[00:02:32]
A FORMER OF COLLEAGUE TOLD ME TO BE WATER AND I ASKED WHAT DID HE MEAN BY BEING WATER. HE ANSWERED SIMPLY IT JUST FINDS A WAY. AND AS A SCHOOL LEADER AND EDUCATOR, IT HIT ME TO MY CORE. FAST FORWARD A FEW YEARS I'VE SINCE DISCOVERED THIS WAS A QUOTE FROM BRUCE LEE.
VERY FAMOUS INDIVIDUAL. BRUCE LEE SAID BE LIKE WATER MAKING ITS WAY THROUGH CRACKS. DO NOT BE ASSERTIVE BUT ADJUST TO THE OBJECT AND FIND A WAY AROUND OR THROUGH IT.
BE WATER. HOW DOES THIS APPLY TO MAY FAIR? THE PARALLELS ARE OBVIOUS AS WE ARE THE MONSOONS.
MONSOONS ARE ASSOCIATED HEAVY RAINFALL WHICH OF COURSE IS WATER AND I WILL CONTINUE TO CHALLENGE EVERYBODY TO EXPLORE THIS COMMENT AND WHAT IT MEANS BEHIND IT WHEN I SAY BE WATER.
I CHALLENGE THAT TO ALL OF OUR STUDENTS, OUR STAFF, AND OUR COMMUNITY. BUT WHY IN FOR ME AGAIN TO GO BACK TO MY GOOD FRIEND JOHN ABBOT, IT JUST FINDS A WAY.
WATER ADJUSTS AND TAKES MANY FORMS. IT RECONSTITUTES ITSELF TO THRIVE AND SURVIVE.
WATER IS RESILIENT. IT'S EVER PRESENT.
WATER SUSTAINS US. REFRESHES US.
AND SOMETIMES CHALLENGES US. SO IN MANY WAYS, TEACHING IS WATER. BENJAMIN BRIGHAM EXPANDED ON THIS WHEN HE SAID HIS TEACHING PHILOSOPHY IS WATER.
I VISIT HIS PAGE A COUPLE OF TIMES BUT OUTSTANDING TEACHERS ADAPT THEPSS TO THE CIRCUMSTANCES AND SUSTAIN, REFRESH, AND CHALLENGE THEIR LEARNERS.
THESE TEACHERS IDENTIFY THEIR AIMS AND THE PATH OF LEAST RESI RESISTANCE.
THE PATH 245 MARYS FROM MOMENT TO MOMENT AND DAY-TO-DAY.
BECAUSE IT'S BASED ON WHAT THE NEEDS OF THE LEARNERS ARE, OUR STUDENTS. WHEN REQUIRED GREAT TEACHERS OFFER REFRESHMENT IN THE FORM OF SUPPORT SOMETIMES.
SOMETIMES JOKES OR KIND WORDS. TO SUSTAIN THEIR LEARNERS AND KEEP DOORS OPEN FOR THEIR LEARNING.
WHEN NECESSARY GREAT TEACHERS CRASH LIKE A TIDAL WAVE WASHING AWAY INAPPROPRIATE AND HURTFUL BEHAVIORS CLEANING THE WAY FOR NEW GROWTH AND LEARNING. WATER SIMPLY SHIFTS ITS SHAPE AND CONTINUES ON ITS PATH ACHIEVING ITS AIMS REGARDLESS OF
[00:05:02]
OUR RESPONSE. IF REQUIRED GREAT TEACHERS RECOGNIZE AND WORK THEIR WAY THROUGH CRACKS SO THAT LEARNERS CAN GET THROUGH THAT RESISTANCE IN LEARNING.THEY BUILD RELATIONSHIPS AND CREATE ENTHUSIASM FOR -- TEACH EVERIES LIKE WATER FIND JOY IN SUSTAINING OTHERS AND HELPING THEM GROW. SO AS I CHALLENGE OUR COMMUNITY AND EVERYBODY IN IT, BE WATER, MY FRIENDS.
ALL LIVING THINGS WILL SEEK YOU OUT FOR INSPIRATION.
IT'S AN HONOR TO BE HERE. GO SOONS.
[APPLAUSE]. >> WOW, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THAT I KNOW SEPARATIONAL MESSAGE.
[6. FLAG SALUTE]
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THAT. WOW.OKAY. SO NOW THE PROGRAM ADMINISTRATOR OF ADULT REENTRY TRANSITION CENTER CWA AND SMAA WILL BE LEADING THE FLAG SALUTE THIS EVENING. WELCOME AND THANK YOU.
>> IF YOU'RE ABLE, PLEASE STAND. >> PUT YOUR RIGHT HAND OVER YOUR HEART AND LET'S BEGIN.
[7. ORAL REPORTS AND PRESENTATIONS]
TESTS 250I78 FOR THE BOARD OF EDUCATION MEMBER COMMUNICATIONS AND REPORTS. LET'S BEGIN WITH MR. DOWNY.>> THANK YOU, PRESIDENT ARMSTRONG.
I ATTENDED THE -- JUST A COUPLE OF DAYS AGO.
WE HONORED CERYL STUDENTS WHO ATTENDED THE AWARDS COMPETITION.
THESE ARE THE KIDS WHO ARE STUDYING TO BE NURSES AND VOCATIONAL TRAINING AND IT WAS SO HEART WARMING TO SEE ALL OF THESE KIDS WORKING TOGETHER AS A TEAM.
THE OTHER THING I INTENDED THIS PAST MONTH WAS THE EXTRAVAGANZA AT LOSS ALAMEDOS HIGH SCHOOL. LAST WEEK I WAS INTERVIEWED BY KNBC NEWS. I WAS THERE FOR ABOUT THREE MINUTES. IT WAS REGARDING THE BOOSTER SHOT FOR PEOPLE IN NEED. I SUPPORT THAT IF IT'S GOING TO BE MADE AVAILABLE. THAT'S ALL I HAVE.
THANK YOU. >> THANK YOU, BOARD MEMBER DOWNEY. LET'S HEAR NOW FROM BOARD MEMBER
THE MONTH OF MARCH WAS VERY BUSY FOR MYSELF.
I SAW ALL OF OUR ATHLETES WALK UP AND HAVE RECOGNITION FOR ALL OF THEIR HARD WORK AND EFFORT THAT THEY PLACED ALL YEAR LONG.
I ALSO WANT TO CONGRATULATE AND THANK THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD CITY COUNCIL LEADERS AND THEIR STAFF FOR HIGHLIGHTING THE AMAZING THINGS THAT ARE GOING ON IN THEIR CITY DURING THEIR CITY -- I'M SORRY, THE CITY OF LAKEWOOD. THANK YOU.
SO MANY THINGS I HAVE TO REMEMBER.
IT'S COLLECTIVE OBVIOUSLY AND THAT MESSAGE RESONATED WITH ME THAT EVENING, WE ALL HAVE A PART TO PLAY IN MAKING SURE THAT OUR COMMUNITIES KEEP THRIVING WITH EVERYTHING THAT IS ALWAYS CHANGING. SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR THE INVITE AND I REALLY ENJOYED THAT EVENING.
I ALSO -- I WANTED TO ATTEND THE MAYFAIR HIGH SCHOOL CORE RUSS
[00:10:06]
SNEAK PEAK PREVIEW BUT UNFORTUNATELY I WAS NOT ABLE TO ATTEND. I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO GOING NEXT YEAR BUT I WAS ABLE TO ATTEND THE MIDDLE SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL SPRING CHORE RAIL CONCERTS.-- CHORAL CONCERTS. WE HAVE SUCH AMAZING AND TALENTED STUDENTS. I WOULD ABSOLUTELY JUST LET THEM ALL GO ON THE VOICE. TO ME THEY HAVE SO MUCH COURAGE TO PUT YOURSELF OUT THERE AND GIVE ALL YOUR EFFORT AND SEE -- PUT THAT UP SO THAT WAY IT'S THERE FOR EVERYBODY TO ENJOY JUST LIKE I DID THAT NIGHT. I ALSO GOT TO ATTEND THE MAYFAIR SPORTS TOURNAMENT WITH THEIR PROGRAM COORDINATOR AND I WANT TO THANK MS. LISA FOR FINDING THAT GYM FOR US.
YOU GUYS NEED TO GO OUT THERE AND SEE WHAT THEY'RE DOING.
THEY'RE AMAZING. I KNOW I KEEP SAYING AMAZING BUT IT'S TRUE AND THERE'S SO MANY OTHER WORDS THAT I CAN COME UP WITH BUT THAT JUST KEEPS COMING FORWARD.
BUT THEY WERE CODING, CREATING GRAPHICS, THEY WERE GIVING COMMENTTARY, ANALYZING BRACKETS. THEY WERE HAVING COMMENTARY.
THEY EVEN DID SOMETHING THAT APPARENTLY WAS NOT -- HAS NOT BEEN DONE BEFORE. THEY USE AN,AVATAR TO GIVE A SNAPSHOT OF THE TWO CONTESTANTS SIDE BY SIDE AS THEY WERE GAMING. AND TO US IT LOOKS LIKE YOU'RE JUST PLAYING VIDEO GAMES, THE AMOUNT OF EFFORT AND FORE THOUGHT AND SKILLS THAT YOU HAVE TO HAVE TO PUT THIS ON AND IT WAS ALL A -- AVATAR -- HE WOULD GIVE THEM HIS ATTENTION.
BUT IT WAS NOT AT ALL LED BY AN ADULT.
THIS WAS ALL STUDENT LED. SO ALL THOSE TYPES OF SKILLS PLUS ALL OF THE WORK THAT GOES ON BEHIND THE SCENES AS HE ACTUALLY EDUCATES THEM ABOUT WANS.
I WAS EDUCATED THEN AND THERE. THANK YOU.
I NOW KNOW WHAT THAT IS. AND THEN ALSO HAVING THAT CONVERSATION WITH THE STUDENTS AND MAKING SURE THAT THEY ARE KEEPING ON TOP OF THE STUDIES AND IF YOUR TEACHER TOOK YOUR CHROMEBOOK LET'S MAKE SURE WE'RE PAYING ATTENTION AND FOCUSING ON THE LESSON SO THAT YOU CAN MAKE SURE YOU CAN DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO FOR FUN. SO THAT ALL CAME OUT THERE AS WELL. THEN I ALSO WAS ABLE TO ATTEND -- I AM CURRENTLY ATTENDING ALONG WITH SOME OTHER OF MY COLLEAGUES AND ADMINISTRATORS HERE AT THE DISTRICT, THE MASTERS IN GOVERNANCE TRAINING AND DURING ONE OF THOSE SESSIONS, WE ACTUALLY -- I ACTUALLY HEARD ABOUT THE GOVERNANCE CALENDAR AND I'M HAPPY TO REPORT THAT WE ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON THAT AND HOPEFULLY, WE WILL GET THAT OUT AS SOON AS WE GET ALL THE DIFFERENT PARTS OF IT TOGETHER.
WHICH WILL GIVE US A BETTER OVERVIEW OF A WHOLE YEAR
[00:15:29]
POLITIZATION OF AMERICAN SCHOOL BOARDS AND HOW A LOT OF TIMES, LOCAL POLITICS ARE NOW NATIONAL POLITICS ARE NOW BECOMING A LOT OF WHAT LOCAL POLITICS ARE. SO IT WAS VERY INTERESTING TO HEAR FROM OTHER DISTRICTS. I DON'T THINK SHE LIKED THAT ONE. I DIDN'T EITHER.BUT SO IT WAS VERY INTERESTING TO SEE THAT SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN OTHER AREAS OF OUR NATION ARE EXPERIENCING A LOT OF WHAT WE'RE EXPERIENCING HERE. SO HAVING THOSE CONVERSATIONS AND JUST SEEING THAT WE'RE NOT THE ONLY ONES KIND OF HELPS A LITTLE BIT AND HELPS MOVING US FORWARD.
ALSO, BUILDING TRUST WHEN INFORMATION IS CHANGING.
ONE OF MY BIG TAKEAWAYS FROM THERE WAS THAT WE NEED TO GET IN FRONT OF THAT INFORMATION THAT IS COMING DOWN AND MAKING SURE THAT WE ARE ABLE TO GIVE A MESSAGE THAT IS TRANSPARENT, THAT IS ALSO INFORM TIFF BUT THAT IS ALSO -- THAT WE ARE ABLE TO GIVE THEM A PREDICTABLE TIME SO THAT FAMILIES ARE ABLE TO SEE WHEN THAT MESSAGE COMES OUT AND THAT THEIR QUESTIONS ARE ANSWERED. AND HAVING SOMEONE WHO IS NAMED KIND OF LIKE A PUBLIC VOICE FOR THE DISTRICT MAY BE A GOOD IDEA AND MAY BE SOMETHING THAT WE CAN LATER ON FOLLOW UP ON.
AND SO FINALLY, AS WE APPROACH SPRING BREAK, I REALLY URGE YOU TO PLEASE MAKE TIME TO DISCONNECT FROM WORK, TEACHERS, STAFF. SUPPORT ON OUR CAMPUSES TOO.
AND ENGAGE IN SOME SELF-CARE WITH YOUR FAMILIES.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH. HAVE A NICE DAY.
>> THANK YOU SO MUCH. I TELL YOU, IT'S SO MUCH INFORMATION. OKAY. SO SO MUCH GOOD INFORMATION AND IT'S GREAT TO BE ABLE TO SHARE THIS.
I MEAN, WE ARE EXCITED. MAY WE PLEASE HEAR FROM BOARD
THIS WEEK WAS -- I MEAN, THIS MONTH -- WEEK.
WE'RE ALREADY INTO APRIL. I WAS ABLE TO ALONG WITH MY COLLEAGUE HERE, BOARD MEMBER DOWNEY, WE WERE AT THE BOARD MEETING LAST NIGHT AND IT WAS SO REWARDING SEEING STUDENTS GO THROUGH THE PROCESS AND I WANTED TO SHARE, ONE QUESTION I ASKED THE STUDENTS WAS WHAT DID YOU FIND MOST INTERESTING ABOUT THE SKILLS TRAINING THAT YOU DID AND THIS IS THROUGHOUT -- IT WAS IN LONG BEACH BUT EVERYONE FROM THE STATE WHO ARE PARTICIPATING IN THE PROGRAM WERE THERE. AND THE ONE THING -- THE ONE STUDENT ANSWERED WAS CONNECTING WITH OTHER PEOPLE AND MEETING OTHERS AND SEEING WHAT THEY'RE DOING TO REALLY ENJOY THE TEAM WORK THAT WAS INVOLVED. AND IT KIND OF MADE ME THINK AS A RESULT OF COVID THAT WAS THE THING THAT STOOD OUT TO HER, THE CONNECTION, AND HOW IMPORTANT THAT CONNECTION IS TO OUR STUDENTS. ALSO, MANY STUDENTS -- THAT WAS THE FIRST TIME STAYING IN A HOTEL.
THAT WAS THE FIRST TIME THEY WERE EXPOSED TO EATING OUT FOR MANY OF THEM. I THINK IT WAS IMPORTANT TO SEE THAT THIS IS NOT ONLY BUILDING SKILLS BUT IT'S ALSO BUILDING EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE WHICH IS SO VITAL RIGHT NOW FOR OUR STUDENTS AND NEEDED ANYWHERE YOU WORK.
I ALSO ATTENDED THE STATE OF THE CITY ADDRESS IN LAKEWOOD.
CONNECTED WITH MANY STAKEHOLDERS OF OUR COMMUNITY AND IT WAS VERY INFORMATIVE AND ALSO ENLIGHTENING IN REGARDS TO SOME
[00:20:02]
OF THE ISSUES THAT ARE GOING ON IN THE CITY NOT TOO FAVORABLE.CRIME HAS GONE UP A LOT IN DIFFERENT AREAS BUT THEY WERE ADDRESSING IT BUT THAT WAS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WAS MENTIONED AT THAT TIME. IN ADDITION TO ALL THE PROGRAMS THAT ARE NOW STARTING UP TO SUPPORT COMMUNITY BUILDINGS AND STUDENTS AND PARKS AND RECREATION.
SPENDING TIME OUTSIDE IN NATURE IMPROVES YOUR ABILITY TO REACH AN INNER TRANQUILLITY. THANK YOU.
>> YOU GUYS KNOW I'M ALSO A TEACHER AND VERY ACTIVE BOTH WITH THE TEACHERS AND SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS AND SO WHAT I DID, I ATTENDED A LEADERSHIP SUMMIT. IT'S AN ANNUAL LEADERSHIP -- IT WAS MY FIRST TIME DOING THIS TOO SO IT'S AN ANNUAL LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT TRAINING PUT ON BY THE NATIONAL EDUCATION MEMBERS AND THE PURPOSE OF THE SUMMIT IS TO PROVIDE TRAINING THAT COULD DEVELOP ACTIVIST LEADERS AND PREPARE US WITH THE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES NECESSARY TO LEAD RELEVANT AND THRIVING ASSOCIATIONS. AND SO I'M REALLY -- I'M -- I STARTED AND I'M GOING TO CONTINUE THIS IN A MORE FOCUSED WAY AND THIS UNIT -- THE UNIFIED STRATEGIC AND INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH TO THIS LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT REINFORCES AND SUPPORTS KEY LEADERSHIP COMPETENCIES AND DOE INANE MAINS. OF COURSE, I ALSO ATTENDED THE LAKEWOOD YOUTH AWARDS, THE HALL OF FAME AWARDS AND I TELL YOU, WE MISSED IT FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS BUT -- BUT SO WHAT.
WE MADE UP FOR IT. WE HAVE SUCH A GREAT TIME RECOGNIZING MANY STUDENT ATHLETES AND THEY ARE OUTSTANDING. SOME OF THE THINGS THAT THEY ACCOMPLISHED BEING THAT WE WERE VIRTUAL.
AND WE HONOR STUDENTS FROM LAKEWOOD HIGH SCHOOL, MAYFAIR HIGH SCHOOL, ST. JOSEPHS HIGH SCHOOL.
I WENT TO ANOTHER WORKSHOP THAT WAS PUT ON AND WHAT SHE A A --
[00:25:58]
ABC -- ONE COMPONENT OF THESE TRAININGS IS THAT WE GET A CHANCE TO LISTEN TO KEYNOTE SPEAKERS.THERE ARE SEVERAL BUT I'M GOING TO JUST TALK ABOUT THIS ONE KEYNOTE SPEAKER --
[00:30:28]
A EVER -- PA-- >> BOYS WRESTLING TEAM NAMED INDIVIDUAL SUBURBAN LEAGUE CHAMPION IN HIS INDIVIDUAL WEIGHT CLASS. DANIEL, ARE YOU HERE THIS EVENING? IS MAY FAIR'S LESS WRESTLING COACH HERE? WONDERFUL.
WE WOULD LIKE TO RECOGNIZE FOUR STUDENTS NAMED INDIVIDUAL SUBURBAN LEAGUE CHAMPIONS IN THEIR INDIVIDUAL WEIGHT CLASS.
WHEN I CALL YOUR NAME -- >> IS THERE FLYNN IN THE
[00:36:41]
AUDIENCE THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE?AA >> ON BEHALF 06 THE BOARD CONGRATULATIONS TO EACH OF YOU AND YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS THIS YEAR. THANK YOU COACH ATALLAFOR YOUR HARD WORK AND DEDICATION TO OUR STUDENTS.
[00:41:50]
>> CONGRATULATIONS AGAIN TO ALL OF OUR RECIPIENTS.
THAT WAS GREAT. OKAY. WE DO NOT HAVE A PUBLIC HEARING THIS EVENING. IS THAT CORRECT?
>> POINT OF ORDER. WE DO NOT HAVE A PUBLIC HEARING BUT IF YOU COULD GO BACK TO COMMUN
I JUST GOT EXCITED WITH THOSE A WARDS.
WILL YOU PLEASE CONTINUE WITH YOUR COMMUNICATIONS?
>> YES. THIS EVENING I WOULD LIKE TO CALL THE BOARD'S ATTENTION TO THIS MONTH'S BULLETIN BOARD.
[00:59:08]
QUESTIONS?[00:59:19]
>> I DO HAVE A COMMENT. SO WHEN OUR STUDENTS TAKE THE
[00:59:27]
CPR CLASS, ARE THEY RECEIVING THE TWO YEAR CERTIFICATION?>> IF THEY TAKE THE HEALTH OCCUPATIONS COURSE THEY GET BLS CERTIFICATION. IS THAT RIGHT?
>> OKAY. I WANTED TO JUST PUT THAT OUT THERE.
MY DAUGHTER IS IN -- MY OTHER DAUGHTER IS IN THE PROGRAM AND THEY WERE DOING THE CPR TRAINING YESTERDAY AND I ASKED THE TEACHER ARE THEY GOING TO GET CERTIFIED AND SHE'S LIKE YEAH.
AND I'M LIKE I NEED TO RENEW MINE.
YOU KNOW. SO IT'S REALLY EXCITING.
[01:00:03]
AND I WANTED TO MENTION SO THEY HAVE TO BE EXCITED ABOUTDISECTING THE PIG'S HEART. >> WHAT IS THAT?
>> THEY THIS HAD A SUCCESSFUL TRANSPLANT INTO A HUMAN.
>> I DIDN'T KNOW YOU WERE LEADING TO THAT.
>> YOU HAVE TO TELL THEM THAT. AND JUST RECENTLY, YOU KNOW WHAT HAPPENED. BUT IT'S GOING TO BE SO
>> OKAY. I'M SORRY. I GET EXCITED.
SO ARE YOU GOING TO BE INTRODUCING THE OTHER FIELDS
SUCH AS OT OR PT? >> IN INTRODUCTION TO LELTH CAREERS THEY GET IN THERAPEUTIC SERVICES EXPOSURE TO OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY AND PHYSICAL THERAPY AND TO LEARN THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO AND GET SOME BASIC SKILLS ABOUT MEASURING RANGES OF MOTION AND SOME MENTAL OR NEUROLOGICAL
TESTS AS WELL. >> IT'S NOTHING IN DEPTH THAT PARTICULAR CLASS. IT'S JUST TO EXPOSE THEM TO MORE MEDICAL FIELDS OTHER THAN BEING A NURSE OR DOCTOR.
THOSE ARE DEMAND RIGHT NOW. THAT'S WHY I WAS ASKING.
>> YEAH. >> THE LABOR MARKET AND SHORTAGE OF THOSE TWO. THANK YOU.
>> DON'T LEAVE OUT SPEECH AND LANGUAGE.
>> WE HAVE A SPEECH THERAPY MODULE AS WELL TO EXPOSE THEM TO CAREERS IN SPEECH PATHOLOGY AND THEY DO LOTS OF -- TEST EACH OTHER WITH CERTAIN GAMES.
>> I WANT TO THANK A SECOND AGAIN TO THANK KAISER-PERMANENTE AGAIN TO MAKE THIS POSSIBLE. THANK YOU, BOARD.
>> THANK YOU. >> ANYMORE COMMUNICATIONS?
>> NO. THAT CONCLUDES THEM FOR THIS
OKAY. JUST TO BE SURE WE DO NOT HAVE PUBLIC HEARING THIS EVENING. OKAY. TONIGHT WE HAVE NO REQUESTS ADDRESSING AGENDA ITEMS.
[8. ACTION]
OKAY.DO WE HAVE ANY CORRECTIONS THIS EVENING?
>> WE DO NOT. >> NO CORRECTIONS.
>> ALL RIGHT. SO THE NEXT ITEM OF BUSINESS IS APPROVAL OF MINUTES. DO I HAVE A MOTION TO APPROVE
EYE IS ATTEMPT 8.21. >> SO MOVED.
OKAY. DO WE HAVE QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? HAD
. >> I MAKE A MOTION TO APPROVE THE CON SYNTH AGENDA AND WITHHOLD ITEMS 8.3.1.2, 8.3.2.6, AND 8.3.2.7. DO I HAVE A SECOND TO APPROVE THE CONSENT AGENDA?
DO WE HAVE QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? THE NEXT ITEM OF BUSINESS IS ITEMS WEATHER HELD.
THE FIRST ITEM IS AGENDA 8.3.1.2, BOARD OF EDUCATION VACANCY. DO I HAVE A MOTION?
>> THANK YOU. >> DO I HAVE A SECOND?
>> SECOND. >> WE HAVE A BRIEF PRESENTATION.
>> THANK YOU. THIS EVENING I JUST WANTED TO REVIEW THE OPTIONS THAT THE BOARD HAS FOR YOU AND SHARE WHAT THAT WOULD LOOK LIKE. SO YOU HAVE TWO OPTIONS.
[01:05:03]
THREE. ONE IS THAT YOU CAN REQUEST AN ELECTION. THAT ELECTION WOULD COST APPROXIMATELY $1.3 MILLION TO THE DISTRICT IN ORDER TO RUN A CAMPAIGN FOR ONE CANDIDATE. YOU CAN MAKE A PROVISIONAL APPOINTMENT WHICHLY SPEAK ABOUT LATER OR YOU CAN ACTUALLY DECIDE TO TAKE NO ACTION. THAT ALSO HAS SOME REPERCUSSIONS. IF YOU TAKE NO ACTION AS A BOARD THEN THE COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT WILL ORDER A SPECIAL ELECTION AT THE COST OF THE DISTRICT OF $1.3 MILLION APPROXIMATELY.SO KIND OF WENT THROUGH THOSE QUICKLY BUT THE OPTION B IS THE PROVISIONAL APPOINTMENT IF YOU CHOOSE TO GO THAT WAY AND FOREGO THE COST, IT WOULD BE AN APPOINTMENT FOR SOMEBODY TO FILL THE SPACE UNTIL NOVEMBER. IF THEY CHOSE TO CONTINUE THAT POSITION THEY WOULD NEED TO PUT THEIR NAME ON THE BALLOT AND GO THROUGH THE ELECTION PROCESS IN NOVEMBER.
IF YOU CHOOSE THAT OPTION WE WILL BE POSTING THE APPLICATION PROCESS FOR CANDIDATES AND WE WOULD BE COLLECTING APPLICATIONS FOR THREE WEEKS FROM THE 11TH THROUGH 29TH OF APRIL AND THEN MY RECOMMENDATION WOULD BE THAT THE BOARD AT THEIR NEXT SPECIAL MEETING WHEN WE ARE ALSO GOING TO BE DISCUSSING BUDGET AND FACILITIES TO CONDUCT INTERVIEWS THAT EVENING ON MAY 4TH.
THEN YOU WOULD SELECT A CANDIDATE AT THAT SPECIAL MEETING. AT THAT POINT, WE WOULD SWEAR THEM IN AT THE NEXT REGULAR MEETING WHICH WOULD BE THE FOLLOWING WEEK AND THEN WE WOULD BE REQUIRED TO POST AND PUBLISH NOTICE OF THE SEVEN MONTH APPOINTMENT BY MAY 16TH.
>> I PROPOSE WE DEPARTMENT OPTION B FOR SELECTING THE
VACANCY ON OUR BOARD. >> I DO HAVE A QUESTION.
SO WE DO THE APPOINTMENT PROVISIONAL APPOINTMENT AND --
>> MS. ARMSTRONG, RIGHT NOW, MR. DOWNEY MADE A MOTION AND THEN WE
HAVE COMMENTS AND QUESTIONS. >> I SECOND IT.
>> SO WE'LL GO THROUGH THIS PROCESS AND IN THE EVENT THAT WE ARE NOT ABLE TO APPOINT THEN WE WOULD GO RIGHT INTO THE OPTION A OR C.
[01:10:05]
>> THERE IS NO TIE BREAK. IT HAS TO BE A 3-1 VOTE.
IF YOU RECALL, WE HAVE 60 DAYS TO MAKE THE REPLACEMENT FROM THE DATE OF THE VACANCY WHICH WAS APRIL 1ST.
THE PURPOSE FOR THAT IS IF THERE WAS A REASON THAT YOU GUYS KNEED MORE TIME OR YOU COULD NOT AGREE ON A CANDIDATE AND NEEDED TO COME BACK WITH ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS THEN WE WOULD BRING THEM BACK FOR ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS AND CONTINUE THAT PROCESS AT A SUBSEQUENT MEETING. PART OF THE RANKING IS THE
SO WE CAN ADD THAT PORTION IN THERE IS WHAT I'M SAYING.
AS WE ASK THESE QUESTIONS, WE CAN MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE GIVING THEM A SCORE, YOU KNOW, LIKE, FOR EXAMPLE, ONE OR TWO AND THEN AS THEY'RE TABULATED IT WILL GIVE US A RANKING.
>> SO THERE'S NOBODY SHARING QUESTIONS OUT SO AS LONG AS YOU'RE FINE WITH THAT BASIC PRACTICE THAT WE'VE DONE IN THE PAST THAT TELLS ME HOW TO MOVE FORWARD WITH YOUR CHOICE OF
OPTION B. >> LET'S CALL FOR A VOTE.
I HAVE A QUICK CLARIFICATION. SO ARE WE MOVING -- WHAT IS THE MOTION THAT WE HAVE ON THE FLOOR RIGHT NOW THEN?
>> WE'RE SELECTING OPTION B. >> OKAY. AND SO WILL WE BE
USING A RUBRIC. >> WE DON'T KNOW YET.
>> WE CAN DECIDE THAT LATER? >> YES.
ANYMORE QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS? THANK YOU FOR THAT CLARIFICATION BOARD MEMBER GARZ A. GREAT.
[01:15:03]
OKAY. THE NEXT AGENDA ITEM TONIGHT IS -->> I ASKED FOR THIS ITEM TO BE WITHHELD AND WOULD LIKE TO MAKE A COMMENT AND TEACHERS DO IT ALL DAY.
DEPENDING ON THE SUBJECT AND GRADE LEVEL IN WHICH THEY TEACH FROM PRESCHOOL TO HIGH SCHOOL. AND SPECIAL EDUCATION TO STATISTICS. ONE THEME RUNS CONSISTENTLY THROUGHOUT EVERY GREAT TEACHER'S CAREER.
THEIR JOB DOES NOT END WITH INSTRUCTION.
AND ALL THOSE STANDINGS IN FRONT OF THE CLASSROOM IS A HUGE PART OF A TEACHER'S RESPONSIBILITY. THEY PROVIDE SO MUCH MORE.
>> MOVE TO APPROVE? >> WELL, LET'S DO ROLL CALL OKAY. THE NEXT AGENDA ITEM IS 8.3.2.7.
RESOLUTION CLASSIFIED SCHOOLS EMPLOYEE WEEK WHICH IS MAY 16TH THROUGH MAY 20TH. YEAH.
[9. NON-ACTION]
>> ARE THERE QUESTIONS OR COMMENTEDS REROUTEDING INFORMATIONAL ITEMS?
[01:20:03]
>> TONIGHT WE HAVE NO CARDS ADDRESSING ANY AGENDA ITEMS. SO IF THE BOARD -- WE'RE NOT -- ARE WE GOING BACK INTO CLOSED
AT THIS TIME, THE BOARD WILL RECESS AND THERE WILL BE NO
FURTHER ACTION TAKEN. >> YOU'RE ADJOURNING THE MEET LING AS A POINT OF ORDER.
