>> THANK YOU FOR INVITING ME TO PROVIDE INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE FOR THIS EVENING. I HAVE A VERY SHORT STORY FOR YOU ENTITLED A BUTTERFLY. IN A MAN FOUND A COCOON FOR A BUTTERFLY. ONE DAY A SMALL OPENING APPEARED AND HE SAT AND WATCHED THE BUTTERFLY FOR SEVERAL HOURS AS IT STRUGGLED TO FORCE ITS BODY THROUGH THE LITTLE HOLE.
THEN IT SEEMED TO STOP MAKING ANY PROGRESS.
IT APPEARED AS IF IT HAD GOTTEN AS FAR AS IT COULD COULD GO NO FURTHER IN THE MAN DECIDED TO HELP THE BUTTERFLY.
HE TOOK A PAIR OF SCISSORS AND SNIPPED THE REMAINING BIT OF COCOON. THE BUTTERFLY EMERGED EASILY.
SOMETHING WAS STRANGE, THOUGH. THE BUTTERFLY HEAD OF SWOLLEN BODY AND TROUBLED MEAN WINGS. THE MAN CONTINUED TO WATCH THE BUTTERFLY BECAUSE HE EXPECTED THE ANY MOMENT THE WINGS WOULD ENLARGE AND EXPAND TO SUPPORT THE BODY.
WHICH WOULD THEN CONTRACT IN TIME.
NEITHER HAPPENED. IN FACT, THE BUTTERFLY SPENT THE REST OF HIS LIFE CRAWLING AROUND WITH A SWOLLEN BODY IN THE FORM WINGS. WAS NEVER ABLE TO FLY.
WITH THE MAN IN HIS KINDNESS AND HIS DID NOT UNDERSTAND WAS THE RESTRICTING COCOON AND THE STRUGGLE REQUIRED FOR THE BUTTERFLY TO GET THROUGH THE SMALL OPENING OF THE COCOON OUR NATURES WAY OF FORCING FOOD FOR THE BODY OF THE BUTTERFLY.
THAT FLUID WOULD GO INTO THE WINGS TO EXPAND.
SOMETIMES STRUGGLES HER EXACTLY WHAT WE NEED IN OUR LIFE.
OF NATURE ALLOWED US TO GO THROUGH ALL OUR LIFE WITHOUT ANY OBSTACLES, THAT WOULD CRIPPLE US.
WE WOULD NOT BE AS STRONG AS WHAT WE COULD HAVE BEEN.
NOT ONLY THAT, WE COULD NEVER FLY.
IN CLOSING, I WOULD LIKE TO REMIND US THE MONTH OF MAY PROVIDES OUR SCHOOL DISTRICT AND COMMUNITY THE OPPORTUNITY TO REFLECT UPON AND CELEBRATE THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF OUR STAFF AND STUDENTS FOR THE 21/22 SCHOOL YEAR.
IN WE HAVE MANY STUDENTS AND FAMILIES HERE WITH US THIS EVENING WHO MAY HAVE STRUGGLED TO OBSTACLES SUCH AS A CHALLENGING ACADEMIC YEAR. CHALLENGING ATHLETIC SEASON OR A CHALLENGING CTE COURSE IN COMPETITION.
THE STUDENTS BEEN CELEBRATED HERE TONIGHT HAVE RISEN ABOVE THE CHALLENGES. WE HAVE PREPARED THEM TO BE STRONG AND TO FLY WITH CONFIDENCE.
THIS IS OUR PURPOSE IN THIS IS WHAT WE DO.
[CLAPPING] >>RENITA ARMSTRONG : THANK YOU
[6. FLAG SALUTE]
SO MUCH FOR THAT. WE WILL NOW HAVE MS. JESSICA CUMMINGS, THE PRINCIPLE OF REALLY POWELL ELEMENTARY.SHE WILL BE LEADING THE FLAG SALUTE FOR THIS EVENING.
WELCOME. >> PLACE YOUR RIGHT HAND OVER YOUR HEART. READY, BEGIN.
I PLEDGE ALLEGIANCE TO THE FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AND TO THE REPUBLIC FOR WHICH IT STANDS, ONE NATION UNDER GOD, INDIVISIBLE, WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL.
[7. ORAL REPORTS AND PRESENTATIONS]
>>RENITA ARMSTRONG : THANK YOU SO MUCH, MRS. CUMMINGS.
[00:05:01]
IT IS TIME FOR THE ORAL REPORTS AND PRESENTATIONS.MR. DOWNING. LET'S START WITH MR. DOWNING.
>> I ATTENDED THE WHO AWARDS WERE WE HONORED MICHELLE.
VERY, VERY GOOD CEREMONY, BUT AT THE SAME TIME THERE WAS SADNESS THERE. HER FAMILY WAS THERE, WE WERE THERE AND WE WERE THERE TO HONOR HER.
I ALSO ATTENDED THE MAYFAIR FIESTA WHERE THE MAYFAIR HIGH SCHOOL MARITIME SINGERS PERFORMED.
AND IT WAS VERY ENJOYABLE. AND THAT IS ABOUT IT FOR ME.
THANK YOU. >>RENITA ARMSTRONG : THANK YOU SO MUCH, BOARD MEMBER DOWNING. CAN WE HEAR FROM BOARD MEMBER
GARZA?>>MAYRA GARZA: GOOD EVENING EVERYONE.
WELCOME. I WANT TO REPORT THAT I ALSO ATTENDED THE WHO AWARDS ALONG WITH FELLOW BOARD MEMBERS ARMSTRONG AND DOWNING AND OUR SUPERINTENDENT AS WELL, MS. ALENE AND MS. CARTER WERE THERE IN ATTENDANCE.
IT WAS A BEAUTIFUL CEREMONY THAT WE WERE ALL ABLE TO SHOW HOW MUCH THIS TEACHER IMPACTED OUR STUDENTS AND THOSE THAT WORKED AROUND HER. I ALSO WENT TO THE OPEN HOUSES THIS YEAR IN PERSON. THAT WAS NEW FOR ME AND EXCITING. THE FIRST OPEN HOUSE, I HAD LOFTY GOALS. SO I DID MAP IT OUT, I TOOK MY PLACE HOW MUCH TIME I WANTED TO ALLOCATE FOR EACH SCHOOL.
AND I WAS ALMOST GOING TO MAKE MY GOAL, EXCEPT I MADE ONE SMALL ÃNOT MISTAKE, BUT WHAT I SHOULD HAVE DONE WAS GONE TO LINDSTROM FIRST AND THEN ENDED UP AT IOC.
BUT BECAUSE I WANT TO ILC FIRST, THAT IS WHERE I KNOW A LOT OF COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND THAT IS WHERE I USED TO WORK AT, I ENDED UP FINISHING UP MY TIME THERE.
SO I DIDN'T MAKE IT TO LINDSTROM, I'M SO SORRY, LINDSTROM, BUT I WILL MAKE IT TO YOUR OPEN HOUSE NEXT YEAR.
AND I WILL BE ON YOUR CAMPUS SOMETIME BEFORE THE SCHOOL YEAR ENDS JUST TO SEE THE WONDERFUL WORK THAT YOU ARE DOING.
AND THEN FOR THE SECOND OPEN HOUSE I DID MAKE IT TO ALL OF THE SCHOOLS. WITH ONE OF THEM I ENDED UP GOING A LITTLE BIT LATER. BUT I WAS ABLE TO TALK TO THE PRINCIPAL THERE AND SPOKE TO HER ABOUT WHAT IS GOING ON ON HER CAMPUS AND HOW EXCITED SHE WAS TO SEE ALL THE KIDS BACK AND THE PARENTS AS WELL. TO BE ABLE TO SEE THE MARVELOUS WORK THAT THEY ARE DOING AND ALL OF THEIR EFFORTS THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE SCHOOL YEAR. SO ALSO, HAPPY BELATED TEACHERS APPRECIATION DAY, MOTHER'S DAY AND EXECUTIVE PROFESSIONALS DAY. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL THAT YOU DO AND HOW YOU SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS.
>>RENITA ARMSTRONG : THANK YOU SO MUCH, BOARD MEMBER MRS. GARZA. MAY WE HEAR FROM OUR BOARD
MEMBER DOCTOR ELHESSEN? >>SUE ELHESSEN: THANK YOU SO MUCH. HELLO EVERYONE.
SO NICE TO SEE BRIGHTON FACES IN OUR AUDIENCE TODAY TOO.LL OF YOU ARE BRIGHT FACES, BUT I LOVE SEEING OUR STUDENTS WHEN THEY COME. I ALSO ATTENDED THE OPENHOUSES.
I WAS AT LINDSTROM . AND I SAW THE WONDERFUL PRESENTATION OF THE WAX MUSEUM OF STUDENTS PORTRAYING THERE Ã I DON'T WANT TO SAY NOT HERO, BUT SIGNIFICANT MODEL.
FOR EXAMPLE, THERE WAS ANNE FRANK AND SHE TOLD HER STORY, THE STUDENT, AND THEN THERE WAS ALSO WESTERN ÃHELPED ME. I
THINK YOU KNOW THE TITLE. >> JEDEDIAH.
>>SUE ELHESSEN: THANK YOU. SO THEY DID A GREAT PERFORMANCE. I WAS ALSO ABLE TO VISIT SOME CLASSROOMS. SOME OF THE SPECIAL ED CLASSROOMS ALSO, SEEING THE STUDENTS REALLY EXCELLING AT STUDENTS REALLY APPLYING SOME GREAT NEW CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT STYLES TO SUPPORT THEIR ACADEMIC PROGRAMS. I ALSO ATTENDED THE LAKEWOOD PAN-AMERICAN ROTARIAN SCHOLARSHIPS WERE WE HONORED TO OF OUR MAYFAIR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. YEA, MAYFAIR! AND IT WAS JACKSON.'M SO SORRY IF I PRONOUNCE YOUR LAST NAME, BUT IT IS ZELESTRA AND ALSO.
[00:10:08]
[NAME] AND I CAN'T EVEN ÃI'M SORRY.I AM BUTCHERING YOUR LAST NAME.
>> I DON'T HAVE IT IN FRONT OF ME, BUT YOU SAY EVERY SINGLE
SYLLABLE. >>SUE ELHESSEN: OKAY.
JIACARONA. THEY BOTH WON THEIR AWARDS AND THEY HAD OUTSTANDING OTHER STUDENTS FROM DIFFERENT DISTRICT AREAS WHO ALSO RECEIVED THEIR SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS AND HEARING THEIR STORIES.
ESPECIALLY HEARING FROM THE MOTHER OF ONE OF OUR STUDENTS AT MAYFAIR HIGH SCHOOL. HOW SHE WAS REALLY SO SUPPORTIVE. SHE'S A NURSE AND SOMETIMES HAD TO TRAVEL OUTSIDE OF THE STATE. AND HER SON WAS LEARNING ONLINE AND SHE REALLY WANTED TO RECOGNIZE OUR TEACHERS.
FOR REALLY BEING THERE FOR HIM AND SUPPORTING HIM AT THAT TIME, CRITICAL TIME AND HOW HE REALLY STRUGGLED.
BUT HE IS MOVING ONTO, I THINK IT IS NORTH CAROLINA.
TO STUDY AT ÃI FORGOT THE NAME OF THE COLLEGE.
IT STARTS WITH A W. SO EXCUSE ME.
BUT MY STORY IS THE STUDENTS REALLY STRUGGLED AND YET THEY SUCCEEDED AND ONE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR THEIR EFFORTS SO I APPLAUD THEM FOR THAT. I ALSO ATTENDED THE SOMERSET CONTINUATION MODEL SCHOOL AWAR .
UNDER THE LEADERSHIP OF CLIFF HAGANS BACK THERE, CONGRATULATIONS. AND ALSO, I ATTENDED THE LONG BEACH AWARD FOR SEE CSEA, WHERE WE ACKNOWLEDGE OUR CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE STEPHANIE FOR SOMERSET.
SHE IS A GREAT SUPPORT TO THE ADMINISTRATORS THERE.
AND ALSO OUR TEACHERS WERE AWARDED SPECIFICALLY FROM THE SKILLS USA. AND GIVE SPECIAL ACKNOWLEDGMENT TO OUR CTE PROGRAM AND OUR STUDENTS WHO ARE MOVING ON TO NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. AND IT JUST SHOWS THE GREAT EFFORT OF WHAT OUR TEACHERS ARE DOING AND WHAT OUR STUDENTS ARE EXCELLING IN. DID I FORGET SOMETHING? I ALSO WANTED TO ACKNOWLEDGE OUR TEACHERS IN THATPROGRAM .
BRIAN AMADA, JULIO GUZMAN AND ALSO MARK JOHNSON, WHO WAS ALSO IN ATTENDANCE THERE WITH ME. I APOLOGIZE IF I FORGOT SOMEONE. WHAT ELSE DID I DO?THAT IS PRETTY MUCH WHAT I ATTENDED. I ALSO WANTED TO GIVE ACKNOWLEDGMENT TO THIS MONTH PARTICULARLY HIS MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS MONTH. AND I WANTED TO SHARE SOME STATISTICS WITH YOU THAT MANY MENTAL HEALTH CONDITIONS FIRST APPEARED IN YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULTS.
WITH 50 PERCENT OF ALL CONDITIONS BEGINNING BY THE AGE OF 14 AND 75 PERCENT BY THE AGE OF 24.
ONE IN SIX YOUTH HAVE A MENTAL HEALTH CONDITION LIKE ANXIETY, DEPRESSION BUT ONLY HALF RECEIVED ANY MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES. EARLY TREATMENT IS EFFECTIVE AND CAN HELP YOUNG PEOPLE STAY IN SCHOOL AND ON TRACK TO ACHIEVE THEIR LIFE GOALS. IN FACT, THE EARLIER THE TREATMENT THE BETTER THE OUTCOMES AND LOWER COST.
UNFORTUNATELY, FAR TOO OFTEN THERE ARE FAR TOO LONG DELAYS BEFORE THE CHILDREN AND YOUTH GET THE HELP THEY NEED PRINT SCHOOLS PLAY A VITAL ROLE IN CONNECTING CHILDREN, YOUTH AND FAMILIES TO SERVICES. SCHOOL-BASED MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES BRING TRAINED MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS INTO SCHOOLS AND SCHOOLING MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES CONNECT YOUTH AND FAMILIES TO MORE INTENSIVE RESOURCES IN THE COMMUNITY.
SCHOOL-BASED AND SCHOOLING MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES REDUCE BARRIERS TO YOUTH AND FAMILIES GETTING NEEDED TREATMENT AND SUPPORT. ESPECIALLY FOR COMMUNITIES OF COLOR AND OTHER UNDERSERVED COMMUNITIES.
WHEN WE INVEST IN CHILDREN'S MENTAL HEALTH TO MAKE SURE THEY CAN GET THE RIGHT CARE AT THE RIGHT TIME, WE IMPROVE THE LIVES OUR CHILDREN, YOUTH AND FAMILIES AND OUR COMMUNITIES.
MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT FOR OUR KIDS IS ESSENTIAL.
THE START BY LISTENING AND TAKING IN WHAT THEY HAVE EXPERIENCED AND WHAT HAS CHALLENGED THEM IN MAKING DECISIONS FROM THERE. WE WANT OUR KIDS NOT ONLY TO BE GREAT IN ACADEMICS, BUT WE WANT THEM TO BE EMOTIONALLY HEALTHY.
AND I TAKE PASSION IN THIS AREA BECAUSE BEING A COUNSELOR MYSELF, IT IS SO REWARDING WHEN I SEE MY STUDENTS EXCEL ANDMOVE FORWARD . AND I KNOW EVERYBODY IN THIS ROOM HAS PROBABLY STRUGGLED WITH SOMETHING.
[00:15:05]
ESPECIALLY SINCE COVID. WHETHER IT IS ANXIETY OR DEPRESSION. WE WANT TO MAKE SURE EVERYONE IS AWARE OF IT AND CAN TALK ABOUT IT AND SEEK HELP FOR IT.>>RENITA ARMSTRONG : THANK YOU SO MUCH, DOCTOR ELHESSEN.
MENTAL HEALTH IS VERY, VERY IMPORTANT, AND I'M GLAD AT THAT WE AT THE DISTRICT LEVEL HAVE BROUGHT ON COUNSELORS AT EACH SITE TO HELP WITH THAT. AND WE DO HAVE OUTSIDE AGENCIES THAT THEY CAN REFER TO. THERE ARE SERVICES OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL THAT YOU CAN GET HELP WITH.
SO FOR ME, WELL, THERE IS A LOT OF CAMPAIGNING GOING AROUND FOR OUR LOS ANGELES COUNTY SUPERVISORS.
SEVERAL HAVE REACHED OUT TO ME. I HAVE JUST BEEN SUPPORTING THOSE CANDIDATES WHO PROFESSED TO BEING VERY SUPPORTIVE HOURS PUBLIC SCHOOLS. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT WE HAVE LEADERS IN OFFICE THAT SUPPORT PUBLIC SCHOOLS.
I WILL JUST SAY THAT MUCH. I'VE JUST BEEN SUPPORTING THOSE PEOPLE WHEN THEY HAVE THEIR GATHERINGS.
I FINISHED MY THIRD SESSION OF MY MASTERS IN GOVERNANCE PUT ON BY CALIFORNIA SCHOOL BOARD ASSOCIATIONS.I HAVE TWO MORE SECTIONS TO FINISH. AND LEARNING A LOT.
A LOT OF THINGS ARE BEING JUST KIND OF LIKE REITERATED AND SO I AM REMINDED OF LOTS OF DIFFERENT POLICIES AND PROCEDURES THAT ARE IN PLACE FOR US BOARD MEMBERS TO USE AS GUIDELINES. I AM ALSO A MEMBER OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY SCHOOL TRUSTEES ASSOCIATION.
SO WHAT WE DO THERE IS WE HAVE BOARD MEMBERS AND EVEN SOMETIMES SUPERINTENDENTS. THEY GET TOGETHER WE HAD A REPRESENTATIVE FROM LA COUNTY OFFICE OF EDUCATION.
AND THEY BRING DIFFERENT KEY MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY.
AND THEY SURE ISSUES WITH US AND SOMETIMES PROVIDE SUGGESTIONS ON WHAT TO LOOK FOR AND HOW TO MOVE FORWARD.
THE LAST ONE I DID ATTEND THEY TALKED ABOUT OUR FOSTER YOUTH, OUR HOMELESS YOUTH AND OUR INCARCERATED YOUTH.UNTIL THOSE CHILDREN ARE JUST AS IMPORTANT AS THE NEXT STUDENT.
AND SO OUR AIM IS TO MAKE SURE THAT ALL STUDENTS GET WHAT THEY NEED AT THEIR LEVEL. I HAVE ALSO ÃI'M STILL INVOLVED IN THE INITIATIVE FOR COMMUNITY SCHOOLS.
I LIKE TO SAY BELLFLOWER IS ALREADY INSTITUTING AND TAKING ADVANTAGE OF THEIR COMMUNITY PARTNERS, BUT THERE IS ALWAYS GROWTH. AND I WILL BE LEARNING MORE ABOUT WHAT THEY ARE EXPECTING THE COMMUNITY SCHOOLS TO LOOK LIKE. I'M ALSO AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF CALIFORNIA TEACHERS ASSOCIATION, AND I AM SPECIFICALLY THE SOUTHEASTERN Ã SOUTHEASTERN SECTION OF LA COUNTY. I'M THE AT-LARGE, WHICH MEANS I'M THE CHAIR PERSON FOR LGBT Q ADVOCACY.
I AM THE CHAIRPERSON FOR WOMEN'S ADVOCACY AND OUR HUMAN RIGHTS ADVOCACY. THE ONLY THING IS I HAVE SERVED FOR THREE YEARS THERE AND I HAVE HAD MY LAST MEETING.
BUT I'M NOT GOING TO STOP REACHING OUT TO THE COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS THAT SUPPORT OUR STUDENTS IN THOSE AREAS.
I ALSO ATTENDED, LIKE THEY SAY, THE MODEL SCHOOL FOR SOMERSET.
IT WAS FUN. WAS HELD AT THE AQUARIUM AND THEY HAD THESE NICE LITTLE CENTERPIECES THAT WERE NICE BUT I COULDN'T TAKE ANY HOME BECAUSE THEY DIDN'T BELONG TO ME. AND THEN I ALSO ATTENDED THE,
[00:20:05]
THE CIVICS LEARNING STUDENT SHOWCASE.THAT WAS HELD AT THE NIXON LIBRARY .
OUR SCHOOL RECEIVED AN AWARD IN 2020, BUT BECAUSE OF COVID WE DID NOT, WE COULD NOT ACCEPT OUR AWARD PUBLICLY.
AND SO WHAT THEY DID, THEY ALLOWED THE AWARDEES FOR 2020 AND 2021 TO RECEIVE THEIR AWARDSPUBLICLY .
ALONG WITH THE SCHOOLS WHO GOT THEIR CIVIC AWARD IN 2022.
SO ONE LAST THING I GOT APPOINTED TO IS TO WORK WITH THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION.
IT IS AN HONOR TO BE LOOKED UPON AS SOMEONE WITH AN OPEN MIND. THE REASON WHY I AM WORKING DIRECTLY WITH THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION IS BECAUSE THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT UNIVERSAL SCHOOLS UNIVERSAL PRESCHOOL . SO WE HAVE SOME CHALLENGES AHEAD OF US THEY ARE WANTING TO IMPLEMENT THAT PROGRAM LIKE COME FALL. AS IF WE ARE NOT ALREADY STRUGGLING WITH COMING OUT OF COVID.
ISSUES WITH STAFF. WE ARE EXPERIENCING A LOT OF STAFFING. BUT AT THE SAME TIME WE WANT TO MOVE FORWARD WITH PROGRAMS THAT COULD BE VERY BENEFICIAL TO OUR EARLY LEARNERS, WHICH IS VERY IMPORTANT.
WE HAVE TO GET THESE CHILDREN AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE.
I HAVE ONE MORE MEETING, AT LEAST ONE MORE MEETING TO TALK ABOUT SOME OF THE BARRIERS OUR SCHOOLS WILL BE FACING TO IMPLEMENT A PROGRAM. JUST KEEP US ALL IN YOUR THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS AS WE PUSH FORWARD FOR TRULY FROM OUR HEART BLEEDS IS BEST FOR ALL OUR STUDENTS.
AND THAT IS MY REPORT. OKAY, SO NOW WE HAVE ÃIT IS
TIME FOR STAFF COMMENTS. >> AT THIS TIME I WOULD LIKE TO RECOGNIZE REVEREND THOMAS EVANS WHO WAS RECENTLY SELECTED BY THE BOARD OF EDUCATION TO FILL OUR CURRENT VACANCY.
REVEREND IVINS IS UNABLE TO BE SWORN IN THIS EVENING AS WE ARE STILL WAITING FOR THE PAPERWORK TO CLEAR.OWEVER, THAT DOES NOT STOP HIM FROM JUMPING RIGHT INTO VISITING SCHOOLS AND BEING HERE TONIGHT. WE ARE SUPER EXCITED AND OVER WE GET TO SWEAR HIM IN AT OUR NEXT MEETING.
BUT I WANTED TO GIVE THEM OUR TO THE OPPORTUNITY TO SAY HI AND MAYBE SHARE WHAT HE HAS BEEN UP TO SINCE LAST WEEK WHEN HE SELECTED HIM AS YOUR FELLOW BOARD MEMBER.
>> HELLO EVERYONE. GOOD EVENING.
I'M MORE THAN HAPPY TO BE HERE. TONIGHT UNFORTUNATELY ALL THESE THINGS HAPPEN, BUT I WANT TO SAY THE LAST TWO WEEKS I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO BE IN A FEW OF THE OPEN HOUSES.
CRAIG WILLIAMS AND RAMONA ELEMENTARYSCHOOL .
IT WAS AN INCREDIBLE AND UNIQUE EXPERIENCE IN THOSE CLASSROOMS WITH A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE. NOT NECESSARILY AS A PARENT, BUT LISTEN STORIES.ISTEN THE HIGHLIGHTS OF TEACHERS AND PRINCIPALS. THERE WAS A UNIQUE EXPERIENCE FOR ME. TODAY, A FEW HOURS AGO I WAS IN THE WASHINGTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL AND I LOVE MUSIC AND I LOVE BAND MUSIC. HE IS LEADING GREATLY THIS AREA SO I HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SAY HI AND TO SAY THANK YOU FOR SOME OF THE PARENTS. BECAUSE I BELIEVE THAT THEY ARE IN THE FIRST LINE MOTIVATING THE CHILDREN TALKING WITH MS. AURORA. THE CLOTHES THE WEEK LIKE A CAREER WEEK INCREDIBLE JOB THAT THEY ARE DOING INVITING PROFESSIONALS, DOCTORS, LAWYER .
COMING TO TALK AT LUNCH TIME WITH CHILDREN, YOU KNOW? TO MOTIVATE THEM FOR THE FUTURE.
AND SO I THINK IT IS AN INCREDIBLE IDEA.
AND I SPENT TIME TALKING WITH SOME OF THE PEOPLE IN THE
[00:25:01]
SCHOOL. WHAT I SAID, DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE, DIFFERENT EXPERIENCES .BUT I CAN FEEL THE SPIRIT. I CAN FEEL THE SPIRIT OF THIS DISTRICT AND THE SCHOOLS AND EVERYBODY LOOKS LIKE THEY ARE MOVING FORWARD LOOKING FOR SOMETHING ELSE.
AND FOR THE FUTURE I CAN SEE INCREDIBLE FUTURE FOR US.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. >>RENITA ARMSTRONG : THANK YOU.
I CERTAINLY HOPE WE HAVE AN INCREDIBLE FUTURE AHEAD OF US.
ELECTIONS BEGAN TO RUN THROUGH TUESDAY, MAY 19 AND THE BALLOTS WILL BE EMAILED DIRECTLY TO STUDENTS COUNTS WITH THE CONFIDENTIAL STUDENT STATEMENTS AND THE WAY IT WILL WORK IS THEY WILL RANK THE CANDIDATES IN ORDER 124 AND THAT WE WE USE NUMBERS IF WE HAVE A TYPE. SO WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING THOSE RESULTS IN HAVING STUDENT BOARD MEMBERS JOIN YOU
AT THE DIOCESE WILL. >>RENITA ARMSTRONG : THAT'S GOING TO BE EXCITING FOR IN WHATEVER STUDENT IS CHOSEN, IT'S GOING TO BE A GREAT EXPERIENCE.

THEREFORE MORE, RIGHT? >> YES. NEXT FROM COMMUNITY FIND FAMILY GOT INCIDENT WE HAVE A PARTNERSHIP PRESENTATION I LIKE TO INTRODUCE MR. BILL SINGLE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR MISS SAID LET'S, CHIEF MEDICAL SERVICES FOR COMMUNITY GARDEN CENTER AND THEY WILL GIVE YOU A BRIEF PRESENTATION OF HOW THE RECENTLY IMPLEMENT A PARTNERSHIP WITH THAT ORGANIZATION IS BENEFITING OUR STUDENTS.> WELCOME.
>> WHAT A GREAT NIGHT TO BE HERE. LET ME START OFF LET'S SEE IF I CAN GET THE CLICKER. THERE IT IS. LET ME START OFF WITH HER'S MISSION STATEMENT. OUR MISSION IS TO SOUTHEAST LOS ANGELES COUNTY FROM TRAUMA, ABUSE, EMOTIONAL, AND MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES THROUGH PROVEN INTERVENTIONS AND COMPASSIONATE GUIDANCE. WE ARE GOING TO START OFF WITH A LITTLE BIT OF STATS FOR YOU GUYS. OR, TAGTEAM, CELESTE AND I. I'M GONNA HANDLE THE STATS PART.
WANT TO START OFF WITH HER GENERAL STANDS BEFORE ME CONTRACTED WITH THE UST.
WHAT WE WERE DOING IN THE CITY OF BELLFLOWER. WE SAW IN FISCAL YEAR 2021.
87 CLIENTS AND OUT OF THOSE 187 CLIENTS HUNDRED AND 19 WERE STUDENTS OF UST.E DELIVERED 45 28 SERVICE HOURS. SO 4528 SERVICE HOURS UNDER ARMOUR APARTMENT MENTAL HEALTH CONTRACT WE HAD. 2150 OF THOSE HOURS WERE BE UST STUDENTS THAT WE SERVED WITH.
THE DEMOGRAPHICS OF WHO WE SEE AGES 9 I MEAN 5 ? 9, 23 PERCENT AGES 10 THROUGH 1435 PERCENT.
GES 15 THROUGH 19, 27 PERCENT. THE GENDERS ABOUT 50-50.
51 PERCENT MALE, 49 PERCENT FEMALE. MAJORITY OF OUR CLIENTS ARE HISPANIC AND THEREFORE WE HAVE A BILINGUAL STAFF TO SERVICE OUR HISPANIC COMMUNITY.
76 PERCENT. 7 PERCENT WERE CAUCASIAN, 6 PERCENT AFRICAN-AMERICAN AND 8 PERCENT OTHER. WE'VE GOTTEN COMMUNICATION WITH THE UST OVER POSSIBLY ADDRESSING AN AREA OF NEED THAT I SAW IN BOTH TRACY SAW AS WELL.
THAT IS KIDS THAT DON'T QUALIFY FOR MEDI-CAL. MAYBE THERE PARENTS ARE MAKING A DOLLAR MORE THAN WHAT QUALIFIES THEM. BUT THEY'RE NOT MAKING ENOUGH MONEY TO GET PRIVATE SERVICES ARE REALLY IN A GAP WHETHER NOT GETTING SERVICES.
DISCUSSING THIS WITH TRACY WE CAME UP WITH AN IDEA OF COMING IN WITH THE PROGRAM WHERE WE WOULD HAVE PEOPLE ON SITE AND THEY WOULD BE ABLE TO SEE, WHAT I CALL KIDS.
WE PUT ALL THE NUTS AND BOLTS TOGETHER. THE IDEA WAS TO BRING ON BOARD FULL-TIME ON THE CAMPUSES ONE SUPERVISOR, CLINICAL SUPERVISOR AND TO BILINGUAL OUTPATIENT THERAPISTS. WE ALSO BROUGHT IN 3 INTERNS TO HELP SEE THESE KIDS.
AT THIS POINT, TURN IT OVER TO CELESTE AND SHE WILL TALK TO YOU ABOUT WHAT I THINK IS IMPORTANT AND THAT IS WHAT YOU'RE GETTING IN HER AGENCY. THE EXPERIENCE YOU'RE GETTING
INTERAGENCY. >> LITTLE BIT ABOUT OUR TEAM. FIRST, I WANT TO INTRODUCE MYSELF FROM LICENSED CLINICAL SOCIAL WORKER. A BENT AND MENTAL HEALTH FIELD FOR 35 YEARS. IT IS MY PASSION. YOU DON'T STAIN IF FEEL LIKE THIS AND NOT BE PASSIONATE ABOUT IT. I CAN SAY I AM JUST AS PASSIONATE TODAY AS I WAS WHEN I STARTED MANY, MANY MOONS AGO. I PRIMARILY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE
[01:15:06]
OVERSIGHT OF OUR CLINICAL PROGRAMS, EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP OF ALL OF OUR STAFF AND OUR SERVICES. SO BE UST OF COURSE FALLS UNDER THAT.'VE SOME SPECIALTY TRAINING IN FAMILY THERAPY, COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPY AND CHILD IN A DRAWER TRAUMA.THE STAFF, WHERE'S HILARY? I DON'T WANT TO LEAVE HILARY OUT OF THIS.
THE BUS TEAM IS COMPRISED OF A GROUP OF VERY PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCED MENTAL HEALTH PEOPLE. HILARY SHERMAN WHO WAS NOT HERE BUT SHOULD DEPEND.
ANYWAY SHE HAS BEEN WITH US FOR OVER 20 YEARS. I HIRED HER AND SHE GOT HER HOURS UNDER ME AND SHE IS TRAINED IN SEVERAL EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICES.
SHE IS OUR DIRECTOR OF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING.
AND IS OUR IN-HOUSE TRAINER FOR RPC IT AND SEVERAL OF OUR EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICES.
SHE PROVIDED THE DIRECT OVERSIGHT OF THE STAFF IN THE SCHOOLS.
THEN WE HAD 3 CLINICIANS IN THE PROGRAM. NAPILIY IS ONE OF THEM.
SHE IS BILINGUAL.HE'S BEEN WITH US FOR ABOUT 4 YEARS. SHE IS CERTIFIED IN A FEW COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL, DBT AND MANAGING ADAPTIVE PRACTICES. BEATRICE DEAS IS CERTIFIED IN PCI TAPE WHICH IS FOR THE YOUNGER KIDS ZERO ? 6. IT'S AN EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE.
FOR THE 0 TO 6 POPULATION. SHE'S ALSO IN THE MAP PROGRAM. HEN FINALLY AND JASLEEN DOES
OUR TFC B DATE WHICH IS OUR TRAUMA FOCUSED. >> ALL OF OUR STUFF MAINTAIN CERTIFICATIONS. THEY'RE NOT JUST A ONE-DAY CLASS.
IT'S A 12 TO 18 MONTH CERTIFICATION PROGRAM. IN COGNITIVE BEHAVIORAL THERAPIES WHICH IS A GOLD STANDARD FOR DEPRESSION, ANXIETY AND TRAUMA.
IN SELF HARM. OUR STAFF COME WITH QUITE A BIT OF EXPERIENCE.
AND GO AHEAD. >> SO THE CONTRACT WAS ENACTED IN JULY 2021.
UNDER THE DIRECTION OF UST WITH THE GOAL OF MEETING IDENTIFIED MENTAL HEALTH NEEDS WITHIN THE DISTRICT. THE LEADERSHIP CREATED THE PROCESS UNDER CELESTE AND CELESTE BY THE WAY CREATED AN INTENSIVE PROGRAM AT OUR AGENCY, HOW MANY YEARS AGO WAS
THAT? >> 96. >> IT'S SUPER SUCCESSFUL.
24/7 INTENSIVE WING HAVE HER AGENCY. SHE KNOWS HOW TO SET UP PROGRAMS IS WHAT I'M TRYING TO SAY. UST SUPPLIED OFFICE SPACE FOR THE PEOPLE THAT CELESTSITE. WE WENT TO WORK. WHAT WERE SEEN IN ON A WRIGLEY BASIS ARE CASES OF ANXIETY, DEPRESSION, AGGRESSION, SOCIAL ISSUES, BEHAVIORAL ISSUES AND STRESS. DO YOU WANT TO ELABORATE ON ANY OF THAT?
>> I'M NOT TO SURE WHAT TO ELABORATE ON. THOSE OF THE GENERAL CATEGORIES. I DID FORGET TO MENTION WE HAVE MSW IT STARTS STANDS FOR MASTERS OF SOCIAL WORK. WE HAD 3 STUDENTS, ONE FROM CAL STATE LONG BEACH AND 2 FROM CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS. ONE WAS A SECOND YEAR THE OTHER 2 WERE FIRST-YEAR STUDENTS.
THEY ACTUALLY WERE UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF JASLEEN WHO IS CONSIDERED OUR FIELD INSTRUCTOR THAT SHE PROVIDED DIRECT SERVICES. I DIDN'T WANT TO NOT MENTION PAM. YEAH, THESE ARE THE TYPICAL ISSUES AND LOTS OF TRAUMA.
THE AGENCY WE SEE REALLY WIDE RANGE OF MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES FROM SORT OF ADJUSTMENT DISORDERS ALL THE WAY UP TO FULL PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS. WE HAVE A PSYCHIATRIST, A WONDERFUL PSYCHIATRIST THAT'S WORKED WITH US FOR 17 YEARS. SHE'S DOUBLE BOARD CERTIFIED IN NEUROLOGY AND CHILD AND ADOLESCENT PSYCHIATRY. HAVE A WONDERFUL PEDIATRIC NEUROPSYCHOLOGIST THAT DOES WITHOUT WORKS WITH EXODUS TESTING AS WELL.
HAVE A REALLY GOOD TIGHT TEAM. MOST OF HER CLINICAL SUPERVISORS AND ABOVE HAVE BEEN WITH US FOR 10+ YEARS. WERE PRETTY WELL OILED MACHINE IN THAT WAY.
AND SUPER COMMITTED TO PROVIDING QUALITY SERVICES TO OUR CLIENTS.
>> SO SINCE WE IMPLEMENTED THE CONTRACT. READ HUNDRED 33 STUDENTS REFERRED TO THE STOP THAT WAS ON SITE. IT WAS FOUND THAT 85 OF THOSE WERE NEEDED DIRECT SERVICES. WHEN INTO DIRECT SERVICES. THE NUMBER OF HOURS WE PUT IN
[01:20:05]
FOR THOSE DIRECT SERVICES WAS 1796. WHAT I WANT TO POINT OUT HERE IS WE DID ROB PETER TO PAY PAUL SO TO SPEAK. OUR NUMBERS FOR THE CITY REMAIN. I CONTINUED ON.O FAR THIS YEAR WERE AT HUNDRED AND 65 BELLFLOWER RESIDENTS THAT WERE SEEN DIRECTLY UNDER OUR DEPARTMENT OF MENTAL HEALTH CONTRACT. THE HOURS THAT WE ARE PUTTING IN TO BS STUDENTS IN THE MENTAL HEALTH CONTRACT IS 2567. SO 95 OF THOSE HUNDRED 65 BELLFLOWER RESIDENTS ARE BE UST KIDS. WHERE CITY CBS USE KIDS. THAT'S GOING TO STRONG AS EVER.IF INCREASED WHAT WERE DOING HAPPY PEOPLE ON SITE UNDER THIS CONTRACT.
WE RECEIVED REFERRALS FROM ALL 15 SCHOOLS. 11 OF THEM PRODUCED THE DIRECT SERVICES. WE INCREASED, IF YOU DO THE NUMBERS IN THE MOUTH WE INCREASE THE NUMBER OF KIDS WE SAW AT UST WITH THIS CONTRACT BY 90 PERCENT.
WHICH IS PRETTY SIGNIFICANT. WE ALSO DID 2 OTHER THINGS WHILE WERE HERE.
WE HAD 2 PARENTING WORKSHOPS BOTH IN ENGLISH AND SPANISH. TO THE PARENTS ON STRESS MANAGEMENT FOR THE STUDENTS. 2 PRESENTATIONS TO THE PARENTS ON GRIEF AND LOSS.
TIMELY, UNFORTUNATELY. ONCE GO MY PRESENTATION ON STRESS MANAGEMENT.
THAT IS OUR PRESENTATION TO YOU. DON'T KNOW IF YOU GUYS HAVE ANY
QUESTIONS OR ANYTHING? >> IDEAL. SO PART OF YOUR TRAUMA DOESN'T INCLUDE THE PTSD? TRAINING?
>> AND THE YOUNGER KIDS S CPP THE CHILD HOTHERAPY AND THE PC IT IS TECHNICALLY A TRAUMA
EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE POSSIBLE. >> SORT YOUR REFERRALS ARE COMING FROM TEACHERS, PRINCIPALS, CASE MANAGERS, CARRY CONNECTIONS, CAN YOU ELABORATE ABOUT THAT? AND YOU TALK ABOUT FUNDING. HE SAID MOSTLY IT'S COMING THROUGH YOUR MENTAL HEALTH FUNDING FOR THE CITY. THE DISTRICT HAS A SHARED COST
AND THAT SINCE WERE PROVIDING YOU THE SPACE? >> WE RUN THE 2 SEPARATELY.
THE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH CONTRACT WE DO WE DO DIRECTLY OUT OF OUR MAIN OFFICES.
WE DON'T MIX IT WITH THAT BE UST CONTRACT THAT WE DO. >> IF I MAY.
THERE WERE CONTRACT WITH DEPARTMENT OF MENTAL HEALTH FOR STUDENTS OR FAMILIES ON MEDI-CAL. WE USED ONE OF THE PLANS YOU APPROVED LAST YEAR WAS THAT IT FELT TO PLAN. THAT IS WHERE WE ARE FUNDING THE SERVICES FOR OUR KIDS AT THIS POINT. AND HAVING THOSE THERAPISTS ON CAMPUS AND INCREASING THE LEVEL
OF THERAPY AVAILABLE TO OUR STUDENTS ON CAMPUSES. >> RIGHT.
I THINK I GOT CONFUSED WHEN HE STARTED TALKING ABOUT THE CITY RESIDENTS SOME OF THOSE
PORTIONS ARE STUDENTS. >> I WAS TRYING TO POINT OUT WITH GIVEN YOU THOSE DOUBTS WAS THAT HAS NOT DECREASED AND THEY HAVE NOT LET THAT GO. IN FACT IT'S AS STRONG AS EVER.
WERE SERVING 90 PERCENT MORE KIDS BASICALLY. BECAUSE OF THE CONTRACT.
>> RIGHT. THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU DO. >> DO WE HAVE ANY OTHER
QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? I WANT TO THANK YOU. >> I COMMIT YOU ON YOUR WORK.
IT'S A TOUGH JOB WE'VE BEEN GOING THROUGH TOUGH TIMES THESE PAST 2 YEARS.
THANK YOU. >> WE GOT UP AND ROLLING BY THE TIME EVERYTHING WAS SET UP IN SEPTEMBER. WE'VE DONE ALL THAT SINCE SEPTEMBER.
IT'S PRETTY IMPRESSIVE NUMBERS I THINK. WE REALLY ENJOYED WORKING WITH THE STAFF HERE AND WORKING WITH THE SCHOOL DISTRICT. WE THINK WHAT YOU GUYS ARE
DOING IS CUTTING EDGE STUFF. >> WE APPRECIATE THAT SO MUCH. PLEASE CONTINUE TO RENEW THOSE CONTRACTS AND GET THE SERVICES TO OUR CHILDREN AND OUR FAMILIES.
>> THANK YOU.> I WOULD LIKE TO GIVE SOME OF THIS CREDIT TO MRS. BONNIE CARTER.
THE VISION MAY HAVE BEEN MINE AND PARTNERS FROM COMMUNITY FAMILY GUIDANCE BUT WAS HEADED OFF TO HER TO MAKE A REALITY AND SHE WORKED CLOSELY WITH THE CFG, CITY STAFF TO MAKE A RALLY. SHE DESERVES THAT RECOGNITION AS WELL.
>> THANK YOU BONNIE. [APPLAUSE]. I THANK YOU COMMUNITY FAMILY
[01:25:03]
GUIDANCE CENTER. THANK YOU. >> NEXT UP WE HAVE MRS. [NAME]
ON A RECENTLY DEMOGRAPHIC STUDY. >> THANK YOU.
GOOD EVENING BOARD PRESIDENT AND BOARD MEMBERS. WE HAVE A DEMOGRAPHIC STUDIES CONDUCTED BY TOTAL SCHOOL SOLUTIONS BACK IN 2020 FOR THE DISTRICT.
WE ASKED FOR AN UPDATED STUDY BECAUSE THE DECLINE WAS GREATER THAN THE PROJECTED.
X-RAYS THE PREVIOUS ONE. WE WERE PROJECTED TO HAVE AN ENROLLMENT OF 10,642 STUDENTS THIS ACADEMIC YEAR AND INSTEAD ENDED UP WITH 10,176. WHICH IS 466 LESS STUDENTS THAN PROJECTED. THIS INFORMATION IS ESSENTIAL IN HELPING TO PREPARE BUDGETS AND LONGER-RANGE PLANS. TONIGHT I WANT TO PROVIDE IT WITH HIGHLIGHTS OF THE REPORT LEADING TO A SUMMARY REGARDING THE DISTRICT ENROLLMENT. BASED ON THE FULL REPORT THAT WAS PROVIDED TO YOU. FOR THIS STUDY DOCTOR SAMET PHILOLOGY WAS BIRTHS AND KINDERGARTEN TRENDS. HISTORICAL COHORT MOVEMENT AND MIGRATION PATTERNS.
AGE DISTRIBUTION, RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPMENT, PRIVATE SCHOOL ENROLLMENT IN HIGH SCHOOL NUTRITION. THE METHODOLOGY THAT WAS USED AS A TOP-DOWN APPROACH WHICH MEANS THAT THE DISTRICT NUMBERS WERE LOOKED AT FIRST AND THEN INDIVIDUAL SCHOOLS.
SO BIRTHS AND CAN ACCREDIT TRENDS. BIRTHS PROVIDE FUTURE CATEGORY ARE SPARED BY CORRELATING BIRTH, GUARDED PUPILS 5 YEARS LATER A REASONABLE PROJECTION OF FUTURE TK AND KATE PUPILS CAN BE MADE. THE STUDY PROVIDES INFORMATION REGARDING THE FERTILITY RATE OF LOS ANGELES COUNTY. IN 2008 IT WAS 2.14.
IN 2019 IT HAS DROPPED TO 1.66. MEANING, MOST FAMILIES ARE HAVING TO KIDS AT THE MOST.
SO THIS IS AFFECTING BELLFLOWER'S CANDOR ENROLLMENT AS YOU SEE FROM THE NUMBERS ON THE SLIDE. IN 2017 WE HAD 963. THIS YEAR WE HAVE 690.
WE ARE PROJECTED TO GO UP TO 743 IN 2024 AND THAT IS BECAUSE IT'S BELIEVED THAT THE STEEP DECLINE IN 2020 AND 2021 WAS COVID RELATED. THE OTHER FACTOR.
HE LOOKS UP AS THE COHORT LOSS AND IMPACT. HOW MANY STUDENTS ARE LOSING FROM ONE GRADE LEVEL TO THE NEXT? HERE YOU SEE THE LOSS YEAR-BY-YEAR OF THE TOTAL LOSS OVER THE LAST 5 YEARS. SO, OVER THE LAST 5 YEARS IN OUR 6 COHORT WE'VE LOST 965 STUDENTS. 413 AND ARE 7 THROUGH 12 MAKING IT A TOTAL OF 1378 DISTRICT WIDE. THEN THE STUDY TOOK THE PREVIOUS INFORMATION THAT HAS JUST BEEN SHARED WITH THE OTHER FACTORS TO PROVIDE DISTRICT PROJECTIONS FOR THE NEXT 10 YEARS. IN 2026 ? 27 WE ARE PROJECTED TO HAVE 8374 STUDENTS. WHICH IS A LOSS OF 1802 STUDENTS FROM HER CURRENT ENROLLMENT AND THEN GOING DOWN 10 YEARS FROM NOW TO 7227. SCHOOL PROJECTIONS ARE PREPARED USING SCHOOL HISTORICAL ENROLLMENTS, COHORT, GUARDED DATA.
IN THIS LINE YOU SEE EACH SCHOOL LOOKING AT ENROLLMENT FOR THE NEXT 5 YEARS.
SO BAXTER IS PROJECTED TO BE AT 285. I WILL GO THROUGH EVERY SINGLE SCHOOL BUT YOU CAN SEE A BREAKDOWN TO THE 26 ? 27 GOING DOWN TO 263.
OUR HIGH SCHOOLS, BELLFLOWER MIDDLE SCHOOL DEXTER LOOKING AT 2015.
THE GOING DOWN TO 1000 577. DISTRICT WIDE AND 26/27 HAS STATED PREVIOUSLY 8488.
THROUGH THIS STUDY IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE DISTRICT HAS EXPERIENCED SIGNIFICANT ENROLLMENT TO CLIENTS AND WILL CONTINUE TO EXPERIENCE SIGNIFICANT DECLINES OVER THE NEXT 10 YEARS. AS LARGER COHORTS OF 12TH GRADERS LEAVE US AND ARE REPLACED BY SMALLER ENTERING COHORTS WE WILL SEE MORE ATTRITION.
THIS IS AGAIN DUE TO THE FEWER BIRTHS AND IT IS BELIEVED COVID SPED UP SOME OF THE PROJECTED DECLINE. THE DISTRICT WILL BE USING THIS INFORMATION FOR FUTURE PLANNING AS WE LOOK AT SOME OF OUR LONG-TERM PLANS THAT MAY BE NEED TO BE MADE BASED ON THIS
[01:30:03]
INFORMATION. THANK YOU. >> THANK YOU.
DO WE HAVE ANY COMMENTS OR QUESTIONS? >> AT THIS TIME MRS. HOLGATE WILL SHORT UPDATE ON THE MAYFLOWER STATE BUILDING AND ASSISTING HER TAN BUFFINGTON DIRECTORS OF OPERATIONS, MRS. LISA AND SEE ME FROM PRINCIPAL MR. SEAN DIAZ.
>> YES, GOOD EVENING AGAIN AND ON A BRIGHTER NOTE ESTEEM BUILDING UPDATE.
TONIGHT WE WILL PROVIDE YOU WITH ESTEEM BUILDING UPDATE. THE PROJECT IS A LITTLE OVER 80 PERCENT COMPLETE THE SLATED COMPLETION OF OCTOBER 2022. WE'LL START WITH THE RECENT
ARIAL NARRATED VIEW OF OUTSIDE OF THE BUILDING. >> THIS IS THE SOUTHWEST CORNER OF THE BUILDING. WHICH THIS LOWER ROOF HAS ADDED MEDTRONIC'S BOB, PRODUCE CTE PROGRAM. THE BLACK COATING YOU SEE ON THE BUILDING IS ACTUALLY A SILICONE BASED WATERPROOF MEMBRANE ECHOES UNDER THE METAL FINDING THAT YOU WILL SEE BEING INSTALLED. THE METAL CLADDING IS ACTUALLY 2 SHEETS OF ALUMINUM WITH A POLYMER IN BETWEEN THE SHEETS TO MAKE THEM VERY DURABLE AND RESISTANT TO DAMAGE.
YOU WILL SEE THE REFERENCE ON TOP OF THE ROOF COMPLETING THE WATERPROOF MEMBRANE AND THE PREPARING TO INSTALL THE PERMANENT ROOFING ON THE STRUCTURE WRAPPING AROUND THE EAST SIDE OF THE BUILDING. THE WINDOW 10 VIEW RIGHT NOW THE CORNER OF THE BUILDING, THOSE ARE THE CTE PACKS AND PATTERSON LAB. THAT SECOND FLOOR.
ROLLING AROUND NORTHVIEW OF THE STRUCTURE. THIS IS THE MAIN ENTRANCE TO THE BUILDING FROM THE CAMPUS. THIS IS WHERE THE LECTURE HALL IS LOCATED AND THE CITY FOR GUEST SPEAKERS. THE GENTLEMAN IN THE BASKET IS INSTALLING THE GLAZING AND THE TRIM AROUND THE WINDOWS TO COMPLETE THE WATERPROOFING IN THAT ALCOVE.
THE WEST ENTRANCE TO THE BUILDING FROM THE EXTERIOR, THIS IS CALLED STAIR NUMBER ONE. IT GOES INTO THE HALLWAY LEADING TO THE CENTER PORTION OF THE BUILDING. IN THE CENTER OF THIS BUILDING ON THE ROOF AS WE CAN NOW SEE
IS THE SKYLIGHT ILLUMINATES THE CENTER STAIR SECTION. >> THANK YOU MR. BUFFINGTON FOR ABOUT NARRATION. AS YOU CAN SEE IT'S COME A LONG WAY.
WE ALSO ADDITIONALLY HERE OUR INTERIOR PROGRESS YOU SEE PICTURES OF THE FIRST FLOOR WHICH WILL HAVE STADIUM SEATING FOR INDOOR PRESENTATIONS AND UP STAIR WALKWAYS AND BALCONY VIEWS AS WELL. ON THE UPSTAIRS FLOOR. THE INTERIOR STORAGE AND FINISHES ARE ALSO BEING WORKED ON. THE CLASSROOMS WILL HAVE PLENTY OF STORAGE. THIS IS SOME OF THOSE PICTURES ARE ABLE TO SEE THERE.
THAT WE MOVE ON. THIS BUILDING AS YOU KNOW WILL HAVE 2 FLOORS.
THE FIRST FLOOR WILL HOUSE THE INDOOR PRESENTATION STADIUM SEATING ALONG WITH MATH, BIOLOGY, ARE CLASSROOMS WHICH INCLUDE CERAMICS AND A DIGITAL ART MATH LAB.
CLASSROOMS HAVE SLIDING DOORS TO ALLOW STUDENTS TO GO FROM A LECTURE TO ALLOW BURKE.
BOTH FLOORS WILL HAVE 2 STUDENT COMMON AREAS. HERE IS THE LAYOUT FOR THE SECOND FLOOR WHICH HAS AN EXTERIOR BALCONY ACCESS.OME OF OUR CAREER TECHNICAL PATHWAY CLASSES WILL BE HOUSED ON THE SECOND FLOOR. THE TEACHER COLLABORATION IS ALSO LOCATED ON THE SECOND FLOOR. HERE WE BEGIN TO SEE THE FURNITURE THAT HAS BEEN SELECTED FOR THE BUILDING WITH COLLABORATION AS A FOCUS.
[01:35:06]
THIS CONCEPT THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING BOTH IN OPEN SPACES AND CLASSROOMS. HERE YOU GET TO SEE A DIFFERENT VIEW OF THE DIFFERENT SPACES THAT OPENED.ADDITIONALLY THE FLEXIBILITY OF THE FURNITURE SELECTED ALLOWS FOR ADAPTATION.
ABLE TO SEE FLEXIBILITY FOR SMALL-GROUP AND COLLABORATIVE APPROACH WE WILL SHOW YOU DIFFERENT DESIGNS OF THOUGHT. A TRADITIONAL CLASSROOM. GIVE A MORE SET STILL BE ABLE TO BE FLEXIBLE AND ANOTHER SET UP AS YOU SEE THE .
FROM A TRADITIONAL CLASSROOM YOU CAN GO INTO A LARGE DISCUSSION SET UP.
THEN IT CAN BE ARRANGED FOR INDIVIDUAL TASKS WITH CASTERS ARE ON ALL THE INDIVIDUAL DESKS ALLOWING FOR SMALL GROUP SET UP OR EVEN A LARGER GROUP SET UP. THE ART CLASSROOM FURNITURE IS DESCRIBED TO BE A CUSTOM THICK MAPLE BUTCHER BLOCK 6 FOOT RECTANGLE TOPPLES WITH INDUSTRIAL STUDENTS FOR STUDENT CITY. THIS WILL MAXIMIZE THE SPACE OF FLEXIBLE DATE FOR ART FORMS OF PROJECT WITHIN THE ART CLASSROOMS. NOW I WILL TURN IT OVER TO MR. DIAZ TO SHARE HOW IT WILL ALL COME TOGETHER AS HE WORKS WITH THE DISTRICT STAFF TO TRANSITION INSTRUCTION UPON COMPLETION INTO THE NEW STEAM
BUILDING AT MAYFAIR. >> THANK YOU. PRESIDENT ARMSTRONG, BOARD MEMBERS, DISTRICT COLLEAGUES. I'M GONNA START MY LITTLE DISCUSSION WITH THE END IN MIND. AT THE BOTTOM I'VE CHALLENGED BY STAFF AT MANY OF YOU THE BE WATER CONCEPT. OUR NAVIGATE TOMORROW. GONNA FIND A WAY TO BE MORE SUCCESSFUL AND COLLABORATIVE. THE MOMENT I GOT THERE, THERE'S A LOT OF ENERGY AND EXCITEMENT.
WITH THE 80 PERCENT COMPLETION OF THIS BUILDING. PEOPLE SEE IT ON A DAILY BASIS.
T'S A CONSTANT REMINDER WE ARE CLOSE TO MOVING IN. WITH THAT END IN MIND THERE IS A LOT OF EXCITEMENT AND ENERGY BEHIND IT. WANTED TO START WITHOUT SPEAKING WITH THE END IN MIND. LOOKING FORWARD TO OCTOBER, NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER WE TRANSITION TO THE BUILDING AS QUICKLY AS WE CAN. TALK ABOUT TRANSITION PLAN.
STAFF IS HEAVILY INVOLVED IN THE PROCESS.AVE A NUMBER OF TEACHERS THAT ARE EXCITED HAVING THE OPPORTUNITY TO TEACH AND DO THEIR CTE WORK. THE ARTWORK, THEIR SCIENCE, THEIR MOUTH ALL THE THINGS THAT GO INTO ESTEEMED BUILDING TO TAKE PLACE.
OUR STUDENTS ARE EXCITED. ON A DAILY BASIS I COULD ASK I TAKE IT TO WORK.
I HAVE TO SLOW THEM DOWN, IT'S NOT QUITE READY FOR THAT. THAT STUDENTS AND STAFF.HE INVOLVEMENT OF THE STAFF AS WE ARE COLLABORATING BECAUSE WE ARE GOING TO HAVE TO TRANSITION IN THERE. WERE GOING TO BE MOVING OUT OF OUR TEMPORARY BUILDINGS AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR AND WITH THE ABILITY AND THE REASON THE STAFF IS EXCITED IS THERE SEE THE PROGRESS BEING MADE THE UNDERSTAND THAT THERE MOVING OUT OF THOSE BUILDING SO WE CAN MOVE IN FASTER. THEY'RE ALL REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THAT.
THE B WING AS IT STANDS IS THE CURRENT PORTABLE WING. EVERY SHARED DOCUMENT, SHARED DOCUMENT PUTTING ON HOW THEY CAN SUPPORT THEMSELVES MOVING. WERE ENGAGING OUR STAFFING INTERIM PLAN BASED ON THAT TRANSITION. TEACHERS ARE GOING TO INSTRUCT WHERE THEY ARE GOING TO INSTRUCT IN THE FINAL PHASES OF THE CONSTRUCTION MEETING IN THE FALL SEMESTER AS WE TRANSITION THE MIDDLE OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. OUR WHOLE ENTIRE GOAL AND FOCUS IS MINIMIZING THE IMPACT ON STUDENT STAFF AND DISRUPTION OF INSTRUCTION.
WE WANT TO BE AS CONSTANT AS POSSIBLE. WERE ENGAGING EVERYONE IN THE CONVERSATION. THE COLLABORATION SUPPORT WE RECEIVED FROM HER DISTRICT COLLEAGUES, LISA, AND THE COLLAPSE PROGRAM AND THE TEACHERS AND THE ADMINISTRATORS. ALL THOSE CONVERSATIONS ARE REALLY CRUCIAL TO THIS TRANSACTION. WORKING WITH TECHNOLOGY TO GET TECHNOLOGY OUT OF CURRENT EXISTING CLASSROOMS. MAKE SURE THE CLASSROOMS ARE READY TO GO HAS BEEN HANDLE BY DENA SOBOL AND HER STAFF. THEN SUPPORT OUR MTO GROUP ISN'T GREAT.
>> ARE SIGNS OF OUR TEAMS ARE CURRENTLY I WOULD SAY FIGHTING BUT THEY'RE HAVING ROBUST CONVERSATIONS ABOUT WHICH TEACHERS GET TO BE A WITCH ROOM.
WORKING TOGETHER THROUGH THAT. THERE ARE SOME NEEDS AND ROOMS THAT ARE SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR CERTAIN CONTENT AREA. THERE ARE OTHERS THAT WE HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF FLEXIBILITY.
PUTTING THIS FINAL STAGES TOGETHER THE CONVERSATIONS WITH OUR DEPARTMENTS.
THAT WILL CONTINUE HEAVILY ON MONDAY AND CONTINUE THROUGH THE REST OF THE SCHOOLYARD.
THE BODY IS A GO BACK TO THE END IN MIND IS EXCITED AND HAS HIGH-ENERGY AROUND THIS PROJECT. WE ARE VERY LOOKING FORWARD TO MOVING IN THAT BUILDING AS SOON
AS WE POSSIBLY CAN. THANK YOU. >> THANK YOU.
YOUR TIMEFRAME IS RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF ACADEMIC SCHOOL. I'M JUST CURIOUS, HOW DO YOU PLAN TO TRANSITION AND KEEP STUDENTS ON TARGET WITH THE ACADEMICS?
[01:40:01]
>> THERE ARE SEVERAL CONTENT AREA CLASSROOMS WOULD BE EASIER TO MOVE DURING THE MIDDLE OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. OBVIOUSLY IF WE ARE ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH THAT AND DO SO WE WANT TO BE ABLE TO DO THAT AS QUICKLY AS ACCOUNT. HOWEVER, IF IT HAS ANY IMPACT AND IT CAN'T BE DONE AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE ARE ALWAYS A GOOD HAVE TO WAIT SLOW DOWN A LITTLE BIT. HAVE THE ABILITY TO MOVE LIKE A MATH CLASS EASIER THAN WE WOULD SAY A BIO AND A BANANA MAKER LAB OR WOODSHOP. SO WHEN WE CAN WE ARE GOING TO TRY AND TRANSITION AS QUICKLY AS WE POSSIBLY CAN. AGAIN, WHERE IT'S COMPARABLE
FEASIBLE IN A QUICK FASHION. >> I WAS THINKING OF THE THANKSGIVING BREAK.
I KNOW THIS LATER. >> THERE ARE SOME OPPORTUNITIES AROUND THAT TIME.
THAT WORKING OUT. >> AGAIN, OR ALL EXCITED ABOUT GETTING IN THERE.
>> OF COURSE, IT'S PLANNING AND STRATEGIC. >> OR WORKING.
>> THANK YOU. >> ARE WE PLANNING TO COMMINGLE STUDENTS FROM OTHER CAMPUSES
ONTO THE EXISTING BUILDING? >> AND OF THE COLLAPSE CURRENT. WE ARE SPREAD OUT.
>> RIGHT NOW MY FOCUS IS ON THE STUDENTS CURRENTLY ENROLLED AT MAYFLOWER APPEARED WITHIN THE BELL SCHEDULE. ANOTHER IS GOING TO BE DISCUSSION OF THAT AS CAL ALPS.
THERE'S A PARTNERSHIP WE GREATLY VALUE. MY PRIMARY FOCUS IS YOU.
>> YOU NOT SURE IF IT'S GOTTA BE CO-MINGLED OR NOT? >> I DON'T HAVE THAT INFORMATION AT THIS POINT. I WOULD ASK LISA TO RESPOND ABOUT.
>> YES, IF YOU DON'T MIND SHARING A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE CAL ALPS OF THE CTE PROGRAMS. THANK YOU. JUST TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION MR. JENNINGS.
THERE'S A POSSIBILITY OF CAL ALPS OFFERING FOR EXAMPLE THE BIO AND MAKER COURSE AFTER SCHOOL. WITHIN OUR PROGRAM THAT WOULD TAKE PLACE AFTER THE BIO MAKER LAB SORRY SET UP ON SITE FUNCTIONING WITHIN THE DAYTIME. THERE IS A POSSIBILITY TO BRING STUDENTS FROM OTHER CAMPUSES BUT THAT WOULD BE WITHIN THE AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM WITH
COLLAPSE. >> DURING THE DAYTIME WERE NOT COMMINGLING?
>> NO, DURING THE DAYTIME IT WILL BE FOR MAYFLOWER. >> THANK YOU.
>> ANYTHING ELSE FOR ME? >> THANKS AGAIN FOR THE OPPORTUNITY.
I'M REALLY EXCITED. >> PEGGY MR. DEAS. LIKE MR. DEAS SAID WERE LOOKING FORWARD TO THE STATE-OF-THE-ART BUILDING AND REPLACING THIS PICTURE WITH ME THERE STUDENTS
WERE DONE. THANK YOU. >> THANK YOU.
WE HAVE A QUICK COMMENT. >> I WANT TO SAY THANK YOU SO MUCH TO OUR STAFF FOR PUTTING THIS PRESENTATION TOGETHER. REALLY DOES BRING THIS TO LIFE. THAT WE ARE STAKEHOLDER'S GO-AHEAD AND SEE THE AMAZING THINGS WE ARE DOING ON THAT CAMPUS.
WHAT OUR STUDENTS LOOKING FORWARD TO A WHOLE. THE USING IN THE FUTURE.THANK YOU SO MUCH. ONE QUICK QUESTION. WILL THIS PRESENTATION AND THE
PICTURES ALSO BE AVAILABLE ON OUR WEBSITE? >> YES.
DUMB EXTREAM IF SOMEONE WANTS TO LISTEN TO THE PRESENTATION WILL BE ABLE TO DO IT ON THE LIFESTREAM. ALSO IN OUR BST DUES WE ATTACH ALL THE POWER POINTS AND TRANSLATE THE INFORMATION IN SPANISH AS WELL. THEY'RE ALWAYS THERE AS PART OF THE NEWS. HE SAID THAT OUT TO ALL OF OUR PARENTS SO THEY GET THAT INFORMATION RIGHT TO OUR WATCHES, THEIR PHONES, THEIR EMAILS.
>> WONDERFUL, THAT'S GREAT. LET'S ALSO BE LIKE MAY BE ON A TAB ON OUR WEBSITE THOUGH? SO PARENTS CAN CONTINUE TO ACCESS IT IF THEY DON'T GET IT THROUGH THE UST NEWS.
>> THE BS YOU DELETE NEWS IS ON A TAB. IT HAS ALL OF THE NEWS SINCE WE STARTED 2021. THE ARCHIVED THERE. YOU GO BACK AND READ ALL OF
THEM SINCE WE STARTED. >> GREAT, THANK YOU SO MUCH. >> THANK YOU.
OKAY WE HAVE ANOTHER ONE, RIGHT? >> WE DEAL.
THE NEXT PRESENTATION IS GOING TO BE GIVEN BY DOCTOR DEIRDRE REYES DOCTOR OF ACADEMIC ACCOUNTABILITY. SHE IS KOSHER WHERE WE ARE WITH AL DEVELOPMENT IN THE PROCESS AND SOME OF THE FEEDBACK AND THE DATA WE'VE RECEIVED. FROM THE SURVEY THAT'S HELPING
US INFORMED THE DRAFT OF RL. >> OKAY, GOOD EVENING PRESIDENT ARMSTRONG AND BOARD MEMBERS,
[01:45:06]
SUPERINTENDENT MAX BARON CABINET. TONIGHT GOING TO UPDATE YOU ON THAT PROCESS AND PROVIDE YOU WITH A SUMMARY OF THE FEEDBACK WE PERCEIVED FROM HER EDUCATIONAL PARTNERS. THE PROCESS OF GATHERING INPUT FROM EDUCATIONAL PARTNERS IS ONGOING THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. THE PROCESS FOR THIS YEAR IS DRAWING TO A CLOSE.AS WE COMPLETE THE 22/23 FOR REVIEW AND APPROVAL AT THE JUNE BOARD MEETING.
MARCH THE SURVEY WAS SENT OUT TO ALL EDUCATIONAL PARTNERS. STUDENTS IN FIFTH THROUGH 12TH GRADE TEACHERS AND STAFF, ADMINISTRATORS AND PARENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS.
THE RESPONSES WERE ANALYZED AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE SLIDE THEY WERE PRESENTED AT OUR DAG PACK MEETING IN APRIL. THE INPUT IS USED TO MAKE ADJUSTMENTS TO THE 22/23.
AT THE MAY 18 MEETING WHICH IS UPCOMING WILL SHARE HOW THE FEEDBACK INFORMS THE UPCOMING AL WITH DAG PACK ANTILOCK ANALYSTS. THE WILL BE PRESENTED TO YOU AT THE JUNE BOARD MEETING. SO LET'S TAKE A LOOK AT THE RESULTS OF THE SURVEY.
THE FIRST PART OF THE SURVEY PROVIDES EDUCATIONAL PARTNERS WITH A LIST OF THE INITIATIVES AND ACTIONS THAT ARE CURRENTLY IN THE ALCALA. ASKS IF THEY FEEL THEY SHOULD BE MAINTAINED OR INCREASED. THE NEXT FEW SLIDES WILL SHOW THESE ACTIONS AND HOW THEY WERE PRIORITIZED FOR INCREASED EFFORTS BY OUR EDUCATIONAL PARTNERS.
THE FIRST GROUP IS SMALL CLASS SIZE. ACADEMIC SUPPORT, ENRICHMENT ELECTIVES, HIGH SCHOOL CREDIT RECOVERY IN THE SUMMER AND HIGH SCHOOL ORIGINAL CREDIT DURING THE SUMMER. SO, THE GRAPH IS COLOR-CODED GROUP.
THE FIRST ONE YOU SEE IS ALL EVERYONE TOGETHER. THE NEXT ONE ARE OUR PARENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS. STAFF, TEACHERS ADMINISTRATORS AND STUDENTS.
THEY'LL FOLLOW THE CORRIDOR COUNTING FOR THE NEXT FEW GRAPHS.
CONCEIVING THE FIRST ONE ACADEMIC SUPPORT AND ENRICHMENT AND ELECTIVES RECEIVE THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF SUPPORT TO INCREASE AVERAGE. MOVING ONTO THE NEXT GROUP CAREER PATHWAYS, COMMUNICATION WITH STUDENTS ABOUT COLLEGE AND CAREER OPPORTUNITIES.
COMMUNICATIONS WITH PARENTS WITH CAREER COLLEGE OPPORTUNITIES.
STEM ACTIVITIES CAL ASK COURSES. THIS IS WHAT THE GRAPH LOOKS LIKE FOR THIS GROUP OF ACTIONS. YOU CAN SEE WE'VE GOT IS VINCE BRIAN WAS SUPPORT FOR CAREER PATHWAYS COMING OUT FRONT WITH ALL OF OUR EDUCATIONAL PARTNERS.
NEXT LIST OF PARTIES LOOKED AT FACILITIES, CLEAN FACILITIES, SAVE FACILITIES, GUIDANCE, SLE SUPPORT, HOMESCHOOL EDUCATION, FAMILY ENGAGEMENT AND PARENT LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES.
SO, WE HAVE A TABLE HERE FOR THIS MORNING. BOTH CLEAN AND SAFE SCHOOL FACILITIES WERE SELECTED AS PRIORITIES TO INCREASE ACTIONS AND OUR STAFF AND ADMINISTRATORS ALSO VERY STRONGLY SUPPORTED COUNSELING AND GUIDANCE SUPPORTS AS EL SUPPORT.
THE NEXT PART OF THE SURVEY LOOKED AT SUBJECT AREAS AND ASKED WHICH SUBJECT AREAS TO EDUCATIONAL PARTNERS PRIORITIZE FOR INCREASING STUDENT OUTCOMES.
IT GOES ALONG WITH HIS BEACHLINE CTE RECEIVED STRONG SUPPORT FROM STUDENTS, TEACHERS AND PARENTS. WE RECEIVED A LOT OF SUPPORT FOR INCREASING TO PROVIDE
STUDENT OUTCOMES. >> WITHIN LOOKED AT SOME OF THE INSTRUCTIONAL PROGRAMS AND ASKED HER EDUCATIONAL PARTNERS TO PRIORITIZE THOSE FOR INCREASING EFFORTS.
YOU CAN SEE THERE'S A LOT OF STRONG SUPPORT HERE FOR INCREASING EFFORTS PARTICULARLY IN PROJECT-BASED LEARNING STEAM, CTE AND CIVIC CITIZENSHIP AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMS. THE FOLLOWING CHARTS WERE GOING TO LOOK AT PARENT RESPONSES FOR THE OPPORTUNITIES FOR INVOLVEMENT. AND AS FOR HER TO SEE BECAUSE THE QUESTIONS WERE LENGTHY. I'LL BRIEFLY TELL YOU WHAT THEY WERE.
JUST SO YOU KNOW THIS OR PARENT RESPONSES AND WERE ASKING OUR PARENTS THEY ARE EXPRESSING
[01:50:01]
THAT THEY STRONGLY AGREE OR THEY AGREED. THAT'S WHAT THE PERCENTAGE REPRESENTS. THE FIRST ONE IS OUR SCHOOLS HAVE A SYSTEM THAT ALLOW TO COMMUNICATE LEADERS TO COMMUNICATE THAT ALLOW SCHOOL LEADERS TO COMMUNICATE ABOUT SAFETY ISSUES. YOU CAN SEE STRONG SUPPORT FOR THAT.E PROVIDE FAMILIES WITH INFORMATION AND RESOURCES TO SUPPORT STUDENT LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT AT HOME.TEACHERS MEET WITH FAMILIES TO DISCUSS PROGRESS. PARENTS ARE THEY VISITING THE SCHOOL WEBSITE? DO THEY AGREE THE SCHOOL WEBSITE IS INTERACTIVE? DO THEY AGREE THE SCHOOL USES SOCIAL MEDIA TO COMMUNICATE? DOES THE SCHOOL HOLD TOWN HALL MEETINGS? DOES THE SCHOOL HOLD FOCUS MEETINGS WITH EDUCATIONAL PARTNERS? AND DOES THE SCHOOL HOLD MEETINGS THAT ARE CONVENIENT TIMES AND LOCATIONS FOR OUR PARENTS? ARE MATERIALS PROVIDED THE PRIMARY LANGUAGE OF THE MEETINGS? THE LAST ONE THERE IS THE DISTRICT PROVIDES OPPORTUNITIES FOR PARENTS TO ATTEND WORKSHOPS AND PARTICIPATE IN LEARNING SESSIONS RELATED TO STUDENTS SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH.
YOU CAN SEE THOSE PERCENTAGES AND THEY REPRESENT PARENTS STRONGLY, AGREE OR AGREE WITH
THE STATEMENTS I JUST READ TO YOU. >> ON THE ONE QUESTION WITH A UNDERSTAND REGARDS TO THE LEADERS AT MY SCHOOL CONDUCT FOCUS MEETINGS, STUDENTS, PARENTS AND COMMUNITY. THAT COULD INCLUDE PTA THAT COULD INCLUDE PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES. WITH INCLUDED EVENTS WE HAVE. SO THAT SEEMS TO BE THE LOWEST.
I WAS WONDERING ABOUT SOMETHING MAYBE WASN'T COMMUNICATED CLEARLY?
>> MAYBE THE WORDING WITH FOCUS GROUPS. IT'S ALSO SOMETHING WE DON'T
DO. >> THAT MIGHT BE A POSSIBILITY. >> WITH EXAMPLES I GAVE WOULD
BE REPRESENTATIVE OF THAT. >> I DON'T THINK THAT WOULD BE REFLECTIVE AND ACCURATE SCORING RELATIONSHIP TO WHAT IS GOING ON? THAT'S WHAT I MEAN.> OKAY.
THANK YOU DOCTOR HSU. THE NEXT CHART IS ALSO FOR PARENTS AND ITS QUESTION, A SENTENCE STAMP SAYING MY CHILD SCHOOL. THEY LOOKED AT THE RESPONSES THERE. CAN SEE FROM THIS MORNING, THIS IS THE PERCENTAGE OF PARENTS STRONGLY AGREE AND THE HIGHEST PERCENTAGE IS THERE WITH THE MOST AGREEMENT IS THAT OUR SCHOOL STAFF TRANSPARENT WITH RESPECT AND ALSO AT THE VERY OTHER END OF THE CHART OF THE SCHOOL STAFF IS HELPFUL TO PARENTS. THEY DISPLAY POSITIVE RESULTS FROM THE SURVEY. THE NEXT CHART YOU SEE FOR OUR PARENTS, THE QUESTIONS ARE BASICALLY ON TOP. HOW EASY IS IT TO GET INFORMATION FROM YOUR CHILD SCHOOL? THOSE PERCENTAGES WERE THE PARENTS HAD VERY EASY AND EASY.
THEN WE ASKED PARENTS IN THE SURVEY WHAT WOULD BE A REASON YOU WOULDN'T PARTICIPATE IN SCHOOL ACTIVITIES OR ATTEND A SCHOOL MEETING? WE PROVIDED SOME OF THE POSSIBLE REASONS. PARENTS SELECT IT. WE'LL SEE THAT SCHEDULE AND CONFLICTS WAS THE HIGHEST ONE THERE ALONG WITH YOU KNOW I'M SATISFIED WITH THE SCHOOL.
THE NEXT CHART DISPLAY WAS FOR OUR STUDENTS. SO, THE HIGHEST PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS IF YOU LOOK AT THE SECOND TO THE LAST ONE, THAT 88.15 PERCENT.
IT SAYS STUDENTS AGREED THEY GET HOME WHEN THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND AND ALSO TEACHERS COMMUNICATE WITH THEIR FAMILIES TO DISCUSS PROGRESS ON HOW THEY CAN IMPROVE.
ANOTHER SECTION OF THE SURVEY ASKS OUR EDUCATION PARTNERS HOW FAMILIAR ARE YOU WITH THE COLLEGE AND CAREER OPPORTUNITIES WE HAVE FOR STUDENTS? SO MOVING ONTO THIS GRAPH HERE. THE PARENTS WERE ASKED THE STUDENTS SO BLUE FOR THE PARENTS IN ORANGE FOR THE STUDENTS.HE FIRST QUESTION, HOW FAMILIAR ARE YOU WITH CERRITOS COMPLETE AND HOW FAMILIAR ARE YOU WITH A LONG BEACH CITY COLLEGE EARLY ADMISSIONS PROGRAM. IN THE RESPONSES THEY REPRESENT VERY FAMILIAR AND SOMEWHAT FAMILIAR. THE FINAL ONE IS HOW FAMILIAR ARE OFFERED ARE SECONDARY
[01:55:09]
SCHOOLS? ANOTHER QUESTION FOR OUR PARENTS ASKING THEM THAT THEIR CHILD IS TAKING CLASSES THAT PREFER UNPREPARED FOR COLLEGE AND ALSO THERE TAKING CLASSES THAT PREPARE THEM FOR THEIR CAREER. PARENTS, THIS IS A COMBINATION OF STRONGLY AGREE IN DEGREE FOR BOTH OF THOSE QUESTIONS. AND FINALLY ON THE SURVEY, WE LOOKED AT SCHOOL SAFETY STUDENTS, THIS APPEARED. AGAIN IT'S TOUGH TO SEE BECAUSE WE ASKED KIND OF DETAILED QUESTIONS TO THEM. WITH THEIR CHOICES BUT THERE IS CLEAR AND SPECIFIC RULES AND PROCEDURES THAT TEACHERS AND STAFF KNOW THE EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT PROCEDURES THROUGH SCHOOL. THEY KNOW HOW TO IMPLEMENT THEM. THEY'RE UPDATED ON A REGULAR BASIS.STUDENTS AND PARENTS ARE RARE THE RULES AND PROCEDURES OF SCHOOL.
TEACHERS HAVE ADEQUATE MATERIAL TO TEACH EFFECTIVELY AND TEACHERS HAVE ADEQUATE TIME TO TEACH EFFECTIVELY. THE FINAL ONE IS STUDENTS FEEL CONNECTED AT SCHOOL.
YOU COULD SEE THERE WAS AN EVEN SPREAD ACROSS THE BOARD WITH EDUCATIONAL PARTNERS FOR SAFE AND ORDERLY SCHOOLS. NOW, THERE IS ANOTHER WAY WE CAN INPUT FROM OUR EDUCATIONAL PARTNERS. THIS IS OUR DAG BACK MEETINGS, RD LACK MEETINGS AND OR ADMINISTRATOR MEETINGS. AT THOSE MEETINGS WE PROVIDE OUR EDUCATIONAL PARTNERS WITH OPPORTUNITIES TO LOOK AT THE GOALS AND ACTIONS. LOOK AT THE METRICS I SHARED WITH YOU LAST FEBRUARY AT OUR BOARD MEETING. THEN THEY MEET IN SMALLER GROUPS, DISCUSS THEM AND HAVE A CONVERSATION. WHAT DO THEY THINK THAT THEY LOOK AT THE GOALS AND ACTIONS. WHAT DO WE NEED TO INCREASE? THEN WE TAKE ALL THE FEEDBACK FROM THOSE DIFFERENT MEETINGS, THE DIFFERENT EDUCATION PARTNERS WOULD GO THROUGH EVERYTHING. LOOK FOR THOSE COMMON THINGS. I'M JUST GOING TO TELL YOU WITH IT EACH NAME FOR GOATS. COAT ONE IS BEING UST WILL PROVIDE ALL STUDENTS WITH SAFE, COLLABORATIVE CONDITIONS FOR LEARNING.EVERAL ACTIONS WERE COMMENTED ON THAT BY OUR EDUCATIONAL PARTNERS. SOME OF THE COMMON THINGS THAT WILL SEE THEIR ARE 4 INCREASING EFFORTS WHILE FROM LIMITING OUR COMBO CLASSES. IT SUPPORT TECHNOLOGY, RESTORATIVE JUSTICE. SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING AND SUPPORT FOR OUR ENGLISH LEARNERS. WITH THE GUN TO GOLD TO. WHICH STATE BEING UST WILL PROVIDE ALL STUDENTS WITH THE GUARANTEE AND VIABLE CURRICULUM THROUGH EFFECTIVE.
WE HAVE TO MAKE SURE OUR STUDENTS OR COLLEGE OR CAREER READY.
>> CONTINUING WITH MANY OF THE INTERVENTIONS THAT WE STARTED THIS YEAR.
INCREASING OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS TO GRADUATE HAVING COMPLETED BOTH A THROUGH G REQUIREMENTS AND CTE AND ENROLLMENT AND CTE. ALSO CONTINUING WITH THE SUMMER ACADEMY WHICH IS HAPPENING AND AFTERSCHOOL TUTORING. I WAS CALLED TO.
FINALLY GOAL TO WHICH STATES BEING UST WILL PROVIDE ONGOING COMMUNICATION OPPORTUNITIES FOR EDUCATIONAL PARTNERS TO ADVOCATE FOR THE SUCCESS OF ALL STUDENTS.
REALLY, THE COMMON THEME RUNNING THROUGH THIS FROM ALL OF OUR STAKEHOLDERS, SORRY OUR EDUCATIONAL PARTNERS, CAN WE FIND MULTIPLE WAYS FOR PARENTS TO ENGAGE IN SCHOOL MEETINGS AND WORKSHOPS? THINK HOW WE CAN REACH MORE PARENTS, WANT BUT DIFFERENT CREATIVE THINGS CAN WE DEAL? SO THAT REALLY WENT ALONG VERY WELL WITH A LOT OF THE SURVEY RESULTS. WHAT OUR GROUPS ARE SAYING AS WITH THE SURVEY REPORTED.
AS I MENTIONED AT THE BEGINNING OF THE PRESENTATION THE NEXT STEP WILL BE TO SHARE OF THE INPUT HAS BEEN INCORPORATED AND THAT WILL BE DONE AT THE MAY 18 MEETING WHERE WE INVITE DAG BACK AND HE LACKED TO COME TOGETHER TO GET THAT INFORMATION.
WANTED TO LET YOU KNOW ARE VERY FORTUNATE BECAUSE WE HAVE A VERY ENGAGED GROUP OF EDUCATIONAL PARTNERS. THEY WORK HARD, THEY LOOK AT THE DATA WE PROVIDE FOR THEM AND THEY PROVIDE INPUT ON WHAT IS WORKING WELL AND THEY GIVE US THOUGHTFUL INSIGHT AS TO
[02:00:01]
WHERE WE NEED TO INCREASE OUR EFFORTS. ACHIEVEMENT AND SUCCESS FOR ALL STUDENTS. THAT'S ALWAYS THERE GUIDING PRINCIPLE.HETHER WE AGREE OR DISAGREE IN THE LITTLE GROUP THAT'S ALWAYS THE GUIDING PRINCIPLE.THEIR DILIGENT FEEDBACK ALLOWS US TO HAVE A PRODUCTIVE PROCESS AND BE UST.
ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS? >> YES IDEAL. >> THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
>> DON'T RUN AWAY. YOU'RE QUESTIONING SOMEONE WHO DOES RESEARCH.
>> YES, I KNOW. I'M GONNA GO BACK YOUR PARENTS ABOUT MY CHILD SCHOOL AND THEN RESPONDING. THE REASON I BRING THIS UP IS HAT AGAIN, ONE OF THE QUESTIONS IS, MY CHILD SCHOOL MAKES IT A PRIORITY TO LEARN ABOUT EACH FAMILY STRENGTH, CULTURE AND FAMILY GOALS FOR MY CHILDREN. SO THAT WAS SCORED THE LOWEST. ON THE OTHER SIDE RIGHT NEXT TO IT IT SAYS IT REFLECTS CULTURE DIVERSITY. AGAIN, I THINK PEOPLE AREN'T UNDERSTANDING BECAUSE TO ME THAT IS REFLECTIVE OF THE FIRST ONE THAT SAYS THE LOW SCORE.
I GUESS MY FEEDBACK IS THAT BECAUSE WE USE THIS DATA TO THEN LOOK AT GAPS AND HOW WE CAN IMPROVE PERFORMANCE. IT'S IMPORTANT TO LOOK AT. IF LOOKING AT THIS I'M SAYING, WE NEED TO LOOK AT OUR DIVERSITY. WERE NOT DOING A GOOD JOB RIGHT HERE. WHY IS IT THE FEELING OF NOT BEING SEEN OR IDENTIFIED BASED ON THEIR CULTURE AND ETHNICITY. I WOULD SAY THAT'S A PROBLEM. YET, YOU HAVE THE OTHER
QUESTION. TO SEE WHAT I'M SAYING? >> YES IDEAL.
>> THINK THE QUESTIONS NEED TO BE REALLY, WHEN YOU LOOK AT IT FROM THE FACE VALIDITY PERSPECTIVE. HAS LOW FACE VALIDITY FOR MY PROSPECTIVELY LOOKING AT THE DATA AND ANALYZING IT. I THINK IT'S IMPORTANT BECAUSE AS A BOARD MEMBER CAN LOOK AT THIS AND COME BACK AND SAY, WHAT'S GOING ON HERE? WE NEED TO LOOK AT THIS MORE CLOSELY. THAT'S THE FEEDBACK I'M GETTING.
THAT'S JUST ME. EMILY WILL MAKE SURE. >> IF I MAY, BUT WERE TRYING TO TEASE OUT HERE IS GLOBALLY DO WE RESPECT CULTURAL DIVERSITY? DO WE EXPECT THE DIFFERENCES WE HAVE ON OUR CAMPUSES? THEN THE QUESTION THAT SCORING LOW IS A PERSONAL CONNECTION.
DO I KNOW MRS. GARZA AND HER FAMILY? WHAT PERCENTAGE OF OUR PARENTS FEEL LIKE SOMEBODY ABOUT SCHOOL WAS THEIR FAMILY AND REALLY UNDERSTAND THEIR KID.
NOT THAT WE RESPECT THEIR CULTURE AS A WHOLE. TALK ABOUT EDUCATION FOR US, WE ALL KNOW THAT CONNECTION WITH ONE INDIVIDUAL ON THAT CAMPUS CAN MAKE A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN THE STUDENTS ACHIEVEMENT. THAT'S WHAT WE RETURN TO TEASE OUT HERE.
>> BUT THAT'S NOT STATED HERE ASK IF IT IS. THIS IS MY FAMILY.
>> AS, TO LEARN MY FAMILY VERSUS RESPECTING DIVERSITY. THAT'S A SEPARATION.
ONE IS DO THEY RESPECT ME KNOW ME AS A FAMILY AND KNOW MY NEEDS AND MY GOALS? THE OTHER IS GLOBALLY DO THEY RESPECT DIFFERENT CULTURES. YET WE RESPECT CULTURES GLOBALLY BUT WE NEED TO MAKE A BETTER PIECE ABOUT PERSONAL KNOWING THOSE INDIVIDUALS FAMILY. THEY FEEL COMFORTABLE COMING TO OUR SCHOOL.
WHEN I LOOKED AT THIS DATA I'M SHARING MY PERSPECTIVE AND I SAW THE PIECES WHERE THEY SAID ONE OF THEM THEY DIDN'T FILL WELCOME. THAT CONNECTS TO ME.
THEY DON'T FEEL THAT PERSONAL CONNECTION. SO THAT'S WHAT WE WERE TRYING TO TEASE OUT THERE. MIGHT BE A BETTER WAY TOWARD THAT NEXT YEAR OR TWEAK IT.
THAT'S WHAT THE DIFFERENCE WAS ATTENDED BETWEEN THOSE 2 QUESTIONS.
>> THE ONE IS INDIVIDUAL THE OTHER ONE IS MORE GLOBAL. I THINK IT SHOULD BE TO OUT THAT WAY. AS FAR AS HER GLOBAL PARTNERS, YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT CERRITOS COLLEGE, LONG BEACH CITY COLLEGE, WHO ELSE ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?
IS THAT IT? >> THEY WERE THE 2 SPECIFICALLY CALLED OUT IF THEY WERE KNOWLEDGEABLE FOR THOSE. THEY ARE AVAILABLE TO OUR STUDENTS.
[02:05:03]
JUST WANTED TO SEE HOW FAMILIAR BOTH PARENTS AND STUDENTS WITH THOSE PROGRAMS.>> BOTH OF THOSE PROGRAMS OFFER 2 YEARS FREE COMMUNITY COLLEGE TO OUR STUDENTS.
THAT'S A PRIORITY FOR US TO LET IT PARENTS KNOW THAT RECESS WITH OUR CLIENTELE THE DEMOGRAPHICS PER SCHOOLS NEED THAT RESOURCE TO MAKE SURE WE DO A BETTER JOB.
THAT'S WHY THOSE 2 SPECIFIC PROGRAMS WERE TARGETED. >> I THINK MY WILLS ARE SPENDING ON EXPANSION. I'M JUST THINKING OUT LOUD. WITH MY BOARD MEMBERS S HERE.
>> I I AGREE. >> WHATEVER PARTNERS DO WE NEED TO LOOK AT? WHAT OTHER PARTNERS, EXPAND THAT WOULD OFFER MORE OPPORTUNITIES AND VARIETY TO OUR PARENTS AND STUDENTS AND I'M JUST THINKING OUT LOUD. I HEAR YOU.
>> OR THINKING GROWTH. >> THANK YOU SO MUCH. YOU CAN SIT DOWN NOW.
THANK YOU SO MUCH. >> ORRY. >> THEY KILL.
I AGREE WERE LOOKING FOR EXPANSION AS WELL. ON THE SLIDE THAT SAYS PARENT INVOLVEMENT IN A COUPLE OF THE OTHER SLIDES AS WELL. STATED THERE WAS STRONGLY AGREE OR DISAGREE. MY QUESTION PERTAINS TO, OR THOSE THE OTHER ANSWERS PARENTS
HAD AS CHOICES? >> THOSE ARE STRONGLY AGREE AND AGREE.
>> BUT CAUGHT THOSE OF THE ONLY CHOICES? >> THERE WAS DISAGREEMENTS
STRONGLY DISAGREED. WE WANTED TO HIGHLIGHT THEM. >> THAT'S WHAT WERE SAYING HERE. IF WE WANTED TO SEE THE OTHER INFORMATION THAT IS NOT
INCLUDED IN HERE.OW DO WE GET A HOLD OF THAT? >> I COULD ADD THOSE TO THE
CHARTS FOR YOU SO YOU COULD REVIEW ALL THOSE RESPONSES. >> WONDERFUL.
THAT WOULD BE GREAT. SORRY. THANK YOU.
>> WELL I WANT TO SAY AS A PARENT I DID TAKE THE SURVEY. AND, IT EVEN TELLS YOU THAT IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE KID TO FOCUS ON THE OLDEST ONE I THINK IT IS OR THE YOUNGEST.
IT WAS ONE OF THEM. I CAN'T REMEMBER. THERE WERE THE STRONGLY DISAGREE, DISAGREE AGREE. IT WAS THERE. I WOULD APPRECIATE THE REST OF THE DATED TOO. I LIKE THE WAY IT IS PRESENTED BECAUSE IT REALLY SHOWS WHERE WE ARE. WHERE WE NEED TO IMPROVE. I DO APPRECIATE YOU JUST PUTTING THAT LITTLE BIT OUT THERE. IT'S RUNNING OUR RESEARCHER OUT HERE HAVING EVERY PIECE OF TAPE OUT THERE. IT'S OKAY.
WE WILL GET IT. THANK YOU SO MUCH. >> THANK YOU.
SHOULD I SIT? >> I THANK YOU'RE GOOD. THANK YOU VERY MUCH DOCTOR.
>> I APPRECIATE ALL OF THOSE COMMUNICATIONS TONIGHT. IT'S REALLY NICE TO GET THOSE UPDATES AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO MORE UPDATES AND MORE INFORMATION.
