORY. EACH OF US BECAME A TEACHER FOR DIFFERENT REASONS. WE HAVE DIFFERENT LIFE EXPERIENCES, BUT WE ALL CAME TO BE TEACHERS IN BUSD.
I HAVE A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS. MY FIRST QUESTION IS, WHAT DO WE HAVE IN COMMON WITH TEACHERS IN SURROUNDING DISTRICTS? WE ALL LESSON PLAN, TEACH CONTENT, SERVE ON COMMITTEES, PARTICIPATE IN ACTIVITIES, TAKE CARE OF STUDENTS, THE LIST GOES ON AND ON. MY NEXT QUESTION IS WHAT DO WE
[00:10:02]
NOT HAVE IN COMMON WITH THESE TEACHERS AND SURROUNDING DISTRICTS? I CAME UP WITH TWO THINGS.A HUGE RESERVE AND COMPARABLE PAY.
WE DO THE SAME JOB, BUT WE DO NOT GET PAID CLOSE TO WHAT THEY GET. ALL OF THESE DISTRICTS PAY THEIR TEACHERS THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS MORE PER YEAR.
SOME OF THOSE DISTRICTS PAY MORE THAN $20,000 MORE PER YEAR.
OUR RESERVE INCREASES EVERY YEAR EVEN THOUGH THE BUDGET IS PROPOSED AS A YEAR OF DEFICIT SPENDING.
YET, AT THE END OF EVERY YEAR, WE HAVE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS THAT WERE NOT SPENT AND PUT INTO THE RESERVES.
WHY CAN'T YOU AFFORD TO PAY US A COMPETITIVE SALARY? WE'VE HEARD VARIOUS REASONS, DEFICIT SPENDING DECLINING ENROLLMENT AND SAVING FOR A RAINY DAY.
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME WE ENDED THE YEAR IN A DEFICIT? ENROLLMENT IS DECLINING ALL OVER THE STATE, BUT OTHER DISTRICTS GIVE THEIR EMPLOYEES GOOD RAISES.
WE JUST WENT THROUGH THE BIGGEST RAINY DAY OF ALL, THE PANDEMIC.
YET, THE DISTRICT DIDN'T HAVE TO SPEND THE RESERVE AND ACTUALLY ADDED TO THE RESERVE IN THE PANDEMIC.
THE REASONING DOES NOT SUPPORT THE CLAIM THAT YOU CANNOT AFFORD TO PAY US A COMPARABLE SALARY. SO WHY DON'T WE DESERVE TO BE PAID AS TEACHERS ARE IN SURROUNDING DISTRICTS? WE DOT SAME JOB AND WORK JUST AS HARD AS THEY DO.
SOME ARE EDUCATORS, AND YOU KNOW HOW MUCH WE PUT INTO THIS JOB.
OTHER DISTRICTS DEAL WITH THE SAME ISSUES BUSD DOES, YET THEY CONTINUE TO GIVE THEIR EMPLOYEES GOOD RAISES.
WHEN THE RESERVE GOES UP EVERY YEAR BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT ACTUALLY USING THE MONEY YOU WERE GIVEN, YOU SEND A MESSAGE TO THE STAFF THAT WE ARE NOT VALUED.
TODAY IS YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW YOU THAT YOU VALUE THE ROLE WE PLAY IN EDUCATING THE STUDENTS IN OUR COMMUNITY.
WE WORK HARD EVERY DAY AND DESERVE TO BE PAID A COMPARABLE SALARY TO TEACHERS IN SURROUNDING DISTRICTS.
>> THANK YOU FOR THAT, MS. WILLIAMS. COULD WE PLEASE HAVE ROBIN MITSBACH COME TO THE PODIUM?
[APPLAUSE]. >> MY NAME IS ROBIN AND I HAVE BEEN A TEACHER HERE FOR 15 YEARS AND I HAVE BEEN A MEMBER OF THE EXECUTIVE BOARD OF THE UNION FOR ABOUT SIX YEARS NOW.
I'M COMING TO SPEAK TO YOU INDEPENDENTLY AND NOT UNDER UNION DIRECTION. THERE IS A QUOTE THAT MAKES ME THINK OF THE TEACHERS HERE AT BUSD.
FOR WHERE YOUR TREASURE IS, YOUR HEART WILL FOLLOW.
IF SOMETHING IS OF VALUE TO YOU, IT IS EVIDENT BY YOUR PRIORITIES. FOR THE PAST 15 YEARS, IT HAS BEEN VERY EVIDENT THAT THE PRIORITIES IN BUSD HAVE BEEN TO SAVE MONEY AND BUILD A HUGE RESERVE.
IT HAS NOT BEEN TO SERVE OUR STUDENTS OR TAKE CARE OF EMPLOYEES IN THE DISTRICT. I AM HERE THIS AFTERNOON TO ASK THAT YOU CONTINUE THE TIDES OF CHANGE AND THE HEALING FOR OUR DISTRICT. I AM ASKING THAT YOU MAKE THE CHANGES NECESSARY TO PAY OUR TEACHERS A FAIR WAGE.
YOUR TEACHERS ENDURED EXCESSIVE CHANGE AT SITES, LACK OF ADEQUATE SUPPORT FOR STUDENTS AND STAFF AND INCREASINGLY DIFFICULT WORKING CONDITIONS ALL WHILE OUR DISTRICT HAS MADE BROKEN PROMISES ABOUT FUTURE COMPENSATION AND CLAIMED THAT WE WERE ON THE VERGE OF BANKRUPTCY WITH EVERY FINANCIAL REPORT.
AFTER LOOKING AT THE COMPENSATION FOR THE SURROUNDING DISTRICTS, IT IS CLEAR YOUR TEACHERS ARE IN CRISIS.
I'M TIRED FOR FIGHTING FOR WHAT MY TEACHERS DESERVE YEAR AFTER YEAR, THE WORK TO RULE, THE LACK OF FEELING VALUED AS WORKING CONDITIONS GET HARDER AND HARDER.
STUDENTS ARE COMING OUT OF A PANDEMIC WITH AN ACADEMIC DEFICIT. THEY ARE EMOTIONALLY SCARED AND -- SCARRED AND IT BECOMES MORE DIFFICULT.
ALL TO FIND OUT I MAKE 18 TO 22% LESS THAN TEACHERS IN THE NEIGHBORING DISTRICT. I LISTENED TO MANY TEACHERS TALK ABOUT LEAVING THE DISTRICT. WHO CAN BLAME THEM? MAYBE IT IS TIME TO PACK UP OUR MARBLES AND GO HOME.
YOUNGER TEACHERS ARE SEEING THAT THEY CANNOT AFFORD TO STAY, WHILE OLDER TEACHERS ARE BEING OFFERED MORE YEARS OF SERVICE CREDIT IN SURROUNDING DISTRICTS. WITH AN INCREASE IN PAY AND THE HOPE OF BETTER WORKING CONDITIONS THAN WE HAVE AT BUSD.
WE ALSO HAVE MANY TEACHERS NEAR RETIREMENT AGE WHO CANNOT AFFORD TO RETIRE WITH THE CURRENT COST OF LIVING.
IMAGINE WHAT $20,000 A YEAR COULD GO TO CHANGE THEIR LIVES.
I'M CERTAIN EVERY MEMBER OF THE SCHOOL BOARD WOULD FIGHT TO DO WHAT IS BEST FOR THEIR OWN FAMILIES.
I HOPE NOW IT IS THE SAME PASSION THAT YOU FIGHT TO MAKE YOUR EMPLOYEES' WAGES EQUITABLE TO THE SURROUNDING DISTRICTS.
MANY PEOPLE'S FUTURES ARE IN LIMBO BASED ON YOUR OFFER FOR COMPENSATION. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.
[00:15:01]
I HOPE I SAY THIS CORRECTLY. AUSTIN CROSS, PLEASE APPROACH THE PODIUM. [APPLAUSE].
>> MEMBERS OF THE BOARD AND OUR NEW SUPERINTENDENT, MY NAME IS AUSTIN CROSS. I AM MY THIRD YEAR AS A TEACHER AT MAYFAIR HIGH SCHOOL. IF YOU COUNT STUDENT TEACHING AND SUBSTITUTE TEACHING THIS IS MY FIFTH YEAR WITH THE BELLFLOWER UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT.
I AM SPEAKING TO YOU NOW BECAUSE I AM THE NEXT GENERATION OF TEACHER. I AM THE ONE WHO WAS HIRED TO REPLACE A RETIRING GENERATION OF TEACHER, THAT OF ONE MRS. ALEX FLETCHER. I MENTION MY GENERATION BECAUSE ON MONDAY DR. DROTTI VISITED MAY FAIR AND HE SAID TO US MY GENERATION CANNOT AFFORD TO BUY A HOUSE, AND HE'S RIGHT.
THE SAD REALITY IS, THAT'S THE ONE THING I ONLY EVER WANTED.
MY SISTER IS A TEACHER AND TEACHES TK IN MORENO VALLEY.
IF I WAS TEACHING OVER THERE, I WOULD BE MAKING $8,000 MORE AND MY RENT EACH MONTH WOULD BE A THOUSAND DOLLARS LESS.
INNING -- INSTEAD, MY RENT JUST WENT UP $200 A MONTH.
THE PAY HAS NOT RISEN TO MEET THAT COST OF LIVING ADJUSTMENT.
I COME TO YOU TODAY TO ASK YOURSELVES WHY IT IS THAT A TEACHER WHO WORKS FOR BELLFLOWER UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT CANNOT AFFORD A HOME IN THE BELLFLOWER UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT.
MORE IMPORTANTLY, WHY IS IT IF I WENT TO ONE OF OUR NEIGHBORS I COULD BE MAKING ANYWHERE BETWEEN 8,000 AND 12,000 MORE WORKING WITH A SIMILAR DEMOGRAPHIC OF STUDENT? WE CLAIM TO BUILD FUTURES HERE. IT'S ALL AROUND US.
WHAT ABOUT MY STAOUT -- MY FUTURE? [APPLAUSE]. I'M NOT DONE YET.
TEED'S -- TODAY'S YOUTH. PLEASE CONSIDER WITH THE NEW GENERATION, MANY OF US HAVE HEARD WHAT IT IS LIKE, THE LONG HOURS, LOW PAY, GRUELING CIRCUMSTANCES AND HOW IT IS ONLY GETTING WORSE. WE ARE NOT GOING TO SIT AROUND AND TAKE IT FOREVER. WE'RE TIRED.
WE'RE POOR, AND WE WANT TO BE FAIRLY COMPENSATED.
THANK YOU [APPLAUSE]. >> ANY OTHER CARDS FOR TODAY?
[2. CLOSED SESSION]
THANK YOU. AT THIS TIME THE BOARD WILL RECESS TO CLOSED SESSION. OPEN SESSION WILL RESUME AT APPROXIMATELY 6:00. THANK YOU.[3. RECONVENE INTO OPEN SESSION/CALL TO ORDER]
>> TONIGHT'S MEETING IS CALLED TO ORDER ALT -- TO ORDER AT 6 P.M. SORRY ABOUT THAT.
IT OPENED AT 4:00 IN OPEN SESSION AND THEN ADJOURNED TO CLOSED SESSION AT 4:21. THANK YOU.
WE WILL NOW RECONVENE THE MEETING IN OPEN SESSION AT 6:01 TOPICS DISCUSSED WERE STUDENT MATTERS, PUBLIC EMPLOYEE DISCIPLINE DISMISSAL RELEASE, PENDING LITIGATION, ANTICIPATED LITIGATION AND LABOR NEGOTIATIONS.
REPLACING PAGES FOR AGENDA ITEMS 10.3.1.2 AND 11.4 ARE ON THE BACK TABLE IS. PUBLIC COMMENT AND AGENDA AND NONAGENDA ITEMS. WE HAVE REQUESTS FOR AGENDA AND NON-AGENDA ITEMS. IF WE CAN HAVE JANICE PARKS TO
THE PODIUM, PLEASE. >> THIS IS THE FIRST TIME EVER M
[00:20:09]
MAYFIELD HIGH SCHOOL. SOME OF MY STUDENTS ARE HERE.I HAVE ALSO BEEN TEACHING ALT M. I STARTED IN 905 AND -- IN 95 AND HOPEFULLY RETIRING IN 2025. I APPRECIATE THERE IS POSITIVITY. AS A MATH TEACHER IT IS ABOUT THE NUMBERS. WHEN I FIRST STARTED TEACHING I JUST WANTED TO TEACH. I HAD NO IDEA.
I CAME FROM A PRIVATE SCHOOL AND I THOUGHT, OH, I'M MAKING 30,000. OKAY.
I'M GOOD. WHEN YOU SEE OTHER PEOPLE DOING THE SAME JOB ARE MAKING MORE YOU THINK ABOUT WHAT YOU COULD HAVE MADE IN A LIFETIME. I COULD RETIRE SOONER OR TRAVEL.
IT FEELS LIKE BEFORE IT WAS ADVERSARIAL WITH THE DISTRICT, NOW IT IS BECOMING A LITTLE LESS THAN THAT.
I WOULD HOPE YOU WOULD WANT TO FIGHT FOR US TO GET WHAT WE CAN GET AS MUCH AS WE GIVE TO OUR STUDENTS.
THAT'S ALL I HAVE. PLEASE TAKE IT INTO CONSIDERATION. PRETEND I WAS YOUR MOTHER OR YOUR DAUGHTER. I DON'T KNOW.
[APPLAUSE]. >> THANK YOU, MS. PARKS.
COULD WE NOW HAVE COUNCIL WOMAN MARY SENDAJAS COMP TO -- COME TO THE PODIUM. OH.
GOOD EVENING. I'M COUNCIL WOMAN MARY ZENDAJAS IN THE CITY OF LONG BEACH. FOR IDENTIFICATION PURPOSES ONLY. I'M HERE TODAY TO SPEAK IN SUPPORT OF BELLFLOWER UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT FOR MEMBER DR. SUE EL HAS SEN -- SUE ELHESSEN.
I AM DISAPPOINTED OF THIS BOARD DURING THE REORGANIZATIONAL PROCESS OF THIS BOARD. ABLEISM IS A TERM USED TO DESCRIBE DISCRIMINATION AND PREJUDICE AGAINST PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES. ABLEISM CAN TAKE MANY FORMS INCLUDING PHYSICAL BARRIERS AND TKPWHRAOEF -- BELIEFS THAT VIEW PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES AS AN INFERIOR OR LESS THAN VALUABLE.
ABLEISM CONTRIBUTES TO THE MARGINAL -- MARGINALIZATION OF DISABLED PEOPLE IN SOCIETY AND THE WORKPLACE.
AS THE FIRST LATINA WHEELCHAIR PERSON ELECTED TO OFFICE IN THE NATION I UNDERSTAND THE NEED FOR REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS TO EXECUTE THE DUTIES OF PUBLIC OFFICE.
I UNDERSTAND FIRSTHAND THE NEED FOR EQUITY IN ORDER TO UP LIFT THOSE WITH DISABILITIES. NOT ACKNOWLEDGING OR APPLYING GOOD FAITH EFFORTS AND NOT ACCOMMODATING DR. SUE EL HAS -- DR. SUE ELHESSEN'S NEEDS, THE BOARD HAS NOT LIVED UP TO THE EXPECTATION THAT ALL PERSONS SHOULD BE PROVIDED REASONABLE ACCOMMODATIONS. I HOPE THAT YOU WILL PAUSE, REFLECT, REEVALUATE AND CORRECT THIS WRONG BY LOOKING INWARD.
DR. SUE ELHESSEN IS THE FACE OF ALL STUDENTS, INCLUDING THOSE WITH DISABILITIES, AND DESERVES TO BE TREATED FAIRLY AND EQUITABLY. THANK YOU.
NEXT WE HAVE [INAUDIBLE]. [APPLAUSE].
>> GOOD EVENING BOARD OF EDGE, PRESIDENT GARZA, BOARD OF EDUCATION. SUPERINTENDENT.

I AM WILLING TO ENDURE THE STRUGGLE AND HELP BE PART OF THE RECOVERY, BUT NOT ON SALE AT A 20% DISCOUNT. I AM OUTRAGED THAT SOMEONE WHO HAS MY EXPERIENCE AND MY EXPERTISE AND YEARS OF SERVICE AS EARNING $20,000 MORE A YEAR THAN ME.EFFORTS HERE TODAY WILL SHOW YOUR EMPLOYEES YOUR GREATNESS -- YOUR GREAT APPRECIATION FOR THE YEARS OF DEDICATION NOT JUST TEACHERS, BUT EVERY EMPLOYEE TO THE CHILDREN OF BELLFLOWER, LAKEWOOD AND THE CERRITOS COMMUNITY.
LET'S KEEP THE MOMENTUM GOING BY COMPLETING NEGOTIATIONS WITH THE HIGHEST RAISE. DO YOU REALLY WANT YOUR WORKFORCE HERE LIKE THIS TO CONTINUE? WE NEED TO BE AT HOME. WE NEED TO BE RESTED AND WE NEED TO BE PLANNING. I DO APPRECIATE ALL OF YOUR DEDICATION AND THE THINGS YOU HAVE PLANNED FOR I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO. THANK YOU FOR YOUR DEDICATION
AND IT IS GETTING BETTER. >> [APPLAUSE].
>> THANK YOU, MS. FOOT. ANY OTHER CARDS FOR TONIGHT? THANK YOU. DO WE HAVE AMENDMENTS TO THIS
[4. AMENDMENTS TO THE AGENDA]

WE WANTED TO CORRECT THAT ON THE RECORD.

JUSTICE FOR ALL. >> THANK YOU SO MUCH.
AND NOW YOU CAN GO AHEAD AND SIT.
>> ACTUALLY, IF YOU COULD SHARE WITH US ABOUT THE FOSTER
BULLETIN BOARD. >> IN LIGHT OF WHERE WE WENT WITH THE INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE I WANTED TO TAKE A MOMENT TO TALK ABOUT WHAT WE ARE DOING AT STEVEN FOSTER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.
WHAT WE HAVE HERE CHARGED UP BY PBIS.
THIS IS WHAT WE HAVE IS POSSIBL, INTERVENTION AND SUPPORT.
IT IS MORE THAN POSITIVE BEHAVIOR.
IT IS ABOUT THE CULTURE OF THE SCHOOL.

THANK YOU FOR LISTENING AND HAVE A WONDERFUL WEEK.
[APPLAUSE]. >> THANK YOU SO MUCH, MR. MOORE.
THANK YOU SAOEFP OF -- EACH OF YOU.
YOUR REPORTS WERE VERY WELL DONE.
AND WE ARE MAKING SURE WE ARE ALWAYS CONNECTED TO YOU AND SEEING WHAT IS GOING ON IN OUR SCHOOLS.
AT THIS TIME I WOULD LIKE FOR YOU TO REMAIN FOR THE BALANCE OF THE MEETING, BUT I RECOGNIZE THAT YOU MAY HAVE SOME OTHER
[00:45:02]
ACADEMIC OBLIGATIONS YOU NEED TO ATTEND, SO YOU ARE FREE TO LEAVE AT THIS TIME. THANK YOU SO MUCH.[8. PRESENTATIONS FROM STUDENTS / STAFF / COMMUNITY]
WE DO NOT HAVE RECOGNITIONS TONIGHT.IT IS TIME FOR PRESENTATIONS. >> YES.
WE HAVE THREE PRESENTATIONS TONIGHT.
THE FIRST IS MORE -- I'M GONNA TALK ABOUT THE THEORY OF ACTION THAT I HAVE TALKED TO YOU ALL ABOUT, BUT I WANTED TO REVISIT THE WHOLE CONCEPT BECAUSE IT TIES INTO SOME OF THE AGENDA ITEMS FOR TONIGHT FOR APPROVAL WITH SOME CONTRACTS THAT I NEED TO EXPLAIN WHY THOSE CONTRACTS. THIS WILL ALLOW ME A CHANCE TO DO THAT. AND I AM GLAD THE STAFF IS HERE TOO SO THEY CAN START HEARING FROM ME ABOUT SOME OF THIS.
THEY WILL HEAR MORE FROM ME, BUT THIS IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR YOU TO HEAR THAT AS WELL. THE OTHER PIECE WE WILL TALK ABOUT IS BYLAW 6005 AND THEN LASTLY WE HAVE A PRESENTATION FROM MRS. AZAVITO THAT WILL TALK ABOUT CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION IN THE DISTRICT. WITH THAT I WANT TO TALK ABOUT THE APPROACH THAT I WILL TAKE US THROUGH AND I HOPE ALL OF US BUY INTO BECAUSE I THINK IT WILL TAKE ALL OF US TO MAKE THIS PLACE SPECIAL. I FULLY BELIEVE THAT.
THERE ARE EXTRAORDINARY ACHIEVEMENTS FOR ALL STUDENTS ON ADDRESSING THE EDUCATION GAP. I PUT THAT UP THERE BECAUSE SO OFTENTIMES WE FOCUS ON ACHIEVEMENT GAP AND THINGS LIKE THAT. THOSE ARE OBVIOUSLY IMPORTANT, BUT MY BELIEF IS A LOT OF THE ISSUES IN THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP HAS TO DO WITH LACK OF ENGAGEMENT OR LACK THERE OF.
THAT COULD BE -- CURRICULUM COULD BE INCREASED TO ADJUST ENGAGEMENT. IF WE FOCUS ON THAT AND WE ACTUALLY KEEP THE RIGOR HIGH, THE ACHIEVEMENT WILL OCCUR.
YOU WILL HEAR FROM ME HOW THE STUDENTS ARE ENGAGING AND IS THERE A LACK OF ENGAGEMENT. MORE ON COME ON THAT.
LET ME FIRST START OFF WITH THIS SLIDE I USE EVERYWHERE I GO.
IT SPEAKS TO THE IMPORTANCE OF WHO WE ARE AS EDGE -- EDUCATORS.
I AM VERY, VERY PROUD TO BE AN EDUCATOR, AND I'M SURE YOU ARE AS WELL. I HEARD FROM YOU TONIGHT.
WE DO HAVE AN IMPORTANT WORK TO DO.
THERE IS A GENTLEMAN BY THE NAME OF MICHAEL FULLEN I FOLLOW, AND HE IS A MENTOR OF MINE. HE TALKS ABOUT TRANSFORMING EDUCATION IS ONE OF THE % SIGNATURE SIGNS OF OUR TIME.
HE TALKS ABOUT THE COMPLICATED WORLD OUR CHILDREN ARE ABOUT TTY LIVING IN. IT IS NOT GOING TO GET EASIER.
THERE IS A LOT OF RESEARCH THAT SUGGESTS THAT THERE ISN'T A SELF-CORRECTION WHERE WE ARE HEADED, THEN IT COULD BE CATASTROPHIC. WE ARE DEALING WITH CLIMATE CHANGE, THE ECONOMIC DIVIDE BETWEEN THE HAVES AND THE HAVE NOTES. A -- WHEN I LOOK AT SITES THERE IS THE CHALLENGE BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT GENERATIONS, THE COMPETING INTEREST VERSUS THE COMMON INTEREST THAT WE ALL WANT TO BUY HOMES. IN ORDER TO BUY A HOME HERE, OUR GEN-Z, GEN-Y CAN'T DO IT BECAUSE OF THE STATE OF THINGS IN THE UNITED STATES. GENERATIONS HAVE TO DO WITH THAT. IF YOU ARE A GEN-Y YOU WANT TO BUY A HOME AND NEXT TO A BABY BOOMER, YOU WILL PAY A LOT MORE TAXES THAN THAT BABY BOOMER WHO OWNS THE HOME.
IS THE BABY BOOMER GOING TO CHANGE HIS MIND? HECK NO. DO YOU AS A PERSON WANT TO 8 A LOWER TAXES? THERE GOES THE CONFLICT.
THERE IS ALL KINDS OF STUFF WE ARE DEALING WITH AND HERE IS AN EXAMPLE OF SOME OF THE CHALLENGES OUR CHILDREN ARE ABOUT TO FACE. TO ME THIS IS ABOUT WHO CAN HELP FIX THIS. WHO CAN ADDRESS THE CHALLENGES THAT OUR CHILDREN ARE ABOUT TO FACE AND WE ARE FACING RIGHT NOW. THE ONLY AGENCY I CAN SEE THAT CAN CORRECT THAT IS EDUCATION. IT IS UNDER ATTACK RIGHT NOW.
I DON'T KNOW IF YOU ARE WATCHING IT.
THERE ARE A BUNCH OF PEOPLE OUT THERE -- I HAPPEN TO COME FROM SANTA MONICA AND MALIBU AND I KNOW THESE COMPANIES ARE COMING IN ON THEIR IDEAS ON HOW TO EDUCATE STUDENTS OUTSIDE THE PUBLIC EDUCATION SYSTEM. THEY ARE SAYING GOOGLE, WE CAN DO A BETTER JOB THAN THE SCHOOL SYSTEM.
[00:50:01]
SNAPCHAT, WE CAN DO A BETTER JOB.NO. WITH THE INTRODUCTION WITH AI, IT IS GOING TO MAKE THINGS MORE COMPLICATED.
I USE THIS TO TRY TO INSPIRE US TO CONTINUE TO DEMONSTRATE WHO WE ARE BECAUSE THERE IS NOTHING PEOPLE CAN DO TO CORRECT THIS OTHER THAN US. WE HAVE TO UNDERSTAND WHAT IS COMING OUR WAY. WE CAN'T BE JUST LIKE BLOCKBUSTER. REMEMBER THEM? THEY WERE THERE ONE NIGHT AND WE WILL JUST DO CD'S AND TAPES AND NOT UNDERSTANDING WHAT IS COMING DOWN WITH TECHNOLOGY AND STREAMING. THEY WERE GONE OVER NIGHT.
WE CAN BE THE SAME WAY IF WE ARE NOT CAREFUL.
I USE THIS AS A WAY TO SAY WE ARE SPECIAL.
THE WORLD NEEDS US. WE NEED TO EMBRACE THAT AND UNDERSTAND THAT AND WORK TOGETHER.
WHILE WE ARE TEACHING IN THE ACADEMIC SCHOOL AND EVERYTHING ELSE WE WANT STUDENTS TO BE SUCCESSFUL WITH, WE NEED TO BRING THE WORLD TO THEM TO UNPACK AND UNDERSTAND SO THEY CAN DEVELOP THOUGHT AND CREATIVE WAYS OF INVOLVE -- OF SOLVING IT AND WE CAN FACILITATE THAT FOR THEM.
AND WHEN WE DO THAT AND WHEN WE BRING THE WORLD TO THE STUDENTS, THEN A LOT OF THINGS HAPPEN. IT INCREASES THE SELF AND OTHER EXPECTATION FOR MORE LEARNING AND ACHIEVEMENT BY PROVIDING A PROCESS FOR THIS. IF YOU APPROACH THINGS IN A PROJECT-BASED LEARNING WAY, YOU BRING THE WORLD TO STUDENTS AND IT INCREASES THROUGH ENGAGEMENT AND LEARNING THROUGH PERSONALIZATION AND OWNERSHIP. WHEN YOU BRING THE WORLD TO THE STUDENTS IT CONNECTS STUDENTS TO A REAL WORLD WHICH IS OFTEN MORE REFLECTIVE OF THEIR REALITIES THAT THEY LIVE WITH, PARTICULARLY FOR STUDENTS IN DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS.
THEY DON'T SEE THE CURRICULUM REPRESENTING THEM.
IF YOU BRING THE WORLD TO THEM, THEY HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO ENGAGE IN THAT. THERE IS ALL KINDS OF -- IT BUILDS SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, SELF-CONFIDENCE, SELF-EFFICACY.
I WON'T READ THROUGH THEM, BUT DEEPENS HUMAN DESIRE TO CONNECT WITH OTHERS. WE HAVE THE ABILITY TO BRING THIS TO STUDENTS. WE HAVE FULL CONTROL OVER IT.
WE HAVE TO. MY THEORY OF ACTION IS A THREE-PRONG APPROACH. HERE WE TALK ABOUT ESTABLISH -- ESTABLISHING A CULTURE OF SHARED ACCOUNTABILITY THROUGH A SYSTEM OF APPROACH. AND BELIEVE IN TEACHING CROSS-CULTURAL AND SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL SKILLS.
AND LASTLY WE HAVE TO ENGAGE IN CONSTANT REFLECTION IN EVERYTHING WE DO. TONIGHT I WON'T SPEAK TO THE BOTTOM TWO CIRCLES THERE. I WILL TALK TO WHAT IS IN RED WHICH IS ESTABLISHING A SHARED CULTURE OF ACCOUNTABILITY.
THERE IS A PROCESS FOR THAT, TO GET THERE.
I WILL DEMONSTRATE WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE.
THIS IS AN IMPORTANT SLIDE AND SPEAKS TO HOW WE MUST OPERATE AS A SYSTEM. THERE ISN'T A SINGLE PERSON THAT HAS THE ANSWERS. SERIOUSLY.
THE BOARD MEMBERS SITTING UP HERE DON'T BY THEMSELVES.
COLLECTIVELY WE DO. COLLECTIVELY WE DO.
AND THIS IS TALKING ABOUT -- THIS SLIDE HERE TALKS ABOUT -- THIS IS FROM A RESEARCHER THAT HAS DONE A LOT OF WORK AND HE TALKS ABOUT THE GREATEST STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT AND PROGRESSION IN LEARNING IS HAVING HIGHLY EXPERT , INSPIRED AND PASSIONATE TEACHERS AND SCHOOL LEADERS WORKING TOGETHER TO MAXIMIZE THEIR TEACHING. IT SAYS WORKING TOGETHER.
THERE IS A ROLE FOR THE SCHOOL LEADERS TO HARNESS THEIR EXPERTISE IN THE SCHOOLS AND LEAD SUCCESSFUL TRANSPORTATION -- TRANSFORMATIONS, AND THERE IS A ROLE FOR THE SYSTEM TO PROVIDE A SET TIME AND RESOURCES FOR THIS TO HAPPEN. YOU PUT ALL OF THIS TOGETHER, WORKING IN CONCERT IS THE KEY. THAT IS NOT THAT EASY.
IT IS NOT THAT EASY TO GET PEOPLE TO COMMIT TO COMMON EXPECTATIONS AND SO ON. I KNOW SOME PEOPLE SAY, WE ALREADY DO THIS. THE QUESTION I ASK PEOPLE IS DO WE ALL HAVE COMMON GREETING PRACTICES THAT WE UTILIZE? IF WE DON'T, THEN WE ARE NOT WORKING TOGETHER.
WHY IS THAT IMPORTANT? THAT SPEAKS TO THE EXPECTATIONS EACH OF US HAS FOR THE KIDS IN OUR CLASSES.
IF THREE OF US ARE ENGLISH TEACHERS AND THE WAY I GRADE ESSAYS IS DIFFERENT TPR-PB -- THAN MY PEERS, THERE ARE 25, 30 STUDENTS IN MY CLASS THAT WILL HAVE DIFFERENT EXPECTATIONS BY THE TIME THEY LEAVE MY CLASS VERSUS THEIRS.
[00:55:03]
THE HARDEST PART IS OUR KIDS ARE ABOUT TO GO TO ANOTHER GRADE LEVEL WHERE THE OTHER TEACHERS ARE EXPECTING EVERYBODY IS COMING IN WITH THE SAME KNOWLEDGE.IF WE DIDN'T HAVE THE CONVERSATION TO HAVE CLARITY AROUND THE LEARNING EXPECTATIONS AND HAVE A GRADING PACKAGE THAT IS THE SAME, THERE IS NO WAY -- AND THE ONLY WAY TO ENCOURAGE IS WE SIT DOWN AND COMMUNICATE ON A REGULAR BASIS.
THAT'S THE ONLY WAY IT WILL WORK.
WE ALL HAVE 25 TO 30 KIDS IN OUR CLASSES AND THAT'S 90 KIDS.
THERE IS JUST A LOT TO TALK ABOUT REGARDING THIS.
I ALSO KNOW IT IS NOT THAT EASY GETTING TEACHERS TOGETHER AND SAYING LET'S HAVE A COMMON GREETING PRACTICE.
TRUST ME. I HAVE BEEN THERE AND I KNOW IT.
IT IS AS SIMPLE AS HAVING CLARITY AT MAYFAIR.
DO WE HAVE -- ARE WE CLEAR REGARDING WHAT WE EXPECT OUR STUDENTS TO BE ABLE TO DO BY THE TIME WE LEAVE MAYFAIR HIGH.
IF I WAS TO GO TO ALL 108 TEACHERS THERE, CAN THEY DEMONSTRATE WHAT IT IS THAT WE EXPECT OUR STUDENTS TO BE ABLE TO DO BEFORE THEY GRADUATE. IF ANYBODY SAYS YES, THAT'S GREAT. CHANCES ARE THAT'S NOT THE CASE IN MOST SPACES. IF THEY ARE HERE, WE WILL INVESTIGATE THAT. THE KEY OF THAT WHOLE THING IS THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN GET THERE IS YOU CAN MEET AND TALK AND HAVE CONVERSATIONS AND HAVE CLARITY AROUND WHAT YOU ARE GONNA DO. YOU HAVE TO HAVE A PRACTICE FOR THAT. ANYWAY, THIS IS AN IMPORTANT SLIDE HERE. IT SPEAKS TO A HUGE PART OF MY THEORY OF ACTION. AS WE WORK TOGETHER TO HARNESS AND TO ADDRESS WHAT WE KNOW IS IMPORTANT WHICH IS DELIVERING EDUCATION TO OUR KIDS. WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT IS OPERATING NOT IN SILOS AND DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS, BUT HOW DO WE GET US MOVING IN THE SAME DIRECTION? HOW DO WE GET HERE FROM HERE? WE HAVE FULL CONTROL.
WE GET YOU YOUR EXPECTATIONS AND MAKING SURE THAT WE DON'T -- WHEN WE DON'T GET OUR WAY WE DON'T TAKE OUR MARBLES AND GO HOME. THAT'S WHAT I MEANT BY THAT.
YOU DON'T GET YOUR WAY DOESN'T MEAN YOU TAKE YOUR MARBLES AND GO HOME. YOU UNDERSTAND THAT THERE IS DISAGREEMENT AND WE -- WE ARE MOSTLY INTELLIGENT AND THEN WE COMMIT TO THE GREATER GOOD AND WE MOVE FORWARD ON THAT.
THIS IS FULLY IN OUR CONTROL. HOW DO WE GET THERE? AT MAYFAIR, I THINK THERE ARE 108 TEACHERS.
WE HAVE ALL OF THESE DIFFERENT TEACHERS AND HOW DO WE GET US ON THE SAME PAGE? WE HAVE TO BE ORGANIZED.
YOU HAVE TO BE ORGANIZED. THIS GRAPH HERE IS SOMETHING THAT YOU WILL HEAR A LOT FROM ME IN TERMS OF HOW WE ORGANIZE OURSELVES IN ORDER TO GET THERE. THE TEACHERS TEACH DIFFERENT GRADE LEVELS AND TEACH DIFFERENT SUBJECTS.
HOW DO WE GET THEM IN COMMUNICATION.
IF I WAS AN ENGLISH TEACHER HOW DO WE ENSURE OUR EXPECTATIONS ARE THE SAME WITH RESPECT TO THE ESSAY? THERE HAS TO BE A TIME WE COMMUNICATE WHEN GRADING OUR WORK AND WE NEED TO BE IN TEAMS. IF YOU ARE IN THE SCIENCE DEPARTMENT YOU SHOULD BE IN ONE OF FOUR TEAMS. BIOLOGY, CHEMISTRY, PHYSICS AND YOU FIT IN ONE OF NOSE ROOMS. IN THOSE ROOMS. IN ENGLISH, 9, 10, 1112.
IF YOU ARE IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, YOU ARE IN A CERTAIN GRADE LEVEL. YOU ARE ORGANIZING YOUR TEAMS. AND THERE ARE CONVERSATIONS AND IF YOU HAVE 108 PEOPLE, HOW DO YOU ENGAGE IN THE CONVERSATION? ARE THERE TEAMS THAT CAN COME UP THROUGH WHATEVER SELECTIONS TO BE THE FACILITATOR OF THE MEETINGS AND ENGAGE IN CONSTANT CONVERSATIONS AROUND SCHOOL ISSUES? THEY FORM A SITE LEADERSHIP TEAM YOU HAVE YOUR PRINCIPALS AND YOUR ADMINISTRATORS AND THE PARAPROFESSIONALS AND THE TEACHER LEADERS ENGAGING IN
[01:00:07]
EXPECTATIONS WHERE THEY CAN GO BACK AND FORTH AND ENGAGE IN THE CONVERSATIONS. YOU CAN GET A COMMITMENT BY SCHOOL. WHAT DO I MEAN BY COMMITMENT? IF MAYFAIR SAYS THEY SHOULD LOOK THIS WAY AND YOU ALL AGREE TO IT, THAT'S WHAT IMENT BY HAVING THE COMMITMENT TO SAY, OKAY.AND YOU CAN GO OUT AS A TEAM AND YOU CAN SAY IS IT ONLY THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT'S ISSUE STKPH IS MATH INVOLVED TOO.
IF IT IS, ARE WE GRADING WITH THE SAME RUBERICK? IT HAS TO EXIST. THE WAY THEY DO THAT IS THROUGH THE SITE LEADERSHIP TEAM. TO HAVE 108 PEOPLE HAVING THE CONVERSATION IN THE ROOM, IT MAKES IT DIFFICULT.
YOU HAVE TO KIND OF BE ORGANIZED IN THAT WAY.
THE PRINCIPALS ARE ESSENTIAL HERE IN THAT THEY ARE THE ONES FACILITATING THESE CONVERSATIONS AND MAKING SURE FACILITATING THAT. AND THEN THE DISTRICT THEN SEES WHAT THEY HAVE IN THEIR SUPPORT. THIS IS THE COMMUNICATION STRUCTURE. WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU ARE IN THIS SITUATION? HOW DO YOU GET THROUGH THOSE COMMITMENTS? WITH THIS I AM SAYING THAT EACH SCHOOL IS ESSENTIALLY GOING TO AT SOME POINT GIVEN A FRAMEWORK AND EACH SCHOOL WILL DEVELOP THEIR GAME PLAN THAT SUPPORTS THE DIVISION. THEY WANT TO MAKE SENSE SO WE CAN MOVE FORWARD. I AM GOING TO A NEW SLIDE.
THE TEAM CREATES AND IMPLEMENTS AND THEY ARE THE ONES THAT ESTABLISH THE CLARITY WITH FOCUS AND EXPECTED OUTCOMES AND SUPPORT. THE GOAL IS FOR THAT TEAM AND THEIR SCHOOL TO ESTABLISH THESE THINGS IN THE PROCESS.
WHAT I MEAN BY COMMITMENT IS HAVING A CONSENSUS.
HOLDING EACH OTHER ACCOUNT ACCOUNTABLE -- ACCOUNTABLE FOR FULFILLING THEIR PART OF THE AGREEMENT.
SOMETHING EXISTS -- IS THAT AN IMPOSSIBLE THING TO DO? NO, IT IS NOT. YOU SAY I WANT TO BE A PART OF THE PROBLEM. ANYWAY, I WANT TO ENGAGE AND IF I DON'T GET MY WAY BECAUSE MY RUBERICK DIDN'T MAKE THE CUT, MY OWN PERSONAL RUBERIC DIDN'T MAKE THE CUT IT DOESN'T MEAN I TAKE MY MARBLES AND GO HOME. IT MEANS THE CONSENSUS OF THE GROUP YOU FOLLOW THROUGH ON IT. I THINK WE NEED TO CHECK IN ON WHAT WE ARE DOING ON A WEEKLY AND MONTHLY BASIS HOW STUDENTS ARE DOING. DO WE HAVE THE ABILITY TO PAUSE AT ANY TIME TO ASK THE QUESTION HOW OUR STUDENTS ARE DOING? WE CERTAINLY DO. WE HAVE TO BE ORGANIZED ENOUGH TO ASK THAT QUESTION AND THEN DO THAT.
LASTLY REVIEW QUARTERLY PROGRESS AND SO IF THESE THINGS ARE IN PLACE, THAT'S WHEN YOU REALLY PUSH THE COLLECTIVE WISDOM ON EVERYBODY. IN THERE YOU CAN ENGAGE IN SOME DEEP CONVERSATIONS ABOUT WHY STUDENTS ARE LEARNING AND NOT LEARNING. WE RECOGNIZE THESE TEACHERS ARE HAVING SUCCESS AND THIS ISN'T. WHAT ARE THEY DOING DIFFERENTLY? THERE IS A BUNCH OF THINGS THAT IS GONNA HAPPEN AS YOU PROBLEM SOLVE TOGETHER AND THAT'S WHAT I MEAN BY GIVING THE CHECK -- THE COLLECTIVE WISDOM OF EVERYBODY IN THE ROOM TO PROBLEM SOLVE.
WHAT DO WE MEAN BY QUARTERLY REVIEW? THERE IS A WAY. I PUT THIS HERE TO DEMONSTRATE.
WE HAVE THE ABILITY TO LOOK AT DATA IN A QUARTERLY BASIS TO MAKE ADJUSTMENTS. AND WHEN YOU LOOK UP THERE IT IS QUARTER ONE. IT IS LAG METRICS.
YOU GET A CHANCE TO HEAR THAT A LOT.
THIS IS WHAT I CALL THE AUTOPSY DATA.
AUTOPSY. FOURTH GRADE IS MATRICULATING TO
[01:05:01]
FIFTH GRADE. IN AUGUST WE GET THE RESULTS FOR 4TH GRADE. WE CAN'T DO ANYTHING.THEY ARE GONE. IT IS AN AUTOPSY.
IT IS A DEAD BODY. WE CAN LEARN SOMETHING, BUT WE CAN'T DO ANYTHING. HOW MANY STUDENTS GOT SUSPENDED LAST YEAR AND WHY? HOW MANY STUDENTS WERE IN TROUBLE WITH EXPULSION? HOW MANY DRUG SITUATIONS? WE CAN ESTABLISH THE METRICS OURSELVES AND LOOK AT HOW OUR STUDENTS DID THIS YEAR. I PROPOSE WE ALL PAUSE AND ASK THAT QUESTION AND HAVE THAT CONVERSATION.
AND THEN WE MAKE A PLAN TO PAUSE IN NOVEMBER WHEN WE GET OUR ASSESSMENTS IN PLACE AND ALL THAT TO CHECK TO SEE IF WE ARE MAKING PROGRESS. WE PAUSE AND ASK QUESTIONS.
ARE OUR STUDENTS LEARNING? WE ARE SEEING THE SAME TREND.
MAN, IT SEEMS LIKE WE ARE NOT MAKING PROGRESS.
IS IT OUR PRACTICES BETWEEN AUGUST AND NOVEMBER? WHAT CAN WE ADJUST ALONG THE WAY? AND IF THERE IS AN ADJUSTMENT YOU DO IT.
THEN IN MARCH YOU ASK THE SAME QUESTION AND THEN YOU SAY YOU DEVELOP THE SAME GAME PLAN FOR THE FOLLOWING YEAR AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN AFTER SOME DEEP CONVERSATIONS YOU COME UP WITH A PLAN TO CONTINUE TO MAKE PROGRESS OR MAKE ADJUSTMENTS ALONG THE WAY AND YOU CYCLE OVER SO YOU CAN ENGAGE IN THE CONVERSATION. SO IF YOU ARE TALKING TO SO MANY PEOPLE AND IF YOU ORGANIZE IT CAN GET DONE.
IT IS WITHIN OUR CONTROL. I WILL TAKE YOU THROUGH A CONCEPT HERE IN THE HOPES THAT YOU ARE ALL GOING TO ENGAGE IN.
IT HOW DO WE GET TO COMMITMENTS? HOW DO YOU GET TO COMMON COMMITMENTS? YOU PROCESS IT THROUGH SCHOOL.
WASHINGTON WILL GO THROUGH A PROCESS.
LINDSTROM WILL GO THROUGH A PROCESS AND MAYFAIR AND BELLFLOWER AND SOMERSET. THEY WILL GO THROUGH A PROS -- PROCESS. THE BOARD AND THE DISTRICT ARE GOING TO HAVE DEEP CONVERSATIONS AND LOOK AT DATA AND WE WILL ESTABLISH A VISION FOR THE DISTRICT WE EXPECT TO SEE AS A DISTRICT WHOLE. WE HAVE THAT THEORY AND WE HAVE EXPECTED OUTCOMES WE WANT TO SEE ALONG THE WAY.
IN THAT PROCESS WE CAN GO TO EACH SITE AND SAY, LOOK, WE CAN TELL YOU WHAT TO DO, BUT THAT'S NOT A GOOD IDEA.
IN ORDER TO GET THE FULL BUY IN, WE NEED TO GIVE THE POWER TO THE SITE TO MAKE THE DECISIONS AND IT HAS TO BE HEADED TO THE RIGHT DIRECTION. THE TEACHER AND PRINCIPALS SIT WITH THEIR SITE LEADERSHIP TEAM WHICH IS OUR TEACHERS AND IF IT IS A BIG SCHOOL AND YOU GO THROUGH AND ASK THE QUESTIONS AND YOU SAY WHAT SKILLS DO WE WANT TO DEMONSTRATE? YOU MAY SAY WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO BEHAVE A CERTAIN WAY.
YOU GO THROUGH IT TOGETHER AND THEN YOU ASK THE QUESTION.
IT IS NOT BEING DEVELOPED BY THE DISTRICT.
IT IS NOT BEING DEVELOPED BY ANYBODY ELSE.
THE TEACHER LEADERS AND THE ADMINISTRATION AND YOU ANSWER THOSE QUESTIONS. EVERYBODY AGREES TO THAT.
WHAT INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICE WILL BOTH SUPPORT THE DEVELOPMENT OF THOSE SKILLS? YOU GO THROUGH A PROCESS AND ENGAGE IN THE CONVERSATION AND THEN IDENTIFY.
WE NEED THINKING MAPS. YOU GO THROUGH THE WHOLE AND USE THE COLLECTIVE WISDOM ON THE WHOLE APPROACH.
AND THEN YOU OUTLINE THIS AND GET A COMMITMENT AND SAY ARE WE ON AGREEMENT ON THIS? I DIDN'T GET MY WAY.
OKAY. DON'T TAKE YOUR MARBLES AND THEN
[01:10:03]
GO HOME. WE NEED YOU.YOUR KIDS NEED YOU. FROM THERE WE ASK THE QUESTIONS, WHAT KINDS OF SUPPORT DO YOU NEED? SUPPORTS COULD BE WE DON'T KNOW HOW TO DO THAT.
WE NEED X. WE NEED TO KNOW HOW TO SOLVE FOR THIS. WHATEVER IT IS YOU ARE GOING TO DEMONSTRATE IN TERMS OF TIER1 SUPPORT AND TIER1, 2, AND 3.
IN THAT PROCESS GUESS WHAT YOU DO.
YOU DEVELOP YOUR PROFESSIONAL LEARNING PLAN FOR THE SCHOOL AND HOW YOU ARE GOING TO COORDINATE. AND YOU ARE GOING TO ESTABLISH COMMITMENTS TOGETHER TO DO THAT AND IN THE END THERE ARE MONETARY THINGS. IT IS HOW YOU USE YOUR RESOURCES AND HOW YOU USE YOUR BELL SCHEDULE AND HOW YOU USE YOUR AFTER SCHOOL SUPPORTS. YOU ENLIST ALL OF THAT AND THEN YOU AGREE TOGETHER TO SAY, OKAY, THIS IS THE PROCESS AND WE ARE GOING TO DO IT AND THEN YOU OUTLINE IT AND GET A COMMITMENT AND MOVE ON. THEN YOU ESTABLISH ALONG THE WAY WHAT EVIDENCE -- IF WE ARE GOING TO MAKE PROGRESS, WHAT EVIDENCE ARE WE GOING TO SEE THAT TELLS US THE PROGRESS IS THERE AND YOU OUTLINE IT AND YOU PUT IT IN A TIMELINE IN THE SCHOOL YEAR.
ONCE YOU DO THAT PRINCIPAL COMES TO THE DISTRICT OFFICE AND MYSELF AND EVERYBODY ELSE. THIS IS GOOD.
GO ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS. WE'LL SEE YOU IN A COUPLE OF WEEKS. WE'LL GO TO WORK.
HERE WHAT YOU ARE GO -PB -- GONNA GET ARE THE SITES HAVING DIFFERENT PROFESSIONAL LEARNING PLANS AND DIFFERENT THINGS.
ALL OF THIS HAS TO BE WITHIN A CONFINE.
WE ARE GOING TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT THE SITE IS SAYING THEY NEED. THE THING I AM GONNA ASK IN ALL OF THIS IS COMMITMENT, COMMITMENT, COMMITMENT TO THE THINGS YOU SAID YOU NEED, THE THINGS YOU SAID YOU NEED.
WE ARE INVOLVED AND WE ARE CLOSER TO YOU AND IN SUPPORTING YOU. THE WAY I LOOK AT IT IS YOU ARE GOING TO WORK HARD AND TRY TO FULFILL THIS AND THEN RUN INTO FRUSTRATIONS AS A SCHOOL AND A STAFF ON SOME ISSUE.
I SAID A LOT. WE GOT A NEW MIC.
THE WHOLE GOAL IS TO GET TO A PLACE WHERE WE ARE ALL -- WHERE WE ARE ALL OPERATING TOGETHER WITH THIS.
AND WHEN YOU LOOK AT LIVE MATRIX YOU ARE GOING TO LOOK AT YOUR DATA, BUT YOUR SCHOOLS MAY HAVE DIFFERENT APPROACHES IN HOW THEY GOT THAT DATA. HOW POWERFUL IS THAT WHERE WE SEE A SCHOOL JUST ALL OF A SUDDEN DO SOMETHING.
THEN ANOTHER SCHOOL, OH, GOD, WHAT DID YOU GUYS DO TO IMPROVE LIKE THIS BASED ON THE SAME METRICS WE ARE LOOKING AT? OUR APPROACH IS, OKAY, MAYBE THAT IS SOMETHING WE CAN LOOK INTO. YOU CONTINUE TO LOOK INTO IT AND THE KEY IS ABOUT THE BUY IN. I GET IT AND THERE IS FRUSTRATION AND I AM HOPING TO ADDRESS THAT. MY HOPE IS TO ALWAYS MAKE SURE THAT PEOPLE FEEL VALUED. WE DO VALUE EVERYBODY.
AND THAT OBVIOUSLY COMES WITH MONETARY SUPPORT AND THINGS LIKE THAT. AT THE END OF THE DAY WE ARE ALL HERE TO SOLVE THIS. IF WE CAN GET THE SYSTEM IN PLACE AND WE CAN START INTRODUCING -- I GUARANTEE YOU THERE WILL BE INSTANCES WHERE YOU WILL BE SAYING, MY GOD, NOVEMBER, DECEMBER, THESE PARTICULAR STUDENTS ARE CONTINUING TO STRUGGLE. WHAT IS STOPPING THEM? YOU WILL KEEP ASKING PEOPLE QUESTIONS.
IF IT IS A CERTAIN TREND THAT YOU SEE IN A CERTAIN GENDER OF
[01:15:03]
STUDENTS OR CLASS OF STUDENTS OR RACE OF STUDENTS, YOU WILL ASK THAT QUESTION. WHY ARE THESE PARTICULAR STUDENTS NOT BEING SUCCESSFUL, AND LET'S DIG DEEPER INSTEAD OF JUST IGNORING IT AND POSSIBLY THINKING ABOUT IT AS A LIVE METRIC, WE WANT TO SAY WE WILL MAKE ADJUST -- ADJUSTMENTS FOR THAT TO OCCUR. THAT'S WHAT WE NEED TO GET TO.AND THEN IN THERE WHEN YOU RUN INTO THE FRUSTRATION THAT'S WHEN THE CONCEPT OF, MAN, SOMEBODY -- I REMEMBER THIS PROCESS AND THIS IS NOT KNOCKING ON ROMEO AND JULIETTE.
IT IS A GREAT BOOK. I HAD A TEACHER THAT EXPLAINED THE DRAMA BEHIND IT, BUT I REMEMBER AT CLOVIS WEST, WE WERE STUCK AND A LOT OF THE AFRICAN-AMERICAN STUDENTS WERE STRUGGLING. WE APOLOGIZED AND SAID WHAT IS HAPPENING. I PULLED THEM IN AND I SAID WE SEE THE TREND. WHAT IS ALL OF THIS THOU, THEY AND WHAT ARE THEY TEACHING? WHY THE GUY USE THIS BOOK? HE CAN USE ANOTHER BOOK. I WENT TO TEACH THEM AND SAID THIS IS WHAT THE STUDENTS THINK ABOUT THE CURRICULUM.
MAYBE WE NEED TO -- THEY WANT TO LEARN, BUT THE STUFF WE PUT IN FRONT OF THEM IS DISCONNECTED AND THEY DON'T SEE THE CONNECTION. THEY DON'T SEE THE SENSE BEHIND IT. IF WE ARE TRYING TO DO X, WHY DON'T WE USE THIS OTHER CURRICULUM THAT IS MORE IN LINE TO WHAT THEY -- WHAT THEY UNDERSTAND THE CONTEXT OF THEIR UNDERSTANDING AND THEN WE GO THERE.
YOU WILL FIND NUGGETS. AT ANY RATE, I AM TALKING A LOT.
I THINK THIS PLACE CAN BE SPECIAL.
I THINK -- I WANT TO DEMONSTRATE THAT THIS PLACE CAN BE ONE OF THE BEST DISTRICTS IN THE COUNTY AND POSSIBLY IN THE STATE.
I THINK YOU HAVE GOOD BONES. YOU HAVE GOOD UNIVERSITIES AROUND YOU. YOU HAVE PASSIONATE PEOPLE.
YOU HAVE A LOT OF LOCAL UNIVERSITIES.
YOU HAVE INDUSTRY. WE ARE IN L.A.
WE CAN ALWAYS CALL SNAPCHAT OR OTHER AGENCIES TO HELP BRING THE WORLD TO OUR STUDENTS. THERE'S A LOT OF THINGS WE CAN DO TOGETHER. NONE OF THAT WILL WORK IF WE DON'T WORK TOGETHER. IT WILL BE PIECEMEAL AND ARROWS GOING IN OTHER DIRECTION. WITH THAT I WILL STOP HERE.
THE REASON I BROUGHT THIS UP IS THE TPAU SILL STATION OF THIS CON SRER -- TPAU SILL STATION OF THIS CONVERSATION IS NOT EASY.
THERE IS A LOT OF CULTURAL TRUST AND IT HAS TO BE A METHODICAL PROCESS. AND I HAVE FACILITATORS AND I HAVE CONTRACTS THAT WILL HELP US AND THAT'S WHAT I WANT TO TALK ABOUT BEFORE I BLINDLY GIVE UH CONTRACT.
THE OTHER GROUP -- I TOLD THE COMMUNITY THAT I WANTED TO GO A A LISTENING TOUR AND LISTEN TO EVERYBODY AND THEN DEPOSIT SOME IDEAS WHILE I'M OUT THERE TALKING TO PEOPLE, ENOUGH FOR ME TO FORMULATE A GAME PLAN TO MOVE FORWARD WITH WHERE WE SHOULD HEAD. I THINK IN THERE I WILL ASK QUESTIONS LIKE, OKAY -- ALL RIGHT, DO WE WANT OUR STUDENTS TO HAVE INTERNSHIPS BEFORE THEY GRADUATE? IS THAT SOMETHING OF INTEREST OF OURS? HOW DO WE WANT TO DO THE IMMERSION PROGRAM? YOU NAME IT. ON TOP OF THAT, WHAT IS WORKING AND WHAT IS NOT WORKING AND REALLY GATHERING ALL OF THAT AND THEN COMING MAY, TELL THE BOARD I THINK THIS IS WHERE I WANT TO GO WITH THINGS. WHILE IN THE MEANTIME THE OTHER GROUP WORKING WITH OUR STAFF WILL GET THEM WORK -- GET THEM ORGANIZED IN A WAY WE WILL GO ABOUT OUR BUSINESS THERE.
I WILL STOP THERE. >> I JUST HAD A COMMENT.
I JUST WANT TO THANK YOU FOR ALL OF THE COLLABORATION BECAUSE I DO THINK THAT IS THE KEY TO THE SUCCESS OF ANY ORGANIZATION.
I LOVE WHAT YOU'RE DOING AS FAR AS COLLABORATING AND TALKING WITH OUR EMPLOYEES AND OUR STUDENTS AND OUR FAMILIES.
I APPRECIATE THAT. >> I HAVE A QUICK QUESTION ABOUT YOUR TIMELINE IN THE MODEL. ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT THE TIMELINE FOR PRINCIPALS TO IDENTIFY SPECIFIC PERFORMANCES AND HOW THEY ARE GONNA ACHIEVE THAT?
>> THIS ACTIVITIES ARE OCCURRING ALREADY I'M POSITIVE.
ALREADY HAS A PLAN MOVING FORWARD.
WHAT I'M SAYING IS I WANT TO GET TO A PLACE WHERE WE REALLY MAKE SURE THAT THE COLLECTIVE WISDOM, EVERYONE IS THE ONE DEVELOPING THIS. THAT'S HOW HOW WE WILL GET
[01:20:02]
THE -- HOW WE WILL GET FULL COMMITMENT FROM STAFF.I DON'T WANT SOMETHING LIKE THIS FILLED OUT -- NOT THAT MY PRINCIPALS ARE DOING THIS. WE ARE LOOKING DEEPER.
THIS COULD BE WRITTEN UP IN A CLAUSE SOMEWHERE AND THE STAFF KNOWS WHAT WE ARE DOING. THAT'S NOT WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR. IT IS NOT EVEN ABOUT THIS PAPER.
IT IS ABOUT THE WORK THAT'S TAKING PLACE.
WE JUST NEED A DOCUMENT TO HELP GUIDE US AS WE ASK THESE QUESTIONS AND GET THROUGH A COMMITMENT.
>> THE TIMELINE STANDS FOR ACCOUNTABILITY?
>> SAY THAT AGAIN. >> THE TIMELINE STANDS FOR ACCOUNTABILITY? YOU MENTIONED THAT IN THE SHARED
THE TIMELINE -- YES. IF YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT THE TIME FRAME HERE IS -- FOR EXAMPLE, IF I WANT -- IF WE ARE GONNA ASK THE QUESTION ABOUT WHEN SHOULD WE PAUSE AND LOOK AT THE METRICS AND PAUSE AND LOOK AT THAT.
YOU ARE ACTUALLY GONNA SCAFFOLD TO A YEAR WHEN YOU WILL PAUSE AND ASK QUESTIONS THAT HAS TO BE DEMONSTRATING A TIMELINE.
I THINK THAT'S WHAT YOU ARE ASKING.
RIGHT? >> WELL, IF YOU ARE LOOKING AT MEASURING PERFORMANCE AND YOU ARE DEVELOPING A TIMELINE, THE TIMELINE IS GOING TO BE A BENCH -- BENCHMARK FOR AN UH -- ACHIEVEMENT OF THE GOALS. WHEN YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT ACCOUNTABILITY, LIKE YOU ARE GIVING AN EXAMPLE, WHERE IN THE TIMELINE DO WE NEED TO LOOK AT EXTENDING, REVISING OR ELIMINATING SOMETHING? THAT'S WHAT I WAS THINKING.
IS THAT WHAT YOU MEAN BY THAT? >> GOT IT.
GOT IT. THE WAY I WOULD DO IT, I WOULD APPROACH IT THIS WAY. WE HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THAT WE ARE A LEARNING ORGANIZATION AND THAT LEARNING DYNAMIC IS NOT ALWAYS FIXED. THE TIMELINE TO MAKE ADJUSTMENTS ARE GOING TO BE -- WILL BE CREATED AROUND HERE.
WE CAN SAY IN AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER, WHAT ADJUSTMENTS DO WE NEED TO MAKE WITH THE DATA COLLECTED.
IN NOVEMBER YOU WILL HAVE DONE SOME WORK AND MADE COMMITMENTS.
MAYFAIR IS DOING THIS. WHAT IS IT -- WHAT IS IT THAT WE ARE GOING TO LOOK AT IN NOVEMBER THAT SUGGESTS WE ARE MAKING PROGRESS. AND FROM THERE IF THERE ISN'T ANYTHING -- THAT'S WHAT ADJUSTMENTS WOULD TAKE PLACE ALONG THE WAY HERE. AND MORE IMPORTANTLY IF SOME KEY THINGS ARE ESTABLISHED THROUGHOUT THE -- THROUGHOUT WE NEED TO IMPLEMENT GOING FORWARD, WE WILL MAKE SURE THAT'S A PART OF THE WHOLE LCAP PROCESS. IT IS A PROGRESSIVE GROWTH MIND-SET THAT WE WILL TRY TO DO. AND THEN TO TELL ME WHERE -- IF YOU TELL ME, OKAY, WHEN ARE WE GOING TO CLOSE THE ACHIEVEMENT GAP FOR SPECIAL EDUCATION, I WON'T BE ABLE TO GIVE YOU THAT.
IT IS MORE OR LESS HOW CAN WE ENSURE THAT THE GROWTH OF THE STUDENTS IS MAKING THE MARK AND THEN GET TO A PLACE THAT WE ARE PREDICT TIFF. WE HAVE THE ABILITY TO BE PREDICTIVE OF HOW STUDENTS ARE DOING.
IF WE CAN MAKE PREDICTIONS AROUND THIS TIME, WE CAN AT LEAST SAY, OKAY, WE NEED TO PUT THE PEDAL ON THE METAL OR SLOW
DOWN OR WHATEVER. >> SO IN BETWEEN THE -- YOU SAY QUARTER 1 AND QUARTER 2, BETWEEN SEPTEMBER AND NOVEMBER, THAT'S GONNA BE THE TIME WHEN THE SCHOOL SITES ARE GOING TO POSSIBLY BE MEETING -- WE USED TO CALL THEM PLC'S PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES. WHETHER THAT IS WEEKLY JUST TO MAKE SURE THAT THE TEAM IS ON TRACK AND THEN QUARTER 2 COMES AND YOU DO SOME MORE DATA IS IT -- AND YOU EXTRACT AVERAGE, GOOD, BELOW AVERAGE. YOU MAKE ADJUSTMENTS OR CONTINUE ON THE SAME PATH. YOU GO TO QUARTER 3 AND SAME THING, CONTINUE DEVELOPING THE RELATIONSHIPS AND THE PROFESSIONAL LEARNING COMMUNITIES.
IT IS GONNA TAKE A LONGTIME TO GET USED TO THAT.
AND THEN GETTING UP TO QUARTER 4 WHERE WE DO THE LCAP AND CREATE NEW GOALS AND START THE PROCESS OVER AGAIN.
>> AND I DON'T WANT ANYBODY TO THINK IT IS EASY GETTING HERE.
>> IT IS NOT. >> IT IS NOT GOING TO BE EASY.
IT IS GONNA TAKE TIME. WE HAVE TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS AND WE HAVE TO ESTABLISH TEAMS. I AM NOT EVEN SURE IF BE -- IF WE ARE WORK -- ORGANIZING PLC'S RIGHT NOW.
I DON'T KNOW IF THE SITE LEADERSHIP TEAMS -- WE HAVE TO
[01:25:02]
INVESTIGATE ALL OF THAT AND THEN START THE WORK.THERE MAY BE SAYING I AM [EXPLETIVE] OFF AT THE DISTRICT AND TAKING MY MARBLES BACK. DON'T TAKE YOUR MARBLES BACK.
WE NEED YOU. >> I AM EXCITED ABOUT IT.
AND WE WANT CHANGE FOR THE BETTER AND I'M READY FOR IT.
>> THIS SHOULD BE FUN THE PLACES I HAVE BEEN TO WHEN YOU HAVE A GALVANIZED GROUP IT GIVES YOU ENERGY AND CAUSE TO CELEBRATE.
THE BIGGEST THING IS COMMITTING TO EACH OTHER AND THEN COMMITTING TO THE STUDENTS IS WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR.
>> ANYBODY ELSE HAVE A QUESTION? I DO HAVE A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS.
ALONG THESE STOPS -- YES. THANK YOU.
ARE THESE ALIGNED BY ANY CHANCE WITH PROGRESS REPORTS, ACHIEVEMENT REPORTS? WHEN EXACTLY WOULD THOSE FALL
THIS IS USUALLY -- THE PLACES I HAVE BEEN TO, MANY BECAUSE THERE IS ABOUT A 60 TO A 90-DAY BREAK. THAT WAS A CYCLE THAT WE HAD WITH THE BENCHMARKS THAT WE LOOKED AT.
WE CAN CERTAINLY ALIGN TO SOME OF THE PROGRESS REPORTS.
THIS IS THE PLACES I HAVE BEEN THROUGH.
I HAVE TO UNDERSTAND THE CADENCE.
BUT WHATEVER DATE WE WANT THE CYCLE TO HAPPEN.
>> I AM THINKING AS A TEACHER I WANT TO WORK SMARTER NOT HARDER.
IF I AM ALREADY MAKING THE ASSESSMENTS AND WE DECIDE ON THE COMMON ASSESSMENTS FOR THE GRADE LEVEL AND AT MIGHT SITE, WILL THIS ALIGN SO THAT IT MAKES ME -- GIVES ME THE DATA.
>> SO THIS PROCESS WILL START THIS SPRING WITH THE PRINCIPALS AND TALKING TO THEM ABOUT ALL THIS.
EVENTUALLY HAVE THEM SELECT THEIR LEADERSHIP TEAMS AND THEN MEETING WITH CHRIS STEINHOUSER TO ASSESS WHERE THEY ARE.
I THINK WE HAVE TO REMEMBER, WE HAVE TO TAKE PEOPLE -- THERE IS SOMETHING CALLED LEARNING BY DOING.
YOU TRY TO PLAN, PLAN, PLAN. YOU HAVE TO STOP THE PROCESS OF GOING AND THEN YOU EVOLVE FROM THERE.
THINGS ARE EMOTIONAL KWRAOEUT NOW.
EMOTIONAL RIGHT NOW. THEY ARE DOING ASSESSMENTS.
THAT COMING TOGETHER HAS TO OCCUR WHEN WE ARE ENGAGING IN THIS CONVERSATION. SO THE PROCESS WE WILL USE IS TO GET THE PRINCIPAL TO FEEL SUPPORTED AND WITH SOMEBODY FACILITATING -- KIND OF LIKE WHEN CHRIS STEINHOWSER WAS HERE.
WE WERE SITTING THERE AND FACILITATING CONVERSATIONS.
IT LOOKS SIMILAR, BUT WE DID IT FOR THE BOARD WORK AND THIS IS
GOING TO BE FOR THE SITES. >> ANOTHER QUESTION I HAD WAS I LOVE THE SCHOOLS HAVING COMMON ASSESSMENTS THAT THEY DECIDED ON. ALSO I AM LOOKING AHEAD AS A DISTRICT, HOW DO WE THEN GET THOSE TOGETHER?
>> OH, OKAY. >> AND SO THAT THE BOARD GETS THAT INFORMATION AND IS ABLE TO MEASURE HOW OUR SCHOOLS ARE DOING AND WE KEEP THE PULSE ON THAT.
>> I GET WHENNER YOU ARE -- I GET WHERE YOU ARE GOING NOW.
WE ALWAYS WANT TO GIVE THE SITES THE ABILITY TO MAKE DECISIONS ABOUT THE COMMON ASSESSORS. THE THE BIG -- THE BIGGEST THING ARE THE CHECK MARKS. IN SANTA MONICA WRAOE DO -- WE DO STAR READING AND MATH. WE GOAT TO A POINT WHERE -- WE GOT TO A POINT WHERE WE WERE WITHIN 5% OF ACCURACY FOR EXAMPLE THE LAST YEAR THE STAR READING -- THE READING AND MATH THAT THE STUDENTS TOOK IN MAY, RIGHT BEFORE THE STATE ASSESSMENTS, WHEN WE TOOK THAT UH ASSESSMENT AND WHEN WE WENT
[01:30:02]
BACK TO LOOK AT THE LIVE DATA WE WERE WITHIN 95% ACCURACY.THAT TELLS ME THROUGHOUT THE YEAR THE STAR ASSESSMENTS -- WE HAD IT IN -- WE HAD IT AS A -- WHAT DO YOU CALL IT? A SCREENER. THIS IS THE THIRD ONE BEFORE THE STATE ASSESSMENT. ALONG THE WAY WE SAW PROGRESS.
WHEN YOU SEE THAT, THE TEACHER ADJUSTMENT IS NOT THE STAR TEST.
IT IS THEIR LESSON PLAN AND -- THAT PIECE I AM NOT GOING TO SHARE WITH YOU. AT THE END OF THE DAY THEY ALL GONNA COME TO THE SAME RESULTS. SANTA MONICA DID SOMETHING THERE AND THEY LIKE THEIR WRITING ASSESSMENT AND IT TOOK TWO YEARS TO GET TO COMMON WRITING. AND THEY WANT TO INSERT A COMMON WRITING ASSESSMENT THAT THE WHOLE DISTRICT USES WHERE THE TEACHERS GRADE. THAT'S A WHOLE PROCESS.
I LOVED IT. IT TAKES TIME, BUT IT IS A GREAT LEARNING OPPORTUNITY IF WE ARE ABLE TO HAVE COMMON WRITING AND THEN ESTABLISH A RUBERIC WE ALL USE.
BUT IT IS A PROCESS. IT TAKES TIME.
YEAH. THERE WILL BE DISTRICT-WIDE BENCHMARKS AND THEN SIDE BENCHMARKS.
>> THANK YOU. ANY OTHER QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS?
>> AND I WANT TO MAKE SURE, SOME PEOPLE ARE GONNA SAY, OH MY GOD, TESTING AND ALL THAT. WE KNOW THESE ARE -- THESE ASSESSMENTS ARE NOT THE END ALL, BE ALL.
I LOVE -- WHEN WE GET TO A PLACE WHERE WE ARE EXECUTING OUR PROJECTS BASED ON CONCEPTS AND WE HAVE STUDENT EXHIBITIONS AND PORTFOLIOS AND ALL OF THOSE THINGS, WE ARE GONNA GET THERE.
IT DOESN'T MEAN WE DON'T HAVE THE BENCHMARKS.
WE STILL NEED THEM THERE KNOWING IT IS A SMALL PIECE OF THE OVERALL. IT IS GONNA TAKE TIME TO DEVELOP THE METRICS. IF IT IS FOUR OR FIVE YEARS FROM NOW, I WOULD LOVE TO SEE STUDENT EXHIBITION WORK AND THINGS LIKE THAT. WE HAVE TO TAKE OUR TIME TO GET
>> ALL RIGHT. ANY OTHER KWEU -- QUESTIONS? ARE WE GOOD? THANK YOU.
>> THE NEXT ITEM WE HAVE -- THE NEXT ITEM WE HAVE IS BYLAW6005.
I BELIEVE YOU ALL HAVE A COPY OF THE ON BYLAW.
THIS IS A BYLAW YOU HAVE SEEN ALREADY AND ON AN INDIVIDUAL BASIS I TOLD YOU TO LOOK AT IT. THIS IS WHAT WE CONSIDER A FIRST READING. IT IS A FIRST READING OF IT.
THIS IS MORE OR LESS YOU GUYS AGREEING, HAVING CONSENSUS AND NOT A VOTE, BUT A CONSENSUS TO SAY WE ARE GOOD WITH THIS AND NOT GOOD WITH THIS AND MAKING ADJUSTMENTS.
ONCE WE AGREE ON IT, I WILL BRING IT FOR -- UNDER CONSENT FOR THE NEXT BOARD MEETING. TODAY IS THE FIRST MEETING AND THERE IS MORE WORK TO BE DONE. WE CAN BRING IT BACK FOR MORE DISCUSSIONS NEXT TIME AROUND, BUT THIS IS JUST A FIRST READING. WITH THAT I WILL LET YOU TAKE TURNS AND DELIBERATE AND GIVE AN OPINION AND WHAT YOUR THOUGHTS
ARE ON THE BYLAWS. >> ANY COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS? I PERSONALLY LIKE HOW YOU CLEANED UP SOME OF THE LANGUAGE. IT WAS A LITTLE COCHISE IN SOME
OF THE AREAS. >> I THINK THIS STARTED AWHILE AGO, BUT WHAT WAS THE ORIGINAL CONCERN WITH THE BYLAW TO BEGIN WITH? WHAT WERE WRAOE CLEANING UP?
>> THERE WERE THE INTEREST OF SOME OF THE BOARD MEMBER THAT'S WANTED ME TO BRING THIS. I THINK IT WAS MORE OR LESS -- YOU GUYS WENT THROUGH SOME HARD -- THE WHOLE COUNTRY WENT THROUGH A HARD LAST TWO YEARS OF ELECTIONS AND THINGS LIKE THAT.
I KNOW A LOT OF SCHOOL DISTRICTS ARE NOW WAPLTING -- WANTING TO MAKE SURE THE CONDUCT OF THE BOARD AND THE COMMUNITY IS
[01:35:02]
STREAM LINED AND CIVIL. THE BEST WAY TO DO THAT IS TO HAVE BYLAWS TO GUIDE US. SO CSDA BECAUSE OF ALL OF THIS MADE RECOMMENDATIONS THAT WE NEED TO INCLUDE.SO WHAT YOU SEE, THAT'S NEW THERE.
INSTEAD OF MAKING THINGS UP, WE FIGURE EVERY DISTRICT IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA IS PROBABLY DEALING WITH THE SAME THING AND SO THAT'S WHY THEY CAME UP WITH ADJUSTMENTS.
>> IT ALL SEEMS VERY STRAIGHT FORWARD TO ME.
IS THE BOARD COMFORTABLE WITH IT?
>> YEAH. SO WE WENT OVER THIS A LONGTIME AGO. AND THEN IT WENT AWAY FOR A FEW MONTHS, AND NOW IT IS BACK. I -- IS THIS ON? SOMETHING THAT IS RETURNING IS THE POINT THAT -- THE LAST BULLET POINT I ADDED THAT READS PRACTICE ACCOUNTABLE SPEAKING DURING BOARD MEETINGS TO ENSURE ALL CONVERSATIONS ARE PRODUCTIVE AND EFFICIENT. I JUST WANT TO -- IT GOES ON TO SAY TO RECOGNIZE THE TIME AND ENERGY OF THE PUBLIC AND STAFF, BUT I REMEMBER REVISITING WHAT I HAD REQUESTED TO BE ADDED TO THIS, I FELT IT WAS HARD TO GAUGE ACCOUNTABLE SPEAKING AND I ASKED IF IN ANY CIRCUMSTANCE, A VIOLATION OF THESE INDIVIDUAL POINTS COULD BE GROUNDS FOR SENSOR.
WHEN WE FIRST BROUGHT THIS UP, IT WAS WITH A SENSOR POLICY.
I REMEMBER THAT WAS ONE OF MY CONCERNS THAT FOR SOMETHING SO BIG AS ACCOUNTABLE SPEAKING, IT IS MY MISTAKE I USED THAT LANGUAGE, BUT I WAS AFRAID THAT COULD LEAD TO APPROXIMATE DOWN -- PROBLEMS DOWN THE ROAD. I THOUGHT WE HAD SLASHED THAT AND WE HAD DIFFERENT LANGUAGE WHEN WE TOOK A VOTE.
BUT THAT IS WHEN THE ITEM DIED. I WANT TO SEE HOW THE BOARD FEELS ABOUT THAT LAST BULLET POINT TODAY.
>> WELL, ME PERSONALLY, CHRIS, I THOUGHT THAT WAS A VERY EXCELLENT ADDITION. SO ACCOUNTABLE -- AND I HOPE IT IS NOT DIFFICULT TO UNDERSTAND THE INTERPRETATION OF WHAT YOU ARE SAYING WHEN YOU SAY ACCOUNTABLE SPEAKING.
THAT MEANS STAY ON THE SUBJECT. STAY ON THE SUBJECT AND MAKE SURE YOU ARE STUDENT FOCUSED AND NO PERM AGENDA -- PERSONAL AGENDAS AND EGOS GET IN THE WAY. SO ACCOUNTAL -- ACCOUNTABLE SPEAKING, BE RESPECTFUL AND STAY ON TOPIC.
>> I THINK MY CONCERN WAS THOUGH IF AS A BOARD WE GET ALONG PRETTY WELL RIGHT NOW. FURTHER DOWN THE LINE -- [LAUGHTER]. FURTHER DOWN THE LINE IF THERE EXISTS A BOARD THAT IS LESS AMEABLE WITH EACH OTHER, I THINK IT CAN LEAD TO PROBLEMS. IF THE BOARD CAN GANG UP ON ANOTHER BOARD MEMBER SAYING YOU GO OFF ON TOO MANY TANGENTS AND WE ARE GOING TO SENSOR YOU. I DON'T WANT IT TO BE USED INAPPROPRIATELY. I WANTED TO KNOW HOW THE BOARD
FEELS. >> THIS IS AN EXISTING GOVERNING BYLAW. I DON'T KNOW WHY YOU TIE IT TO CENSORSHIP. THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WAS JUST UPDATED BASED ON CSDA GUIDELINES.
>> WHEN IT WAS ORIGINALLY BROUGHT UP IT WAS JOINED.
I THINK I ASKED YOU AT THAT BOARD MEETING IF THIS COULD BE USED, IF THESE GUIDELINES COULD BE USED WHEN CONSIDERING SENSOR.
I THINK THE ANSWER I RECEIVED WAS YES.
THAT'S WHY IT IS A CONCERN TO ME.
>> IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE YOUR ANSWER NOW WHICH IS NO.
IT CANNOT BE TIED TO SENSOR. THIS IS A POLICY ON ITS OWN,
>> SO I WILL ACKNOWLEDGE BOARD MEMBER PRITCHARD -- CRI HFIELD.
>> I THINK YOU ARE RIGHT. I THINK THEY WERE PRESENTED TOGETHER AND THAT WAS A GOOD NOTE YOU MADE, A BULLET POINT, BUT GIVEN THAT IT IS NOT TIED TO SENSOR IT LOOKS GOOD.
>> HAPPY TO HEAR THAT. >> DID YOU WANT TO -- WAS THERE SOMETHING ELSE YOU WANTED TO ADD?
>> I AM IN FULL SUPPORT OF THE POLICY.
IT IS GREAT. >> CAN WE CONFIRM DR. DRATI THAT THIS POLICY AS IT READS NOW IS NOT TIED TO ANY SENSOR POLICY EXISTING PREVIOUSLY OR AT THIS MOMENT, PLEASE?
>> IF -- IT WAS A BOARD BYLAW THAT WAS COMBINED AND IT WAS VERY CONFUSING AND IT SEEMED KIND OF AGGRESSIVE IF I SHOULD SAY AND BECAUSE CENSORSHIP IS SOMETHING AGGRESSIVE, AND WE
[01:40:04]
DON'T WANT TO GET THAT MIXED UP. IF A BOARD MEMBERS NEEDS TO BE SENSORRED, OH MY GOODNESS, WE WILL ALL KNOW.THIS IS A BASIC WAY TO BEHAVE. AND SO WHEN YOU HAVE A NEW BOARD MEMBER TO COME O INSTEAD OF GIVING THEM A THICK BOOK, WE CAN JUST GIVE THEM THIS TO START OFF WITH AND CONTINUE TO EDUCATE OURSELVES AND LEARN MORE AND BE THE BEST BOARD MEMBER WE CAN BE.
CENSORSHIP IS A WHOLE DIFFERENT THING.
THIS IS TO HELP MAKE SURE WE STAY IN A RANGE TO WORK -- WE
CAN WORK TOGETHER. >> I'M HAPPY THE DISTINCTION HAS BEEN MADE AND THAT THIS WON'T -- WELCOME NEWS.
>> I WILL LOOK TO SEE IF THIS IS KEUBGT -- CONNECTED.
IF THERE IS ANOTHER BYLAW FOR CENSORSHIP, I CAN FIND IT.
>> THANK YOU. AND ALSO IF WE CAN CONFIRM THAT CENSORSHIP IS NOT SOMETHING -- NOT THAT WE ARE GOING TO DO THAT NOW OR PLANNING TO IN ANY FUTURE, BUT IT IS STILL AN OPTION. IT IS WHENS DID -- WHEN DOES THE
BOARD DECIDE EXERCISE IT? >> YES.
I HAVE ONLY SEEN IT DONE ONCE WITH ONE OF MY PEERS.
IT WAS GLARING THAT IT NEEDED TO HAPPEN.
NO QUESTION THERE. I WILL DEFINITELY CHECK ON THIS, BUT THE CENSORSHIP STUFF, IT USUALLY -- WHEN YOU SEE THAT KIND OF STUFF, YOU WOULD ALMOST EVEN SEE THAT THE CROWD WANTS THAT -- THE PUBLIC WANTS THAT TOO.
IT IS GLARINGLY CLEAR. I KWEUL -- I WILL CHECK ON THAT.
>> AND IF WE WANTED TO, WE CAN -- CSDA HAS A SEN -- CENSORSHIP BYLAW. LIKE I SAID, IT IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT AND WE CAN BRING IT INTO ONE OF OUR POLICIES IF THE -- IN THE FUTURE IF YOU EVER WANTED TO.
>> CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG, DR- WE DON'T NEED A CENSORSHIP POLICY BECAUSE IF SOMETHING SO EGREGIOUS, IT WOULD BE OBVIOUS THAT CENSORSHIP HAS TO HAPPEN. THAT'S MY UNDERSTANDING, RIGHT?
>> [INAUDIBLE] FOR GUIDANCE AND YOU WILL KNOW THAT RIGHT AWAY.
BASED ON WHAT I AM SEEING HERE, IF THAT'S THE QUESTION, THEN I'M GONNA PUT IT ON CONSENT -- WELL I WILL LET YOU TALK ABOUT IT, BUT I WILL MAKE SURE TO PULL IT NEXT TIME AROUND.
>> AND FOR CLARIFICATION THIS IS AN EXISTING BYLAW.
>> YES. >> THAT WAS OUTDATED SINCE 2013 AND JUST BROUGHT UP TO STANDARD BASED ON GUIDELINES.
I WANT TO MAKE SURE EVERYONE HAS CLARITY ON THAT.
>> YES. >> THANK YOU, DR. DRATI.
>> LET ME JUST, TO SUMMARIZE, I AM GOING TO CHECK IN ON THE QUESTION ABOUT CENSORSHIP. IF WE FIND THAT THERE ISN'T ANYTHING THERE, I WILL INCLUDE IT IN CONSENT NEXT TIME AROUND.
IF THERE IS SOMETHING OF INTEREST, WE WILL PULL IT AND ENGAGE IN ANOTHER CONVERSATION. OKAY? THE NEXT ITEM UP, I'M GONNA BRING UP MS. BONNIE HOLDEN.
>> WE ARE HAPPY TO INTRODUCE WITH US TODAY ELISA AZEVEDO, THE CEO OF CAL APS. SHE HAS PEOPLE HERE AS WELL AND SHE WILL GIVE US AN UPDATE ON THE CURRENT TECHNICAL EDUCATION PROGRAM. [APPLAUSE].
>> GOOD EVENING PRESIDENT, BOARD MEMBERS AND SUPERINTENDENT AND CABINET AS WELL AS STAFF AND GUESTS IN THE AUDIENCE.
GOOD EVENING AND THANK YOU FOR ALLOWING ME TO COME AND PROVIDE YOU AN UPDATE ON ALL OF THE CAREER TECH ED PROGRAMS OFFERED TO OUR STUDENTS IN BELLFLOWER UNIFIED.
VERY BRIEFLY WHEN WE TALK ABOUT CAREER TECH ED PROGRAMS WE ARE LOOKING AT COURSES SPECIFICALLY PROVIDING OUR STUDENTS EDUCATION- -- EDUCATION RELATED TO CAREER.
WE ARE LOOKING FOR CLASSES THAT PROVIDE HANDS ON SKILLS.
WE ARE LOOKING FOR INDUSTRY-ALIGNED MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENT IN THE CLASSROOM. LOOKING FOR AC A THROUGH G
[01:45:03]
APPROVAL AND CERTIFICATE COURSES AND WHETHER IT IS ARTICULATE WITH CAREER AND COMMUNITY COLLEGES.WHEN WE TALK ABOUT KAU -- CAREER TECH AREAS WE ARE LOOKING AT BUSINESS SEBG -- SECTORS. IN THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA THERE ARE 15 LARGE AREAS AND IN BELLFLOWER WE OFFER 13 OF THE 15 AREAS. YOU CAN SEE HIGHLIGHT FED BLUE TWO AREAS WE DO NOT HAVE CLASSES IN.
THAT'S THE AG AREA AND THE ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT AREA.
WITHIN THOSE THERE ARE 58 PATHWAYS THAT STUDENTS CAN PARTICIPATE IN. A PATHWAY BASICALLY IS A SERIES OF COURSES, AT LEAST TWO COURSES.
TYPICALLY WE ARE LOOKING AT 300 HOURS OF INSTRUCTIONS.
IT IS TWO FULL YEARS OF INSTRUCTION IN THE SAME CONTENT AREA. THERE ARE LOTS OF PATHWAYS THEY CAN TAKE AND WE WILL TALK ABOUT WHAT THEY ARE IN A MOMENT.
I KNOW THIS PARTICULAR SLIDE IS FAIRLY HARD TO READ.
IT IS PRETTY SMALL SO PLEASE NOTE ON THE TOP IT GIVES YOU THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF ED WEBSITE AND YOU CAN ACCESS THAT AT ANOTHER DATE AND TIME TO LOOK AT MORE SPECIFICALLY.
WHY IS CAREER TECH ED SO IMPORTANT? IT FALLS IN WITH WHAT DR. DRATI WAS TALKING ABOUT.
WHAT IS THE GOAL FOR THE STUDENTS? WHEN THEY LEAVE THE CLASSROOM, WHAT DO WE EXPECT THEM TO BE ABLE TO DO? WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THEY ARE COLLEGE AND CAREER PREPARED. WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THEY HAVE OPPORTUNITIES TO DO EITHER OR BOTH.
KA -- CAREER TECH ED IS IMPORTANT TO PREPARE FOR LIFE BEYOND THE CLASSROOM. WE WANT TO CONTINUE WITH TKEUBL -- ADDITIONAL EDUCATION. ONE OF THE WAYS THEY REPORT THEIR EFFECTIVELY --Y PHYSICAL TIFFNESS -- EFFECTIVENESS IS BY LOOKING AT THE CALIFORNIA SCHOOL DASHBOARD, SPECIFICALLY ON THE COLLEGE AND CAREER INDICATORS. WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR IS A SLIDE THAT SHOWS THE COLLEGE AND CAREER INDICATOR FOR THAT DASHBOARD. GRADUATES CLASSIFIED AS PREPARED ARE MORE LIKELY TO BE SUCCESSFUL WHEN THEY GRADUATE.
SO THIS SLIDE IS SHOWING YOU THAT THERE ARE EIGHT DIFFERENT WAYS A STUDENT CAN SHOW THAT THEY ARE PREPARED WHEN THEY LEAVE US. THREE OF THEM I CIRCLED FOR YOU.
TWO OF THOSE THREE ARE THAT THE STUDENTS NEED TO COMPLETE CTE PATHWAY. THAT MEANS THEY NEED TO TAKE TWO COURSES WITHIN THE SAME AREA AND THEY HAVE TO MEET AN ADDITIONAL CRITERIA. THAT COULD MEAN SCORING A PARTICULAR SCORE FOR ONE OF THE AREAS OR IT COULD BE MEETING ALL OF THE UC A THROUGH G REQUIREMENTS.
SO YOUR CAREER TECH ED PROGRAMS ARE FUNDED THROUGH THE LCAP PROCESS. WE ALSO APPLY FOR ADDITIONAL FUNDING. YOUR CAREER TECH EAL FUNDS AND Y ARE THE CARL PERKINS FUNDS. AND WE ALSO RECEIVE STATE FUNDING THROUGH THE CTEC FUNDS. IT IS APPLIED THROUGH ADDITIONAL FUNDING THROUGH THE WORKFORCE PROGRAM FUNDING.
AND JUST A QUICK OVERVIEW AND YOU CAN LOOK AT THE SCREEN AND WE HAVE HAD TWO OF THOSE SPECIAL K-12 GRANTS.
THIS IS A FAIRLY NEW OPPORTUNITY.
ONE IS TO WORK ON PATHWAYS TO ENSURE ALL OF OUR COURSES WERE ALIGNED AND THEY HAD THE INDUSTRY GRADE-LEVEL EQUIPMENT IN THE ROOM. THE OTHER ONE WAS TO UPDATE OUR AUTO PROGRAM. AND THAT IS THE CONES WE HAVE DONE AT BELLFLOWER. MOST IMPORTANTLY WHAT DO WE OFFER OUR STUDENTS? WHAT ARE THE PATHWAYS? AT BELL -- BELLFLOWER WE HAVE CABINET TREE, WOODWORKING AND DESIGN AND HOSPITALITY AND GRAPHIC TECHNOLOGY AND SYSTEMS DIAGNOSTICS AND REPAIRS AND MENTAL AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH.
IF YOU SEE THE AS STRICT -- AS STRICT IT IS A NEW PATHWAY TO THE SITE OR NEWLY REMODELED OR NEWLY REWRITTEN IN THE CURRICULUM TO ALIGN WITH CURRENT INDUSTRY.
OUR PATHWAYS AT MAYFAIR HIGH SCHOOL, SOME ARE THE SAME AND SOME ARE DIFFERENT. THEY OFFER CABINET TREE AND WOODWORKING AND ENGINEERING AND OFFER MARKETING AND FINANCIAL SERVICES. THAT'S DIFFERENT.
THEY HAVE SOFTWARE SYSTEM DEVELOPS -- DEVELOPMENT AND RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL CONSTRUCTION AND GAMES AND SIMULATIONS. AT SOMERSET THEY OFFER TWO PATHWAYS, CABINET TREE, MILL -- MILL WORK AND WOODWORKING AND ENGINEERING DESIGN. AND BELLFLOWER UNIFIED STUDENTS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN AN ADDITIONAL PATHWAY THROUGH OUR AFTER SCHOOL OR SOMETIMES DURING THE DAY ROP PROGRAM. THERE IS AN ROP CTE PROGRAM THAT
[01:50:01]
PROVIDES SERVICES FOR BELLFLOWER AND LYNNWOOD STUDENTS.WE HAVE THE SAME EXPECTATIONS FOR OUR CLASSES.
WE ARE ENSURING IT IS INDUSTRY ALIGNED AND THE COURSES ARE UC A THROUGH G APPROVED AND INDUSTRY EQUIPMENT AND THE TEACHERS ARE HIGHLY QUALIFIED SO THE SAME TYPES OF OPPORTUNITIES.
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN CAL APS IS THEY DON'T RECEIVE FUNDS FROM CTAG AND PERKINS. SO THE FUNDING COMES FROM THE K-12 WORKFORCE GRANT. SO WE HAVE WORKED TO FUND THAT PROGRAM. AND EACH ONE IS PRETTY UNIQUE.
YOU HAVE ONE FOR PATIENT CARE AND ONE FOR BUILDING A BRIDGE AND THAT IS A PWEUPBLG BETWEEN THE K-12 AND COMMUNITY COLLEGE PROGRAM. AND THERE IS THE BIO ANIMAKER AND A START IN ENERGY PATHWAY AND TAKING FLIGHT.
THAT'S THE NEW AVIATION PATHWAY. PATHWAYS THAT ARE OFFERED IN THE CAL APS, THERE IS A RESIDENTIAL COMMERCIAL PRODUCTION AND PRODUCTION AND MANAGERIAL ARTS, FOOD SERVICE AND HOSPITALITY EDUCATION, FASHION DESIGN AND MERCHANDISING AND GAMES AND SIMULATION AND MANUFACTURING AND PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT, ENTREPRENEUR SHIP OR SELF-EMPLOYMENT AND PUBLIC SAFETY AND EMERGENCY RESPONSE AND EARLY CHILDHOOD.
THE BEAUTY OF THIS PARTICULAR PROGRAM, YOU HAVE STUDENTS THAT ARE TRAVELING FROM 9 DIFFERENT HIGH SCHOOLS THAT CAN PARTICIPATE. THE MAJORITY OF THE COURSES ARE HAPPENING AFTER SCHOOL. FOR EXAMPLE WE HAVE CULINARY ARTS AT BELLFLOWER HIGH. IF ARE YOU A MAYFAIR STUDENTS YOU CAN'T TAKE THE PROGRAM UNLESS YOU JOIN THE CAL APS PROGRAM AND YOU TAKE IT AFTER SCHOOL.
IT OPENS DOORS TO TAKE PATHWAYS THEY DON'T HAVE AT THEIR HOME SCHOOL SITE. THE FUN PART.
WHAT DO THE CLASSROOMS LOOK LIKE? WHAT DO YOU SEE IN A CTE CLASSROOM? LOTS OF ACTION. WE ARE LEARNING, BUT FOCUSING ON HANDS ON SKILLS. THAT'S PART OF THE INSTRUCTION.
THIS IS OUR PATIENT CARE. YOU WILL SEE STUDENTS WORKING IN OUR MOCK MEDICAL LAB FACILITY. YOU WILL SEE STUDENTS IN THE HEALTH LAB. THOSE ARE EMT STUDENTS AND A LOT OF OUR STUDENTS ARE IN CPR CLASSES DURING THE DAYTIME AND ON THE WEEKEND. THIS IS OUR ATHLETIC TRAINING ROOM. THIS IS OUR TV/FILM/VIDEO PROGRAM AT BELLFLOWER HIGH. THIS IS EMERGENCY RESPONSE.
THIS PARTICULAR PATHWAY IS AFTER SCHOOL.
SO ANY STUDENT CAN PARTICIPATE. STUDENTS CAN TAKE FIREFIGHTING OR EMT. THIS IS OUR TRANSPORTATION PATHWAY OFFERED DURING THE DAYTIME AT BELLFLOWER AND AFTER SCHOOL SO ANY STUDENT CAN PARTICIPATE.
THIS IS PUBLIC SAFETY. AGAIN, IT IS OFFERED AFTER SCHOOL. STUDENTS INTERESTED IN LAW ENFORCEMENT CAREERS, THIS IS WHAT THEY DO.
THAT PICTURE IS THE BRAND NEW POLICE CAR THAT WE HAVE JUST UH KAOEUR -- WE HAVE JUST ACQUIRED. IT STILL HAS A MINOR THING THAT NEEDS TO BE REPAIRED. WE WILL SOON HAVE THAT CAR.
WE DO A COMBINATION OF BOTH. WE HAVE STUDENTS THAT ARE REALLY LOOKING AT THEIR SKILLS OF CAB THET TREE -- CABINATRY.
THE L.A. AREA HAS A LARGE NEED FOR THE LARGE, HEAVY CONSTRUCTION TYPES OF SKILLS LIKE ELECTRICAL AND MASONRY.
WE HAVE LOTS OF BUILDINGS AND CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS GOING ON IN L.A. WE WANT TO MAKE SURE WE ARE TRAINING OUR STUDENTS TO BE PREPARED FOR THAT.
THIS IS OUR GAMES AND SIMULATION HAPPENING AT MAYFAIR AND AFTER SCHOOL THIS. IS FASHION DESIGN AND MERCHANDISING.
THIS IS OFFERED AFTER SCHOOL TO OUR STUDENTS.
FOOD SERVICE AND HOSPITALITY IS OFFERED AT BELLFLOWER AND AFTER SCHOOL. THIS IS THE MAKER SPACE.
WE CALL IT PRODUCT INNOVATION AND DESIGN.
THIS IS HAPPENING AFTER SCHOOL. THIS IS WHERE EARLIER SOMEONE AMERICAN -- MENTIONED SEEING THE DRONES FLYING OVER THE SOMERSET OPEN HOUSE. THOSE STUDENTS ARE TAKING THIS
PARTICULAR CLASS. >> ONE OF THE FUN PARTS IS STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN THINGS LIKE SKILLS USA AND THEY GO TO THE REGIONAL, STATE AND NATIONAL EVENTS WHERE THEY COMPETE AMONG OTHER HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN THE SAME AREA.
IF YOU ARE LEARNING PATIENT CARE IN BELLFLOWER YOU CAN GO AND COMPETE IN MAYBE A HEALTH BOWL WITH OTHER STUDENTS IN OTHER HIGH SCHOOLS. I WOULD SAY IT IS PROBABLY NERVE-WRACKING FOR OUR STUDENTS. IT IS COMPETITIVE.
BUT IT IS A VERY SPECIAL EXPERIENCE.
WE GET TO MEET KIDS FROM ALL OVER.
AND IT IS REALLY NEAT. THEY FEEL CONFIDENT WHEN THEY RETURN. THEY GET TO -- THEY FEEL GOOD ABOUT WHAT THEY HAVE LEARNED. AND WHETHER THEY HAVE PLACED REALLY HIGH OR WHETHER THEY HAVE JUST PARTICIPATED WE REL -- WE
[01:55:02]
REALLY ENCOURAGE THEM TO KNOW IT IS ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY.IT IS ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE. WE ARE NOT GOING THERE BECAUSE WE WANT YOU TO COME IN TPO*EURS -- FIRST.
WE WOULD LIKE THAT, OF COURSE. THAT'S NOT WHY WE ARE GOING.
IT IS FOR THE EXPERIENCE. IT IS A LEARNING EXPERIENCE.
WHAT ABOUT MIDDLE SCHOOL? WE THINK ABOUT CAREER TECH AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL AND WHAT ABOUT THE YOUNGER STUDENTS? AT THE MIDDLE SCHOOL WE INTRODUCE OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS TO CAREER TECH ED. WE HAVE ENGINEERING AND WE HAVE COMPUTER SCIENCE AND WE HAVE VIDEO GAME DESIGN AND GRAPHICS AND HOME ARTS AND E SPORTS AND HEALTH.
OUR LITTLE GUYS AT THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN THE LAST COUPLE YEARS WE REALLY TRY TO INVOLVE OUR ELEMENTARY TEACHERS AND STUDENTS AND IN SOME FUN, CREATIVE WAYS TO GET THE THOUGHT ABOUT STEAM EDUCATION INTO THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL.
ALL TEACHERS ARE INCORPORATING THESE SKILLS ALL THE TIME.
SOMETIMES IT IS NEAT TO CALL IT OUT AND SET IT ASIDE BECAUSE IT CALLS OUR PARENTS' ATTENTION TO IT AND THE REST OF US.
WE GET TO TAKE THE TIME TO DO SOMETHING UNIQUE ON THE CAMPUS.
WE ALSO DO VISITS TO ELEMENTARY SITES.
THIS YEAR BAXTER ELEMENTARY REQUESTED OUR CTE TEACHERS TO COME OUT AT LUNCHTIME AND SPEAK WITH THEIR GRADE LEVELS AND SO WE ARRANGED FOR THAT. WE HAVE BEEN ASKED BY WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY TO DO THE SAME THING AT THEIR LUNCHTIMES.
IT IS FUN FOR OUR TEACHERS WHO ARE USED TO WORKING WITH THE BIG GUYS. THEY GET TO GO DOWN TO THE LITTLE GUYS AND COME BACK WITH STORIES.
IT IS NEAT FOR THE YOUNGER STUDENTS BECAUSE THEY CAN LEARN WHAT THE DIFFERENT OPPORTUNITIES ARE WHEN THEY GET TO MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL. WHAT'S COMING UP? YOU HAVE SEEN ME TALK BEFORE ABOUT WHAT IS COMING UP IN THE NEW STEAM BUILDING. THE LAB, WE ARE READY TO GO.
WE HAVE EVERYTHING WE NEED AND IT WILL BE AMAZING WHEN YOU SEE THAT. WE HAVE OUR EQUIPMENT HERE FOR OUR VIRTUAL REALITY LAB. BOTH LABS WILL BE USED BY MULTIPLE TEACHERS AND NOT JUST ONE.
THE TEACHERS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO CHECK INTO THE LABS AND USE IT. BRAND-NEW NEW, AND IT IS NEW BECAUSE WE JUST WROTE THE GRANT. WE WILL BE STARTING UAS DRONES.
THIS IS FOR STUDENTS INTERESTED IN EITHER OR BOTH.
THEY MAY BE INTERESTED IN BECOMING A PILOT AT SOME POINT IN THEIR LIFE, OR MAYBE INTERESTED IN FLYING DRONES.
THERE ARE LOTS OF OPPORTUNITIES AND MANY INDUSTRIES FOR DRONE PLANES. YOU CAN SEE IT WITH LAW ENFORCEMENT AND FIREFIGHTING AND REAL ESTATE.
THERE ARE LOTS OF NEEDS FOR PILOTS FOR A DRONE.
WE ARE TRAINING OUR STUDENTS AND WE ARE WORKING WITH THE LOCAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE TO GET IT UP AND RUNNING FOR OUR KIDS.
THESE ARE ALL OF OUR BUSINESS PARTNERS.
CAREER TECH ED PATHWAY COURSES CANNOT FUNCTION AS A STAND ALONE. THEY NEED BUSINESS PARTNERS.
THEY NEED INDUSTRY SUPPORTERS. THE REASON WHY IS THEY ARE THE ONES WHO INFORM US WHAT IS GOING ON CURRENTLY.
WHAT WILL THEY SEE WHEN THEY LEAVE US? OUR PARTNER DOES THAT AND THIS IS A LIST OF ALL WE ARE CURRENTLY WORKING WITH. I WANTED TO CALL A SPECIAL ATTENTION TO OUR DISTRICT WEBSITE.
WE HAVE SPENT TIME UPDATING THE CTE INFORMATION ON THE WEBSITE.
IF YOU ARE A STUDENT OR PARENT, YOU GO TO THE WEBSITE AND ON TOP THERE ARE TABS YOU CAN CLICK. IF YOU GO TO THE PROGRAM TAB, YOU CLICK IT AND ONE OF THE PROGRAMS YOU CAN LOOK AT IS CAREER TECH ED. WE HAVE BROKEN DOWN THE CAREER TECH ED WEBSITE TO A FEW RESOURCES.
WE HAVE THINGS LIKE OUR PATHWAYS ON THERE.
EVERY YEAR YOU CAN LOOK AT WHAT ARE THE PATHWAYS AND WHAT'S BEEN UPDATED AND WHAT'S NEW? YOU LOOK AT THE CTE ADVISOR AND WHAT ARE THEY MEETING ABOUT AND WHAT ARE THE TOPICS THEY DISCUSS? YOU CAN LOOK AT PARENT RESOURCES. WE CREATED A WHOLE PAGE FOR PARENTS. THEY CAN FIND OUT MORE INFORMATION ABOUT PROGRAMS OUR STUDENTS CAN ENROLL IN WHEN THEY LEAVE US. THEY CAN FIND OUT FINANCIAL INFORMATION. THERE ARE SURVEYS THE STUDENTS CAN TAKE TO HELP THEM DEVELOP THE INTERESTS TO HELP THEM FIGURE OUT WHAT AREA THEY MAY BE INTERESTED IN.
YOU CAN SEE CTE VIDEOS COMING SOON.
SO RIGHT NOW WE ARE WORKING ON A PROJECT DISTRICT WIDE FOR THE DAYTIME AND THE CAL APS PROGRAM WHERE WE ARE GOING INTO CLASSROOMS AND INTERVIEWING A STUDENT AND INTERVIEWING A TEACHER AND TAKING CLASSROOM VIDEOS WITH THE INTENTION OF PUTTING THEM TOGETHER IN SHORT VIDEOS THAT CAN BE POSTED ON THE WEBSITE THAT STUDENTS AND PARENTS CAN VIEW.
IF THEY ARE TO THE SURE WHAT PROJECT LEAD THE WAY IS THEY CAN CLICK ON IT AND WHAT DOES IT LOOK LIKE TO BE A STUDENT IN A PROJECT LEAD THE WAY CLASSROOM? WHAT ARE THEY DOING? STUDENT RESOURCES,ION WE CREATED A STUDENT RESOURCE PAGE.
A LOT OF TIMES WHEN WE ARE TALKING WITH OUR STUDENTS, TYPICALLY AT THE HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL, WE ARE ASKING THEM WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WHEN YOU LEAVE?
[02:00:01]
SOMETIMES WE GET THE, I DON'T KNOW.WE ASK THEM WHAT ARE YOU INTERESTED IN.
WHAT IS YOUR STRENGTH? THEY CAN GO HERE.
THERE ARE SURVEYS THEY CAN TAKE TO HELP THEM IDENTIFY MAYBE AREAS THEY MIGHT BE INTERESTED IN.
LASTLY ON THIS CTE SITE WE HAVE SOME MOBILE APPS THAT YOU CAN DOWNLOAD AND PUT ON YOUR COMPUTER OR CARRY IT ON YOUR PHONE IF YOU ARE A PARENT OR STUDENT.
THESE ARE RESOURCES THAT WILL HELP YOU.
TONIGHT WE HAVE SPECIAL INDIVIDUALS WITH US.
VERY IMPORTANT WE TALK ABOUT OUR KAU -- CAREER TECH ED PROGRAM AND SOMETIMES I HAVE A BOARD MEMBER ASK ME WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THEY LEAVE US? HOW ARE THEY DOING? DO WE KNOW? DO WE HAVE A STORY? WE HAVE SOME STORIES FOR YOU TONIGHT.
THE VERY FIRST STUDENT I WILL INTRODUCE TO YOU IS MELANIE GONZALEZ. SHE GRADUATED IN 2019/20 SCHOOL YEAR WITH A 4.0 GPA. SHE TOOK FIVE AP COURSES WHILE ATTENDING BELLFLOWER SCHOOL. HER INSTRUCTOR IS MELISSA ELLIS.
AND WE WILL HAVE MELANIE COME UP AND TELL YOU WHAT SHE IS DOING NOW SO YOU CAN HEAR A STORY FROM ONE OF OUR STUDENTS.
GOOD EVENING, PRESIDENT GARZA, AND MEMBERS OF THE BOARD AND CABINET AND DR. DRATI AND GUESTS AS WELL AS STAFF.
AS YOU KNOW MY NAME IS MELANIE GONZALEZ AND I AM SPEAKING ON BEHALF OF BELLFLOWER HIGH SCHOOL REGARDING THE IMPORTANCE OF THE PATIENT CARE PATHWAY COURSES THAT I HAVE HAD AND CONTINUE TO HAVE AN IMPACT IN MY EDUCATION. SO I AM A BELLFLOWER HIGH ALUM -- ALUMNIST AND GO TO CAL STATE LONG BEACH AND A PRE NURSING MAJOR. SOME OF THOSE THAT HAD THE BIGGEST IMPACT PURSUING MY BACHELOR'S IN NURSING IS THE INTRO TO HEALTH CAREER COURSE THAT BELLFLOWER HIGH SCHOOL HAS.
THAT COURSE ALLOWED ME TO FIGURE OUT WHAT CAREER IN HEALTHCARE I WANTED TO PURSUE AND WHICH I ENJOYED THE MOST.
NOT ONLY DID IT HELP ME SIMPLIFY MY PATHWAY, BUT EXPLORED MANY OTHER PATHWAYS. SORRY.
ONE MOMENT. AFTER ENTERING THE HEALTH KAU -- CAREER I TOOK THE MEDICAL ASSISTANT COURSE.
I WAS SO EXCITED FOR THE COURSE BECAUSE IT WAS MORE SPECIFIC TO WHAT I WANTED TO DO AND STUDY IN COLLEGE.
I WAS ABLE TO ACQUIRE ALL OF THE KNOWLEDGE NEEDED FOR THE CERTIFIED CLINICAL MEDICAL ASSISTANT EXAM.
WE LEARNED MULTIPLE TERMS AND MEDICAL LANGUAGE I LEARNED TO MY ADVANTAGE WHEN TAKING THE SCIENCE-BASED COURSES SUCH AS MICROBIOLOGY, PHYSIOLOGY AND ANATOMY.
BESIDES THAT WE ALSO -- SORRY. ONE MOMENT.
WHAT WE ALSO LEARNED WAS THE BACKGROUND OF MEDICINE AND HOW IT EVOLVED. EVOLVED IN THAT COURSE AND WHO INVENTED IT AND HOW IT BEGAN. I WAS EXPOSED TO AND GAINED MANY SKILLS. I LEARNED TO YOU A APPLY AND REMOVE EKG'S IN A PROPER WAY. I LEARNED HOW TO DRAW BLOOD AND HOW TO ADD PRESSURE WHEN USING AN ELASTIC BAND.
I LEARNED THE ORDER OF DRAW AND TO REMOVE PERM PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT PROPERLY AND MORE. I LEARNED HOW TO DO A RESUME IN PREPARATION FOR INTERVIEWS WE HAD IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SEMESTER. THAT HELPED ME BE MORE PREPARED FOR JOB INTERVIEWS AND INTERVIEWS I HAD WITH SOME NURSING PROGRAMS. THE SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE I HAVE GAINED WHILE TAKING THIS COURSE HAS GIVEN ME A HEAD START TO WHAT I WAS BEING CAUGHT IN COLLEGE.
ASIDE FROM THE TWO COURSES AT BELLFLOWER I TOOK A CTE CLASS WITH CAL APS CALLED HEALTH OCCUPATIONS.
I WRAS ABLE -- WAS ABLE TO SHADOW AND ASSIST NURSES IN MULTIPLE DEPARTMENT SKPW-Z I WAW THEY FUNCTION.
THIS LEAD ME BEING INTRODUCED TO A PROM THAT IS AN -- PROGRAM THAT IS AN ORGANIZATION FOR FUTURE HEALTH PROFESSIONALS.
I WAS ABLE TO COMPETE AND REPRESENT BELLFLOWER AT THE CONFERENCE THEY HELD IN SACRAMENTO.
THE MEDICAL ASSISTANT AND HEALTH OCCUPATION COURSE WENT HAND IN HAND AS WELL BECAUSE I WAS ABLE TO USE THE KNOWLEDGE FROM ONE COURSE AND THE OTHER AND APPLY THEM WHENEVER WAS NEED -- NEEDED. ALL IN ALL THE THREE COURSES HAD A MAJOR IMPACT IN MY PATHWAY TOWARD OBTAINING MY BSN.
I ENTERED COLLEGE WITH PRIOR KNOWLEDGE AND STRENGTH -- STRENGTHENING MY RESUME WITH THE VOLUNTEER HOURS I DID THROUGH EACH OF THESE COURSES. WHEN APPLYING TO THE PROGRAMS, HAVING THESE ADDED SKILLS AND HEALTHCARE EXPOSURE IS INFLUENTIAL IN THE ADMISSION PROCESS.
ANOTHER MAJOR TAKE AWAY FROM THE MEDICAL ASSISTANT COURSE
[02:05:02]
SPECIFICALLY WAS THAT I WAS ABLE TO PASS THE EXAM AND BECOME A CERTIFIED MEDICAL ASSISTANT. I STILL HAD MY LICENSE WHICH I HOPE TO UTILIZE IN THE COMING MONTHS AND GET MORE HEALTHCARE EXPERIENCE AND HOURS THAT I CAN -- THAT CAN CONTINUE TO INFLUENCE MY RESUME. I WASN'T AEUBLG TO -- ABLE TO WORK AS A MEDICAL ASSISTANT IN THE PAST BECAUSE OF PERSONAL CIRCUMSTANCE, BUT FOR OTHERS WOULD BE INFLUENTIAL BECAUSE LOTS OF NURSING PROGRAMS ARE EXPERIENCING -- RECOMMENDING YOU HAVE WORK HOURS IN HOSPITALS OR SOME HEALTHCARE EXPERIENCE.I KNOW IT IS HARD TO GET THAT EXPERIENCE ONCE YOU LEAVE HIGH SCHOOL WHICH MAKES THE PROGRAMS THAT MUCH MORE SPECIAL AND THE KNOWLEDGE IN ITSELF IS PRICELESS GAUSS OF THE -- BECAUSE OF THE SKILLS YOU LEARN ALONG THE WAY. HAVING THIS LICENSE CAN GIVE STUDENTS AN OPPORTUNITY TO GET A JOB OUTSIDE OF HIGH SCHOOL THAT IS WITHIN THE MEDICAL FIELD AND WITH ALL OF THESE THREE COURSES PROVIDED TO STUDENTS, IT CAN PLAY A HUGE ROLE IN THE PATHWAY TOWARD A HEALTH CAREER LIKE IT DID MINE AND IT CONTINUES TO HAVE A HUGE ROLE. IT OPENS DOORS AND PROVIDES NUMEROUS OPPORTUNITIES. THE EXPOSURE AND EXPERIENCES YOU GET WHILE COMPLETING THESE PATIENT PATHWAY COURSES SHOW A LOT OF NURSING PROGRAMS THAT YOU WIN THIS FIRST -- YOU WITNESS FIRSTHAND WHAT IT TAKES AND WHAT IT IS LIKE TO BE A NURSE AND WHAT THEY DO KWH IS WHAT THE -- WHICH IS WHAT THE PROGRAMS ARE INTERESTED IN. THEY WANT TO KNOW WHAT YOU ARE SIGNING UP FOR AND WHEN YOU WANT TO PURSUE A BSN AND BECOME A REGISTERED NURSE. KEEP IN MIND WHILE I WAS TAKING THESE CLASS IS -- WAS IN 2020 WHEN THE LOCK DOWN TOOK PLACE.
I IMAGINE ALL OF THE HANDS ON SKILLS AND THE EXPERIENCES AND THE OPPORTUNITIES I COULD HAVE GAINED ASIDE FROM THE FIRST SEMESTER WOULD BE UNIMAGINABLE BECAUSE WE ONLY DID THE FIRST SEMESTER AND NOW IMAGINE THE OTHER HALF OF WHAT I WAS ABLE T.
RIGHT NOW I'M SURE THE EXPERIENCES AND THE SKILLS THAT CURRENT STUDENTS ARE OBTAINING ARE EVEN GREATER THAN I WAS ABLE TO HAVE AND PUT TOWARD MY DEGREE I WAS ABLE TO CREATE MY FAVORITE MEMORIES REGARDING HEALTHCARE THROUGH THESE PROGRAMS. THAT IS ALL. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME AND HOPE YOU HAVE A GREAT REST OF YOUR NIGHT [APPLAUSE].
>> THANK YOU, MELANIE. THE NEXT STUDENT IS MARK RODRIGUEZ. HE IS A SENIOR AT MAYFAIR HIGH SCHOOL AND HIS CURRENT GPA IS 4.3 AND HE HAS TAKEN SIX AP COURSES. HE WILL BE A GAMES AND SIMULATION PATHWAY COMPLETER. HE IS MAYFAIR'S VERY FIRST, A BIG DEAL, FIRST E SPORTS STUDENT TO SIGN AND RECEIVE BOTH AN ACADEMIC AND ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP FOR A 4-YEAR COLLEGE WHICH HE PLANS TO ATTEND THIS COMING FALL.
HIS INSTRUCTOR IS VICTOR PALACIOS BETTER KNOWN AS WIZ.
MARK, COME ON UP. >> HELLO, EVERYONE.
MY NAME IS MARK RODRIGUEZ. I AM A STUDENT OF THE GAMES AND SIMULATION PATHWAY WITH MY TEACHER, VICTOR PALACIOS.
I WAS ABOUT TO SAY IT, BUT SHE SAID IT FIRST.
I AM THE FIRST STUDENT IN THE BELLFLOWER UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT TO RECEIVE AN E SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP.
I GOT THIS FAR BECAUSE OF THE CAPS PROGRAM.
THEY FIRST INTERESTED THE E SPORTS COURSE DURING MY FRESHMAN YEAR. THE THING I LEARN IN E SPORTS IS THAT -- I'M SO SORRY. IN E SPORTS IS NOT JUST ABOUT VIDEO GAMES. IT IS ABOUT TREATING VIDEO GAMES AS A SPORT. FOR EXAMPLE, BRACKETOLOGY, STATISTICS, BROADCASTING, GRAPHIC ART DESIGN, COMMENTARY, ET CETERA. THESE OTHER THINGS THAT ALL SPORTS HAVE THAT E SPORTS ALSO HAS.
SO ONCE AGAIN, I I WOULD LIKE TO GIVE THANK TO THE CAPS PROGRAM TO PROVIDING CAREER TECH IN EDUCATION COURSES SUCH AS E SPORTS AND I WOULD LIKE TO SAY THANKS TO MY E SPORTS TEACHER, VICTOR PALACIOS, WHO CREATED THE E SPORTS PROGRAM AT MAYFAIR.
I HOPE THE TEAM WILL BE AT THE FOREFRONT OF CIF.
[APPLAUSE]. >> THANK YOU, MARK.
OUR FINAL STUDENT JOINING US THIS EVENING IS DILLON DELGADIO.
SHE A JUNIOR AND CURRENTLY HAS A 3.2 GPA.
HIS INSTRUCTOR IS VICTOR PALACIOS.
[02:10:01]
WE HAVE A SHORT VIDEO TO SHARE ABOUT DILLON.CAN WE SHARE THE VIDEO FIRST? >> HELLO.
MY NAME IS VICTOR PALACIOS ALSO KNOWN AS THE WIZ.
I AM A SPORTS AND GAMING INSTRUCTOR HERE AT MAYFAIR.
AND I AM A GRADUATE OF THE CLASS OF 97 FROM MAYFAIR HIGH SCHOOL.
DILLON IS A JUNIOR HERE AT MAYFAIR.
HE HAS TAKEN MY E SPORTS AND GAMING CLASS, LEVEL 1.
THE DAY I MET DILLON, I NOTICED DILLON AND IT PUT ME IN A SITUATION WHERE I HAD TO UNDERSTAND.
COME TO HAVING A CON SRER -- CONVERSATION, THE AGENT EXPLAINED THAT DILLON HAD A VISUAL IMPAIRMENT WHERE HE COULD NOT SEE. I THOUGHT TO MYSELF A STUDENT THAT CAN'T SEE IS TAKING E SPORTS.
HOW DO I APPROACH THIS? >> PEACE AND LOVE.
GOOD TO SEE YOU, MAN. LET'S GET GOING.
LET'S GET OUR PROJECT GOING. >> I WAS BORN VISUALLY IMPAIRED, BUT EVEN THOUGH I HAVE A VISUAL IMPAIRMENT, I HAVE BEEN PLAYING GAMES SINCE I WAS 7 YEARS OLD. BEING IN WIZ'S E SPORTS CLASS I HAVE LEARNED HOW TO STREAM AND FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE I THINK THAT IS SOMETHING THEY NEVER REALLY PICTURE WHEN THEY THINK OF A VISUAL IMPAIRMENT AND IT IS BEING IN AN E SPORTS COURSE HAS BEEN VERY -- IT HAS BEEN A NEW EXPERIENCE FOR SINCE I HAVE NEVER REALLY BEEN IN AN E SPORTS ENVIRONMENT.
>> FIRST, I AM USING THE LAPTOP THAT HAS THE SCREEN READER INSTALLED. WITH THIS I CAN ALL -- AUDIBLY KNOW WHAT IS ON THE SCREEN. IN ORDER TO GO TO THE APPLICATION I NEED, I CAN HIT CODES DEPENDING ON WHAT THE APPLICATION STARTS WITH. IN THIS CASE OBS UNTIL YOU FIND OBS. AND ONCE ARE YOU ON OBS YOU HIT ENTER. ALL RIGHT.
HERE I HAVE A SCREEN THAT I USE. IT HAS MY PRESTS -- PRE SETS MADE EASIER FOR ME. I HAVE MY START SCREEN THERE.
I HAVE MY GAME PLATE RIGHT HERE AND DOWN HERE I HAVE MY START AND END RECORDING AND OVER HERE I HAVE START AND END OF STREAMING. FIRST IT IS STARTING RECORDING.
FROM THERE I CAN SWITCH OVER, REDEEM PLAY I WILL DO A QUICK MATCH. I AM ALWAYS MOSTLY CATCHING
[02:15:30]
MYSELF WHAT I AM DOING. BY GIVING ME THE OPPORTUNITY TO DO WHAT I LIKE AND ACCOMPLISH SOMETHING I WOULD HAVE NEVER IMAGINED ACCOMPLISHING IN THE E SPORTS CLASS IS SOMETHING THAT HAS MADE ME CHANGE A LOT AND THESE CHANGES ARE SOMETHING THAT IS NOT NORMALLY EXPOSED IN THESE TYPES OF ENVIRONMENTS.[APPLAUSE]. >> ASSUMING A CAREER.
>> A STUDENT THAT HAS BEEN ABLE TO OVERCOME ODDS AND SHOW THE
WORLD THAT GAME. >> HELLO, MEMBERS AND ATTENDEES.
I AM DILLON AND I HAVE BEEN TAKING WIZ'S E SPORTS CLASS THIS LAST SEMESTER AND THIS SECOND SEMESTER AND IN HIS CLASS HE HAS DONE SOMETHING THAT NOT A LOT OF PEOPLE WOULD KNOW HOW TO HANDLE.
IT IS HELPING SOMEBODY WITH VISUAL PROBLEMS STREAM AND YOU WOULD THINK IT REQUIRES YOU TO SEE.
HE, AS FAR AS I KNOW, NEVER HAD ANY TYPE OF SIMILAR SITUATIONS.
SO FOR HIM TO MAKE SUCH A EFFORT TO HELP ME ACCOMPLISH SOMETHING THAT ALL OF MY OTHER PEERS CAN ACCOMPLISH AND HELP ME DO SOMETHING THAT I HAVE NEVER REALLY CONSIDERED POSSIBLE FOR ME BECAUSE OF MY VISUAL IMPAIRMENT MEANT A LOT TO ME.
ME AND WIZ ARE GOING TO WORK TO CREATE CAREER PATHS FOR ME IN THE E SPORTS INDUSTRY WHRER -- WHERE WE HAVE PERFECTED THE STREAMING PROCESS. WE HAVE BEEN GIVEN ACCESS TO ALL OF THE TECHNOLOGY WE NEED IN ORDER TO MAKE THE STREAMING PROCESS POSSIBLE. AND WE PLAN ON WORKING THIS SEMESTER ON GROWING AND CREATING A PLATFORM FOR ME AND WE ARE ALSO PLANNING TO START A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION.
WE ARE WORKING ON IT NEXT YEAR. I WILL BE TAKING WHIZ'S E SPORTS CLASS. AND WE ARE GOING TO BE MAKING IT POSSIBLE AND THE OVERALL GOAL IS TO CREATE AN ORGANIZATION THAT CAN HELP OTHER KIDS LIKE ME THAT HAVE INTEREST IN E SPORTS IN GENERAL. I THINK VIDEO GAMES AND E SPORTS IN GENERAL IS GROWING FASTER AND FASTER.
ESPECIALLY SINCE PARENTS ARE GIVING KIDS THINGS LIKE IPADS AT YOUNGER AND YOUNGER AGES. THE INDUSTRY WILL KEEP GOING AND THERE IS GOING TO BE MORE STUDENTS LIKE ME THAT DON'T HAVE SOMEONE WITH THE KNOWLEDGE OR COMMITMENT THAT WIZ HAD WITH ME.
[02:20:02]
AND I WANT TO BE ABLE TO FIND THESE STUDENTS AND HELP THEM ACHIEVE WHAT I ACHIEVED WITH WHIZ.I THINK THIS IS MORE THAN POSSIBLE SINCE THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE THAT ARE GOING TO BE HELPING ME AND WIZ INCLUDING THE PERSON WHO FILMED AND EDITED THE VIDEO YOU JUST WATCHED, ANDY AND DAVID, WHO WORK WITH ME CREATING THE VISUALLY APPEALING OVERLAYS AND THEY ALSO STREAM WITH ME AND I THINK WE HAVE A GREAT TEAM DYNAMIC GOING AND IT IS JUST A MATTER OF TIME UNTIL WE ACCOMPLISH EVERYTHING WE WANT TO ACCOMPLISH.
[APPLAUSE]. >> AGAIN, THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR TECH PROGRAM. WE ARE A DIVERSE GROUP AND WE ARE A PASSIONATE STAFF OF TEACHERS WHO REALLY TRY SUPER HARD. ALL OF OUR CTE TEACHERS DO TO MAKE OUR CLASSES INCLUSIVE FOR ALL.
THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME TONIGHT. [APPLAUSE].
>> DO YOU GUYS HAVE IF I COMMENTS?
>> I JUST WANT TO MAKE A COMMENT AND I WILL TRY NOT TO GET EMOTIONAL. FIRST OF ALL, YOU DO AMAZING WORK WITH CAL APS. THANK YOU SO MUCH.
AND I HAVE A DISTINCT PLEASURE WITH DR. ELHESSEN TO SIT ON THE BOARD AND I CAN SEE ALL OF THE THINGS YOU DO AND IT IS AMAZING.
AND WIZ, MR. PALACIOS, I CAN TELL HOW PROUD YOU ARE OF THEM JUST WATCHING YOU AND IT REALLY MEANS A LOT.
HAVE I A DAUGHTER THAT SPECIAL -- I HAVE A DAUGHTER WHO IS SPECIAL NEEDS AND LOVES TO STREAM AND PLAYS GAMES.
TO KNOW SOMETHING LIKE THIS IS HAPPENING WHEN SHE GETS TO MAYFAIR IT WARMS MY HEART. SO THANK YOU.
[APPLAUSE]. >> I JUST WANT TO COMMENT TOO THAT I AM FAMILIAR WITH JAWS, BUT I HAVE NEVER SEEN IT USED WITH ANIMATION IN THAT PERSPECTIVE.
GOOD JOB ON USING AN EXISTING ACCOMMODATION THAT CAN SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS IN MOVING AHEAD. THANK YOU.
[APPLAUSE]. >> I ALSO HAD A COMMENT.
I WANT TO THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR WHAT YOU DO AS A TEACH ARE OF OUR KIDS. I APPRECIATE IT.
IT FEELS A LOT LONGER, AND I HAVEN'T BEEN HERE TWO MONTHS, AND LISA YOU DO A GREAT JOB. EVERY PLACE I ADVICE -- VISIT AND I LOOK AT THESE PROGRAMS, THEY ARE AMAZING SO THANK YOU
FOR WHAT YOU DO. >> ANY OTHER COMMENTS OR
ONE FROM ME. I JUST WANT TO SAY THAT THE CAL APS PROGRAM IMPACTS US STUDENTS.
FROM EVERYONE -- ALL OF MY FRIENDS IN THE PROGRAMS AND IN A CAL APS PROGRAM AND PEOPLE I KNOW IN THOSE PROGRAMS, THOSE ARE REALLY STAPLES OF THEIR HIGH SCHOOL EXPERIENCE, THOSE ARE HIGHLIGHTS OF THEIR TIME. I THINK BEYOND JUST THE PRACTICAL SKILLS, THEIR CHARACTER IS BUILT UP FROM THE PROGRAM AS WELL. AND I WANT TO SAY -- MARK IS A PIONEER AT MAYFAIR. HAS BEEN REALLY GETTING THE WORD OUT ABOUT E SPORTS. HE HAS BEEN PROBABLY THE BIGGEST ADVOCATE FOR E SPORTS ON OUR CAMPUS AND HE HAS REALLY EXPANDED THE PROGRAM. MARK IS TREMENDOUS IN THAT SENSE. LEAH WHO IS RIGHT BEHIND MARK, LEAH SIMMONS, I BELIEVE SHE HAD SOMETHING TO SAY TODAY, BUT I THINK SHE MISSED THE COMMENT PERIOD.
I WILL SAY THAT LEAH IS IN AP ECONOMICS WITH ME AND AP LITERATURE WITH ME AND STILL FINDS THE TIME TO DO SKILLS USA.
ALL OF OUR STUDENTS WHO ARE IN THESE PROGRAMS ARE INCREDIBLE.
DILLON, I HAVE SEEN YOU AROUND CAMPUS AND WALKED PAST YOU AND I NEVER KNEW YOU WERE SO INVOLVED AND A PIONEER IN THAT SENSE.
I REALLY APPRECIATE WHAT YOU ARE WORKING ON WITH WIZ.
I AM REALLY PROUD TO GO TO SCHOOL WITH YOU.
[APPLAUSE]. >> I JUST WANT TO SAY MY DAUGHTERS HAVE PARTICIPATED IN CAL APS PROGRAM THE WHOLE STAFF
[02:25:04]
AND DR. SUE AND NOW BRAD, YOU ARE ON THE BOARD, AND IT IS CONTINUING TO GROW. IT IS VERY, VERY EXCITING.IT IS A BROAD RANGE IN WHICH THE KIDS CAN COME WITH VARYING INTERESTS. AND SO THIS IS THE FIRST I HAVE SEEN IN THIS. VERY EXCITED.
EVEN ME, I TEACH EARLY CHILDHOOD SPECIAL EDUCATION.
I BRING AI INTO THE CLASSROOM, ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE-TYPE THINGS IN THE CLASS, SO EVEN FROM THE YOUNGEST KID ALL THE WAY UP, THE EXPOSURE IS VERY, VERY IMPORTANT.
>> I JUST WANT TO SAY DITTO TO ALL OF THE COMMENTS AND CONGRATULATIONS, MARK. WE HOPE YOU CONTINUE TO DO EXCITING THINGS WHEREVER YOU WILL GO.
YOU HAVE SUCH A BRIGHT FUTURE AHEAD OF YOU.
>> I WILL JUST SAY ONE LAST COMMENT.
FIRST AND FOREMOST, YOU GUYS DO AN AWESOME JOB.
MRS. AZEVEDO AND MS. HOLDEN CAME TO MY OFFICE TO PRESENT THE INFORMATION I WAS LIKE, WOW. OKAY.
THIS IS WHAT I MEANT ABOUT THIS PLACE HAVING GREAT BONES.
I'M HOPING THAT, LOOK -- I'M HOPING THAT PEOPLE SEE THE AGENDA THAT EXISTS IN THIS DISTRICT AND START SPEAKING POSITIVE OF WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE.
I THINK IT IS THAT PARENT. THE MORE POSITIVE WE SPEAK OF WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE, THE MORE PEOPLE WILL BE -- YOU ARE GOING TO START SEEING -- AT LEAST THE STUFF I AM SEEING COMING FOR WHAT IS IN PLACE. I LOVE THE FACT THAT WE HAVE THIS VAST CTE PROGRAM AND I KNOW WE WERE GEEKING OUT IN MY OFFICE ABOUT THE POSSIBILITIES IN THE FUTURE ABOUT INTEGRATING OTHER SUBJECTS AND ALL OF THAT STUFF, LIKE WHAT YOU SEE AT HIGH-TECH HIGH AND SOME OF THESE OTHER PLACES.
WE LOOK FORWARD TO EXPANDING ON SOME OF THE WORK AND REALLY SUPPORTING IT. GREAT JOB.
I'M NOT SURE IF I CAN CONNECT THE SLIDES, BUT IT IS TOO LATE.
GOOD EVENING, EVERYONE. MY NAME IS LEAH SIMMONS, A SENIOR. I AM THE PRESIDENT OF SKILLS USA MAYFAIR HIGH SCHOOL CHAPTER. YOU MIGHT BE WONDERING WHAT IS SKILLS USA? SKILLS USA IS A NONPROFIT EDUCATION ASSOCIATION THAT WAS FOUNDED IN 1965.

SINCE FEBRUARY IS CAREER TECHNICAL EDUCATION MONTH.
ON MONDAY WE DID A CLEAN UP DRIVE TO HELP ON CAMPUS AND AFTER SCHOOL. THIS ACT OF KINDNESS BROUGHT SMILES TO OUR CUSTODIAN AND STAFF'S FACES.
WE WERE ALSO ABLE TO GET NON MEMBERS TO JOIN IN ON HELPING US CLEAN. TUESDAY WE POSTED FRAMEWORK STORIES OF MEMBERS' EXPERIENCES WITH SKILLS USA ON THE INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT. AND YESTERDAY WE GAVE RECOGNITION TO OUR ACTIVE MEMBERS IN LINE WITH
[02:30:01]
RECOGNIZE -- RECOGNITION DAY. WE ARE FORTUNATE WE HAVE SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS, ADMINISTRATORS IN OUR SCHOOL AND LEADERS IN OUR SCHOOL'S DISTRICT WHO ARE SUPPORTIVE OF OUR ENDEAVORS.THESE ACTIVITIES WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN POSSIBLE WITHOUT EVERYONE'S SUPPORT. IN SKILLS USA, WE ARE UNITED AS ONE AND ALTHOUGH I'M SAD MY SECONDARY EDUCATION IS COMING TO A CLOSE, I KNOW THAT I AM PREPARED TO FACE THE NEW CHALLENGES WITH THE LESSONS I HAVE LEARNED FROM SKILLS USA.
THE TIME IS NOW FOR ME TO FACE THESE CHALLENGES HEAD ON BECAUSE I AM WELL PREPARED. THE TIME IS NOT ONLY MINE, BUT ALSO YOURS. SKILLS USA, OUR TIME IS NOW.
[10. ACTION]
>> THANK YOU FOR YOUR COMMENTS. WE ARE GOING TO MOVE ON NOW TO APPROVAL OF MINUTES. THE NEXT ITEM OF BUSINESS IS APPROVAL OF MINUTES. DO I HAVE A MOTION TO APPROVE
AGENDA 10.1.1. >> MOTION TO APPROVE THE
>> AT LAST MONTH'S MEETING THERE WAS A CORRECTION BY DR. SUE LAST MONTH TO CORRECT THE MOTION TO NOMINATE MR. CRIHFIELD.
AFTER STAFF REVIEWED THE VIDEO OF THE ITEM IT WAS DETERMINED THAT I MADE THE SECOND AND NOT ARMSTRONG.
QUESTIONS? >> WE CHECKED IT OVER AND OVER AND THAT'S ACCURATE. THANK YOU --
>> THANK YOU SO MUCH. QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? HEARING NONE LET'S TAKE ROLL CALL PLEASE.
>> DO I HAVE A MOTION TO APPROVE AGENDA ITEM 10.1.2, APPROVAL OF MINUTES FEBRUARY 2ND, 2023, SPECIAL MEETING?
I MEAN, I WILL SECOND SINCE YOU MOVED IT.
>> MOVED BY DR. EL MESS -- DR. ELHESSEN.
>> YES. >> AND SECONDED BY MS. ARMSTRONG. THANK YOU.
QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? HEARING NONE PLEASE TAKE ROLL
>> I. >> MOVING ON TO CONSENT AGENDA I MAKE A MOTION TO APPROVE AND REMOVE 10.3.1.1 AND --
>> SO THIS IS ABOUT THE CALENDAR WE ESTABLISHED FOR THE BOARD MEETINGS. WE R-LSZ WE DID -- WE REALIZE WE DID IT IN HASTE -- OH, GOT IT. MY FAULT.
GO AHEAD. >> AND DO I HAVE A SECOND TO
APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA? >> SECOND.
TAKE ROLL CALL PLEASE. >> MR. MENDOZA?
WE -- >> A FIRST AND A SECOND AND THEN
DISCUSS. >> WE JUST NEED TO GET A MOTION
THE NEXT ITEM OF BUSINESS ARE THE ITEMS WITHHELD.
>> WITHHELD ITEMS. THE NEXT ITEM OF BUSINESS IS THE ITEMS WITHHELD FROM THE CONSENT AGENDA.
THE FIRST AGENDA ITEM WITHHELD IS AGENDA ITEM 10.3.1.1, CALENDAR BOARD OF EDUCATION MEETINGS.
DO I HAVE A MOTION? >> SO MOVED.
[02:35:02]
>> I BEAT YOU. >> MR. CRIHFIELD SECOND.
THANK YOU. QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS?
I KNOW WHEN WE MADE THE CALENDAR IT WAS PRETTY QUICK.
ON MAY 11TH, THERE IS AN EVENT THAT I THINK THE BOARD IS TYPICALLY ATTENDED, THE COMMUNITY FAMILY GUIDANCE CENTER HAS AN ANNUAL EVENT. AS WE ENGAGE IN THE COMMUNITY I THINK IT WOULD BE GREAT FOR US TO CONTINUE OUR PARTICIPATION AND ATTEND. I WOULD LIKE TO FOR THE BOARD'S CONSIDERATION INSTEAD OF MAY 11TH, WE GO TO MAY 9TH.
I KNOW THE SECOND MEETING THAT MONTH IS A RETREAT.
I THINK IT IS IMPORTANT WE DO HAVE A MEETING I RECOMMEND MAY 9TH AS A SUBSTITUTE, BUT I'M OPEN TO ANY OTHER --
>> I DON'T RECALL THAT BEING A REGULAR MEETING FOR THE BOARD TO ATTEND. CORRECT ME IF I'M WRONG.
DO YOU, RENITA? >> I HAVE MAY 11TH, AND MAY 25TH. THAT'S WHAT I HAVE.
>> RIGHT. DID WE USUALLY, AS A BOARD,
ATTEND THE COMMUNITY FAIR? >> WE ATTENDED -- IF WE CHOOSE
BUT IT HAS NEVER CONFLICTED WITH THE BOARD MEETING.
>> I BELIEVE I HAVE ATTENDED. THERE HADN'T BEEN A CONFLICT.
I'M IN AGREEMENT. I THINK IT IS SOMETHING THAT IF WE CHOOSE TO GO TO, WE CAN MOVE THAT DAY AND IF EVERYBODY IS IN AGREEMENT, THEN WE CAN JUST CHANGE THE DAY -- WHICH WAS IT?
>> MAY 11TH. I KNOW TUESDAY MEETING MAY 9TH MIGHT WORK. I KNOW WHEN WE MADE THE ANNUAL CALENDAR WE MADE IT PRETTY QUICK.
I THINK IT IS JUST IMPORTANT AND IN THE FUTURE WHEN WE MAKE OUR BOARD MEETINGS, WE DO AS MUCH AS WE CAN TO STILL ENGAGE IN THE COMMUNITY AND MAKE OURSELVES AVAILABLE FOR THAT, BUT OBVIOUSLY OUR MEETINGS TAKE PRIORITY, BUT AS WE SET OUT A CALENDAR FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR, I THINK MAKING AMENDMENTS FROM TIME TO TIME MIGHT COME IN HANDY.
>> AND WHILE WE ARE TALKING ABOUT ACCOMMODATING FOR COMMUNITY EVENTS THIS FEBRUARY 2 A 3RD -- 23RD IS THE SAME AS
>> THE 23RD. >> IT IS THE FAIR AT MAYFAIR.
>> THANK YOU FOR BRINGING THAT UP.
>> WHY DON'T WE LOOK AT THE DATES.
IT IS GETTING MORE CONFUSING. I KNOW MAY 9TH WE HAVE OUR CAL APS MEETING. OR NO WE MOVED IT TO THE SECOND.
SO WE ARE SUPPOSED TO HAVE TWO MEETINGS IN MAY.
YOU WANT THE 11TH AND WHEN WOULD BE THE SECOND ONE DR. A -- DR. DRATI? I DON'T HAVE THE CALENDAR.
>> I BELIEVE THE MOTION MR. KRIS STOW -- CRISTO IS MAY 9TH.
THE ONLY THING IS A PTA MEETING. I CAN CONSTITUTE THAT AND DOING
ONE BOARD MEETING. >> THAT IS THE RETREAT, THE QUARTERLY RETREAT. THE REASON I WANTED TO BRING IT UP NOW IS IT IS IN MAY AND WE HAVE TIME.
MAYBE IT IS WORTH WHILE TO SIT DOWN AND GO THROUGH THE -- --
>> YEAH. LET'S DO THAT AND INSTEAD OF TRYING TO FIGURE IT OUT HERE LET'S PUT TIME ASIDE.
>> THE 11TH AND 25TH -- [INAUDIBLE].
>> SO IF WE ARE PLANNING ON GOING THROUGH THE CALENDAR, AT THAT TIME WOULD YOU WANT US TO PRESENT TO YOU ITEMS LIKE -- YOU KNOW, LIKE I HAVE BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT AND OPEN HOUSE AND I HAVE A MEETING HERE. THAT'S A CONFLICT FOR ME.
DO YOU WANT US TO PRESENT THOSE THINGS TO YOU?
>> YES. SINCE I'M LOOKING ANYWAY, IF YOU HAVE CONFLICTS AND THINGS LIKE THAT THAT YOU SEE, LET ME KNOW RIGHT AWAY SO I CAN MAKE SOME SUGGESTIONS.
>> SO FOR IMMEDIATE CORRECTION WE NEED TO DECIDE WHAT TO DO FOR FEBRUARY TO ATTEND THE OPEN HOUSE AT MAYFAIR.
IN FEBRUARY DO YOU WANT TO JUST MAKE IT IS ONE MEETING OR IS THAT SUPPOSED TO BE -- DO WE MEET ONCE IN THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY OR MEET THE 16TH? THEY ARE KIND OF BACK TO BACK.
>> I WOULD SAY IT IS IMPORTANT WE MEET STILL.
[02:40:01]
OBVIOUSLY I WOULD LIKE THERE TO BE AN ACCOMMODATION, BUT IF THERE IS NO ACCOMMODATION POSSIBLE, LIKE BRAD SAID, OUR MEETINGS TAKE PRIORITY. UNFORTUNATELY WE WOULD HAVE TO MISS THE FAIR IF THERE IS NO OTHER WAY TO DO THIS.IF THERE IS, I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR IT.
>> LIKE I SAID, WE CAN MEET ON THE 16TH.
>> WE HAVE TO SEE IF THAT DATE IS AVAILABLE.
>> IT IS JUST ANOTHER THURSDAY, BUT I'M JUST SAYING, IF YOU WANT TO KEEP THE 23RD OPEN TPO*R MA T THE FOLLOWING WEEK OR WE CAN
SKIP IT. >> WE DO NEED A MEETING.
THERE ARE THINGS TIME-WISE WE NEED TO HAVE LIKE A SCHOOL SAFETY PLAN MODEL. LET'S SEE -- IT DOESN'T HAVE TO BE THURSDAY. WE CAN SEE IF WE CAN DO A WEDNESDAY OR SOMETHING. SEND ME YOUR CONFLICTS AND MAYBE I WILL WORK ON THAT TOMORROW AND TRY TO GET SOMETHING ON THE FRIDAY MEMO AND GET A THUMBS UP OVER THE WEEKEND AND THEN WE WILL BRING IT TO THE NEXT BOARD MEETING.
>> WHAT WAS THE SPECIFIC MOTION? >> WE ARE GOING TO -- WE ARE NOT
MAKING A DECISION RIGHT NOW. >> TABLE IT?
>> I MAKE A MOTION TO TABLE THE ITEM.
CAN WE HAVE ROLL CALL PLEASE? >> MR. MENDOZA.
THE NEXT ITEM, AGENDA ITEM, THE NEXT WITHHELD ITEM --
>> MS. GARZA THERE WAS NO OTHER AGENDA ITEMS SO WE CAN MOVE ON
TO THE NEXT. >> SORRY ABOUT THAT.
THERE IS AN EXTRA HERE. THANK YOU.
[11. INFORMATION ITEMS]
INFORMATION ON THE ITEMS. DO WE HAVE ANY QUESTIONS REGARDING THE INFORMATIONAL ITEMS THIS EVENING? HEARING NONE WE WILL GO ON TO BOARD STUDENT MEMBER/STAFF COMMENTS. IT IS TIME FOR COMMENTS FROM DR.>> I HAD COMMENTS, BUT I WAS GOING TO POSTPONE THEM.
I THINK THERE WAS THINGS I WAS GOING TO TALK ABOUT, THE WILLIAMS REPORT, BUT WE WILL HOLD THAT UNTIL THE 23RD.
>> THANK YOU. BOARD OF EDUCATION MEMBERS, BOARD MEMBER OF COMMUNICATION AND REPORTS.
LET'S START WITH MR. MENDOZA. >> GOOD EVENING, EVERYONE.
SO I HAVE HAD A PRETTIES ABOUT FEW WEEKS SINCE THE 19TH.
I ATTENDED DIVISION NIGHTS. I LEARNED A GREAT DEAL ABOUT SOMERSET HIGH SCHOOL AND BELLFLOWER HIGH SCHOOL.
THE STUDENTS OF EACH SCHOOL ARE MY CONSTITUENTS AND I CAN DO A BETTER JOB IN REPRESENTING THEIR INTERESTS.
I WAS REALLY HAPPY TO GET TO LEARN MORE ABOUT WHAT THEIR DAY-TO-DAY LIVES LOOKED LIKE ON THEIR CAMPUSES.
I LEARNED ABOUT HOW THE CREDITING PROGRAMS WORK.
IT WAS INFORMATIONAL FOR ME. AND I MET WITH TIA EWING TO LEARN MORE ABOUT THE CAMPUS I KNOW THE LEAST -- OR I KNEW THE LEAST ABOUT BECAUSE SHE WAS EXTREMELY INFORMATIVE AND SHE ENLIGHTENED ME ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS AT LOS FLORES.
WE AGREE THAT LOS FLORES IS THE BEST KEPT SECRET.
MY COMPLEMENTS. I WAS IMPRESSED BY THEIR SCHOOL.
IT WAS A FIRST MUSICAL SINCE THE PANDEMIC HIT.
THE PRODUCTION QUALITY WAS STELLAR AND THE CAST WAS FANTASTIC AND THE SHOW WAS INCREDIBLY ENDEARING.
A SHOUT OUT TO BRIAN SAUPB TKERS AND THE TECH CREW AND THE WONDERFUL CAST OF STUDENTS AND I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE "SISTER ACT" AT BELLFLOWER. MY COMPLIMENTS TO THE MARINERS IN SHOW TIME PROGRAM. THEIR INSTRUCTOR HAD TO STEP AWAY FROM INSTRUCTION FOR SOME TIME FOR PERSONAL MATTERS AND THE ELECTED BOARDS OF THOSE PROGRAMS, THE STUDENTS WHO ARE IN THOSE PROGRAMS STEPPED UP AND THEY ACTUALLY CREATED LESSON PLANS FOR THE YOUNGER STUDENTS. THEY ARE ALREADY LOADED WITH AP CLASSES. IF THEIR LEADERS IN THEIR PROGRAMS, THEY ARE INVOLVED STUDENTS.
THEY HAD ENORMOUS AMOUNTS OF SCHOOL SCHOOLWORK AND THEY CREATED LESSON PLANS. THEY TOOK ONE NOR -- ENORMOUS AMOUNTS OF WORK AND I BELIEVE THEY DESERVE TO BE RECOGNIZED FOR BEING BOTH TEACHER AND STUDENT AT THE SAME TIME.
[02:45:04]
BEFORE I SPEAK ON PERSONAL PROJECTS I I WANT TO TALK ABOUT AN OPPORTUNITY FOR CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS.THE STATE SUPERINTENDENT OF PUBLIC ININSTRUCTION IS LOOKING FOR NEW APPLICANTS TO SERVE ON THE STATE YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL. MEMBERS OF THE COUNCIL WOULD ADVISE EDUCATIONAL POLICY MAKERS BY USING THE PERSPECTIVE AS STUDENTS AND HELP SHAPE THE LAW THAT'S COME OUT OF SACRAMENTO.
APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN THIS MONTH AND I ENCOURAGE ALL OF YOU TO VISIT MY INSTAGRAM PAGE TO FIND A LINK TO LEARN MORE INFORMATION. ON TO SOME PERSONAL PROJECTS I WAS INVOLVED IN. LAST MONTH I GAVE YOU AN UPDATE ON MAYFAIR UNICEF'S PROJECT. WE RAISED A LITTLE MORE MONEY, BUT OUR CAMPAIGN IS STILL PRETTY SLOW.
WE HAVE STARTING TO COLLABORATE WITH OUR ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR.
HOPEFULLY THIS WILL BE A SCHOOL WIDE CAMPAIGN IN COMING WEEKS.
I KNOW I WAS TALKING ABOUT THE CARPENTER HOUSE MUSEUM PROJECT THAT I WAS WORKING ON WITH THE HISTORY CLUB AND I HAVE NEWS TO REPORT. THE CITY COUNCIL WILL APPROVE OR GIVE US AUTHORIZATION TO GO INTO THE PROJECT.
I AM HOPING FOR A YES VOTE. IF THEY GIVE US THE YES VOTE WE WILL COLLABORATE WITH L.A. COUNTY LIBRARY.
WE WILL USE THEIR TECHNOLOGIES LIKE SCANNERS AND PRINTERS TO REALLY MAKE OUR WEBSITE AS PROFESSIONAL AS POSSIBLE AND PROVIDE THAT RESOURCE OF LOCAL HISTORY TO BELLFLOWER RESIDENTS.
LASTLY, AS FAR AS THE ONGOING LABOR NEGOTIATIONS GO, I WOULD LIKE TO MAKE IT CLEAR I HAVE NO MORE KNOWLEDGE THAN ANY OF YOU DO AND I AM NOT PART OF THE NEGOTIATIONS PROCESS.
HOWEVER, BECAUSE I HAVE NO OFFICIAL STAKE IN THOSE CONVERSATIONS, I AM A LITTLE FREER THAN MY COLLEAGUES TO SHARE MY VIEW ON THIS ISSUE. THIS PROCESS HAS GONE ON FOR A LONGTIME NOW AND EVERY TEACHER HAS EXPRESSED SOME LEVEL OF PESSIMISM ABOUT THE OUTCOME OF NEGOTIATIONS.
THAT WAS DISHEARTENING TO ME. I SPOKE TO A FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHER AT BELLFLOWER HIGH SCHOOL DURING VISION NIGHT.
HE SAID HE WANTED TO RETIRE SOON TO SPEND TIME WITH HIS GRANDCHILDREN. LOOMING OVER OUR CONVERSATION WAS THE QUESTION OF WOULD HE BE ABLE TO AFFORD IT? WOULD HE BE ABLE TO RETIRE AND LIVE WITH ENOUGH MONEY TO SPEND TIME AND RAISE HIS GRAND -- GRANDCHILD? THIS IS AN EXTREMELY IMPORTANT ISSUE.
I KNOW WHEN DR. DRATI ARRIVED AT THE DISTRICT HE MADE CLEAR DURING OUR BOARD RETREAT WHEN WE HAD THE FORMER LONG BEACH SCHOOL DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT PRESENT, HE SAID LONG BEACH ACCOMPLISHED GREAT THINGS, BUT HERE AT BELLFLOWER WE CAN BEAT LONG BEACH AND BECOME A MODEL FOR OTHER DISTRICTS IN THE AREA.
IF WE WANT TO REALLY BE A MODEL FOR DISTRICTS IN THE AREA HAVE .
THAT JUST MAKES SENSE. IF YOU WANT TO BE BETTER THAN OTHER DISTRICTS, OUR PAY HAS TO BE AT PAR OR BETTER THAN OTHER DISTRICTS AROUND US. FROM THE NUMBERS I HAVE SEEN, IT IS PRETTY GRIM. SO I'M CONFIDENT -- [LAUGHTER].
I AM CONFIDENT FROM THE UM DATES I HAVE ON -- UPDATES FROM THE GENERAL POSITIVITY AND THE TEACHER ASSOCIATION THAT THE NEGOTIATIONS ARE IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION AND ALL WE CAN DO IS HOPE THAT THIS WORKS OUT AND LIKE DR. DRATI WAS TALKING ABOUT, THEORY OF ACTION, STUDENT PERFORMANCE IS DIRECTLY LINKED TO THE TEACHER'S ABILITY TO PERFORM IN THE CLASSROOM.
OUR TEACHERS GIVE OUR STUDENTS -- THEY GIVE US CHROME BOOKS AND THEY HAVE TO WALK AROUND THROUGH THE HALLS AND MAKE SURE THAT WE ARE NOT GAMING.
I'M SERIOUS. PEOPLE GAME IN CLASS.
I KNOW WE HAD TEACHERS REQUEST THINGS LIKE -- WHAT IS IT CALLED? PROGRAMS WHERE THEY CAN KEEP TRACK OF WHAT STUDENTS ARE WORKING ON? THAT'S SOMETHING THEY EMPHASIZED AN INTEREST IN.
I KNOW MAYFAIR HIGH SCHOOL PILOTED GO GUARDIAN.
THERE WAS NO WAY TO CHECK WHAT THEY WERE DOING.
I KNOW MS. PARKS USED THAT DURING MY QUIZES WHEN I WAS IN HER CLASS. I DO HAVE ACADEMIC INTEGRITY.
DON'T WORRY. OUR TEACHERS WORK HARD AND THEY HAVE LESS SCHOOLS THAN THE SURROUNDING DISTRICTS.
IF WE REALLY WANT TO SET HIGH GOALS FOR OURSELVES AND BE IDOLISTIC, SAYING WE WILL BEAT LONG BEACH AND BE A GREAT
[02:50:01]
DISTRICT WE HAVE TO START WITH TEACHER PAY.THAT'S MY VIEW EVEN THOUGH I HAVE NO ACTUAL OFFICIAL ROLE IN THE NEGOTIATION PROCESS. IF YOU ARE NOT HERE WITH AN ASSOCIATION -- IS EVERYBODY HERE WITH A TEACHER ASSOCIATION.
FOR PEOPLE AT HOME, YOU DON'T REALIZE IT, BUT THEIR CAFETERIA IS PACKED RIGHT NOW WITH OTHER MEMBERS OF THE TEACHER ASSOCIATION. I DON'T KNOW IF THEY ARE STILL HERE BECAUSE IT WAS A LONGER MEETING.
BUT WE -- THE STAFF AND I -- I SAY I BECAUSE I WAS LITERALLY PUSHING THESE CHAIRS DURING 4 P.M. AND 6 P.M. AND WHEELED OVER A BUNCH OF CHAIRS AND WE SET IT UP FOR THE OVERFLOW AND WE SET UP A VIEW SONIC IN THERE. PEOPLE ARE HERE AND PEOPLE ARE WATCHING. IT IS NOT JUST THE PEOPLE WHO CARE ABOUT THIS ISSUE. THAT'S IT FROM ME AND THANKS FOR
LISTENING, GUYS. >> BOARD MEMBER ARMSTRONG?
>> HELLO AND, AGAIN, THANKS FOR COMING OUT TONIGHT TO WATCH YOUR BOARD WORK TOGETHER. A FEW ACTIVITIES I DID, I ATTENDED THE OUTGOING CEREMONY FOR BELLFLOWER'S MAYOR.
HE WAS -- HE WAS HONORED AND SOME OF THE BOARD MEMBERS FROM BELLFLOWER, WE PRESENTED HIM WITH A CERTIFICATE FOR HIS WORK AND I DID MY NORMAL MEETING WITH THEM.
I DIDN'T HAVE TO GO TO IT. WE HAD IT VIRTUALLY BECAUSE IT WAS ALL THE WAY IN PALMDALE THIS TIME.
I ATTENDED THE NAVIGATION NIGHT AT BELLFLOWER HIGH SCHOOL.
I HAVE A NEW ADVENTURE THAT I HAVE STARTED.
I AM WHAT IS CALLED A WELLOW. I LEARN ABOUT WATER.
SO IT IS WATER EDUCATION. WATER IS LIQUID GOLD.
I AM GOING ALL UP AND DOWN THE STATE LEARNING ABOUT THE STORAGE, THE GROUND WATER AND THE RIVERS AND HOW THEY -- HOW IT ALL TIES IN TO CALIFORNIA. URBAN DEVELOPMENT BECAUSE NO MATTER WHAT WE NEED WATER. I HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD AND BELLFLOWER TO LEARN ABOUT THEIR WATER SYSTEM, AND THEY ARE EXCITED TO BE A PARTNER WITH ME AND HELP ME LEARN MORE ABOUT THE WATER SYSTEMS. IT IS EXCITING, BUT IT IS A LOT. AND THAT'S IT FOR ME.
>> THANK YOU, BOARD MEMBER ARMSTRONG.
DR. EL -- DR. ELHESSEN? >> THANK YOU AND WELCOME, EVERYONE. I ALSO ATTENDED BELLFLOWER NAVIGATION NIGHT. IT WAS A REALLY GOOD PROGRAM.
I JUST WANT TO UPDATE ABOUT SOME CAL AP CTE PROGRAM.
WE ARE DOING A FILMING AND VIDEO PROJECT THAT STARTED ON FEBRUART BELLFLOWER HIGH SCHOOL. COURSES WILL BE FILMED.
THE FILM WILL TAKE PLACE FROM THE 8 TO THE 15TH.
TEACHERS WILL BE INTERVIEWED TO CREATE A 3-MINUTE VIDEO FOR EACH PATHWAY IN THE DISTRICT. I ALREADY STARTED RECEIVING SOME ON YOUTUBE. IT WILL BE FILMED IN THE FALL WHEN THEY MOVE INTO THE NEW BUILDING.
AND SKILLS USA. IT WAS THE SKILLS USA REGIONAL COMPETITION FOR OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS.
BELLFLOWER HAS 16 STUDENTS COMPETING IN THE LEADERSHIP AND SKILLS AREAS OF MEDICAL ASSISTING AND DESIGN.
SOME HAVE THREE STUDENTS COME PETTING IN TELECOMMUNICATIONS AND CABLING AND ROBOTICS AND AUTOMATION TECHNOLOGY AND MAYFAIR HAS 35 STUDENTS IN THE LEADERSHIP AND SKILL AREAS OF OUTSTANDING CHAPTER, PROMOTIONAL BULLETIN AND AMERICAN SPIRIT AND JOB SKILLS DEMONSTRATION, ENGINEERING AND EMPLOYMENT
[02:55:06]
APPLICATION PROCESSES AND ENGINEERING CHALLENGE CREED, CO2 DESIGNS AND ARCHITECTURAL DRAFTING AND OTHERS AS THEY CONTINUE ON. WE WILL HAVE RESULTS TO SEE WHICH STUDENTS QUALIFY TO BE MOVING TO SKILLS USA STATE COMPETITION WHICH WILL BE OVER SPRING BREAK APRIL 12TH TO THE 16TH. I ALSO WANTED TO MENTION THAT THIS IS NOT TALKED ABOUT TOO MUCH, BUT IT IS A GREAT PROGRAM THREW KAISER PERMANENTE AND CORRECT ME IF I SAY IT WRONG, THE HYPOCRITE -- HYPOCRITISE CIRCLE.KAISER HELD THE CIRCLE ORIENTATION NIGHT FOR 23 OF THE BELLFLOWER MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS.
IT CONSISTS OF FIVE EVENTS AND ALL SPONSORED BY KAISER PERMANENTE. BELLFLOWER MIDDLE SCHOOL APPLIED FOR THE PROGRAM, AND THIS IS THE ONLY MIDDLE SCHOOL THAT PROVIDED THE CIRCLE IN THE KAISER DOWNEY AREA.
ONE SCHOOL IS SELECTED EACH YEAR AND THIS IS THE SECOND TIME BELLFLOWER MIDDLE SCHOOL HAS BEEN SELECTED.
THE NEXTY -- THE NEXT EVENT IS FEBRUARY 15TH.
THE REASON I BRING THIS UP IS IT IS A GREAT PROGRAM FOR OUR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS TO START TO VENTURE INTO OPPORTUNITIES IN THE MEDICAL FIELD. AND LASTLY I WANTED TO TALK ABOUT WE HAD TALKED ABOUT THIS WITH ONE OF MY FORMER LYNNWOOD BOARD MEMBERS ABOUT THE EARLY CHILDHOOD PROGRAM.
I REALIZE THAT BELLFLOWER HAS AN EARLY LINK PROGRAM.
THE BELLFLOWER PROGRAM IS A PROGRAM THAT SERVES 0 TO 5 YEARS OF AGE. IT CAN SERVE UP TO 24 STUDENTS AND THEIR PARENTS AND/OR CAREGIVERS.
IT IS DESIGNED TO HELP CHILDREN AND THEIR PARENTS PARTICIPATE IN ACTIVITY THAT'S DEVELOP COGNITIVE, SOCIAL, EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL SKILLS. CURRENTLY AS OF TODAY, WE HAVE 20 FAMILIES WHO HAVE COMPLETED THE APPLICATION PROCESS AND HAVE JOINED THE PROGRAM. IT IS OFFERED FOUR DAYS A WEEK FOR THREE HOURS. PARENTS HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SELECT THEIR LEVEL OF INVOLVEMENT AND THEIR SCHEDULED PERMITS. I AM LOSING MY VOICE.
EACH MONTH ON A DESIGNATED FRIDAY THEY WILL PLAN A STEM-RELATED ACTIVITY. I WANTED TO SHARE IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED THERE ARE SLOTS AVAILABLE ALSO IN HONOR OF BLACK HISTORY MONTH I WANTED TO READ A POEM BY MAYA ANGELO.
THIS IS PART OF HER POEM "STILL I RISE." SHE STATES, YOU MAY SHOOT ME WITH YOUR WORDS, YOU MAY CUT ME WITH YOUR EYES, YOU MAY KILL ME WITH YOUR HATEFULNESS, BUT STILL , LIKE AIR, I WILL RISE. THANK YOU.
HOPE EVERYONE HAS A HAPPY VALENTINE'S NEXT WEEK AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OUR STUDENTS IN REGARD TO THE SINGING VALENTINES THANK YOU. [APPLAUSE].
>> THANK YOU, DR. ELHESSEN. MS. STEWART.
>> I AM A LITTLE UNDER THE WEATHER TONIGHT SO BEAR WITH ME.
IN THE PAST FEW WEEKS I ATTENDED A LOT OF AWESOME EVENTS IN THE COMMUNITY. I ATTENDED VISION NIGHT AT SOMERSET HIGH SCHOOL. STUDENT BOARD MEMBER MENDOZA WAS ALSO THERE. I MET WITH PRINCIPAL HIGGINS AND HE GAVE ME A TOUR OF THE CAMPUS AND THE CLASSROOMS. I LOVED THE PROGRAM I SAW THERE. SOMETIMES THE CONTINUATION SCHOOLS ARE THOUGHT OF IN A CERTAIN WAY AND THAT'S DEFINITELY NOT WHAT I SAW. I THOUGHT IT WAS AMAZING.
I LOVE THE WORKSHOP. THAT WAS MY FAVORITE PART.
I THOUGHT IT WAS INNOVATIVE AND COOL.
I LOVE THAT THEY ARE ABLE TO DO PE AND THEY CAN BUILD AND STUDY ROBOTICS AND THE CORE CURRICULUM WAS COOL BECAUSE THEY INTEGRATED A LOT OF TECHNOLOGY INTO THEIR CLASSROOM.
I REALLY APPRECIATED SEEING THAT.
I MET THEIR COUNSELOR AND WELLNESS CENTER AND IT WAS BEAUTIFUL. I ENJOYED MY NIGHT WITH THEM.
I OFFEND -- ATTENDED NAVIGATION NIGHT.
PRINCIPAL LUNDGREN WENT WITH US TO TOUR THE CAMPUS AND WE SAW PROGRAMS IN EFFECT. WE SAW A LOT OF POSITIVE THINGS ON CAMPUS. WE SAW THINGS THAT COULD BE BETTER AND DEFINITELY LOOKING AT THE CLASSROOMS AND THE SCIENCE LAB I CAN SEE WHERE WE CAN MAKE IMPROVEMENTS IN SOME OF THOSE AREAS. WE SAW A LOT OF THE CTE AND CAL APS IN MOTION AND I LOVE THE HANDS ON SKILL CLASSES THE MOST.
I LOVE THE AUTO SHOP, THE CULINARY ARTS PROGRAM WAS AMAZING. THE FOOD WAS DELICIOUS.
[03:00:04]
THE HEALTH, SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY WAS AWESOME AS WELL.WE VISITED THE WELLNESS CENTER AND SPENT TIME WITH THE COUNSELOR AND GOT A LOT OF GOOD FEEDBACK.
AND I ENJOYED SEEING OUR COACHES REPRESENTING AND JUST HAVING STATIONS FOR THE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS THAT WERE ATTENDING THAT NIGHT TO PROMOTE THEIR PROGRAMS. THAT WAS AWESOME TOO. I HAD A MEETING WITH DR. DRATI AND THE DEAN OF CLIMATE AND CULTURE MRS. CASEY.
AND WE COLLABORATED ON HOW WE CAN CULTIVATE THE BEST CLIMATE THAT WE CAN IN OUR DISTRICT. AND JUST TRYING TO BRAINSTORM AND COME UP WITH IDEAS. AND I LOOK FORWARD TO MORE COLLABORATION WITH OUR EDUCATIONAL PARTNERS IN THE FUTURE. I ATTENDED "SHREK, THE MUSICAL" AND THAT WAS AWESOME. I THINK MR. SAUNDERS DID AN AMAZING JOB WITH THE STUDENTS. I LOVED THE PERFORMANCE.
THE KIDS WERE SO INSPIRATIONAL AND THEY ARE JUST SUCH TALENTED ACTORS AND SINGERS. I JOKED WITH MY DAD -- I TRIED TO GET MY DAUGHTER TO GO AND SHE WOULDN'T GO.
I TRIED TO GET MY DAD TO GO AND HE WOULDN'T GO.
I SENT VIDEOS AND I SAID YOU SHOULD HAVE COME AND THEY SAID, WOW, THEY ARE AMAZING AND THEY WERE.
IT WAS ENTERTAINING AND THE SETS WERE BEAUTIFUL AND THE DESIGNS.
I WAS GIVEN A TOUR OF THE DRAGON AT THE END BY -- IT WAS CREATED BY A FORMER STUDENT IN THE CAL APS PROGRAM.
AND IT WAS REALLY COOL THE WAY THEY MADE THIS DRAGON AND SO I TOOK PICTURES AND WAS GEEKED OUT AS WELL.
IT WAS VERY INNOVATIVE. I REALLY APPRECIATED IT BECAUSE IT IS EDUCATING MYSELF AND THEN I CAN COME BACK TO THE COMMUNITY AND EDUCATE YOU GUYS AS WELL AND STAY IN TOUCH WITH WHAT IS HAPPENING. I ATTENDED PTA COUNCIL.
IT IS NICE TO HEAR ABOUT THE UPCOMING EVENTS.
I IMPLORE YOU TO BECOME MEMBERS AND TO REALLY, LIKE, WORK WITH THEM AND SUPPORT OUR FAMILIES AND KIDS AT THEIR NEXT MEETING THEY ARE HONORING 24 STUDENTS FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING ARTWORK AND GIVING OUT AWARDS INCLUDING THE AWARD OF EXCELLENCE AND THE AWARD OF MERIT AND THE AWARD OF RECOGNITION.
I WILL CONTINUE TO PROMOTE PTA. I TOLD YOU GUYS I WILL BE THERE FOR THEM AND I HOPE WE CAN GET MORE INVOLVEMENT FROM OUR COMMUNITY. AND BECAUSE I HAVE BEEN SICK THE LAST WEEK AND I -- I DON'T WATCH A LOT OF TV, BUT HAVE I BEEN WATCHING A LOT OF TV, MORE THAN USUAL.
I WANT TO SAY AND MY HEART AND THOUGHTS GO OUT TO THE PEOPLE IN TURKEY. IT IS TRAGIC WHAT IS HAPPENING.
I HAVE BEEN CRYING FOR PRETTY MUCH A WEEK AND LIVING IN CALIFORNIA I JUST -- IT REMINDS ME THAT WE ALSO NEED TO MAKE SURE THAT WE HAVE QUALITY EARTHQUAKE PROCEDURES AND THAT WE HAVE THOSE IN PLACE FOR OUR STUDENTS AND STAFF AS WELL.
I JUST WANT TO KEEP THAT IN MIND FOR THE FUTURE.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. [APPLAUSE].
>> THANK YOU BOARD MEMBER STEWART.
BOARD MEMBER CRIHFIELD? >> IT IS ALWAYS HARD TO FOLLOW AMY. LIKE MY FELLOW BOARD MEMBERS, THERE ARE A LOT OF EVENTS IN THE PAST COUPLE WEEKS.
I WILL JUST -- I DON'T HAVE VERY MUCH THUNDER LEFT WITH EVENTS HERE, BUT FIRST OF ALL, THANK YOU ALL FOR BEING HERE AND BEING ENGAGED AND SITTING THROUGH A LONGER BOARD MEETING.
I KNOW THE BOARD APPRECIATES IT. AS FAR AS WHAT'S BEEN GOING THE PAST COUPLE WEEKS. DID GO TOTD EX-- TO THE EXIT CEREMONY WITH FELLOW COLLEAGUE ARMSTRONG FORAY DU -- FOR RAY DU TTON BELLFLOWER NAVIGATION NIGHT WAS AWESOME.
LIKE MY COLLEAGUE STEWART SAID WE TOOK A TOUR AROUND THE CAMPUS AND SAW SOME THINGS THAT COULD BE IMPROVED, BUT ALSO A LOT OF REALLY COOL THINGS. LISA AND HER TEAM WITH CAL APS, THOSE FACILITIES ARE AMAZING AND IT IS GREAT TO SEE ALL OF THOSE.
THE "SHREK" MUSICAL WAS GREAT AND I DID GET MY DAUGHTER TO GO WITH ME, BUT SHE IS YOUNGER SO I CAN MAKE HER GO.
SHE HAD A BLAST. I DIDN'T GET THE COOL GEEKED OUT PICTURES LIKE AMY WITH HER HEAD IN THE DRAGON, BUT IT WAS REALLY FUN TO DO STILL. I WENT TO THE LAKEWOOD SIR OPTIMIST LIVE YOUR DREAM EVENT AND A PLUG FOR THEM, THEY HAVE THE LAKEWOOD RUN COMING UP AND IT SUPPORTS THE LIVE YOUR DREAM EVENT THAT GOES TOWARD SCHOLARSHIPS FOR WOMEN WHO HAVE BEEN VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AND IT HELPS THE LAKEWOOD SHERIFF STATION. IT IS REALLY GREAT.
IT IS A 5K. IT IS NOT DIFFICULT TO GO OUT THERE AND RUN AROUND THE CITY. IT IS REALLY FUN.
THE FOLLOWING DAY I WENT TO SOMERSET HIGH SCHOOL AND I GOT TO FLY SOME DRONES WITH THE STUDENTS AND THAT WAS FUN.
I AM KIND OF A DRONE GEEK MYSELF AND SO IT WAS FUN SHOWING THEM THINGS THERE. WHAT ELSE?
[03:05:03]
OH, DR. DRATI AND I WENT TO THE BELLFLOWER CHAMBER OF COMMERCE EVENT IN THE MORNING AND GOT TO INTRODUCE OURSELVES TO THE COMMUNITY. DR. DRATI TALKED TO THE GROUP AND I WANT TO ACKNOWLEDGE YOU AND YOUR WORK AND GETTING OUT IN THE COMMUNITY AND REALLY TAKING YOUR LISTENING TOUR TO THE FULLEST AND GETTING OUT THERE. I THOUGHT THAT WAS A GREAT EVENT AND THE MAYFAIR WRESTLING TEAM HAD A MATCH AND THAT WAS REALLY FUN. I'M A WRESTLER MYSELF, SO IT WAS FUN AND IT IS LIKE MY COMFORT ZONE.A SHOUT OUT TO COACH AND THE TEAM.
THEY ARE DOING GREAT STUFF OVER THERE.
I BELIEVE COACH AND THE TEAM ARE GETTING ACKNOWLEDGED AT THE HALL OF FAME EVENT COMING UP. ON THAT NOTE, IT WOULD BE GOOD FOR US TO HAVE OUR OWN HALL OF FAME EVENT FOR BELLFLOWER HIGH SCHOOL AND MAYFAIR. WE NEED TO GET THEM INVOLVED WITH THAT OR SET UP OUR OWN. I THINK THAT WOULD BE A REALLY COOL THING. LET'S SEE.
WHAT ELSE? CAL APS BOARD MEMBER, AMAZING.
ON TOP OF MY FULL TIME JOB DOING ALL OF THIS AND SPENDING TIME WITH THE FAMILY, I HAVE BEEN WATCHING A LOT OF OTHER DISTRICT BOARD MEETINGS. IT IS TO SEE WHAT WE CAN DO BETTER HERE AT BELLFLOWER. A COUPLE THINGS CAME TO MIND AND I WILL THROW THEM OUT THERE AND I HOPE THEY GET THERE.
I THINK ONE THING THAT LONG BEACH DOES THAT IS REALLY GOOD IS ALL THEIR BOARD MEETINGS ARE IN SPANISH AS WELL.
I FEEL LIKE BECAUSE OF OUR DEMOGRAPHICS, I THINK IT WOULD BE REALLY IMPORTANT FOR US TO TRANSLATE OUR BOARD MEETINGS TO SPANISH. AND ALSO HAVE A RECAP OR A HIGH LIGHT FOR OUR PARENTS. AND ALSO HAVE THEM AVAILABLE ON YOUTUBE. THEY ARE EASIER TO SHARE AND IT IS MORE ACCESSIBLE. THERE ARE LITTLE THINGS LIKE THAT WE CAN DO TO SHOWING OUR COMMITMENT TO BEING ENGAGED IN THE COMMUNITY AND MAKING THE INFORMATION ACCESSIBLE.
OTHER THAN THAT, THANK YOU ALL FOR A GREAT MEETING AND BEING HERE TONIGHT. THANK YOU.
[APPLAUSE]. >> THANK YOU, BOARD MEMBER CRIHFIELD. SO NOW TO ME.
THANK YOU, EVERYBODY, FOR COMING.
I ALSO WANT TO SAY I ALSO -- I WASN'T ABLE TO BE OUT AS MUCH AS MY FELLOW BOARD MEMBERS THIS LAST MONTH.
I, LIKE YOU, HAD A LOT OF REPORTS DUE TO MY TEACHERS AND WANTING TO KNOW HOW THEIR STUDENTS WERE DOING.
I WAS BUSY WITH THAT. I DID GET OUT TO WATCHING THE "SHREK" MUSICAL WITH MR. SAUDERS AND HIS WHOLE TEAM THERE.
IT WAS AN AMAZING SHOW. I LOVED IT.
I ALWAYS ENJOY GOING OUT AND WATCHING OUR KIDS.
THEY ALWAYS SHOW AND HIGHLIGHT THE BEST OF EVERYTHING THAT GOES ON IN OUR SCHOOLS. AND TO JUST BE ABLE TO SEE THAT AND SHOWCASE THIS WAY FOR OUR WHOLE ENTIRE COMMUNITY IS REALLY NICE. IT IS ALMOST LIKE -- I WOULD EVEN SAY WE CAN INVITE OTHER PEOPLE FROM OTHER COMMUNITIES TO COME AND SEE THEM. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THAT TOO HAPPEN. SOME DAY.
I WAS ALSO ON THAT CAMPUS AT THE SAME TIME THEY HAD THE WRESTLING TEAM THERE, THE MATCH. I BELIEVE THAT'S THE ONE BOARD MEMBER CRIHFIELD ATTENDED. I DID A TWO FOR ONE.
I SAID, OH, HERE I AM AND I WILL GO THERE.
I WAS IMPRESSED BY THE DEDICATION OF THE STUDENTS WORKING SO HARD. A LOT OF THEM HAVE REALLY GOOD STANDINGS ACADEMICALLY. THEY HAVE TO BE ABLE TO, YOU KNOW, KEEP THE GRADES UP TO PARTICIPATE AND I WANT TO SHOUT OUT TO THE COACH WHO TOLD ME THAT HE IS THE COACH FOR THE FEMALE WRESTLING TEAM. I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW WE HAD A FEMALE WRESTLING TEAM, BUT APPARENTLY WE DO.
THAT'S REALLY EXCITING. THEY ACTUALLY ARE GOING ON TO CIF. CONGRATULATIONS TO THEIR TEAM.
THERE ARE STILL A LOT OF THINGS WE DONE -- WE CAN DO TO HELP THEM OUT. WE WILL TALK WITH DR. DRATI IN THE FUTURE. AND CONGRATULATIONS TO COACH AND HIS TEAM. I WANT TO CONGRATULATE MAYFAIR ITSELF FOR PASSING THE WASC ACCREDITATION.
I KNOW THE HARD HOURS AND THE LONG HOURS IT TAKES TO GO THROUGH ONE OF THESE. IT IS A LOT OF PAPERWORK AND A LOT OF CHECKING UP AND HAVING ALL OF THESE INTERVIEWS WITH ALL OF THESE PEOPLE WHO ARE GOING TO GIVE YOU [INAUDIBLE] SO A THANK YOU TO THE TEACHERS AND THE PARENTS WHO MAKE THAT HAPPEN FOR US. AND I ALSO WANTED TO REPORT THAT I WILL BE JOINING THE WELL FOR ASIAN PACIFIC -- ASIAN-AMERICAN
[03:10:09]
PACIFIC ISLANDERS AND LATINO LEADERS LIKE MY FELLOW BOARD MEMBER, MS. ARMSTRONG. SO I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO HAVING SOME GREAT CONVERSATIONS ABOUT WATER WITH MS. ARMSTRONG AS WELL. AND I HOPE EVERYBODY IS -- WILL BE ABLE TO ENJOY THIS LAST -- THIS NEXT FOUR-DAY WEEKEND.I BELIEVE WE HAVE FRIDAY, SATURDAY, SUNDAY AND MONEY -- MONDAY, RIGHT? I AM NOT GIVING FREE DAYS OFF,
DO GO TO WORK TOMORROW, PLEASE. SHOW UP.
>> I WILL GO AFTER YOU. I DON'T WANT TO DISRUPT YOU.
>> I BELIEVE THAT WAS IT FOR US. >> WE DO HAVE TO -- NOW THAT I'M THINKING ABOUT IT, I WAS JUST REMINDED THAT WE WERE RECONSIDERING THE FEBRUARY 23RD DATE, SO WE SHOULD TAKE A MOTION FOR AT LEAST THAT ONE.
I RECOMMEND THAT THE 22ND LOOKS PRETTY CLEAR INSTEAD OF HAVING IT ON THE 23RD AND WE MOVE THE MEETING TO THE 22ND.
FELLOW BOARD MEMBERS WOULD YOU MIND QUICKLY LOOKING AT YOUR CALENDARS AND GIVING US A YES OR A NO?
FEBRUARY 22ND. >> I THINK FEBRUARY 22ND -- I'M SORRY. DID YOU WANT TO SAY SOMETHING?
>> THERE IS A LAKEWOOD STATE OF THE CITY.
>> IT IS AFTERNOON THOUGH. >> FROM 12 TO 3.
OKAY. SO WHAT TIME WOULD -- WERE YOU LOOKING AT? REGULAR?
5:00? >> TILELY IT IS -- ACTUALLY IT
>> [INAUDIBLE]. >> SO LAKEWOOD STATE OF THE CITY IS FROM 12 UNTIL ABOUT 1:30. I DON'T THINK IT SHOULD INTERFERE. I'M OKAY WITH THAT.
>> YES, THE 22ND. >> ARE WE DOING 5:00? 4:00? 4 OR 5?
>> WE WILL GO AHEAD AND STICK TO 4:00.
>> 4:00. >> DID YOU HAVE SOMETHING?
>> NO. >> I HAVE A SOFTBALL GAME, BUT THEY WON'T MISS ME. I'M NOT THAT GOOD.
>> I'M GOOD WITH THE 22ND. >> SO WE WILL NEED A MOTION.
>> I MAKE A MOTION THAT WE HAVE OUR MEETING MOVED FROM THE 23RD TO THE 22ND OF FEBRUARY, 2023.
>> SECOND. >> ROLL CALL, PLEASE.
>> THANK YOU. >> SO AT THIS TIME DO WE HAVE ANY OTHER ITEMS THAT WE NEED TO DISCUSS? THANK YOU SO MUCH. THE BOARD WILL ADJOURN THE MEETING AT 8:56 P.M. THANK YOU VERY MUC
